Knowledge Sources, Novelty, and Generality: Do Standard-Essential Patents Differ From Nonstandard-Essential Ones?

This article comprehensively investigates the differences between standard-essential patents (SEPs) and nonstandard-essential patents (N-SEPs) in terms of knowledge sources, novelty, and generality and investigates the impact of knowledge sources on novelty and generality. Specifically, we take a sample of declared SEPs related to long-term evolution standards and their corresponding N-SEPs from 2006 to 2015. To explore the differences between SEPs and N-SEPs in terms of knowledge sources, we used patent bibliometric analysis and text analysis methods to mine the technological domain, scientific literature, and standard literature involved in the backward citations of patents. Then, three indicators are established: 1) technological diversity, 2) science linkage, and 3) standard linkage. Standard linkage has rarely been discussed in the literature. We used text analysis to construct two indicators, the novelty and generality indices, which depict the differences in novelty and generality between SEPs and N-SEPs by comparing the text similarity of focal patents to prior and subsequent patents. The impact of different knowledge sources on SEPs and N-SEPs was verified through empirical analysis. This article innovatively found that SEPs are less technologically diverse and scientifically related, whereas their standard linkage is higher than that of N-SEPs. SEPs are more generic and less novel than N-SEPs. In addition, different knowledge sources have distinct effects on the novelty and generality of SEPs and N-SEPs. These findings can provide a reference for firms’ knowledge acquisition, resource allocation, and selection of R&D partners in the patent creation process.

Grid-connected lithium-ion battery energy storage system towards sustainable energy: A patent landscape analysis and technology updates

Presently, as the world advances rapidly towards achieving net-zero emissions, lithium-ion battery (LIB) energy storage systems (ESS) have emerged as a critical component in the transition away from fossil fuel-based energy generation, offering immense potential in achieving a sustainable environment. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of grid-connected LIB ESS patents published from 1998 to 2022, aiming to comprehend essential developments and trends in the technology landscape while identifying key players and inventors. Employing extensive keyword searches within the Lens database, 95 patent documents were extracted along with the bibliometric data. The research highlights two prominent factors in the field of grid-connected LIB ESS patents. Firstly, a detailed patent bibliometric analysis including patent growth trends, keyword analysis, patent distribution over jurisdiction, and subject categories was presented. Moreover, the research identifies key owners, inventors and hierarchical jurisdiction in patent document publishing and evaluates the possibilities for future research sustainability. Secondly, detailed updates regarding technological advancements that are driving sustainable grid-connected LIB ESS development in various sectors such as; gird connected ESS, power conversion system (PCS), energy management system (EMS) and transportation sector are provided. The study concluded that the patents related to grid-connected ESS, minimizing voltage and frequency regulation to achieve grid stability and EMS of LIB are the key trending topics in the field of grid-connected LIB ESS. The comprehensive analysis not only illuminates crucial trends but also provides valuable guidance to future researchers and industry stakeholders, facilitating the path towards sustainable grid-connected LIB ESS and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious energy landscape.

A Patent Bibliometric Analysis of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Technology

Large amounts of CO2 from human socioeconomic activities threaten environmental sustainability. Moreover, uncontrolled resource use and lack of relevant technology exacerbate this issue. For this reason, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology has gained worldwide attention. Many scholars have researched CCUS, but few have used CCUS patent bibliometric analysis from a unified perspective. This article aims to provide a conclusive analysis for CCUS researchers and policymakers, as well as summarize the innovation trends, technological distribution, and topic evolution. Based on 11,915 pieces of patent data from the Derwent Innovations Index, we used bibliometric analysis and data mining methods to conduct research on four dimensions: overall trend, geographical distribution, patentees, and patent content. The results of this article are as follows. CCUS has entered a rapid development stage since 2013. Patents are mainly distributed geographically in China, the US, and Japan, especially in heavy industries such as energy and electricity. Large enterprises hold patents with a relatively stable network of cooperators and attach great importance to international patent protection. A total of 12 topics were identified through clustering, and these topics gradually shifted from technicalities to commercialization, and from industrial production to all aspects of people’s daily lives.

Patent bibliometric analysis for global trend of organoid technologies in the past decade

SummaryOrganoids are considered a game-changing paradigm of research models for human physiology and disease, which provides unsurpassed opportunities across disciplines in basic medical research, drug development, and personalized medicine. Here, we made a deep investigation for global patents of organoid technologies in the past decade using bibliometric analysis for the first time. We have identified a total of 672 patents related to organoid technology. The number of annual patent applications exhibits an overall upward growth trend over the past decade, especially entering an exponential growth since 2015. Notably, 76.64% of patents are related to the construction of organoid models. Liver, brain, and intestinal models take up the first three places in the physiological models, while tumor models account for 76.30% of the total patents for disease models. Furthermore, drug screening is the most preferred application, revealing the great commercial value of organoid technologies in precision medicine and preclinical drug screening.

International Technologies on Prevention and Treatment of Neurological and Psychiatric Diseases: Bibliometric Analysis of Patents.

BackgroundNeurological and psychiatric disorders are serious and expensive global public health problems. Therefore, exploring effective intervention technologies plays an important role in improving patients’ clinical symptoms and social functions, as well as reducing medical burden.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to analyze and summarize the key new technologies and innovative development trends witnessed globally for neurological illness and psychiatric disorders by mining the relevant patent data.MethodsA bibliometric analysis was conducted on patent applications, priority countries, main patentees, hot technologies, and other patent information on neurological and psychiatric disorders, revealing the current situation along with the trend of technology development in this field.ResultsIn recent years, inventions and innovations related to neurological and psychiatric diseases have become very active, with China being the largest patent priority country. Of the top patent holders, Visicu (headquartered in the United States) is the leader. The distribution of patent holders in China remains relatively scattered, with no monopoly organization at present. Global technologies on neurological illness and psychiatric disorders are mainly concentrated around A61B (diagnosis, surgery, and identification).ConclusionsThis paper analyzed and summarized the key new technologies and global innovative development trends of neurological and psychiatric diseases by mining the relevant patent data, and provides practical references and research perspectives for the prevention and treatment of the aforesaid diseases.

Investigating the evolution of pyrolysis technologies through bibliometric analysis of patents and papers

This paper analyses over 89,000 documents between scientific journals and international patents in order to identify main technologies for material pyrolysis (i.e. fluidized bed, hot balls, microwave, plasma, and laser), compare them in terms of technical performances and discover future trends.The predictive model for future trends is based on the evolutionary model of the TRIZ theory, with particular attention to the evolutionary law, “from macro to micro”, which explains how technical systems evolve towards increasingly smaller, controlled, and resource-efficient interactions. In our case, we applied the focus to the interface between the heat source and the pyrolyzed raw material.The proposed evolutionary model showed a substantial alignment with chronological trends, and the model was consistent with both patent trends and those of the scientific literature.To make the analysis quantitatively more robust, a comparison of the different technologies has also been introduced in terms of percentage distribution and the number of patents/papers referring to the different classes of heating rates and reaction temperatures and types of flash/fast/intermediate/slow reaction. Finally, a quantitative metric based on the innovation index has been adopted, to take into account the number of citations normalized on the years of publication.The main outputs of this study identified that radiations-based pyrolysis, involving microscopic interaction, seem more interesting in term of technical performances (i.e. heating rate and reaction temperature), although their technological growth has yet to occur, unlike fluidized bed and hot balls, which typically work at a macroscopic level and seem to have already reached maturity. According to a bibliometric index, laser corpus resulted three time more innovative then fluidized bed reactors papers, especially for heating rates and reactions temperature.

Technology advances in sugarcane propagation: A patent citation study

Sugarcane propagation technologies have, in recent years, been the focus of interest of large corporations involved in the sugar and ethanol business. The objective of this study is to present the methodology used to identify the technology domain found in different sugarcane propagation technologies. The methodology was based on the bibliometric analysis of patents, including a meticulous selection of the most representative technologies used by the sugarcane market and the application of patent citation. The results report the process developed to identify a novel technology domain of high complexity involving different fields of science resulting in a set of sugar cane propagation technologies and show that the main technology advances have happened in the last decade (2005–2015), especially in seedling containers and the use of chemical compounds for seedling treatment. Further studies are recommended to help understand how these new technologies will impact the sugarcane production-chain in Brazil.

A metodologia criativa TRIZ analisada por meio de um estudo em patentes

Este artigo aborda a criatividade como metodologia, especificamente a Teoria da Solução Inventiva de Problemas (TRIZ). Nesta pesquisa exploratória suportada por uma análise de patentes, realizamos análises quantitativas e qualitativas sobre essas patentes objetivando identificar como a TRIZ é utilizada na inovação tecnológica e especificamente a existência de contribuições inovadoras à TRIZ. Analisamos 57 documentos de patentes disponíveis na base Espacenet e, depois de separados, filtrados e normalizados, restaram 27 documentos. Estes foram resumidos e agrupados em categorias e analisados do ponto de vista de país de origem, palavras mais utilizadas, por ano de depósito e applicant. Após análise dos resultados, identificamos a TRIZ como uma importante metodologia de suporte ao processo inventivo e verificamos o esforço de interação da TRIZ com outras metodologias de apoio à criatividade. Também encontramos atualizações na TRIZ referentes ao uso da base de patentes, clusterização de princípios inventivos e soluções de matriz nula.

Technology resources distribution characteristics of 3D printing: based on patent bibliometric analysis

3D printing is an emerging technology which has been recognised not only by scientists and technology developers but also by policy-makers. However, little research has examined this promising research field using the patent bibliometric method. Thus, in this study, technology classification system for 3D printing technology is designed and the global 3D printing development characteristics are presented. Then, we use the bibliometric analysis method to rank countries, institutions, inventors and technology subfields. The results show that the global trend of 3D printing is diversified development characteristics, but technical resources distribution is not balanced. Although the 3D bioprinting is a relatively young field, it already demonstrates huge development space. With the intensification of global competition, all nations especially China should seek to enhance capability and regard effectiveness of technological innovation.

Technology exploration and forecasting of biofuels and biohydrogen energy from patent analysis

The status and activity of technological development in the field of biofuel and biohydrogen energy from the year 2000–2011 were investigated utilizing patent bibliometric analysis. Based on the reports, the current status indicates that the key technologies for biofuel energy have reached technological maturity in the United States. However, the principal or predominant technologies for biohydrogen energy need a great deal of work to accelerate the development of biohydrogen technology. In addition, three important subjects were found from citation techniques, which are related to biodiesel fuel, biological fuel cell, and the biohydrogen. These patents described that the focus of key techniques of energy production should be established towards low energy demand technologies, and biohydrogen was found to be a potential candidate of the future. Finally, this proposed model can be applied to all high-technology cases, and particularly to green energy field.

Tracking R&D behavior: bibliometric analysis of drug patents in the Orange Book

The Publication Approved Drug Products with Therapeutic Equivalence Evaluations (commonly known as the Orange Book) identifies drug products approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for safety and effectiveness, and provides substantial information on new drug applications (NDAs) with patent data. To explore the patterns among drug patents in the Orange Book, this study used patent bibliometric analysis. The productivity and impact are presented at the assignee level and applicant level, respectively, and the applicant's patent portfolio is further discussed. 2,033 drug patents are identified in this current study. Our findings indicate that the applicant's patent portfolio in the Orange Book is helpful in revealing the technological capability and patent strategy of the pharmaceutical incumbents. By linking drug data and patent information, this current study sheds light on patent research in the pharmaceutical industry.

Using patent analyses to monitor the technological trends in an emerging field of technology: a case of carbon nanotube field emission display

Carbon nanotube field emission display (CNT-FED) represents both emerging application of nanotechnology and revolutionary invention of display. Therefore, it is an important subject to monitor the states and trends of CNT-FED technology before the next stage of development. The present paper uses patent bibliometric analysis and patent network analysis to monitor the technological trends in the field of CNT-FED. These results firstly reveal the different aspects of patenting activities in the field of CNT-FED. Then, patent network analysis indicates the developing tendency of worldwide FED production based on the synthesis of CNT materials. Furthermore, key technologies of three clusters can be identified as the depositing CNT on substrate, coating phosphor on screen and assembling process for whole device. Finally, emitter material is taken for the key factor in R&D work to improve the efficacy in CNT-FED technology.

Carbon nanotubes: bibliometric analysis of patents

Patents are rich sources of technical and commercial information. Bibliometric analysis of patents provides information on the nature and growth of the inventive activity; its international comparison; the active players from industry, academia and government; co-inventorship; linkages with science; and technological trends. The present paper highlights the results of such a study in the area of carbon nanotubes. The analysis indicates that first patents were filed immediately after the discovery of the carbon nanotubes. The researchers at Nippon Electric Company (NEC) have been most active in the field. There is considerable thrust on patenting in the area of synthesis or processes for production of the carbon nanotubes. The technological trends indicate the possibilities of applications in the areas of nano test tubes, nanoelectronics, and polymer and composite materials.
