The Utilization of Sociometric Tests in Identifying School Integration Challenges Among Students with Immigrant Parents.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how sociometric relationships are configured within the primary and secondary school group that have immigrant parents. The analysis of the specialized literature was carried out based on clear selection criteria, both chronologically and of the variables. Statistical analyses, including correlations and frequency calculations, were conducted for the research variables. The study also clarifies certain procedural aspects in the application of sociometric tests. Our study included four school groups, two with 4th-grade students and two with pre-adolescent high school students. Parental emigration is a phenomenon that can have significant negative effects on the school integration of children who are left behind. They may experience emotional stress and anxiety that can affect their school performance. Some may also face financial difficulties, resulting in material shortages necessary to participate in school activities. The overload of tasks and household responsibilities can lead to their stigmatization in school groups. Our study examined three dimensions of school integration: partnership in work activities, participation in leisure time activities, and leadership within the group. The results of the research indicate a poor sociometric positioning for the children of emigrants, who are often rejected by the group for work activities, ignored in terms of spending free time, and overlooked for leadership roles within the group. Even if there are situations where some of them gain followers, they are also among the students rejected by the group. Differential associations of leisure music engagement with resilience: A network analysis.

Several factors associated with resilience as the maintenance of mental health despite stress exposure can be strengthened through participation in leisure time activities. Since many people listen to or make music in their leisure time, the aim of the present study was to provide insights into the architecture of how resilience relates to passive and active music engagement. 511 participants regularly listening to and/or making music completed an online survey on resilient outcomes (i.e., mental health and stressor recovery ability), different resilience factors (e.g., optimism, social support), quantitative music engagement (i.e., time spent with music listening/making) and qualitative music engagement (i.e., use of music listening/making for mood regulation). Bivariate correlations showed that subjects spending more time with music making reported better stressor recovery ability and less mental health problems, while partial correlational network analysis revealed no unique associations for quantitative music engagement. Regarding qualitative music engagement, people using music-based mood regulation reported lower mental health, mindfulness, and optimism, but also higher social support. A more heterogeneous pattern emerged for single music-based mood regulation strategies. Our findings highlight the importance of the individual (mal-)adaptive use of music, painting a more nuanced picture of music engagement and resilience.

Participation in Sports Clubs during College Is an Important Factor Associated with School Counselors' Participation in Leisure Time Activities.

This study explored the physical activity participation, barriers to physical activity, attitudes toward physical activity, and physical activity levels of full-time school counselors at junior high schools in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire. A total of 156 questionnaires were distributed, 137 were returned, and 130 were valid. The reliability and constructed validity of the questionnaire were analyzed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and factor analysis, respectively. The participants’ International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) scores were estimated to assess their physical activity levels. Simple and multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the effects of independent variables on the respondents’ physical activity levels and attitude toward physical activity. Of the respondents surveyed, 44.6%, 36.9%, and 18.5% had low, moderate, and high levels of physical activity according to their IPAQ scores, respectively. In total, 55.4% of the school counselors met the World Health Organization criteria for physical activity. Moreover, the results of the Kruskal–Wallis test showed that respondents with high levels of physical activity, aged ≥41, and who perceived themselves to be healthy were more likely to have participated in sports clubs during their college years. Furthermore, participation in sports clubs during college years and self-perceived health were significant predictors of attitude toward physical activity. In conclusion, participation in sports clubs during college was an important factor related to school counselors’ physical activity.

PARTICIPATION IN LEISURE-TIME ACTIVITIES AND THE BODY MASS INDEX OF STUDENTS IN A TERTIARY INSTITUTION IN EKITI STATE, NIGERIA

<p>The rate at which obesity is increasing among tertiary institution students in Nigeria is alarming. Physical inactivity, consumption of energy-dense foods, and sitting down for long hours are some of the risk factors for obesity that have been commonly reported among them. To reduce the risk of obesity, participation in leisure-time activities (LTA) is essential. This study was therefore carried out to determine the extent to which tertiary institution students engage in LTA and the relationship this has with their body mass index (BMI). A correlational research was carried out among 220 students selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure from Ekiti State University (EKSU) Nigeria. A self-developed, validated questionnaire was used to collect the data on respondents’ demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and frequency of participation in LTA. Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between participation in LTA and BMI. All inferences were made at 0.05 level of significance. The majority (80%) of the respondents had a moderate level of participation in LTA. Also, leisure-time reading (Mean=3.30, SD=1.3) and watching TV/ listening to the news (Mean=2.90, SD=1.4), were the most commonly performed LTA among respondents. Lower BMI was associated with the participation in LTA that is rigorous in nature, while higher BMI was associated with the LTA that is sedentary in nature. This study revealed that participating in LTA that is rigorous in nature helps to maintain a normal body mass index better than LTA that is sedentary in nature. The findings of this study will go a long way in providing useful information to the physical and health education teams on the differences in the influence of sedentary and rigorous LTAs on the health of tertiary institution students. Trends in Leisure-Time Activity Participation Among Young-Old Adults in China

Engagement of leisure activities is highly associated with health and wellbeing in later life. In this study, we examined the trends of leisure activity engagement in young-old adults aged 65–74 in China for a 16-year period. Panel data for a nationally representative sample of young-old adults were obtained from the 2002–2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Findings revealed that, compared with 2002, young-old adults in subsequent years were less likely to engage in any form of social leisure activity. The odds of participating in social events, regular exercise, and outdoor activities decreased most prominently over time, while downward trends in tourism and joining outdoor activities showed signs of reversal post-2014. In contrast, trends for engaging in home-bound and solitary leisure activities generally increased. The future elderly in China have generally tended towards solitary leisure activities over time and public health interventions are required to reverse such trends.

The aim of the study is to reveal the behavior of men and women to evaluate their leisure time during the pandemic process. In addition, it is to determine the frequency of participation of men and women in recreational activities. In the universe of Turkey determined by the snowball method of non-probability sampling methods the sample of the research consisted of 628 people. The survey technique from quantitative research methods was applied in the research. 11 hypotheses have been developed for thepurpose of the research. According to the results of the study, it was determined that there is a statistically significant difference between women's marital status, age, education, income and occupation and men's leisure-time behaviors only according to age variables (p<0,05). Differ was found between the frequency of participation in leisure time activities of women and men. According to the frequency of participation in leisure time activities of women and men, the most significant difference appears in activities I listen to music, I watch TV series / movies and I spend time with my family. In terms of men, the most significant difference emerged in the activity I watch sports competition.

Regular participation in leisure time activities and high cardiovascular fitness improve motor sequence learning in older adults

IntroductionOlder adults show higher interindividual performance variability during the learning of new motor sequences than younger adults. It is largely unknown what factors contribute to this variability. This study aimed to, first, characterize age differences in motor sequence learning and, second, examine influencing factors for interindividual performance differences.Method30 young adults (age M = 21.89, SD = 2.08, 20 female) and 29 older adults (age M = 69.55, SD = 3.03, 18 female) participated in the study. Motor sequence learning was assessed with a discrete sequence production (DSP) task, requiring key presses to a sequence of visual stimuli. Three DSP practice phases (á 8 blocks × 16 sequences, two six-element sequences) and two transfer blocks (new untrained sequences) were performed. Older participants conducted the Mini-Mental Status Examination and a visuospatial working-memory task. All participants finished a questionnaire on everyday leisure activities and a cardiovascular fitness test.ResultsPerformance speed increased with practice in both groups, but young improved more than older adults (significant Group × Time effect for response time, F(1,5) = 4.353, p = 0.004, eta_{p}^{2} = 0.071). Accuracy did not change in any age group (non-significant Group × Time effect for error rates, F(1,5) = 2.130, p = 0.091, eta_{p}^{2} = 0.036). Older adults revealed lower transfer costs for performance speed (significant Time × Group effect, e.g., simple sequence, F(1,2) = 10.511, p = 0.002, eta_{p}^{2} = 0.156). High participation in leisure time activities (β = − 0.58, p = 0.010, R2 = 0.45) and high cardiovascular fitness (β = − 0.49, p = 0.011, R2 = 0.45) predicted successful motor sequence learning in older adults.DiscussionResults confirmed impaired motor learning in older adults. Younger adults seem to show a better implicit knowledge of the practiced sequences compared to older adults. Regular participation in leisure time activities and cardiovascular fitness seem to prevent age-related decline and to facilitate motor sequence performance and motor sequence learning in older adults.

Participation in leisure-time activities and the role of individual factors in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy

Background/Aims This study evaluated the role of individual factors of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy in the prediction of leisure participation. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used. A group of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy were selected to complete the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment. Participants' cognitive levels were assessed based on the Study of Participation of Children with Cerebral Palsy Living in Europe estimated cognitive levels. Findings The models could best predict up to 31.8% of the variance in the participation rates, 28.4% of the variance in the frequency scores and 33.5% of the variance in the enjoyment scores of leisure domains. The type of cerebral palsy was one of the most significant predictive factors of leisure participation (β ranged from −0.177 to −0.525 for quadriplegia). Conclusions Therapists and rehabilitation specialists may consider individual factors to predict a proportion of leisure participation subscales before planning for interventions aimed at promoting the leisure participation of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.

Economic and modelling techniques used to value the health benefits of engaging in physical activity in green and blue spaces: a systematic review

BackgroundMany environmental initiatives to improve the physical and mental health of the public are now being evaluated to determine the extent of their effect on quality of life and cost to public commissioners and decision makers. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the econometric techniques and modelling used to estimate the value of the health benefits of engagement in physical activity in green and blue spaces. MethodsFollowing PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review protocol was developed. The Cochrane Database and Library, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, ASSIA, CINAHL, DARE, and EED were searched for articles published between Jan 1, 1998, and Feb 16, 2018 (see appendix for search terms and inclusion and exclusion criteria). Article screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts was conducted by three independent reviewers to minimise bias and ensure rigour. All papers meeting the criteria were critically appraised for methodological quality by two independent researchers with a Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. After data extraction, descriptive thematic analysis was conducted and synthesised to answer the research question: what modelling techniques have been implemented to investigate the value of the health benefits of nature-based interventions? This review is registered on PROSPERO, number CRD42018103155. FindingsOf 6130 articles retrieved, six met the inclusion criteria. The evidence was critically appraised under two themes: stated preference methods and economic outcome. Evidence synthesis of the econometric techniques and modelling indicated that stated preference techniques and modelling captured preference heterogeneity and provided insights on the effects of the impact of different policy options on engagement in physical activity willingness to pay estimates publics' value for the green and blue spaces. InterpretationStated preference techniques are proficient econometric approaches to capture the use, welfare effects, and benefits transfer value associated with recreational activities in green and blue spaces. Estimates of willingness to pay reflect the public perceived health benefits associated with participation in leisure time activities; the public are willing to pay to gain health benefits but are not willing to relinquish the experience. Economic results indicate that access to leisure pursuits in green spaces even in urban environments can have physical and mental health benefits, improved health behaviours, and facilitate greater social cohesion. Who makes use of activities and events organized by a consumer organization in the Swiss tetraplegia population?

Persons with a physical disability are at risk of exclusion from general leisure and tourism activities that are beneficial for personal development, recovery, psychological and physical well-being, quality of life, as well as social inclusion. To overcome barriers to participation, many consumer organisations offer leisure and travel events that are tailored to the specific needs of these persons. Yet, objective evidence regarding the effectiveness of such services is limited. We thus evaluated participation among persons with a tetraplegic spinal cord injury (SCI), who were as members of the consumer organization ‘Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPA)’ systematically invited to make use of holiday and cultural events. The study utilized prospective data from two databases: self-reported data from the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Cohort Community Survey 2012 (SwiSCI) and objective data on participation in non-sportive leisure time activities during the period 2012-2017 from the SP YA. We included all subjects with tetraplegia, aged ≥16 years who are SPA members and resident in Switzerland. Univariable and multivariable regression modelling was employed to evaluate determinants of participation. Out of 344 eligible participants 42 (12.2%) participated in any non-sportive events organized by the SPA between 2012 and 2017. Preliminary analyses showed that having a partner and traumatic SCI as origin were associated with increased participation in leisure time activity. In multivariable regression analysis those participants with a partner were twice as likely to participate in any SPA event (trend). Differentiation between cultural events and holidays will be analysed separately and provide additional information. This analysis belongs to one of the rare studies analysing participation in non-sportive leisure time activities in tetraplegics using objective data on participation. Having a partner was the most informative determinant for participation. This information may be highly relevant for the SPA to tailor their offers according to the needs of their customer.

Cognitive Reserve Hypothesis in Frontotemporal Dementia: Evidence from a Brain SPECT Study in a Series of Greek Frontotemporal Dementia Patients

Background and Objective: Cognitive reserve (CR) mediates the clinical expression of brain pathology in Alzheimer’s disease, while there are much less relevant data in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In the present study we examined whether CR, measured using the Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI), correlated with regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in Greek FTD patients. Methods: Eighty FTD patients, i.e., 47 with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD) and 33 with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), were enrolled into this study. CR was assessed using the CRI questionnaire, which provides a total score (CRI) and 3 subscores, i.e., CRI-education, CRI-working activity, and CRI-leisure time. The FTD-Clinical Dementia Rating Scale was used to assess the severity of dementia and a brain SPECT study was performed to measure rCBF. Finally, multiple regression analyses were conducted to explore correlations between CR indices and frontotemporal rCBF. Results: In both the bvFTD and the PPA groups, higher scores in the CRI, CRI-education, and CRI-leisure time correlated with lower rCBF in the bilateral frontal and left temporal cortex, respectively, controlling for age, sex, time since symptom onset, and disease severity. Conclusion: In the present study, lifetime participation in leisure time activities was found to mitigate the burden of disease in bvFTD and PPA patients. Moreover, FTD patients with a higher educational attainment were able to cope better with greater brain damage. Determination of the most suitable activities to build an adequate level of CR is crucial for dementia prevention.

Leisure-time youth centres as health-promoting settings: Experiences from multicultural neighbourhoods in Sweden.

The aim of this paper is to advocate for the importance of meaningful leisure time for young people from a health-promotion perspective using experiences from two youth centres in multicultural neighbourhoods in Sweden. In this practice-based study, data were collected between 2012 and 2014 at two youth centres in multicultural, socially deprived suburbs in Sweden using surveys with 12- to 16-year-old adolescents ( n = 207), seven individual interviews with staff and three cooperation partners in the neighbourhoods, and six group interviews with adolescents (50% girls). Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods were used for analysis. As part of the youth centres' strategies, they are open and inclusive, foster supportive relationships, emphasise youth empowerment, and integrate family, school and community in their work. The youth centres are health-promoting settings with regard to four of the action areas in the Ottawa Charter: build healthy public policy, create supportive environments, strengthen community actions and develop personal skills. There is a need for a variety and a combination of various structured and unstructured leisure-time activities because young people's background and life situation plays a role for their participation in leisure-time activities. We conclude that youth centres are well placed to be or to become health-promoting settings if the activities takes place in a structured environment.

Over-optimistic patient expectations of recovery and leisure activities after arthroscopic meniscus surgery

Background and purpose — Patients’ expectations of outcomes following arthroscopic meniscus surgery are largely unknown. We investigated patients’ expectations concerning recovery and participation in leisure-time activities after arthroscopic meniscus surgery and the postoperative fulfillment of these.Patients and methods — The study sample consisted of 491 consecutively recruited patients (mean age 50 (SD 13) years, 55% men) who were assigned for arthroscopy on suspicion of meniscus injury and later verified by arthroscopy. Before surgery, patients completed questionnaires regarding their expectations of recovery time and postoperative participation in leisure activities. 3 months after surgery, the patients completed questionnaires on their actual level of leisure activity and their degree of satisfaction with their current knee function. We analyzed differences between the expected outcome and the actual outcome, and between fulfilled/exceeded expectations and satisfaction with knee function.Results — 478 patients (97%) completed the follow-up. 91% had expected to be fully recovered within 3 months. We found differences between patients’ preoperative expectations of participation in leisure activities postoperatively and their actual participation in these, with 59% having unfulfilled expectations (p < 0.001). Satisfaction with current knee function was associated with expectations of leisure activities being fulfilled/exceeded.Interpretation — In general, patients undergoing arthroscopic meniscus surgery were too optimistic regarding their recovery time and postoperative participation in leisure activities. This highlights the need for shared decision making which should include giving the patient information on realistic expectations of recovery time and regarding participation in leisure-time activities after meniscal surgery.

What motives are important for participation in leisure-time activities at Swedish youth centres?

Objective: This study aimed to explore the motives of young people in multicultural suburbs for participating in youth-centre activities. Design and setting: The study employed practice-based research with a focus on collaboration and methodological diversity. Data on motives for participation were collected in spring 2013 at two non-governmental organisation (NGO)-run youth centres located in the suburbs of two cities in Sweden using surveys and focus-group interviews. Method: The study used mixed methods, with qualitative data being used to help explain initial quantitative findings. Statistical analysis was conducted using measures of competence and social motives. Qualitative analysis used both deductive and inductive content analysis. Results: Study findings suggest that motives concerning competence development and socialising are insufficient to account for why young people in multicultural, socially disadvantaged suburbs participate in youth-centre activities. The study highlights the importance of additional motives influencing participation in leisure-time activities. The additional motives of ‘fun/undemanding’ and ‘support’ were found to be important to most young people in this study. Conclusion: Study findings suggest that motives for participation in youth-centre activities have to do with characteristics of the participants, of the neighbourhood in which the centre is located and the specific type of unstructured leisure-time activity. Future motive measurement scales should include items concerning socioeconomic status, activities provided and young people’s degree of influence over the activities in which they participate.

Adaptation of the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire (CRIq) for the Greek population.

Cognitive reserve (CR) is thought to reflect the cumulative brain potential derived from various cognitively demanding activities throughout the entire life. It seems to mediate both one's cognitive performance and clinical expression of different brain pathologies, such as Alzheimer's disease. Many researchers have tried to assess CR by using proxies, such as educational and occupational level, participation in leisure time activities and intelligence, alone or in various combinations. Recently, a new tool for measuring CR status was constructed, the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq), comprising of all known CR proxies. CRIq also takes into account the amount of time spent during each of these activities, thus capturing the core idea behind CR theory: its active day to day formulation during all age stages. Aim of the present study was to adapt CRIq for the Greek population. The questionnaire was administered to 591 participants (age range 18-89) stratified in three age groups (young adults, middle-aged, elderly). The middle-aged group showed higher total CRI as well as CRI-Education, CRI-WorkingActivity and CRI-LeisureTime scores compared to both other groups, reflecting more years of engagement in all activities. Gender also influenced CRI scores, with men scoring higher than women, again resulting from historical and social perspectives. Overall, the CRIq showed satisfactory internal consistency, was easy to administer and its adaptation process provided solid and interpretable results. The Greek version of CRIq enriches existing dementia research methodology and allows for valid results in an ever growing field.

Walkable scores for selected three east Texas counties: physical activity and policy implications

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Introduction:&lt;/strong&gt; Physical activity has become an important intervention against overweight and obesity cases in the USA and worldwide. One key aspect of physical activity is walking, which has been identified as a component that can easily be incorporated into one’s lifestyle. Recent studies on physical activity have focused on promoting walking as a health enhancing endeavor. In 2010, the proportion of Texas adults who reported no participation in leisure time activity (26.7%) was significantly higher than the national average (24.4%). However, many Texans, like most Americans, are sedentary.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Purpose:&lt;/strong&gt; This study examined the walkability of the environments in selected counties in east Texas including Wood, Van Zandt and Smith counties.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Methods and material:&lt;/strong&gt; The data was drawn from the Walkscore.com and was based on all the zip codes in the three counties in east Texas. The community capitals were used a framework for analysis. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Results:&lt;/strong&gt; Only three (8.82%) zip codes had walkable scores between 70 and 89; five (14.71%) had scores between 50 and 69; four (11.76%) between 25 and 49 and 22 (64.71%) had a score below 24.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Discussion:&lt;/strong&gt; The vast majority (26, 76.47%) of zip codes are highly dependent on vehicle transport.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Conclusions and recommendations:&lt;/strong&gt; Stakeholders need therefore to focus on causes for the minimal walkability so that practical interventions are generated to enhance the physical activity friendly infrastructure so as to enhance the well-being of the residents in these three east Texas counties.&lt;/p&gt;

Rotating night shift work and physical activity of nurses and midwives in the cross-sectional study in Łódź, Poland

Shift work have been thought to restrict participation in leisure time activities, but the knowledge about physical activity in rotating night shift nurses has been limited so far. We investigated the associations between the rotating night shift work and physical activity using data from a cross-sectional study among nurses and midwives. This study included 354 nurses and midwives (aged 40–60) currently working rotating night shifts and 371 ones working days only. The information on the work characteristics and potential covariates was collected via a personal interview. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Physical activity was assessed according to the international questionnaire on physical activity – IPAQ, and four domains: leisure time, occupational, transport related and household were analyzed. Women who reported none leisure time activity were defined as recreationally “inactive”. The associations were examined with multiple linear or logistic regression models adjusted for age, season of the year, number of full term births, marital status and BMI. Total and occupational physical activity was significantly higher among nurses working rotating night shifts. However, leisure time activity was significantly affected among rotating night shift nurses and midwives, compared to women working during the days only, with increased odds ratio for recreational “inactivity” (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.11–2.20). Rotating night shift work among nurses and midwives is associated with higher occupational physical activity but lower leisure time activity. Initiatives supporting exercising among night shift workers are recommended.

Assessment of the relationship between the engagement in leisure time and academic motivation among the students of faculty of education

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between leisure time motivation and academic motivation among the students who studied at the Faculty of Education of Mustafa Kemal University. 260 students (X years : 21.29±2.11) constituted the sample of the study. For the analyses of the data; Leisure Motivation Scale and Academic Motivation Scale were employed. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation test and regression analysis. According to the findings of the study; it was explored that academic motivation was significantly correlated with the leisure motivation scale's subscales of intrinsic motivation toward knowledge and accomplishment (r=0.360), experience stimulation (r=0.219) and introjected and identified regulations (r=0.212; p<0.05). Also; the leisure motivation scale's subscales of motivation toward knowledge and accomplishment accounted for 13% of academic motivation. In light of these findings; it may be concluded that there was a correlation between academic motivation and intrinsic motivation (toward knowledge and accomplishment, and experience stimulation) and more autonomous types of extrinsic motivation (introjected and identified regulations). As a result of the regression analysis; engagement in leisure time activities for knowledge and accomplishment significantly accounted for academic motivation. In sum; it may be interpreted that participation in leisure time activities with more intrinsic reasons may yield more positive results.
