Participation and learning in Vocational education and training - a cross-national analysis of the perspectives of youth at risk for social exclusion

ABSTRACT The article explores the experiences of youth at risk for social exclusion and is part of cross-national research involving Norway, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. 79 young people aged 16–29 who are at risk of becoming economically and socially marginalised were interviewed about circumstances that may support or hinder their participation and learning in VET. The study draws on sociocultural theory, emphasising learning as participation in social practices. Thematic analyses indicate that negative experiences in the past affect current participation in VET. In all countries, VET offers opportunities for participation for students at risk of social exclusion. However, vulnerable youth do not navigate the paths of social engagement well on their own. In the case of VET-students at risk for social exclusion, the mere development of knowledge and skills relevant for employment in the labour market does not suffice. VET institutions will need to facilitate students’ participation in learning communities. Building social capital for youth at risk through developing relationships that generate motivation, trust, and confidence enhances students’ opportunities for participation and subsequent learning. VET teachers and workplace supervisors will need guidance on how to develop the pedagogical competencies necessary to nurture social capital for students at risk for social exclusion.

Author’s agency in a research article: From the grammar of language to the grammar of communication

Introduction. Writing for publication has been developed for two last decades as an independent field of research to help authors publish their research articles. Starting from the assessment that preparing the publication in a journal is an academic activity that requires learning to construct the author’s positioning in the manuscript, this paper points out the shortage of professionals to assume institutional organisation of training courses in Russia.Aim. This paper aims to suggest a framework for informal practices based on autonomy and the collective organisation of authors to construct an authorial position in the manuscript or author’s agency toward a target journal.Methodology and research methods. Various approaches applied in this paper are based on activity theory: situated learning, Change Laboratory, and expansive learning.A review of Russian and foreign research in writing for publication shows that only one of the three types of authorial agency, that is, transformative agency, might help the author to prepare a manuscript for publication in a target journal. The framework needed for emerging author’s transformative agency re-conceptualises the model of the Change Laboratory for situated learning that aims at the author’s socialisation in the discursive practices of a target journal. Situated learning for writing for publication is based on the principles of the Change Laboratory: collectivity; double stimulation; overcoming the contradiction by ascending from the abstract to the concrete.Results. A framework for three cycles of expansive learning aimed at the emergence of the author’s agency toward a target journal has been developed. The first cycle allows selecting a journal and revealing its implicit rules for manuscript production. The second cycle is focused on step-by-step manuscript revisions. Finally, a change of journal and/or author whose manuscript is discussed involves the third cycle of expansive learning.Scientific novelty. The paper considers manuscript production for publishing in a journal as an academic activity requiring deliberate training in native and foreign languages. The framework for three cycles of expansive learning in writing for publication conceptualises the publication as the author’s participation in social practices involving the journal as a discursive community.Practical significance. The framework suggested in this paper for emerging transformative agency in writing for publication might imply an alternative to the institutional training courses. Three cycles of expansive learning aim to develop the author’s publication competence and improve the quality of research articles.

Territorial identity of the population as a factor an consequence of social participation

The main objective of the article is to demonstrate the correlation between the lev el of territorial identity of the population and the development of social participation practices. The theory and methodology of the study is based on the works of foreign scientists T. Banini, R. Capello, U. Panzer, who prove the pronounced active position of the population with a high level of territorial identity, and on the concept of “the right to the city” by H. Lefebvre, presented in Russian realities in the works by I.A. Skalaban, E.S. Kochukhova, V.S. Martyanova, E. A. Terentyeva. The main hypothesis of the study: the population with a high level of territorial identity declares its “right to the city” through the practices of social participation, that are manifested mostly in the field of urban space planning, inclusion in the practices of participatory management. In turn, practices of social participation at the local level strengthen territorial identity and boost formation of the attachment to the place of residence. Information collection method: mass survey of the population of the city of Cherepovets, Vologda Region, based on a quota sampling of the population over 18 years old according to the gender and age structure of the city. According to the results of an empirical study, it was proved that the population with a higher level of territorial identity has a significantly greater presence of informal participation practices, especially those related to the transformation of urban space. The practices of helping behaviour are most clearly expressed and the involvement in the activities of public city organisations is more common. It was proved with the help of dispersion analysis that population groups with different levels of social participation practices statistically differ in terms of the level of territorial identity.

High-impact educational practices: participation of Chinese and American undergraduates during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to challenges in high-impact extra-curricular educational practice. Using cross-national, large-scale survey data, this study discusses the current state of participation of high-impact educational practices (HIPs) among Chinese and American undergraduates, changes in this participation over time, and the differences between undergraduates in the two countries in this regard, from 2018 to 2021. We find that participation in social practices was significantly greater than research-related and extended learning activities in both China and the U.S. The involvement of first-year undergraduates in the three typical HIP activities was lower than that of seniors, especially in doing research with faculty. American seniors participated more in service learning and study abroad than Chinese seniors. The proportion of senior students who had studied abroad was lower than the proportion of first-year students who planned to study overseas, particularly in China. COVID-19 led to a significant drop in participation in service learning and study abroad in China, and it also amplified the impact of institutional support on the participation of undergraduates in HIPs.

Becoming cabin crew: a situated learning approach to training and workplace experience

ABSTRACT This paper provides a perspective on learning in which training and situated learning complement each other in developing cabin crew competence. Traditionally, airlines have approached cabin crew training from a competency-based, behavioural perspective with limited engagement in the actual work context. This ethnographic study builds on contemporary learning theoriesto argue that participation in social practice is essential for developing cabin crew competence. More importantly, it was found that learning arises in the frictions and negotiations between identity, knowledge, and values fostered in training and the workplace experience of the cabin crew. These findings contribute to the situated learning literature by expanding the notion that training may also have characteristics of social practice. Likewise, understanding learning arising from the negotiation of different contexts offers a broader perspective of situated learning. These findings in the learning processes of cabin crew may contribute to the improvement of the airlines’ training programmes and potentially to other contexts of high social interaction, such as hospitality and healthcare.

The Innovation of College Students' Ideological and Political Education under the Intelligent Environment of Internet of Things.

With the development of the times and the continuous improvement of the requirements for college students' political literacy and identity, the informatization reform and educational innovation of college students' ideological and political education have become the focus and difficulty of teaching reform. The ideological and political education in most domestic colleges and universities still focuses on the elaboration of theoretical knowledge, ignoring the importance of social practice. Therefore, this paper puts forward the research on the innovation of college students' ideological and political education in the intelligent environment of the Internet of things, constructs the college ideological and political education training cloud system through the Internet of Things technology and AR technology, and promotes the realization of the purpose of college students' participation in social practice. The experimental results show that the college ideological and political education training cloud system based on AR and Internet of Things technology can improve the interaction and participation of ideological and political courses, stimulate students' interest and enthusiasm, deepen students' understanding of the content of ideological and political education, and better understand the importance of ideological and political education. At the same time, the system is also the exploration and practice of teaching innovation of ideological and political education in the intelligent environment of Internet of Things. It is a new attempt of ideological and political education reform in colleges and universities.

Beyond individual language brokering: Family literacy brokering

Drawing on ethnographic data from everyday practices within an Afghan-origin family in Denmark, the present study takes a language brokering perspective to investigate literacy—doing things with texts. It shows that literacy is social, multilingual, multimodal, and imbued with attitudes, norms, and values. Additionally whereas several previous research concentrate on one youth or child language broker, the study illustrates that language brokering involves multiple parties and develops multidirectional interactions, particularly when the family is relatively newly arrived. Furthermore, focusing on literacy events provides insights into how discussing language within interactional settings may advance processes of learning and participation in social practices. Methodologically, the study applies a linguistic ethnographic approach and engages both emic and etic views to the family members’ negotiations of social and linguistic practices, identities, and relations.

Does MacIntyre's Moral Sociology Presuppose a Personalist Moral Psychology? MacIntyre and Tomasello on Moral Psychology

Alasdair MacIntyre has developed a theory of virtue ethics that is closely integrated with sociology and organization studies. While rejecting reductive views of the virtues, MacIntyre appeals to their functional role in facilitating collaboration as a basis for justifying their normative requirements. This raises the question of how agents within cooperative contexts come to appreciate their intrinsic value. I argue that MacIntyre's account of the virtues is undergirded by an implicit personalist moral psychology. To make this evident, I draw upon the account of moral psychology developed by Michael Tomasello, who argues that a sense of moral obligation is generated when persons engage in collective action. Tomasello's account complements MacIntyre's by explaining how participation in social practices generates a sense of moral obligation but it does not address the problem of relativism. As a result, it does not fully explain how and why participants in practices come to see themselves as bound by moral norms since the threat of relativism undermines the idea that moral norms are binding. This limitation further illustrates the role of a personalist moral psychology in MacIntyre's work: through the experience of cultural breakdown persons are able to view themselves as engaged in a shared inquiry concerning the good that transcends any specific culture. This provides the basis for a self-conscious sense of moral obligation that is not threatened by relativism.

Study on the Socialized Operating Mechanism and Organizational Pattern of College Student Volunteer Service

Guided by the state leader Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, this paper is based on the spirit in the Interim Procedures for the Student Volunteer Service Administration and Opinions on Furthering Student Volunteer Service Activities issued by the Ministry of Education, as well as Opinions on Carrying out Volunteer Service Activities issued by the Committee for Civilization. Based on the principles of support and encouragement, volunteer without compensation and timing and appropriate amount, this paper was conducted from the perspective of long-term standardization and normalization of college student volunteer service. This paper not only studied systems and organizational models like the legislation, access, audit, management, assessment about the operation of socialized organizations but also explored management mechanisms like the access, certification, service, assessment, incentive, guarantee and the operation models of college student volunteers. Moreover, this paper tried to solve problems like the scientificity, public welfare, standardization, specialization, normalization and institutionalization, informatization, long-term phenomenon, etc. existing in the social operation of the college student volunteer service. It also concluded and explored the effective mechanism of college students’ practical teaching and their participation in social practice and community service, trying to build the service system which involves the certification, assessment, evaluation and guarantee of the college student volunteer service. The basic rules and the organizational management mode of how socialized organizations participate in the recruitment and organize college student volunteer activities were also worked out in this paper. It was intended to improve the satisfaction, acquisition and happiness of the society towards the college student volunteer service needs as well as to promote the volunteer spirit of “dedication, friendship, mutual assistance and progress”.

Cognitive and Sociocultural Perspectives: Approaches and Implications for Learning, Teaching and Assessment

The primary role of educators is to best serve and support students’ learning. To this end, the epistemological beliefs they hold are immensely influential, governing (both explicitly and implicitly) educators’ assumptions about how students learn, which determines the curriculum design and instructional methods utilized to support that learning. Over the years, two prominent and influential epistemological theories have developed – the cognitive perspective, which focuses on learners’ mental processes, and the sociocultural perspective, which focuses on learners’ participation in social practices within a particular context – with each providing their own unique contributions to the field of education. Using the example of the learning goal of students’ mastery of English for passing the TOEFL, the purpose of this paper is to explore how these two perspectives view knowing and learning, and the implications of this for motivating engagement and assessing learning. By drawing on and utilizing a synthesis of the cognitive and sociocultural perspectives, educators can align their learning outcomes with the most pedagogically-appropriate approach possible, to best support overall student learning and academic success.

The Implementation of Social Innovations in Macro Policy Documents to Increase Social Participation in Science and Technology (Case Study of Strategic Transformation of Science and Technology Document)

Introduction: due to the inefficiency of social participation practices in science, contemporary science policy discourses seek innovative models to increase public participation and cooperation between governments and the public. This is because, socially innovative practices can increase citizen participation in a more appealing way. The present study aims to implement socially innovative practices to increase social participation in the Strategic Transformation of Science and Technology Article.Method: This research is carried out in three steps (description, challenge-finding and solution presentation). First, after interviewing the experts and using the thematic analysis technique, the framework for social participation in science and technology in macro documents was extracted and then calibrated using Fuzzy Delphi to reach theoretical saturation. Subsequently, in the challenge-finding phase, the text of the Strategic Transformation of Science and Technology Article was evaluated using the quantitative content analysis technique. In the third step, after reviewing the views of people familiar with social participation solutions in science and technology, a number of solutions were identified.Findings: The various components found in the evaluation of social participation in macro documents of science and technology, include: 1. direct reference to social participation, 2. indirect reference to social participation, 3. objectives pursued by social participation, 4. instruments for the realization of social participation and 5. tools used by stakeholder to encourage social participation. The results showed that social participation in science and technology were not adequately addressed in this document, and finally, according to research findings, 25 innovative social solutions were suggested to solve the challenges.Discussion: According to research results, one of the main priorities in science and technology programs should be the promotion of the individual’s awareness which in turn leads to social participation in science and technology. Several studies point out social innovation as one of the ways to achieve this.

SOCIAL NETWORKS AS A MECHANISM FOR INCLUDING RESIDENTS IN SOCIAL PARTICIPATION PRACTICES OF TERRITORY DEVELOPMENT

The article is devoted to the study of the role of social networks in development of a territory through the inclusion of individuals in social communities that influence the socio-economic, socio-cultural development of cities and regions. A social network in the present article refers to the structure of social relations and relationships between people, based on respect, common interests and mutual assistance. The study reveals some interconnections between indicators of a given social network (as structures of interaction between people) and living conditions (as characteristics of the level of territory development), and also shows through which social connections a person is most often included in social participation practices that contribute to development of a territory. In the study authors used the method of correlation analysis of the open database of the “Legatum Institute” analytical center. Another method consists of analysis of social graphs based on data from the social networking service “Vkontakte”. Weak-moderate but statistically significant associations are found between indicators of territorial development and indicators that determine quality of a social network (level of respect, harmony of interests and assistance to others). The study revealed a mechanism of multidirectional relationships between social networks and living conditions. Through this mechanism, territorial development can be ensured even in situations of crisis and economic instability. Analysis of social graphs showed that social networks differ while being linked to people who are socially active and socially passive in the number of social connections, in the number of social communities in which they are included, in the type of these communities. An important conclusion was made that university more often promotes inclusion in social participation practices precisely through development of new connections in a social network. While school systems contribute little to this. There is also a relatively low level of inclusion of youth in activities of territorial communities (POA, courtyard, housing, city communities, etc.), which requires a further detailed study.

Aspectos do ensino e aprendizagem da oralidade na escola

Objetivamos refletir sobre os aspectos relativos ao ensino-aprendizagem da oralidade na sala de aula, dirigindo o olhar para os gêneros textuais como organizadores das práticas sociais e discursivas. Realizamos uma pesquisa qualitativa, na qual aplicamos a entrevista narrativa com dois professores de escolas públicas de Pernambuco que ensinam língua portuguesa em diferentes realidades (uma municipal e uma federal). Os professores demonstram reconhecer que a participação significativa do indivíduo nas práticas sociais, a partir do uso da linguagem oral, reflete nos processos de inclusão; apontam como importante o trabalho com a diversidade de gêneros orais, e variedades linguísticas; e, sinalizam questões históricas quanto ao trabalho do livro didático com a oralidade, indicando as necessidades de se investir na pedagogia de ensino da “fala”. Concluímos que o estudante tem a possibilidade de ampliar seus conhecimentos quando a escola se apresenta como espaço de sistematização do saber construído sócio historicamente, numa perspectiva inclusiva.

Socio-economic status, self-rated health and mental health: the mediation effect of social participation on early-late midlife and older adults

BackgroundSocioeconomic status (SES) is a major determinant of diverse health outcomes, among these are self-rated-health and mental health. Yet the mechanisms underlying the SES—health relation are not fully explored. Socioeconomic inequalities in health and mental health may form along several pathways. One is social participation which is linked to better self-rated-health and mental health. We examined (1) whether various social participation practices, including the usage of information and communication technology, relate to a unidimensional or multidimensional phenomenon (2) the relationship among SES, social participation, self-rated-health and mental health; (3) whether social participation and mental health mediates the association between SES and self-rated-health; (4) whether social participation and self-rated-health mediates the links between SES and mental health.MethodCross-sectional data for individuals aged 35 and older were taken from the Israeli Social Survey for 2016 (N = 4848). Social participation practices included connection with family and friends, self-perceived-support, self-perceived trust, volunteering, civic and political involvement, and information and communication technology usage. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted for all social participation practices. We then constructed structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to explore paths of relations among SES, social participation, self-rated-health and mental health.ResultsWe found disparities in self-rated health and mental health across SES. Social participation practice, ‘frequency of meeting with friends’, mediated the links between SES-self-rated health and SES-mental health. Formal social participation practices along with internet usage mediated the SES- self-rated health link. Informal social participation practices and self-perceived trust mediated the SES-mental health link. Mental health mediated the SES- self-rated health link and self-rated health mediated the SES-mental health link.ConclusionThe links between SES and the two health constructs were enhanced by common and distinct social participation practices. Enhancement of social participation practices among low SES individuals is recommended. Social participation should be a prominent aspect of preventive medicine practice and health promotion interventions. Policy makers are called to support such programs as an important way to promote public health.

Social practices of the «high society» lifestyle in the work of O. Makovei «Biography of Osyp Yurii Fedkovych-Hordynskyi»

The work of O.Makovei «Biography of Osyp Yurii Fedkovych-Hordynskyi» is analyzed in the article. The goal of the article is to find in the text representations of social practices, which were peculiar for the high society lifestyle in the medium of the educated middle class – intelligentsia – in the Duchy of Bukovyna throughout the 19th.century. In the discourse of the author’s biographical work and in used memories of Fedkovych’ contemporaries it is stressed that noble standards of living were the ideal of the social life in Bykovyna and Chernivtsi, herewith negative connotations were present in such statements.
 The lifestyle of Y.Fedkovych’s parents suited this definition, while the poet in his conscious age tried to oppose to such a lifestyle. That is why his behavior in front of the audience was characterized by displays of protest against following elite standards of living in the society. Probably, his demonstrational wearing of rustic (Hutsul) clothing was also connected with his goal.
 Despite the fact that his participation in social practices of the high society lifestyle allowed Fedkovych to gain support of his writing talent in the 1860s, in the 1870-1880ss he was demonstratively violating accepted behavioral norms, which were generalized as the rules of common courtesy. Furthermore, he tried to stress that he is equal with villagers, he called himself Hutsul. But O.Makovei found out that Hutsuls still considered Fedkovych to be a stranger – «lord in disguise», «German».
 While analyzing life and works of Y. Fedkovych, O.Makovei described poet’s social surrounding – intelligentsia- and its peculiar social practices such as following the common courtesy rules in self-representation (manners, clothes, communication), different types of intelligentsia leisure (clubs, salons parties, theatre) and cooperation.

COLLECTIVE MEMORY AS A FACTOR OF GROUP IDENTITY FORMATION

In contemporary scientific discourse, interest in memory problems has increased significantly. This trend, in our opinion, is due to a number of factors, among which one of the leading places is «democratization» of history. This process began to a large extent under the influence of a violent wave of emancipation of peoples and ethnic groups, which began at the end of the twentieth century. It actualized the need to rethink the past and revive a large part of the cultural heritage of a number of ethnic and ethno-regional communities.Growth of attention to memory studios was facilitated by globalization. Itsliberal-oriented universalist intentions led to the erosion of the foundations of national identity without deprecating sociality as such. The fluidity and rapid change in social standards that have become a logical consequence of this process have shown the urgent need to find those ideological landmarks that can provide certainty at least on a daily basis. Here, a person feels the need for group consolidation, which is perceived directly through participation in social practices. Such practices reproduce the identity of the group and at the same time broadcast a historically formed and established system of group values. The revival of local forms of identity, which takes place under the influence of globalization in the conditions of the rapidity of social standards, can be regarded as a completely positive phenomenon. Meanwhile, in cases of politicization of collective memories, such local groups can significantly undermine the stable development of national states. The purpose of the study is to reveal the value of collective memories in the process of forming and preserving group identity.The task of the paper was to identify the universal foundations of human sociality and to reveal the importance of collective memories in the process of formation and preservation of group identity. Methods. The methodological basis of the study was the multidisciplinary approach, which was combined with the principles of objectivity and impartiality. The basic place in the process of scientific understanding of the role of memory in the process of formation and preservation of group identity was played by general scientific principles and methods, namely: the principles of historical and logical unity, objectivity, integrity and comprehensiveness. Also were used such general scientific methods as analysis and synthesis, induction, analogy, retrospective,comparison, etc. Along with the mentioned methods were widely used methods of cultural, social and categorical analysis, as well as the principles of philosophical hermeneutics. Results In the course of the study, M. Halbwachs’es implicit conclusion about the key role of collective memories in the process of formation of collective identity was refuted, some aspects of collective memory theory developed by him were specified. In particular, the provision on the decisive role of collective memory in the process of formation of group identity was revised and the importance of social friendship in the process of formation of the social community was shown, the persistence and moral significance of which is determined by common memories.Memories provide the appearance of images that become the status of collective identity symbols, which contain behavioral patterns and moral teachings for members of the community. Common memories can be transmitted through direct communication that covers a limited social space, or to be executed in a ritual and/or text. Due to rites or texts reinterpretations, a significant part of the memorization that is important for the collective identity can remain unchanged for a long time.

The culture industry revisited: Sociophilosophical reflections on ‘privacy’ in the digital age

Digital communication now pervades all spheres of life, creating new possibilities for commodification: personal data and communication are the new resources of surplus value. This in turn brings about a totally new category of threats to privacy. With recourse to the culture industry critique of early critical theory, this article seeks to challenge basic theoretical assumptions held within a liberal account of privacy. It draws the attention to the entanglement of technical and socio-economic transformations and aims at elaborating an alternative framing which takes into account that privacy is not in the first place a pre-political space for individual freedom but a constituted sphere in which social power relations are reproduced in a particularly deceitful way. With recourse to positions of critical theory, this article revisits the conceptual ambiguity of liberation and oppression and looks to draft prospects for a socio-theoretical justification and critique of privacy, updated for the digital age. Following the tradition of critical theory, the argument focuses on (new) forms of domination in and by privacy. It aims to prepare the ground for a critique of the social’s increasing commodification as well as an idea of privacy understood as reflexive participation in social practices.

Transformation of "citizenship" among pro- and post-NASHI activists in St Petersburg

The paper is devoted to the analysis of youth’s understanding of citizenship which includes young people’s self-identification as citizens, peculiarities of youth interpretations of the notion of citizen and the practices of citizenship implementation. The article describes transformations of the understanding of citizenship in youth environment through the analysis of young people’s settings, preferences, social participation practices and involvement in activist communities, perceptions of events which happen in their city, country or in the world, as well as motives of their engagement with youth movements. The empirical basis of the study is the data of several projects conducted by the Center for Youth Studies from 2011 to 2017. Each of these projects aimed at studying specific transformations of solidarity youth movements - pro-Kremlin movements, using qualitative methods, namely overt observation, in-depth biographical interviewing and partly the case-study method.

Piper’s question and ours: a role for adversity in group-centred views of non-agentive shame

This paper aims to contribute to ‘group-centred views’ of non-agentive shame (victim shame, oppression shame), by linking them to an ‘anepistemic’ model of the experience and impact of human failing. One of the most vexing aspects of those group-centred views remains how susceptivity to such shame ought to be understood. This contribution focuses on how a basic familiarity with adversity, in everyday life, may open individuals up to these forms of shame. If, per group-centred views, non-agentive shame is importantly driven by participation in social practices with others, a better understanding of the impact of adversity on individuals’ lives may offer a way of explaining how embodied experience instils in individuals a need for such participation. The upshot is an understanding of the individual’s susceptivity to non-agentive shame, which affords it the same legitimacy as more conventional notions of shame.
