Impact of Religious Affiliation on Clinical Outcomes in Liver Transplant Patients.

While the impact of spirituality as it relates to quality of life post-liver transplant (LT) has been studied, there are limited data showing how religious affiliation impacts objective measures such as survival. The aim of the study is to investigate whether LT recipientswho identified as having a religious affiliation had better clinical outcomes when compared to LT recipientswho did not. Religious affiliation is obtained as part of general demographic information for patients within our institution (options of "choose not to disclose" and "no religious affiliation" are available). Subjects in this retrospective cohort study which conformed with the Declarations of Helsinki and Istanbul were separated into cohorts: LT recipientswho self-reported religious affiliation and LT recipients who did not. All LT recipients between March 2007 and September 2018 who had available information regarding their reported religion were included. Excluded patients included those who received a multi-organ transplant, underwent re-transplantation, received a partial liver graft, and identified as agnostic. Outcomes included 30-day readmission, death, and the composite outcome of re-transplantation/death. In an unadjusted analysis of 378 patients, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for 30-day readmission (OR=1.15, P=0.71), death (HR=0.63, P=0.19), or re-transplantation/death (HR=0.90, P=0.75). In multivariable analysis, adjusting for age at transplant and hospital admittance status when called for transplant, results were similar. We found no statistically significant difference in the outcomes measured between patients with and without self-reported religious affiliation. Further studies into the role of participation in religious activity and the impact of engagement with a religious community should be conducted in the future.

Implementasi Amaliyah Aswaja untuk Meningkatkan Sikap Religius Siswa di SD Islamiyah Magetan

The aim of this research is to examine the implementation of Aswaja practices at SD Islamiyah Magetan in enhancing students' religious attitudes and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors. This study employs a qualitative case study approach. The subjects of this research include the principal, teachers, and students of SD Islamiyah Magetan. Data collection techniques used are interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis techniques follow the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that Aswaja education at SD Islamiyah Magetan is systematically and comprehensively organized, and has a significant impact on enhancing students' religious attitudes. The curriculum is designed to ensure that students not only understand but also practice the taught amaliyah according to their grade level. The religious environment at the school is also fostered through daily routines and supportive extracurricular activities. The improvement in students' religious attitudes is evident from the increased memorization of verses and prayers, student participation in religious activities, and students' awareness of worship. Supporting factors for the implementation of Aswaja practices at SD Islamiyah Magetan include the teachers' deep understanding of Aswaja teachings, a conducive religious atmosphere, and collaboration between school and home. Inhibiting factors include the lack of facilities and infrastructure, and the lack of innovative teaching methods and media. This research is expected to contribute to the enhancement of religious education at SD Islamiyah Magetan and other schools with similar religious education programs, thereby shaping students with strong religious attitudes.

Cognitive Impairment and Social Determinants of Health Among Indigenous Women.

Cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) pose significant challenges for Indigenous populations, necessitating urgent research. Limited evidence suggests that high rates of ADRD among Indigenous peoples are associated with social determinants of health (SDOH), such as education, income, health literacy, religion, and social engagement. Collaborating with a Northern Plains tribe, participants were recruited 123 self-identified Indigenous women aged 40-70 through a comprehensive recruitment strategy. Employing the SDOH framework, the research assessed cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease knowledge (ADK), utilizing the Ascertain Dementia 8 and Alzheimer's disease knowledge scales (ADK-30). The investigation examined the relationships between selected SDOH variables and cognitive impairment status. More than half of the participants showed signs of cognitive impairment, which correlated with lower income and education levels. Increased knowledge about Alzheimer's disease, particularly in terms of treatment management and its life impact subscales, was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment. Conversely, higher levels of depressive symptoms and participation in religious activities were linked to increased odds of cognitive impairment. The findings underscore the importance of culturally grounded tools and SDOH frameworks tailored to Indigenous contexts in addressing ADRD disparities. Future research should integrate historical and cultural factors to advance health equity within Indigenous communities, ultimately mitigating the impact of ADRD and promoting overall well-being.

The objective of this research is to explore the strategies employed by parents in Tanjungrejo Village to instill religious values in their children, aiming to prevent adolescent delinquency. Religious values are considered crucial for providing moral guidance to adolescents. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, the study utilizes observation, interviews, and documentation for data collection. Data analysis involves reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions from the gathered information. Findings indicate that parents utilize various tactics, such as setting personal examples, encouraging participation in religious activities like Quranic studies, and maintaining open communication with their children. Religious values serve as a strong moral foundation capable of influencing adolescent decision-making. Nevertheless, parents encounter challenges, particularly concerning their children's reliance on technology. Managing children's exposure to inappropriate content and ensuring the primacy of religious values in education pose significant hurdles for parents. Despite these challenges, parental involvement in instilling religious values is deemed essential in preventing adolescent delinquency. However, addressing influences like technology requires a careful approach to educating children in the digital age. Parents' recognition of their role in their children's education and collaborative efforts to foster an environment supportive of religious values could be crucial in preventing adolescent delinquency in Tanjungrejo Village.

Effect of Interpersonal Communication on the Religious Behavior of Buddhist Monastery Manggala Ratna East Lampung

This study was motivated by the problem of Buddhist religious behavior at the Manggala Ratna Buddhist Monastery in East Lampung, which includes a lack of activity in rituals and prayer, lack of enthusiasm for practicing religious teachings, lack of participation in religious activities, lack of a sense of obligation and awareness of the implementation of religious teachings, and lack of obedience to religious teachings.
 The research methodology uses a quantitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection was done through a closed questionnaire that included statements about interpersonal communication variables (X) and religious behavior (Y). Data analysis includes validity test, reliability test, normality test, descriptive analysis, simple linear regression analysis, and hypothesis testing.
 The results showed that the influence of interpersonal communication on the religious behavior of Buddhists in Manggala Ratna Buddhist Monastery in East Lampung was 37.3%, while 62.7% was influenced by other factors not examined in this study. Regression analysis shows that there is a significant influence, with a significance value (sig) on the tcount of 7.032> ttable 1.663. Therefore, it can be concluded that interpersonal communication, especially in terms of openness, has a positive influence on the religious behavior of Buddhists at Manggala Ratna Buddhist Monastery in East Lampung.

Instillation of students' moral values through habituation of religious programs at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) Wonogiri, Indonesia

Instilling students' moral values through religious programs at MAN Wonogiri is an educational effort that aims to form strong character and noble characters in students. This study explores how to instill the values of discipline and honesty in students through habituation of religious programs and how supporting and inhibiting factors in instilling the values of discipline and honesty in students through habituation of religious programs at MAN Wonogiri. This research is qualitative research on phenomenology. Data collection techniques in this study use observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects in this study were the Principals and teachers of aqidah akhlak subjects. Data analysis techniques in this study use analysis models according to Miles and Huberman, namely collection, reduction, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this study highlight efforts to instill the value of discipline and honesty in students through religious programs at MAN Wonogiri. These efforts include providing an understanding of disciplinary material in Islamic teachings, the use of punishment and rewards in the process of developing student discipline and providing good examples. Contributing factors include teachers' active participation in religious activities and the motivation of fellow students, while constraints include limited space and students deliberately hiding during religious activities.

Youth Participation in Religious Activities and Nation Character Development in Indonesia

Almost every religion involves youth participation in activities; signifying growing awareness of the need for youths in the continuity of religious practices and vice versa, as young people depend on religion as a basis for good character in facing the challenges of their time. This study examines youth participation in understanding religion, especially Islam, and why participating in religious activities establishes itself in the context of migratory or young migrants. In doing so, this study explores the what, why and how forms of youth participation in such religious activities contribute to the development of national character. Further to this, youth participation in the Hijrah Fest is in line with the theory of a relational development system where relationships that occur between individuals such as youths in particular strengthen each other to form an independent hijrah community. Using qualitative methods, this study found that the Hijrah Fest is a social capital for the community, whose activities encourage many young people to be independent, work together and develop good morals. This is in line with the state's goal of developing the character of Indonesian youth. Hijrah Fest is also supports the vision of the Indonesian government in realizing a sovereign, independent youth personalities through such collaboration. A 10-YEAR SCOPING REVIEW OF PARTICIPATION IN SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AMONG HEALTHY OLDER ADULTS

This scoping review aims to explore the current evidence regarding participation in social activities among healthy older adults and the types of social activities. The Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases were used to search for potential studies published from 2013 to 2023, and 24 studies met our inclusion criteria. The findings revealed variability in the types and number of social activities utilized in the included studies. This review has identified three main categories of social activities: formal social activities, informal social activities, and online social activities. Formal social activities can be further categorized into four sub-categories: participation in religious activities, participation in senior citizen clubs or senior centers, participation in education classes or programs, and participation in community groups, associations, or organizations. On the contrary, informal social activities can be categorized into seven sub-categories: connecting with family or relatives, connecting with friends, connecting with the community, participating in leisure activities, participating in outdoor activities, participating in indoor activities, and participating in physical activities. In conclusion, this review has identified critical and up-to-date evidence on social activities participated in by healthy older adults. With the growing attention on promoting successful aging, the results gathered from this review can significantly inform various community stakeholders in planning strategies to cultivate social participation among this population group.

KOMITMEN KEAGAMAAN KOMUNITAS MUSLIM TIONGHOA: STUDI KASUS PADA LEMBAGA PERSATUAN ISLAM TIONGHOA INDONESIA KOTA SURABAYA

This study aims to explore the religious cases in PITI Surabaya from two different perspectives related to religious motives. According to the perspective of the facilitator, the majority of the Chinese Muslim community enter and learn Islam because of marriage and personal interests, while the perspective of the congregation shows that they embrace Islam out of self-awareness and repentance. The researcher uses the religious of commitment theory approach through five dimensions to formulate research problems and uses qualitative research methods with an intrinsic case study approach. The results of the study show that the Chinese Muslim community has a deep understanding of religion in terms of doctrine and textual, applying their religious understanding by actively attending mentoring classes, and having a high religious commitment with the effect of changes in their behavior and participation in religious activities at the PITI institution. In addition, the study also examines the religious contributions of the Chinese Muslim community to the surrounding community and the impact of the changes they experience after embracing Islam.

Social capital and women's willingness to pay for safe water access: Evidence from African rural areas

AbstractThis paper investigates the relationship between women willingness to pay for water access and civic participation as social capital dimension. We use a dataset from a survey in three rural districts of Karamoja, one of the poorest regions of Uganda. Our results suggest that civic participation is not a silver bullet to empower women in rural areas; rather, its effect depends on both context and type of participation. In particular, participation in religious activities has a positive role, but only if it is strictly anchored to the progress of society in terms of gender equality improvement.

Active Engagement and Health Status of Older Malaysians: Evidence from a Household Survey

Malaysia is undergoing rapid age structural shift to becoming an ageing nation by 2030 when 14% of its population will be aged 60 and over. Population ageing strains the healthcare system due to the rapid rise in non-communicable diseases and poses enormous challenges in providing social protection. Health promotion can ameliorate these twin problems through the active engagement of older adults in the labour force and social activities. This paper used data from the 2014 Malaysian Population and Family Survey (MPFS) to study the factors associated with active engagement in social and economic activities, and the health status of older adults. The survey covered a nationally representative sample of 4,039 older Malaysians aged 60 and over. SPSS was used to perform bivariate and multivariate analyses. About one-quarter of older Malaysians are still working, and three-quarters participate in religious activities, but a small proportion is involved in NGO/community activities and regular exercise. Males are more active than females in all these activities. The majority perceived themselves to be in good or moderately good health. Active participation in social, economic, religious, and physical activities was positively associated with health. Given the relatively low level of labour force participation and social activities among older Malaysians, there is a need for intervention strategies to encourage and facilitate the active engagement of older adults to reduce their health problems and increase self-reliance for a better quality of life.

PERAN ORGANISASI REMAS DALAM MENINGKATKAN PARTISIPASI KEGIATAN KEAGAMAAN Di MASYARAKAT (Study di Masjid Baiturrahman Kampung Peundeuy Desa Cicinde Kecamatan Banyusari Kabupaten Karawang)

Researchers are interested in examining the role of squeezes in carrying out religious activities in the local village. The theory used in this research is adaptive strategy theory and observational social learning theory. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological type. The data collection used by the researchers was interviews, observation and documentation data analysis, while the data sources in this study were the administrators and members of the Youth Mosque. The research results obtained by researchers in the field are The strategy of mosque youth in the formation of religious character through habituation to the implementation of routine religious activities is the result of research. The character of youth strategies for social welfare is shaped by habits, such as community service and helping those in need. In order to shape the character of young people, the mosque has a strategy in greeting each other and creating a conducive atmosphere. The obstacle encountered was the lack of interest of young people to participate in all youth activities in the mosque, so motivation and more interesting activities were needed to increase participation in religious activities in the community. The implication of this research is that people can know and understand that organizations are an important tool for improving people's quality of life, including social and religious life.

Risk and protective factors associated with health risk behaviours among school learners in Western Cape, South Africa

BackgroundHealth risk behaviour is rife among school learners in the Western Cape province. This paper assesses risk and protective factors related to health risk behaviours among high school learners. Method: Longitudinal data were sourced from 2950, 2675 and 2230 at Time 0, Time 1 and Time 2 among grade 8 learners aged 13–18 years between 2012 and 2013. Health risk behaviours were assessed on alcohol consumption, smoking cannabis in the past six months, and ever having sexual intercourse. The sociodemographic variables examined were age, sex, residence, socioeconomic status (SES), family structure and population group. Contextual variables studied were the feeling of learners about the intervention program, participation in religious activities, paid casual work and school sports. Descriptive statistics, bivariate associations and binary logistic analyses predicting health risk behaviours were carried out using generalized linear mixed models after restructuring the data collected at different time points.ResultHealth risk behaviours increased consistently for alcohol consumption (25.7–42.7%), smoking cannabis (10.4–22.1%) and (22.3–36.0%) engaging in sexual intercourse. Increasing age emerged as a risk factor for all the health risk behaviours: alcohol consumption [OR:1.3 (1.2–1.4), p < 0.001]; smoking cannabis [OR:1.3 (1.2–1.4), p < 0.001] and had sex [OR:1.5 (1.4–1.7), p < 0.001]. Participation in paid casual work also predicted health risk behaviour: alcohol use [OR:1.5 (1.2–1.8), p < 0.001]; smoking cannabis [OR:1.3 (1.0-1.7), p < 0.05] and sex [OR:1.4 (1.1–1.7), p < 0.01]. High SES and feelings about the EPEP programme enhanced alcohol consumption and smoking cannabis. Smoking cannabis was augmented by residing in an urban area. Participation in school sports was associated with increased alcohol consumption and engaging in sexual intercourse. Participation in religious activities was protected against alcohol consumption [OR:0.7 (0.53–0.83), p < 0.001]; and sex [OR: 0.5 (0.4–0.7), p < 0.001]. Being a female and belonging to a coloured population group diminished engaging in sexual intercourse, and the family structure of both parents attenuated involvement in smoking cannabis.ConclusionThe findings of the study on risks and protective factors on health risk behaviours mirror those of school-based programmes in developing countries. Learners who participated in paid work and school sports are at risk of adverse health outcomes. Furthermore, participation in religious practices and family structure roles in attenuating health risk behaviours should be integrated and considered in the school-based intervention programme.

Psychoactive Substance Use Disorder in HIV-Infected Adolescents in Botswana: A Comparison Between the Congenitally Infected and Behaviorally Infected Adolescents.

Substance use is a major obstacle to preventing and managing HIV among adolescents, who account for 30% of new infections in many parts of the world, including Botswana. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of data on adolescent substance use, especially in the region. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the pattern of psychoactive substance use in adolescents living with HIV (ALWHIV). It also aimed to compare and explore the pattern of substance use disorders and associated factors between congenitally infected adolescents (CIAs) and behaviorally infected adolescents (BIAs). Six hundred and thirty-four ALWHIV were interviewed using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the WHO drug questionnaire, and DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorder. The participants' mean age (SD) was 17.69 (1.6) years, with a male predominance (n = 336, 53%), and the majority (n = 411, 64.8%) were CIAs. Alcohol was the most used substance among the participants, with 15.8% admitting to its current use. The BIAs were more likely to have SUD (χ2 = 17.2, P < .01), use more than one substance (χ2 = 20.3, P < .01), and more likely to use all psychoactive substances except for inhalants. In the CIAs, regular participation in religious activities was negatively associated with SUD (AOR = 0.36; 95% CI: 0.17-0.77), while struggling with HIV status acceptance was positively associated with SUD (AOR = 2.54; 95% CI: 1.15-5.61) in the BIAs. This study showed a huge burden and similar pattern of substance use disorders among the ALWHIV in Botswana, as reported elsewhere. It also identified the dissimilarities between the BIAs and CIAs regarding substance-related issues and suggested the need for differentiated care.

Enhancing Well-being of the Married: Investigating Marital Satisfaction, Self-Compassion and Happiness Increasing Strategies

In this research, married individuals’ well-being was investigated in regard to marital satisfaction, self-compassion, happiness increasing strategies. The study group consists of 330 married individuals (213 females and 117 males). Personal Information Form, Flourishing Scale, Satisfaction with Married Life Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, and Happiness Increasing Strategies Scale were used. We conducted Independent T test and linear multiple regression analysis. Results show that there are significant correlations between married individuals’ psychological well-being, marital satisfaction, self-compassion, and happiness increasing strategies. By covering 34% of the total variance; marital satisfaction and self-compassion are significant predictors of married individuals’ psychological well-being. Likewise, by covering 12% of the total variance; happiness increasing strategies (dimensions of desire satisfaction, mental control, and participation in religious activity) are significant predictors of married individuals’ psychological well-being. We elaborated on results based on literature and provided some suggestions for mental health professionals and researchers, also for married individuals.

Does believing in different types of religion affect subjective wellbeing? Analysis of the public data of the Taiwan Social Change Survey.

Previous studies have revealed the impact of objective material conditions and psychological factors, such as the influence of religion on subjective well-being, but have disregarded the role played by differences of religious types formed in Asian cultural and historical contexts. Against this background, the present study aims to examine the association between religious type and subjective wellbeing and its mechanisms - the mediating role of frequency of religious activity and the moderating role of urban-rural areas. This study used Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS) 2018 data for researching. The results show that the discrepancy in the frequency of participation in religious activity caused by different types of religious belief will influence personal wellbeing. Respondents who adhere to institutional religion have a higher frequency of participating in religious activities, which has a positive impact on subjective wellbeing. Moreover, further examination shows that urban-rural areas play an important moderating role: respondents living in urban areas are more inclined to participate in religious activities frequently to gain a sense of wellbeing.

Pilgrimages in Times of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Romania

In 2020, religious celebrations in Romania were greatly affected by restrictions meant to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Easter, the highlight of the Orthodox Christian ritual year, was celebrated in empty churches during the spring lockdown. Participation in religious activities was later progressively permitted. During autumn, pilgrimages were allowed, but only in compliance with strict regulations. This article focuses on the restrictions imposed by public authorities, the solutions found by church representatives, and the faithful’s reaction to the new situation. The Orthodox liturgical year begins in Romania on the 1st of September, marked by a series of pilgrimages, occasioned by feasts for several saints whose relics are venerated in local churches. Some of them, centuries old, attract thousands of people. The celebrations last several days, during which people wait patiently, for hours, to touch the holy relics. In 2020, governmental measures limited participation to local residents, without previous consultation with the church authorities. This caused great discontent. Despite this, the number of pilgrims was not substantially less than in previous years, in large part due to the direct negotiations between the faithful and the local law forces.

Pattern of substance use and substance use disorder in adolescent learners at public secondary schools in Gaborone, Botswana.

IntroductionSubstance use amongst adolescents remains a global public health challenge. The potential negative health outcomes of substance use suggest the need to understand the pattern of use and the associated factors among adolescents. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of substance use, SUDs, and PD and the associated factors in adolescent learners at public schools in Gaborone, Botswana.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted at 13 public secondary schools in Gaborone among 742 students. Assessment tools included the World Health Organization drug questionnaire, DSM-5 interview for SUD, and the General Health Questionnaire-12.ResultsThe mean age (SD) of the participants was 15.26 (1.57) years, and there were more females (55.5%). Over two-fifths (44.6%) of learners reported psychoactive substance use in the past 12 months, and 31.5% meeting DSM 5 criteria for a SUD. Alcohol was the most used psychoactive substance (25.1%). Male gender (AOR = 1.94; 95% CI: 1.26–2.995), having a friend (AOR = 4.27; 95% CI: 2.68–6.78), or father (AOR = 1.87; 95% CI: 1.14–3.04), who uses substance, and higher levels of PD (AOR = 1.09; 95% CI: 1.03–1.17) remained significantly associated with SUD. Regular participation in religious activities negatively correlated with SUD (AOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38–0.96).ConclusionThe high prevalence of substance use and SUDs among in-school adolescents is concerning. Substance use programs need to include family-focused and religious-based therapy and youth empowerment in developing positive peer relationships. Also, they should be integrated with mental health screening to assess comorbid PD.
