A Dijkstra Based Algorithm for Optimal Splitter Location in Passive Optical Local Area Network (POLAN)

Passive Optical Local Area Networks (POLANs) are integral to modern broadband communication systems, offering high bandwidth and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Designing an efficient POLAN requires careful consideration of splitter placement to minimize network costs. This paper presents an algorithmic approach using Dijkstra's algorithm and the Google Maps API to optimize splitter locations in a POLAN. By treating Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) as nodes in a graph and calculating walking distances between them, the algorithm identifies potential splitter locations that minimize fiber length. Using the Dijkstra's algorithm, the total fiber length used to connect every optical network unit is approximately 274km. Finally, a simulation of the full PON network was carried out and the BER and Q-Factor for each ONU was gotten. An average BER value of 1.8e-11 and Q-Factor value of 13.3 was gotten.

Load adaptive multi-threshold scheduling to concurrently improvise transmission time and wait time performance of C-RAN

Low-latency requirements of 5G networks are one of the fundamental needs to support delay-sensitive applications. Uplink scheduling mechanism at wired midhaul of Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture significantly affects the transmission speed and delay performance of the network. Inadequate performance of conventional scheduling algorithms necessitates improvements to attain these requirements. In this paper, load adaptive scheduling with single threshold (LAS-ST) and load adaptive scheduling with multi-threshold (LAS-MT) algorithms on C-RAN architecture are proposed to reduce transmission time and wait time parameters concurrently. The proposed algorithms have been compared with two conventional scheduling algorithms, multi-scheduling domain (MSD) & single scheduling domain (SSD) and applied at fronthaul and midhaul of C-RAN for its comprehensive analysis. MSD and SSD are widely used in Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) architectures. The results confirm that the proposed multi-threshold scheduling algorithm performs best in meeting the objectives of the studycompared to the existing scheduling algorithms in terms of transmission time and wait time by adapting to conditions. Further, resource utilization and resource availability are observed for several transmission cycles (TCs). In addition, data load variation and variation in number of available resources is analysed and its effect on transmission time and wait time is studied.

100 Gb/s/λ polarization multiplexing PON downlink based on simplified heterodyne coherent reception

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a 100Gb/s/λ downstream transmission link for coherent passive optical networks (PONs) up to 50 km, achieving an optical power budget of 29 dB through polarization multiplexing (PolMux) of two 50 Gb/s channels using multiband carrierless amplitude phase modulation (multiCAP) and optical single side band (OSSB) modulation. Additionally, we introduce a separate PolMux 50 Gb/s link that presents an optical power budget of 38.7 dB. Both links have been achieved using a simplified polarization-demultiplexing heterodyne coherent receiver. The robustness of the system is experimentally evaluated by analyzing its response to various input states of polarization. The transmission has been accomplished using 10 GHz electrical bandwidth devices at both the transmission and receiving ends, thereby paving the way for low-cost 100G links suitable for applications such as PONs.

Demonstration of 640 Gbps/160 Gbps WDM-PON system based on colorless ONUs

Abstract The Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) is considered a highly promising option for next-generation optical access networks. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a WDM-PON network architecture using colorless Optical Network Units (ONUs). Our design employs a single broadband source (comb source) to generate the optical carriers required for bidirectional transmission. We demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a WDM-PON over a 30 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28), with downstream transmission at 640 Gbps and upstream at 160 Gbps. The proposed method involves comparing two WDM-PON networks with 16 channels, which have similar characteristics. In the first system, we use 32 carriers – 16 for downstream and 16 for upstream – while in the second system, only 16 carriers are used for both directions. In addition, this configuration allows us to easily double the total bandwidth of the network by increasing the number of ONUs to 32 and incorporating the unused carriers (the 16 other unused carriers from the second configuration).

Capacity Optimization of the Next-Generation Passive Optical Networks Based on Genetic Algorithm

This paper proposes an analytical and a numerical models for Next Generation Passive Optical Network (NGPON) by combining Gigabit-PON (GPON) and 10 Gigabit asymmetrical PON (XGPON) technologies. This allows for a larger number of subscribers to be accommodated on the network, up to 256. A capacity optimization procedure based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) techniques is then proposed and analyzed. The uplink and downlink capacities are maximized by optimizing various link parameters, such as the number of Optical Network Units (ONUs), the average optical transmitter power, the receiver sensitivity and the network operating margins. Simulation results shown that, among others, the Distributed-feedback laser (DBF) average power, the Positive-Intrinsic-Negative (PIN) sensitivity and the network margin are the key parameters entrusted to the GA technique in order to maximize the downlink capacity. In contrast, the Fabry Perot (FP) average power, the Avalanche Photodiode (APD) sensitivity and network margin are found to be the most influential parameters optimized by GA to maximize uplink capacity. Significantly, it is demonstrated that the GA technique, when used in optimizing NGPON capacity, enabling 256 subscribers and offering a data rates up to 71.02 Gb/s and 390.56 Gb/s in the upstream and downstream directions, respectively.

Security improvement for TWDM-PON utilizing blowfish cryptography

Security issues with optical access networks (OANs) are increasing as the number of users has dramatically grown. To address this problem, a full-system division multiplexing in both the time and wavelength domains has been utilized in a passive optical network second-generation (TWDM-NG-PON2) system. A secure approach to transfer data was presented by implementing the blowfish algorithm for image encryption and decryption in the OAN. Simulation results indicate effective realization of a bidirectional fiber link at 40 km with a splitting ratio of 1:256. The minimum accepted receiver sensitivity is −30.9dBm for uplink and −33.9dBm for downlink, and a symmetric high capacity of 160 Gbps rate has been obtained. The proposed algorithm in TWDM-PON offers high security with large bandwidth and an advanced long-haul network that provides effective resource usage and reinforced network authenticity.

Performance evaluation of Hard-Isolated GPONs using regular perturbation methods

Abstract In this study, we conduct a detailed performance evaluation of hard-isolated Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPONs) using Regular Perturbation (RP) methods. The Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE) is utilized to model signal propagation in optical fibers, capturing the effects of nonlinearities and dispersion. By applying RP techniques, we derive approximate solutions to the NLSE, offering a more manageable approach for performance analysis in highly nonlinear regimes. Key performance metrics such as Normalized Squared Deviation (NSD), Bit-Error Rate (BER), and Achievable Information Rates (AIR) are analyzed to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the RP models. Simulation results demonstrate that the RP method provides good accuracy in modeling nonlinear effects, particularly at lower input power levels. Additionally, the study investigates the impact of hard isolation on mitigating nonlinearities, showing significant benefits in maintaining signal integrity and reducing BER. The findings highlight the potential of RP methods as robust tools for performance evaluation and optimization in advanced optical communication systems.

Low-complexity end-to-end deep learning framework for 100G-PON

End-to-end learning allows communication systems to achieve optimal performance compared with conventional blockwise structure design. By modeling the channel with neural networks and training the transmitter and receiver on this differentiable channel, the whole system can be jointly optimized. However, in existing schemes, channel modeling methods, such as the generative adversarial network and long short-term memory network, have complex architectures and cannot track channel changes, leading to less effective end-to-end learning. Meanwhile, the complexity of neural networks deployed at the transmitter and receiver is too high for practical applications. In this work, we propose an efficient and low-complexity end-to-end deep learning framework and experimentally validate it on a 100G passive optical network. It uses a noise adaptation network to model channel response and noise distribution and employs offline pretraining and online tracking training to improve the efficiency and accuracy of channel modeling. For the transmitter, it consists of a pattern-dependent look-up table (PDLUT) based on a neural network (NN-PDLUT) with a single convolutional layer. Further, the receiver is also an NN with a single convolutional layer; thus, the end-to-end signal processing is extremely simple. The experimental results show that end-to-end learning improves the receiver sensitivity by 0.85 and 1.59 dB compared with receiver-only equalization based on Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNLE) and joint equalization based on a PDLUT and a feed-forward equalizer, respectively. Moreover, the number of multiply–accumulate operations consumed by the transmitter and receiver in the end-to-end learning scheme is reduced by 75.7% compared with VNLE-based receiver-only equalization.

A bandwidth allocation scheme based on GRU traffic prediction in passive optical networks

With the advancement of information technology, network slicing technology has emerged as a viable solution for ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) in optical access networks. Current research is increasingly focusing on the integration of optical access networks with network slicing technologies. This paper proposes a bandwidth allocation scheme based on traffic prediction, specifically designed for resource management in optical network slicing scenarios. The scheme employs a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network model to forecast future traffic, and combines bandwidth and latency factors to allocate bandwidth to each slice based on predicted values, thereby meeting the QoS requirements of various services. Simulation results indicate that, compared to the baseline algorithm, the proposed scheme achieved a 35.42% increase in Explaining Variance Score (EVS) and a 38.16% improvement in R2 score for factory slicing prediction. Similarly, for data center slicing prediction, the EVS score increased by 32.29% and the R2 score improved by 41.96%. In terms of performance metrics such as latency, packet loss rate, and throughput, the proposed algorithm outperforms both traditional prediction algorithms and the baseline algorithm.

Continuous-variable quantum passive optical network

To establish a scalable and secure quantum network, a critical milestone is advancing from basic point-to-point quantum key distribution (QKD) systems to the development of inherently multi-user protocols designed to maximize network capacity. Here, we propose a quantum passive optical network (QPON) protocol based on continuous-variable (CV) systems, particularly the quadrature of the coherent state, which enables deterministic, simultaneous, and high-rate secret key generation among all network users. We implement two protocols with different trust levels assigned to the network users and experimentally demonstrate key generation in a quantum access network with 8 users, each with an 11 km span of access link. Depending on the trust assumptions about the users, we reach 1.5 and 2.1 Mbits/s of total network key generation (or 0.4 and 1.0 Mbits/s with finite-size channels estimation). Demonstrating the potential to expand the network’s capacity to accommodate tens of users at a high rate, our CV-QPON protocols open up new possibilities in establishing low-cost, high-rate, and scalable secure quantum access networks serving as a stepping stone towards a quantum internet.

Investigation of laser phase noise tolerance in simplified coherent PON with subcarrier multiplexing.

In this paper, we experimentally investigate the laser phase noise tolerance for a 100 Gb/s/λ coherent passive optical network (PON) with simplified optical network units (ONUs) transceivers when distributed feedback (DFB) laser is used as the local oscillator (LO). In the proposed scheme, the digitally subcarrier-multiplexed (DSCM) signals are generated in the coherent transmitter at the optical line terminal (OLT) side based on Alamouti encoding in two polarizations and received by a single-polarization heterodyne receiver at the ONU side. The experimental results show that the power budget can achieve 34.2 dB and 33.9 dB after a 25 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link when external cavity laser (ECL) and DFB lasers are used as the LOs at the ONU side. Polarization and carrier phase tracking schemes for the DSCM systems based on frequency domain pilot tones were used in digital signal process (DSP). At the same time, the frequency offset estimation and phase noise compensation algorithms are conducted using residual carriers. By choosing an appropriate width for the low-pass filter, the optimal performance for the phase noise compensation can be achieved. The pre-equalization operation at the OLT side is also verified for the subcarrier-multiplexed signals to provide better and flatter performances.

Coherent reception, along with time- and wavelength-division multiplexing (TWDM), is a promising concept to simultaneously support multiple services in future high-speed point-to-multipoint passive optical networks (PONs). The next-generation PON 2 (NG-PON2) standard describes a TWDM-PON based on IM/DD intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) which employs tunable-lasers and optical filters such as tunable optical filters or cyclic arrayed-waveguide gratings. Here, we investigate what we believe to be a novel coherent TWDM-PON architecture based on a frequency comb source in the optical line terminal (OLT), and thermally-tuned distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers in the optical network units (ONUs). For downstream operation, we broadcast multiple copies of two 25 GBd dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) signals, resulting in a total PON downstream capacity of 200 Gbit/s. The copies of the downstream signals are spanning ±2 nm (±250 GHz). In the ONUs, we align the wavelengths of the DFB lasers, which act as local oscillators (LOs), to one of the downstream signals by a thermal heater or by changing the direct current. In upstream, the already aligned DFB lasers act as transmit lasers and the frequency comb as LO. We demonstrate TWDM upstream by emulating two ONUs with 25 GBd DP-QPSK, resulting in a total PON upstream capacity of 200 Gbit/s.

SkipNet: an adaptive neural network equalization algorithm for future passive optical networking

In this paper, we propose an original adaptive neural network equalizer (NNE) algorithm named SkipNet, which is suitable for rapid training on a packet-by-packet basis for burst-mode non-linear equalization in upstream PON transmission. SkipNet uses the simple LMS algorithm and avoids complex neural network training algorithms such as backpropagation and mini-batch training. We demonstrate SkipNet on captured continuous mode 100 Gbit/s PAM4 signals using an SOA preamplifier to achieve the challenging 29 dB PON optical loss budget. The adaptive SkipNet equalizer is shown to overcome combinations of severe SOA patterning effects and fiber dispersion impairments to achieve >29dB dynamic range back-to-back and >22.9dB dynamic range for up to 81.6 ps/nm accumulated dispersion. It can adapt in as little as 250 training symbols to each impairment scenario, which is equivalent to existing FFE/DFE solutions, while matching the non-linear performance of previously proposed static NNE solutions. To the best of our knowledge, SkipNet is the first ever adaptive NNE framework that can realistically be trained and adapted on a packet-by-packet basis and within strict PON packet preamble lengths.

Burst-mode digital signal processing for passive optical networks based on discrete multi-tone.

Driven by the ever-increasing capacity demands, digital signal processing (DSP) has been first applied to improve the performance of a 50G passive optical network (PON). The main challenge is implementing the burst-mode DSP to deal with the upstream burst signal. This paper proposes a burst-mode DSP using preambles designed for the 50G PON based on entropy-loading discrete multi-tone (DMT). The burst-mode DSP mainly includes the burst-mode timing recovery with the initial timing offset and the burst-mode frequency-domain equalizer with the initial tap coefficients. The experimental results of the 50G DMT PON demonstrate that the burst-mode DSP can achieve fast convergence based on the ∼27ns preamble with 800 samples. The proposed burst-mode DSP makes the DMT PON highly feasible to support non-residential point-to-multi-point applications such as passive optical local area networks.

Dedicated Path Protection with Flexible Switching Selection in Passive Optical 5G Xhaul Access Networks

This work addresses the optimized planning of survivable optical 5G Xhaul access networks employing passive Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technologies. Specifically, it focuses on the reliability of optical transmission paths connecting remote radio sites to a central hub ensured by using a novel, cost-effective, flexible, and dedicated path protection (DPP-F) scheme, protecting against single-link failures. The proposed DPP-F network protection approach allows for switching of individual wavelengths or the complete multiplexed WDM signal, flexibly applying the best switching option according to given traffic demands. Concurrently, it enables traffic aggregation on the transmission paths from the end and intermediate nodes to minimize the overall network deployment cost. The problem of selecting primary (working) and backup (protection) paths, together with the selection of the best switching and traffic aggregation options, is modeled and solved as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimization problem. To evaluate the cost savings achieved with DPP-F, we compare it with two reference DPP schemes based on switching the entire multiplexed WDM signal (DPP-M) and individual wavelengths (DPP-W). Numerical experiments conducted across a wide range of network scenarios reveal, among other things, that DPP-F’s performance is at least as good as that of the reference methods, bringing significant cost savings (from several to tens of percent) in most of the analyzed network scenarios.

Energy evaluation for a dynamic and reconfigurable TWDM‐PON on a novel network traffic adaptable pattern

SummaryEven with existing methodologies, dynamic resource allocation, service inconsistency, operational costs, and excess energy/power consumption in optical access networks remain the key challenges for the next‐generation passive optical network (NG‐PON) design and development. This paper introduces a novel method for analyzing energy/power consumption in time and wavelength division multiplexed (TWDM) passive optical networks (PONs) with a ring‐based topology. We propose subscriber‐based channel allocation models (CAMs) for on‐demand services, allocate bandwidth dynamically, and evaluate their downstream power consumption. To determine the necessary optical devices for the various CAMs, we investigate subscriber take‐up rates by optimizing the utilization of optical components based on active subscribers. Implementing a novel Poisson distribution‐based network traffic model addresses energy‐related concerns and explores optimization techniques to minimize power and improve energy efficiency. With a take‐up rate of 64 active subscribers, simulation results show significant power consumption reductions ranging from 62.2 to 67.7%, achieved by the proposed subscriber‐based architecture models with varying subscriber counts, when compared with the conventional model. The model with the most subscribers (2048 subscribers) saves the most energy by reducing power consumption to 292 W from the conventional model's (2048 subscribers) 440 W. Furthermore, the model with the most subscribers saves 33.4% of energy, outperforming other subscriber‐based architecture models without affecting QoS even during peak hours of the day. These numerical results show that TWDM‐PONs with the most subscribers exhibit improved energy efficiency than the conventional and other proposed subscriber‐based architecture models.
