Due to people`s internet use growth and proliferation of ubiquitous technology, the internet addiction is becoming a social issue. However, the current adults` self-diagnosis measure about internet addiction, the K-scale, is a normal diagnostic method, which it does not consider user characteristics. In this research, we will propose a new internet addiction diagnostic method based on users` non-duty internet activities by using some questionnaire items to collect users` basic internet patterns used on duty related or non-duty related web sites. Since we simply ask for the basic internet usage pattern to each user who does not like to check frankly questionnaire items in the K-scale, the proposed method can find some hidden internet addicts compared to the K-scale with the SPSS statistical analysis tool.

Managing The Evolution Of A Revolution: Marketing Implications Of Internet Media Usage Among College Students

It is no surprise that internet usage among college students has seen a marked increase in recent years. The increasing usage of this medium portends direct, negative impacts relative to the use of other media by this important market segment. Marketers are interested in internet usage information in order to determine the best methods for tapping into this potential market. Research focused on internet usage patterns of college students was conducted. Usage patterns by student classification and gender were studied. Specific use of the Facebook, MySpace and YouTube websites were investigated.

Problematic Internet Use in high school students in Guangdong Province, China.

BackgroundProblematic Internet Use (PIU) is a growing problem in Chinese adolescents. There are many risk factors for PIU, which are found at school and at home. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of PIU and to investigate the potential risk factors for PIU among high school students in China.Methodology/Principal FindingsA cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 14,296 high school students were surveyed in four cities in Guangdong province. Problematic Internet Use was assessed by the 20-item Young Internet Addiction Test (YIAT). Information was also collected on demographics, family and school-related factors and Internet usage patterns. Of the 14,296 students, 12,446 were Internet users. Of those, 12.2% (1,515) were identified as problematic Internet users (PIUs). Generalized mixed-model regression revealed that there was no gender difference between PIUs and non-PIUs. High study-related stress, having social friends, poor relations with teachers and students and conflictive family relationships were risk factors for PIU. Students who spent more time on-line were more likely to develop PIU. The habits of and purposes for Internet usage were diverse, influencing the susceptibility to PIU.Conclusions/SignificancePIU is common among high school students, and risk factors are found at home and at school. Teachers and parents should pay close attention to these risk factors. Effective measures are needed to prevent the spread of this problem.

Internet addiction: prevalence, discriminant validity and correlates among adolescents in Hong Kong

Despite increasing concern over the potential adverse effects of excessive internet use, especially in young people, there is some debate over its definition, magnitude and discriminant validity. To examine the prevalence of adolescents' internet addiction in Hong Kong, China; to test its differentiation from other correlates; and to examine its relationships with correlates in a representative community sample of adolescents. A two-wave panel household survey with 208 adolescents (aged 15-19 years) was conducted. Participants were asked to self-report their patterns of internet usage, symptoms of internet addiction, suicidal ideation, psychiatric symptoms and psychosocial conditions during the study period. The prevalence rate for having five or more symptoms of internet addiction was estimated to be 6.7% (95% CI 3.3-10.2). The discriminatory characteristic of internet addiction was marginally demonstrated. Positive dose-response relationships were found between the number of symptoms of internet addiction and 1-year changes in scores for suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms. Evidence supports the specificity of internet addiction and its symptoms seem to co-occur with individuals' suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms.

Political Participation of Teenagers in the Information Era

This study intends to examine the environments and the characteristics of political participation of teenage political participation. The 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea is used as the case of this study. Traditionally, teenagers in Korea have been known to disengage from political affairs because they are usually worn by intense academic challenge and competition. In that sense, participation of teenagers at such a large scale shown in the 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea can only be explained as a huge shift in political preference of teenagers and conventional social norms. In that sense, the case of 2008 Candlelight Protests of Korea has shown great implications for the political potential of new media, which is capable of revolutionizing the political socialization patterns of youth. Survey results demonstrated that the Internet had become an important tool from which the teenagers collected political information and channels which they used to organize and mobilize. Numbers also showed that the degree of the youth’s sociopolitical interests were higher than the adult’s. Another notable fact found was that female students showed more aggressive involvement than male students and this could be explained by the difference in the Internet usage pattern between male and female students. In using media, adolescent girls displayed more relationship and objective-oriented behaviors than the boys.

Internet-Usage Patterns of Immigrants in the Process of Intercultural Adaptation

This paper investigates Internet-usage patterns of immigrants, and seeks to identify the correlation between Internet use and intercultural adaptation. The study focuses on mainland Chinese immigrants in Singapore, and was conducted via a nationwide telephone survey. The results show that immigrants tend to change their preferences on Internet use to reflect their residence in the host country. In particular, the longer an immigrant resides in the host country, the less likely they would be to surf their original country's websites and the more likely they would be to communicate with local people via the Internet. More importantly, differences in Internet usage are found to have a significant impact on immigrants' intercultural adaptation. In an online environment, the social communication in the host country is a critical component that can facilitate or impede immigrants' successful adaptation to the host country, whereas ethnic social communication also plays a role at the initial stage of transition.

The Associations among Computer-Mediated Communication, Relationships, and Well-being

Social support provided by interpersonal relationships is one of the most robust correlates of well-being. Self-disclosure serves as a basic building block of these relationships. With the rapid growth of the Internet in recent years, the question remains how self-disclosure, and subsequently relationships and well-being, differ when people communicate over the Internet rather than in person. The purpose of this article is to describe current Internet usage patterns as well as explore the association of Internet usage and well-being. Additionally, it directly compares the perceived benefits of face-to-face communication and computer-mediated communication. A questionnaire was administered to 99 undergraduates to measure Internet usage patterns, communication partners, self-disclosure, extraversion, and subjective well-being. Although Internet communication was found to be common, individuals perceived computer-mediated communication to be less useful than face-to-face communication. In addition, increased Internet usage was associated with decreased well-being. Implications are discussed in terms of a new Internet paradox in which people increasingly use the Internet for communication, although they perceive it to be less beneficial than face-to-face interactions and it is associated with reduced well-being.

Online Public Relations in the Arab Governmental Websites

This paper examines the patterns of Internet usage by 81 governmental websites in the Arab World to enhance their relationship with the public and media. The study concludes that Arab governmental websites did not draw heavily on using the Internet as a public relations tool, and did not take full advantage of the dialogic capacities of the Internet, despite their emphasis on the promotional features of their organizations. The study also showed that Arab governmental websites have a strong interest in realizing public information and press/agentry models and low interest in the asymmetrical and symmetrical models. Significant shortcomings were detected in: the content provided to media and public; using online tools; and applying the dialogic communication.

Research portals in the arts and humanities

There has been dramatic growth in information communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure for the arts and humanities research community in recent years in the UK and elsewhere. No domain-wide survey of how researchers are using ICT and what they perceive their future needs to be has been undertaken previously and consequently what is needed in terms of a generic ICT infrastructure to support arts and humanities research is not well understood. The RePAH (Research Portals for the Arts and Humanities) Project is an AHRC funded study into the user needs for information portals to support research in the Arts and Humanities. It uses a combination of questionnaires, focus groups and Delphi opinion gathering, combined with server log-analysis data, to identify users' information discovery strategies, Internet usage patterns, awareness and attitudes towards current services and technologies and responses to what future portal developments can deliver. Responsibility for funding this kind of infrastructure is split between a number of different agencies. This makes sector-wide information gathering for strategic planning and development difficult. The results of this study may help providers to understand where the priorities lie for the arts and humanities research community and help users to appreciate some of the possibilities within their grasp.

Research Note—Social Interactions and the “Digital Divide”: Explaining Variations in Internet Use

Given the increasingly important role of the Internet in education, healthcare, and other essential services, it is important that we develop an understanding of the “digital divide.” Despite the widespread diffusion of the Web and related technologies, pockets remain where the Internet is used sparingly, if at all. There are large geographic variations, as well as variations across ethnic and racial lines. Prior research suggests that individual, household, and regional differences are responsible for this disparity. We argue for an alternative explanation: Individual choice is subject to social influence (“peer effects”) that emanates from geographic proximity; this influence is the cause of the excess variation. We test this assertion with empirical analysis of a data set compiled from a number of sources. We find, first, that widespread Internet use among people who live in proximity has a direct effect on an individual's propensity to go online. Using data on residential segregation, we test the proposition that the Internet usage patterns of people who live in more ethnically isolated regions will more closely resemble usage patterns of their ethnic group. Finally, we examine the moderating impact of housing density and directly measured social interactions on the relationship between Internet use and peer effects. Results are consistent across analyses and provide strong evidence of peer effects, suggesting that individual Internet use is influenced by local patterns of usage. Implications for public policy and the diffusion of the Internet are discussed.

Costs of Neutral/Unmanaged IP Networks

An important issue in "network neutrality" is the degree to which networks that comprise the Internet may be "managed" by their operators. This paper examines the current costs of unmanaged/neutral network technology and demonstrates that as customer Internet usage patterns evolve and become both more bandwidth-intensive and real-time oriented, a model of pure neutrality would be extremely expensive for consumers. Unmanaged network capacity sufficient to accommodate expected consumer demand growth currently would result in bills between $143 and $416 per month – depending on the customer’s level of TV viewing. Such fees would likely make unmanaged/neutral Internet service commercially prohibitive.

Co-creation and user-generated content–elderly people’s user requirements

There is an increasing demand on citizens to participate in social network websites and to create and share their own user-generated content (UGC), such as photographs, videos, and blogs. So far, little is known about how elderly people respond to these new trends and master the techniques required. This paper reports on three studies that investigated elderly people’s user requirements related to consumption, sharing and co-creation of UGC in new media. The first study, conducted in Norway, identifies patterns of Internet usage, age differences, and participation in online communities and the consumption, sharing and co-creation of UGC on a macro level. The second study, conducted in Belgium, investigated the social requirements of elderly people on a group level. The third study, also conducted in Belgium, investigated user and context requirements on an individual level. The results of the first study show that the elderly rarely participate in online communities and share audio-visual UGC. However, they embrace some aspects of the new media and more often express themselves politically. The results of the second study show that the elderly are very motivated to contribute with UGC, given the right circumstances. The results of the third study show that it is important for elderly people that they be able to use the new technologies easily and identifies their worries about using them.

Access to and use of the Internet by South African general practitioners

Introduction In the developed world, doctors use the Internet to support the delivery of health care. Their usage patterns are explained by Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations. There is no knowledge of Internet usage by doctors in the developing world. Methods In July 2006, 2600 survey forms were posted in the first national survey of South African (SA) General Practitioners’ (GPs) use of the Internet. A sample of non-responders was followed up. The aim was to determine SA GPs’ Internet usage patterns, to compare them to world usage, and to examine them in the light of Diffusion of Innovations. Results A 10% usable response rate was a major weakness, but similar surveys are unlikely to be more representative. 89% of SA GPs have Internet access, home usage is high, and overall usage patterns are equivalent to the usage patterns of international studies. Discussion In spite of the overall technological under-development in South Africa, as predicted by Diffusion of Innovations, SA GPs have adopted the technology, and use it for health care in much the same way as their international counterparts. Further studies on some of the details will be valuable. Conclusion The indications are that SA GPs will reap the benefits of the Internet as it continues to evolve, and translate these into improved health care delivery in South Africa.

Using the Technology Adoption Model to Analyze Internet Adoption and Use among Men and Women in Indonesia

AbstractThis research (a) investigates differences in Internet adoption; (b) identifies factors affecting Internet adoption; and (c) examines differences of Internet usage pattern between men and women in Indonesia. Using data from 714 respondents/students with various backgrounds, the research unveils that in general, Internet adoption among women are lower than that among men. Using Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the research also finds that the Internet adoption among women is affected by perceived ease of use rather than perceived usefulness. On the other hand, the Internet adoption among men is affected by perceived usefulness rather than perceived ease of use. Men are found to have a more flexible Internet access venue when compared to women. The research also gives evidence that Internet usage pattern among men and women differs. Proportion of women who use the Internet for chatting and study‐related activities is significantly larger than that of men. Conversely, proportion of men who use the Internet for reading online news, testing and downloading software, shopping, entertainment, seeking job vacancy, and visiting pornographic sites are larger than women. High cost Internet access and low access speed of the Internet and a lack of English proficiency are identified to be most severe obstacles of the Internet adoption in Indonesia.

Privacy preserving data mining of sequential patterns for network traffic data

As the total amount of traffic data in networks has been growing at an alarming rate, there is currently a substantial body of research that attempts to mine traffic data with the purpose of obtaining useful information. For instance, there are some investigations into the detection of Internet worms and intrusions by discovering abnormal traffic patterns. However, since network traffic data contain information about the Internet usage patterns of users, network users’ privacy may be compromised during the mining process. In this paper, we propose an efficient and practical method that preserves privacy during sequential pattern mining on network traffic data. In order to discover frequent sequential patterns without violating privacy, our method uses the N-repository server model, which operates as a single mining server and the retention replacement technique, which changes the answer to a query probabilistically. In addition, our method accelerates the overall mining process by maintaining the meta tables in each site so as to determine quickly whether candidate patterns have ever occurred in the site or not. Extensive experiments with real-world network traffic data revealed the correctness and the efficiency of the proposed method.

Internet adoption and usage patterns are different: Implications for the digital divide

There is a well-documented “digital divide” in internet connection. We ask whether a similar divide exists for internet usage. Using a survey of 18,439 Americans, we find that high-income, educated people were more likely to have adopted the internet by December 2001. However, conditional on adoption, low-income, less-educated people spend more time online. We examine four possible reasons for this pattern: (1) differences in the opportunity cost of leisure time, (2) differences in the usefulness of online activities, (3) differences in the amount of leisure time, and (4) selection. Our evidence suggests this pattern is best explained by differences in the opportunity cost of leisure time. Our results also help to determine the potential effects of internet-access subsidies.

Internet Use Patterns amongst Internationalizing Ghanaian Exporters

AbstractExport firms are critical to the success of developing economies like Ghana. The Internet presents export firms with organizational improvement options and ways by which their value chain activities can be enhanced. The current study focused on the Internet use patterns amongst internationalizing Ghanaian non‐traditional exporters (NTEs). Out of 150 questionnaires administered, 106 responses were obtained. We employed descriptive statistics in the presentation of results. The general pattern of Internet usage for information search varied among NTEs according to degree of internationalization. The most internationalized NTEs demonstrated a higher usage rate of the Internet for information search purposes, with about a third using the Internet for Public Relations (PR) activities, compared to less than one‐fifth of the least internationalized group using the Internet for PR activities. Use of the Internet as a payment medium (getting paid for exports or paying for raw material inputs they need for operations) was significantly low among all NTEs in this study.

Learning and teaching 24/7: daily internet usage patterns at nine Australian universities

PurposeThis paper seeks to look at the usage of the internet by students, academics and university administrators as part of their normal working day. It investigates whether access to computer facilities and the mode of study have any influence, or whether other factors need to be considered when providing services.Design/methodology/approachTo assess this, the paper considers the diurnal nature of general internet usage in Australia, addresses the daily average internet use at various Australian universities, and considers how much the usage profile says about the student profile and student study habits.FindingsWeb usage is high at the start of the work day and then peaks at the end of the work period, with another slight peak by 7 p.m., presumably after the dinner period, representing those who come on‐line in the evening.Originality/valueThe analysis of the proxy usage of nine Australian universities has shown that the vast majority of usage in the Victorian and South Australian universities in the sample is limited to office hours with 81 per cent of all usage occurring during the standard working hours and flexi‐time period between 08:00 and 18:00 (72 per cent between 09:00 and 17:00).
