Reframing the experience of childbirth: Black doula communication strategies and client responses during delivery hospitalization

Doulas, or birth coaches, are said to be “changing the world, one birth at a time.” Black doulas have been suggested to mitigate against lack of representation in obstetric care, limited identity acknowledgement and accommodation, and obstetric racism. However, scientific inquiry into the specific communication strategies and messages used by Black doulas to advocate for clients was non-existent in extant literature. Guided by the Agency-Identity Model, we analyzed 20 diary-interviews of nine Black doulas who recently served Black clients. Specifically, we explored Black doulas’ communication strategies and whether these strategies had an impact on client agency. We found that Black doulas prepare their clients for patient-provider interactions, including conversations about certain medical treatments and procedures and the risks for Black women and birthing people, the importance of informed consent, how to be heard, and how to resist neglect or abuse. We found that, in turn, most Black clients were able to enact agentic responses. We describe the specific doula messages, and contextualize our findings, considering how these collective interpersonal communication strategies of Black doulas, and their clients’ agentic transformations, may index a sociopolitical movement to reframe the experience of childbirth in America.

Centering Black Women’s Voices: Illuminating Systemic Racism in Maternal Healthcare Experiences

The racial disparity in Black maternal healthcare outcomes in the U.S. reflects the devastating impact of systemic racism embedded within the healthcare system. This study addresses Black maternal health by centering Black women’s perspectives to illuminate how systemic barriers, racism, and unequal care manifest in their maternal health experiences. We conducted six focus group discussions with 27 Black women in Harris County, Texas, an area with an alarmingly high Black maternal mortality rate. The analysis revealed three main themes: (1) institutional barriers to equitable maternal care, (2) inequitable clinical care and provider–patient interactions, and (3) navigating experiences of everyday interpersonal racism. The women’s narratives provide insights into how systemic factors such as racism and unjust policies compromise the pursuit of optimal maternal care. By centering their situated knowledge, we can understand and develop solutions that emerge directly from the lived realities of this community.

Let’s (not) talk about sexual health: How sexual communication apprehension with healthcare providers and peer communication influence intentions to protect sexual health

ObjectiveThis study examined how patients’ clinical and peer interactions may affect their communication apprehension with healthcare providers, a major communication barrier to sexual health protective behaviors (SHPB). MethodsBetween January 2022 and February 2023, we conducted an online survey with 310 participants recruited through snowball sampling. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we explored relationships among patient-provider interactions, peer communication about sex, communication apprehension with providers, and SHPB intentions. ResultsSignificant predictors of SHPB intentions included lower communication apprehension and more peer communication. Communication apprehension was a significant mediator in paths from peer communication and three types of patient-provider communication to SHPB intentions. ConclusionsOur study indicates the need to address communication barriers to increase patients’ SHPB intentions. Active patient involvement and patient-centered communication may open up discussions about sex in the clinical setting. Peer interactions, informed by scientific guidance, may reduce patients’ apprehension, leading to better health outcomes. Practice implicationsCommunication interventions are needed to promote collaborative patient-provider environments and peer sexual communication. Active involvement and evidence-based discussions can help patients navigate difficult conversations (e.g., like sex), improving SHPB.

Evaluating AI's Efficacy in Enhancing Patient Education and Answering FAQs in Plastic Surgery: A Focused Case Study on Breast Reconstruction

Background: The rapid advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the healthcare sector offers new horizons for patient education and has the potential to redefine patient-provider interactions. Our research aimed to gauge the efficacy of ChatGPT-4 in delivering accurate, current, and safe medical guidance on breast reconstruction, and benchmark its responses against other established patient information channels. Methods: We presented ChatGPT-4 with six frequently posed questions about breast reconstruction. The model's replies were critically assessed by a committee of experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeons. To ensure the precision of the information, its responses were further cross-referenced against two major medical databases. Results: The results revealed that ChatGPT-4 produced well-articulated, factually sound, and holistic answers to the presented inquiries. However, the platform showed constraints in offering tailored guidance and occasionally cited outdated or irrelevant references. Notably, the system consistently advocated for professional consultation for nuanced information. Conclusion: ChatGPT-4 has emerged as a potential supplementary resource in patient education concerning breast reconstruction. Nevertheless, to harness its full potential and ensure its seamless integration into healthcare, further refinements and advancements in AI tools are paramount. The study underscores the importance of continuous evaluation and enhancement for AI solutions in the evolving landscape of patient education.

Rehabilitative Health Care Professionals' Perceptions of Appearance-Based Professionalism.

Professionalism has been discussed and defined in a variety of ways, including attire and other forms of self-expression. To determine athletic trainer (AT), physical therapist (PT), and athletic training or PT students' perceptions of appearance-based professionalism in the workplace and, secondly, to ascertain how perceptions differed across professions. Cross-sectional study. Web-based survey. Athletic trainers, PTs, and athletic training and PT students who were predominantly White, non-Hispanic, female, aged 30 ± 9 years, and recruited via listservs and social media. The independent variables were participant demographics. The dependent variables were self-reported perceptions of professionalism for each photo. The survey consisted of 3 sections: demographics, 8 photos of ATs or PTs with depictions of patient-provider interactions, and open-ended responses. For each photo, participants selected yes, no, or unsure regarding the photo. An open-ended response was prompted with a no or unsure selection. The participant further described the reason for that choice. Most participants determined the health care provider depicted in 7 photos appeared professional. Only 1 photo was deemed unprofessional by the professional majority. Significant differences existed between students and professionals for 5 photos. The proportion of participants who reported the photos were unprofessional differed among professions for 2 photos. From our qualitative analysis, we found 6 domains: (1) unprofessional attire and hair, (2) situation-dependent attire, (3) role confusion and health care employer or employee identification, (4) nonappearance related, (5) tattoo-related bias, and (6) rethinking after question is displayed. What is considered appropriate and professional is not concrete. Differing concepts of professionalism generated biased judgments and criticisms. Our findings should lead providers to reexamine the definition of professionalism. The past should not dictate the future, and today's social mores can help shape the definition as it should be considered in today's settings.

​​The Butt of the Joke​: Humour and Queer Care at an Anal Dysplasia Clinic

Based on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork I conducted at an anal cancer prevention clinic in Chicago, USA, this article considers queer camp humour as a care practice to better understand how providers and patients navigate clinical interactions centred around a stigmatised disease in a taboo body part. Humorous moments infused daily life at the clinic, and I came to see them as a critical feature of the clinic’s uniquely queer environment and a central aspect of the staff’s queer care practices. I argue the campy queer style of humour in the clinic was a vital tool for providing culturally appropriate care, and describe how humour mediated patient-provider interactions, had palliative effects, and managed dirt and bodily excess. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the importance of anthropological attention to humour and joking as forms of care.

Large Language Model-Based Evaluation of Medical Question Answering Systems: Algorithm Development and Case Study.

Healthcare systems are increasingly resource constrained, leaving less time for important patient-provider interactions. Conversational agents (CAs) could be used to support the provision of information and to answer patients' questions. However, information must be accessible to a variety of patient populations, which requires understanding questions expressed at different language levels. This study describes the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to evaluate predefined medical content in CAs across patient populations. These simulated populations are characterized by a range of health literacy. The evaluation framework includes both fully automated and semi-automated procedures to assess the performance of a CA. A case study in the domain of mammography shows that LLMs can simulate questions from different patient populations. However, the accuracy of the answers provided varies depending on the level of health literacy. Our scalable evaluation framework enables the simulation of patient populations with different health literacy levels and helps to evaluate domain specific CAs, thus promoting their integration into clinical practice. Future research aims to extend the framework to CAs without predefined content and to apply LLMs to adapt medical information to the specific (health) literacy level of the user.

A qualitative assessment of barriers and facilitators of telemedicine volunteerism during the COVID-19 pandemic in India

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic further propelled the recent growth of telemedicine in low-resource countries, with new models of telemedicine emerging, including volunteer-based telemedicine networks. By leveraging existing infrastructure and resources to allocate health personnel more efficiently, these volunteer networks eased some of the pandemic burden placed on health systems. However, there is insufficient understanding of volunteer-based telemedicine models, especially on the human resources engagement on such networks. This study aims to understand the motivations and barriers to health practitioner engagement on a volunteer telemedicine network during COVID-19, and the mechanisms that can potentially sustain volunteer engagement to address healthcare demands beyond the pandemic.MethodsIn-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with health practitioners volunteering on an Indian, multi-state telemedicine network during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis methods.ResultsMost practitioners reported being motivated to volunteer by a sense of duty to serve during the pandemic. Practitioners suggested organizational-level measures to make the process more efficient and facilitate a more rewarding provider–patient interaction. These included screening calls, gathering patient information prior to consultations, and allowing for follow-up calls with patients to close the loop on consultations. Many practitioners stated that non-financial incentives are enough to maintain volunteer engagement. However, practitioners expressed mixed feelings about financial incentives. Some stated that financial incentives are needed to maintain long-term provider engagement, while others stated that financial incentives would devalue the volunteer experience. Most practitioners highlighted that telemedicine could increase access to healthcare, especially to the rural and underserved, even after the pandemic. Practitioners also expressed an interest in continuing to volunteer with the network if the need arose again.ConclusionOur study findings suggest that practitioners are highly intrinsically motivated to volunteer during large healthcare emergencies and beyond to address the healthcare needs of the underserved. Following the recommendations presented in the study, telemedicine networks can more successfully engage and maintain volunteer practitioners. Volunteer-based telemedicine networks have the potential to bridge shortages of health personnel in resource-constrained settings both in times of crises and beyond.

Pathways linking health literacy to self-care in diabetic patients with physical disabilities: A moderated mediation model.

Health literacy is widely considered to be a determinant of self-care behavior in people with diabetes. However, the mechanisms underlying how health literacy is linked to self-care behaviors have not been clearly elucidated. The aim of the present study was to explore the mediating roles of access to healthcare, provider-patient interaction, motivation, self-efficacy in the effect of health literacy on diabetes self-care behaviors among diabetic patients with physical disabilities and investigate the moderating effect of age in a moderated mediation model. The online survey was participated by a total of 214 diabetic patients with physical disabilities from November to December 2021. The moderated mediation analysis was examined using the Hayes' PROCESS macro modeling tool based on the bias-corrected bootstrapping method. After controlling for education, the results yielded a significant indirect effect of health literacy on diabetes self-care through motivation and self-efficacy. A partially mediating relationship also was confirmed, as there is a positive direct effect of health literacy on diabetes self-care. Furthermore, age groups (i.e., age <40 and ≥ 40) functioned as a moderator of the mediating effects of motivation and self-efficacy between health literacy and diabetes self-care. This study emphasized the important role of motivation and self-efficacy which play in linking health literacy and self-care behavior, especially for younger diabetic patients with physical disabilities. In the light of these findings, a health-literacy tailored motivation and self-efficacy enhancing program may be key targets for interventions promoting diabetes self-care behaviors in people with physical disabilities.

Use of Supervision Data to Improve Quality of Care for Malaria in Pregnancy: Experience in Six African Countries.

Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) intervention coverage, especially intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), lags behind other global malaria indicators. In 2020, across Africa, only 32% of eligible pregnant women received at least three IPTp doses, despite high antenatal care attendance. We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected during Outreach Training and Supportive Supervision visits from 2019 to 2020 to assess quality of care and explore factors contributing to providers' competence in providing IPTp, insecticide-treated nets, malaria case management, and respectful maternity care. Data were collected during observations of provider-patient interactions in six countries (Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, and Niger). Competency scores (i.e., composite scores of supervisory checklist observations) were calculated across three domains: MiP prevention, MiP treatment, and respectful maternity care. Scores are used to understand drivers of competency, rather than to assess individual health worker performance. Country-specific multilinear regressions were used to assess how competency score was influenced by commodity availability, training, provider gender and cadre, job aid availability, and facility type. Average competency scores varied across countries: prevention (44-90%), treatment (78-90%), and respectful maternity care (53-93%). The relative association of each factor with competency score varied. Commodity availability, training, and access to job aids correlated positively with competency in multiple countries. To improve MiP service quality, equitable access to training opportunities for different cadres, targeted training, and access to job aids and guidelines should be available for providers. Collection and analysis of routine supervision data can support tailored actions to improve quality MiP services.

Chinese Providers' Perspectives on Early Integration of Palliative Care in Pediatric Oncology: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Internationally, early integration of palliative care in pediatric oncology has been widely recognized. However, little is known about the perspective of Chinese providers in this regard. The aim of this study was to explore the perspective of Chinese providers on the early integration of palliative care in pediatric oncology. This was a convergent mixed-methods study with a survey among 141 Chinese providers (101 nurses, 38 oncologists, and 2 social workers) and 12 individual interviews (5 oncologists, 5 nurses, and 2 social workers). Three categories existed by comparison and merging of quantitative and qualitative findings: (1) attitudes toward early integration of pediatric palliative care: 75% of the participants endorsed early integration because it would bring benefits to patients and their families-participants had concerns about misunderstandings of palliative care among other stakeholders; (2) patient-provider interactions relating to early integration: participants held contradictory views toward the impact on and influencers of early integration regarding patient-provider interactions; and (3) participants suggested a system to support early integration by addressing parents' misconceptions and providers' training, and institutional facilitation. Chinese pediatric oncology providers generally exhibit a reserved willingness toward the early integration of palliative care. They agree that palliative care would be beneficial but have concerns about providing structural support and addressing cultural influencers. Findings of this study emphasize the significance of convening stakeholders and establishing a pediatric palliative care-friendly system in a developing country, particularly by addressing structural support, resource allocation, clarified responsibilities, and capacity building.

A Social-Ecological Model Exploring Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Screening Practices Among Antenatal Health Care Providers.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse health outcomes for the pregnant individual and their baby. Screening approaches for GDM have undergone several iterations, introducing variability in practice among healthcare providers. As such, our study aimed to explore the views of antenatal providers regarding their practices of, and counseling experiences on the topic of, GDM screening in Ontario. We conducted a qualitative, grounded theory study. The study population included antenatal providers (midwives, family physicians, and obstetricians) practicing in Hamilton, Ottawa, or Sudbury, Ontario. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive coding upon which codes, categories, and themes were developed to generate a theory grounded in the data. Twenty-two participants were interviewed. Using the social-ecological theory, we created a model outlining four contextual levels that shaped the experiences of GDM counseling and screening: Intrapersonal factors included beliefs, knowledge, and skills; interpersonal factors characterized the patient-provider interactions; organizational strengths and challenges shaped collaboration and health services infrastructure; and finally, guidelines and policies were identified as systemic barriers to health care access and delivery. A focus on patient-centered care was a guiding principle for all care providers and permeated all four levels of the model. Patient-centered care and close attention to barriers and facilitators across intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, and policy domains can minimize the impact of variations in GDM screening guidelines. Among care providers, there is a desire for additional skill development related to GDM counseling, and for national consensus on optimal screening guidelines.

Associations Between Patient Comfort with a Primary Care Provider and Three Measures of Behavioral Health Services Utilization.

Behavioral health services (BHS) can help improve and treat mental and emotional health problems. Yet, attitudinal and/or structural barriers often prevent individuals from accessing and benefiting from these services. Positive provider-patient interactions in healthcare, encompassing patient comfort with a primary care provider (PCP), which is often enhanced by shared decision-making, may mitigate the stigma associated with seeing a mental health professional; this may improve BHS utilization among patients who need these services. However, few studies have examined how patient comfort with a PCP, often through shared decision-making, may influence patients' BHS utilization in the real world. This study sought to address this gap in practice. Multivariable regression analyses, using weighted data from an internet panel survey of Los Angeles County adults (n = 749), were carried out to examine the associations between patient comfort with a PCP and three measures of BHS utilization. Subsequent analyses were conducted to explore the extent to which shared decision-making moderated these associations. Participants who reported an intermediate or high comfort level with a provider had higher odds of reporting that they were likely to see (aOR = 2.10 and 3.84, respectively) and get advice (aOR = 2.75 and 4.76, respectively) from a mental health professional compared to participants who reported a low comfort level. Although shared decision-making influenced participants' likelihood of seeing and getting advice from a mental health professional, it was not a statistically significant moderator in these associations. Building stronger relationships with patients may improve BHS utilization, a provider practice that is likely underutilized.

Caregiver Perspectives on Receiving Gender-Affirming Care with Their Transgender and Gender Diverse Adolescents via Telemedicine

Telemedicine may help improve access to gender-affirming care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents. Parents or guardians (i.e., caregivers) of TGD adolescents play a critical role in supporting TGD adolescents in accessing this care. The purpose of this study was to explore caregivers’ perspectives regarding their adolescent receiving pediatric gender-affirming care via telemedicine to help providers and health systems optimize this modality for future care delivery. Caregivers (n = 18) of TGD adolescents ages 14–17 participated in semi-structured, individual interviews that were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. Caregivers cited participating in visits from their home environment, decreased anxiety, COVID safety, ability to have more family members attend, no transportation demands, and effective delivery of care as advantages of telemedicine. Disadvantages included dysphoria or discomfort with self-image, impersonal provider-patient interactions, video teleconferencing fatigue, difficulty with portal navigation, connectivity issues, and lack of privacy. Caregivers largely deferred to their child’s preference regarding the choice of visit modality, but many reported a preference for the first to be conducted in-person, and follow-up and less complex visits via telemedicine. Health systems should consider these perspectives as they adapt telemedicine infrastructure to better meet the needs of patients and their families.

Leveraging community advisory boards within travel medicine to help reduce malaria incidence in refugees, immigrants and migrants visiting friends and relatives abroad: reflections from the Minnesota Malaria Community Advisory Board on patient-provider interactions.

Refugees, immigrants and migrants often have barriers to travel medicine. Community Advisory Boards (CAB) are a vital but underutilized tool for understanding and meeting healthcare needs and challenges, providing communities with a voice, and finding solutions. The paper discusses a malaria prevention community-based participatory research project informed by a CAB.

Provider perspectives on healthcare provision via telemedicine to persons with HIV living in an urban community

ObjectivesEngaging in HIV care is key to maintaining successful health outcomes for persons with HIV (PWH). Barriers to care affect engagement and can include access to transportation. Telemedicine has been used to overcome geographical barriers in rural settings, and PWH in urban areas without public transportation can also benefit from this strategy. The aim of this research is to explore the attitudes of providers in one health system about telemedicine after receiving training. MethodsFrom 2018–2020, a convenience sample of 112 providers at University of Florida Health in Jacksonville, FL were offered telemedicine training consisting of didactic, hands-on, and in-person support. Provider attitudes were assessed in pre- and post-training surveys, focus groups, and after telemedicine visits. Descriptive statistics and paired t-tests were used to analyze pre- and post-training surveys. ResultsReadiness and willingness to conduct telemedicine with PWH after training significantly increased among providers (n = 73). Providers reported increased readiness to conduct telemedicine visits (p < 0.0001), increased ability to communicate during telemedicine visits (p < 0.001), and increased confidence in troubleshooting technology issues (p < 0.0001). Of the 29 providers completing surveys after conducting telemedicine visits with PWH, 93 % reported that it was easy to access and use. Providers did report a sense of decreased patient-provider interaction via telemedicine. ConclusionFuture research should further explore provider experiences with telemedicine training and delivery to improve telemedicine training and to identify best practices and strategies/activities that promote remote efficient patient-provider interaction. Public interest summaryThe use of telemedicine has increased in all areas of health care, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Training providers to successfully care for patients in remote settings is essential, especially as technology platforms and capabilities evolve or become more complex. Telemedicine trainings help providers increase capacity to conduct telemedicine visits. Trainings standardize visit protocols, control provider and patient expectations, identify how to incorporate remote visits into routine clinic flows, provide tools for increasing provider competency to interact with patients and use technology features, and increase understanding of types of ongoing support providers require, such as administrative. This paper describes the attitudes of providers from University of Florida Health in Jacksonville, FL receiving training to deliver telemedicine to persons with HIV residing in an urban setting.

Barriers and facilitators of lifestyle management among adult South Asian migrants living with chronic diseases: A mixed-methods systematic review

Background and aimSouth Asian migrants have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases than Caucasians. Despite much literature that has explored challenges in chronic disease management amongst the South Asian population in the past decades, their chronic disease management is still suboptimal. Understanding their determinants of disease management behaviour using the Theoretical Domains Framework will inform the development of a culturally sensitive intervention relevant to consumer-end-users. This study aimed to synthesise qualitative and quantitative studies on chronic disease management among adult South Asian immigrants. MethodsA mixed-methods systematic review was conducted using electronic databases. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool assessed the quality of the included studies. Quantitative data were transformed into qualitative data and analysed thematically. Subthemes were mapped in the Theoretical Domains Framework presenting barriers and facilitators under each theme. Results18293 studies were identified, of which 37 studies were included. The barriers and facilitators identified were categorised into four overarching themes: patient-provider interaction and relationship (e.g., complex language use by health professionals), the impact of migration (e.g., weather conditions had an impact on engagement with physical activity), heritage-based practices (e.g., an obligation to consume energy-dense food in social gatherings), and chronic disease management strategies (e.g., lack understanding of appropriate disease management strategies). ConclusionThis review provides a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of chronic disease management among South Asian migrants and insights into developing multifaceted interventions to address barriers to chronic disease management, guiding the healthcare professionals in helping overcome South Asians perceived barriers to managing chronic disease in the host countries.

Differential temporal utility of passively sensed smartphone features for depression and anxiety symptom prediction: a longitudinal cohort study

While studies show links between smartphone data and affective symptoms, we lack clarity on the temporal scale, specificity (e.g., to depression vs. anxiety), and person-specific (vs. group-level) nature of these associations. We conducted a large-scale (n = 1013) smartphone-based passive sensing study to identify within- and between-person digital markers of depression and anxiety symptoms over time. Participants (74.6% female; M age = 40.9) downloaded the LifeSense app, which facilitated continuous passive data collection (e.g., GPS, app and device use, communication) across 16 weeks. Hierarchical linear regression models tested the within- and between-person associations of 2-week windows of passively sensed data with depression (PHQ-8) or generalized anxiety (GAD-7). We used a shifting window to understand the time scale at which sensed features relate to mental health symptoms, predicting symptoms 2 weeks in the future (distal prediction), 1 week in the future (medial prediction), and 0 weeks in the future (proximal prediction). Spending more time at home relative to one’s average was an early signal of PHQ-8 severity (distal β = 0.219, p = 0.012) and continued to relate to PHQ-8 at medial (β = 0.198, p = 0.022) and proximal (β = 0.183, p = 0.045) windows. In contrast, circadian movement was proximally related to (β = −0.131, p = 0.035) but did not predict (distal β = 0.034, p = 0.577; medial β = −0.089, p = 0.138) PHQ-8. Distinct communication features (i.e., call/text or app-based messaging) related to PHQ-8 and GAD-7. Findings have implications for identifying novel treatment targets, personalizing digital mental health interventions, and enhancing traditional patient-provider interactions. Certain features (e.g., circadian movement) may represent correlates but not true prospective indicators of affective symptoms. Conversely, other features like home duration may be such early signals of intra-individual symptom change, indicating the potential utility of prophylactic intervention (e.g., behavioral activation) in response to person-specific increases in these signals.

Hormonal Contraceptive Side Effects and Nonhormonal Alternatives on TikTok: A Content Analysis.

The use of hormonal contraceptives is decreasing in the United States alongside a growing interest in nonhormonal contraceptive options. Social media messaging may be contributing to this trend. TikTok thus offers a novel opportunity to understand how people share information about risks and alternatives for pregnancy prevention. To describe the availability and content of information about hormonal contraceptive side effects and nonhormonal contraceptive options on TikTok, we conducted a content analysis of 100 videos using the hashtags #birthcontrolsideeffects and #nonhormonalcontraception. We found that these videos were popular and often framed hormonal contraceptives and patient-provider interactions negatively, with users frequently discussing discontinuation of hormonal contraception and no plans for uptake of another contraceptive. When uptake of a new contraceptive method is mentioned, creators typically mention a fertility awareness-based method, which requires specialized knowledge to use safely and effectively. The risks and side effects of hormonal options were often overemphasized compared with the possible risks and side effects of nonhormonal options. This framing may suggest opportunities for providers and health educators to reassess how they counsel about contraceptive options. We conclude with recommendations for future research on TikTok and consider the policy implications of these findings.

Patient Satisfaction with Antiretroviral Therapy Services in Hadiya Zone, Central Ethiopia Using the Donebidean Model: A Time-Motion Study.

A time-motion study is a scientific method for recording time spent on various tasks in a narrow range of specialized work settings, beginning with initial enrollment in ART provision. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the time motion of patient satisfaction with antiretroviral therapy services in Central Ethiopia. A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 422 patients from June 14 to July 30, 2021. We used a simple random sampling technique to select the participants. Structural input-related qualitative data were collected using an in-depth interview and used for concurrent triangulation with quantitative. Quantitative data were collected using a standardized and pre-tested questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 24.0. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify independent predictors of time motion and patient satisfaction. The degree of association between the outcome and independent variables was assessed by using an odds ratio with a 95% CI. The time motion of patient satisfaction study found that 53.1% (224/422) of the study participants were satisfied. As independent predictors, time spent (time motion) waiting to be seen by a health professional (AOR = 0.228, 95% CI = 0.079-0.661), patient-provider interaction (AOR = 3.72, 95% CI = 2.111-5.771), perceived privacy (AOR = 2.912, 95% CI = 1.76-2.78), sex (AOR = 2.499, 95% CI = 1.556-4.009), and income class (AOR = 0.228, 95% CI = 0.073-0.707) were associated with outcome variable. The study found low patient satisfaction with ART services, indicating the need for further improvement to enhance patient-centered services with the given time motion. Therefore, further research is needed to assess the intensity and reach of the information through an analysis of pre- and post-intervention that provides a complete picture of conceptualizations of time motion studies.
