Perceived Innovation Attributes and Acceptance of Chatbots as Determined by Consumer Characteristics

Purpose - The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of chatbots' innovation attributes on the innovation acceptance for consumers who have used chatbots to purchase fashion products that account for a large share of transactions in mobile shopping. Research design, data, and methodology - Data were collected from Korean consumers aged 20 to 49 who had experience using chatbots when purchasing fashion-related products via mobile circumstances. After a pilot survey of 31 customers, pre-questionnaire was revised for the final test, and the final questionnaire was distributed to 1,500 subjects. Out of these, 244 were retrieved. After excluding 48 inappropriate responses, 196 were used for statistical analysis. Frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, regression analysis and independent t-test using SPSS 23.0 were employed for data analyses. Results - First, four factors of chatbots' attributes were extracted: relative advantages and compatibility, complexity, sensibility, and diversity. Second, two factors were extracted for fashion leadership: fashion opinion leadership and fashion innovativeness. Two groups based on the fashion leadership were identified: active innovation adopters and passive innovation adopters. Third, relative advantages and compatibility, diversity, sensibility of innovation attributes were found to have effects on the innovation acceptance in order. Fourth, significant differences were found in sensibility of innovation attributes and innovation acceptance in groups by marital status and age. The married in their 30s and 40s perceived sensibility as a more important attribute of chatbots than the unmarried in their twenties. Among the groups of different income levels, meaningful differences were found in diversity of innovation attributes and innovation acceptance. Fifth, there were significant differences found in relative advantages and compatibility, sensibility of innovation attributes, and acceptance of Innovation among the groups by fashion leadership. Active innovation adopters were found to be more aware of the importance of relative advantages and compatibility, and sensibility of innovation attributes, and innovation acceptance. Conclusions - The present study provides chatbots' marketing strategies for fashion items need to be modified by demographic characteristics and fashion leadership. Particularly, fashion leadership was found to be an important factor in determining the perception of innovation attribute as well as innovation acceptance.

Dissemination effort, innovation attributes, and variations in innovation dissemination rate

Innovation-decision type, communication channels, social system, and change agents’ promotion effort influence innovation adoption, but 49–87% of variance in adoption rates is explained by perceived innovation attributes (Rogers 1995). Relationships between adoption rates and these variables are much researched but very little research has been done to determine the relative contribution of these five variables acting jointly. In the same innovation-decision type, communication channels and social system, relative contribution of dissemination effort, linkages and perceived innovation attributes are jointly explored in partial correlation analysis using median effort scores of promotion agents’ and adopters’ perceptions of 15 innovation attributes of 26 innovative practices in a package actively promoted by change agents. When linkages are adequately provided, dissemination effort explains 12.7% of variance in rates comparing well with the greatest response to change agent effort of 3–16%, occurring when opinion leaders adopt (Rogers 1995). It is more than the contribution of any one of 15 attributes studied but less than their total contribution of 20.7% where simplicity alone explains 11.5% of variations.

Activity-based innovations in the UK manufacturing sector: Extent, adoption process patterns and contingency factors

This study defines Activity Based Innovations (ABI) as ‘any management accounting practice that uses the concept of ‘activities’ as its hard core’. Based on this definition, this study investigates the extent of ABI adoption in UK manufacturing business units, explores the adoption process patterns, and examines the influence of nine factors on ABI initiation and adoption; and five factors on ABI extent of use. These factors relate to the perceived innovation attributes, organisational factors and the perceived environmental uncertainty. Data were collected by mail survey questionnaire of a random sample of business units, with questionnaire design and distribution based on Dillman's Tailored Design Method.Analysis indicates that 32% of respondents are serious ABI users. This is higher than previous UK surveys and could reflect the wide definition used in this survey, or, more likely, increasing take-up of ABI. The study also reveals that, based on a wide definition of ABI together with detailed analysis of stages of implementation, almost 72% of the business units sampled have had experience or interest in ABI and we therefore conclude that ABI can now be regarded as mainstream management accounting practice. Moreover, this study reveals that a large group of respondents adopted non-unitary or ad hoc adoption process patterns not reported in previous literature. Significantly, in 11% of cases ABI adoption was mandated on business units. Multivariate analysis reveals that top management support and level of overhead were associated with ABI initiation and adoption while, at the initiation stage, the ABI attributes, relative advantage and cost were also significant. The extent of ABI use was associated with top management support and an ABI champion.This is the first study that investigates activity-based innovations as a set of inter-related techniques. Its results show that the adoption process could follow different patterns and highlight the importance of including innovation attributes in comprehensive contingency studies. Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of controlling for forced adoption cases, the organisational variables of top management support and innovation champion, and any innovation-specific contextual factors (such as level of overhead) in management accounting innovation studies.

Investigating the structural relationship among perceived innovation attributes, intention to use and actual use of mobile learning in an online university in South Korea

<p>The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of perceived attributes of innovation, that is, relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability on learners’ use of mobile learning. Specifically, this study employed structural equation modeling in order to examine the causal relationships among perceived attributes of innovation, learners’ intention to use mobile learning and the actual use of mobile learning. Analysis of 200 college student respondents who registered for a course offered by an online university in South Korea revealed that relative advantage and complexity had significant effects on the intention to use mobile learning, whereas trialability and observability did not. Further, the intention to use mobile learning had a direct positive effect on learners’ actual use of mobile learning.</p><p> </p>

Internet adoption and usage patterns among Students in selected South African Universities

This study examines the case of student adoption and usage patterns of the Internet as an innovation in delivering important services that include financial services. The quantitative approach employed in this study utilizes an extended version of Rogers’ model of perceived innovation attributes. Consistent with previous studies, the perceived innovation attributes were found to be important determinants of students’ adoption decisions. However, two dimensions, namely relative advantage and perceived usefulness were found to influence this consumer groups’ adoption decisions more prominently, thus highlighting the complex nature of the innovation and adoption decisions for Internet services users.

Innovation attributes and pedagogical quality: a concretization of joint theories on course management systems acceptance

The utilization of information and communication technologies in support of teaching and learning is still on its way to expand its potentials in higher education. Facing different venues of course delivery, computer-mediated communication technologies seem to be the most efficient and cost-effective. Since the mid-1990s, course management systems (CMSs) have gradually evolved, and taken an irreplaceable important role in higher education. From the perspectives of pedagogical impact and instructional resource consumption, Morgan (2003) considered that CMSs form the academic system equivalent of enterprise resource planning systems. Based on an extensive review on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) at the outset, this study bridges the TAM and IDT, and proposes a conceptual model of the acceptance of CMSs to acknowledge antecedents (i.e., innovation attributes, self-efficacy (SE), pedagogical quality (PQ) and perceived evaluation of function (EF)). Theoretically, the perceived innovation attributes of CMSs impact users’ perceived usefulness (PU) and actual use (AU). The antecedents, such as SE, PQ, and EFs, are also anticipated to have impacts on the AU and use of perception. PU is influenced by perceived ease of use (PEOU), while behavioral intention (BI) is concurrently influenced by PEOU and PU. Moreover, AU is influenced by BI. Finally, discussion and suggestions for future research of the proposed model are also provided.

Comparison Between Early High-Definition Television Owners and Non-Owners

A national random telephone survey was conducted to profile early high-definition television (HDTV) adopters based on demographics, media use, interpersonal communication, social participation, cosmopoliteness, perceived innovation attributes of new communication technologies, and ownership of communication technologies. Of all respondents, 21% reported owning an HDTV set at home. In the primary logistic regression, Web news reading, religious service attendance, complexity, trialability, and ownership of communication technologies were significant predictors of HDTV adoption.

A study on e-learning take-up intention from an innovation adoption perspective: A case in China

This research aims to examine, from an innovation adoption perspective, Chinese students’ intention of taking up e-learning degrees. A survey of Chinese students was conducted to reveal their perceptions concerning innovation attributes relevant to e-learning and their intentions of taking e-learning programmes provided by UK universities. Given the rapid development in e-learning and its potential impact on how learning takes place, this research argues that e-learning take-up represents adoption of an innovation in educational services, rather than just an IT technology. It therefore examined e-learning adoption using Rogers’s relational model of perceived innovation attributes. Rogers’s model was adapted to the e-learning context. A questionnaire survey was developed to collect data from a sample of Chinese students (n=215). Prior to final analysis the dimensionality and validity of the implementation of Rogers relational model was assessed. Findings suggested that only perceived compatibility and trialability have significant influence on e-learning adoption intention.

Adoption of mobile commerce in the air travel sector: A qualitative survey of attitudes

The study presented in this paper examines the case of the customer adoption of an air travel innovation, namely delivering through mobile telephones electronic tickets as well as boarding passes and other related services for air travel, which may be viewed as an innovation in service delivery. The qualitative study reported here adopted Rogers' model of perceived innovation attributes and was augmented by Bauer's framework of perceived risk. Participants in focus groups were categorized according to their attitudes towards buying electronic tickets for air travel through mobile phones. The perceived innovation attributes were identified to be significant determinants of travellers' adoption decisions and practices. In addition, two more dimensions (compatibility with a person's values and previous experience with the product category) were found to influence travellers' adoption decisions, stressing the high complexity of the adoption decisions for mobile phone-based air travel service innovations. The findings have practical value for organizations in the air travel sector as well as for Global Distribution Systems (GDSs) and traditional travel agents. .

An Innovation Adoption Study of Online E-Payment in Chinese Companies

Adoption of IT innovations is attracting increasing attention. Researchers are particularly interested in factors that affect the adoption of IS and IT innovations. Innovation diffusion theory is used frequently to evaluate the effect of perceived innovation attributes and the adoption of innovations. Nevertheless, explanatory power of perceived innovation attributes varies across different innovations. Given the importance of online e-payment to the further development of e-commerce and its importance as a payment innovation, this research examines the adoption of online e-payment by business enterprises using Rogers’ relational model of perceived innovation attributes and rate of adoption. The findings indicate that only perceived compatibility has significant influence on online e-payment adoption of Chinese companies. It is hoped that this research can help other researchers with related statistical procedures and analytical steps in their study of IS/IT adoption using innovation diffusion theory.

The Diffusion of Outdoor Adventure Leadership Degree Programs in the United States

Due to an increasing demand for outdoor adventure activities and services, a need for more professional outdoor leaders has arisen. Colleges and universities in the United States have addressed this need by developing degree programs in Outdoor Adventure Leadership (OL). OL degree programs represent an innovation within higher education. The two-fold purpose of this study was first, to determine if a reliable measure of OL program diffusion could be constructed based on perceived innovation attributes (PIAs) and second, to explore the relative importance of the attributes to OL program adoption. Measuring instrument development led to 37 attributes within eight PIA categories. Questionnaires that allowed for reliability testing of the subscales as well as assessment of the relative importance of the PIAs to OL degree program adoption were sent to an OL program representative at each of the eligible programs in the United States. The majority of the subscales had acceptable reliability scores and the most important PIAs to program adoption were leadership, compatibility and low complexity. Future research should include scale refinement and testing in other countries to determine if the pattern of PIAs for OL degree adoption is similar to that found in the United States.

Computer technology adoption in Saudi Arabia: Correlates of perceived innovation attributes

In this paper we investigate how perceived attributes of computer technology influence its rate of adoption in the workplace. In order to achieve this, the diffusion of innovation literature was reviewed looking for a set of common attributes that could be responsible for the largest rate of adoption. The literature suggests that Rogers' five attributes of innovation namely, relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability explain up to 87% of the innovation rate of adoption. About 1200 knowledge workers in 56 public and private medium and large organizations across Saudi Arabia of different managerial levels and spanning a wide spectrum of industries and services have participated in this study. The findings highlight the role and direction of these factors toward computer technology adoption in developing countries. This should help decision makers in this part of the world cultivate the positively correlating factors to enhance computer technology adoption while trying to reduce the effects of the negative factors. We contend that the findings are also valuable for practitioners from western cultures in applying computer-based information systems solutions to developing countries.
