Concentration, composition and exposure risk assessment of particulate matter with different particle sizes in subway stations

Particle composition and risk assessment of their exposure in a subway station are very important for a station's environment and the health of people. However, only a handful of papers have compared and analyzed the composition of particulate matter and the risk of their exposure to people. To address these issues, environmental parameters and particulate matter were measured for one month at six different locations in twelve subway stations in a capital city located on the central coast of China. The particulate matter (PM), its composition and characteristics were analyzed and compared. The daily average exposure risk assessment model for the studied city was proposed to analyze the exposure risks associated with various particulate matters and metals for both commuters and workers. The results showed that, in all public areas (station hall, platform and carriage), the concentrations of PM were higher than those outside the subway station. The highest values of PM2.5, PM10, and TSP (total suspended particulates) were determined to be 158.3 μg/m3, 168.0 μg/m3, and 170.7 μg/m3, respectively. The physical characteristics showed that the surface of particles inside the station was rougher, larger and darker in color. Compared to outdoors, the particles within the subway stations contained much more metals, particularly Fe that had the mass fraction of 9.59 %. On the other hand, the outdoor environment did not contain any Fe. These findings indicated that there were original sources of contamination at subway stations, and the hazardous nature of the particles was particularly pronounced within subway stations. The exposure risk of TSP and metals for workers was nearly twice that of passengers. This study aims to provide data that could help in controlling the environment at subway stations.

Characterizing leaf-deposited particles: Single-particle mass spectral analysis and comparison with naturally fallen particles

The size and composition of particulate matter (PM) are pivotal in determining its adverse health effects. It is important to understand PM’s retention by plants to facilitate its atmospheric removal. However, the distinctions between the size and composition of naturally fallen PM (NFPM) and leaf-deposited PM (LDPM) are not well-documented. Here we utilize a single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer, coupled with a PM resuspension chamber, to analyze these differences. We find that LDPM particles are 6.8–97.3% larger than NFPM. Employing a neural network algorithm based on adaptive resonance theory, we have identified distinct compositional profiles: NFPM predominantly consists of organic carbon (OC; 31.2%) and potassium-rich components (19.1%), whereas LDPM are largely composed of crustal species (53.9–60.6%). Interestingly, coniferous species retain higher OC content (11.5–13.7%) compared to broad-leaved species (0.5–1.2%), while the levoglucosan content exhibit an opposite trend. Our study highlights the active role of tree leaves in modifying PM composition beyond mere passive capture, advocating for a strategic approach to species selection in urban greening initiatives to enhance PM mitigation. These insights provide guidance for urban planners and environmentalists in implementing nature-based solutions to improve urban air quality.

His dark materials: Quantifying the problem of dust (particulate matter) in the agricultural landscape of California

The composition and amounts of dust or particulate matter (PM) vary greatly in the atmosphere and particulates can have major adverse impacts on human health. Since PM10 deposition to foliage can improve air quality, there have been a number of studies of PM10 amounts on the surface of urban vegetation. Much less is known about PM in agricultural areas, although PM10 can be harmful to vegetation and, for food crops, have the potential to be ingested. Here we have quantified PM across the agricultural landscape of California, measuring the amounts present on the foliage of 18 crops at 21 locations. The amounts of particulates present varied (0.17–6.9 gm-2) and PM loads on leaves in the south and east of the area were higher than those in the northern and westerly locations. Our findings suggest that the amounts of particulates on the surface of agricultural crops can be high; exceeding the usual range of values for urban areas. Our data indicate that agricultural crops grown in regions like California and the Mediterranean where summer rainfall is largely absent and drip rather than spray irrigation is used are more vulnerable to PM accumulation and to any adverse effects resulting from these deposits. Microscopic analysis of PM10 on foliage showed that in these agricultural areas wind-blown soil particles make up 74.2% of the PM10 present; this is thus a very significant source. A small number of microplastic particles (2.2%) were also identified on foliage. We suggest that PM and microplastics could impact food and forage quality and that more work is needed to examine PM deposition to crops and their range of impacts.

The influence of long-range transported Saharan dust on the inflammatory potency of ambient PM2.5 and PM10

Although desert dust promotes morbidity and mortality, it is exempt from regulations. Its health effects have been related to its inflammatory properties, which can vary between source regions. It remains unclear which constituents cause this variability. Moreover, whether long-range transported desert dust potentiates the hazardousness of local particulate matter (PM) is still unresolved. We aimed to assess the influence of long-range transported desert dust on the inflammatory potency of PM2.5 and PM10 collected in Cape Verde and to examine associated constituents.During a reference period and two Saharan dust events, 63 PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected at four sampling stations. The content of water-soluble ions, elements, and organic and elemental carbon was measured in all samples and endotoxins in PM10 samples. The PM-induced release of inflammatory cytokines from differentiated THP-1 macrophages was evaluated. The association of interleukin (IL)-1β release with PM composition was assessed using principal component (PC) regressions.PM2.5 from both dust events and PM10 from one event caused higher IL-1β release than PM from the reference period. PC regressions indicated an inverse relation of IL-1β release with sea spray ions in both size fractions and organic and elemental carbon in PM2.5. The PC with the higher regression coefficient suggested that iron and manganese may contribute to PM2.5-induced IL-1β release. Only during the reference period, endotoxin content strongly differed between sampling stations and correlated with inflammatory potency.Our results demonstrate that long-range transported desert dust amplifies the hazardousness of local air pollution and suggest that, in PM2.5, iron and manganese may be important. Our data indicate that endotoxins are contained in local and long-range transported PM10 but only explain the variability in inflammatory potency of local PM10. The increasing inflammatory potency of respirable and inhalable PM from desert dust events warrants regulatory measures and risk mitigation strategies.

Risk of heavy metal(loid) compositions in fine particulate matter on acute cardiovascular mortality: a poisson analysis in Anyang, China.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Associations between PM2.5 compositions and cardiovascular disease are a point of special interest but inconsistent. This study aimed to explore the cardiovascular effects of heavy metal(loid) compositions in PM2.5. Data for mortality, air pollutants and meteorological factors in Anyang, China from 2017 to 2021 were collected. Heavy metal(loid) in PM2.5 were monitored and examined monthly. A Case-crossover design was applied to the estimated data set. The interquartile range increase in cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) at lag 1 was associated with increment of 8.1% (95% CI: 3.3, 13.2), 4.8% (95% CI: 0.2, 9.5) and 3.5% (95% CI: 1.1, 6.0) cardiovascular mortality. Selenium in lag 2 was inversely associated with cerebrovascular mortality (RR = 0.920 95% CI: 0.862, 0.983). Current-day exposure of aluminum was positively associated with mortality from ischemic heart disease (RR = 1.083 95% CI: 1.001, 1.172). Stratified analysis indicated sex, age and season modified the cardiovascular effects of As (P < 0.05). Our study reveals that heavy metal(loid) play key roles in adverse effects of PM2.5. Cd, Sb and As were significant risk factors of cardiovascular mortality. These findings have potential implications for accurate air pollutants control and management to improve public health benefits.

Job function as determinant of clinker exposure at workplaces during cement production.

In the cement production industry, exposure to airborne particulate matter is associated with a decline in lung function and increased airway symptoms. Exposure to clinker-the major constituent of cement and supposedly the cause of the observed adverse health effects-was determined recently in 15 cement production plants located in 8 different countries (Estonia, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey). It was shown that the median clinker abundance in the thoracic fraction varied between approximately 20% and 70% for individual plants. The present study complements the previous work by investigating the significance of job function as a determinant of clinker exposure. The elemental composition (water and acid-soluble fractions separately) of 1,227 personal thoracic workplace samples was analyzed by positive matrix factorization (PMF) to determine the contribution of different sources to the composition of airborne particulate matter and to quantify the clinker content. Median thoracic mass air concentrations varied for individual job functions between 0.094 and 12mg/m3 (estimated separately for different plants). The PMF 5-factor solution yielded median relative clinker abundances in the personal thoracic samples between 7.6% and 81% for individual job functions. Thoracic clinker air concentrations are highest for cleaning, production, and maintenance work, and lowest for administration and other work. Foremen and laboratory personnel show intermediate exposure levels. The plant was found to have a much higher contribution to the total variance of the thoracic clinker air concentrations than the job function. Thoracic clinker air concentrations (medians between 0.01 and 5.5mg/m3) are strongly correlated with the thoracic mass air concentrations and to a lesser extent with the relative clinker abundance in an aerosol sample. Job function is an important predictor of exposure to clinker in the cement production industry. As clinker is suspected to be the causal agent for the observed adverse health effects among cement production workers, the clinker air concentration may be a better exposure metric than thoracic air mass concentration despite the strong correlation between the two. Reduction strategies should focus on the most exposed job categories cleaning, production, and maintenance work.

Sampling, composition, and biological effects of Mexico City airborne particulate matter from multiple periods

Air pollution is a worldwide environmental problem with an impact on human health. Particulate matter of ten micrometers or less aerodynamic diameter (PM10) as well as its fine fraction (PM2.5) is related to multiple pulmonary diseases. The impact of air pollution in Mexico City, and importantly, particulate matter has been studied and considered as a risk factor for two decades ago. Previous studies have reported the composition of Mexico City particulate matter, as well as the biological effects induced by this material. However, material collected and used in previous studies is a limited resource, and sampling and particle recovery techniques have been improved. In this study, we describe the methods used in our laboratory for Mexico City airborne particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 sampling, considering the years 2017, 2018 and 2019. We also analyzed the PM10 and PM2.5 samples obtained to determine their composition. Finally, we exposed lung cell line cultures to PM10 and PM2.5 to evaluate the biological effect of the material in terms of cell viability, cell death, inflammatory response, and cytogenetic alterations. Our results showed that PM10 composition includes inorganic, organic and biological compounds, while PM2.5 is a mixture of more enriched organic compounds. PM10 and PM2.5 treatment in lung cells does not significantly impact cell viability/cell death. However, PM10 and PM2.5 increase the secretion levels of IL-6. Moreover, PM10 as well as PM2.5 induce cytogenetic alterations, such as micronuclei, anaphase bridges, trinucleated cells and apoptotic cells in lung cells. Our results update the evidence of the composition and biological effects of Mexico City particulate matter and provide us a reliable basis for future approaches.

The complex composition of organic aerosols emitted during burning varies between Arctic and boreal peat

AbstractPeatlands in the northern hemisphere are a major carbon storage but face an increased risk of wildfires due to climate change leading to large-scale smoldering fires in boreal and Arctic peatlands. Smoldering fires release organic carbon rich particulate matter, which influences the earth’s radiative balance and can cause adverse health effects for humans. Here we characterize the molecular composition of biomass burning particulate matter generated by laboratory burning experiments of peat by electrospray ionization 21 T Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, revealing a highly complex mixture of aromatic and aliphatic organic compounds with abundant heteroatoms including oxygen, sulfur and up to five nitrogen atoms. Primary organosulfur species are identified in the emissions of peat-smoldering, in part also containing nitrogen. Differences are observed when comparing structural motifs as well as the chemical composition of boreal and Arctic peat burning emissions, with the latter containing compounds with more nitrogen and sulfur.

The mechanism underlying correlation of particulate matter-induced ferroptosis with inflammasome activation and iron accumulation in macrophages

Particulate matter (PM) is a global environmental hazard, which affects human health through free radical production, cell death induction, and immune responses. PM activates inflammasomes leading to excessive inflammatory responses and induces ferroptosis, a type of cell death. Despite ongoing research on the correlation among PM-induced ferroptosis, immune response, and inflammasomes, the underlying mechanism of this relationship has not been elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated the levels of PM-induced cell death and immune responses in murine macrophages, J774A.1 and RAW264.7, depending on the size and composition of particulate matter. PM2.5, with extraction ions, induced significant levels of cell death and immune responses; it induces lipid peroxidation, iron accumulation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which characterize ferroptosis. In addition, inflammasome-mediated cell death occurred owing to the excessive activation of inflammatory responses. PM-induced iron accumulation activates ferroptosis and inflammasome formation through ROS production; similar results were observed in vivo. These results suggest that the link between ferroptosis and inflammasome formation induced by PM, especially PM2.5 with extraction ions, is established through the iron-ROS axis. Moreover, this study can effectively facilitate the development of a new therapeutic strategy for PM-induced immune and respiratory diseases.

Factors driving the bioavailability of particulate organic matter in the Ross Sea (Antarctica) during summer

The biochemical composition and bioavailability of particulate organic matter (POM) were studied in relation to abiotic (water column stratification, macronutrient concentrations) and biotic factors (phytoplankton biomass and functional groups) in the open Ross Sea and coastal area of Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, during the austral summer 2017. The presence of different sub-systems was highlighted by spatial and temporal variations of all the considered variables, characterised by higher concentrations of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen in Terra Nova Bay, where diatoms dominated, while in the open Ross Sea was higher the contribution of haptophytes (Phaeocystis antarctica Karsten, 1905). The southernmost Ross Sea was characterised by significantly higher concentrations of carbohydrates in the entire water column. High lipid contribution and low photosynthetic activity indicated aged POM, suggesting that POM was composed mainly by the remnants of previous haptophytes production. The higher lability of the carbohydrates indicated that an increase of haptophytes in the area could alter the biogeochemical C cycle, reducing the storage of refractory carbon in the depths, and favouring the transfer and respiration of C in the trophic web, with a decrease of export rate in the Ross Sea.

Characterizing PM2.5 Emissions and Temporal Evolution of Organic Composition from Incense Burning in a California Residence.

The chemical composition of incense-generated organic aerosol in residential indoor air has received limited attention in Western literature. In this study, we conducted incense burning experiments in a single-family California residence during vacancy. We report the chemical composition of organic fine particulate matter (PM2.5), associated emission factors (EFs), and gas-particle phase partitioning for indoor semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Speciated organic PM2.5 measurements were made using two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-HR-ToF-MS) and semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG). Organic PM2.5 EFs ranged from 7 to 31 mg g-1 for burned incense and were largely comprised of polar and oxygenated species, with high abundance of biomass-burning tracers such as levoglucosan. Differences in PM2.5 EFs and chemical profiles were observed in relation to the type of incense burned. Nine indoor SVOCs considered to originate from sources other than incense combustion were enhanced during incense events. Time-resolved concentrations of these SVOCs correlated well with PM2.5 mass (R2 > 0.75), suggesting that low-volatility SVOCs such as bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and butyl benzyl phthalate partitioned to incense-generated PM2.5. Both direct emissions and enhanced partitioning of low-volatility indoor SVOCs to incense-generated PM2.5 can influence inhalation exposures during and after indoor incense use.

Monitoring of Ventilation, Portable Air Cleaner Operation, and Particulate Matter in California Classrooms: A Pilot Study

Interest in improving ventilation and indoor air quality (IAQ) in California schools has grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents a field protocol for simultaneous monitoring of usage patterns of in-room portable air cleaners (PACs), indoor and outdoor concentrations and composition of particulate matter (PM), and CO2 as an indicator of outdoor air ventilation rates (VRs). This protocol was implemented for a 7-week pilot study in four occupied California classrooms in 2022. Monitoring results showed that VRs and indoor PM were generally well maintained in the classrooms studied. One classroom had much higher overall VRs, as well as higher average indoor PM2.5 concentrations compared to similar classrooms, suggesting a possible strong impact of window/door opening behavior on both VRs and indoor PM. The actual use patterns of PACs in these classrooms varied significantly. No clear correlations were observed between PAC use patterns and indoor PM2.5 concentrations in this pilot study, possibly due to low outdoor PM2.5 concentrations and already efficient central filtration (i.e., MERV 13 filters in central ventilation systems). Information gathered through such field monitoring can help schools to understand the actual classroom ventilation and IAQ conditions and best allocate resources to classrooms that need further IAQ improvements.

Particulate Matter Induces Oxidative Stress and Ferroptosis in Human Lung Epithelial Cells.

Numerous toxicological studies have highlighted the association between urban particulate matter (PM) and increased respiratory infections and lung diseases. The adverse impact on the lungs is directly linked to the complex composition of particulate matter, initiating reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and consequent lipid peroxidation. Excessive ROS, particularly within mitochondria, can destroy subcellular organelles through various pathways. In this study, we confirmed the induction of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death, upon exposure to an urban PM using RT-qPCR and signaling pathway analysis. We used KRISS CRM 109-02-004, the certified reference material for the analysis of particulate matter, produced by the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). To validate that ferroptosis causes lung endothelial toxicity, we assessed intracellular mitochondrial potential, ROS overproduction, lipid peroxidation, and specific ferroptosis biomarkers. Following exposure to the urban PM, a significant increase in ROS generation and a decrease in mitochondrial potential were observed. Furthermore, it induced hallmarks of ferroptosis, including the accumulation of lipid peroxidation, the loss of antioxidant defenses, and cellular iron accumulation. In addition, the occurrence of oxidative stress as a key feature of ferroptosis was confirmed by increased expression levels of specific oxidative stress markers such as NQO1, CYP1B1, FTH1, SOD2, and NRF. Finally, a significant increase in key ferroptosis markers was observed, including xCT/SLC7A11, NQO1, TRIM16, HMOX-1, FTL, FTH1, CYP1B1, CHAC1, and GPX4. This provides evidence that elevated ROS levels induce oxidative stress, which ultimately triggers ferroptosis. In conclusion, our results show that the urban PM, KRISS CRM, induces cellular and mitochondrial ROS production, leading to oxidative stress and subsequent ferroptosis. These results suggest that it may induce ferroptosis through ROS generation and may offer potential strategies for the treatment of lung diseases.

Towards a hygroscopic growth calibration for low-cost PM2.5 sensors

Abstract. Low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors continue to grow in popularity, but issues such as aerosol-size-dependent sensitivity drive the need for effective calibration schemes. Here we devise a time-evolving calibration method for the Plantower PMS5003 PM2.5 mass concentration measurements. We use 2 years of measurements from the Berkeley Environmental Air-quality and CO2 Network sensors deployed in San Francisco and Los Angeles in our analysis. The calibration uses a hygroscopic growth correction factor derived from κ-Köhler theory, where the calibration parameters are determined empirically using US Environmental Protection Agency Air Quality System (EPA AQS) reference data at co-location sites during the period from 2021–2022. The parameters are found to vary cyclically through the seasons, and the seasonal cycles match changes in sulfate and elemental carbon PM composition fractions throughout the year. In both regions, the seasonal RH dependence calibration performs better than the uncalibrated data and data calibrated with the EPA's national Plantower calibration algorithm. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the seasonal RH dependence calibration reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) by ∼40 % from the uncalibrated data and maintains a mean bias much smaller than the EPA national calibration scheme (−0.90 vs −2.73 µg m−3). We also find that calibration parameters forecasted beyond those fit with the EPA reference data continue to outperform the uncalibrated data and EPA calibration data, enabling real-time application of the calibration scheme even in the absence of reference data. While the correction greatly improves the data accuracy, non-Gaussian distribution of the residuals suggests that other processes besides hygroscopic growth can be parameterized for future improvement of this calibration.

Epigenetic mechanisms of particulate matter exposure: air pollution and hazards on human health.

Environmental pollution nowadays has not only a direct correlation with human health changes but a direct social impact. Epidemiological studies have evidenced the increased damage to human health on a daily basis because of damage to the ecological niche. Rapid urban growth and industrialized societies importantly compromise air quality, which can be assessed by a notable accumulation of air pollutants in both the gas and the particle phases. Of them, particulate matter (PM) represents a highly complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds of the most variable size, composition, and origin. PM being one of the most complex environmental pollutants, its accumulation also varies in a temporal and spatial manner, which challenges current analytical techniques used to investigate PM interactions. Nevertheless, the characterization of the chemical composition of PM is a reliable indicator of the composition of the atmosphere, the quality of breathed air in urbanized societies, industrial zones and consequently gives support for pertinent measures to avoid serious health damage. Epigenomic damage is one of the most promising biological mechanisms of air pollution-derived carcinogenesis. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the implication of PM exposure in diverse molecular mechanisms driving human diseases by altered epigenetic regulation. The presented findings in the context of pan-organic cancer, fibrosis, neurodegeneration and metabolic diseases may provide valuable insights into the toxicity effects of PM components at the epigenomic level and may serve as biomarkers of early detection for novel targeted therapies.

Monitoring For Elemental Composition Of Particulate Matter Deposited In Snow Cover Around Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant (Karaganda, Central Kazakhstan).

Studies on thermal power plant areas with respect to chemical composition of particulate matter deposited in snow cover are limited. This study aims to monitor (2014–2022) particulate load and trace elements associated with the particulate matter distributed around (0.5-4.5 km) the coal-fired thermal power plant in Karaganda. In this study, snow cover was used as an effective scavenger of atmospheric pollutants. Using instrumental neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry, the content of 26 elements and Hg, respectively, was determined in the particulate phase of snow. The results showed that particulate load varied from 26 to 1751, with mean of 427 and a background of 47 mg m-2 d-1. Anthropogenic impact caused a significant increase in content of U, Hg, Ta, Zn, Na, Cr, Co, Sr, Rb, Cs, Sc, Ca, Fe, Nd, Ba (2–30 times) in the samples compared to the background. Metal-bearing phases of Zn, Ba, As, U-Ta-Nb were detected through scanning electron microscope. The highest levels of particulate load (169–1032 mg m-2 d-1) and element contents in the samples were localized up to 0.7 km from the thermal power plant. The changes of particulate load and element composition of snow deposits during the monitoring period were connected with temperature, modernization of dust-collecting equipment, composition of coal and fly ash, long-range transport of emissions from other industries. The element content and metal-bearing phases in the particulate phase of snow can be used as markers for identifying emission sources from coal combustion.

Particulate matter composition drives differential molecular and morphological responses in lung epithelial cells.

Particulate matter (PM) is a ubiquitous component of air pollution that is epidemiologically linked to human pulmonary diseases. PM chemical composition varies widely, and the development of high-throughput experimental techniques enables direct profiling of cellular effects using compositionally unique PM mixtures. Here, we show that in a human bronchial epithelial cell model, exposure to three chemically distinct PM mixtures drive unique cell viability patterns, transcriptional remodeling, and the emergence of distinct morphological subtypes. Specifically, PM mixtures modulate cell viability, DNA damage responses, and induce the remodeling of gene expression associated with cell morphology, extracellular matrix organization, and cellular motility. Profiling cellular responses showed that cell morphologies change in a PM composition-dependent manner. Finally, we observed that PM mixtures with higher cadmium content induced increased DNA damage and drove redistribution among morphological subtypes. Our results demonstrate that quantitative measurement of individual cellular morphologies provides a robust, high-throughput approach to gauge the effects of environmental stressors on biological systems and score cellular susceptibilities to pollution.

Land use determines the composition and stability of organic carbon in earthworm casts under tropical conditions

Environmental conditions play an important role in controlling the fate of organic carbon (OC) in earthworm casts. However, the mechanisms that lead to the destabilization of OC in casts deposited in different land use systems are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of land use on the fate and composition of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in earthworm casts under tropical conditions. We conducted a 400-day field exposure experiment in a woodland and a meadow in northern Vietnam with earthworm casts and soil aggregates without trace of earthworm activity (reference soil) under natural rainfall conditions. We analyzed the element content, stable carbon isotope composition and mid-infrared signatures of the two types of materials after 9 and 400 days of field exposure. The results showed that the casts were initially enriched in OC as compared to the reference soils, with the MAOM fraction accounting for over 90% of the earthworm-induced OC accumulation. The POM fraction occluded in casts consisted of fresh plant material and disappeared during the 400 days of field exposure. Enrichment and composition of OC differed between woodland and meadow casts. POM and MAOM showed contrasting persistence in the two land use systems. While woodland casts showed the highest potential to stabilize OC, the actual amount of cast OC stabilized for more than 400 days was more important under meadow. The processes affecting cast OC dynamics were contrasting in both systems. Under woodland, cast OC destabilization was most probably related to microbial degradation, while under meadow, OC accumulation was most probably related to root activity. Our study highlights that the impact of earthworms on the origin, composition, and fate of cast OC in tropical environments is strongly influenced by land use.

PM2.5 in Cape Town, South Africa: Chemical characterization and source apportionment using dispersion-normalised positive matrix factorization

Understanding fine particulate matter (PM2.5) composition and sources is beneficial to improving visibility, addressing climate change, and mitigating poor air quality and related public health effects. Source apportionment techniques have been instrumental in evaluating the impact of sources and secondary processes on the ambient PM2.5 concentrations in receptor areas. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) is now the most commonly used tool due to its ability to provide mixture resolution based on available PM2.5 compositional data. Sampling and analysis of PM2.5 was conducted in Cape Town, South Africa from April 2017 to April 2018. The resulting data were dispersion normalized to address the modifications of the source concentrations resulting from the varying dispersion conditions and thereby permit dispersion normalized PMF (DN-PMF) to be employed. DN-PMF quantified the 6 sources as 2-stroke vehicles/galvanizing industries (16.8%); soil/road dust (12.3%); sulphate/marine diesel (3.6%), traffic (15.7%), sea salt (21.8%), and heating/biomass burning/cooking (15.7%). In addition, air mass back trajectory analysis using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model identified long-range transport pathways to Cape Town. The HYSPLIT results showed air masses from the Atlantic SSW (6%), Atlantic SW (24%), Indian Ocean (31%), and Atlantic WSW (39%) influence air quality. The primary sources affected by the transport clusters were heating, 2-stroke vehicles/galvanizing, road and soil dust, and traffic emissions. These results show that reducing emissions from the local sources will improve air quality.

Characterization of urban aerosol pollution before and during the COVID-19 crisis in a central-eastern European urban environment

The worldwide restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic induced a radical change in urban air quality. The objective of this work was to study and understand the variation of PMcoarse and PM2.5 pollution besides other air quality (AQ) parameters in the city of Debrecen, Hungary from 2018 to 2022. To achieve this goal, we introduced an integrated approach that combines source apportionment by receptor modelling, trajectory-based statistical methods and takes into account local and regional meteorology. Concentration, elemental composition, and sources of atmospheric particulate matter (APM) were determined for four lockdown periods with varying levels of restrictions, two transition intervals and two relaxation periods in 2020-22, and they were compared to corresponding baseline values from 2018-19. The concentration, composition and sources of PM2.5, PMcoarse showed strong seasonality. The main component of PMcoarse was mineral dust (32%), while BC (15%), sulphate aerosols (19%) and mineral dust (13%) were the major constituents of PM2.5. Source apportionment by Positive Matrix Factorization identified 8 sources on both size fractions: two types of soil, traffic, combustions, biomass burning, biogenic emission, sea salt, construction, roadworks, secondary sulphate. The relative contribution of sources did not change during the pandemic compared to the previous two years. However, considering the whole 2-year-long period affected by restrictions, a 20–25% reduction was detected in the concentrations and source contributions, apart from temporary sources like roadworks or sea salt episodes. The changed habits of the population could be traced in the evolution of APM. Before the pandemic, increased concentration of traffic related pollutants was characteristic of the school year, while in 2020-21 it was more typical in the summers, the relaxation periods. On the other hand, staying at home during lockdowns led to a significant increase in biomass burning from domestic heating in spring 2020 and 2021. By studying the individual lockdown and relaxation periods, we have shown that the evolution of APM pollution in relatively short, 2-3-month intervals was significantly influenced by local and regional meteorological parameters, the origin of air masses, desert dust episodes and periodic construction works.
