Functional Gelato for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment

A large amount of organic waste is generated every year, mainly due to food waste, causing negative impacts on the environment. At the same time, cancer incidence and mortality are rapidly growing world-wide and have a great impact on patients' quality of life, especially during chemotherapy treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a sustainable gelato with orange peel for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The orange peel gelato developed presented protein content of high biological value, easily digested fat, low glycemic carbohydrate, phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant potential. The orange peel may be used to develop sustainable gelato aiming to increase the intake of bioactive compounds in the general population, control chemotherapy symptoms of oncological patients and to contribute to the environment by reducing the generation of organic waste.

Stress symptoms occur in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment independently of the level of physical activity.

The cancer patient is undergoing a set of procedures that affect the physical and psychological balance, which can generate stressful situations in the organism. In turn, physical activity helps to treat stress, promoting well-being and reducing anxiety. Our study aimed to verify the influence of physical activity practice on stress symptoms in patients undergoing oncological chemotherapy treatment. For this, we used Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms (ISSL) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) in 56 patients with cancer. Our data show that 45.4% of the participants exhibited stress scores, of which, 21.8% were at near to exhaustion, and 23.6% at exhaustion. We observed that 30% of them are considered sufficiently active, 25% insufficiently active, 45% sedentary. No association was observed between physical activity and stress. These findings indicate that stress symptoms occur in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment regardless of the level of physical activity.

Auto-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or chemotherapy? Meta-analysis of clinical choice for AML.

For patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are not candidates for allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) or do not have a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched donor, it is unclear whether autologous SCT (ASCT) has a better prognosis after the first complete response (CR1) compared to further chemotherapy treatment. A meta-analysis evaluating ASCT compared to further chemotherapy for AML patients in CR1 was performed. The Medline, Embase, Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and National Knowledge Infrastructure of China databases were searched for relevant literature as of May 26, 2023. Eligible studies included prospectively enrolled adults with AML and randomized first-time respondent patients who did not have a matched sibling donor. Fourteen randomized controlled trials were identified and included 4281 participants, of which 1499 patients received ASCT and 2782 underwent chemotherapy and continued follow-up. In patients with AML in CR1, a lower relapse rate was associated with ASCT compared to chemotherapy [odds ratio (OR) = 0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.41-0.57]. Significant disease-free survival (DFS; OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.02-1.84) and relapse-free survival (RFS; OR = 2.78, 95% CI = 1.28-6.02) ASCT benefits were documented, and there was no difference in the overall survival (OS) when the studies were pooled (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.85-1.48). The study results indicated that after the first remission, AML patients receiving autologous stem cell transplantation had higher DFS and RFS, similar OS, and lower relapse compared to patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. This indicated that autologous stem cell transplantation may have a better prognosis.

Salt Wasting Syndrome: Serial Cases

Hyponatremia is one of the electrolyte disturbances that can be found in patients with central nervous system disorders, the most cases of hyponatremia are the Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone/SIADH compared to hyponatremia in Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome/CSWS and it is not uncommon to also occur in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment without accompanying head abnormalities are referred to as Renal Salt Wasting Syndrome (RSWS). There is difficulty differentiating these two conditions due to almost the same clinical symptoms. Evaluation of volume status and monitoring of urate excretion fraction can help differentiate SIADH from RSWS and CSWS. Management requiring prompt diagnosis is essential to prevent severe hyponatremia from substantially causing cerebral edema and thereby reducing the risk of seizures. Fluid resuscitation therapy and sodium restoration are important. This case series report injured 2 CSWS patients after head trauma with different treatments and hyponatremia due to cisplatin induced RSWS.

Malnutrition status and related factors in gastric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Ho Chi Minh City oncology hospital

Chemotherapy is one type of systemic treatment for cancer that causes side effects on eating and energy supply, leading to weight loss and malnutrition. Detecting malnutrition early in gastric cancer patients plays a critical role in implementing an effective nutritional regimen that can improve their nutritional status, prevent weight loss, and enhance their ability to withstand and respond to chemotherapy. The cross-sectional study was performed on 95 patients in Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital from October 2021 to June 2022. According to the PG-SGA, MUAC, and BMI, the percentage of malnutrition are 69.5%, 33.7%, and 31.6%, respectively. There is a statistically significant connection between malnutrition rate by PG-SGA with age categories, cancer treatment methods, side effects of chemotherapy, and anemia.

This study aims to analyze the application of mHealth-based interventions to the side effects of treatment in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The method used is a systematic review of 4 databases, Sciendirect, Pro Quest, CINAHL, Pubmed, and Scopus, published from 2017 to 2022. This study's results show that using mHealth in patients undergoing chemotherapy can reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting, conserve energy, reduce neuropathic symptoms, improve healthy behavior in cancer patients, and reduce the incidence of mucositis and difficulty opening the mouth. Reducing complaints of nausea and vomiting is the most significant benefit of using mHealth. This is associated with complaints of nausea and vomiting, which occur most frequently in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In conclusion, using mHealth as a technology-based intervention strategy can reduce side effects in patient care, especially the side effects of chemotherapy treatment. There is a need to use mobile health interventions to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.

Do OCM-related increases in screening for depression and pain improve patient-reported symptoms?

299 Background: Many patients with cancer experience pain and depression during treatment. Attention to these conditions may improve wellbeing and survival. The CMS Oncology Care Model (OCM) incorporated practice-reported quality measures related to screening and management of pain and depression. We assessed screening and management of pain and emotional problems among OCM-participating practices. Methods: We used data from two sources. First, we assessed changes through the first 5 years of OCM in two NQF-endorsed quality measures reported by OCM practices twice yearly: 1) Screening for Depression and Follow-Up Plan; and 2) Pain Assessment and Management. The measures reflected the proportion of OCM patients who were assessed and received a follow-up plan if indicated. Second, we surveyed Medicare fee-for-service patients who had OCM episodes quarterly (N=179,445 respondents; response rate=45%). The survey assessed whether patients experienced symptoms of pain or emotional problems, such as anxiety or depression, and whether their cancer team tried to help address those symptoms if present. For the patient survey measures, we estimated risk-adjusted trends in patient responses over time, from the baseline survey through the first 5 years of OCM. Results: Practice-reported findings: Practices began reporting quality measures in the second six-month performance period (PP) of OCM. Practice-reported rates of depression screening and follow-up plan increased from 57.2% in PP2 to 77.9% in PP9, a 20.7 percentage point improvement (p<0.05); rates for pain assessment and management improved from 77.6% in PP2 to 88.8% in PP8 (difference: +11.2 percentage points, p<0.05). Patient-reported findings: At OCM’s start, 49.9% of patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at OCM practices reported they were bothered by emotional problems and 54.5% reported they were bothered by pain. Slightly fewer patients reported symptoms over time during OCM (quarterly time trend: -0.1% reporting symptoms, p<0.05 for both measures). Among patients reporting emotional problems at baseline, 44.2% reported that their care team “definitely” tried to help; there was no significant change over time. Among patients reporting pain at baseline, 75.3% reported that their care team “definitely” tried to help; slightly fewer respondents reported that their care team tried to help during OCM (quarterly time trend: -0.2%, p<0.05). Conclusions: Oncology practices participating in OCM reported substantial improvements in screening for pain and depression during OCM. However, patients’ experience with receiving care to address emotional needs and manage pain did not improve during OCM. Screening is an important first step for addressing pain and depression; additional efforts are needed to ensure that screening leads to meaningful improvements in symptom management.

Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Screening of Cyclophosphamide DNA Damage In Vitro and in Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment.

DNA alkylating drugs have been used as frontline medications to treat cancer for decades. Their chemical reaction with DNA leads to the blockage of DNA replication, which impacts cell replication. While this impacts rapidly dividing cancerous cells, this process is not selective and results in highly variable and often severe side effects in patients undergoing alkylating-drug based therapies. The development of biomarkers to identify patients who effectively respond with tolerable toxicities vs patients who develop serious side effects is needed. Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug and lacks biomarkers to evaluate its therapeutic effect and toxicity. Upon administration, CPA is metabolically activated and converted to phosphoramide mustard and acrolein, which are responsible for its efficacy and toxicity, respectively. Previous studies have explored the detection of the major DNA adduct of CPA, the interstrand DNA-DNA cross-link G-NOR-G, finding differences in the cross-link amount between Fanconi Anemia and non-Fanconi Anemia patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. In this study, we take advantage of our DNA adductomic approach to comprehensively profile CPA's and its metabolites' reactions with DNA in vitro and in patients undergoing CPA-based chemotherapy. This investigation led to the detection of 40 DNA adducts in vitro and 20 DNA adducts in patients treated with CPA. Moreover, acrolein-derived DNA adducts were quantified in patient samples. The results suggest that CPA-DNA damage is very complex, and an evaluation of DNA adduct profiles is necessary when evaluating the relationship between CPA-DNA damage and patient outcome.

Incidence of Candida Species Biofilms in Pediatric Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment

The oral thrush due to biofilms of Candida species is a common infection for the oral cavity of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, leading to oral infections. These biofilms, composed of Candida organisms, pose challenges in terms of diagnosis and treatment due to their increased resistance and ability to persist in the oral environment. This study aimed to determine the frequency of Candida species biofilm colonization in the oral cavity of pediatric cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. By examining the incidence of Candida sp. biofilms, this research provides valuable insights into the oral health challenges specific to children with cancer, emphasizing the need for targeted preventive and management strategies to address these infections effectively. In this study, a total of 100 oral cavity swabs were collected, with 50 swabs obtained from cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and suspected to have oral candidiasis, and the other 50 swabs collected from non-cancer healthy individuals serving as control. All swabs were cultured on Sabouraud Dextrose agar (SDA) media, followed by microscopic examination of positive samples. The API identification candida system was utilized for the identification of Candida species, along with the implementation of biochemical tests to further study the characteristics of the identified species.The findings demonstrated that out of the 50 cancer patients, approximately 47% (23 patients) exhibited positive yeast growth on SDA agar. Among the 50 non-cancer control cases, approximately 30% (15 cases) showed positive growth on SDA agar. Furthermore, using the API candida system, we confirmed the presence of candida species in 25 cases. Candida albicans was identified as the most prevalent species, followed by Candida parapsilosis, Candida krusei, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which were detected less frequently.In conclusion, there were a significant increase in Candida species among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment in comparison to non-cancer control individuals. This finding highlights the impact of chemotherapy on the prevalence of Candida infections in cancer patients, emphasizing the need for heightened attention and appropriate management strategies in this vulnerable population.

Primary breast lymphoma: a case series and review of the literature

BackgroundPrimary breast lymphoma (PBL) is a very rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), defined as a malignant primary lymphoma occurring in the breast in the absence of previously detected lymphoma localizations. Our study aims to retrospectively evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, and imaging findings and therapeutic features of breast lymphomas in patients with primary lymphoma of the breast.Materials and methodsThis is a retrospective study including 13 patients with primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the breast treated at the Salah Azaiez Institute of Oncology from 2000 to 2019. This sample includes 1 case of follicular lymphoma, 2 cases of large T-cell lymphoma, and 10 cases of large B-cell lymphoma.ResultsPatients included in the study were aged between 17 and 89 years (average age of 52.6 years). All patients were referred because of a lump in the breast, and only one patient consulted with inflammatory signs in the breast. The average clinical size of the tumor was 7.2 cm, with a maximum of 15 cm. Mammography showed an oval mass with circumscribed margins in the majority of cases. Ultrasound showed in most cases a hypoechoic irregular mass or multilobulated mass with irregular margins and hypervascular on color Doppler. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on only three patients and showed a spiculated lesion with polycyclic limits. Eight patients underwent surgery. In our study breast lymphomas involved 10 cases of large B-cell lymphoma, one case of follicular lymphoma, and two cases of large T-cell lymphoma. In this series, 11 patients had localized stages (I + II) at diagnosis, and 2 patients had disseminated stages (stage III) of primary breast lymphoma. Seven patients underwent chemotherapy treatment alone, and five had chemotherapy with radiotherapy. The median follow-up of our patients was 53 months, ranging from 1 to 177 months. Overall survival was 71% at 3 years and 51% at 5 years.ConclusionPrimary breast lymphoma is an uncommon type of breast malignancy. The optimal treatment modality is still in question because of the rarity of this disease. However, the use of combination therapy produces the most favorable results. Surgery is not yet recommended.

Glucocorticoid Receptors Drive Breast Cancer Cell Migration and Metabolic Reprogramming via PDK4.

Corticosteroids act on the glucocorticoid receptor (GR; NR3C1) to resolve inflammation and are routinely prescribed to breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment to alleviate side effects. Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) account for 15% to 20% of diagnoses and lack expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors as well as amplified HER2, but they often express high GR levels. GR is a mediator of TNBC progression to advanced metastatic disease; however, the mechanisms underpinning this transition to more aggressive behavior remain elusive. We previously showed that tissue/cellular stress (hypoxia, chemotherapies) as well as factors in the tumor microenvironment (transforming growth factor β [TGF-β], hepatocyte growth factor [HGF]) activate p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), which phosphorylates GR on Ser134. In the absence of ligand, pSer134-GR further upregulates genes important for responses to cellular stress, including key components of the p38 MAPK pathway. Herein, we show that pSer134-GR is required for TNBC metastatic colonization to the lungs of female mice. To understand the mechanisms of pSer134-GR action in the presence of GR agonists, we examined glucocorticoid-driven transcriptomes in CRISPR knock-in models of TNBC cells expressing wild-type or phospho-mutant (S134A) GR. We identified dexamethasone- and pSer134-GR-dependent regulation of specific gene sets controlling TNBC migration (NEDD9, CSF1, RUNX3) and metabolic adaptation (PDK4, PGK1, PFKFB4). TNBC cells harboring S134A-GR displayed metabolic reprogramming that was phenocopied by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4) knockdown. PDK4 knockdown or chemical inhibition also blocked cancer cell migration. Our results reveal a convergence of GR agonists (ie, host stress) with cellular stress signaling whereby pSer134-GR critically regulates TNBC metabolism, an exploitable target for the treatment of this deadly disease.

Growth differentiation factor 11 delivered by dairy Lactococcus lactis strains modulates inflammation and prevents mucosal damage in a mice model of intestinal mucositis.

Mucositis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa that debilitate the quality of life of patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments. In this context, antineoplastic drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil, provokes ulcerations in the intestinal mucosa that lead to the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines by activating the NF-κB pathway. Alternative approaches to treat the disease using probiotic strains show promising results, and thereafter, treatments that target the site of inflammation could be further explored. Recently, studies reported that the protein GDF11 has an anti-inflammatory role in several diseases, including in vitro and in vivo results in different experimental models. Hence, this study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of GDF11 delivered by Lactococcus lactis strains NCDO2118 and MG1363 in a murine model of intestinal mucositis induced by 5-FU. Our results showed that mice treated with the recombinant lactococci strains presented improved histopathological scores of intestinal damage and a reduction of goblet cell degeneration in the mucosa. It was also observed a significant reduction of neutrophil infiltration in the tissue in comparison to positive control group. Moreover, we observed immunomodulation of inflammatory markers Nfkb1, Nlrp3, Tnf, and upregulation of Il10 in mRNA expression levels in groups treated with recombinant strains that help to partially explain the ameliorative effect in the mucosa. Therefore, the results found in this study suggest that the use of recombinant L. lactis (pExu:gdf11) could offer a potential gene therapy for intestinal mucositis induced by 5-FU.

What is the optimal country for minimum COVID-19 morbidity and mortality rates?

The SARS-CoV-2 is a deceptive virus. Despite the remarkable progress in genetic sequencing and subsequent vaccine development, the world continues to grapple with the ominous threats of rapidly appearing SARS-CoV-2 variants. The objective of this manuscript is to rank world countries based on the anticipated scope of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, measured in terms of prevalence per 1 million persons, from the lowest to the highest. The ranking of 162 countries is based on predictions of empirical models, which include three explanatory variables: hospital beds per thousand persons, population density, and the median age of the country's population. Referring to the COVID-19 scope of morbidity, the lowest likelihood of infection is obtained in Niger and Mali, where the dominant characteristic is the young median age (15.1-16.4years). Referring to the COVID-19 scope of mortality, the lowest likelihood is obtained in Singapore. For Singapore, the dominant feature is the high population density. The optimal solution is intensive vaccination campaigns in the initial phase of the pandemic, particularly among countries with low GDP per capita. Yet, vaccinations may work only where the personal immune system is healthy and thus respond by creating antibodies to the SARS-CoV2 virus. Referring to populations that lack the natural protection of the healthy immune system and thus cannot be vaccinated (e.g., old people, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments), a complementary solution might be coordination between countries and the establishment of field hospitals, testing laboratories, isolation of areas, humanitarian aid-in the same manner of treatment in other disasters like earthquakes.

Food safety knowledge attitude and practices of oncology nurses, in Lebanese hospitals

BackgroundCancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, have a higher risk to foodborne infections as compared to other populations. Oncology nurses, having a direct significant contact with these patients, could be the first information source concerning food safety and play a pivotal role in reducing these risks. ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the level of knowledge regarding food safety among oncology nurses, as well as their attitudes and practices in private hospitals in Lebanon. MethodsA self-administered questionnaire was filled by Oncology nurses (n = 134) working in eighteen private hospitals in Lebanon located in Mount Lebanon (n = 11) and Beirut (n = 7). ResultsOverall, oncology nurses scored 76%, 95%, 86.9% and 83.4% on the knowledge, attitude, and practices questions, and overall composite knowledge, attitude, practices (KAP) score, respectively. Knowledge scores were higher among nurses holding a graduate degree (mean = 85; p < 0.05), and those who attended a training course (mean = 79; p < 0.05). Attitude scores of nurses who read brochures were higher (p < 0.001). Attending conferences on food safety showed statistically significant effect on better practice scores (p < 0.001). ConclusionAccordingly, the findings highlight the need to develop standardized food safety curriculum and training necessary to allow oncology nurses to contribute to the education of cancer patients and decrease their risk of foodborne infection.

Quality of Life and Associated Factors Among Adult Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment at Amhara National, Regional State, Ethiopia, 2021.

In cancer, quality of life (QoL) is an important patient-reported metric; evaluating how patients feel physically and emotionally while fighting the disease could lead to better treatment. Despite its therapeutic effects, chemotherapy treatment causes a plethora of side effects that can affect QoL. Factors affecting the QoL of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Ethiopia have not been thoroughly investigated. As a result, this study assesses QoL and associated characteristics among adult cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at Amhara Region, Ethiopia in 2021. From February 15 to May 15, 2021, an institutional based cross-sectional study was done in Amhara region. Three hundred fourteen patients were included in the study. The data was gathered using Amharic version of European organization for research and treatment of cancer quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ C-30) through a face-to-face interview. Epi Data 4.6 was used to enter the data, which was then exported to SPSS version 23 for statistical analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The statistical significance was determined by a p-value of less than .05. Cancer patients in Amhara Region had a 44.32 average QoL. Emotional functioning AOR 1.01 (1.0-1.04), social functioning AOR 1.02 (1.01-1.03), nausea and vomiting AOR 0.95 (0.93-0.98), pain AOR 0.95 (0.93-0.98), financial difficulty 0.97 (0.95-0.99), education AOR 4.3 (1.49-12.32), underweight AOR 0.45 (0.24-0.84), > 5th cycle of chemotherapy AOR 4 (1.78-9.11), stage IV cancer AOR 0.21 (0.06-0.71), comorbidity AOR 0.28 (0.14-0.57), anxiety AOR 0.32 (0.12-0.84), and depression AOR 0.29 (0.13-0.63) were all significantly associated with QoL in multivariable logistic regression. Adult cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in the Amhara region had a poor QoL. Emotional functioning, social functioning, nausea and vomiting, pain, financial difficulty, education, body mass index, cancer stage, chemotherapy cycle, comorbidity, anxiety, and depression all had association with QoL. To improve the QoL of cancer patients, QoL assessments, proper symptom management, nutritional support, and integration of psycho-oncology treatment should be considered.

Time to Antibiotic in Pediatric Oncology: Nursing Role in Saving Lives

Total survival of childhood cancer in LMIC is estimated to be 20% whereas survival in HIC has exceeded to more than 80%. Pediatric patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer are at risk for severe infections due to chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, fever in neutropenic oncology patients is an emergency that requires immediate evaluation and intervention. The total Time to Antibiotic (TTA) administration in pediatric oncology patients who present with fever and neutropenia is critical to improving outcomes and decreasing morbidity and mortality. Current guidelines recommend antibiotic administration within 60 minutes of the patient's arrival at the emergency department and delay can result in complications like sepsis and death. There are very strong body of evidence in the literature supporting the Nursing Lead Project in reducing TTA in pediatric oncology patients with febrile neutropenia.

Lived Experiences of Adult Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment at University of Gondar Specialized Hospital, North West Ethiopia, 2021.

Cancer is a global public health problem and it exposes patients with a wide range of physical, psychological, social, and financial problems. Experiences, feelings and thoughts patients have during the course of the disease are the determining factors of disease management. However, most of the studies analyzing cancer patients' experiences have been performed only in high-income countries and the situation for cancer patients in Ethiopia is largely unknown. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of adult cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy treatment at University of Gondar specialized Hospital, Ethiopia. A phenomenological study design was conducted among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at University of Gondar specialized Hospital. In-depth interview was conducted with 13 participants by using purposive sampling technique from March 15 to April 15, 2021. The data collection process facilitated by using semi-structured Amharic interview guide. After transcription and translation, data were analyzed by using a thematic analysis method. The ATLAS.ti software version 9 was used for coding and categorization. The result was reported using narrative and mentioned indirect quotation. The findings of the study revealed four main themes: "psychological discomfort," "functional status impairment," "experiences about chemotherapy treatment," and "coping mechanism." The findings revealed that being diagnosed with cancer is the most traumatic experience and affect all aspect of a patient life. Despite the side effects, the treatment gives hope for a new life. Social and spiritual supports have importance in coping the negative effects of living with cancer. Therefore, health care providers should provide psychosocial care to cancer patients from there diagnosis and in there treatment in dealing with this difficult process.

Nutritional Status and Its Determinants among Adult Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia.

Background Malnutrition is a common problem in cancer patients. It has an impact on all aspects of the patient's life such as increasing the risk of infection, treatment toxicity, hospital stay, and health-care costs. Factors influencing the nutritional status of adult cancer patients undertaking chemotherapy treatment in Ethiopia have not been thoroughly investigated. As a result, the purpose of this study is to assess the nutritional status and its determinants among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Objectives The objective of this study is to determine the nutritional status and its determinants among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Oncology Treatment Center, from January to May 2021. The data were gathered through a face-to-face interview and chart review method. Epi Data 4.6 was used to enter the data, which was then exported to SPSS version 25 for statistical analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between nutritional status and potential risk factors. A P value less than 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Result This study revealed that 48.1% of participants have some level of malnutrition. Lowest wealth index AOR 0.06 (0.016–0.2), food insecurity AOR 0.1 (0.05–0.24), vomiting AOR 0.2 (0.110–.444), poor appetite AOR 0.2 (0.11–0.44), no diarrhea AOR 2.6 (1.34–5.00), and poor functioning AOR 0.3 (0.2–0.54) were significantly associated with good nutritional status. Conclusion and Recommendation. The prevalence of malnutrition among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at HUCSH was high. Wealth index, food security, poor appetite, diarrhea, and performance status were significantly correlated with the nutritional status of the patients. To improve the patient's nutritional status, economic support, early nutritional screening, and assessment, management of chemotherapy-induced symptoms should be considered.

Clinical and genetic factors associated with self-reported cognitive deficits in women with breast cancer: the “CAGE-Cog” study

BackgroundBreast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment are at particular risk of experiencing acute cognitive impairment leading to daily challenges in decision-making and reduced quality of life and functional autonomy. The aim was to assess the relationship between clinical and genetic factors and cognitive function in a sample of patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out between November 2017 and June 2019 on women (N = 112) treated for breast cancer by intravenous chemotherapy at the oncology outpatient unit of Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital, Beirut. Patients were evaluated with the 37-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog). Other validated scales were also used to assess depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, pain, and fatigue. DNA was obtained by a buccal swab (FTA®technology) for genotyping of different genes (ABCB1, COMT, DRD2, OPRM1, CLOCK, CRY2, and PER2) using the Lightcycler®(Roche).ResultsThe mean age of participants was 56.04 years. Multivariable analysis, taking the four FACT-Cog subscores as the dependent variables, showed that the mean cognitive score decreased with higher depression, anxiety, and insomnia scores. Patients with university education levels had better perceived cognitive abilities than those with primary education. Moreover, carrying the G allele for the OPRM1 polymorphism (c.118A > G;rs197791) was significantly associated with a better cognitive function compared to AA patients (B = 2.05; p = 0.038).ConclusionsA comprehensive oncological care plan should include a personalized assessment of all factors related to cognitive functioning in cancer patients, particularly anxiety and depression, to achieve an optimal patient outcome.
