Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has pledged to listen to what the pay review body (RB) has to say about the pay cap for nurses. That's all very well, but it is worth remembering that he voted against scrapping the cap in a Commons vote in June. So we won't be holding our breaths for a change of heart.

The widening gap.

Differences between the employment situation of NHS nurses working in Scotland and England are becoming ever more pronounced. This was reinforced recently in the report from the NHS Pay Review Body (RB) on staff pay in Scotland.

The battle for fair pay can still be won.

This year's report from the NHS Pay Review Body (RB) contains strong words and stark messages listing 'public-sector pay policy under stress, significant supply shortages in a number of staff groups and geographical areas, widespread concerns about recruitment, retention and motivation, inflation set to rise and further real-terms pay cuts on the horizon'. In short, according to the RB, the NHS is reaching a tipping point.

How wages compare

In the autumn, the NHS Pay Review Body (RB) will take evidence from government, employers and nurses' unions. It will then deliberate before making recommendations on what should be a pay rise in April 2017. But as NHS nurses know only too well, this supposedly independent system has been compromised by top down pay freezes initiated by the Westminster government as part of its 'austerity' measures.

As cost of living grows, a 1% rise won't go far.

A pay rise of no more than 1% is what nurses in England can expect in the coming year.
