Participation in leisure activities and quality of life of people with psychosis in England: a multi-site cross-sectional study

BackgroundLeisure activities can improve quality of life in the general population. For people with psychosis, negative symptoms (e.g. being unmotivated, difficulty in sticking with activities) are often a barrier to engaging in social leisure activities. However, we do not know if participation in leisure activities is associated with quality of life in this group and, whether psychosocial interventions should aim to increase leisure activities.AimThis study investigates participation in social leisure activities of people with psychosis and whether their participation is associated with better quality of life.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted in 6 NHS mental health trusts. Adults aged 18–65 (N = 533) with a diagnosis of a psychosis-related condition (ICD-10 F20-29) were recruited from outpatient secondary mental health services. Several measures were used including an adapted version of the Time Use Survey (TUS), the Social contacts assessment (SCA) and Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life (MANSA). A Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to explore the relationships between participation in leisure activities and quality of life, and whether social contacts mediated the link.ResultsParticipants attended an average of 2.42 (SD = 1.47) leisure activities in the last 7 days. Their quality of life increased with the number of leisure activities they attended. Participation in leisure activities was positively associated with quality of life in people with psychosis (B = 0.104, SE = 0.051, p = 0.042, 95% CI [0.003 to 0.204]). Leisure activities predicted social contacts, but the link between social contacts and the quality of life was not significant. After controlling for sociodemographic factors, being female and unemployed were negatively linked with quality of life (B = − 0.101, SE = 0.048, p = 0.036, 95% CI [− 0.196 to − 0.006; B = − 0.207, SE = 0.050, p = 0.001, 95% CI [− 0.305 to − 0.108, respectively].ConclusionPeople with psychosis who attend more leisure activities have a higher quality of life. Quality of life was lower amongst female and unemployed participants who attended leisure activities. Intervention which helps improve participation in leisure activities may be beneficial for people with psychosis.Trial registration number ISRCTN15815862.

Participation in social leisure activities may benefit mental health particularly among individuals that lack social connectedness at work or school

Purpose Workplace and study environments generally provide opportunities for social connectedness, however, not all individuals in such settings are equally well connected. It is possible that potential mental health benefits of participation in social leisure activities may be greater for individuals that lack social connectedness through a workplace or study environment. This study aims to examine if the association between social leisure activities and mental health is moderated by the degree of social connectedness at work/school. Design/methodology/approach Data stem from 2,406 adults (age range 16-64 years old) from The Danish Mental Health and Well-Being Survey 2016. Validated scales were used to measure mental well-being and depression/anxiety symptoms. Multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted. Findings Participation in social leisure activities (i.e. participation in community/social groups such as a sports association, art club, book club, running group, card game club, cultural or political group) was positively associated with mental well-being and negatively associated with depression/anxiety symptoms. The associations were stronger among individuals feeling less socially connected at work/school and strongest among individuals that were unemployed or not enrolled in education. Originality/value Mental health promotion strategies may focus on promoting social leisure activities especially among unemployed or otherwise socially isolated groups, as well as among individuals that are not well connected at their workplace or school. Workplaces and schools may also monitor employee/student social connectedness and potentially intervene accordingly.

A Study on the Influence of Social Leisure Activities on the Progression to the Stage of Frailty in Korean Seniors.

In this study, we performed a logistic regression analysis according to the frequency of participation in social leisure activities (education, clubs, social groups, volunteer activities, religious activities, and senior citizens’ welfare center use) by men and women aged ≥ 65 years. We investigated the frequency of participation in social leisure activities and their association with the level of frailty (health vs. pre-frailty, health vs. frailty, pre-frailty vs. frailty). This study included 10,297 older adults (men: 4128, women: 6169) who participated in the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans, and were divided into three groups (healthy, pre-frailty, and frailty). Five frailty index components were used to measure the frailty level. There was a positive relationship between the elderly’s religious activities, four times a week, from the healthy stage to the frailty stage, from the healthy stage to the pre-frailty stage, and from the pre-frailty stage to the frailty. In addition, positive associations emerged in leisure activities and club activities, respectively, from the healthy stage to the frailty stage (once a week, respectively). Positive association also emerged from the healthy stage to the pre-frailty and from the pre-frailty stage to the frailty stage (once a month to once in a two-week period).

Predictors of social leisure activities in older Europeans with and without multimorbidity.

Older people spend much time participating in leisure activities, such as taking part in organized activities and going out, but the extent of participation may differ according to both individual and environmental resources available. Chronic health problems become more prevalent at higher ages and likely necessitate tapping different resources to maintain social participation. This paper compares predictors of participation in social leisure activities between older people with and those without multimorbidity. The European Project on Osteoarthritis (EPOSA) was conducted in Germany, UK, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Sweden (N = 2942, mean age 74.2 (5.2)). Multivariate regression was used to predict social leisure participation and degree of participation in people with and without multimorbidity. Fewer older people with multimorbidity participated in social leisure activities (90.6 %), compared to those without multimorbidity (93.9 %). The frequency of participation was also lower compared to people without multimorbidity. Higher socioeconomic status, widowhood, a larger network of friends, volunteering, transportation possibilities and having fewer depressive symptoms were important for (the degree of) social leisure participation. Statistically significant differences between the multimorbidity groups were observed for volunteering and driving a car, which were more important predictors of participation in those with multimorbidity. In contrast, self-reported income appeared more important for those without multimorbidity, compared to those who had multimorbidity. Policies focusing on social (network of friends), physical (physical performance) and psychological factors (depressive symptoms) and on transportation possibilities are recommended to enable all older people to participate in social leisure activities.
