Perceived Participation to Kindergartens, Teachers, and Parents of Physical Education in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China

Background and Aim: This study addresses the scarcity of empirical evidence on children's participation in Physical Education (PE) and the perspectives of teachers and parents within the Chinese context. The study aims to determine the level of student engagement in PE and identify factors influencing their participation. It also seeks insights into how teachers and parents view PE's importance in children's well-being. Materials and Methods: Conducted in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, the study involved 201 kindergartens, 200 parents, and 65 teachers. Analytical methods included tables, frequencies, percentages, mean proportion analysis, standard deviation proportion analysis, confidence interval analysis, one-sample z-score test for proportion, two-sample z-score test for proportion, and correlation analysis. The research also led to the development of a guide for creating a kindergarten's physical literacy model. Results: Kindergartens exhibit a moderate perception of PE, with males generally having a higher perception than females. Teachers view PE positively, considering it moderately beneficial for physical and mental development. However, barriers to teaching PE include limited event space, security concerns, venue and equipment issues, weather-related inconveniences, and parents' lack of sports proficiency. Parents have a favorable view of PE, acknowledging its positive impact. Barriers for parents include safety concerns, extracurricular workloads, limited interest in after-school sports, venue limitations, and academic pressures. Kindergartens express enthusiasm for sports like basketball and football, but challenges may reduce physical activity and lead to frustration. Conclusion: The perception of physical education in kindergartens varies among different stakeholders, with gender differences and positive attitudes from teachers and parents. However, numerous barriers, including space limitations and safety concerns, need to be addressed to ensure a more effective and enjoyable PE experience for children in this educational setting.

INVESTIGATION AND RESEARCH ON PARENTS' PARTICIPATION IN CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL EDUCATION OF INTELLECTUALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN PHYSICAL EDUCATION OF INTELLECTUALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

With the development of special education, the education of exceptional children has also received more and more attention. Generally, the education and training of parents of special children brand behavioral intervention are keys to helping special children. The ecological theory of child development believes that parents are the critical factors influencing the development of exceptional children; children' learning occurs in the natural environment and runs through daily life activities. The family is the earliest environment for children, and parents are children's first teachers. Education must start from the family; the first person to build a bridge for children can only be parents.In China, the participation of parents of children with intellectual disabilities in their children's physical education has not received enough attention, and the physical education of most children with intellectual disabilities has not been fully implemented to address this phenomenon. This article uses literature methods, field surveys, expert interviews, data statistics, questionnaires, and other methods to research and investigate the attitudes, current situation, and approaches of parents of children with intellectual disabilities in Maoming City about how to participate in their children's physical education. It was found that there are constraints such as insufficient understanding of participation in children's physical education, low overall level of participation in children's physical education, participation in children's physical education as a formality, insufficient depth of participation, and traditional participation in children's physical education. This was discussed and proposed. Practical suggestions for modifications. This study is of great value in providing reference literature for developing family education for the mentally handicapped in the future. Physical Education Teaching Quality Evaluation Method Using Mobile Edge Computing in the Online and Offline Environment

The development of different technology has impacted the different stages of human life. Additionally, with the implication of computing technology sports and physical education can be improved. The use of mobile edge technology aids in gathering precise data related to physical education. Therefore, a specific improvement is possible. This following analysis has looked into the factor of mobile edge computing that aids in the evolution of physical education teaching. Moreover, the study has focused on developing an appropriate path for the integration of MEC into PE education. By utilising Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technologies in both online and off-line learning contexts, this study offers a thorough way for assessing the quality of sports teaching. The suggested approach integrates multiple characteristics and performance measures to evaluate the efficacy of physical education instruction and participation, taking into consideration the changing educational landscape.

Primary school teachers’ views on language-responsive physical education

Language-responsive teaching aims to promote pupils’ participation opportunities by enabling them to acquire general academic language skills. It is assumed that the acquisition of academic language competencies must be accompanied and supported by the entire school and all school subjects. Yet, the idea of language-responsive Physical Education (PE) seems to be taken up only reluctantly in the current subject didactic and academic discourse. Thus, it is the aim of this article to contribute to bringing this topic into focus. The possibilities and limitations of language-responsive teaching in PE are examined from the teachers’ point of view. Special attention is paid to pupils facing language-barriers, as it is essential for this group to receive extra support to avoid educational disadvantages. Language education in PE has been a rather marginalized topic – much in contrast to the more recent discourse on general education and its crucial role for long-term academic and socio-economic success. It has been argued that the potential for language-building in PE has not been exploited satisfactorily. The observation that the idea of language-responsive PE has received little attention, despite its promising potential, begs the question of possible reasons. The following inquiry therefore investigates the perspectives of PE teachers on language-responsive teaching. The study consisted of 26 qualitative interviews with primary school teachers and aimed to generate insights into the importance attached to language teaching in PE in general (a), and its relevance for pupils’ participation in PE as well as for creating equal educational opportunities (b). Moreover, the study explores subject-specific potentialities and challenges for language-responsive teaching faced by teachers with respect to pupils with special needs in language and communication or non-native speakers who have difficulties in understanding the language of instruction (c).

Participation in physical education classes and social isolation among adolescents: A harmonized analysis with 266,156 participants from 69 countries

ObjectiveTo analyze the association between participation in physical education (PE) classes and social isolation among adolescents. MethodsWe used data from the Global School-based Health Survey, comprising 266,156 adolescents from 69 countries/territories. Participation in PE classes (days/week) was reported by the students. Social isolation was assessed through questions regarding the number of friends and loneliness perception. Poisson regression models were used to identify the association of weekly participation in PE classes with social isolation, and harmonized meta-analyses were used to estimate a summary association. Results were expressed through prevalence ratios (PR) and their respective confidence intervals (95%CI). ResultsAdolescents who participated in PE classes on one [PR:0.87 (95%CI:0.83; 0.92)], two [0.84 (0.79; 0.89)], and three or more days per week [0.77 (0.73; 0.82)] had a lower prevalence of having a low number of friends than their peers with no PE classes. The loneliness perception was lower among those who participated in PE classes on one [0.86 (0.81; 0.90)], two [ 0.93 (0.87; 0.98)], and three or more days per week [0.94 (0.90; 0.98)] than among those who did not participate in PE classes. Participation in PE classes was also associated with lower social isolation (combined indicator: a low number of friends + loneliness perception) [1 PE day/wk: 0.88 (0.85; 0.92); 2PE days/wk: 0.88 (0.84; 0.92); ≥3 PE days/wk: 0.85 (0.82; 0.89)]. ConclusionsParticipating in at least one PE class per week is associated with a lower perception of social isolation among adolescents. Countries should seek to promote student participation in PE classes as a way of reducing social isolation.

Assessment of Factors Influencing Students’ Participation in Physical and Health Education in Secondary Schools in The Federal Capital Territory

This quantitative research study aims to understand the factors that influence the participation of secondary school students and teachers in Physical and Health Education (PHE) in public schools located in the Federal Capital Territory. The study involved a sample of 150 students and 20 PHE teachers, selected using a stratified random sampling technique to ensure diversity in the participant groups. Data collection was primarily done through a structured four-point Likert scale questionnaire, which evaluated level of participation, factors and barriers to engagement in PHE programmes. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted to summarise and analyse the data obtained. ANOVA was used to test for significant impacts of different factors on student participation in PHE, including student-related, teacher-related, and institution-related factors. The findings of the study indicate that teacher-related and institution-related factors have a significant impact on participation in physical and health education among secondary school students, while student-related factors were not found to be determinants. The study also found that the perceived importance of physical and health education, availability of facilities, and support from teachers and peers were the key factors influencing students’ participation in the subject. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing the importance of PHE in the curriculum, improving facilities and resources for physical and health education, and fostering greater collaboration between teachers and students to promote participation. Implementing these recommendations could potentially enhance student engagement and overall participation in physical and health education in secondary schools.

The Construction of Wisdom Teaching Mode of Physical Education and Training in Colleges and Universities in the Internet Era

Abstract The rise of the intelligent teaching model, relying on artificial intelligence and digital information technology, provides students with personalized and autonomous learning pathways. The model encourages students to learn independently and develop personally by integrating online and offline learning resources, enhancing their innovation and practical skills. Educational innovation has focused on exploring how to effectively incorporate competent teaching resources to improve teaching efficiency and students’ physical education skills. This study designed a new smart teaching mode for physical training science using blended learning theory and artificial intelligence technology. The differences in students’ physical education performance, participation, and satisfaction between the traditional and intelligent teaching modes were analyzed by comparison. The students who used innovative teaching methods in the study were better than those who used conventional teaching methods in 100-meter sprint and basketball shooting accuracy, with an average improvement rate of 15%. According to the study, the intelligent teaching mode can effectively enhance students’ physical education learning efficiency and mastery of movement skills, paving the way for a new development direction in college physical education.

"If only balls could talk…": barriers and opportunities to participation for students with blindness and visual impairment in specialized PE.

For children with blindness and visual impairment (BVI) of all ages, disability sport and/or regular Physical Activity (PA) are deemed beneficial, promoting physical and mental health as well as increasing wellbeing and life satisfaction. In this regard, Physical Education (PE) serves as a foundation to regular and lifelong participation in PA, mainstream and/or disability sport. Research points towards manifold participation barriers for children with BVI in PE, which so far have mainly been investigated in inclusive settings and from the perspectives of sighted parents, teachers and peers. Consequently, people with BVI frequently consider PE a missed opportunity for lifelong PA. As transitioning from general to special schooling deems the only alternative to continue their education, questions arise in how far and in which ways specialized schools manage to accommodate their needs in PE. To address these gaps in literature, we investigated BVI students' perceived opportunities and barriers to participation in PE within a specialized school setting and their imaginations for possible (digital) improvements and solutions. Within the framework of Inclusive and Youth Participatory Action Research, we adopted the Mosaic Approach to investigate a sample of 19 students aged 14-20 at lower and upper secondary level in a specialized school in Austria. Data material included audio-recordings of interviews, student-guided school tours, photographs of significant places and objects and field protocols. The analysis was conducted with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Through the analysis, we identified three themes. The data material firstly revealed the complex intricacies of how PE teachers can act as facilitators and gatekeepers to autonomous PA. Secondly, material norms function not only as barriers to participation even in a specialized school setting, but also constitute the basis for social hierarchies between students with various degrees of visual impairment. Thirdly, students imagined manifold digital solutions to enhance participation derived from their perceived barriers. The findings contribute to amplifying BVI individuals' voices and provide revealing insights in how participation in PA is enabled and prohibited for students with BVI which can not only help to improve specialized but also inclusive settings.

An Empirical Investigation of Engineering Students' Attitute Towards Sports and Physical Education, Cultural Activities and Stress Management

Abstract: This study gives an empirical perspective regarding engineering students towards sports and physical education, cultural activities and stress management. This research examines various motives for participation and non-participation in various activities. College students involved in lot of stress due to academic work, competition, daily hassles, parental expectations etc. Total sample of 270 respondents who were pursuing Bachelor of Engineering was selected. The students chosen for the study were from departments of Electronics and Telecommunication (E&TC), Computer Science (CSE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Information Technology (IT) and Electrical Engineering (EE). Chi-square testing was used to taste the stated hypothesis in Research Methodology. This research concludes that students perusing engineering are actively involved in various activities because they are aware of benefit of active participation in sports, physical education and cultural events. At the same time they are also aware about stress management and what are most important causing factors of stress. Result of Hypothesis testing proves that Stress Management is directly proportional to EducationalPerformance & Parental Expectation. Sports activities found significant impact on Physical Fitness whereas participation in cultural events if directly related to Stress Management. Body-related concerns and participation in physical education among adolescent students: the mediating role of motivation.

There is a need to understand better factors influencing participation in physical education (PE) and the mechanisms involved. The adolescent years are characterised by increasing levels of body-related concerns. In PE, the body is judged for its physical abilities and subject to social comparisons and body judgements. Grounded in the Self-Determination Theory, this study aimed to explore whether body-related factors were associated with adolescents' involvement in PE and whether types of motivation mediated this relationship. The study involved 2,140 (54.5% girls) secondary students (15-16-year-olds) from Norway participating in the nationally representative "Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study: a WHO collaborative cross-national study." Body-related factors included Body Mass Index (BMI), health complaints, body perception and dietary behaviours. Gender, age, and socioeconomic status (family affluence) were control variables. Motivation for PE was assessed with the Perceived Locus of Causality (PLOCQ) scale measuring three distinct factors: autonomous motivation, controlled motivation and amotivation. PE involvement was self-reported as weekly participation in PE classes and time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during PE. Gender (girl), family affluence, health complaints, not being on a diet but wanting to lose weight, and body perception (too fat) were negatively associated with weekly PE participation when adjusting for other variables. This association was largely explained by students' autonomous motivation in the case of health complaints and partly in the case of dietary behaviour and body perception. Similar results were observed for MVPA during PE lessons. Additionally, gender was associated with MVPA through amotivation. The study adds new knowledge to the understanding of the relationship between body-related factors and PE, supporting that autonomous motivation is a central mechanism and an avenue for further research. The results should be considered in planning high-quality PE classes and suggest that an autonomous supportive learning climate sensitive to body-related concerns should be a priority to increase adolescent involvement in PE.

The role of adolescents’ participation in physical education and leisure-time sport activity on their social connectedness, depression, and aggressive behaviour

ABSTRACT The current study investigated the benefits of adolescents’ participation in physical activity (PA), including physical education (PE) and leisure-time sports activity (LTSA), on their subjective wellbeing (SWB), namely social connectedness, depression, and aggression. Specifically, the study explored the mediating role of social connectedness in the relationship between adolescents’ PA and depression/aggression. Data were collected from 358 middle-school students in Korea and analysed using structural equation modelling. Results indicated that adolescents’ participation in PE had a direct positive effect on social connectedness, while LTSA had a direct negative effect on depression. Social connectedness was negatively associated with both depression and aggression, while depression was positively associated with aggression. Consequently, the results indicated a full mediation effect of social connectedness between PE and adolescent SWB. The results also suggested meaningful gender differences. The effect of LTSA on depression was significant only for females, while the relationship between social connectedness and depression was stronger for females. Overall, the study suggests that PE is an effective way to enhance middle schoolers’ social connectedness, which can decrease the level of depression and aggression. Consequently, the health and education agencies should consider PE and LTSA as an effective strategy to promote Korean adolescents’ subjective wellbeing.

Generalist Early Education and Specialist Physical Education Teachers’ Views on the Scope of Early Childhood Physical Education

On a national ministerial announcement concerning employing specialist Physical Education (PE) teachers to teach PE in early childhood education (as opposed to generalist early education teachers), this research sought to investigate teachers’ views on this issue. Taking Lawson's (1983) theory of occupational socialization as a sensitizing framework, we examined whether teachers' specialization and experiences of participation in PE influenced their perspectives on early childhood PE teaching. Twenty in-service teachers, male and female, working in public education as generalist early childhood teachers (n = 10) and specialist physical education teachers (n = 10) participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews and the thematic analysis technique were used to generate data. The results showed that irrespective of their specialization, teachers’ positive acculturation experiences in PE and sports influenced their attitudes towards early childhood PE. However, all participants assigned a functional-practical value to PE rather than an educational one. This finding was attributed to broader socio-cultural influences concerning the scope of school PE in early education. Both generalist and specialist teachers perceived their professional roles and responsibilities as distinct. They advocated for establishing interdisciplinary professional training programs as a prerequisite for employing PE specialists in early childhood education. Even though teachers’ specialization shapes their scientific assumptions and understandings, personal acculturation and professional socialization experiences seem influential in determining their daily practices at school. The emerging early childhood PE literature could open up a myriad of opportunities for research in this field, always keeping in mind that the learning needs and interests of young children stay in the foreground.

The physical education experiences of pupils with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: An ableism-critical perspective

There is an ever-growing body of research relating to disabled pupils’ experiences of physical education (PE). However, our research is novel because it draws on an ableism-critical perspective to amplify the voices and centre the PE experiences of pupils with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We used an online survey to gather quantitative and qualitative data from 100 participants with a diagnosis to explore their perceptions of: (a) the influence of JIA on participation in PE; (b) relationships with same-aged peers and their influence on experiences in PE; (c) relationships with teachers and their influence on experiences in PE; and (d) the appropriateness of the PE curriculum. Microsoft Excel was utilised to analyse quantitative data and produce descriptive statistics that were used to map views and experiences of PE, while qualitative data generated from open questions were analysed thematically. We discuss data in relation to the following themes: (a) pain, fatigue, and fear of injury restricted participation in PE; (b) awareness and (mis)understanding of JIA; (c) the negative judgements of others and peer bullying in PE; and (d) the (in)appropriateness of the PE curriculum. We end this article by emphasising the importance of disrupting ableist ideologies, discourses, and knowledge, particularly as these all relate to (mis)understandings of JIA and negative perceptions about the ability of such pupils in PE, because they are contributing to the marginalisation and ostracisation of pupils with JIA.

KNITTED MOVEMENT ACTIVITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

It is a generally accepted fact that every child follows a different pace of development. The main protagonists of participation in physical education and physical activity are the children and the teacher. Active participation in physical education and physical activity can be a challenge for children with special educational needs (SEN), and adapted physical education and maintaining physical activity can be a challenge for teachers. The focus of the article is the physical activity of children with special needs and the methods that help them develop an active lifestyle. The study emphasizes the importance of adapting physical education and using individualized programs in order for all children to successfully participate in physical education activities. However, the topic is not new, and the author points to foreign and domestic research that examines the importance of regular physical activity for children with special needs. What is new, however, is that the article examines the topic from the child's perspective and focuses on solutions. The announcement highlights a permanent process to ensure that all children can successfully participate in physical education activities. The article discusses in detail the possibilities of adapting physical education and physical activity, which satisfy the unique needs of children with SEN, which affect the following topics: characteristics of children with SEN, the importance of physical activity, adapted physical education programs, treatment of problems in the psychomotor area, ensuring successful participation, as well as modification options and suggestions.

Physical Activity and Emotional Regulation in Physical Education in Children Aged 12-14 Years and Its Relation with Practice Motives.

This study aimed to analyze the different types of emotional regulation in first and second year high school students according to sex and age. Many adolescents do not meet the minimum WHO recommendations, at a critical stage in which habits that will later be maintained are established. For this reason, physical education is an important means to promote these habits and an understanding of the reasons for their participation in physical education. For this purpose, PLOC-2 was used. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to determine the characteristics of the data, the ANOVA test to explore the differences between sexes, and the Spearman test for correlations between the type of regulation and age. The results showed significant differences in several items and emotional regulation by sex and an inverse correlation between age and demotivation. There are differences between the reasons why both sexes perform physical activity, and we have determined that boys have more intrinsic regulation than girls do.

Assessing the Role of Recreational Activities in Physical Education Participation of College Students in One State University in Laguna Philippines

Physical education (PE) is a crucial component of a well-rounded education because it equips the holistic aspects of the students required to live a healthy and active lifestyle. The objective of this study is to assess the role of recreational activities on physical education participation. This study explores the students’ profile, role of recreational activities in physical education participation and its relationship among 2nd year college students in one state university in Laguna, Philippines. This research employs descriptive design and random sampling method in determining the respondents. The researcher analyzed the gathered data from the administered validated self-made questionnaire. The results showed that the respondents relished the recreational activities immensely and actively participated which demonstrate that the recreational activities enabled physical activity, intellectual and emotional stimulation, and interaction with others. The high levels of participation illustrates that the students enjoyed the games and that they benefited to their overall enjoyment of physical education courses. Consequently, the results emphasize the respondents' favorable feelings toward physical education classes along with their strong drive to get involved and prosper in their classes. Their desire to learn and pursue new physical activities is indicative of their proactive approach to PE. The significance of nurturing a supportive and active physical education environment that encourages the holistic development and well-being of students is highlighted. It is recommended to utilize the designed process handbook to prioritize the incorporation of recreational activities into their curricula and provide an atmosphere of encouragement to have an active engagement and enjoyment.

Physical Education Skill Development of Individuals With Visual Impairments: A Preliminary Study

Evidence suggests that youth with visual impairments often experience exclusion from participation in physical education (PE). This study examined the frequency that individuals with visual impairments reported having learned fundamental motor skills and commonly taught PE sports skills, the importance that they ascribed to learning such skills, and their confidence that youth with visual impairments could master them. Adults with visual impairments completed an online questionnaire regarding their experiences with common PE skills. Data were analyzed through frequency analysis and repeated-measures analysis of covariance. Participants engaged most frequently in fundamental motor skills and least in team sports. Participants’ mean ratings of confidence and importance were highest for fundamental motor skills compared with other skill categories. Results regarding nonparticipation in some skills align with previous findings that youth with visual impairments often do not participate in all aspects of PE.

Factors Influencing Learners’ Participation in Physical Education in The New Normal: An Input to Curriculum Development Program


 This study focused on determining the factors that influence the learners’ participation in Physical Education (PE) under the New Normal; it also investigated perceptions about teaching quality, level of readiness in distance learning, and the mean level of participation in PE in accordance to MELCS. It further looked into the significant relationships between factors of teaching quality; learners’ level of readiness to distance learning as against learners’ participation; and learners’ demography. This study offers a lot of learning opportunities about simplified and essential teaching modalities, which are focused and easy for learners, under the New Normal environment and under the threat of being infected with Covid-19. Frequencies, percentage, means, standard deviation, Pearson product moment of correlation, multiple linear regression, and hierarchical linear regression were the statistical tools applied in the analysis of data collected from selected Junior High School learners from 25 districts in the Division of Laguna. Major findings from the study are that (i) learners have a high level of perception of teaching quality in terms of cognitive activation, supportive climate, and classroom management; (ii) learners have a high level of readiness on distance learning in terms of availability of technology, use of technology, self-confidence, acceptance, and time management skills; and (iii) a high mean level on learner’s participation in PE according to their respective MELCS in terms of personalized exercise programs, physical activity participation, physical activity/fitness assessment, and skills demonstration. This study recommended that physical education teachers may provide students with more enhanced and localized activities that are tailored to their interests and appropriate for this new normal setting. 

Factors Influencing Learners' Participation in Physical Education in The New Normal: An Input to Curriculum Development Program

The Philippines' current disaster mitigation and adaptation landscape this school year has brought a significant challenge to the education system as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adversity and the resilience of people to hazards were experienced while combating this pandemic. Crisis and risk management systems are required to help prevent disease outbreaks and pandemics from affecting education communities. This point of view guides teachers, institutional heads, and authorities on how to deal with the crisis. The previous year saw many people face unexpected stress and adversity as a result of the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). As the number of challenges in providing basic education to students grows, school leaders and teachers must develop resilience in surviving and overcoming adversity. This study pursued to determine the relationship between school heads' managerial competencies to teachers' positive resilience in the new normal. A descriptive-correlational research design determined the relationship between the level of school heads' managerial competencies, and the level of teachers' positive resilience in the new normal within the four City Schools Divisions in Laguna for the school year 2021-2022. The study included 503 public school elementary teachers in the positions of teachers I-III and master teachers I-II as respondents. Using the Competency Framework for Southeast Asian School Heads (2014), and The Resilience Scale for Adults (2015), data gathering via an online platform was utilized. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment of correlation, and hierarchical linear regression were the statistical tools utilized to analyze and interpret the data gathered. Findings revealed that the school heads were practicing well in each construct of managerial competencies and each construct of positive resilience. The level of teachers' positive resilience in the new normal resulted in a very high level in terms of establishing friendly relationships easily. The researcher, therefore, concluded that when school heads demonstrated a high level of managerial competencies in terms of strategic thinking and innovation, instructional leadership, personal excellence, stakeholders' engagement, and managerial competencies, a better positive resilience may be expected to all the teachers in the new normal.
