The bi-directional relationships between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function in older adults in China: separating between-person effects from within-person effects

ObjectiveTo examine the bi-directorial association between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function over a 7-year period.MethodsData analyzed was from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a large-scale longitudinal national study. The baseline survey was conducted in 2011 with follow-up every three years. We traced a total of 2718 participants over a period of 7 years. We used adjusted random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) to examine the bi-directorial associations between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function.ResultsWe observed bi-directorial associations between diversity of leisure activity and cognitive function across waves at the between-person and within-person levels. The adjusted random intercept cross-lagged panel models fitted the data appropriately, and the 3-year cross-lagged effects of prior diversified leisure activity participation on cognitive function (β = 0.058, p < 0.01) and cognitive function on subsequent diversified leisure activity participation (β = 0.047, p < 0.05) were significant. The results remained after adjusting the model for baseline sex, age, educational level, marital status and current residence, the number of chronic diseases, ADL, depressive symptoms, sleep quality, smoking, and drinking.ConclusionThis study suggests that a reciprocal causality relationship between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function, indicating a “positive circle” that further promotes cognition over time.

Promoting Older Adults’ Engagement in Disaster Recovery Through Supportive Relationships, Partnerships, and Collaboration: Perspectives of Social Work Practitioners and Human Service Professionals

AbstractShifting demographics—that is, the growing number of older adults in Canada and internationally—and intersecting climatic risks create a complex landscape of aging in place in disaster contexts. Some older adults are vulnerable due to their underlying health conditions and limited physical mobility. Yet they also exhibit resilience in a distinct manner, owing to their wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and ability to navigate adversities. This article elucidates potential avenues for promoting the involvement of older adults in disaster recovery efforts. Our intention is to recognize and foster older adult resilience and mitigate vulnerability by drawing upon insights from the study titled “In the Aftermath of the 2016 Alberta Wildfires: The Role of Social Work Practitioners and Human Service Professionals in Long-Term Disaster Recovery.” Employing a qualitative research approach, that study recruited 51 participants for semistructured interviews and focus groups. A thematic analysis of the collected data unveiled the pivotal roles played by social workers and human service practitioners in facilitating recovery from the 2016 wildfires in the research. Notably, three overarching themes emerged concerning the promotion of older adults’ involvement in disaster recovery: fostering supportive relationships, building partnerships and enhancing collaboration, and addressing ongoing challenges. These findings offer valuable insights into how social work practitioners and human service professionals can effectively facilitate the engagement of older adults in disaster recovery initiatives. This article emphasizes the significance of actively promoting the participation of older adults in disaster mitigation efforts, thereby fostering greater resilience within communities.

Association between education and disability-free life expectancy among Japanese older people: The Ohsaki Cohort 2006 study

BackgroundHigher education level is associated with longer disability-free life expectancy (DFLE). However, evidence is scarce regarding factors that can contribute to eliminating inequality in DFLE according to education level. This study aimed to clarify the association between education and DFLE and estimate whether DFLE in people with lower education may increase to the same level as that in people with higher education through social participation. MethodsWe analyzed data from 13,849 Japanese people aged 65 years and older who participated in a 13-year prospective study. At baseline, we collected information on education levels (low, middle, or high) and social participation. DFLE was defined as the average duration people expect to live without disability. To calculate DFLE for each education level group, the multistate life table method was employed using a Markov model. ResultsAt the age of 65 years, DFLE (95 % confidence interval [CI]) in women with low education was 21.3 years (20.8–21.8) without social participation and 24.3 (23.8–24.9) with social participation. In the middle education group, DFLE was 22.1 (21.6–22.6) without social participation and 25.0 (24.6–25.5) with social participation. In the high education group, DFLE was 22.1 (21.5–22.8) without social participation and 25.5 (25.0–26.0) with social participation. Similar results were found for men. ConclusionsDFLE in people with low or middle education with social participation was almost the same as that in those with high education with social participation, suggesting the possibility that disparities in DFLE by education level could be offset by promoting social participation in older adults.

The mediating roles of depressive symptoms and social participation in the relationship between the effects of pain and cognitive function among Chinese older adults: A longitudinal study

Decline in cognitive function poses a substantial burden on individuals, families, and society. However, the longitudinal potential mechanism underlying the link of pain and cognitive function remains unclear. Using data of 4247 participants aged 60 years and over from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2011, 2013, 2018, and 2020, we discussed the longitudinal predictive effect of pain on cognitive function and the mediating effects of depressive symptoms and social participation. The longitudinal mediation model analysis revealed that pain could not directly influence cognitive function, but it could indirectly predict cognitive function through the independent mediation effects of depressive symptoms and social participation. Moreover, the association between pain and cognitive function was serially mediated by depressive symptoms and social participation. Diversified interventions aimed at relieving pain and depressive symptoms, and increasing social participation in older adults would be beneficial for their cognitive function.

More than Fresh Fruits and Veggies: Farmers’ Markets as a Locus of Social Participation for Older Adults

As awareness of the benefits of social participation for older adults has grown, ideas for how social services agencies can increase older adults’ social participation have proliferated. The goal of this research is to explore how older adults experience the farmers’ market as a hub of social participation. Fifteen older adults in a rural area in the deep South of the U.S. participated in semi-structured interviews. All interviews were transcribed verbatim; transcripts were analyzed using analytic induction techniques. Most participants describe the farmers’ market as an important context for their social participation. They enjoyed the family-like environment, expanded their social network with vendors and volunteers, and received financial support such as the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. Some described their experiences of civil engagement and their contribution to the community. Yet some barriers to their participation exist, such as transportation issues. Implications include further exploration into the potential for farmers’ markets as a context for increasing social participation of rural older adults. In particular, future research should explore the perceptions of social service professionals regarding this connection and the potential for social service agencies to harness the reciprocal nature of the relationship between markets and older patrons.

Participation of older adults in the digital co-creation of long-term care services with the SoCaTel platform

Although the European Commission has promoted the use of co-creation methodology for social services, this innovative practice has not yet been uniformly introduced in Europe. The SoCaTel platform was released with open access to promote and implement a digital co-creation platform involving all stakeholders, especially older adults and their carers, in long-term care. Using an innovative methodology applied in four European sites (Spain, Finland, Ireland and Hungary), in this article, we investigate the acceptance of this technology among older adults, its effectivity as a virtual support tool in the context of COVID-19 and its potential for developing digital repertoires.

Effects of Social Activities on Labor Participation Among Middle-aged and Older Adults in China

As China's population is aging, encouraging middle-aged and older adults to participate in the labor force is of practical significance in alleviating the problems of declining labor supply and rising social burden brought about by population aging. In previous studies on labor participation of the middle-aged and the elderly, scholars have explored factors affecting labor participation of the middle-aged and the elderly in China based on personal characteristics, family factors, social factors, and other perspectives. However, the impact of social participation, which may take various forms, on labor participation of the elderly has been neglected. This paper empirically explores the impact of social participation on labor participation of middle-aged and older adults using data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Based on OLS regression analyses, the results show that social participation is negatively associated with the number of hours worked per year, at the same time, helping others increases the labor supply time. This paper further proposes suggestions on how to balance time allocated to social participation and to labor participation as well as how to promote labor participation of the middle-aged and the elderly.

Developing a Multiprofessional Mobile App to Enhance Health Habits in Older Adults: User-Centered Approach.

Although comprehensive lifestyle habits are crucial for healthy aging, their adherence tends to decline as individuals grow older. Sustaining a healthy life over time poses a motivational challenge. Some digital tools, such as smartphone apps aimed at promoting healthy habits, have been used to counteract this decline. However, a more profound investigation is necessary into the diverse experiences of users, particularly when it concerns older adults or those who are unfamiliar with information and communications technologies. We aimed to develop a mobile app focused on promoting the health of older adults based on the principles of software engineering and a user-centered design. The project respected all ethical guidelines and involved the participation of older adults at various stages of the development of the app. This study used a mixed methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies for data collection. The study was conducted in Ribeirão Prêto, São Paulo, Brazil, and involved 20 older adults of both genders who were aged ≥60 years and enrolled in the Physical Education Program for the Elderly at the University of São Paulo. The research unfolded in multiple phases, encompassing the development and refinement of the app with active engagement from the participants. A total of 20 participants used a mobile health app with an average age of 64.8 (SD 2.7) years. Most participants had a high school education, middle-class status, and varying health literacy (mean score 73.55, SD 26.70). Overall, 90% (18/20) of the participants owned smartphones. However, 20% (4/20) of the participants faced installation challenges and 30% (6/20) struggled with web-based searches. The focus groups assessed app usability and satisfaction. Adjustments increased satisfaction scores significantly (Suitability Assessment of Materials: 34.89% to 70.65%; System Usability Scale: 71.23 to 87.14). Participant feedback emphasized font size, navigation, visual feedback, and personalization, and suggestions included health device integration, social interaction, and in-app communication support. This study contributes to the development of health care technologies tailored to the older adult population, considering their specific needs. It is anticipated that the resulting app will serve as a valuable tool for promoting healthy habits and enhancing the quality of life for older adults.

What determines participation in sport for older adults in England: A multilevel analysis of Active Lives data.

Physical inactivity within an ageing population is an ongoing public health concern for policymakers. Engagement in sport forms a foundation of policy designed to encourage physical activity participation and improve health and wellbeing. This study aimed to (i) understand the extent to which older adults participate in sport and the (ii) correlates that predict this involvement within an English population sample of older adults. A further aim was (iii) to examine the extent in which sports participation may vary due to the opportunity provided across Active Partnerships in England. To address this, a multi-level analysis framed through COM-B was conducted of the 2021 English Active Lives dataset (i.e., during the COVID-19 pandemic). The Active Lives survey provides population-level insight into sport, exercise, and physical activity participation across England. It samples upwards of n = 180,000 participants beyond the age of 16 years and asks questions on factors that influence participation. Our findings drawn from a sample of n = 68,808 older adults (i.e., >60-years of age) indicate that when accounting for variation across regions sports participation was significantly predicted by age (β = -.246, p = .040) and multiple deprivation (β = .706, p = .030). Further, our analysis suggests sports participation across regions is associated with changes in the perceptions of opportunity to participate (β = -28.70, p = .001). As the UK transitions from the COVID-19 pandemic, findings have implications for the promotion of sports participation for older adults, in that local, regional, and national stakeholders must do more to change perceptions of social and physical opportunity within an ageing population. This may be achieved through adaptations to the recreational sporting landscape, raising awareness, and supportive policy changes on a national level.

The effectiveness of the buddy program training module to enhance the daily living function, social participation and emotional status of older adults in residential aged care homes.

The Compeer Model, which was originally designed to match individuals recovering from mental illness with volunteers from their community, served as the basis for the development of the buddy program. However, limited research was available related to the buddy program among older adults in a Malaysian context. The study aimed to identify the effectiveness of the buddy program training module to enhance the daily living function, social participation and emotional status of older adults in residential aged care homes. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 30 pairs of buddies and older adults for both the experimental group and control group in two randomly selected residential aged care homes. The buddies in the experimental group received the buddy program training module related to activities of daily living (basic and instrumental) while the buddy-older adults pairs in the control group continued to perform their usual daily life activities in residential aged care homes. Baselines were performed before intervention and at eight weeks post-intervention. Over the eight weeks, for the older adults in the experimental group, there was a significant main effect of time after the intervention on BADL (p = 0.010). There were no significant interaction effects for the experiment group and control group on IADL and social participation. Also, there were no significant interaction effects for all domains in emotional status: depression, anxiety and stress. For buddies, there was a significant interaction effect for depression (p = 0.045) in the control group. The buddy program training module can be used as a guideline for older adults with more significant disabilities in residential aged care homes in managing activities of daily living. Future studies could be implemented to explore the intergenerational buddy program among older adults and young children in the community.

Reporting of Demographics & Subgroup Analyses in Premarketing Studies of FDA Approved High-Risk Cardiovascular Devices, 2014-2022.

Representation of diverse study populations in pivotal clinical trials for medical devices and subgroup analyses for demographic groups to explore differences in safety and effectiveness are essential to understanding the benefits and risks in diverse populations. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken many steps to improve transparency and subgroup analyses over the past decade, but there has not been a recent evaluation of demographic reporting and subgroup analyses. We reviewed all FDA Premarket Approvals for high-risk cardiovascular devices from 2014 to 2022, focusing on pivotal studies supporting device approval. We abstracted detailed demographic data about the age, sex, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic position of study participants. We also assessed the presence and results of subgroup analyses to understand the safety and effectiveness of devices across trial populations. Analysis of 92 pivotal studies revealed that age and sex were reported in 96.7% of the studies, while race and ethnicity were reported in 71.7% and 58.7%, respectively. However, only 7.9% of studies explicitly detailed the participation of older adults (≥65 years) and no studies reported patients' socioeconomic position. Subgroup analyses by sex were conducted in 70.7% of studies, with 12.3% reporting significant differences. In contrast, analyses by race and ethnicity were performed in only 12.0% of the studies, with 9.1% reporting significant differences. Approximately one-third of pivotal studies for high-risk cardiovascular devices approved by the FDA from 2014 to 2022 did not report the race of study participants, nearly 40% did not report ethnicity, and more than 90% did not report the participation of older adults (≥65 years). Subgroup analyses were infrequently conducted by age or race and ethnicity. There is a need for better trial demographic reporting and conduct of subgroup analyses in premarketing studies to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices for all patients.

Life-Space Mobility, Transportation, and the Companionship Network of Members of a Hispanic Senior Center.

Companions (i.e., friends who spend time together) are important for the well-being of older adults. Senior centers in the United States are places for older adults to participate in group activities and form and maintain companionships. However, differences in mobility and transportation may affect the ability of older adults to leverage senior center activities into actual companionships. This social network analysis was conducted to characterize the companionship network among members of a senior center in relation to their life-space mobility and transportation resources. An exponential random graph model was estimated to identify mobility- and transportation-related correlates of the likelihood of a companionship tie among senior center members (N = 42). Members had an average of 2 companionships with one another (M = 2.2, SD = 2.7). Companionships were more likely for members with greater life-space mobility (p = .009), who attended the senior center more frequently (p = .004), with automobile ownership in their households (p = .034), and who were not transportation cost-burdened (i.e., spent less than 15% of their income on transportation, p = .005). Demographic characteristics, limitations on instrumental activities of daily living, and being at risk for depression were not significantly associated with the likelihood of companionships. These findings extend previous knowledge of the role of life-space mobility and transportation in supporting general social participation for older adults to include the importance of transportation and mobility for having companions within a senior center.

Barriers and Benefits of Online Group Exercise Programs for Older Adults.

Engaging in regular physical activity offers a myriad of benefits, including the improvement of mental health, social well-being, and cognitive function. Unfortunately, obstacles, such as transportation constraints, time limitations, and inadequate exercise facilities, hinder the regular participation of older adults in physical activity. Online group physical activity programs present a promising solution to enhance the involvement of older adults; however, several barriers impede their effective utilization. To explore these barriers and benefits, we conducted semi-structured interviews with participants and instructors of a community-based exercise program. Thematic analysis of interviews with 12 physical activity instructors and eight program participants unveiled key hindrances, including limited awareness and accessibility of online programs, challenges in assessing performance during exercise sessions, lack of social component, and technological difficulties. On the positive side, the benefits encompass convenience, wide accessibility, and enhanced social comfort. We also deliberate on future considerations to further bolster participation in these programs.

Is Formal Social Participation Associated with Cognitive Function in Middle-Aged and Older Adults? A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of Longitudinal Studies.

This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between formal social participation and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults using data from longitudinal studies. A comprehensive search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science for longitudinal studies that assessed the association between formal social participation and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults published between January 2010 to 19 August 2022. Risk of bias was judged using the RoBANS tool. Meta-analysis using a random-effects model was computed with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for cognitive decline probability. Sensitivity analyses were made to explore any changes to the pooled statistical heterogeneity and pooled effect size. Certainty of evidence was judged using the GRADE framework. We included 15 studies comprising 136,397 participants from 5 countries. Meta-analyses showed that formal social participation was associated with reduced cognitive decline (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.75-0.82, p < 0.001), with very low certainty of evidence. Formal social participation appears to enhance cognition in middle-aged and older adults, but further high-quality research is needed given the very low certainty of evidence.

A community-based modified sport program for rural community-dwelling older adults: A pilot study.

With Australia's ageing population, especially in rural regions, promoting physical activity among older adults is crucial. To identify factors influencing participation of older adults (60 years or over) from a rural community in a modified sport program and assess satisfaction with a pilot modified sport program informed by these findings. Insights and ideas from two focus groups exploring community perspectives on a modified sport program informed the development of a six-week pilot modified sport program delivered with the local fitness centre. Post-program surveys assessed participant satisfaction, willingness to continue, and likelihood of recommending the program to others. Nine participants attended the focus groups, highlighting increased social connection, health management, and healthy ageing as key motivators. Joint and health concerns, cost, and time constraints emerged as main barriers. Preferences for the program included weekly sessions, alternating sports, indoor venues, and supporting modifications, but maintaining traditional rules. Thirteen participants participated in the pilot modified sport program. There was strong program attendance (86%). All participants (13/13) rated their satisfaction as very satisfied. They were highly likely to recommend the program to others (8.5/10) and were interested in continuing modified sport after the pilot (7.7/10). This study demonstrates for the first time that modified sport is of interest to older people in the rural setting, and that delivering such a program is feasible in a small community. Rural communities implementing modified sport should consider the availability of suitable facilities and equipment, access to an engaging facilitator and participant cost. Through a strong connection between the health service and community fitness centre, a modified sport program was developed and implemented, well-attended and enjoyed by participants in a rural community.

Association between participation in adult education and subjective wellbeing among older adults: the mediating roles of social isolation and digital isolation and the moderating roles of educational level

ABSTRACT Participation in adult education is a crucial component of the active aging framework. However, there have been limited studies exploring the association between participation in adult education and subjective wellbeing among older adults. Furthermore, the underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms in this association have not been extensively investigated. This study aims to explore the mediating roles of physical and digital isolation, as well as the moderating roles of educational level. A sample of 7,602 older adults (M = 70.97, SD = 7.13) was drawn from the 2018 wave of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the mediating and moderating roles. The results revealed that participation in adult education is positively associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and lower levels of loneliness among older adults. Both physical isolation and digital isolation play mediating roles in these associations. Moreover, educational level moderates the association between participation in adult education and older adults’ life satisfaction and loneliness. The linkages are significant for older adults with lower levels of education, but not significant for those with higher levels of education. These findings contribute to current knowledge and offer practical implications for improving older adults’ subjective wellbeing through participation in adult education.

Losing Ground Following Community Exercise Program Closures: A Qualitative Descriptive Study of the Impact of COVID-19 Related Pandemic Restrictions on Exercise Participation, Physical Activity, and Health of Older Adults with Balance and Mobility Limitations

Purpose: To understand the impact of COVID-19-related closures of community-based exercise programs (CBEPs) on exercise participation, physical activity, and health of older adults with balance and mobility limitations; facilitators, and barriers to exercise and physical activity; and preferred support from recreation centres and healthcare providers. Method: This qualitative descriptive study involved semi-structured interviews with seven older adults (aged 50–76 years) with balance and mobility limitations, enrolled in CBEPs at a recreation centre in a suburban area in Canada prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a thematic analysis. Results: One major theme, losing ground in the absence of structured exercise, was identified. Despite engaging in alternative at-home or outdoor activities, participants perceived a worsening of their balance and mobility, dissatisfaction with the extent of exercises and physical activity, and loss of social connectedness. Participants desired structured, individualized exercise resources, and frequent check-ins from exercise instructors to stay physically active during program suspension. Conclusions: Following CBEP closures, older adults with balance and mobility limitations from a single recreation centre perceived declines in physical and mental health, exercise participation and social interaction, and desired personalized exercises and communication from exercise instructors. The small sample size may have limited achievement of saturation.

Adverse childhood experiences, sarcopenia, and social participation in older adults: a cohort study

ObjectivesTo examine the relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and developing sarcopenia in older adults and the modifying effects of active social participation.MethodsThis prospective cohort study used survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including baseline surveys from 2011, follow-up data from 2013, follow-up data from 2015, and information on ACEs from the 2014 Life History Survey. Information concerning 10 ACEs, including five threat-related ACEs and five deprivation-related ACEs before 17 years of age was obtained by questionnaires through face-to-face interviews. Sarcopenia status was assessed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 algorithm, consisted of low muscle mass, and low muscle strength, or poor physical performance. The relationship between ACEs, social participation, and sarcopenia was evaluated using Cox proportional hazard regression models.ResultsThe study population comprised 6859 older adults in main analyses. Having experienced ≥ 3 ACEs led to an increased 31% risk of developing sarcopenia (hazard ratio [HR]:1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.10–1.56). Participants having experienced ≥ 2 threat-related ACEs (HR:1.22, 95%CI:1.04–1.43) or deprivation-related ACEs (HR:1.22, 95%CI:1.02–1.46) had a 22% higher risk of developing sarcopenia. Active social participation significantly modified the association between ACEs (p < 0.05), especially threat-related ACEs (p < 0.05), and sarcopenia.ConclusionsACEs were associated with the development of sarcopenia; however, social participation had a modifying effect. These findings provide insights for early identification of vulnerable groups, advance intervention timing, and highlight the benefits of promoting active social participation among individuals with sarcopenia who have experienced ACEs.

Creativity, aging, context and culture: Reimagining creativity in everyday life in older adults

Despite increasing interest in creative aging, little connection has been made between creative aging research and research and theory on creativity. In part 1 of this paper, we will explain why 20th century psychological concepts of creativity were inadequate to describe the impact of creative participation for older adults, and how those theories promoted stereotypes of aging. In part 2, we discuss theory and research from gerontologists on why creative activities are important, and how more inclusive theories of creativity can guide researchers in their quest to determine how creative participation can benefit older adults, and the culture at large. Sociocultural theories of creativity highlight the importance of culture and context as essential components of creativity. For example, sociocultural creativity theory argues that the cultural artifacts called crafts deserve to be considered “creative” even if they do not seem particularly novel. Crafts, which are frequently created by older people, especially women, are cultural artifacts or heirlooms that can hold meaning for generations. Sociocultural theory can guide the study of late life creativity to expand the possibilities for meaningful engagement in creativity across the lifespan.

The influence of motivation on the activeness of elderly people with hypertension in prolanis gymnastics activities

Introduction: Population ageing is one of the significant challenges in modern society, with the increasing number of elderly populations. Prevention and management of health conditions have become very important, and the Prolanis gymnastics program has been recognized as one of the effective methods. Motivation plays a central role in shaping health behaviours and habits. Methods: This research is quantitative with an analytical design with a sectional study design approach. The population in this study was all Prolanis Participants suffering from Hypertension, with the number of samples in the survey 41 respondents. The sampling technique used in this study was accidental sampling. Results: The Chi-square Statistical test on the influence of motivation on the participation of older adults with Hypertension in prolonged gymnastics activities obtained a p-value = 0.000 or smaller than a = 0.05 (0.000&lt;0.05). Conclusions: The influence of motivation on the activeness of older adults with Hypertension in protagonist gymnastics activities. Motivation influences the activeness of older adults with Hypertension in prolantic gymnastics activities. High motivation can be an essential factor in encouraging active participation in prolanist gymnastics programs, which in turn can support the management of hypertensive conditions and improve the well-being of older people. However, it is essential to remember that these conclusions are general and cannot be taken as absolute truth without supporting data and evidence.
