Coming home in the context of very early supported discharge after stroke – An interview study of patients’ experiences

ObjectivesTo explore patients’ experiences of coming home and managing everyday life within the context of very early supported discharge after stroke (VESD). Study designAn explorative qualitative study using semi structured interviews. MethodThis study was nested within a randomised controlled trial,; Gothenburg Very Early Supported Discharge (GOTVED), comparing a home rehabilitation intervention given by a coordinated team (VESD) with conventional care. Eleven participants with a median age 70.0 years (range 63-95) of which nine scoring 0-4 on the NIHSS indicating no symptoms or minor stroke were interviewed on average 12 days after discharge. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. ResultsThe diversity of patients’ experiences was reflected in the overarching main theme Very Early Supported Discharge after stroke - a multifaceted experience, built upon five themes: “Conditions surrounding the discharge”, “Concerns about the condition”, “Confronting a new everyday life”, “Experiences of the intervention” and the “Role of next of kin”. ConclusionsThe respondents were largely satisfied with the very early supported discharge which might be expected, given that it was well planned regarding timing, individualisation and content. The patients need to be aware of the purpose of the VESD intervention. Due to the unpredictability of the stroke and its consequences, interventions need to be flexible. Goal setting is important but must be comprehensible. The role and burden of next of kin should be addressed and negotiated, and the ending of the intervention must be planned, with seamless transition to further rehabilitation and social support including the issue of participation in everyday life.

Children's participation in everyday life: An international overview

AbstractMuch of the research on children's right to participation has focused on formal settings, with less attention given to everyday contexts. The current study explores the scope of children's participation in everyday life in the family, school and community. Based on a sample of 46 000 children from 32 countries, children's participation was found to vary across the different contexts. Moreover, the quality of the children's relationships with adults was found to be positively related to the degree of their participation. Finally, some cross‐national differences were found.

How does the UK public think and feel about people with visual impairment: a review of existing evidence.

Despite legislation to protect people with visual impairment (V.I.) from discrimination in the United Kingdom (UK), the latter continue to experience overt and covert negative behaviours. Perceived discrimination has been associated with an adverse impact on identity, health and well-being, while negative attitudes have been identified as the biggest barrier to participation in everyday life. This article provides a narrative review of existing evidence of how the UK public treats (behaviours), thinks (perceptions) and feels (attitudes) about people with V.I. Despite limitations, the findings suggest that there is a gap between the behaviours reported by people with V.I. and the attitudes expressed by members of the UK public. Social psychological theories are used to explore possible reasons for this gap, and ways in which it may be addressed. As such, the article provides an example of how social psychological theories can be used to address problems in an applied context.

An Occupational Perspective on Psychedelic Therapy: A Scoping Review.

Background. Interest in the use of psychedelics for mental health therapy is burgeoning. Qualitative research methods are increasingly used to understand patient's experiences; however, there is a lack of literature that explores psychedelic use from an occupational perspective. Purpose. To conduct a scoping review of qualitative literature on the experiences of psychedelic use for the purpose of mental health therapy, through an occupational lens. Key Issues. Wilcock's occupational perspective of health was employed to analyze the use of psychedelics in mental health from an occupational perspective. Despite heterogeneous therapy contexts and substances used, patients reported comparable benefits regarding occupational engagement, such as increased mindfulness and autonomy in doing, a renewed sense of being, greater motivation to grow and become, and an improved sense of connection and belonging. Implications. This review demonstrates how psychedelic use in the context of mental health support can be experienced as a meaningful occupation and may contribute to overall health. In turn, this review highlights the utility of an occupational perspective for "non-sanctioned" or stigmatized occupations like psychedelic use, as well as the need for more research on psychedelic use from an occupational perspective. Using an occupational perspective of health can help to de-stigmatize psychedelic use as a meaningful occupation, rather than a deviant one, and shed light on how psychedelics may also positively impact one's participation in everyday life and overall health.

Experiences of the Redesigning Daily Occupation programme – a qualitative study among persons with neurological diseases

Background The Redesigning Daily Occupations (ReDO) is a programme targeting persons who need to restructure activities and routines to achieve a healthier balance in everyday life. Issues that often is needed for persons with neurological diseases. Aims/Objectives To describe how persons with neurological disease experienced the ReDo-programme and to investigate how their occupational patterns and fatigue changed during the programme. Material and Methods A mixed method study with a convergent parallel design including ten participants. Questionnaires and individual semi-structured interviews have been used and data analysed by descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results The findings indicated an increased participation in everyday life after the intervention. Furthermore, the main theme showed that the intervention enabled reflections and new insight. Sub-themes included: feeling pressured to perform, being part of a group and changing occupational pattern. Conclusions Participants valued being a group; however, they experienced the intensity as being too high. The content of the intervention enabled reflections and new insights regarding their occupational pattern, which was experienced as a starting point towards behavioural changes and re-prioritisation of occupations in everyday life. Significance A modified version with lower intensity and careful goal setting might be valuable for persons with neurological diseases.

MOTIVATION, ATTITUDES AND HABITS IN CULTURAL PARTICIPATION AMONG VISITORS TO VISUAL ARTS INSTITUTIONS

In this paper we analyze culture as integral aspect of everyday life and the ways culture is actualized through cultural participation. The research presented in this paper is part of the Center for Designing the Everyday project, which aims to explore the current state and possibilities for establishing a new model of participatory governance in culture based on the model of participatory democracy. In this research, designed and conducted to assess the state of cultural participation at two intervals over a two-year period, the aim was to determine whether there are differences in the types of participation and motivations for participation in cultural events and activities before and after initiatives aimed at reinforcing the model of participatory governance. The paper draws on three conceptual turns, namely postmodern, cultural, and participatory, to examine the repositioning of cultural participation in everyday life. Two surveys were undertaken in 2018 and 2020, targeting an intentional sample of visitors to cultural institutions and associations operating in the field of visual arts. Given the specific timeframe, the results are interpreted in the context of the pandemic. Results imply strengthening of cultural participation connected to cultural consumption, while participation connected to cultural production is decaling. Furthermore, interactive cultural participation in digital and virtual environment indicates inequalities among different social groups especially when it comes to elderly population that has proven to be vulnerable in terms of frequency and availability of interactive cultural participation. Co-production of a rehabilitation programme for young adult cancer survivors

Introduction: Globally, the focus on user involvement in health research has increased substantially. In Denmark, it is still at an early stage, with individual researchers being met with increasing demands without having much experience, guidance, or good practices to act upon. We are a group of researchers affiliated with User Perspectives and Community-based Interventions at the University of Southern Denmark and the Center for Research with Patients and Relatives (ForSa-P) at the Odense University Hospital. We work with patients and relatives in several aspects of our work – research and teaching; we share our experiences and learning in a joint session.
 This presentation describes a co-creation process of developing a rehabilitation programme for young adult cancer survivors (YACS)
 Background: Because of the cancer and late effects of treatment, YACS face numerous age-specific physical, psychological, existential, and social issues impacting participation in everyday life and decreasing their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Rehabilitation may improve participation in life roles, leisure activities and work and thus, heighten HRQoL. However, YACS rehabilitation needs are not being adequately met and multicomponent age-specific rehabilitation for YACS is limited.
 Objective: To develop an evidence-based, age-specific, multicomponent, and peer-based rehabilitation programme involving YACS and relevant stakeholders aiming to improve YACS participation in everyday life and their HRQoL.
 Methods: The development process of the programme drawn on the Medical Research Council UK framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions and is inspired by Hawkins et al.’s three-staged framework for co-production. From September 2019 to March 2023, YACS, professionals and researchers co-developed a rehabilitation programme through three stages: 1) Evidence review and stakeholder consultations; 2) Co-production of the intervention by involving users in four workshops, and 3) Articulating the programme theory, developing an intervention manual, recruitment strategy and referral pathways and selecting outcome measures. Key findings from each stage were incorporated into the subsequently stage.
 Results: We developed a comprehensive goal-oriented and peer-based rehabilitation programme called the Young Adults Taking ACtion (YATAC). The programme draws on a person-centered approach, the Social Cognitive Theory, and John Dewey’s learning theory. It consists of nine components delivered by an interdisciplinary team: 1) Need assessment, 2) Goal setting, 3) Everyday life, 4) Physical activity, 5) Psychological issues, 6) Work and education, 7) Sexuality and relationship, 8) Rights and finance, 9) Friends and Family and 10) Peer-to-peer support. Further, outcome measures for the programme were chosen, recruitment strategies were described, and referral pathways were identified. The evaluation showed advantages and disadvantages and future points to pay attention to when participating in a co-production process. 
 Conclusions: A multicomponent rehabilitation programme for YACS was developed involving the preferences and needs of YACS and stakeholders. Using co-production in the whole process of developing the programme will most likely lead to better evaluation and implementation in clinical practice. In addition, the comprehensive description of the development process and the knowledge derived from the process can inform future research of how to involve users in the development of rehabilitation interventions. Next step will be to feasibility test the programme.

Health-related quality of life and patient-centred outcomes with COVID-19 vaccination in patients with breast cancer and gynaecological malignancies.

Safety and tolerability of COVID-19 vaccines were demonstrated by several clinical trials which led to the first FDA/EMA approvals in 2021. Because of mass immunizations, most social restrictions were waived with effects on quality of life. Therefore, our a-priori hypothesis was that COVID-19 vaccination impacted the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients with breast and gynecological cancer. From March 15th until August 11th, 2022, fully vaccinated patients with breast and gynecological cancer treated in the oncological outpatient clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, LMU University Hospital, Munich, Germany filled out a vaccine related QoL survey. Patients were asked about demographics (age, comorbidities), clinical parameters related to previous COVID-19 infections, and HR-QoL related parameters (living situation, responsibilities in everyday life). Subsequently, a questionnaire with 12 items was designed using a 5-point Likert scale (0 - strongly disagree/4 - strongly agree), covering the aspects health and therapy, social environment, participation in everyday life and overall assessment. By August 11th, 2022, 108 out of 114 (94.7%) patients had received at least three doses of COVID-19 vaccine and six patients at least two doses. More than half of the surveyed patients were >55y (52.6%; mean: 55.1y, range 29-86y). Patients with breast cancer (n= 83) had early (59.0%) or metastatic cancer (41.0%); gynecological cancers (n=31) also included metastatic (54.8%) and non-metastatic cancer (45.2%). 83.3% of the patients stated that COVID-19 vaccination had a positive impact on their HR-QoL. Furthermore, 29 patients (25.4%) had undergone a COVID-19 infection. These patients reported self-limiting symptoms for a median duration of 5.9 days and no hospital admissions were registered. Our study demonstrates that vaccination against COVID-19 was positively associated with HR-QoL in patients with breast and gynecological cancer. Furthermore, vaccinated patients who underwent COVID-19 disease experienced only self-limiting symptoms.

Life after paediatric brain tumour; the perspectives of the survivors and their parents.

To explore how long-term and late effects of paediatric brain tumours influence the everyday lives of survivors at various ages and their parents. A qualitative interview study using reflexive thematic analysis. We conducted individual interviews and focus groups with 14 paediatric brain tumour survivors aged 9-52 years and 16 parents, which were audiorecorded and transcribed. We inductively analyzed the data using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. Inductively derived themes were then mapped onto the components of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework to examine the survivors' everyday functioning. All survivors experienced ongoing long-term and late effects but with considerable variations in how these restricted the survivors' functioning and thus their ability to participate in everyday life activities (e.g. social, educational and work activities). All survivors expressed an explicit focus on and use of different strategies to manage their perceived functional limitations and participation restrictions. Many survivors expressed discrepancies between their own goals, expectations and actual abilities post-cancer; making them very aware of their limitations. In addition, many survivors and parents experienced ongoing concerns about the survivors' future, including the risk of late effects, relapse or other complications. A wide range of long-term and late effects continue to affect the survivors and their parents' functioning and everyday lives. Their ongoing needs emphasize the importance of comprehensive, life-long follow-up care, as recommended. The complex challenges across the biopsychosocial realms faced by the survivors supports the call for multidisciplinary survivorship care. Nurses are well positioned to lead such care, as they are trained to provide holistic care and thereby support survivors' functioning and activity participation in everyday life. We used the COREQ guidelines when reporting the study. Two user representatives (one young adult PBT survivor and one mother of a PBT survivor) ensured the relevance and quality of the semi-structured interview guides prior to the interviews with the survivors and parents. The guides were sent to the user representatives by mail, and they provided their written feedback by mail to the first author.

The experience of living with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a qualitative evidence synthesis using meta-ethnography

BackgroundAdolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity with physical and psychosocial implications for adolescents. The aim of this qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) was to systematically search for, identify, and synthesise qualitative research in order to improve our understanding of what it is like to live with AIS and to facilitate empathetic and effective healthcare.MethodsWe systematically searched 4 databases (Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL) and used the 7 phases of meta-ethnography to synthesise qualitative evidence including studies with children and adolescents, and additional viewpoints from parents about the experience of AIS.ResultsWe distilled 7 themes. (1) Diagnosis turned time on its head revolves around the AIS diagnosis and the uncertainty of the future that accompanied it. (2) Usual activities no longer the same explores how activities and participation in everyday life are impacted by AIS. (3) Hiding my body describes the pervasive struggle with self-image and appearance. (4) I want to feel normal again explores adolescents’ desire to return to ‘normality’ and challenges of feeling different. (5) Balancing isolation and support considers the relationships in the adolescents’ lives alongside their feelings of isolation. (6) Trying to keep control of treatment decisions explores how adolescents and their parents strive to feel in control. (7) Fearing surgery yet feeling hopeful focused on the apprehension and fear around spinal surgery and the beacon of hope it represented.ConclusionsOur QES contributes to the understanding of the adolescent experience of living with AIS. From our findings, clinicians can better understand the physical and psychosocial obstacles and the challenges faced throughout the journey of AIS to inform their clinical interactions with these patients.

The intentional pursuit of everyday life while dying: A longitudinal qualitative study of working-aged adults living with advanced cancer

Background: People living with advanced cancer experience functional decline and increasing difficulty participating in activities of daily living over their final year of life, consequently reducing quality of life. Palliative rehabilitation may serve to mitigate some of these challenges by optimising function. However, limited research and theory explore the rehabilitative process of adaptation amid increasing dependency, often experienced by people living with advanced cancer. Aim: To explore the lived experience of everyday life for working-aged adults living with advanced cancer, and how this changes over time. Design: A longitudinal hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed, using in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis, and findings mapped against the Model of Human Occupation and illness experience literature. Setting/participants: Purposively sampled working-aged adults (40–64 years) with advanced cancer were recruited by a rural home care team in Western Canada. Results: Thirty-three in-depth interviews were conducted over 19 months with eight adults living with advanced cancer. Advanced cancer and other losses have a disruptive impact on daily life. Despite experiencing progressive functional decline, these adults intentionally sought to participate in valued everyday activities. Adaptation to ongoing deterioration occurred through engagement in daily life. Conclusions: Despite experiencing disruption to routines and daily life, people living with advanced cancer seek to continue doing what is important to them, albeit in a modified form. Adaptation to functional decline is an active, ongoing process and occurs through continued engagement in activities. Palliative rehabilitation can facilitate participation in everyday life.

Participation in everyday life for young people with chronic pain in Saudi Arabia: "you feel lacking in life and you feel that time is flying by".

Chronic pain is a common health problem that can have a significant impact on children and young people's daily life. Although research on pediatric chronic pain has been a priority globally, little is known about young people's experience of chronic pain in Saudi Arabia. Thus, this article reports on young people's experience of chronic pain and the impact on their lives in Saudi Arabia which forms part of a larger study. Multiple case study design following Yin's (2018) approach was used. Purposeful and theoretical sampling were used to recruit young people aged 12 to 18 who had experienced chronic pain for at least three months, their parents, and their school personnel. The young people and their parents were recruited from a tertiary hospital located on the western side of Saudi Arabia while school personnel were recruited from the schools that young people attended. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured face-to-face (n = 15) and telephone interviews (n = 25) from 40 participants (10 young people, 10 parents, and 20 school personnel). Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and translated from Arabic to English. Data were analyzed following two phases: (1) constant comparative analysis; and (2) cross-case analysis based on the work of Charmaz (2014) and Yin (2018) respectively. Young people's experiences of chronic pain were categorized into three themes: (1) experiencing chronic pain; (2) impact of pain on quality of life; and (3) everyday strategies to manage chronic pain. All young people reported that their pain was caused by a chronic condition, where the most prevalent pains were musculoskeletal/joint pain, abdominal pain, and headache/migraine. Most young people had encountered challenges with misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis as to the cause of their chronic pain. They described how their chronic pain interfered with their physical, psychological, and social functioning. They primarily managed their pain with medications and through self-care techniques. The findings also indicated that young people's generally positive attitude to their pain reflected their beliefs in Allah's power and the belief that such suffering should be borne according to their Islamic culture. Chronic pain is a significant health phenomenon that tends to restrict the participation of young people in everyday life. However young people used a range of strategies to normalize the pain so that they could continue with their everyday activities like their peers.

When Does the Patient with Low Back Pain Need Rehabilitation? Abstract. If functional impairments or participation restrictions persist in patients with low back pain after completion of acute therapy, a rehabilitation is indicated. Rehabilitation refers to the coordinated use of medical, social, professional, technical, and educational measures in order to optimize a patient's functional health and to achieve an independent participation in everyday life. Rehabilitation is also indicated when return to work is at risk, or when the affected person is unable to return to their usual work. The functional limitations of the patient require the use of an interdisciplinary team and a multimodal therapeutic approach. In addition to a function-oriented therapy, Pilates and McKenzie exercises also seem to be effective to improve functional capacities in the context of rehabilitation. On the other hand, passive modalities play only a minor role.

A scoping review of occupational therapy scoping reviews – utilisation of the WFOT proposed international occupational therapy research priority

Introduction: This study aims to map existing occupational therapy scoping reviews to identify their characteristics and highlight research priorities to help occupational therapy researchers conduct further research in the eight prioritized research areas proposed by the WFOT Delphi study. Method: The review followed the scoping review guidelines from Arksey and O'Malley (2005). Six electronic databases (PubMed, ProQuest Central, Scopus, CINAHL and AHMED, and Web of Science) were used for the search. The inclusion criteria were set as follows: written in English; related to occupational therapy and scoping reviews. Results: A total of 189 articles were mapped to the WFOT research priorities: Effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions (n = 57); evidence-based practice and knowledge translation (n = 74); healthy aging (n = 26); participation in everyday life (n = 29); occupational therapy professional issues (n = 29); community development and population (n = 10); occupational therapy and chronic conditions (n = 41); technology and occupational therapy (n = 11); and some non-categorized studies. Conclusion: Our findings also support the WFOT study findings indicating the current research focus in evidence-based practice and knowledge transition.

How did youth with cerebral palsy perceive participation in everyday life after participating in a periodical intensive rehabilitation program based on adapted physical activity in groups? A qualitative interview study

Purpose Explore how youths with CP experience participation in everyday life, their experience of having participated in a periodical intensive rehabilitation programme and their expectations for the future. Materials & methods A qualitative design that included semi-structured interviews with 14 youths with CP (mean age 17 years). Results The qualitative content analysis exposed six themes, (1) Everyday life – to get the pieces of your life to fit together, (2) Participation means inclusion and belonging – the meaning of life, (3) Individual and environmental factors influencing participation, (4) Experience of physical and social activities away from home together with like-minded people, (5) To be continued locally, and (6) You do not know the future, anything can happen – visions for the future. Conclusions Participation in everyday life increases the meaning of life but takes energy. Periodical intensive rehabilitation programme enabled youths to try new activities, make friends and increase self-insight in their own strengths and limitations. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Young people with cerebral palsy (CP) describe participation as the meaning of life and state that it is essential for inclusion and being able to contribute to society Adaptation of environmental factors including collaboration across service sectors and capacity building in young people within their preferred life situations appear to be essential A periodical intensive rehabilitation, including adapted physical activities in groups, is recommended to provide peer learning and mastery experiences in young people with CP. Young people with CP seem to have the same hopes for the future as their typically developing peers

Perceptions of a virtual reality sensory room for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities

ABSTRACT: Purpose Mental ill health and sensory processing difficulties often limit participation in everyday life for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Interventions using technology such as virtual reality (VR) are increasingly accessible and may mitigate these difficulties. Understanding what contributes to the successful implementation of novel interventions is important for future use and evaluation. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of implementing a VR sensory room for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities, their carers and support staff and to explore future iterations of the product and process. Materials and Methods Thirteen stakeholders who participated in a pilot trial of a VR sensory room were interviewed. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis. Results Eleven themes were identified which indicated that adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities found the VR sensory room to be mostly acceptable and enjoyable with usage largely consistent. Individual variation and support requirements were highlighted for each user. Future use may require modifications to the headset, in-built customisation options as well as buy-in and training for support staff. Conclusions The VR Sensory room is a promising tool to support adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and results warrant further scaled research into the impact of this tool on outcomes for adults with disabilities. Implications for Rehabilitation Whilst adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities may experience sensory processing difficulties which impact their everyday life, there is a paucity of interventions to address these difficulties. Implementation studies offer the opportunity to explore how evidence-based interventions may be implemented to facilitate the best outcomes. A Virtual Reality Sensory Room may offer an innovative alternative to a traditional sensory room for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities where implementation is well supported.

FEATURES OF FUNCTIONING DISORDERS IN PATIENTS WITH STABLE ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE

The aim: To reveal the peculiarities of functioning disorders in everyday life and the need for rehabilitation in the patients with stable ischemic heart disease (IHD). Materials and methods: Used 346 medical cards of inpatients with stable (IHD), Department of Cardiology and Cardiorehabilitation, Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 4. Research methods: collection, grouping, analysis and generalization of data from doctors’ records, medical-statistical, graphical. Results: It was established that the structure of hospitalized morbidity cases of IHD consisted of 34.7% of angina pectoris and 65.3% of cardiosclerosis. IHD was accompanied by other diseases in 92.8% of cases. It has been proven that among all cases, those with a moderate severity of functional impairment pre¬vail (25.0-49.0%). 28.9% of the patients have contraindications to physical cardiorehabilitation. The remaining the patients need a complex of rehabilitation measures, including physical rehabilitation, and patients with contraindications may use other components of cardiorehabilitation programs. Conclusions: It has been proven that patients with coronary heart disease, with or without comorbidities, experience impaired functions, reduced activity and participation in everyday life, as well as pain syndromes and painful sensations. This indicates the need for cardiac rehabilitation in the acute and post-acute periods.

Individual patterns of problems with participation, activity, body function and environment in everyday life for children who completed brain tumor treatment

Purpose The study purpose was to, with the help of ICF and the CPS model, describe and explain patterns of co-occurring problems with participation in everyday life activities, body functioning and environment for children who completed brain tumor treatment. Materials and methods Hospital, habilitation and school records for nine children (5–11 yrs.) diagnosed with brain tumor, were retrospectively reviewed for everyday problems after treatment completion. These problems were linked to ICF codes. Median code distribution within ICF constructs participation, body function, body structure, activity, and environment were calculated to generate typical (close to median) and atypical (distant from median) patterns of problems on individual and group levels. Two children were in-depth analyzed with collaborative problem-solving (CPS) model to identify participation problems and plausible explanations. Results In total, 4543 ICF linked codes revealed similarities and differences between individuals. The selected child-cases displayed educational challenges and peer-relational problems. The ICF codes related to activity, body function and environment revealed plausible explanations for the children’s documented problems with participation in everyday life. Conclusions The combination of ICF and CPS can provide a comprehensive view of the child’s problems and guide development of participation in everyday life-focused interventions for children treated for brain tumors. Implications for rehabilitation Care should be guided by interventions and support directed at individual children and their everyday life. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework can support identification of the individual child’s patterns of problems and how these affects the child’s everyday life. It is recommended to start by identifying participation problems when using ICF to identify and describe problems in children’s natural settings. The collaborative problem-solving model can guide healthcare, habilitation and school services when identifying and acting on typical and atypical problem patterns experienced by these children.

Users' perspective on rehabilitation interventions for young adult cancer survivors: A group concept mapping study.

We aim to identify and prioritise rehabilitation interventions to strengthen participation in everyday life for young adult cancer survivors (YACS) between 18 and 39 years, involving the perspectives of YACS and relevant stakeholders. A group concept mapping study was conducted in Denmark from 2019 to 2020. Online, participants generated and sorted ideas followed by rating their importance. Multidimensional scaling followed by hierarchical cluster analyses were applied to generate a cluster rating map of the prioritised interventions, which participants validated at a face-to-face meeting. Finally, a concluding conceptual model of prioritised rehabilitation intervention for YACS was developed. The study involved 25 YACS, three family members and 31 professionals working with YACS. The conceptual model included 149 ideas classified into eight intervention components created by the participants: (1) Treatment and possibilities within the social and healthcare system, (2) Rights and Finance, (3) Education and Work, (4) Psychological problems, (5) Body and Everyday Life, (6) Peer-to-peer, (7) Sexuality and Relationships and (8) Family and Friends. All components were rated equally important, whereby 17 ideas across the eight components were rated very important. This study indicates that rehabilitation of YACS should be composed of eight equally important intervention components requiring an interdisciplinary approach.

Cambridge UP, 2019. xii + 261 pp. Threshold Modernism integrates several distinctive approaches to literary and cultural analysis in engaging, insightful ways. Elizabeth F. Evans charts the emergence of (primarily) middle-class women, actual and fictional, into turn-of-the-century London's public sphere, with particular attention to their work in shops, their presence on streets, and their participation in clubs. She argues as well that the new visibility of such women gave "perceived outsiders . . . a method for articulating their own belonging in the imperial city" (6), a point most closely borne out in her final chapter on the reverse imperial ethnographies undertaken by colonial men of color. And because it [End Page 574] takes its initial bearings from late-Victorian developments, the study extends modernism's temporal and spatial dimensions in provocative fashion, establishing the centrality of women's increasingly palpable participation in the London scene between 1880 and 1940 to "the material and ideological transformations of the age" (7). If the "public woman" (6) had long been shorthand for the prostitute, while "the new woman" (22) could be alternately construed as sexless or oversexed, then the term "new public woman" (6) foregrounds "the notably public presence of women nonetheless claiming respectability" (15), some of whom were "simultaneously the object of the gaze and its knowing conductor" (28). The first chapter, which closely analyzes visual and verbal representations of the barmaid, develops a genealogy that links this type (and several others) through their participation in everyday life—as walkers, workers, or activists—and not just as objects of display. To register the dual status of the "new public woman" (6) as both spectacle and spectator, Evans coins the term "spectacality" (27), of which Édouard Manet's Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère (1882) forms an apt example. While the barmaid may be figured as a type, for example, she potentially leverages her visibility for her own ends, suggesting that even such types contain the seeds of a subjectivity forged in the interplay between looking and being looked at. The second chapter considers three very different fictions of the shopgirl. In her discussion of Millicent Henning from Henry James's The Princess Casamassima (1886), Evans claims that this "strikingly underanalyzed character" (43) is much more "integral to the novel's main plot" (45) than most critics have noted. Millicent exemplifies James's own fascination with "spectacality" (27) in her "occupation of public rather than private spaces" (53), and Evans makes the important point that readers have no access to either Millicent's rooms or her consciousness. The agency she derives from her liminal status—not a "public woman" (6), in the sexual sense, but not a lady either—contrasts sharply with that of other shopgirl characters Evans considers. With their father's death issuing in the loss of financial and social status, the Lorimer sisters of Amy Levy's The Romance of a Shop (1888) start up a photography business, while only the youngest, most marriageable of the four orphaned Madden sisters in George Gissing's The Odd Women (1893) becomes a shopgirl. Thus, the concerns these fictions develop—about how to manage an enterprise or conduct a courtship—derive in good part from the declining class fortunes of respectable ladies. While being on display incurs sexual risk for characters in each text, Evans also emphasizes [End Page 575] these female figures' access to the broader terrain of London life: as in her discussion of The Princess Casamassima, the inclusion of maps that locate characters' homes around the metropolis as well as their sites of work, meeting spots, and public transport conveys the scope and limits within which these new public women operate. A subtle shift in the maps of the third chapter, from marking physical locations to tracking character movements around the city, implies the simultaneous shift in attention from late-Victorian to modernist writers.
