Survey of awareness and beliefs about cancer (ABC) in Tehran Province, Iran

IntroductionKnowledge, attitudes, and practices are essential measures for planning and evaluating cancer control programs. Little is known about these in Iran.MethodsWe conducted a population-based interview survey of adults aged 30–70 using the Farsi version of the Awareness and Beliefs about Cancer questionnaire in the capital province of Tehran, Iran, 2019. We calculated weighted estimates of levels of cancer knowledge, attitudes, and practices to allow for different selection probabilities and nonresponse. We used multivariate logistic regression to understand demographic factors associated with bowel, cervix, and breast screening practices.ResultsWe interviewed 736 men and 744 women. The mean number of recalled cancer warning signs was less than one; 57.7% could not recall any cancer warning signs. Participants recognized 5.6 out of 11 early cancer warning signs and 8.8 of 13 cancer risk factors. Most (82.7%) did not know that HPV infection was a cancer risk factor. Approximately, half had negative attitudes towards cancer treatment, but over 80% had positive attitudes towards the effectiveness of screening for improving survival. Colorectal, breast, and cervical screening rates were 24%, 42%, and 49%, respectively. Higher socioeconomic status increased the odds of taking up screening for cancer. Women aged 60–70 were less likely to report taking up breast and cervical screening than younger women.DiscussionThe Iranian population has poor awareness and negative attitudes about cancer, and participation in screening programs is low. Public awareness and early detection of cancer should be promoted in Iran.

External validation of the colorectal cancer risk score LiFeCRC using food frequency questions in the HUNT study

PurposeTo mitigate the increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence globally and prevent CRC at the individual level, individual lifestyle information needs to be easily translated into CRC risk assessment. Several CRC risk prediction models exist and their clinical usefulness depends on their ease of use. Our objectives were to assess and externally validate the LiFeCRC score in our independent, unselected population and to investigate the use of simpler food frequency measurements in the score.MethodsIncidental colon and rectal cancer cases were compared to the general population among 78,580 individuals participating in a longitudinal health study in Norway (HUNT). Vegetable, dairy product, processed meat and sugar/confectionary consumption was scored based on food frequency. The LiFeCRC risk score was calculated for each individual.ResultsOver a median of 10 years following participation in HUNT, colon cancer was diagnosed in 1355 patients and rectal cancer was diagnosed in 473 patients. The LiFeCRC score using food frequencies demonstrated good discrimination in CRC overall (AUC 0.77) and in sex-specific models (AUC men 0.76 and women 0.77) in this population also including individuals ≥ 70 years and patients with diabetes. It performed somewhat better in colon (AUC 0.80) than in rectal cancer (AUC 0.72) and worked best for female colon cancer (AUC 0.81).ConclusionReadily available clinical variables and food frequency questions in a modified LiFeCRC score can identify patients at risk of CRC and may improve primary prevention by motivating to lifestyle change or participation in the CRC screening programme.

The predictors of voluntary participation in pulmonary tuberculosis screening program: a study in a suburban community of southern Thailand.

The health belief model (HBM), baseline health condition, and sociocultural factors impact the decision to participate in a tuberculosis screening program. This cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out among the "Kao Taew" community dwellers aged 18 years and above, who voluntarily underwent the provided pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) screening by chest radiographs (CXRs). The level of individual HBM domain perception, attitudes toward PTB prevention, and regularity of PTB prevention practices by the participants were evaluated. The significantly associated or correlated factors such as demographic characteristics, individual HBM domain perception, and attitudes toward PTB prevention with the regularity of PTB prevention practices from the univariate analysis were further analyzed by multiple linear regression (p < 0.05) to determine the independent significant predictors of PTB prevention practices. Among 311 participants comprising 65% women, 57.9% aged ≥ 65 years and 67.2% had an underlying disease. The study participants had a high level of perception of HBM domains but a low level of perception of the barrier. In addition, a high level of attitudes toward PTB prevention and a high regularity of PTB prevention practices were found. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the perceived benefits of PTB screening [Beta = 0.20 (0.04, 0.36) p = 0.016] and acquiring underlying diseases [Beta = 1.06 (0.38, 1.73), p = 0.002] were significant predictors for PTB prevention practices, while belief in Islam was a reverse predictor [Beta = -0.84 (-1.47, -0.21), p = 0.010]. The level of perception of the individual domain of HBM, health status, and religious belief significantly predicted voluntary participation in PTB screening programs. Careful consideration by integration of the relevant health psychology, physical, and sociocultural factors is crucial for planning a health screening program.

Demographics and socioeconomic determinants of health predict continued participation in a CT lung cancer screening program

PurposeWe developed machine learning (ML) models to assess demographic and socioeconomic status (SES) variables’ value in predicting continued participation in a low-dose CT lung cancer screening (LCS) program. Materials and Methods480 LCS subjects were retrospectively examined for the following outcomes: (#1) no follow-up (single LCS scan) vs. multiple follow-ups (220 and 260 subjects respectively) and (#2) absent or delayed (>1 month past the due date) follow-up vs timely follow-up (356 and 124 subjects respectively). We quantified the contributions of 14 socioeconomic, demographic, and clinical predictors to LCS adherence, and validated and compared prediction performances of multivariate logistic regression (MLR), support vector machine (SVM) and shallow neural network (NN) models. ResultsFor outcome #1, age, sex, race, insurance status, personal cancer history, and median household income were found to be associated with returning for follow-ups. For outcome #2, age, sex, race, and insurance status were significant predictor of absent/delayed LCS follow-up. Across 5-fold cross-validation, the MLR model achieved an average AUC of 0.732 (95% CI, 0.661-0.803) for outcome #1 and 0.633 (95% CI, 0.602-0.664) for outcome #2 and is the model with best predictive performance overall, whereas NN and SVM tended to overfit training data and fell short on testing data performance for either outcome. ConclusionsWe identified significant predictors of LCS adherence, and our ML models can predict which subjects are at higher risk of receiving no or delayed LCS follow-ups. Our results could inform data-driven interventions to engage vulnerable populations and extend the benefits of LCS.

HPV and Cervical Cancer Awareness and Screening Practices among Migrant Women: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review explores the barriers and facilitators that migrant women face globally. The review explored a range of studies conducted in various countries, including the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It also specialises in the experiences of migrant women living in Sydney, Australia, and women living in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), UAE. Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent form of cancer among women worldwide. It is the fourteenth most common cancer among women in Australia and the fourth most common cancer in the UAE. Despite the availability of vaccinations and cervical screening initiatives in many countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and the UAE, migrant women living in these countries continue to experience considerable health gaps when accessing cervical cancer screening services. Addressing these disparities is crucial to ensuring everyone has equal healthcare access. An electronic search was conducted using three databases to identify articles published between 2011 and 2021. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research studies were included in the search. The identified factors were classified into categories of barriers and facilitators of cervical screening uptake, which were then sub-categorized. This narrative review examines the awareness of cervical cancer and screening behaviours, attitudes, barriers, and facilitators associated with cervical cancer screening. According to the study, several factors pose significant obstacles for migrant women worldwide, particularly those living in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Sydney, Australia, and Emirati and non-Emirati women (migrant women) residing in RAK when it comes to undergoing cervical cancer screening. These barriers include inadequate knowledge and emotional, cultural, religious, psychological, and organisational factors. On the other hand, social support, awareness campaigns, and the availability of screening services were found to promote the uptake of cervical cancer screening. The findings from this review suggest that healthcare providers should adopt culturally sensitive approaches to enhance awareness and encourage participation in screening programs among migrant women. Based on the findings of this narrative review, it is strongly suggested that healthcare providers and policymakers prioritise developing culturally sensitive screening initiatives for migrant women. It is essential to address the psychological and emotional barriers that prevent migrant women from accessing screening services. This can be accomplished by offering education and awareness campaigns in their native languages and implementing a community-based approach to encourage social support and increase awareness of cervical cancer and screening services. Furthermore, healthcare providers and organisations should provide educational tools that address common misconceptions based on cultural and religious factors that prevent women from accessing screening services.

Evaluating Opt-In Vaginal Human Papillomavirus Self-Sampling: Participation Rates and Detection of High-Grade Lesions (CIN2+) among Unscreened Japanese Women Aged 30-39.

Cervical cancer incidence is increasing among Japanese women, which is partly attributed to low screening rates. This study examined the implementation of opt-in human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling among Japanese women aged 30-39 years who had not undergone cervical cancer screening, focusing on those requiring preconception care. The responses to the opt-in approach and effectiveness in detecting cervical squamous intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or worse (CIN2+) were evaluated. Participants used the Evalyn® Brush for self-sampling, with HPV testing conducted using the Cobas 4800 system (version 2.2.0). Out of 3489 eligible, unscreened women from four municipalities in Fukui Prefecture, only 10.6% (370/3489) requested the self-sampling kit. Of these, 77.3% (286/370) returned the kit (HPV testing rate: 8.2% (286/3489)). The HPV positivity rate was 13.7% (39/285), yet only 61.5% (24/39) of those with positive HPV results proceeded to cytology testing. Subsequently, three cases of CIN2+ were detected (10.5/1000). While this study demonstrated a reasonable kit return rate and indicated the capability of opt-in HPV self-sampling to detect CIN2+ cases in unscreened women, the low ordering rate of kits and suboptimal compliance for follow-up cytology testing highlight significant challenges. The findings suggest the need for more effective strategies to enhance participation in cervical cancer screening programs.

Relationship Between Menopausal Symptoms, Cancer Screening Behaviors, and Religion Attitudes of Women in the Climacteric Period: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Although it is known that religion is used to cope with health problems, there is a lack of information about the effect of religion on menopausal symptoms and cancer screening attitudes of climacteric women. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the religious attitudes of women in the climacteric period and their attitudes toward menopausal symptoms and cancer screening. This was a cross-sectional study of 381 women in the climacteric period in the Central Anatolia region of Türkiye. Data collection form, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), OK-Religious Attitude Scale (ORAS), and attitude for cancer screening (short form) (ASCS) were used to collect data. Correlation analysis assessed the relationship between MRS, ORAS, and ASCS. There was a low positive correlation between women's ORAS mean score (35.19 ± 4.80) and MRS mean score (12.68 ± 7.24) (r = 0.284, P < 0.001). There was no statistically significant relationship between the mean ORAS scores of the women and the mean ASCS scores (64.59 ± 10.47) (r = 0.089, P > 0.05). Women who experienced more severe menopausal symptoms had stronger religious attitudes. Women's religious attitudes did not affect their attitudes toward cancer screening. It is therefore recommended that health professionals organize counseling and training activities to protect and improve the health of menopausal women and increase their participation in screening and treatment programs.

What Do Family Physicians Think of Colorectal Cancer Screening?

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate family physician (FP) practice in terms of CRC screening and recommendations for increasing participation in screening programs.&#x0D; Methods: The population in this descriptive study, conducted between 15 June and 15 July, 2019, consisted of 325 (78.9%) FPs working in Samsun, Turkey and consenting to participate. A questionnaire prepared by the authors based on the relevant literature was applied at face-to-face interviews. &#x0D; Results: The mean age of the FPs was 44.6±0.4 years, and their mean time in service was 19.7±0.54 years. The most common suggestions were “having a dedicated member of staff of cancer screenings in family health centers”, “public education”, and “reducing the numbers of patients registered with FPs”. FPs most frequently thought that “public education”, “health education on the social media and TV”, and “reminders issued to patients” might be effective in increasing CRC screening. The methods they regarded as having the least effect were “pamphlets”, “reminder leaflets”, and “informative texts in newspapers”.&#x0D; Conclusions: Screening programs should be carried out in a multidisciplinary manner, including not only physicians but also other health professionals such as health educators, with a team-based approach.

"We're the very bottom, so it's going to be hard for you to 'catch any fish' around here…" understanding vulnerable Greenlanders' perspectives on cancer and barriers to screening in Denmark- A qualitative study.

Cancer is a major global health concern. Unfortunately, Indigenous populations such as Greenlanders living in Denmark, face significant disparities in cancer risk, incidence, diagnosis, care quality, and outcomes. In Denmark, vulnerable Greenlanders face challenges accessing cancer screening. The aim of this study was to explore their perceptions of cancer, barriers to participation in cancer screening, and potential for developing a tailored intervention. This qualitative study was based on participant observations and qualitative interviews. The sample comprised 46 participants from four distinct drop-in centres. Of these, 28 were vulnerable Greenlanders (19 women and 9 men), 9 were staff members (6 women and 3 men), and 6 were relatives (4 women and 2 men). The data were analysed through inductive content analysis. Vulnerable Greenlanders in Denmark believed they were responsible for their own health and were generally satisfied with the healthcare system. However, they found it challenging to manage their own health and many depended on support from others. Fear of cancer and death shaped their attitudes towards screening. For vulnerable Greenlanders in Denmark participation in cancer screening programmes was positively viewed for most but could be challenging. Different intervention ideas raised by the vulnerable Greenlanders, relatives and staff members could guide the development of strategies to increase participation rates.

Axillary Lymphadenopathy after COVID-19 Vaccination: Follow-up for Enlarged Lymph Nodes on MR Imaging.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal MRI characteristic of COVID-19-vaccination-related axillary lymphadenopathy by evaluating the size, T2-weighted signal intensity, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. COVID-19-vaccination-related axillary lymphadenopathy was observed in 90 of 433 health screening program participants on the chest region of whole-body axial MRIs in 2021, as reported in our previous study. Follow-up MRI was performed at an interval of approximately 1 year after the second vaccination dose from 2022 to 2023. The diameter, signal intensity on T2-weighted images, and ADC of the largest enlarged lymph nodes were measured on chest MRI. The values were compared between the post-vaccination MRI and the follow-up MRI, and statistically analyzed. Out of the 90 participants who had enlarged lymph nodes of 5 mm or larger in short axis after the second vaccination dose, 76 participants (45 men and 31 women, mean age: 61 years) were enrolled in the present study. The median short- and long-axis diameter of the enlarged lymph nodes was 7 mm and 9 mm for post-vaccination MRI and 4 mm and 6 mm for follow-up MRI, respectively. The median signal intensity relative to the muscle on T2-weighted images decreased (5.1 for the initial post-vaccination MRI and 3.6 for the follow-up MRI, P < .0001). The ADC values did not show a notable change and remained in a normal range. The enlarged axillary lymph nodes decreased both in size and in signal intensity on T2-weighted images of follow-up MRI. The ADC remained unchanged. Our findings may provide important information to establish evidence-based guidelines for conducting proper assessment and management of post-vaccination lymphadenopathy.

Prenatal Exposure to Tobacco and Cannabis in Six Race/Ethnicity Groups during the First Three Years after Legalization of Cannabis for Recreational Use in California.

There are known health concerns linked to prenatal tobacco and cannabis exposures. This study aims to objectively determine the level of exposure to tobacco and cannabis in pregnant individuals from six race/ethnicity groups (Black, Hispanic, Asian Indian, Native American, Vietnamese, and White) in the first three years following legalization of recreational marijuana use in 2018 in California. We used a cross-sectional sample of prenatal screening program participants (2018-2020) from southern and central California (N = 925). Exposures were estimated by a lab analysis of cotinine (tobacco) and 11-hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (OH-THC, cannabis) in banked serum. Disparities in tobacco exposure were evident, with Black subjects experiencing the highest smoking rate (16%) followed by Native American (10%) and White (8%) subjects, and ≤2% among Hispanic, Asian Indian, and Vietnamese subjects. Environmental tobacco exposure generally showed a similar pattern of exposure to tobacco smoking across race/ethnicity groups. Cannabis detection ranged from 5% among Hispanic subjects to 12% and 13% among White and Black subjects, respectively, and was higher among tobacco users and those exposed to environmental tobacco smoke than those with no cotinine detected. Tobacco and cannabis exposure were generally greatest in younger subjects and those with indices of a lower economic status; however, among Black subjects, cannabis exposure was greatest in older subjects and those with a higher socioeconomic status. Race/ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic factors can inform targeting of high-exposure groups for intervention.

Impact of health-related behavioral factors on participation in a cervical cancer screening program: the lifelines population-based cohort

BackgroundRegular participation in cervical cancer screening is critical to reducing mortality. Although certain sociodemographic factors are known to be associated with one-time participation in screening, little is known about other factors that could be related to regular participation. Therefore, this study evaluated the association between health-related behavioral factors and regular participation in cervical cancer screening.MethodsThe Lifelines population-based cohort was linked to data for cervical cancer screening from the Dutch Nationwide Pathology Databank. We included women eligible for all four screening rounds between 2000 and 2019, classifying them as regular (4 attendances), irregular (1–3 attendances), and never participants. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association between behavioral factors and participation regularity, with adjustment made for sociodemographic factors.ResultsOf the 48,325 included women, 55.9%, 35.1%, and 9% were regular, irregular, and never screening participants. After adjustment for sociodemographic factors, the likelihood of irregular or never screening participation was increased by smoking, obesity, marginal or inadequate sleep duration, alcohol consumption and low physical activity, while it was decreased by hormonal contraception use.ConclusionAn association exists between unhealthy behavioral factors and never or irregular participation in cervical cancer screening.

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to breast cancer screening among female Jordanian university employees: A cross-sectional study

IntroductionTo improve participation in breast screening programs, the level of knowledge about BC, attitudes, and practices of women in different sections of society must be understood. This study aimed to measure the level of knowledge of BC risk factors, signs and symptoms and determine current mammography practices among female employees at Jordanian universities. MethodsA cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on female employees at Jordanian government universities. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire that included: sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge of BC risk factors, knowledge of BC symptoms and knowledge, attitude and practice of mammography as an early detection method. ResultsA total of 362 participants completed the questionnaire. Overall, 174 scored ≥50% correct answers regarding BC risk factors, while 231 scored ≥50% correct answers regarding BC signs and symptoms. Half of the participants (n = 184, 50.8%) understood mammography to be an early BC detection method. Among those participants, 95 (51.6%) were eligible for screening and 39 (21.2%) had had a previous mammogram. The main reason for not engaging in mammography was the absence of BC signs and symptoms (37.2%). Profession, educational level and family history of BC were associated with increased knowledge of BC risk factors, signs and symptoms (p = 0.01). Lecturers in medical faculties exhibited the highest level of knowledge about mammography compared to participants in other professions (p = 0.02). ConclusionOnly 79 participants had good to excellent knowledge about BC. Participants’ profession was the major indicator for awareness of BC and mammography as an early detection method. Implications for practiceThe findings of this study reinforce the importance of providing BC educational programs for university employees in Jordan to increase awareness of BC and mammography.

Spatial variability in socio-demographic factors affecting participation in the Australian national bowel cancer screening program

ObjectivesThe objective of this paper is to analyse the socio-demographic and spatial patterns associated with bowel cancer screening in Australia. Despite the importance of screening in reducing mortality via early intervention, it remains the case that overall screening rates are uneven between different socio-demographic groups and geographic regions. Notwithstanding this, there is limited knowledge in Australia regarding the interplay between socio-demographics and geography in relation to bowel cancer screening. Thus, this paper explores the socio-demographic and spatial patterns of screening participation across Australian regions to better inform public health policy and programs. Study designThis is a nationwide ecological study based on aggregate spatial data. MethodsAn ecological study is conducted using bowel cancer screening rates and selected socio-demographic data measured at the Statistical Area 3 level. Geographically weighted regression software is used to conduct global and spatial regression analysis. ResultsThe global regression results show that higher rates of screening participation were associated with employment/education disengagement and volunteering while in contrast, lower rates of participation were associated with higher rates of indigenous populations, people with chronic health conditions, and people with poor English skills. Considering the spatial analysis, the analysis shows that once the spatial non-stationarity in the data is considered the influence of the variables shown to be significant in the global model, has significant spatial variability. ConclusionFrom a public health perspective, addressing shortfalls in bowel cancer screening participation is an important priority. In order to understand differences in participation rates it is important to consider both socio-demographic factors as well as the geographic or spatial distribution of these factors.

The Effect of Multimodal Interventions Regarding Early Cervical Cancer Diagnosis on the Women's Knowledge, Attitude and Participation in Cervical Screening Program.

The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of multimodal interventions on women's knowledge, attitude, and behavior towards the participation in the cervical screening test. A quasi-experimental design is executed with a multi-stage sampling of 300 women residing in rural India. Various multimodal interventions, including a documentary film, face-to-face meetings, written booklets, reminder letters, SMS, and telephone calls, are used to motivate the women for cervical cancer screening. Following the interventions, 99% of the participants became aware of cervical cancer and increased their participation in screening from 3.0 % (Pretest) to 79.9% (Posttest). Three reminders have been sent to the participants, throughout the intervention period which has led to a considerable rise in the participants' willingness to participate in screening, hiking from 58% to 79.9%. The Pap smear test results have shown that: among 288 women, 21 have Typical Malignant cells on their cervix, and two women have been diagnosed with cervical cancer (Stage 1a and Stage 1b). The findings of the study indicate that utilizing diverse interventions in health education alters women's behavior, enhances the compliance of cervical cancer screening, and ultimately helps to prevent life-threatening risks.

Approach of Female Patients to Screening Tests in the Prevention of HPV-Related Cervical Cancer and the Effect of Physician's Recommendation

The aim of our study was to evaluate the cervical cancer screening test status of female patients between the ages of 30-65 who applied to the family medicine outpatient clinic for any reason. If they have not had the screening test, it is aimed to provide information and relevant education to the patients about the test, and then to include the patient in the national cervical cancer screening program by improving the patient's knowledge and awareness and also to contribute to preventive health care, which is our principle of family medicine specialty. Our study was prospective observational research in which evaluating the status of having a cervical cancer screening test after appropriate information. Patients were asked about their cervical cancer screening test status, and all participants were informed about this issue, and the patients who did not get tested were contacted again by phone one month later to evaluate the status of taking the test. A unique structured questionnaire form was used for the study. A total of 146 women who agree to participate voluntarily were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 44.39±9.26 years and 64.4% had not gone through menopause. Of the patients, 87% were married, 48.6% were university graduates, and 49.3% were not employed. 66.4% of patients had had a cervical cancer screening test at least once, while 28.9% of them had been tested more than five years ago, 2.1% did not remember when they had the test. Of those who had the screening test, 57.7% had the test for health check-up, 73.5% of those who did not get tested they did not have a test because they did not need or had any complaints. 73.3% of the patients had not received training on the screening tests. 51.3% of those receiving training stated that they received training from the hospital and 28.2% from the family health center. After being informed about the cervical cancer screening test, 58.9% (n=86) of the patients considered having the test. It was determined that 26.6% of the patients (n=79) who did not have the screening test in accordance with the screening program and who never tested, had the screening test done after being informed. Consider the average age of the patients, it was determined that their participation in the cervical cancer screening program was quite low. The fact that more than half of the participants considered having a screening test after the physician's recommendation and training, and the fact that one quarter of the participants who were due to have the screening test after one month had the screening test, shows the importance of the physician's recommendation and education.

Bridging social work and health care: The example of Integrated Diabetes Intervention in Tingbjerg

Abstract Background In Denmark, type 2 diabetes (T2D) is on the rise particularly among people in vulnerable positions and of low socioeconomic status. People with T2D often have a complex course of treatment that includes continuous contact with different parts of the healthcare system. For the most vulnerable groups however, navigating diabetes related health services can be challenging and may be a decisive obstacle. Low socioeconomic status is associated with a low degree of participation in screening programmes and low compliance with treatment and rehabilitation. Tackling this problem requires collaborative action across the social and the health sector, a challenge that remains unsolved within the field of diabetes. Thus, coordinated diabetes initiatives are required to ensure that people in vulnerable positions achieve optimal benefits from diabetes treatment and rehabilitation. Methods This presentation will introduce Integrated Diabetes Intervention in Tingbjerg (IDIT), a holistic diabetes intervention with the dual aim of a) strengthening the motivation and capacity of residents in vulnerable positions to participate in diabetes-related treatment initiatives and b) strengthening collaboration and partnerships in the field of diabetes between key stakeholders in the municipality, the region, and the civil society. IDIT works across the social and the health sector to bridge the gap between the two and offer coherent and integrated treatment and rehabilitation based on the need of the individual. Findings Based on findings from one year's intervention period (still ongoing), this presentation will discuss the potentials and challenges associated with integrating social work and health care for populations in vulnerable positions. Thus, it showcases how a Supersetting approach to diabetes care may provide sustainable solutions to tackle low compliance with treatment and rehabilitation among people in vulnerable positions

Cancer risk factors and access to cancer screening for people experiencing homelessness

Abstract Background People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are significantly more likely to develop and die from cancer than the housed population. Major factors influencing outcome are timely detection and treatment, which especially populations with complex needs lack access to. This scoping review outlines cancer risk factors among PEH and their facilitators and barriers to access cancer prevention. Methods Databases were searched in Embase, Global Index Medicus, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in February 2023. OpenGrey and Google were searched for grey literature. Peer-reviewed and grey literature on cancer risk factors among PEH and factors facilitating or hampering access to cancer prevention services were eligible and synthesized narratively. Results We included 40 articles published between 1998 and 2023. Most eligible studies were conducted in the US (n = 34; 85%), indicating a paucity of data from other regions. More than one-third of the studies were published between 2018 and 2023, suggesting a recent increase in research interest. Access to cancer screening was associated with factors on the individual level (e.g., psychological and physical factors), interpersonal level (e.g., practical support), system level (e.g., continuous care), policy level (e.g., interventions to facilitate access). Most eligible studies reported high tobacco use among PEH. Overall, cancer risk factors among PEH have been less studied and require further research. Conclusions Mapping the evidence on cancer risk factors as well as barriers to accessing preventive services in this underserved population is a necessary step to create evidence-based public health recommendations: (a) Due to higher cancer risk factors among PEH, preventive strategies tailored to this population are necessary; (b) innovative strategies such as patient navigation may be viable to increase participation in screening programs; (c) investment in research within the European context is necessary. Key messages • Findings suggest that a system-wide approach is needed to address the increased risks and facilitate timely uptake of cancer screening to ensure sustainable use of cancer prevention services in PEH. • Evidence suggests policymakers need to be aware of inequity in access to cancer preventive services among PEH.
