Exploring Funeral Directors' Experience and Perceived Impact of Providing Funeral Services During COVID-19 Restrictions.

The importance of ritual/ceremony following bereavement is well documented, however restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the freedom to bury loved ones according to beliefs/traditions. This study explores the experiences of staff providing funeral services during COVID-19 and considers the implications for supporting bereaved families. Fifty-eight staff (male, 72.4%; n = 42) from 17 counties in Ireland, completed a self-report survey assessing perceived impact of COVID-19, confidence providing services, and challenges and supports for practice during this time. Quantitative findings suggest moderate confidence in service provision and low perception of negative impact from COVID-19, while qualitative results highlight a contrast between a feeling of under-recognition at a policy level and a sense of being appreciated by the public. This study highlights the evolving role of the funeral sector in Ireland in supporting the bereaved, and the potential to capitalise on a genuine interest in contributing more to support beyond the funeral.

Emergency department staff perceptions about the care of children with mental health conditions

ObjectiveThe number of children with mental health (MH) conditions who present to the emergency department (ED) is increasing. This study aimed to gain insight into the lived experiences of ED staff caring for children with MH conditions and to understand perceptions of current ED resources and what is needed to optimize care. MethodsThis was a qualitative study informed by complexity science theory utilizing a phenomenological approach. We used purposeful sampling from urban and nonurban EDs with varying pediatric volume. Participants were pediatric emergency care coordinators and other ED staff. Semi-structured interviews were completed. The initial codebook was created using a concept driven approach. Constant comparative analysis and deductive reasoning was employed for thematic analysis. ResultsThematic saturation by consensus was achieved with 24 interviews. Analysis found an overarching theme of moral distress of ED staff, compounded by frustration with barriers to care and perceptions of negative impact on care of other ED patients. Participants suggested the need for creation of patient, caregiver, ED staff, and ED leadership resources to enhance care. ConclusionsED staff perceive children with MH conditions experience significant barriers to optimal care in the ED, which causes ED provider moral distress. Additionally, other ED patients are perceived to be subsequently negatively impacted. Our findings highlight urgency for funding for more resources that are dedicated to children in the ED setting to ensure both safe, patient-centered care, and to reduce the distress described by ED staff who care for them.

The increasing of development in Yogyakarta City gives rise to controversy. Physical development-oriented activities tend to pursue economic benefits with less regard for social and environmental impacts. The purpose of this paper will describe the community's assessment of the impact of regional development on environmental, socio-cultural and economic aspects. This research uses quantitative descriptive approach as the method. The perception of negative impact from built-up area development to the environmental aspect was represented by 128 people (32,0%) while no negative impact perception was represented by 272 people (68%). The perception of negative impact from built-up area development to the socio-cultural aspect was stated by the 83 respondents (20.8%) and 317 respondents (79.2%) presented no negative impact. Meanwhile, in the economic aspect, the perception of negative impact from built-up area developmment was expressed by 147 respondents (36.8%) and 253 respondents (63.2%) presented no negative impact. Oral health self-perception, dental caries, and pain: the role of dental fear underlying this association.

Oral health perception has multidimensional nature and can be influenced not only by clinical conditions but also by psychosocial characteristics. Dental fear could modify the association between dental caries and dental pain and the perception of negative impact. A cross-sectional study was conducted with (n = 1,196) children aged 8-12 years attending public and private schools in Pelotas/Brazil. Children were interviewed and examined. Oral health perception was assessed using a global oral health impact item. Crude and adjusted multivariable regression models were built and effect modification of dental fear in the association between clinical indicators and perception of impact was tested. Compared with children without fear and caries, children with fear and dental caries presented a 1.45 higher prevalence of negative impact (95% CI: 1.18-1.79) while those without fear and with dental caries had a 1.31 higher prevalence (95% CI: 1.11-1.54) after adjustments. Also, the prevalence of negative perception was higher for children with fear and dental pain (PR: 2.95; 95% CI: 1.59-2.39) and for children without fear and with pain (PR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.29-1.80), compared to children without fear and pain. The presence of fear increased the effect of pain and caries on children's oral health perception.

Do maternal depression and anxiety influence children's oral health-related quality of life?

This study aimed to investigate the influence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in young mothers on their perception in relation to their children's oral health-related quality of life (COHRQoL). This cross-sectional study was carried out in Pelotas, Southern Brazil, and it was nested in a cohort of adolescent mothers having their prenatal care in public health service, starting in 2008. When the children were aged 24-36months, they and their mothers were interviewed and submitted to clinical examination by a trained team. Socioeconomic, educational, behavioural and psychological assessments were collected in the interview and oral examination investigated caries and gingival bleeding (in mothers) and caries and dental trauma (in children). Maternal perception of impact on COHRQoL was evaluated by Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). The outcome in the present study was the occurrence of impact on COHRQoL (ECOHIS≥2), that is the presence of at least one ECOHIS item reported as occasionally (score 2), often (score 3) or very often (score 4). Analysis was conducted using Poisson regression with robust variance and obtained prevalence ratios (PR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI). This study comprised 537 mother-child dyads. After adjustment, higher scores of COHRQoL remained significantly associated with depressive symptoms (PR=1.80, 95% CI: 1.36-2.38) and maternal anxiety symptoms (PR=2.28, 95% CI: 1.72-3.00). Mothers with anxiety symptoms or depressive symptoms had a prevalence of impact 91% higher when compared with mothers without any symptoms (PR=1.91; CI 95% 1.35-2.68), and mothers with both symptoms had almost 2.5 times higher risk of perception of negative impact on COHRQoL (PR=2.48; CI 95% 1.78-3.45). Poorer COHRQoL was associated with maternal depression and anxiety symptoms.

Perspectives and Attitudes of Jordanian Male College Students on Breast Cancer Screening.

The purpose of this study is to understand the attitudes of young Jordanian men towards breast cancer screening practices. A qualitative descriptive design informed by Clendenin and Connelly was used. Thirty-seven in-depth semi-structured individual audiotaped interviews were conducted. The analysis of the men's attitudes toward breast cancer captures the perception that breast cancer is an illness that occurs mainly later in life. This was associated with the perception of negative impact of cancer diagnosis on a young woman's social status and family role. Men believed that breast cancer preventive practices must be performed in a similar context of women's religious and cultural background. Younger generations are in need for health education related to breast cancer and its screening. It is important to provide support and guidance for young men to be more involved in providing early detection of breast cancer.

Quality of life related to oral health: contribution from social factors

Sociodental indicators have been widely used in epidemiological research related to oral health, as they add the dimension of the impact of oral health on the quality of life of individuals and populations. Various studies have been done in order to validate new instruments to assess these subjective perceptions, however, the association between social parameters and impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) has not been systematically studied, thus there is still doubt as to the role of the main social variables as OHRQoL impact modulators. This study aims to systematically review the literature in order to evidence the association between six social parameters and OHRQoL. Based on six exclusion criteria, the literature search revealed 40 eligible publications for analyses. The frequency of expected (positive) association between the social parameters and OHRQoL was greater than the non-expected (negative) associations for the six parameters. The social conditions most clearly associated with the perception of negative impact on OHRQoL were: women, with poor education and low income, immigrants or people belonging to minority ethnic groups.

How do I sound to me? Perceived changes in communication in Parkinson's disease

Objective: To examine self and carer perceived changes in communication associated with Parkinson's disease and relate these to speech intelligibility, gender, age and other disease measures. Design: Cross-sectional survey of a hospital- and community-based sample of 176 people with Parkinson's disease and their carers using a questionnaire based on semantic differential techniques. Participants: One hundred and four people with Parkinson's disease with no history of communication difficulties prior to onset of their Parkinson's disease and 45 primary carers who returned completed questionnaires. Main outcome measures: Differences in ratings for `before' the onset of Parkinson's disease versus present status. Results: There was a strong perception of negative impact on communication between `before' and `now', irrespective of age and gender and largely independent of disease severity and duration, intelligibility and cognitive status. Activities of daily living (assessed by Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) II) and depression rating scale scores had the strongest association with change (adjusted R 2 0.27). There was a significant correlation between the rank order of perceived change in features examined in people with Parkinson's disease versus their carers, though in general carers rated change as having less impact. Conclusions: Parkinson's disease exercises a strong influence on communication even before apparent alterations to intelligibility or motor status (UPDRS).

Forest Service Grazing Permittee Perceptions of the Endangered Species Act in Southeastern Arizona

This study reports the results of a survey of Coronado National Forest grazing permittees about their attitudes regarding the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the management of threatened and endangered (T&E) species on grazing allotments in southeastern Arizona. A majority of respondents perceived negative impacts from ESA implementation. However, the degree of impact remained independent of the number of listed species on allotments and of the potential for restrictions on those allotments. Perceptions of negative impact and attitudes toward T&E species policies were more related to attitudes toward federal regulation. Permittees broadly supported the idea of species conservation and expressed willingness to work with federal agencies but did not perceive the federal agencies as having the same responsiveness to their concerns. A more proactive agency strategy with science-based, focused recovery objectives coupled with economic incentives could improve support for species recovery efforts.

A Comparison of Linear, Fixed-Form Computer-Based Testing versus Traditional Paper-and-Pencil-Format Testing in Veterinary Medical Education

Computerized testing has made significant inroads into veterinary education. Traditional paper-and-pencil examination formats are being replaced by computer-based testing (CBT). Computer-administered, fixed-form tests, because they mimic most closely the familiar fixed-response paper-and-pencil test formats, might intuitively seem to be inherently equivalent to their paper-and-pencil counterparts. However, research examining test-mode effects on student performance presents a very mixed picture. Additionally, students often report that they feel their performance is adversely affected by CBT and that their grades on the computer-based exams are lower than they would have been on the more familiar paper-and-pencil format. In order to address student perceptions of negative impact and the mixed nature of the published research results on the topic, a study was conducted to assess whether the transition from paper-and-pencil to equivalent linear CBT exams did, in fact, affect students' examination scores. This study found no evidence for significant test-mode effects on student scores as a result of the introduction of computer-based testing into the veterinary curriculum.
