STATISTICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE DYNAMICS OF CHANGES IN THE CONCENTRATION OF PM 10 AND PM 2.5 PARTICLES IN THE AIR OF URBANIZED AREAS

This article addresses the issue of atmospheric pollution caused by solid particles in urban environments. The presence of PM10 and PM2,5 particles in the air of major cities and industrial areas worldwide has been examined. An evaluation of atmospheric pollution levels with PM10 and PM2,5 particles in Kostopil, considering current air quality standards in Ukraine and the European Union, has been conducted. The authors employed the gravimetric method to measure the levels of suspended dust particles (PM10 and PM2,5) in Kostopil from autumn 2022 to winter 2023. The study revealed an excessive amount of fine dust particles in the city's air, exceeding the maximum permissible values outlined in regulatory laws by 2.1-2.7 times. Furthermore, the monitoring of changes in suspended dust particle levels showed peak values of PM10 = 1.15 mg/m³ in January and PM2,5 = 0.96 mg/m³ in December. The results of the statistical analysis of particle level distribution in Kostopil's urban areas indicated the statistical significance of certain distribution parameters, specifically SW-W and D for PM10 and PM2,5 particle classes.

Nanoscale physical and chemical properties of individual airborne magnetic particles from vehicle emissions

Diesel and petrol powered vehicles are contributors to the magnetic fraction of atmospheric particles in the urban atmosphere. For an assessment of the health effects of vehicle-emitted magnetic particles, the mineralogical characters of particles present in engine exhaust vs. those produced by braking need to be understood. We collected magnetically separated individual particles directly from both brake wear and engine exhaust, from the air inside a car cabin while driving on a motorway, and from the ambient urban atmosphere. The morphologies, sizes, chemical compositions and spatial associations of magnetic particles with other constituents of vehicle emissions were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Magnetic separates typically contained particles that were aggregates of a large number of nanocrystals. Particles from engine exhaust, car cabin and urban air were similar, with diameters ∼1–4 μm, consisting predominantly of ∼10 nm-sized, randomly oriented crystals of magnetite and minor hematite. In contrast, brake debris particles were larger (∼1–10 μm in diameter) and contained mostly ∼7 nm-sized hematite, in addition to metallic iron and minor goethite. Particles in all samples comprised carbonaceous constituents besides iron oxides. In the exhaust and ambient particles carbon was present in both amorphous and semi-ordered forms, encompassing the nanocrystals, suggesting a high-temperature formation. In contrast, only amorphous carbon was found in brake wear. Besides the main components (Fe, O, C) several additional elements, including Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Sn, Ca, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Zr occurred in the particles, with some minor differences between the distinct types of samples. Whereas the overall characteristics of magnetic particles in exhaust emissions were similar to those of ambient particles, the brake emissions produced slightly different particle types, particularly in terms of size and mineralogy. Thus, based on the qualitative assessment of particle properties in direct emissions and ambient air, a significant portion of magnetic particles in urban air appears to originate from vehicle emissions. Although the aggregate particles have sizes in the μm range, they still may represent a potential health risk on inhalation. Synopsis: This article discusses the nanoscale properties of magnetic particles from vehicle emissions, for a better understanding of their sources and health effects. • The magnetic fraction of vehicle-derived airborne particulate matter can be collected using a simple device. • Exhaust emissions may constitute a substantial source of magnetic particles in urban environments. • Magnetic fraction of brake wear predominantly originates from the corrosion of the brake disc. • The primary magnetic agglomerates are small enough to reach the lungs upon inhalation.

Insufficient Condensable Organic Vapors Lead to Slow Growth of New Particles in an Urban Environment.

Atmospheric new particle formation significantly affects global climate and air quality after newly formed particles grow above ∼50 nm. In polluted urban atmospheres with 1-3 orders of magnitude higher new particle formation rates than those in clean atmospheres, particle growth rates are comparable or even lower for reasons that were previously unclear. Here, we address the slow growth in urban Beijing with advanced measurements of the size-resolved molecular composition of nanoparticles using the thermal desorption chemical ionization mass spectrometer and the gas precursors using the nitrate CI-APi-ToF. A particle growth model combining condensational growth and particle-phase acid-base chemistry was developed to explore the growth mechanisms. The composition of 8-40 nm particles during new particle formation events in urban Beijing is dominated by organics (∼80%) and sulfate (∼13%), and the remainder is from base compounds, nitrate, and chloride. With the increase in particle sizes, the fraction of sulfate decreases, while that of the slow-desorbed organics, organic acids, and nitrate increases. The simulated size-resolved composition and growth rates are consistent with the measured results in most cases, and they both indicate that the condensational growth of organic vapors and H2SO4 is the major growth pathway and the particle-phase acid-base reactions play a minor role. In comparison to the high concentrations of gaseous sulfuric acid and amines that cause high formation rates, the concentration of condensable organic vapors is comparably lower under the high NOx levels, while those of the relatively high-volatility nitrogen-containing oxidation products are higher. The insufficient condensable organic vapors lead to slow growth, which further causes low survival of the newly formed particles in urban environments. Thus, the low growth rates, to some extent, counteract the impact of the high formation rates on air quality and global climate in urban environments.

Formation of nighttime sulfuric acid from the ozonolysis of alkenes in Beijing

Abstract. Gaseous sulfuric acid (SA) has received a lot of attention for its crucial role in atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). And for this reason, studies until now have mainly focused on daytime SA when most NPF events occur. While daytime SA production is driven by SO2 oxidation of OH radicals of photochemical origin, the formation of SA during nighttime and its potential influence on particle formation remains poorly understood. Here we present evidence for significant nighttime SA production in urban Beijing during winter, yielding concentrations between 1.0 and 3.0 × 106 cm−3. We found a high frequency (∼ 30 %) of nighttime SA events, which are defined by the appearance of a distinct SA peak observed between 20:00 and 04:00 local time, with the maximum concentration exceeding 1.0 × 106 cm−3. These events mostly occurred during unpolluted nights with a low vapor condensation sink. Furthermore, we found that under very clean conditions (visibility > 16.0 km) with abundant ozone (concentration > 2.0 × 1011 cm−3, ∼ 7 ppb), the overall sink of SA was strongly correlated with the products of O3, alkenes and SO2 concentrations, suggesting that the ozonolysis of alkenes played a major role in nighttime SA formation under such conditions. This is in light of previous studies showing that the ozonolysis of alkenes can form OH radicals and stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCIs), both of which are able to oxidize SO2 and thus lead to SA formation. However, we also need to point out that there exist additional sources of SA under more polluted conditions, which are not investigated in this study. Moreover, there was a strong correlation between SA concentration and the number concentration of sub-3 nm particles on both clean and polluted nights. Different from forest environments, where oxidized biogenic vapors are the main driver of nighttime clustering, our study demonstrates that the formation of nighttime cluster mode particles in urban environments is mainly driven by nighttime SA production.

Physicochemical and morphological characterization of atmospheric coarse particles by SEM/EDS in new urban central districts of a megacity.

Physicochemical and morphological characteristics of atmospheric particles in new urban centers of fast-developing megacities are not well understood. In this study, atmospheric coarse particles (PM2.5-10) were simultaneously collected in multiple stations (10) in new urban centers, namely Beylikduzu, Buyukcekmece, and Esenyurt, of Istanbul using a modified passive particulate sampling method. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-photon spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was used to investigate the size distribution characteristics, chemical composition and their weight percent abundances, and morphological properties of the collected particles. The particle clusters were mainly dominated by Ca-rich Al silicates, Ca dominant, Ca- and S-rich, and NaCl particles, respectively. Their potential sources were assigned to the natural sources (e.g., wind erosion, soil resuspension, and sea sprays) and anthropogenic activities (construction, transportation, mining and crushing, and cement production). In addition to the major contributions (up to 47% of particle number abundance), the minor contribution clusters (less than 1%) with transitional metals rich particles (Fe, Zn, and Cu rich) mainly from anthropogenic sources (combustion, traffic, and vehicular emissions) were identified. The typical size range (> 0.65 to < 11.00μm) distribution of the major particle clusters fits a left-skewed modal distribution with a peak at 1.10-2.30-μm size range. However, the number of particles decreases significantly with increasing distance to the source, and this justification is stronger for larger size fractions (> 2.3μm). Particle numbers and varieties indicated significant spatial variations depending upon the identified sources, meteorological factors, and temporal conditions. In general, the results of this study suggest that the passive sampling of PM2.5-10 coupled with SEM/EDS based single-particle analysis is an effective tool to understand the physicochemical characterization and spatial and temporal variations of atmospheric particles in urban environments.

Dispersion of a Traffic Related Nanocluster Aerosol Near a Major Road

Traffic is a major source of ultrafine aerosol particles in urban environments. Recent studies show that a significant fraction of traffic-related particles are only few nanometers in diameter. Here, we study the dispersion of this nanocluster aerosol (NCA) in the size range 1.3–4 nm. We measured particle concentrations near a major highway in the Helsinki region of Finland, varying the distance from the highway. Additionally, modelling studies were performed to gain further information on how different transformation processes affect NCA dispersion. The roadside measurements showed that NCA concentrations fell more rapidly than the total particle concentrations, especially during the morning. However, a significant amount of NCA particles remained as the aerosol population evolved. Modelling studies showed that, while dilution is the main process acting on the total particle concentration, deposition also had a significant impact. Condensation and possibly enhanced deposition of NCA were the main plausible processes explaining why dispersion is faster for NCA than for total particle concentration, while the effect of coagulation on all size ranges was small. Based on our results, we conclude that NCA may play a significant role in urban environments, since, rather than being scavenged by larger particles, NCA particles remain in the particle population and grow by condensation.

Dynamic of submicrometer particles in urban environment.

Many studies show that particle toxicity increases with decreasing their size, emphasizing the role of submicrometric particles, in particular of ultrafine particles (<100nm). In fact, particles greater than 2.5μm are quickly removed through dry and wet deposition on the timescale of hours whereas submicrometer particles may reside in atmosphere for weeks, penetrate in indoor environment, and be long-range transported. High aerosol size resolution measurements are important for a correct assessment of the deposition efficiency in the human respiratory system, and time resolution is another important requisite. Starting from such considerations, time-resolved aerosol particle number size distributions have been measured in downtown Rome. Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measurements have been carried out at the INAIL's Pilot Station, located in downtown Rome, in an area characterized by high density of autovehicular traffic. The two instruments have allowed to investigate deeply the urban aerosol in the range of 5.6-560 and 3.5-117nm, respectively. In particular, the FMPS measurements have confirmed the interpretation about the transition phenomena in the time interval of few seconds, timescale typically associated with the emission of gasoline and diesel engines. In downtown Rome, the hourly average size distribution is bimodal or trimodal with maxima at about 5-15, 20-30, and 70-100nm. Particle formation in the nucleation mode was associated to freshly emitted autovehicular exhaust.

Distribution of pesticides in dust particles in urban environments

In regions with a mild climate, pesticides are often used around homes for pest control. Recent monitoring studies have linked pesticide use in residential areas to aquatic toxicity in urban surface water ecosystems, and suggested dust particles on paved surfaces as an important source of pesticides. To test the hypothesis that dust on hard surfaces is a significant source of pesticides, we evaluated spatial and temporal patterns of current-use insecticides in Southern California, and further explored their distribution as a function of particle sizes. Pyrethroid insecticides were detected in dust from the driveway, curb gutter and street at 53.5–94.8%, with median concentrations of 1–46 ng g−1. Pyrethroid residues were uniformly distributed in areas adjacent to a house, suggesting significant redistribution. The total levels of pyrethroids in dust significantly (p < 0.01) decreased from October to February, suggesting rainfalls as a major mechanism to move pesticide residues offsite. Fipronil as well as its degradation products, were detected at 50.6–75.5%, and spatial and temporal patterns of fipronil residues suggested rapid transformations of fipronil to its biologically active intermediates. Moreover, pyrethroids were found to be enriched in fine particles that have a higher mobility in runoff than coarse particles. Results from this study highlight the widespread occurrence of pesticides in outdoor dust around homes and the potential contribution to downstream surface water contamination via rain-induced runoff.

Review: Particle number size distributions from seven major sources and implications for source apportionment studies

Abstract The particle number size distribution (PNSD) of airborne particles not only provides us with information about sources and atmospheric processing of particles, but also plays an important role in determining regional lung dose. As a result, urban particles and their size distributions have received much attention with a rapid increase of publications in recent years. The object of this review is to synthesise and analyse existing knowledge on particles in urban environments with a focus on their number concentration and size distribution. This study briefly reviews the characterization of PNSD from seven major sources of urban particles including traffic emissions, industrial emissions, biomass burning, cooking, transported aerosol, marine aerosol and nucleation. It then discusses atmospheric physical processes such as coagulation or condensation which have a strong influence on PNSD. Finally, the implications of PNSD datasets for source modelling are briefly discussed. Based on this review, it is concluded that the concentrations, modal structures and temporal patterns of urban particles are strongly influenced by traffic emissions, which are identified as the main source of particle number in urban environments. Information derived from particle number size distributions is beginning to play an important role in source apportionment studies.

Source apportionment and water solubility of metals in size segregated particles in urban environments

Metals in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) have been associated with various adverse health effects. Different factors contributing to the characterization and distribution of atmospheric metals in urban environments lead to uncertainty of the understanding of their impact on public health. However, few studies have provided a comprehensive picture of the spatial and seasonal variability of metal concentration, solubility and size distribution, all of which have important roles in their contribution to health effects. This study presents an experimental investigation on the characteristics of metals in PM2.5 and coarse PM in two seasons from four urban sites in Hong Kong. The PM samples were extracted separately with aqua regia and water, and a total of sixteen elements were analyzed using ICP–MS and ICP–OES to determine the size segregated concentration and solubility of metals. The concentrations of major metals were distributed in similar patterns with the same order of magnitude among different urban sites. Source apportionment using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) indicated that three sources namely road dust, vehicular exhaust and ship emission are major contributors to the urban atmospheric metal concentrations in Hong Kong with distinctly different profiles between coarse PM and PM2.5 fractions. The individual metals were assigned to different sources, consistent with literature documentation, except potassium emerging with substantial contribution from vehicle exhaust emission. Literature data from past studies on both local and other cities were compared to the results from the present study to investigate the impact of different emission sources and control policies on metal distribution in urban atmosphere. A large variation of solubility among the metals reflected that the majority of metals in PM2.5 were more soluble than those in coarse PM indicating size dependent chemical states of metals. The data from this study provides a rich dataset of metals in urban atmosphere and can be useful for targeted emission control to mitigate the adverse impact of metallic pollution on public health.

Comparison of charged nanoparticle concentrations near busy roads and overhead high-voltage power lines

Overhead high-voltage power lines are known sources of corona ions. These ions rapidly attach to aerosols to form charged particles in the environment. Although the effect of ions and charged particles on human health is largely unknown, much attention has focused on the increasing exposure as a result of the expanding power network in urban residential areas. However, it is not widely known that a large number of charged particles in urban environments originate from motor vehicle emissions. In this study, for the first time, we compare the concentrations of charged nanoparticles near busy roads and overhead power lines. We show that large concentrations of both positive and negative charged nanoparticles are present near busy roadways and that these concentrations commonly exceed those under high-voltage power lines. We estimate that the concentration of charged nanoparticles found near two freeways carrying around 120 vehicles per minute exceeded the corresponding maximum concentrations under two corona-emitting overhead power lines by as much as a factor of 5. The difference was most pronounced when a significant fraction of traffic consisted of heavy-duty diesel vehicles which typically have high particle and charge emission rates.

The relationship between airborne small ions and particles in urban environments

Ions play an important role in affecting climate and particle formation in the atmosphere. Small ions rapidly attach to particles in the air and, therefore, studies have shown that they are suppressed in polluted environments. Urban environments, in particular, are dominated by motor vehicle emissions and, since motor vehicles are a source of both particles and small ions, the relationship between these two parameters is not well known. In order to gain a better understanding of this relationship, an intensive campaign was undertaken where particles and small ions of both signs were monitored over two week periods at each of three sites A, B and C that were affected to varying degrees by vehicle emissions. Site A was close to a major road and reported the highest particle number and lowest small ion concentrations. Precursors from motor vehicle emissions gave rise to clear particle formation events on five days and, on each day this was accompanied by a suppression of small ions. Observations at Site B, which was located within the urban airshed, though not adjacent to motor traffic, showed particle enhancement but no formation events. Site C was a clean site, away from urban sources. This site reported the lowest particle number and highest small ion concentration. The positive small ion concentration was 10%–40% higher than the corresponding negative value at all sites. These results confirm previous findings that there is a clear inverse relationship between small ions and particles in urban environments dominated by motor vehicle emissions.

Monitoring PM10 and Ultrafine Particles in Urban Environments Using Mobile Measurements

Mobile platforms are increasingly used to acquire air quality data at a high spatial and temporal resolution in complex urban environments. As such, mobile measurements provide a solution for short-term studies to acquire a spatially spread data set that would not be feasible if using stationary measurements. Mobile monitoring campaigns were carried out with a bicycle platform at two different urban locations, consisting of 20 and 24 repeated runs along a fixed route over a three-week period. The measurement runs were carried out on different days and at different times of the day, without systematical temporal coverage. Significant differences in UFP concentration were found within the day and between days, and also between several streets along the measurement route. These differences were related to traffic intensity and street characteristics. In contrast, PM10 concentrations differed between measurement days, but the within-day variability of PM10 was mostly non-significant. Additionally, the spatial variability was limited and the PM10 concentrations were only significantly different between busy streets, with high concentrations, and quiet background streets, with low ones. The results indicate that for most streets the number of runs was sufficient to give a good approximation of median daytime UFP concentration levels for the measurement period, and for some streets this number could even be reduced to less than 10. However, for PM10 a higher number of runs is needed, and this may be attributed to the significant background contribution to the roadside PM10 concentration, and the high variability of this. We conclude that a limited set of mobile measurements makes it possible to map locations with systematically higher or lower UFP and PM10 concentrations in urban environments.

Metal content in street dust as a reflection of atmospheric dust emissions from coal power plants, metal smelters, and traffic

Resuspended street dust is a source of inhalable particles in urban environments. Despite contaminated street dust being a possible health risk factor for local population, little is known about the contribution of atmospheric dust emissions and other factors to the content of toxic metals in street dust. The impact of smelting, traffic, and power plants on metal contaminates in street dust is the focus of street dust sampling at 46 locations in the Witbank area (Republic of South Africa). This area is characterized by numerous open-pit coal mines in the Karoo coal basin, which provides a cheap source of energy to numerous metallurgical smelters and ironworks and supplies coal to the coal-fired power plants located nearby. Street dust was collected on asphalt or concrete surfaces with hard plastic brushes, avoiding collecting of possible sand, soil, or plant particles. Chemical analysis was done on the <0.125 mm fraction using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry subsequent to total digestion. Exceptionally high concentrations of metals were detected with concentrations of Fe reaching 17.7%, Cr 4.3%, Mn 2%, Ni 366 mg/kg, and V 4,410 mg/kg. Factor analysis indicates three sources for the pollution. Road traffic which contributes to the high concentrations of Cu, Pb, Sb, and Sn, with the highest impacts detected in the town of Witbank. The second source is associated with the metal smelting industry, contributing to Fe, Co, Mn, and V emissions. The highest factor scores were observed around four metallurgical smelter operations, located in the Ferrobank, Highveld, and Clewer industrial areas. Impact of vanadium smelter to street dust composition could still be detected some 20 km away from the sources. Exceptionally high concentrations of Cr were observed in four samples collected next to the Ferrobank industrial area, despite Cr not being loaded in factor 2. The last source of the pollution is most probably fly ash associated with the coal-fired power plants and fly ash dumps. Elements which are associated with this source are Al, Sr, and Li. This factor is abundant in the coal mining part of the study area.

Intra-urban spatial variation of magnetic particles: Monitoring via leaf saturation isothermal remanent magnetisation (SIRM)

Motorised traffic generates large numbers of small-sized, magnetisable particulate pollutants in the urban environment. Exposure to these small particles has been associated with adverse effects on human health. Magnetic properties of these particles are, therefore, increasingly used for assessing environmental stress. Biomonitoring of magnetic particles accumulated on leaf surfaces may provide information on the concentration of, and exposure to, atmospheric particles at high spatial resolution. In this study, leaf saturation isothermal remanent magnetisation (SIRM) of three urban tree types (Carpinus betulus and Tilia sp. with hairy and non-hairy leaves) was measured at high spatial resolution in the city of Gent, Belgium, in June and September 2009. We compared leaf SIRM between land use classes with different urban habitat quality. In a multiple regression model, we tried to explain the spatial variability in leaf SIRM by tree species, sampling height, distance to the nearest road and its traffic intensity, tram frequency and a measure for regional traffic emissions (derived from traffic intensity of and the distance to the most important highways around and in the city in the main four wind directions). We found that the leaf SIRM was significantly influenced by tree species, distance to the nearest road and its traffic intensity and tram frequency. The SIRM significantly increased with increasing traffic intensity and tram frequency and by decreasing distance to the nearest road. It is concluded that leaf SIRM is a good bio-indicator for monitoring spatial variation of magnetic particles in urban environments.

A Pin-on-Disc Study Focusing on How Different Load Levels Affect the Concentration and Size Distribution of Airborne Wear Particles from the Disc Brake Materials

Airborne wear particles originating from disc brakes are one important contributor to the concentration of airborne particles in urban environments. It is therefore of interest to improve the knowledge of these particles. The purpose of this article is to investigate the concentration and size distribution of the airborne wear particles generated from the contact between a low-metallic pad material and a grey cast iron disc at different load levels. This is done on model level with a pin-on-disc machine that allows the cleanliness of the air surrounding the test specimens to be controlled, and thus the airborne portion of the wear particles to be studied separately. The concentration and size of airborne wear particles were measured online during testing with four particle instruments. In addition, airborne wear particles were collected on filters during the tests and afterward analysed using SEM. Trimodal size distributions with peaks around 280, 350 and 550 nm were registered during running-in for all load levels. After running-in bimodal size distributions with peaks around 350 and 550 nm were registered for all load levels with the exception of the highest load level where multimodal size distributions were registered. At the two highest load levels the concentration of ultrafine/fine particles showed an increase up to a factor hundred indicating a change in wear mechanism. SEM images show ultrafine, fine and coarse airborne wear particles.

Assessment of exposure to airborne ultrafine particles in the urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal

The aim of this study was the assessment of exposure to ultrafine in the urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal, due to automobile traffic, and consisted of the determination of deposited alveolar surface area in an avenue leading to the town center during late spring. This study revealed differentiated patterns for weekdays and weekends, which could be related with the fluxes of automobile traffic. During a typical week, ultrafine particles alveolar deposited surface area varied between 35.0 and 89.2 μm2/cm3, which is comparable with levels reported for other towns such in Germany and the United States. These measurements were also complemented by measuring the electrical mobility diameter (varying from 18.3 to 128.3 nm) and number of particles that showed higher values than those previously reported for Madrid and Brisbane. Also, electron microscopy showed that the collected particles were composed of carbonaceous agglomerates, typical of particles emitted by the exhaustion of diesel vehicles. Implications: The approach of this study considers the measurement of surface deposited alveolar area of particles in the outdoor urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal. This type of measurements has not been done so far. Only particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 (PM2.5) and >10 (PM10) μm have been measured in outdoor environments and the levels found cannot be found responsible for all the observed health effects. Therefore, the exposure to nano- and ultrafine particles has not been assessed systematically, and several authors consider this as a real knowledge gap and claim for data such as these that will allow for deriving better and more comprehensive epidemiologic studies. Nanoparticle surface area monitor (NSAM) equipments are recent ones and their use has been limited to indoor atmospheres. However, as this study shows, NSAM is a very powerful tool for outdoor environments also. As most lung diseases are, in fact, related to deposition of the alveolar region of the lung, the metric used in this study is the ideal one.
