Information disclosure and public participation in environmental management: Evidence from the river chief system in China

This paper evaluates the River Chief System (RCS), an institutional innovation in river governance. The RCS mandates government disclosure of administrative responsibilities and invites public supervision. Our model expands the traditional public goods theory to a discrete choice application, highlighting the mechanism of RCS that can potentially lead to outcomes closer to the social optimal. Using resident questionnaires from Shanghai, our empirical analyses confirm improved water quality under the RCS. Moreover, we find that information disclosure increases residents' willingness and active involvement in river management, which implies a critical mechanism that may help maintain the long-term effectiveness of environmental policies.

Place of Women in Environmental Management and Sustainability in Nigeria

In this essay, we contend that the relationship between human society and physical environment is not gender neutral, as men and women are treated inequitably. There exists an inequitable binary structure between the two polar values, as human society often exploits and degrades the environment, and women are undermined in various occasions. The role of women is undermined in environmental management and monitoring. Our strategy in dealing with this issue of negligence would be to expose the misconception that women have little or nothing to contribute in environmental management beside biological reproductive roles, and activities such as cooking, washing, fetching firewood and nursing of children. We will also show the negative impacts of these forcefully assigned female duties on the climate, and how this leads to pollution, which in turn, obstructs the biospheres (plant and animal species). Using the principle of complementarity, the paper insists on the need to eradicate all socio-culturally perceived superlative attributes of distinction between human society and environment or masculinity and femininity. The paper calls for mainstreaming of gender perspective, expansion of women’s opportunities and participation in environmental management, at all levels, for environmental sustainability.

Developing a Green School Training Manual for High School Students Pracharat Wittaya Serm School

This research aimed to develop a green school training manual for high school students in Pracharat Wittaya Serm School with an efficiency index at a rate of 80/80. The scores of knowledge, attitudes, and participation of the research participants gauged before and after the training were compared. The simple random sampling method was used to recruit a group of 54 student samples from Pracharat Wittayaserm School in the first semester of the academic year 2021. The research instruments consisted of The Green School Training Manual, The Knowledge Testing Form, The Attitude Testing Form, and The Participation Testing Form. The statistics used in the data analysis were frequency, Percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test. It was found that the efficiency of the training manual was 80.45/82.60, and the efficiency Index (E.I.) was 0.5840. These statistics indicate that the students had a 58.40 percent of knowledge progression. It was also observed that the average post-test scores of knowledge, skills, and environmental management participation were higher than the pre-tests scores with the significance at the level of 0.05.

Community Participation in Indonesia in Preservation and Continuation of Environmental Protection and Management

The concept of sustainable development, as discussed at the United Nations Conference on the Environment in Stockholm in 1972, focuses on development that considers environmental impacts. It highlights the constitutional mandate in Article 28H of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, emphasizing the right of every Indonesian citizen to a good and healthy living environment. Despite this constitutional provision, implementing sustainable development has faced challenges and confusion at the policy and regulatory levels. In Indonesia, where forest and land fires are recurrent disasters with severe ecological, economic, and social consequences, the aims underscore the significance of environmental awareness and proactive measures in addressing these issues. It emphasizes the interdependence between human actions and the environment and calls for responsible environmental stewardship. The research method used is legal research, which departs from statutory provisions, namely research on the legal principles of environmental provisions, specifically regarding community participation in environmental management. Overall, this provides insights into the critical role of environmental awareness and sustainable development in ensuring a better future for Indonesia's environment and its citizens, in alignment with constitutional mandates and international principles.

Community Participation in the Environmental Management of used Battery Smelting Activities in the District of Ciampea Bogor According to Law Number 32 of 2009 Concerning Environmental Protection and Management

Article 70 of Law Number 32 Year 2009 provides concrete directions, instructions and forms of community participation in environmental protection and management. The participation includes forms of efforts that can be done by the community so that they can participate in protecting and managing their environment. The manifestation of such participation can be in the form of social supervision, giving advice, opinions, proposals, objections, complaints, submitting information and reports. The manifestation of community participation in the Cinangka village is related to the smelting of used batteries which has the effect of environmental pollution which greatly disrupts the life of the Cinangka village community in various ways as directed in Article 70 of Law Number 32 Year 2009. The form of participation was carried out with the submission of complaints to the Village Government to the Bogor Regency Environmental Agency, demonstrations, deliberations with business actors for the use of smelting used batteries, conducting legal proceedings against business actors, and participating in the success of the Eco-Friendly Village program. Because the legal awareness of the community is still low which is influenced by low educational factors, so not all people participate in participating in environmental management.

PARTISIPASI ELEMEN MASYARAKAT FILM TERHADAP PERSOALAN LINGKUNGAN HIDUP

Environmental issues are very complex things that require the participation of various elements of society. The film community is one element of society that is expected to contribute to participation in environmental management. The film produced by the community is one of the cultural artifacts, environmental communication is also inseparable from culture as its context. Film is also a participatory media that is used for the important role of community participation in creating special appropriate media content. With a qualitative descriptive method, this study aims to determine the strategy of the film community in conveying environmental messages. The results showed that the two selected communities had an equally important concern for environmental sustainability. Both use social media for communication coverage through films by choosing advocating narratives to provide a space for dialogue between the general public and interested parties, in this case the government and contributors to environmental problems.

CHALLENGES OF SOLID WASTE SEGREGATION AT UNKI PLATINUM MINE IN SHURUGWI, ZIMBABWE

Waste segregation at the source, which is a pre-requisite aspect in waste management challenges, is a concept that mining sectors in Zimbabwe are yet to completely appreciate and put into practice on a broader scale. The accumulation of solid waste has become a global challenge in various mining industries. Despite the efforts of Unki Platinum Mine in environmental management participation in solid waste segregation at Unki Platinum Mine is still limited. Since the organization needs to accomplish its aim of zero waste to landfills by 2030, it is critical to encourage source separation practices among its personnel. There is a need to recognize the issues at a general employee level in order to propose appropriate suggestions for enhancing solid waste segregation at the source. The goal of this study was to look into the issues of solid waste segregation at the source at the Unki Platinum Mine in Shurugwi. Several departments at the mine that create significant solid wastes were chosen to participate in this investigation. Within the Mining, Concentrator, Human Resources, Mineral Resources Management, Engineering, and Environmental, Health and Safety and Quality (SHEQ) departments, questionnaire sets were distributed to the targeted audience. This research included a variety of data collection methods, including questionnaires, observations, and guided interviews. The problems with solid waste segregation at the source have been highlighted. These include a lack of adequate awareness and enough receptacles, especially in underground working locations, and failure to recognize substantial waste in sections, as well as behavioral tendencies and indifference on the part of most employees toward solid waste segregation systems. More recyclable waste is being dumped into landfill as a result of poor solid waste segregation at the source. The study findings revealed that inadequate receptacles, trash collection equipment, and a lack of effective instruction to staff are likely infrastructure hurdles to correct solid waste segregation at the source. Solid waste segregation at the source can be achieved by providing adequate receptacles, motivating personnel with incentives, and implementing appropriate instructions, awareness and initiatives.<p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0952/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Farmer perspectives on collaboration: Evidence from agricultural landscapes in Arizona, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania

We examine how contextual factors affect farmer perspectives on collaborative environmental management in Arizona, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania, U.S., through a qualitative and comparative study. In doing so, we explore how contextual factors identified in foundational collaborative environmental governance research play out specifically in three agricultural cases. Findings from this study reveal four key cross-case themes from farmer perspectives on collaboration: (1) prior participation, (2) flexible agenda, (3) willingness to learn, and (4) agency influence. Further, we find positions that are more open or closed on each theme are shaped by three contextual factors: farmer interdependence with non-farmers, the nature of salient water resource issues, and protection from versus vulnerability to regulatory agencies. These findings are useful for guiding future collaborative forums aiming to elicit farmer participation in environmental management.

New extractivism, foreign investment and inclusive development: reclaiming participatory gender equality in Perú

ABSTRACT The paper evaluates the effectiveness of citizen participation in environmental management, specifically, in relation to the process of evaluation of environmental impact assessment studies of large-scale mining projects in Peru. It is analysed if these mechanisms are equally inclusive of female and male voices; identifies the barriers that women face in these deliberative spaces and assess what the government is doing to reduce gender based exclusions. The paper argues that, although according to Peruvian environmental and mining law, participatory spaces are aimed to include citizens’ voices; they end up reinforcing domination and control as they mainly operate to facilitate a rapid expedition of environmental licenses in mining projects rather than truly foster spaces of dialogue, consensus and political inclusion. For the most part, such mechanisms have also been blind to the gendered impacts of extractivism.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of land-use changes in Yenagoa city

The study aimed to assess the dynamics of land use changes in the urban environment of Yenagoa City, Nigeria as to understand the changes, consequences and ameliorate the changes. Objectives of the study are to determine land use changes that are evident in the study between 1996 to 2020; identify and assess the causes and dynamics of the land use changes that are evident in the study area; ddetermine the consequences of land use changes in the urban environment of the study area; and provide physical planning measures to monitor, control and manage land use changes in Yenagoa City to promote the sustainable urban environment. The study employed a Mixed Methods Research approach of concurrent triangulation and longitudinal research designs for the collection and analyses of data in the study. The study also employed remote sensing technique, Geographic Information Systems, and time series analysis techniques to collect and analyse data for the study. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were employed for the collection of data. A total of 9 communities were chosen and sampled and 396 respondents (households) were determined and interviewed as sample size using the Taro Yamane formula. Key informants from government agencies and professionals were interviewed using their responses as themes and concepts for content analysis. The study revealed that there are significant land-use changes such as water bodies, vegetation, and built-up areas between 1996-2020. The study also identified population increases and the demand for land for urban development. The study also identified the dynamics that have caused these changes including an increase in the household size, nearness to the workplace, improve security, cheap rent, increase in migrants, employment opportunities and lack of implementation of the development plan. The consequences identified by the study include constant changes in water bodies, vegetation and built-up areas, the prevalence of flooding, encroachment to marginal lands, slum and squatter development, constant pollution, and modification of the social environment. The study recommends that; to achieve a sustainable urban development including the Yenagoa Master Plan of 2004 should be reviewed and implemented guide, control and manage urban land-use changes, the establishment of an urban land-use framework that will foster synergy of all physical planning agencies and institutions, planning and re-planning of new neighbourhoods and existing communities, continuous urban studies of land-use and environment management and encourage citizen education and participation in environmental management in the city.

Promoting the Participation of Indigenous Peoples in Environmental Impact Assessment: Effectiveness of Akwé: Kon Guidelines in Finland

Indigenous peoples’ participation in public policy and planning is ascribed in numerous international and national legal instruments as essential to the realisation of their self-determination. This study examines how the Akwé: Kon guidelines (AK) can promote effective indigenous peoples participation in environmental management, especially during environmental impact assessment (EIA). Special focus is drawn on the Finnish context, home of the Sámi indigenous people. The study applies an effectiveness review package by Lee and Colley (1999), supplemented by interview and questionnaire surveys, to analyse how effective the AK have been. It was found that although they were useful in promoting further interaction of the Sámi with authorities, the AK did not address their most fundamental political and legal grievances. This leaves room for EIA policy and practice, in Finland and all other jurisdictions with indigenous peoples, to consider how they can more effectively harness the potentialities in AK.

Attitudes of Young People Towards Lakes as a Premise for Their Public Participation in Environmental Management

Lake protection is a very important element of environmental management. This is especially true of lake districts, where the lakes are an important resting place for residents, especially young people. The crucial is the question whether young people who participate in lake management in the future, are ready for it. It was assumed that their attitude towards lakes would be an indicator of such preparation. This study aimed to define a set of respondents’ features that may condition the specific model of participation. Based on the research conducted among young residents (N = 167) of the Szczecinecki District in Poland, it was found that their pro-environmental attitudes were dominated by high values of the traits that make up the emotional component, average values of the cognitive component and the lowest values of activity. The lower the score of the overall attitude, the more often the respondents chose Recreational Lakes, rather than General Development or Natural Lakes. The most important feature that may determine the level of participation in the future is readiness to act. A comprehensive attitude index was created, which shows that it is worth examining the characteristics of respondents that correlate with the willingness to act, i.e., knowledge, logical thinking, creativity and belief in the effectiveness of actions taken and attachment to the place of residence, when planning participatory management in lakeland areas.

Investigating the factors underlying participation by the Chinese public in environmental management: an approach based on spatial heterogeneity.

Public participation in environmental management (PPEM) in China has become increasingly prominent; thus, investigating the factors that underlie participation by the Chinese public in environmental management is important. To this end, we adopted unique data for PPEM, which was measured based on environmental complaints logged by the telephone hotline set up by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China. We observed that PPEM greatly varied from one city to another, indicating significant spatial heterogeneity. In addition, complaints were mainly concentrated in four large regions, namely, the North China Plain, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration. Next, a newly developed spatial heterogeneity analysis method, namely, geographical detector, was applied to investigate the driving factors of PPEM. From the factor detector analysis results, we confirmed that the economic level, energy consumption, urban population, college-educated population, wastewater, environmental risk, SO2 emissions, and PM2.5 concentrations were the dominant factors that caused citizens to voice environmental complaints. In addition, we noticed that moderately developed cities were the leading risk areas, which indicated that these cities had serious environmental pollution problems and their citizens actively voiced complaints. As economies continue to grow, the populations in these cities are projected to become more aware of environmental quality and will implement stricter regulations to protect the environment and lower complaints. Moreover, the interaction detector analysis results revealed that the interaction of urban and college-educated populations with other factors played more important roles in affecting PPEM.

Persepsi Publik Terhadap Pengelolaan Lingkungan Hidup di Wilayah Jayapura–Papua

Papua has a huge diversity of natural resources which can be categorized as well managed compare to other areas in Indonesia. The city of Jayapura and its surrounding are arranged to become an urban area nowadays. As an impact, many sector has changing including its land use. This research aims to understanding the knowledge, perception, and assesment of people regarding the environment particularly in Jayapura and its environs. The research was conducted in Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency and Keerom Regency with sampling method using survey, questionnaire and documentation. This research revealed that 53.0–90.0% of respondent knowing about environmental management and most of them (90.0%) gained those information from educational institution such as schools. Regarding government participation in environmental management, respondent answered that it is around 69.0–76.0% while for infrastructure and monitoring it is around 52.4-74.0% and 41.0-70.6% respectively. Concerning the environmental condition and its management the rate was 6.20 which can be categoized as good.Key words: people perception; environment; government; Jayapura.Â

Analysis Of Knowledge And Attitude Fisherman In Environmental Management Participation in Coastal Area Of Palopo City

Environmental condition of the coastal area of Palopo City has long been damaged due to the behavior of the fishermen. The form environmental damage along the coastline of mangrove forests is extinct, slums and squalid neighborhoods due to organic, inorganic waste, and puddles of household sanitation waste. The Overcoming of problems measures the level of knowledge, attitudes, and participation of fishermen in managing their environment. Research purposes this is gain The description of the level of environmental knowledge together with attitudes towards the environment will affect the participation of fishermen in managing their environment so that it is suitable for occupation. This research was conducted of Penggoli Village and the Batupasi Village, Palopo City, with the number of research subjects as 75 people. Data were collected using test instruments knowledge, The questionnaire measures attitudes and participation. Data analysis uses regression analysis the basis for decision making regarding environmental knowledge and attitudes the environment, together have an effect on participation in environmental management, namely the addition of the knowledge score affects the participation score of 0.907 and the addition of the attitude score affects the participation score of 0.388.

The effect of motivation for public participation in environmental management

The increase of population in Indonesia resulted in population density becomes larger. It is one of the factors in the emergence of slum settlements, especially in urban areas. The existence of slums is related to poor environmental sanitation facilities. Environmental sanitation is one of the environmental managements. Environmental management efforts can be successful if the community is willing to participate. However, until now, the level of community participation, especially those living in slum areas, is still relatively low. One of the reasons is the lack of motivation in the community to carry out environmental management. Therefore, it is essential to know the factors that cause community motivation still at low level. This study aims to verify if motivation has impact to community participation in environmental management. The method is with literature study from articles that relevant to the topic. It results that motivation is an encouragement that supports participation. The dominant motivational factor is internal factors. In addition, the factors of knowledge, social, and economic are also influence the level of motivation.

Partisipasi Masyarakat dalam Pengelolaan Lingkungan Ekowisata di Mangrove Center Kabupaten Tuban

Mangrove Center Tuban (MCT) Jenu is a conservation area of mangrove forests in Tuban District, it is located on the north coast with a width of about 56 ha. This MCT area has been developed into an ecotourism area with the object of mangrove forests and sea firs. The sustainability of MCT as an Ecotourism area depends on the role of the community and its participation in the management of the ecotourism. As the purpose of this research is: 1) to describe the community perception of environmental management in the MCT Jenu eco-tourism area; 2) to describe community participation in environmental management in the MCT Jenu eco-tourism area, and 3) to find out the affecting factors of community participation in environmental management in the MCT Jenu Tuban ecotourism area. This study was conducted from November 2019 to January 2020. The number of respondents were 20 people whose presence of Wana Bahari group; Wana Asri group, and the visitors of them. Data collection was done with field observation, dissemination, and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively quantitatively. The result showed that the level of community perception about the management of ecotourism in the MCT area and the level of community participation in the management of ecotourism in the MCT area was in a good category. While affecting factors of public participation in ecotourism management derived from the economic activity and the role of the MCT Foundation in the management of the MCT area. Research results are expected to benefit for: 1) raising public awareness of the importance of maintaining the mangrove forest conservation area through their participation in environmental management in the MCT eco-tourism area; 2 strengthening cooperation between communities, and MCT managers for the continuity of the MCT area who have a function for the conservation of mangrove forests.

Examining the Institutional and Organizational Antecedents to Organizational Participation in Environmental Management

Research into the institutional antecedents of organizational engagement in environmental management (EM) has revealed that organizations respond heterogeneously to homogenous institutional pressures. In this article, we employ complementary institutional and entrepreneurial perspectives to build upon research that examines how organizational characteristics may influence the institutional pressure to EM relationship. Specifically, we examine the moderating effect of an organizational entrepreneurial orientation (EO) upon the organizational visibility to EM relationship. Results from a sample of 252 public firms over a 10-year period confirm that organizational visibility significantly increases the rate of organizational participation in EM. Additionally, support is found for a positive aggregate EO moderation effect and significant accelerating moderating effects of three EO dimensions: autonomy, competitive aggressiveness, and innovativeness.

Different Worldviews as Impediments to Integrated Nature and Cultural Heritage Conservation Management: Experiences from Protected Areas in Northern Sweden

In the management of protected nature areas, arguments are being raised for increasingly integrated approaches. Despite an explicit ambition from the responsible managing governmental agencies, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Swedish National Heritage Board, attempts to initiate and increase the degree of integrated nature and cultural heritage conservation management in the Swedish mountains are failing. The delivery of environmental policy through the Swedish National Environmental Objective called Magnificent Mountains is dependent on increased collaboration between the state and local stakeholders. This study, using a group model building approach, maps out the system’s dynamic interactions between nature perceptions, values and the objectives of managing agencies and local stakeholders. It is identified that the dominance of a wilderness discourse influences both the objectives and management of the protected areas. This wilderness discourse functions as a barrier against including cultural heritage conservation aspects and local stakeholders in management, as wilderness-influenced objectives are defining protected areas as environments “untouched” by humans. A wilderness objective reduces the need for local knowledge and participation in environmental management. In reality, protected areas depend, to varying degrees, on the continuation of traditional land-use practices.
