Microstructural and Residual Properties of Self-Compacting Concrete Containing Waste Copper Slag as Fine Aggregate Exposed to Ambient and Elevated Temperatures

In recent times, with rapid development in the construction sector, the use of enormous amounts of materials is required for the production of concrete. Fire penetrates concrete, leading to chemical contamination, small cracks, and lightening. These effects can significantly change the properties of concrete’s structure, reduce its strength and durability, and also change the behavior of the structure and lead to effects on the environment. An attempt was made to study the effects of elevated temperature on the mechanical characteristics of self-compacting concrete (SCC) with by-products including fly ash as a partial replacement for cement and waste copper slag as a partial replacement for fine aggregate at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%. The SCC specimens were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C, respectively, for a steady-state of two hours in a digital muffle furnace. The residual compressive strength, mass loss, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and residual density along with a visual inspection of cracks and color changes were observed. In this study, with over 400 °C temperatures, surface fractures appeared. The residual compressive strength (R-CMS) of all the individual temperatures of the SCC-WCS% mixes exhibited a gain in strength range from 31 to 34 MPa at 400 °C, 26 to 35 MPa at 600 °C, and 22.5 MPa to 33.5 MPa at 800 °C, respectively. Microstructural analysis of SCC-WCS% mixtures subjected to elevated ambient temperatures is carried out with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Effects of carbonation curing on chemical attack in cement paste incorporating liquid-crystal display glass powder as a partial binder replacement

This study investigates the chemical resistance of cement paste by incorporating liquid-crystal display (LCD) glass powder as a partial replacement for cement. The samples, cured under water and carbonation, were subjected to adverse chemical attacks over a period of up to 90 days, using MgSO4 and H2SO4 for the sulphate attack and acid attack, respectively. The results demonstrate a decrease in compressive strength by upto 14.63% and 32.32% for water- and carbonation-cured samples, respectively, and an increase in carbonation degree by upto 100% with the incorporation of glass powder at 28 days. Under sulphate attack, water curing and carbonation curing displayed strength increase of 21.24–36.13% and 7.56–8.06%, respectively, at 90 days. However, carbonation-cured samples experienced greater leaching of silica and calcium. The compressive strength decreased with acid attack duration, with glass powder incorporation mitigating strength loss in carbonation-cured samples. At 30 days, with an incorporation rate of 30% glass powder, the strength loss was reduced by 37.66% for the carbonation-cured samples. The enhanced resistance with incorporation of glass powder was also evident from mercury intrusion porosimetry results that indicated decreased intrusion levels. Visual inspection revealed a different consistency of white substance deposition, suggesting resistance mechanisms differed between curing methods.

Efficiency of self-compacting concrete made with variable sustainable cementitious materials: A TOPSIS algorithm approach

The use of supplementary cementitious materials as a partial replacement for cement is taking the lead in the concrete production industry. Being known as by-products from various manufacturing properties, concrete produced with such materials is considered a sustainable alternative to normal concrete. Three different by-product materials have been investigated in this study for the production of sustainable self-compacting concrete (SCC), namely, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF). Compressive strength, production cost, and global warming potential (GWP) were the main testing parameters for the mixes' performances. Multi-criteria decision-making algorithm was implemented using the TOPSIS model to investigate the ultimate performance of those SCC mixes considering all tested parameters simultaneously. Results showed the best SCC performance can be attained when using about 60 % of GGBS as a partial replacement for cement.

Rheological properties of high-performance SCC using recycled marble powder

Due to the impacts of cement manufacturing and depletion of the natural aggregates for concrete production, recycling of construction and demolition waste materials has become an alternative replacement to natural materials that lower their consumption and satisfy the environment. One of these alternatives is replacing cement with recycled materials from marble, ceramic, granite, and concrete wastes or even replacing the coarse aggregate with crushed marble and other stone wastes. Marble, granite, and natural stone wastes rapidly increase each year due to unmanaged waste disposal processes and the incremental increase in construction potential. Marble slurry, which comes from washing and cleaning marble surfaces, shows a filler effect by giving the concrete a denser and homogenous structure. This study evaluates the marble filler effects on the rheology in the fresh state of self-compacting concrete (SCC) through four SCC mixes by incorporating 10% marble powder (MP) and 33% fly ash (FA) as a partial ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement. Tests on paste and mortar were conducted to assess the suitability of the marble dosage on the water content and the superplasticizer amount. Spread flow and V-funnel tests were assessed. The results showed that mixes with MP required additional mixing water to ensure the same workability. Regardless of the high viscosity and air content, the overall developed marble SCC mixes reduced the cement quantity by up to 11% and provided excellent rheological properties like that of the reference mix. Besides the economic benefits, this transformation of waste to valuable materials involves environmental advantages and sustainability promotion.

This paper intends to investigate the possibility of producing low costs enhanced mortar by Granite powder. By taking the enormous amount of cement, it affects the environment badly and demand for cement was increasing day by day. So, by partially replacing Granite powder with cement in construction field. It can fulfill the objectives of catering to the needs of the construction sector while simultaneously promoting an eco-friendly and pristine atmosphere. Partial replacement of cement by using granite powder in mortar gives sufficient strength. The conventional mortar mix consists of cement, fine aggregate, and water. In this experimental study granite powder was used with different percentage, such as 20% 25%, 30% 35%. The mixture was prepared and mortar cubes were made and allowed for curing. It is concluded that, he immersion of cement mortar in magnesium sulphate is better when compared to sodium sulphate and the sulphate attack is lesser in magnesium sulphate. The residual compression strength for the cement mortar in the proportion of granite content 30% is higher.

An Experimental Study on Self Compacting Concrete with Partial Replacement of Cement by Silica Fume and Crumb Rubber

Abstract: Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a type of concrete that can flow and consolidate under its own weight without the need for vibration. SCC has many advantages such as improved workability, durability, surface quality, and reduced noise and labour. However, SCC also requires a high amount of cement and fine materials, which increases the cost and environmental impact of concrete production. Therefore, the use of supplementary cementitious materials such as silica fume and crumb rubber is beneficial to reduce the cement content and enhance the properties of SCC. This study aims to explore the effects of mixing silica fume and crumb rubber on the fresh and hardened properties of SCC. This involves the preparation of various concrete mixes with different percentages of cement replaced by silica fume and crumb rubber. Through a series of experiments, we evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of the SCC mixes, fresh properties such as workability, passing ability, and filling ability, while hardened properties including compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength. The result obtained from these tests are compared with conventional concrete of M30 grade od concrete specimens. Hence the use of silica fume and crumb rubber leads to reduction in cement quantity for construction purpose and its use should be promoted for better performance as well as environmental sustainability.

Effectiveness of Rice (Oryza sativa) Hull Ash (RHA) as Partial Replacement of Cement in Concrete Exposed in Coastal Conditions

Cement use and production are among the largest contributors to greenhouse gases. Thus, we endeavor to utilize agricultural wastes to reduce the consumption of cement while improving the properties of the concrete. This study aimed to determine the effect of rice hull ash (RHA), as partial cement replacement, on concrete's workability, permeability, and compressive strength. Also, it aimed to compare the changes in compressive strength before and after exposure to coastal conditions and perform a cost analysis of concrete mixtures. This experiment used three different RHA loadings (5%, 10%, 15%) as partial replacement to cement. This study concludes that replacing cement with RHA resulted in low workability and lower chloride penetration. Also, replacing cement of up to 10% RHA has comparable compressive strength with pure concrete before exposure to coastal conditions. Replacing up to 15% of RHA has comparable compressive strength with pure concrete after exposure to coastal conditions. Using RHA replacement has a lower production cost than pure concrete.

Abstract: An investigation is carried out on red-mud based cement mortar to understand its mechanical property performance. A proportionate replacement of cement is done to the range of 0% to 20% with 5% intervals with red mud. The mortar was prepared with a proportion of 1:4 and the behavioral performance of mortar were studied as concern towards its compressive strength. The results we would expect that the mortar exhibited better performance at 0% to 20% replacement and as well as red mud mortar is denser than normal cement mortar.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE DURABILITY PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE PRODUCED WITH METAKAOLIN AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT

The research investigates the durability properties of concrete produced with metakaolin (MTK) as partial replacement of cement. Cement was partially replaced by metakaolin at 5% to 30% at an interval of 5%. Physical properties of materials were tested. A 100 x 100 x 100mm cube was used for density, compressive strength, water absorption and abrasion resistant test, while, 100mm x 200mm cylinder was used for split tensile strength, at a mix ratio of 1:2:4 with 0.5 w/c ratio, and cured at 7, 14, 28, 56 and 90 days under different curing conditions. Result shows that the density of concrete increase as the curing ages of concrete increases. The highest compressive strength of concrete at 28days was at 0% control which achieved 28.2 N/mm2 and 27.6 N/mm2, while, 10% has the highest strength of 32.1 N/mm2 and 31.1 N/mm2 at 90 days for concrete cured in H2SO4 and MgSO4 respectively. 10% MTK concrete has reduce absorption capacity of 11.34, 11.17% and 6.57% in H2O, H2SO4 and MgSO4 respectively, as compared to that of control concrete, and has improve resistance to abrasion in aggressive environment. Chemicals significantly affect the strength of concrete. MgSO4 is more deleterious to concrete than H2SO4. In conclusion, metakaolin is a suitable pozzolana for use in the production of concrete, at lower volume of replacement will enhance the reduction of cement usage in concretes, thereby reducing the production cost and environmental pollution from exploration and production of cement. 10% MTK is the optimum percentage in concrete, therefore,...

Advancing Earth-Based Construction: A Comprehensive Review of Stabilization and Reinforcement Techniques for Adobe and Compressed Earth Blocks

This comprehensive literature review investigates the impact of stabilization and reinforcement techniques on the mechanical, hygrothermal properties, and durability of adobe and compressed earth blocks (CEBs). Recent advancements in understanding these properties have spurred a burgeoning body of research, prompting a meticulous analysis of 70 journal articles and conference proceedings. The selection criteria focused on key parameters including construction method (block type), incorporation of natural fibers or powders, partial or complete cement replacement, pressing techniques, and block preparation methods (adobe or CEB). The findings unearth several significant trends. Foremost, there is a prevailing interest in utilizing waste materials, such as plant matter, construction and demolition waste, and mining by-products, to fortify or stabilize earth blocks. Additionally, the incorporation of natural fibers manifests in a discernible reduction in crack size attributable to shrinkage, accompanied by enhancements in durability, mechanical strength, and thermal resistance. Furthermore, this review illuminates a gap in complete lifecycle analyses of earthen structures, underscoring the critical necessity for further research to address this shortfall. It emphasizes the urgent need for deeper exploration of properties and sustainability indicators, recognizing the inherent potential and enduring relevance of earthen materials in fostering sustainable development. This synthesis significantly contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field and underscores the continued importance of earth-based construction methodologies in contemporary sustainable practices.

Experimental Study of Partial Replacement of Cement with GGBS and Silico Manganese with M30 Grade Concrete

Abstract: Cement in concrete is a several disadvantages when used without any replacement to it in concrete such as high carbon footprint high cost of construction, and low tensile strength. To address these materials such as GGBS, and silico manganese can be used, designing concrete mixtures with lower cement content can reduce the carbon print, cost, and potential cracking, resulting in more sustainable, cost effective and durable concrete structures. In our project we are going to use GGBS (Ground granulated blast furnace slag) and silico manganese as a replacement of materials to cement in varying percentage. GGBS and silico manganese cementitious properties and can particularly replace cement in concrete mixtures. It improves the durability, workability, and strength of concrete. GGBS has a lower carbon footprint than traditional cement, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. Silico manganese is the process involves high temperature to melt the raw materials and reduce them to their metallic forms. This project represents the results of an experimental investigations accomplish to understand the suitability of GGBS and Silico manganese on strength of referral concrete M30 Grade concrete was prepared by replacing PART OF 0%, 30%, 40%, 50% (by weight of cement) for GGBS and Silico manganese. Fresh concrete was properties viz. slump cone was carried out. Strength of concrete were determined by performing compressive strength test on (150mm×150mm×150mm) size cubes.

Sustainable reuse of waste ceramic tiles powder and waste brick powder as a replacement for cement on green high strength concrete properties

Nowadays, reducing construction waste has grabbed the attention. As bricks and ceramic tiles represent more than 50% of the ceramic waste in many European countries. Thus, the recycling of this waste type is one of the most significant challenges within the paradigm of the circular economy. This paper investigated the impact of substitution levels of cement by waste ceramic powder (WCP) and waste brick powder (WBP) at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, on the HSC characteristics. The WBP and WCP materials were characterized in detail by laser granulometry, XRF and XRD measurements, followed by standard mixing, production, and curing of concrete samples. The experiments on dry density, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, compressive strength, resistance to sulfate attack, water absorption and ultrasonic pulse velocity were conducted to evaluate the hardened properties of concrete. It was demonstrated that the durability and strength of concrete containing WBP and WCP as partial replacements for cement are marginally inferior to those of the control sample. On the other hand, samples containing WBP had a lesser negative effect on HSC properties in comparison with samples containing WCP. However, employing a 5% WBP with 10% WCP mixture enhanced the characteristics of the HSC in comparison to samples containing various percentages of WCP individually. In addition, the microstructure analyses revealed that the addition of 10% WCP and 5%WBP to HSC specimens resulted in higher hydration products and a slightly denser concrete matrix compared to samples containing various percentages of WCP individually. Research findings indicate that a 15% substitution of cement with WCP or WBP illustrated an environmental benefit in concrete production due to a 13.1% reduction in specific energy consumption.

Use of sludge from water treatment decanter in cement composites

The objective of this manuscript is to present a sustainable alternative for the use of waste from Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), specifically water treatment sludge (WCS), in civil construction. The proposal is to use water treatment sludge as a construction material, more specifically in the partial replacement of cement in self-compacting mortars (SCC). Due to the significant use of natural resources in civil construction and the consequent environmental degradation, the use of water treatment sludge (WCS) as a construction material may be an option. However, the low quality of river water and the need for drinking water force water treatment plants to use greater quantities of chemical compounds, resulting in a significant waste known as WCS. The methodology used for dosing self-compacting concrete (SCC) follows the process described by the Gomes method, which is applicable to both concrete and self-compacting mortars. In this study, the partial replacement of cement at 2.5% and 10% with water clarification mud (WCS) in self-compacting mortars (SCC) was analyzed and it was found that the compressive strength increased from 27.3% to 30% for the specimens, with the addition of 2.5% and 10% of WCS, respectively. A life cycle assessment was carried out to prove the environmental benefits of replacing cement with WCS. The results preserve the feasibility of applying WCS in civil construction while at the same time highlighting the need for additional research on the topic.

Investigating Concrete Properties with Partial Replacement of Cement by Alccofine and Eggshell Powder

In this study, we investigate the effect of substituting cement with Alccofine and eggshell powder on the strength properties of concrete. Cement production is a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions, prompting the search for sustainable alternatives. Our research aims to address this environmental concern by evaluating the potential of Alccofine and eggshell powder as partial cement replacements while maintaining or enhancing concrete quality. We prepared various concrete mixtures with a constant 10% substitution of Alccofine, combined with different proportions of eggshell powder replacing cement (ranging from 0% to 20%). Through thorough testing including compressive, split tensile and flexural strength assessments, we analyzed the mechanical performance of these mixtures. Our findings demonstrate that Alccofine and eggshell powder can effectively substitute cement in concrete, providing a more environmentally friendly option that improves material strength. However, further research is needed to optimize the mix proportions and assess long-term durability in diverse environmental conditions. Notably, combining eggshell powder with Alccofine presents a promising approach to enhancing concrete performance while reducing the environmental impact of cement production. This study contributes to advancing sustainable practices in concrete construction, promoting the use of eco-friendly building materials.
