Perceptions and educational needs of social and healthcare professionals in the prevention of domestic violence – A focus group study

ObjectiveTo explore and describe social and healthcare professionals’ perceptions and educational needs in relation to domestic violence and its prevention. MethodsA qualitative research was conducted in three European countries. Two multidisciplinary focus group interviews were conducted (in each country) among professionals and higher education teachers in the field of social and health care. Total number of participants were 32 (Finland n=12, Greece n=12, Portugal n=8). The transcribed data were analyzed by thematic analysis. ResultsParticipants’ perceptions of domestic violence and its prevention included: multidimensional phenomenon, consequences, and addressing concern. Domestic violence was seen as a multidimensional phenomenon, which has various consequences for several aspects of life. Professionals have difficulties addressing their concern due to lack of knowledge and tools. Solutions to prevent domestic violence that the participants shared were: education, intervention, and strategies. Education was seen as the key aspect for the prevention of domestic violence. Also, professionals’ communication and situation management skills, as well as national and international strategies, were seen as valuable solutions. Educational needs for prevention of domestic violence were expressed based on content, methods, and practices, such as services system and legislation. ConclusionThe findings of the current study highlight the social- and healthcare professionals’ need for education about domestic violence. It is essential that these professionals receive appropriate training to effectively identify and address domestic violence. The current study provides useful information for the development of relevant training/education for this group of professionals.

Domestic violence perception and gender stereotypes

Using a survey of more than 4500 Italian women, we address the link between gender stereotypes and perceptions of domestic violence. We define a new measure of stereotypes at the individual level and show that women with stronger stereotypes are less likely to state that violence is common in their area of residence and are more likely to classify physical violence as less severe than privacy breaches. This ranking is associated with a victim-blaming mindset among respondents with stronger stereotypes, who are also more likely to attribute violent behaviors to event-specific circumstances (e.g., economic distress) than to personal characteristics of abusers (e.g., psychological issues) and to advise a hypothetical victim not to react to violence.

The main elements of the solution to China’s demotic violence

Domestic violence represents a complex and pervasive issue within China, deeply entrenched in historical norms and sociocultural attitudes. Even with legal reforms aimed at criminalizing domestic violence and establishing legal protections for victims, challenges persist due to the societal perception of domestic violence as a family matter. This paper critically examines the main elements necessary for effectively combating domestic violence in China—policy instruments, policy implementation, and lobbying. By dissecting the shortcomings of current measures, the paper argues for the adoption of multidimensional policy tools beyond policing and legal action, such as public awareness campaigns and persuasive strategies designed to shift societal attitudes. The significance of rigorous policy implementation is emphasized, highlighting the need for iterative enforcement and organizational learning to ensure the efficacy of domestic violence policies. Furthermore, the complex role of lobbying within China's political context is explored, demonstrating its impact on policy proposals and reforms. Overall, the paper posits the need for a comprehensive approach, involving a concerted effort from policymakers, law enforcement, and civil society to address the multifaceted challenges of domestic violence in China.

The Spiritualization of Domestic Violence in the Digital Era: Examining the Cathartic Role of Religious Institutions in Empowering Victims

This study delves into the intricate intersection of domestic violence, spirituality, and the digital age, aiming to understand the evolving dynamics and the role religious institutions play in providing catharsis for victims. As technology increasingly permeates our daily lives, the digital era has brought about new dimensions to the manifestation and perception of domestic violence. This research seeks to shed light on the phenomenon of spiritualization, where religious narratives and beliefs are interwoven with domestic violence experiences, either exacerbating or alleviating the trauma. Through a comprehensive review of scholarly literature, and digital ethnography, this study explores how religious institutions engage with domestic violence victims in the digital realm. It examines the ways in which religious teachings, counselling, and support mechanisms are leveraged to address the unique challenges posed by the intersection of spirituality, technology, and intimate partner violence.
 
 The research also investigates the potential pitfalls of spiritualization, considering instances where religious doctrines may inadvertently contribute to the perpetuation of abuse or hinder victims from seeking help. By analyzing online forums, social media platforms, and religious websites, the study aims to elucidate the ways in which digital spaces either facilitate or impede the spiritualization process for domestic violence victims. Furthermore, the role of religious leaders and communities in raising awareness, providing resources, and fostering a supportive environment for victims is explored. The study aims to identify best practices employed by religious institutions in addressing domestic violence in the digital age, offering insights for policymakers, advocates, and religious leaders to collaboratively develop more effective strategies for supporting victims and preventing further harm. Ultimately, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on domestic violence, spirituality, and technology, offering a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved. The findings hold implications for both academic scholarship and practical interventions, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional approach to empower victims and create a more compassionate and informed societal response to domestic violence in the digital era.

Shifting the Balance: Examining the Impact of Local Labor Market Opportunities on Female Household Bargaining Power in India

There has been considerable interest in studying the effect of female labor market outcomes on intrahousehold bargaining. This paper examines the effects of local labor market opportunities in India on a variety of female bargaining characteristics, including domestic violence and intrahousehold discussion of important issues. Specifically, I utilize district-level data on employment in various occupations to calculate an employment shift-share index that proxies gender-specific labor demand. I find that improvements in labor market conditions for women lead to a decrease in perceptions of domestic violence, whereas improvements in predicted demand for male employment have little or negative effects on women’s household bargaining power. When disaggregated by indicators of initial bargaining power, women that have lower levels of initial bargaining power either see no effect on bargaining or experience a backlash effect.

The problem of criminal responsibility for domestic violence in Ukraine

The problem of domestic violence has always been relevant and widespread for Ukrainian society. Numerous cases of domestic violence prompted the legislator to criminalize this act, as evidenced by the amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine dated December 6, 2017, and to make legislative changes to a number of regulations on protection against manifestations of domestic violence. The world community rapidly protects human rights, its honor and dignity, gender equality and respect for human freedoms, forming a number of inviolable values in society. The life of Ukrainian citizens changed radically with the beginning of a full-scale war in our country. The article analyzes official statistics, which show that domestic violence in Ukraine during the martial law has not lost its relevance, there is no doubt about the prevalence of this problem in society. We assume that the armed conflict can exacerbate the problem of violence, since aggression, a change in the usual rhythm of life, the need to adapt to new circumstances, a constant threat can be factors that influence the perpetration of domestic violence. This indicates an urgent need to develop effective mechanisms for combating these criminal offenses. We need to change the mental perception of domestic violence in our society. Unfortunately, domestic violence is a criminal offense characterized by high latency. Victims of the specified criminal offenses are often ashamed to report the fact that violence has been committed against them or other persons. Changing the perception of domestic violence by victims and society as a whole is extremely important for overcoming this type of crime. There is no shame in reporting domestic violence, it is not a secret that is intimate in the life of a family or an individual. Failure to report domestic violence is a cover for violent criminals.

Perceptions of Malaysian Indian Women on Domestic Violence in Malaysia: A Peek into the Indian Households

This study investigates how Malaysian Indian women perceived and internalised domestic violence in Malaysia. Domestic violence is linked to gender issues that have disproportionately affected women compared to men in society. In traditional societies, women were frequently socialised to be subordinate to men in terms of roles, responsibilities and positions. These setbacks have contributed to the domestic violence issue among women. Domestic violence is a prime example of exploitation and discrimination against women in various aspects of their lives. Women have typically been passive and resisting domestic violence experiences to protect their household, male partners, children and society. The data for this study were gathered through in-depth interviews with 24 Malaysian Indian women, who were recruited through the purposive sampling technique. The qualitative data was analysed with Nvivo11 software. Three themes were identified that reflect participants’ perceptions of domestic violence in Malaysia. First, participants saw domestic violence as a normalising aspect of marital life. Second, participants saw domestic violence as a serious problem that affects women and their rights. Third, participants saw domestic violence as a sign of male identity to protect women. This study offers gender perspectives, such as the impact of masculinities, the patriarchal system and unequal power relationships in the household. It also explains the complexities of women’s socialisation in traditional households, as well as enlightening various stakeholders in Malaysia on the perceptions of Malaysian Indian women on domestic violence.

Perceptions, Help-Seeking, and High-Risk Domestic Violence in Black Communities.

One in four women report experiencing intimate partner violence. Yet, nearly 45% of Black women report experiencing this same crime. In addition, while Black women compose 14% of the U.S. population, they represent 31% of domestic violence fatalities and are three times more likely than White women to be killed by an intimate partner. This points to the continued need to better understand how the Black community perceives domestic violence and how their perception influences their help-seeking strategies. This paper reports on a project examining how Black communities perceive domestic violence, high-risk domestic violence, and how these perceptions impact their help-seeking strategies. The study was conducted between April 2020 and October 2020 with 128 participants that participated in focus groups in six geographically diverse U.S. cities including rural, urban, and suburban communities. The findings reaffirmed and presented new information about the perceptions of domestic violence, the impact of inadequate and negative systems' responses, the lack of cultural responsiveness and poor police interactions, and the calculated decision-making that survivors in the Black community use to determine who to tell, how to tell, and where to go in use of adapted help-seeking strategies. Implications are provided as to how to address these issues.

Domestic Violence on the Italian Screen: Representation and Resistance.

This article looks at how contemporary Italian films address issues of the tragedy and horror of domestic abuse and attempt to create a space for reflection and change. Ferzan Ozpetek's (2008) Un giorno perfetto (A Perfect Day), Andrès Arce Maldonado's (2017) Dentro (Inside), and Ivano De Matteo's (2016) La vita possibile (A Possible Life) ultimately challenge the perception of domestic violence as a fixed and unchangeable condition for women. The films explore how female solidarity, empathy, and care can serve as pathways to combatting the isolation, guilt, and associated emotions that prevent women from seeking or finding la vita possibile.

A Study on the Impact of Media on Gender Neutrality and Domestic Violence and the Legal Awareness

This paper is an attempt to understand the status and perception of domestic violence with regards to the steep increase in the number of complaints received by the National Commission for Women (NCW) from 2019 which was the head start of lockdown. Latest report shows a drastic increase in the number of domestic violence in general especially during complete lockdown. This paper attempts to uncover the perception of people on the idea of what is domestic violence and gender equality and the legal awareness on the same. In India, with its diverse population, the lack of awareness, social pressure, indifference in ideas, and insufficient knowledge about gender equality–attitude–related to help-seeking lead to underreporting and negligence of domestic violence, which can propagate the cycle during the on-going crisis. This paper also substantiates the role of media exposure on awareness in the attitude of people towards identifying gender based domestic violence, and the literacy on legal consciousness through qualitative and quantitative methods such as a wide array survey and structured interviews.

This study aims to determine the public's perception of the phenomenon of domestic violence cases, determine the factors that cause domestic violence, the forms of violence experienced by victims, the psychological impact of women as victims of violence, and recovery efforts for victims of violence. The researcher took the location in Kalangan Village, Banturetno Village, Banguntapan District, Bantul Regency. The subject of this research is the community. The type of research used in this research is qualitative research. The design used in this study is descriptive which aims to describe the tendency of people's perceptions of domestic violence. The sampling technique in this study was purposive proportional random sampling. Data collection methods used by researchers are interviews, questionnaires (questionnaire) and documentation. The results of the study show that the people of Kalangan Baturetno Banguntapan Bantul Village still think that the phenomenon of domestic violence is a shame that must be hidden, because they feel ashamed of not being able to keep their families in harmony. The main causal factors in the phenomenon of domestic violence cases in Kalangan Village are the main problems of infidelity, differences of opinion and economic problems. The forms of violence experienced by victims of domestic violence are physical violence (slapped, grabbed, etc.), psychological violence (swearing, threats), sexual violence. Usually victims who experience domestic violence will experience trauma, victims feel anxious, scared, depressed, often daydream, moody, cry easily, have trouble sleeping, and have nightmares.

Association Between Domestic Violence and Sexual Dysfunction in Women on Infertility Treatment in Turkey

Infertility is a global problem that closely concerns people of reproductive age. Infertility has many negative effects on the lives of individuals, especially women who are more exposed to violence. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the perceptions of domestic violence against women and the sexual functions of women who apply to a clinic for fertility treatment. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 infertile women who applied to the clinic of a university hospital in northern Turkey between August 2018 and February 2019. The data were collected face-to-face using the descriptive information form, the Female Sexual Function Index and domestic-violence-against-women forms. The frequency, percentage, Pearson’s product–moment correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, the Mann Whitney U test, and Cronbach’s alpha methods were used in the analysis of the data. It was found that 54 per cent of the participants had a high school or higher education, 62 per cent of the participants did not work in an income-generating job, the participants were married for an average of 6.08 ± 3.99 years, and the mean age of the participants was 30.69 ± 6.13. The mean score of the domestic violence scale was 65.79 ± 11.16, and the mean score of the sexual function index was determined as 25.24 ± 5.47. Correlation values between domestic violence and sexual function index scores were found to be inversely significant (p < 0.05). The research indicates that infertile women who are exposed to violence experience more sexual dysfunction. It also indicates that women who are not satisfied with their sex life are more exposed to sexual violence.

The Perceptions of Domestic Violence by a Family Member Who Uses Crack or Cocaine: A Secondary Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between crack/cocaine use and domestic violence perpetration from the perspective of substance users’ families. A secondary retrospective cross-sectional study, with 3162 family members of crack/cocaine users seeking treatment in the Recomeço Família Programme in São Paulo/Brazil was undertaken. Family members of crack/cocaine users reported that their relatives were more involved in domestic violence such as stealing (money and objects) at home [Odds Ratio Adjusted ORA = 2.17 (CI 95% 1.87; 2.53)], the family gave money to the user to buy drugs [ORA = 1.27 (1.08; 1.48)], and having problems with the judiciary [ORA = 1.48 (CI 95% 1.28; 1.71)]. Relatives of snorted cocaine users reported that there was physical and interpersonal violence, such as fathers being assaulted [ORA = 2.50 (CI 95% 1.08; 5.82)], assaulted someone else [ORA = 1.86 (CI 95% 1.32; 2.60)], threats of violence fights, arguments when the family talk about problematic drug use [ORA = 1.50 (CI 95% 1.13; 1.96)] and threatened some family members [ORA = 1.52 (CI 95% 1.14; 2.04)]. In this sample, there was a connection between crack/cocaine use and the perpetuation of domestic violence, corroborating with important implications for public policies, substance use treatment and prevention of domestic violence interventions.

Micro-finance and women’s perception of domestic violence in a fragile state

The impact of microfinance on women’s perception of domestic violence has not been rigorously investigated in fragile states of sub-Saharan Africa, but results from elsewhere indicate a missing consensus. An innovative microfinance in Sierra Leone known as Osusu, has unique features that make reduction in acceptance of domestic violence more likely. This paper employs propensity scores matching design on 2948 women from Sierra Leone. The data was obtained from a unique dataset that we constructed by merging information from the same individuals interviewed in two independent and nationally representative studies, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, and the Integrated Household Survey. Our results indicate that participation in a micro-fiance scheme, Osusu, reduces acceptance of domestic violence amongst women. The relationship between Osusu and domestic violence is robust on; reducing acceptance of acts of beating a wife if she does not undertake household responsibilities such as neglecting children and burning food, while acts related to couple accountability such as going out without telling her husband, arguing with him, and refusing sex are non-responsive to Osusu membership. The paper explored entrepreneurship as one of the transmission mechanisms for the impact of micro-credit on domestic violence. Participation in the scheme increases the probability of owning a business. Our results suggest that policies that increase access to microfinance amongst women have the potential to reduce domestic violence through empowering women to establish businesses. Further, microfinance needs to be coupled with legal and institutional support for women to reduce all forms of domestic violence, including those that are non-responsive to such micro-finance interventions as Osusu.

10-Year Study of Christian Church Support for Domestic Violence Victims: 2005-2015.

Religious beliefs play a significant role in the lives of victims of domestic violence. Victims find strength in their faith and would rather endure the violence at all costs to keep a family or a marriage together, than to compromise their faith by leaving. This 10 -year study explored the climate of support for victims of domestic violence among Christian clergy and church members between 2005 and 2015. Using a convenience sample, surveys were sent out to congregations in the Upper Midwest in 2005 and 2015. The survey included demographics; two items measuring perception of domestic violence in the congregation and community; six Likert Scale items regarding agreement with statements concerning leaving an abusive marriage; four "Yes-No" items regarding the impact of faith in leaving, support of the congregation, community resources, and clergy as counselors. The clergy's survey had the same questions plus open-ended questions about their skills in counseling victims, their congregation's support for victims, community resources, and beliefs that could impact a victim's choice in leaving. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple frequencies, and bivariate correlations. Narrative data were analyzed using content analysis. The results of this study indicated that change is slow. Members want their clergy to become more educated in counseling and in speaking about domestic violence from the pulpit. Clergy felt comfortable in making referrals for professional counseling, while the majority of members would prefer counseling with their pastor if they were in a violent relationship. Both clergy and members want to create a safe and supportive environment for victims/survivors of violent relationships. Findings from this study exemplify the need for pastors to remove the silence about domestic violence in their congregations and address the misunderstood social religious beliefs that may bind a victim to the violence.

Perception of domestic violence among rural women in Kuje

Domestic violence has become a global social problem affecting women and girls across different socio-demographics and culture. Often times a greater attention is paid to the experiences of urban women and girls to the detriment of their counter parts in rural areas who constituted major victims.The study explored the experiences, awareness and perception of domestic violence among rural women in Kuje, Nigeria. A total of 130 respondents were selected using stratified and simple random sampling technique. In-depth interview was conducted on 13 women and market leaders across Kuje.The findings revealed that 43.8% of the respondents fall within 30 years and above age bracket, 26.9% had non-formal education, 67.7% were Christians, while 56.2 % were married A total of 97.7% of the respondents were aware of domestic violence, while 43.8% linked domestic violence to early marriage. There is a significant relationship between level of education and perception of what constituted domestic violence among the respondents. Qualitative data revealed that culture and family affected expectations and treatment of women in rural Nigeria.The study concluded that domestic violence affects women and girl child negatively, and recommended that a more vigorous advocacy campaign against it should be intensified through mass media, family, community and religious leaders. Government should intensify efforts on free and compulsory education to empower the populace and reduce poverty among families.

Understandings and Perceptions of Domestic Violence Among Newly Arrived Afghan Women in Australia.

Women's perceptions of domestic violence vary across societies and cultures and might change by moving to a new society. This study aims to explore newly arrived Afghan women's understandings and perceptions of domestic violence and whether they perceive this as acceptable. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 newly arrived Afghan women in Australia. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed inductively to generate and organize themes. The findings showed that informants had a sound knowledge and understanding of domestic violence, and many of them identified various forms of violence. Also, informants strongly rejected that violence against women be considered normal or acceptable.
