Similarity and distinctions of <sup>58, 60</sup>Ni photodisintegration processes

Reliability of (γ, 1n) and (γ, 2n) reactions cross sections for 58, 60Ni obtained in experiments carried out on the beams of bremsstrahlung and quasimonoenergetic annihilation photons was investigated using objective physical criteria. It was found that data of the first type experiment do not satisfy those criteria and definitely are not reliable. At the same time there are serious doubts in reliability of the data obtained in the second type experiment. New partial photoneutron reaction cross sections on 58, 60Ni satisfying physical criteria of data reliability were used for analysis of characteristics of both isotope photodisintegration processes. It was obtained that for neighboring (differ in two neutrons) isotopes because of various type systematic uncertainties there are significant disagreements between evaluated and experimental cross sections of various reactions which for isotopes 58Ni and 60Ni are of significant different character. It was shown that the reasons are not only the differences in energy thresholds and absolute values of cross sections of the (γ, 1n), (γ, 1n1p) and (γ, 2n) reactions on 58Ni and 60Ni but significant differences in specific features of neighboring isotopes shell structure also.

Partial photoneutron reaction cross sections in experiments with bremsstrahlung

The analysis of reliability of experimental partial photoneutron reaction cross sections of the reactions (γ, 1n) and (γ, 2n) obtained in experiments on the beams of bremsstrahlung was carried our using the objective physical criteria. In this type of experiments partial reaction cross sections were obtained using the procedure of neutron yield cross section σ(γ, xn) corrections calculated on the base of statistical theory. It was found out that in the cases of 59Co, 58,60Ni, 112, 114, 119Sn reaction cross sections obtained using that procedure do not satisfy the physical criteria of data reliability and therefore are not reliable. At the same time in the cases of 127I, 165Ho и 181Ta one has not any doubts in the data obtained reliability.

New Data on Photoneutron Reaction Cross Sections for 76,78,80,82Se Nuclei

The problem of reliability of the cross section data obtained for partial photoneutron reactions on 76,78,80,82Se nuclei in beams of quasimonoenergetic annihilation photons by means of neutron multiplicity sorting is discussed by employing objective physical criteria. It is shown that, because of substantial systematic uncertainties, experimental data on the (γ, 1n) and (γ, 2n) cross sections are unreliable. New data satisfying the reliability criteria are obtained for the partial photoneutron reaction cross sections for 76,78,82Se nuclei by an experimental—theoretical method for evaluating such cross sections and are compared with experimental data and with data evaluated earlier for the isotope 80Se. The evaluated integrated cross sections for the total photoneutron reactions on 76,78,80,82Se nuclei are compared with the predictions of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn classical dipole sum rule.

The reliability of photoneutron cross sections for 90,91,92,94Zr

Data on partial photoneutron reaction cross sections $(\gamma,1n)$ and $(\gamma,2n)$ for 90,91,92,94Zr obtained at Livermore (USA) and for 90Zr obtained at Saclay (France) were analyzed. Experimental data were obtained using quasimonoenergetic photon beams from the annihilation in flight of relativistic positrons. The method of photoneutron multiplicity sorting based on the neutron energy measuring was used to separate partial reactions. The research carried out is based on the objective of using the physical criteria of data reliability. The large systematic uncertainties were found in partial cross sections, since they do not satisfy those criteria. To obtain the reliable cross sections of the partial $(\gamma,1n)$ and $(\gamma,2n)$ and total $(\gamma,1n)$ + $(\gamma,2n)$ reactions on 90,91,92,94Zr and $(\gamma,3n)$ reaction on 94Zr, the experimental-theoretical method was used. It is based on the experimental data for neutron yield cross section rather independent from the neutron multiplicity and theoretical equations of the combined photonucleon reaction model (CPNRM). Newly evaluated data are compared with experimental ones. The reasons of noticeable disagreements between those are discussed.

Photoneutron cross sections for 59Co : Systematic uncertainties of data from various experiments

Data on partial photoneutron reaction cross sections $(\gamma ,1n)$ , $(\gamma ,2n)$ , and $(\gamma ,3n)$ for 59Co obtained in two experiments carried out at Livermore (USA) were analyzed. The sources of radiation in both experiments were the monoenergetic photon beams from the annihilation in flight of relativistic positrons. The total yield was sorted by the neutron multiplicity, taking into account the difference in the neutron energy spectra for different multiplicity. The two quoted studies differ in the method of determining the neutron. Significant systematic disagreements between the results of the two experiments exist. They are considered to be caused by large systematic uncertainties in partial cross sections, since they do not satisfy physical criteria for reliability of the data. To obtain reliable cross sections of partial and total photoneutron reactions a new method combining experimental data and theoretical evaluation was used. It is based on the experimental neutron yield cross section which is rather independent of neutron multiplicity and the transitional neutron multiplicity functions of the combined photonucleon reaction model (CPNRM). The model transitional multiplicity functions were used for the decomposition of the neutron yield cross section into the contributions of partial reactions. The results of the new evaluation noticeably differ from the partial cross sections obtained in the two experimental studies are under discussion.

Photoneutron reactions in the range of giant dipole resonance

The well-known significant systematic disagreements between data on partial photoneutron reaction cross sections obtained in experiments using quasimonoenergetic annihilation photons and bremsstrahlung were investigated using objective physical criteria of data reliability. It was shown that many data are not reliable because of significant systematic uncertainties of the photoneutron multiplicity sorting methods used. The experimental–theoretical method for evaluation of reliable partial reaction cross sections was proposed and many new data were obtained.

Multinucleon photonuclear reactions on 209Bi: Experiment and evaluation

Photon activation technique using bremsstrahlug with end-point energy 55.6 MeV is used to induce photonuclear reactions in a 209Bi target. Absolute yields and integrated cross sections of multiparticle reactions (γ, 2n-6n), (γ, 4n1p), and (γ, 5n1p) are obtained. The results are compared to predictions of statistical models using systematical and microscopic description of photoabsorption and to the result of evaluation of the partial photoneutron reaction cross sections. Based on a comparison with existing experimental photoneutron cross sections and model calculations, we make a conclusion that neutron multiplicity assignment in available photoneutron cross sections on 209Bi can be corrected and evaluated cross sections of (γ, 1n) and (γ, 2n) are obtained that are in an agreement with the obtained experimental results.

A new approach for analysis and evaluation of partial photoneutron reaction cross sections

There are well-known systematic disagreements in partial photoneutron reaction cross sections obtained using quasimonoenergetic annihilation photons in experiments based on neutron multiplicity sorting methods. Using newly proposed criteria we demonstrate that a large part of the systematic uncertainty comes from certain shortcomings of experimental methods of neutron multiplicity sorting. To develop methods of correction of data obtained in experiments a new approach to data evaluation was developed in which a combined model of photonuclear reactions is used to decompose experimental total neutron yield reaction cross sections into partial reaction contributions. Evaluated cross sections of partial photoneutron reactions obtained using this method show a good agreement with results of alternative experiments.

Evaluated cross sections of the σ(γ, nX) and σ(γ, 2nX) reactions on 112, 114, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, 122, 124Sn isotopes

A combined analysis of experimental data on total and partial photoneutron reaction cross sections, obtained using bremsstrahlung γ-radiation and quasi-monoenergetic annihilation photon beams, was performed for nine Sn isotopes. The partial reactions σeval(γ, nX) and σeval(γ, 2nX) cross sections were evaluated using an approach free of the shortcomings of experimental neutron multiplicity sorting methods. This approach involves calculations within the photonuclear reaction model, based on Fermi gas densities and considering the effects of nucleus deformation, the isospin splitting of its giant dipole resonance (GDR), and experimental data on the total photoneutron cross sections σexp(γ, xn) = σexp(γ, nX) + 2σexp(γ, 2nX) = σexp(γ, n) + σexp(γ, np) + … + 2σexp(γ, 2n) + 2σexp(γ, 2np) + …. The evaluated σeval(γ, nX) and σeval(γ, 2nX) reactions cross sections were obtained using the introduced transition multiplicity functions Ftheor = σtheor(γ, 2nX)/σtheor(γ, xn) = σtheor(γ, 2nX)/[σtheor(γ, nX) + 2σtheor(γ, 2nX) + …]; and σeval.(γ, 2nX) = Ftheor.σexp.(γ, xn) = σeval(γ, nX) = (1 − 2Ftheor)σexp(γ, xn). The evaluated partial reaction cross sections were used to assess the total photoneutron reaction cross sections σeval(γ, sn) = σeval(γ, nX) + σeval(γ, 2nX) + … as functions of the mass number A. The GDR features of 112, 114, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, 122, 124Sn isotopes were studied and are discussed here.
