Effects of training module regarding learning management system (LMS) on knowledge and attitude of dental undergraduates toward use of LMS

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in knowledge and attitude of dental students regarding learning management system (LMS) after receiving a specific training regarding the same. Material and Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was done among the 2nd and 3rd-year students of Ranjeet Deshmukh Dental College and Research Centre, Nagpur. Data were collected by a questionnaire containing ten questions. The training module was designed including a didactic session and trouble shooting session for the students. Results: When analyzed, a maximum number of students showed increased knowledge and positive attitude toward LMS after the module. Few students were not using LMS but a maximum number of questions were with a higher percentage of positive responses. There is much awareness and knowledge about LMS after the module. Conclusion: It is critical to train the students regarding various aspects of LMS and its technical details to make navigation easier. The use of information communication technologies in learning involves efforts from not only teachers but also students to make it an effective way of learning. Regular follow-ups and troubleshooting will help maximize students’ active participation in online learning using LMS. Students’ feedback and necessary upgradation of the system are strongly recommended to achieve optimum learning output using LMS.

Understanding the Experiences of Dropouts During COVID-19 Pandemic School Closure: A Qualitative Study

This study explores the teaching learning experiences of school dropouts during pandemic school closure as well as the factors that influenced them to leave the school. The factors affecting dropouts during pandemic school closure were rarely studied in Bhutan. This study employed phenomenology as its method. A total participants of 12 dropouts of the year 2020, four parents, four teachers and four school principals were selected through purposive and snowball sampling. The data was collected with semi-structured interviews consisting of four research questions. The collected interview data was transcribed and analyzed by following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-step framework. The findings demonstrate that abrupt school closures necessitated the use of online learning as a means of ensuring that education continued. However, there were concerns about student participation in online learning using digital platforms due to students’ socioeconomic and technological challenges. These challenges were found to have been the cause of their dropping out of the schools. Students’ socioeconomic background of their parents compelled them to provide support to their parents in the socioeconomic activities, thus, impacting their participation in the regular academic activities. According to the interview, variables that contributed to dropouts included socioeconomic issues, unfinished assignments, difficulties understanding lessons, lack of enthusiasm, a lack of smartphones and poor internet connectivity, pregnancy, and relationships. The study also identified online teaching pedagogy employed by the teachers as a significant contributor to student attrition. Though the study is limited to a district, the findings recommend the need to improve technological access, provide digital equipment and reasonably priced internet to underprivileged students and provide professional development programs for teachers on technical skills to improve their competency in using online apps for effective online teaching.

Students’ Perceptions towards Online Learning in the Upper East Region

Online learning has become the most dominant mode of instruction adopted by facilitators due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. Instructors adopted this mode of instruction in order to engage students in academic activities while they stay in their comfort zones. This study therefore investigated students’ perceptions towards online learning. Two research questions were formulated to guide the study. Purposive sampling technique was adopted in sampling participants for the study. Data was analysed using inferential statistics (ANOVA) and descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and percentage). The interview data was also analysed using thematic analysis. The finding from the study proved that online learning has several benefits and challenges. The findings from the study proved that online learning helps students to learn at their own pace and also share information among each other and facilitators easily. It was also found that online learning saves money and students time since they do not need to travel to the study centers. The study also proved that poor internet connectivity is a serious challenge of online learning. Lack of computer skills and ICT logistics also affect student’s participation in online learning. There was statistically significant difference between the mean perceptions of students on benefits and challenges of online learning. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that Ghana Education Service should provide students with laptops, android phones and tablets to enhance their effective participation in online learning. It was also recommended that tertiary institutions offering online courses should organize seminars for students on online learning and also provide students with internet bundles to help them participate effectively in online learning.

Research on the Evaluation Method of Online Learning Satisfaction of College Students Based on Hierarchical Analysis Approach

Abstract This paper adopts the hierarchical analysis method as the weight calculation method for the evaluation of online learning satisfaction, calculates the weights between the evaluation indexes, and constructs the evaluation system of college students’ online learning satisfaction. Combining the teaching experience, the characteristics of online teaching and the items recorded in the web logs in the online teaching platform, the judgment matrix for online learning satisfaction evaluation is established, and the reasonableness of the matrix is judged by the consistency checking method. Evaluation standards are formulated based on the online learning evaluation information, and the research on online learning satisfaction evaluation is designed, while the online learning satisfaction evaluation of college students is analyzed by using the method of statistical analysis. The results show that the comprehensive learning evaluation scores derived from the use of hierarchical analysis are significantly more objective than the traditional evaluation of students’ learning effectiveness using only the end-of-term test scores, with a score difference of 15, and more than 85.24% of the students based on the hierarchical analysis method of college students’ online learning satisfaction evaluation method, which is effective in promoting the students’ regular participation in online learning. The correlation coefficients of online learning experience with clarity of teaching goals and expectations, teacher-student communication and exchange, learning support services, learning motivation, learning hardware equipment and operability, and teaching methods are 0.491, 0.524, 0.435, 0.596, 0.542, 0.391, respectively, which are all significant at 1% level, i.e., only by guaranteeing a higher level of learning effect can we improve students’ satisfaction with online learning.

Use of Badges as Achievements to Enhance Online Learning

Background and Aim: Digital badges are electronic symbols used as microcredentials to document achievement or skills mastered such as course completion, professional development participation, or training completion. The use of digital badges is trending upward in higher education. This study was undertaken for digital badge creation and implementation and investigated the effects of a digital badge system, on three aspects of undergraduate learners: levels of intrinsic motivation, participation in online learning, and general attitudes toward digital badges. This study aimed to implement digital badges for online learning by medical undergraduates and evaluate student perception regarding digital badges. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted on 150 students of 1st MBBS 2020–2021 batch. WordPress platform was used to design website with additional plugins for registration, discussion forum, and achievement badges. Students were sensitized to digital badge system. Students gained points for posting replies to online discussion, viewing content and clarifying doubts, answering quizzes, and online submission of assignments. Using the points scored, a scale was designed for awarding badges. Student feedback on Likert scale and perception regarding satisfaction, and motivation toward academics by digital badges were collected and analyzed. Results: Participants had positive perceptions of the badges, finding them authentic and innovative. The respondents agreed that digital badges helped to set goals and motivated to achieve these goals. Most students who earned digital badges agreed that badges helped increase their confidence in course material (78%), focus on specific learning objectives (65%), look deeper into course competencies (71%), and motivated to attend online classes regularly (83%). Conclusion: The digital badges were positively received by students who commented favorably about digital badges in their learning. Digital badges were perceived by students as a positive adjunct to learning and may provide a novel mechanism to enhance online learning.

Study on the Participation of College Students in Digital Online Learning in Guangzhou

Digital online learning ability and as a necessary condition for learners to participate in digital learning greatly affect the participation of learners and the enthusiasm of digital learning.Digital online learning, as a form to verify the ability of self-learning, it has become the focus of learners and teachers to improve students' participation. College students' digital online learning ability and participation need to improve the effectiveness through various new teaching methods.Therefore, the forms and strategies of digital online teaching should keep pace with The Times, and more attractive and innovative teaching methods should be researched to improve students' learning interest and independent learning ability, and enhance their participation in online learning.Based on the analysis of the relationship between the digital online learning ability, online learning participation and online learning completion rate of Guangzhou college students, this paper puts forward some suggestions on how to improve the digital online learning effect of college students.

System-, teacher-, and student-level interventions for improving participation in online learning at scale in high schools

Many school systems across the globe turned to online education during the COVID-19 pandemic. This context differs significantly from the prepandemic situation in which massive open online courses attracted large numbers of voluntary learners who struggled with completion. Students who are provided online courses by their high schools also have their behavior determined by actions of their teachers and school system. We conducted experiments to improve participation in online learning before, during, and right after the COVID-19 outbreak, with 1,151 schools covering more than 45,000 students in their final years of high school in Ecuador. These experiments tested light-touch interventions at scale, motivated by behavioral science, and were carried out at three levels: that of the system, teacher, and student. We find the largest impacts come from intervening at the system level. A cheap, online learning management system for centralized monitoring increased participation by 0.21 SD and subject knowledge by 0.13 SD relative to decentralized management. Centralized management is particularly effective for underperforming schools. Teacher-level nudges in the form of benchmarking emails, encouragement messages, and administrative reminders did not improve student participation. There was no significant impact of encouragement messages to students, or in having them plan and team-up with peers. Small financial incentives in the form of lottery prizes for finishing lessons did increase study time, but was less cost-effective, and had no significant impact on knowledge. The results show the difficulty in incentivizing online learning at scale, and a key role for central monitoring.

Learning Continuity during COVID-19: An Analysis of the Higher Education Sector of Bangladesh

Aim. This study aims to understand the factors determining university students’ behavioural intentions toward online learning in Bangladesh. Specifically, this study investigates the relationship between performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC), and behavioural intention (BI). Moreover, this study explores the influence of pandemic fear (PF) as a moderator in the relationship between exogenous and endogenous factors. Methods. The study is cross-sectional and followed a quantitative research approach with purposive sampling. Data were collected at a single point using a sample size of 578 respondents who studied online during the various phases of lockdown at five public and five private universities in Bangladesh. Regarding multivariate analysis, the Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) is applied in this study to test the causal relationships in the structural model, as it is considered a second-generation technique. Results. Statistically, a positive significance was found between PE, EE, SI, and BI in online learning participation. Whereas the FC and the BI exhibited a negative relationship, a positive relationship was found between PE, EE, and the SI on BI. In addition, a moderating role for PF was investigated, and EE and FC were found to influence BI significantly. Conclusion. This study presents an extended UTAUT model by integrating pandemic fear as the moderator to study students' behavioural intention to adopt an online learning system under a disruptive situation. Practitioners, especially academicians and policymakers, will find this model useful while developing andragogic interventions for the higher education sector in Bangladesh.

Critical Factors Influencing Classroom Participation in Online Learning

Efficiency and engagement are considered to be the most critical components of teaching and learning. Teachers have always strived to maximize student involvement and quality participation with the help of various teaching techniques and strategies. The purpose of this study was to explore the ongoing online learning process in language classes and find out ways to enhance student engagement in the process. Research methods: a questionnaire survey and observation were used to determine students’ attitudes, expectations, and the level of involvement in online learning at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The findings reveal the need to enhance student motivation. The research demonstrates that setting various authentic and interactive tasks with meaningful aims can significantly improve student focus. Additionally, incorporating social and emotional activities and providing teacher support and encouragement can facilitate student interaction and trigger an interest in lifelong learning.

Investigation on Students' Learning Satisfaction of Online Courses in Colleges and Universities under the Epidemic Situation of COVID-19 and Analysis of Influencing Factors

With the development of network technology and the enrichment of learning resources, the combination of teaching and technology subverts the traditional education mode and learning mode. Under COVID-19 epidemic, it is impossible to teach face-to-face and gather on a large scale. In order to avoid the spread of the epidemic to the campus, at the request of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, all kinds of schools across the country have postponed the opening of their classes and implemented the "suspension of classes without stopping learning". During COVID-19 epidemic, colleges and universities changed their teaching methods from traditional classroom teaching to online teaching. In the process of college students' participation in online learning, colleges and universities should take the initiative to pay attention to the effect of online teaching mode and analyze the influencing factors of college students' participation in online learning, so as to better carry out online teaching and complete teaching tasks and plans. Based on the teaching theory of distance education, this paper analyzes the students' learning satisfaction and influencing factors of online courses in colleges and universities, and provides ideas for improving and perfecting online teaching methods and enhancing the subject consciousness of college students.

The influence of the digital divide on emergency remote student-centred learning during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study of journalism education

This paper explores the emergency remote learning experiences of journalism students. It discusses how disparities in access to digital tools and participation in online learning, caused by the digital divide, influenced how some benefitted from the student-centred learning approaches adopted while others could not. The study seeks to answer this question: To what extent did the digital divide influence the experiences of journalism students with emergency remote student-centred learning adopted due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic? The study uses Van Dijk’s theory of the usage gap to argue that the unequal access to digital technologies experienced by some students brought about unequal participation in learning. This is despite the use of more student-centred approaches, which, according to existing literature, are supposed to foster greater engagement and participation. The data consisted of 113 vlogs created by second and third-year students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa, between June 1, 2020, and June 30, 2020.

The Effect of Online Student Engagement (OSE) and Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation among University Students

Online learning is a trend in Education 4.0, higher education institutions (HEIs) need to make sure that their students can benefit from it. The COVID19 pandemic recently compelled many HEIs to abandon traditional classroom instruction and instantly switch to online learning. The emphasis of the entrepreneurship course, which emphasizes both theoretical and practical aspects, has also been moved online. The impact of online learning engagement on outcomes of entrepreneurship education is yet unknown due to changes in its delivery manner. The main objectives of this paper are to determine the relationship between skill, emotion, and participation of the individual entrepreneurial orientation. To ascertain the consequences of student participation in online learning and personal entrepreneurial orientation, this study attempts to create a novel model (IEO). This study employs Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Online Student Engagement (OSE) model and the concept of individual entrepreneurial orientation in developing the research model. Methods of quantitative research will be used in this investigation. Data will specifically be gathered using the survey approach of questionnaires. Students enrolled in an entrepreneurial programmed at a nearby public institution make up the population. To guarantee that the sample is representative of students from different faculties, stratified random sampling is used in the selection process. There will be descriptive, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression statistical analysis carried out. This research yields both literary and useful results. The results showed that all moderate linkages between online student engagement and personal entrepreneurial orientation is explained by a new model produced by literacy. In terms of practice, it pinpoints important elements that HEIs must consider while cultivating student entrepreneurs. Additionally, it is essential for advancing government initiatives aimed at creating competitive entrepreneurs, such as the Economic Transformation Program (ETP) and the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education).

Online Learning Participation after the Covid-19 Pandemic in Sikka Regency, Eastern Indonesia

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought major changes in the world of education in Indonesia. The impact caused by this pandemic has led the Indonesian nation to the introduction of civilization or a new era related to mastering communication and information technology through the application of online learning. However, people's readiness to adopt new technologies and apply them in online learning has become an obstacle in itself during the pandemic until now. The purpose of this study is to describe the level of student participation during the pandemic related to the use of online learning technology. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods and emphasizes data collection through interviews, observations and documentation studies. The results showed that the low level of student participation in adopting online learning technology, students were not prepared for changes in application-based online learning technology, lack of digital literacy, lack of income for economic needs, and student mentality. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the unstable economic conditions of the community during the pandemic have caused students' unpreparedness in accepting online learning models through modern learning applications on the internet, the mentality of students who are unwilling to accept changes, and the adaptation to the use of online learning technology.

Acceptance of and self-regulatory practices in online learning and their effects on the participation of Hong Kongsecondary school students in online learning.

This study investigated how the acceptance and use of self-regulatory strategies in online learning affected Hong Kong secondary school students' participation in online learning. A self-reported questionnaire was distributed to 1381 students from six secondary schools. Findings of the descriptive analysis indicated that students did not frequently use most types of online self-regulatory strategies. Although they agreed that the online learning methods were easy to use and facilitated learning, they did not actively participate in online learning activities and showed a low tendency to continuation. Further, structural equation modeling indicated that the effect of strategy use on actual participation was stronger than that of user acceptance. The former had a significant indirect effect on actual participation through the strong effect it had on user acceptance. Consequently, suggestions have been made for improving the instructional design of online learning and increasing students' willingness and readiness to participate in online learning.

Study of Online Learning Studies in Natural Sciences Subject in Biology Topic during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Online learning is one of the efforts made by the government in the education sector to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to determine the implementation of the application of online learning to science lessons in biology material during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research method is descriptive. The results showed that the implementation of online learning of Biology Science material class VIII MTs in Gorontalo City in the teacher aspect included strong criteria as seen from 5 indicators, namely online learning tools, online learning processes, student participation in online learning, online practicum implementation and the assessment process. The implementation of online learning on the material of Biology Science class VIII MTs in Gorontalo City on student aspects includes strong criteria as can be seen from 4 indicators, namely the online learning process, student participation in online learning, implementation of online practicum and increasing creativity. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of online learning of biology science material class VIII MTs in Gorontalo City is a strong criterion.

Persepsi Siswa Terhadap Pembelajaran Daring di SMA N 10 Batang Hari Jambi

The purpose of this study is to analyze how students perceive online learning at SMA Negeri 10 Batanghari. This research is motivated by students' problems during online learning due to the covid-19 pandemic, from face-to-face learning to online learning using Whatsapp Group and Google Classroom media, besides that, students' responses are still low and their participation in online learning shows that students' readiness is still lacking. In this problem, the researcher describes how students perceive online learning at SMA Negeri 10 Batanghari. This research uses a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study research type, the technique for selecting the selected informans was purposive sampling. The data collection techniques was done by means of observation, interview, and documentation study. Data wwere analyzed using techniques from Miles and Huberman consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Informants in this study amounted to 28 people. This research was analyzed using the Construtivistic Theory by Jean Piaget. The result showed that threre were problem of online learning, such as difficult internet access, time limited, and the lesson difficult to understand because of that. The students said that there were so many problem of online learning in pandemic. So that, students perceive online learning at SMA Negeri 10 Batanghari is negative, because the lesson can’t optimal.

Effectiveness of Multimedia-Based Learning Materials For Deaf Students In Online Learning

Hearing impairment experienced by deaf students has an impact on language and academic aspects. Therefore, in online learning, there are numerous problems for deaf students especially to get information that is easy to understand. One way to overcome this obstacle is by making multimedia-based learning materials that consider the principles of visual learning for deaf students. The purpose of the study was to improve students learning outcomes and assess the effectiveness of multimedia-based learning materials using animated videos. The videos are equipped with sign language, visual explanations, and case examples. The method used in this research is mixed. A qualitative approach was used to develop the multimedia and a quantitative approach was used to analyze participants’ performance. The result shows that presenting materials through multimedia animation videos is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes, increasing their participation in online learning, and creating accessibility for deaf students in an inclusive classroom.
