The role of handwriting in English word acquisition among elementary students

In order to investigate whether handwriting has an advantage in learning word form, sound, and meaning, this study randomly selected 40 elementary school student participants (20 males, 20 females, aged 11.4 ± 1.34 years). Using an experimental approach, we compared the learning outcomes of word sound matching, word meaning matching, and word form judgment tasks under two conditions: handwriting and visual learning. After three consecutive days of learning and testing, we found that handwriting generally outperformed visual learning in terms of accuracy and response time in word form, sound, and meaning learning. Additionally, we observed differences in the timing of significant discrepancies in learning outcomes between the two methods across the three tasks. Specifically, in terms of accuracy, discrepancies first appeared in the word sound matching task on the first day, followed by the word form judgment task, and lastly the word meaning matching task. Regarding response time, significant differences between learning methods first emerged in the word form judgment task, followed by the word sound and word meaning tasks. Thus, combining accuracy and response time data, we conclude that handwriting is more advantageous than visual learning for word acquisition, with a differential impact on word form, sound, and meaning, where word form and sound are prioritized over meaning.

ANALISIS IMPLEMENTASI PENDEKATAN PEMBELAJARAN SAINTIFIK PADA MATA PELAJARAN PAI DALAM MENINGKATKAN BERFIKIR KRITIS SISWA DI PKPPS MINHAJURROSYIDIN JAKARTA

This research examines the analysis of the implementation of the scientific learning approach in the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subject at PKPPS Minhajurroosyidiin Jakarta with the aim of enhancing students' critical thinking. The study utilizes a qualitative method, focusing on a series of stages in scientific learning, including planning, design, observation activities, questioning, experiments, data analysis, presentation of results, and learning evaluation. The research findings indicate that this approach successfully increases student engagement, enriches the learning process, and develops critical and creative thinking skills in understanding the teachings of PAI. The effectiveness of the scientific learning approach is evident in several key aspects, such as placing students as active subjects in the learning process, fostering the development of critical thinking skills, increasing student engagement, achieving in-depth learning outcomes, and receiving positive responses from both students and teachers. Factors influencing the implementation of this approach include teacher readiness, the availability of learning resources, school leadership support, student participation, curriculum and evaluation alignment, school culture, as well as understanding and implementation of Islamic values. The synergy among these factors is crucial for the successful implementation of the scientific approach and the enhancement of students' critical thinking in the context of the PAI subject. This research contributes to understanding the practical application of the scientific learning approach in the PAI subject and its impact on improving students' critical thinking. The holistic implementation of this approach requires teacher readiness, school support, student involvement, and a deep understanding of Islamic values. The research results are expected to serve as a foundation for developing more effective learning strategies oriented towards the development of critical thinking skills in students within the context of Islamic education.

Calling All Future Educators: Investigating the Influence of a Teacher Recruitment Event

ABSTRACT There is a critical, nation-wide teacher shortage. Exacerbating this shortage is declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs that serve as a pipeline to the profession. To help address this shortage, school districts and teacher preparation programs across the country are implementing a variety of strategies to recruit high school students to consider pursuing a career as a PreK-12 teacher. While such initiatives are growing in number, little research has been conducted to guide and inform these initiatives, and little is known about the extent to which they are successful. In response, the researchers used a single-case study design involving survey and interview data collected from high school student participants to investigate the influence of a two-day recruitment event on participant knowledge about and attitudes toward becoming a teacher. Results confirmed that well-planned recruitment events can have a positive influence on participant knowledge of the teaching profession and attitudes toward becoming a teacher and offered multiple recommendations to guide and inform future recruitment initiatives.

Data Analytics for Societal Challenges: Examining Student Participation in the National School Lunch Program

ABSTRACT Rising child hunger rates in the United States underscore the critical role of school meals in providing reliable food access for many children. This study investigates factors shaping student participation in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), aiming to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 of Zero Hunger amidst the COVID-19 aftermath. While the NSLP promotes student health, participation gaps persist, necessitating targeted interventions. Leveraging data analytics, this research examines socioeconomic and school-specific variables to uncover participation patterns. Focused on a major US school district, the study aims to identify factors influencing middle and high school student meal participation, offering actionable insights for decision-makers. Key findings emphasize the pivotal role of free and reduced-price meal eligibility as the most influential factor for student participation, with other factors such as meal quality, transaction frequency, operating cycle, cuisine, and weather playing a secondary role.

Assessment of Factors Influencing Students’ Participation in Physical and Health Education in Secondary Schools in The Federal Capital Territory

This quantitative research study aims to understand the factors that influence the participation of secondary school students and teachers in Physical and Health Education (PHE) in public schools located in the Federal Capital Territory. The study involved a sample of 150 students and 20 PHE teachers, selected using a stratified random sampling technique to ensure diversity in the participant groups. Data collection was primarily done through a structured four-point Likert scale questionnaire, which evaluated level of participation, factors and barriers to engagement in PHE programmes. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted to summarise and analyse the data obtained. ANOVA was used to test for significant impacts of different factors on student participation in PHE, including student-related, teacher-related, and institution-related factors. The findings of the study indicate that teacher-related and institution-related factors have a significant impact on participation in physical and health education among secondary school students, while student-related factors were not found to be determinants. The study also found that the perceived importance of physical and health education, availability of facilities, and support from teachers and peers were the key factors influencing students’ participation in the subject. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing the importance of PHE in the curriculum, improving facilities and resources for physical and health education, and fostering greater collaboration between teachers and students to promote participation. Implementing these recommendations could potentially enhance student engagement and overall participation in physical and health education in secondary schools.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between recreation participation levels and time management of high school students studying in different high schools. In the study, the relational screening model was used as part of the survey model. The data collection tool of the study consisted of three parts: personal information form, "Recreation Participation Scale" developed by Procidano and Heller (1983) and adapted into Turkish by Sevil (2015) and "Time Management Scale" developed by Britton and Tesser (1991) and translated into Turkish by Alay and Koçak (2002). The study group consisted of students of Incirliova Sports High School, Nazilli Science High School, Bozdoğan İsmet Sezgin Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and Bozdoğan Anatolian High School in Aydın province in the 2022-2023 academic. Statistically, frequency analysis, reliability coefficient calculations, Pearson correlation analysis and Manova analysis were performed. The analyses were performed by adhering to a 95% confidence interval. A statistically significant difference was detected between the participants' recreational activity and gender, grade and doing sport variables, the cognitive activity sub-dimension and gender variable, the mean score of recreation participation and doing sport variable, and the time management of the participants and gender, high school type, income and doing sport variables (p<0.05). As a result, high school students have moderate levels of participation in recreational activities and time management. Participation of the high school students in recreational activities also decreased as their time management levels increased.

Engaging Underrepresented Youth: Remote Transition of the Health Career Collaborative Program

IntroductionPipeline programs can help increase diversity in health care by engaging underrepresented minority groups to pursue higher education and training in medical fields. Here we describe the implementation of Health Career Collaborative, a pipeline program designed to connect high school students with health care professionals, and the transition to remote delivery of the curriculum. MethodsThis study is a retrospective, descriptive observational study where the baseline characteristics of participating students were evaluated via preparticipation surveys. This study took place in a community with an area deprivation index of 6 at a high school in southern California in conjunction with an academic medical center and level I trauma center. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the program transitioned to a virtual setting in the second half of the academic year. ResultsA total of 37 high school student participants enrolled in the 2019-2020 Health Career Collaborative program, with over 97% identifying as Hispanic, 89% female, and 92% between the ages of 15 and 17. Ninety-five percent of students indicated plans to graduate from high school and attend college, and 89% agreed with having a mentor to help plan for their future. While high school students had exposure to several health topics prior to the program, students reported a preference to learn about health topics from doctors compared to other sources. ConclusionsAn online platform helped facilitate more interaction with health care professionals and could improve feasibility of implementing pipeline programs because physical space and transportation are not required.

Assessment of the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of the General Self-Efficacy Scale-12 (GSES-12) in a sample of Indonesian high school students

In recent decades, self-efficacy has been one of the major subjects of interest in the field of psychology, with numerous studies published on the topic. This study aims to examine the psychometric features of the General Self-Efficacy Scale-12 (GSES-12), a widely used instrument for assessing general self-efficacy. The Indonesian adaptation of the GSES-12 was validated using item factor analysis (IFA). The study involved a total of 584 high school student participants (M-age = 16.02, SD-age = 1.39; boys = 266, girls = 318). The results obtained from the IFA indicate that the psychometric properties of the GSES-12 were satisfactory. The results exhibited a strong fit with the second-order IFA models and all items had statistically significant factor loadings. In addition, the results obtained from the multigroup IFA indicate that the configural invariance testing models exhibited a satisfactory level of goodness-of-fit (RMSEA 0.06, CFI TLI 0.90). These findings suggest that there were no differences between the genders in the factor structure of the GSES-12.

Issues of understanding a literary text from a psycholinguistic perspective

The article describes psycholinguistic methods used to model the processes of modern schoolchildren’s perception and comprehension of the text of A. P. Chekhov’s short story "The Death of a Government Clerk". We postulate that the processes of perceiving and understanding fictional texts are conditioned by several factors. These include the quality of the text itself, its size, the closeness of the work to recipients, recipients’ gender- and age-specific qualities, and the peculiarities of their conceptual systems. The research data are the results of two-stage psycholinguistic experiments conducted with the participation of Omsk secondary and vocational school students. The first stage was performed according to the method of semantic differential. It aimed to diagnose the process of emotional perception in the experimental subjects. In the second stage, the students had to answer questions concerning the basic semantic lines of the text. The first stage revealed an emotional attitude to the text and the influence of the gender factor. The former was manifested in different intensities of the evaluation parameters concentrated in the area of negative coefficients. The second stage showed the results of the comprehension process as the totality of gender-, socially, and psychologically determined interpretations of the semantic content of the text. The comprehension process is associated with choosing certain supports such as particular textual signs, the socio-psychological model of the author, the plot, and others.

Effect of an Oncology Focused High School Outreach Event in Increasing Interest in Cancer Care and Healthcare Careers.

Despite widely heralded efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in oncology, few outreach programs exist to inspire high school students to pursue a career in medicine. Doctors' Day is an event developed and organized by medical trainees that features both didactic and hands-on learning components to provide high school students with exposure to the healthcare field and knowledge about cancer and cancer screening. We investigated in the influence of Doctors' Day on students' interest in healthcare careers and oncology. On March 30, 2023, health professions students and residents organized and led Doctors' Day, a half-day educational program for eight public high schools in Nashville, TN. After the event, high school student participants were invited to complete a 21-item survey. The questionnaire collected demographic information, feedback regarding the session, and comfort with various activities related to the program. Among the 8 public high schools involved in Doctors' Day, 91 participants completed the survey. Few (9, 9.9%) participants were White or European American, and 30 (33.0%) and 23 (25.3%) were Black and Hispanic, respectively. There were 20 (22.0%) participants who identified as LGBTQI+ with 2 (2.2%) indicating they were unsure. Feedback regarding the program was positive across all domains, and students reported increased interest in healthcare careers and oncology along with an increased comfort level in describing the importance of cancer screening. Our community outreach program for high school students with backgrounds underrepresented in medicine was effective in increasing interest in healthcare careers and oncology.

Student participation: between the twilight of the liberal model of democracy and the rise of neoliberal policies

ABSTRACT Student participation has become a relevant topic in the international debate on education. However, the conceptions of the meaning of participation and its practical implications are very heterogeneous. This article reviews how educational policies have conceived student participation in Western countries. Having conceptualised student participation, the role of the liberal model in shaping school democracy and student participation is explored. It is suggested that this model is in crisis due to two main factors. On the one hand, the organisation of democratic processes in schools has well recognised limitations. On the other hand, the pressure of the neoliberal agenda on standardisation and the emphasis on individual success omit any interest in democratic aims. The evolution of education policies concerning student participation is illustrated with reference to a case analysis of Spanish state educational legislation. The future of student participation is reflected on.

PENGGUNAAN MEDIA SEARCH ENGINE DALAM MENINGKATKAN CIVIC INTELLEGENCE SISWA PADA MATA PELAJARAN PKN

This study aims to explore the benefits of using search engine media in improving students' civic intelligence in Civic Education (Civics). Media search engines, such as online search engines, provide easy and quick access to various sources of information relevant to Civics Education materials. This study involved high school student participants who were involved in the use of search engines as a learning tool in Civics class. The results showed that the use of search engines has significant benefits in improving students' civic intelligence. The students reported that they were able to access extensive and diverse information, deepen their understanding of Civics concepts, and develop digital literacy skills. The use of search engines also provided opportunities for students to actively participate in class discussions, presentations and Civics projects.

Implementation Of The School Literacy Movement (GLS) In Growing Reading Interest Of The Students

According to some studies, reading is not very important for children in Indonesia. Students' reading interest is low, particularly in elementary schools. This is evidenced by children's lack of reading habits. The objective of this study was to determine: (1) the effectiveness of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) in fostering students' reading interest at SD Anugrah Denpasar; (2) the development of reading interest through GLS at SD Anugrah Dennpasar; and (3) the supporting and inhibiting factors of GLS in fostering students' reading interest. This study was qualitative method. Methods of data collection included observation, interviews, literature reviews, and documented studies. Data collection, data reduction, data presentation, inference, and verification methods were used to analyze the collected data. The findings of this study showed that (1) The stages of habituation, development, and learning were discussed in the context of GLS implementation. (2) Through GLS on indicators of reading interest, such as the need for reading material, actions to find reading materials, pleasure of reading material, interest in reading, and the desire to always read, students' reading interest can grow. (3) GLS supporting factors included: active participation of school members, planned programs, students, parental support, school environment, and facilities. The inhibiting factors included coordinators' consistency, the condition of the books, different interests, time allocation, and socialization.

RETRACTED: Predicting factors influencing perceived online learning experience among primary students utilizing structural equation modeling Forest Classifier approach

IntroductionAmid the COVID-19 pandemic, the temporary closure of educational institutions led to the adoption of remote or online learning delivery. Challenges, especially for grade schools were evident. ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify factors affecting the perceived online discussion experience of Filipino primary students through distance learning in the National Capital Region, Philippines. MethodVariables such as cognitive presence, teaching presence, social presence, and online discussion experience were investigated simultaneously by utilizing the structural equation modeling (SEM) and random forest classifier (RFC) approach. A total of 385 currently enrolled Filipino grade school student participants were surveyed. ResultsResults show that cognitive presence has the most significant impact on the perceived online discussion experience, followed by teaching presence, and social presence. This study is the first study that analyzed the online discussion experience among grade school students in online education in the Philippines considering SEM and RFC. It was seen that highly significant factors such as teaching presence, cognitive presence, social presence, triggering events, and exploration will lead to high and very high learning experience with grade school students. ConclusionThe findings of this study would be significant for teachers, educational institutions, and government agencies to improve the online delivery of primary education in the country. In addition, this study presents a reliable model and results which can be extended and applied for academicians, educational institutions, and the education sector to develop ways in enhancing the online delivery of primary education worldwide.

Development and Validation of the Father-Love Absence Scale for Adolescents.

Although father love is vital for the positive growth of the child, there is currently no reliable tool to assess the psychological absence of fathers. Therefore, the current study aims to develop an instrument to measure adolescents' experiences of father-love absence from a psychological absence perspective. According to the fundamental psychological diathesis assumption, the father-love absence scale (FLAS) was developed based on expert panel discussions. A total of 2592 junior high school student participants were surveyed, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to determine the items for the formal scale. The results showed that the 18-item FLAS consisted of four factors, which were emotional absence (EA), cognitive absence (CA), behavioral absence (BA), and volitional absence (VA). In conclusion, the FLAS demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity, and this scale is a valuable tool for assessing father-love absence.

Examining the Relationships between Primary School Students' Participation in Sports and Technology Addictions

This study aims to determine the relationship between primary school students' technology addiction levels and their participation in sports. For this purpose, in this study, technology addiction and sports participation levels of students studying in different primary schools in Almaty were examined according to their demographic characteristics. The study was conducted with the comparative correlational screening method, one of the general screening methods. The study sample consists of 252 private and public primary school students. "Technology Addiction Scale" and "Sport Participation Questionnaire" were used as data collection tools in the study. The data obtained from the study are expressed as mean and standard deviation (SD) values. T-tests from parametric tests and Pearson Product Moments Correlation technique analyses were used in the data analysis. The findings obtained from the study showed that primary school student's participation in sports is moderate, while their technological addiction is high. While the participation of primary school students in sports did not differ according to the gender variable, significant differences were observed in their technological addictions. Similarly, students' technological addictions differ according to their school types. Finally, a significant but negative relationship was found between primary school students' sports participation and technological addiction. It was observed that the technological addiction of the participants decreased as their participation in sports increased.

Conversely, project-based learning represents an instructional paradigm that integrates projects into the learning journey, with these projects encompassing both individual and group undertakings. Collaboratively pursued within defined temporal boundaries, such projects culminate in concrete outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the potential impact of project-based learning approaches on the participation of secondary school students. The systematic literature review method is employed to comprehensively evaluate existing research in this domain. By exploring the effects of project-based learning, the study sheds light on its role in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This investigation contributes to the ongoing discourse on innovative pedagogical strategies and their efficacy in the context of modern education.

Exploring the Value of Hosting a Grassroots Neuroscience Workshop That Facilitates Near-Peer Engagement Between Medical Students and High School Students (Local Brain Bee Participants) in a Developing Country in the Caribbean.

Objective This article explores the value of hosting a grassroots neuroscience workshop that facilitates near-peer engagement between year-one medical students and local Brain Bee finalists (high school students). Near-peer mentoring is a formal relationship in which more academically advanced students guide immediate junior students. We hypothesized that similar activities have teaching, learning, and psychosocial benefits for all andcan be easilyreplicated. Activity The Grenada National Brain Bee Challenge was launched in 2009 as a competition for high school students. Annually, there are at least 100high school students registering to participate in the national challenge. In 2018, a grassroots neuroscience symposium, a local initiative, was createdto prepare high school students who participated in the preliminary rounds for the final localand International Brain Bee competition. Traditionally, it is hosted annually by faculty at St. George's University School of Medicine (SOM). However, in 2022, the symposium was hosted by medical students. The symposium is designed as an eight-hour tutorial one-day session.The students rotate between facilitators as small groupteamsduring each teaching hour. There areicebreakers,content presentations, and neuroanatomy skills stations. The medical students demonstrate expertise inneuroscience contentand other aspects of professional competence. The activity was also designed to offer students of diversified backgrounds the opportunity to affect their educational pathways through role modeling, mirroring, and mentorship.Was this change beneficial to both sets of students (medical and high school)? Results and discussion We aim to determine the value of the near-peer relationship between the local 2022 Brain Bee finalists (high school students) (n=28)and university (medical) students (n=11). Participants were surveyed about their experience. Data were de-identified and grouped according to common themes. A thematic analysis was conducted on the data retrieved from the literature review. Data suggestthat both high school and university (medical) students report benefits after participating in near-peer engagement at a grassroots neuroscience symposium. In this teaching model, the medical students are the more experienced instructors and transfertheir knowledge and skills about the field to the high school students. The medical students have an opportunity to consolidate their personal learning and give back to the Grenadian community. While informal teaching occurs often, this type of near-peer engagement with students from the community helps medical students develop both personal and professional skills such as confidence, knowledge, and respect. This grassroots initiative is easily replicated in a medical curriculum. Themajor benefits experienced by the high school student participants (of varioussocioeconomic backgrounds) were access to educational resources. The symposium requires active engagement, fosters a sense of belonging, and promotes interest in pursuing careers in health, research, academia, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Conclusion Participating high school students of various genders and socioeconomic backgroundsgained equal access toeducational resources andmay select careers in health-related sciences. Participating medical students developedknowledge and teaching skills and engaged in a service-learning opportunity.

A comparison of sleep-wake patterns among school-age children and adolescents in Hong Kong before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The lifestyles change of children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic due to antipandemic measures can affect their sleep health. Existing studies have used convenient samples and focused on the initial months of the pandemic, leaving a knowledge gap on changes in young people's sleep patterns under the "new normal" under COVID-19. As part of a territory-wide epidemiological study in Hong Kong, this cross-sectional study recruited primary and secondary school students by stratified random sampling. Sleep parameters were collected using the structured diagnostic interview for sleep patterns and disorders. We investigated the pandemic's effects on sleep parameters by comparing data of participants recruited pre-COVID and those recruited during COVID using multivariate regression, adjusting for age, sex, household income, seasonality, and presence of mental disorders, and the moderators and mediators of the effects. Between September 1, 2019 and June 2, 2021, 791 primary and 442 secondary school students were recruited and analyzed. Primary school and secondary school participants assessed before COVID had a longer sleep latency on school days (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.0-5.2 minutes, adjusted P-value = .010; and 95% CI= 3.9-13.0 minutes, adjusted P-value = .004, respectively) and nonschool days (95% CI = 1.7-7.2 minutes, adjusted P-value = .005; 95% CI = 3.4-13.7 minutes, adjusted P-value = .014, respectively). Low household income was a moderator for later bedtime (adjusted P-value = .032) and later sleep onset (adjusted P-value = .043) during nonschool days among secondary school students. Changes associated with COVID have a widespread and enduring effect on the sleep health of school-aged students in Hong Kong. Household income plays a role in adolescent sleep health resilience, and the impact of antiepidemic measures on the health gaps of the youth should be considered. Chau SWH, Hussain S, Chan SSM, etal.
