A Collaborative Approach to Support Participation in Physical Recreation for Preschool Students with Multiple Disabilities: A Case Series

Aims: To evaluate a collaborative participation-based therapy approach for two preschool students with multiple disabilities from the experience of Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, highlighting the perspective of the physical therapist. Methods: The phases of collaborative participation-based therapy were implemented: (a) collaborative relationships were developed and supported within the IEP teams, (b) collaborative meaningful physical recreation goals were developed for participation at school, (c) strengths and needs assessments using the “Collaborative Process for Action Plans to Achieve Participation Goals” were conducted with IEP teams, (d) participation-based interventions were provided, and (e) goal achievement and processes were evaluated. The use of technology for collaboration was encouraged. The physical therapist kept intervention logs and wrote reflective journal entries. Interventions adhered to COVID-19 regulations. Goal achievement was measured using Goal Attainment Scaling. IEP team members completed questionnaires on their experiences. Results: One student met their goal expectation, and one student exceeded their goal expectation. The students were engaged, and IEP team members’ experiences were positive. Conclusions: The use of participation-based therapy is meaningful, feasible, and acceptable to IEP teams. Team collaboration and flexibility were instrumental to successful implementation. Strategies to promote effective communication and the use of technology would support a participation-based therapy approach.

FORMS OF PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL RECREATION OF SENIORS STUDENTS OF WROCAW UNIVERSITIES OF THE THIRD AGE

The issue of the paper concerns the forms of participation in physical recreation of seniors based on the example of students of the Universities of the Third Age in Wrocaw. The survey research involved 115 elderly people attending classes conducted by Wrocaw public universities: the University of Wrocaw, the University of Economics and Business, the University of Environmental and Life Sciences and the Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences. The purpose of the research was to obtain an answer to the question: What are the forms of participation in physical recreation of seniors from Wrocaw Universities of the Third Age?

Artykuł analizuje uwarunkowaną klasowo aktywność sportową i rekreacyjną dzieci i ich rodziców w oparciu o teorię Pierre’a Bourdieu. Celem badania było scharakteryzowanie uczestnictwa w sporcie respondentów z klasy średniej i wyższej (n=64) i ich dzieci oraz sprawdzenie, czy uczestnictwo w sporcie jest uwarunkowane klasowo zgodnie z wzorami zależności prezentowanymi przez Pierre’a Bourdieu w odniesieniu do pola sportu. Skorzystano z częściowo ustrukturyzowanych indywidualnych wywiadów pogłębionych. Wywiady przeprowadzono w okresie od grudnia 2016 do marca 2017 r. na terenie Warszawy i aglomeracji warszawskiej. Wyniki wskazały, iż zarówno aktywność sportowo-rekreacyjna badanych rodziców, jak i ich dzieci odpowiadała klasowym wzorom praktyk sportowych wskazanym przez Bourdieu. Tradycja rodzinna odegrała ważną rolę przy wyborze aktywności dzieci z klasy wyższej. Uprawiały one również więcej dyscyplin sportu niż dzieci z klasy średniej, a te same dyscypliny sportu były uprawianie przez dzieci z obu klas w inny (np. mniej lub bardziej zindywidualizowany, bardziej kosztowny, ściśle nadzorowany przez rodziców) sposób. Artykuł kończy wskazanie konsekwencji klasowo uwarunkowanej aktywności sportowo-rekreacyjnej badanych.

Motives for Practicing Active Sport Tourism by Students of Tourism and Recreation Degree Course

Introduction: The decisions made by tourists, connected with the trip outside the place of residence as well as choice of destination are related to fulfilling different types of needs. Research of the motives of undertaking tourist activity were conducted to a different extent as well as in different parts of the population so far, however there are no reports concerning the motives of practicing active sport tourism by students of tourism and recreation studies, people who in the future will be organizing the leisure and holiday. Aim: The aim of this work was to present the motives of practicing active sport tourism by students of tourism and recreation course. Materials and Methods: The study involved 484 people, including 200 women (55.7 %) and 159 men (44.3 %). The method of diagnostic survey was implemented. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: personal details and 10 questions relating to participation in physical recreation for all respondents. Five questions concerning forms and the organization of practicing active sport tourism were also formulated for people who declared participation in that kind of tourism. Moreover, 49 statements were conveyed regarding the motives of involvement in active tourism to which the respondents answered according to the 5-step “Likert Scale”. Results: Based on the survey and analysis of the literature it can be concluded that the most important role in making decisions about practicing active tourism among the surveyed students of tourism and recreation degree course were social factors: inclination for an active leisure with friends, the need for human contact and the health benefits of active sport tourism.

Comparing participation in physical recreation activities between children with disability and children with typical development: A secondary analysis of matched data

BackgroundFacilitating participation in physical recreation among children with disability is an increasingly important aim of paediatric rehabilitation. AimTo compare the extent (diversity and frequency), context (where and companionship), experience (enjoyment) and preference for participation in physical recreation activities outside-of-school between children with disability and children with typical development. Methods and proceduresOne hundred and sixty-three children with physical, intellectual, sensory or multiple disabilities (67 girls; mean age 10.8yr) were matched with 163 children with typical development for age, sex, geographical location and socioeconomic status. Participation in 16 physical recreation activities (including walking, cycling, team sports) was compared between these two groups using non-parametric statistics and relative risk ratios. Outcomes and resultsThere were significant differences between the groups in 14 activities. A lower percentage of children with disability reported participating in 5 physical recreation activities. A higher percentage of children with disability reported not participating in their preferred activities. Children with disability were less likely to participate on their own in some day-to-day physical recreation activities such as walking and cycling. Conclusions and implicationsDifferences between the groups related to the context (companionship) and preference for participation. Understanding and addressing these differences may enhance participation among children with disability.

Leisure, income inequality and the Veblen effect: cross-national analysis of leisure time and sport and cultural activity

This paper was prompted by the publication in Britain in 2009 of The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always do Better, by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, which attracted considerable comment, both positive and negative and both substantive and methodological. The book claimed to show that, on a range of health and social measures of well-being, rich countries with more equal income distributions tended to perform better than those with less equal income distributions. Leisure time and behaviour were not among the indicators of well-being included and, while some researchers have sought to fill this gap, the range of leisure indicators used to date has been limited. This paper examines the relationship between income inequality and leisure time on a world-wide basis, and ten measures of cultural participation and two of sport and physical recreation participation in European countries. Efforts are made to address some of the methodological criticisms which have been made of The Spirit Level. It is found that more equal countries have more leisure time and higher levels of participation in cultural and sporting activities, and that there are also significant relationships with absolute Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per head and with religious-related values. The extent to which variations in leisure time and participation are related to income inequality is linked to Thorstein Veblen’s theory of pecuniary emulation, referred to as the ‘Veblen effect’.

Socio-Demographic and Leisure Activity Determinants of Physical Activity of Working Warsaw Residents Aged 60 to 69 Years

The purpose of the study was to assess factors determining physical activity in persons at the age of 60–69 years in an urban area. The study included 262 working residents of Warsaw at the initial period of old age. The study utilized a questionnaire consisting of two parts. The first part concerned recreational and touristic activities in the previous year. The second is a Polish version of IPAQ, assessing the respondents’ level of activity throughout the past week. Based on IPAQ results, the respondents were divided into physically active and inactive ones. The active group included people meeting moderate to vigorous physical activity, whereas the inactive group included people who took up no physical activity at all or those with a low physical activity level. The relations between taking up physical activity and the variables characterizing the demographic structure as well as touristic and recreational activity of the respondents were assessed with the use of a log-linear analysis. Out of the variables taken into account, age, education and participation in physical recreation proved to be significant factors in taking up activity by the elderly. The odds ratios computed for the analyzed variables indicate that the risk of being inactive increases over two times after exceeding 65 years of age; a risk of similar magnitude was also observed in case of less educated populations. Regular participation in physical recreation provides a four-times increase in the chances to achieve levels of physical activity sufficient to remain healthy.

Sport and recreation participation: The transition from grade 12 to third year at university

Physical activities reflect the ability of man to exist within his environment. The benefits of physical activity have been extolled throughout western history, but it was not until the second half of the twentieth century that scientific evidence supporting these beliefs began to accumulate. Epidemiological data suggest that activity levels generally increase from middle childhood into early adolescence, and then they tend to decline. Adolescence is a critical period in which initiation and formation of health behaviours occur, which can continue into adulthood. The purpose of the study is thus to investigate sport and physical recreation participation (physical activity) in the transition from the completion of school education to the completion of the third year of university study. A total of 410 third year students at a university participated in a questionnaire survey. The results indicated that there is a serious decline in the participation in physical recreation and sport from Grade 12 to the third year of university. This is especially relevant to competitive sport and accentuates the importance of establishing physical activity patterns in early adolescence (and not necessarily participation in highly competitive sport). The motivation of a society from political, administrative and especially educational points of view to develop an infrastructure for the enhancement and development of sport from a recreational to an elite level of participation is of the utmost importance to address this problem. Physical education at school can and must contribute to the initiation and formation of lifelong physical behaviour patters. Survey on Females' Constraints in Physical Recreation Participation

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in English; abstract also in Chinese.Female of all age groups and socio-economic status do face a number of constraints in pursuing physical recreation activity. The present paper aimed to study the constraints of female's physical recreation participation, and the relationship of perceived constraints and the level of participation between different occupation status, education level, and marital status. Two hundred and eight females aged 18 to 60 were invited to fill in the Physical Recreation Participation Questionnaire (PRPQ) to identify their perceived constraints and level of physical recreation participation. Results indicated that there were certain constraints factors, such as psychological constraints, accessibility constraints and time constraints, more related to the constriction in female physical recreation participation. When analyzing the constraint dimensions with different status towards participation frequency, the result was not necessary negatively related. Only housewives and middle education level women with lower perceived constraints demonstrated higher physical recreation participation than their counterparts.在參與康樂性質的體能活動時，無論年紀多大或有何種社會地位，女性均會面對不同的參與阻礙，本研究旨在了解其中的參與阻礙與女性的職業、敎育水平及婚姻狀況的關係。208位女士被邀請填寫「參舆體育康樂活動問卷」(PAPQ)。結果顯示心理因素、場地因素及時間因素為主要的參與阻礙；但是，參與阻礙與參與頻率並沒有呈反相關。另外，經常參與活動的家庭主婦及中等程度學歷的女士均面對較低的參與阻礙。

Negotiating Constraints to Women's Physical Recreation

Abstract The purpose of this project was to examine how constraints to women's participation in physical recreation were negotiated. Physical recreation was defined as freely chosen, enjoyable experiences which involved gross body movement and were described as sport, exercise, fitness, dance, or outdoor activities. By using two sets of qualitative data that addressed adult female participation and nonparticipation in physical recreation activities, typologies emerged concerning the ways constraints were negotiated: achievers, attempters, compromisers, dabblers, and quitters/defaulters. These typologies were depicted in a model that showed how women responded to their constraints, their resistance to constraints, and the perceived benefits versus costs that were associated with physical recreation participation. The results have implications for examining trends in the negotiation of physical recreation for further understanding the leisure and sport behavior of women.

Toothbrushing frequency and physical recreation in 14-year-old schoolchildren

A SURVEY of 4075 14-year-old children from second ary schools throughout England was made to obtain information about toothbrushing frequency and par ticipation in physical recreation. Subjects completed a questionnaire, anonymously, in class. In both sexes, toothbrushing frequency was found to rise sig nificantly as participation in vigorous and sedentary sports outside of school hours increased. There was a similar association between toothbrushing fre quency and vigorous team games in school in males, but not in females. These results support previous findings that toothbrushing behaviour is associated with personal and social behaviours, and emphasises the need to consider dental health behaviour in relation to the whole function of the individual.

Physical recreation participation of females and males during the adult life cycle

Abstract This study examined participation in physical recreation activities of college‐educated females and males during the adult life cycle. Thirty activities were classified into individual/dual, outdoor, and team activities, and total number of activities and number of participation days were analyzed in relation to sex and life‐cycle variables. The results indicate lower participation of females than males in team sports and outdoor activities, but not in individual/dual sports. Although a decline in participation was found with increasing age, the effect of age on participation differs for females and males. Marital status and presence of children did not differentially affect participation of females and males. Participation was found to decrease faster with age for single persons than for married persons or those with children. Implications for future research are discussed.
