Prediction on partial replacement of cement and coarse aggregate by zeolite powder and steel slag in high-performance concrete

High performance concrete is obtained by the inclusion of mineral admixtures like silica fume and fly ash in the concrete. The research explores the viability and performance of sustainable concrete by introducing zeolite powder as a partial substitute for cement and steel slag as a partial replacement for coarse aggregate in M-70 grade concrete. Zeolite powder, possessing pozzolanic properties, is a natural or synthetic aluminosilicate material, while steel slag is an industrial byproduct with potential as an alternative aggregate source. The main objective is to investigate the impact of zeolite powder and steel slag on the development of High-Performance Concrete (M-70) in accordance with Bureau of Indian standards. The formulation of high-performance concrete involved replacing 12.5%, 15%, and 17.5% of the cement with zeolite powder and varying the proportion of steel slag as a replacement for coarse aggregate (ranging from 30% to 55%). A comprehensive mechanical test was conducted on these specimens and compared with conventional concrete. Among the 19 mixes, the optimal combination was identified, incorporating 15% zeolite powder as a cement replacement and 45% steel slag as a coarse aggregate replacement, resulting in superior performance compared to conventional concrete. This mix was further studied for non-destructive testing, and microstructural analysis. Subsequently, the experimental results were compared with predicted outcomes using the Taguchi method. The close alignment between the values obtained experimentally and those predicted further validates the effectiveness of the optimized mix.

Modelling the mechanical properties of concrete produced with polycarbonate waste ash by machine learning

India’s cement industry is the second largest in the world, generating 6.9% of the global cement output. Polycarbonate waste ash is a major problem in India and around the globe. Approximately 370,000 tons of scientific waste are generated annually from fitness care facilities in India. Polycarbonate waste helps reduce the environmental burden associated with disposal and decreases the need for new raw materials. The primary variable in this study is the quantity of polycarbonate waste ash (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% of the weight of cement), partial replacement of cement, water-cement ratio and aggregates. The mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural test results, of the mixtures with the polycarbonate waste ash were superior at 7, 14 and 28 days compared to those of the control mix. The water absorption rate is less than that of standard concrete. Compared with those of conventional concrete, polycarbonate waste concrete mixtures undergo minimal weight loss under acid curing conditions. Polycarbonate waste is utilized in the construction industry to reduce pollution and improve the economy. This study further simulated the strength characteristics of concrete made with waste polycarbonate ash using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and decision trees. Cement, polycarbonate waste, slump, water absorption, and the ratio of water to cement were the main components that were considered input variables. The suggested decision tree model was successful with unparalleled predictive accuracy across important metrics. Its outstanding predictive ability for split tensile strength (R2 = 0.879403), flexural strength (R2 = 0.91197), and compressive strength (R2 = 0.853683) confirmed that this method was the preferred choice for these strength predictions.

An Experimental Study On Strength Characteristics Concrete by Partial Replacement of Coarse Aggregate with Bethamcherala Waste Stone

In the current research work, as per the best knowledge of the authors, for the first time Bethamcherla stones has been used as a partial replacement of coarse aggregate in concrete mix. The scarcity of natural aggregate as well as finding alternative materials that can maintain or enhance the properties of concrete is crucial for sustainable construction practices. Bethamcherla stones (BS), which mainly comprises by limestone can be a potential substitute for coarse aggregate. Limestone is a common material used in concrete production, and its use as an aggregate could offer advantages such as reducing the demand for traditional aggregates and utilizing local resources efficiently. The concrete specimens, casted using BS, were kept for curing for different durations (7, 21, and 28 days), and the mechanical property was assessed using the compressive strength test, a standard procedure for evaluating concrete performance. Compressive strength is a fundamental parameter that reflects the ability of concrete to withstand loads and pressures, making it an essential property to study. It would be interesting to see the results of this study, especially how the compressive strength of the concrete changes with different replacement levels of coarse aggregate with BS aggregates (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%). This data would provide insights into the effectiveness of using BS as a substitute and help determine the optimal replacement ratio that balances cost and performance considerations. Additionally, while compressive strength is a critical mechanical property, other properties such as flexural strength, durability, and elevated temperature effect also need to be evaluated to understand how the BS aggregates influence the overall behavior of the concrete. If this experimental study proves successful, it could pave the way for more sustainable and cost-effective construction practices in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh and other regions facing similar challenges with traditional aggregate availability. Remember that the success of this research will depend on the accuracy of testing methods, the representativeness of the specimens, and the relevance of the findings to real-world construction applications. Seeing such innovative efforts toward improving construction materials and practices for a more sustainable future is exciting.

Evaluating the Structural Performance of Concrete Beams Made of Waste Plastic Aggregates

Abstract: This study investigates the potential of using plastic waste as a partial replacement for aggregates in concrete production, aiming to address the dual challenges of unsustainable construction practices and the global accumulation of plastic waste. With an emphasis on sustainability and waste management, the research explores the effects of incorporating different percentages of plastic waste (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) on the mechanical properties, durability, workability, and thermal behavior of concrete. The methodology encompasses the collection and preparation of plastic waste, formulation of concrete mixes with varying levels of plastic waste replacement, and comprehensive testing of the prepared specimens for compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, workability (slump test), durability (freeze-thaw cycles), impact resistance, and thermal conductivity. The analysis of results reveals that while the inclusion of plastic waste in concrete leads to a reduction in mechanical strengths, it simultaneously improves workability, durability against freeze-thaw cycles, impact resistance, and thermal insulation properties

Effect of Cockle Shell as Coarse Aggregates Replacement on Mechanical Properties of Concrete

Gravel is a natural raw material used in concrete mixtures. However, more of this scarce resource was used, which reduced the amount of gravel-based coarse aggregates that could be produced. As a result, efforts to preserve natural coarse aggregates for future generations were critical. So, an innovation to replace this natural coarse aggregate was required. The dumping of cockle shell waste by the cockle trade emits a stinking smell and pollutes the environment. This study investigates the density, compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strengths of concrete containing cockle shell as a coarse aggregate substitute. Four concrete mixes were prepared by integrating diverse contents of cockle shell as 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% partial replacement of coarse aggregates by weight of gravel. Concrete becomes less dense as a large amount of cockle shell is integrated. Utilization of cockle shell up to 10% enhances the compressive strength of concrete. However, increasing the amount of cockle shell by up to 30% can improve the splitting tensile and flexural strength of concrete

Mechanical Strength, Characterization and Suitability of Cement-Plastic Concrete Admixture

A significant increment in the consumption of plastic has been monitored globally in recent years, which has led to a high amount of plastic waste. Given its benefits on both an economic and ecological level, recycling plastic waste to create new materials like concrete is considered to be one of the finest ways to get rid of plastic waste. The objective of this paper was to examine the workability, durability, and mechanical strength of concrete with partial replacement of coarse aggregates with plastic waste using standard procedure. The percentages of plastic waste used to replace coarse aggregate were 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Lastly, the mechanical characteristics of the concrete mix specimens was determined by testing them using a testometric and compressor machine. The specimens are then compared with the conventional mix. The test results demonstrated that the compressive strength exhibited a decreasing trend. For mixes ranging from 0% to 15%, the compressive strength varies from 35.66 to 17.88 N/mm2, however the flexural strength significantly decreases when 15% of the coarse aggregate is replaced with plastic waste. It can be concluded that reusing plastic waste as an aggregate during the concrete-making process reduces waste and conserves resources.

Mechanical Properties of Rubberised Geopolymer Concrete.

The environmental impact of non-biodegradable rubber waste can be severe if they are buried in moist landfill soils or remain unused forever. This study deals with a sustainable approach for reusing discarded tires in construction materials. Replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with an environmentally friendly geopolymer binder and integrating crumb rubber into pre-treated or non-treated geopolymer concrete as a partial replacement of natural aggregate is a great alternative to utilise tire waste and reduce CO2 emissions. Considering this, two sets of geopolymer concrete (GPC) mixes were manufactured, referred to as core mixes. Fine aggregates of the core geopolymer mixes were partially replaced with pre-treated and non-treated rubber crumbs to produce crumb rubber geopolymer concrete (CRGPC). The mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, stress-strain relationship, and elastic modulus of a rubberised geopolymer concrete of the reference GPC mix and the CRGPC were examined thoroughly to determine the performance of the products. Also, the mechanical properties of the CRGPC were compared with the existing material models. The result shows that the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of CRGPC decrease with the increase of rubber content; for instance, a 33% reduction of the compressive strength is observed when 25% natural fine aggregate is replaced with crumb rubber. However, the strength and elasticity reduction can be minimised using pre-treated rubber particles. Based on the experimental results, stress-strain models for GPC and CRGPC are developed and proposed. The proposed models can accurately predict the properties of GPC and CRGPC.

USE OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE TO REPLACE AGGREGATE NATURAL REINFORCED WITH STEEL FIBER

This paper aims to use and manufacture recycled aggregate from the use of RCD (construction and demolition waste) for partial replacement of natural coarse aggregate in the manufacture of concrete for structural purposes. Partial replacements were made with between 10% and 20% recycled aggregate. Six experimental groups were created, two for reference and four for comparison. Each group comprised eight (8) cylindrical specimens (dimensions of 100 mm x 200 mm) and a beam (dimensions of 150 mm x 150 mm x 600 mm). The results indicated the feasibility of replacing up to 20% of natural aggregate with recycled aggregate, according to the processing procedures outlined in this study, particularly in relation to compression properties. Furthermore, the validity of substitution of up to 10% for evaluations of tensile strength in compression was verified, showing an analogous behavior between the corresponding samples.

Performance Assessments of Plastering Mortars with Partial Replacement of Aggregates with Glass Waste

The rising concern for the environment and the need for a sustainable economic model has stimulated experimentation in the field of construction materials, notably in replacing certain components from cementitious materials with construction and demolition waste. The main objective of this study is to replace a significant proportion of natural aggregates with glass waste, in the composition of plastering mortars, and to observe the evolution of physical–mechanical characteristics in the fresh state: apparent density, consistency, and segregation tendency, and in the hardened state: apparent density, flexural strength, compression strength, and adhesion to the substrate, across time, at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. SEM and EDX tests were also performed to observe the microscopical characteristics. The experimental program studied four types of plastering mortars: the reference mortar—CS IV, and three mortars in which aggregates have been replaced with glass waste in the following proportions, by mass: 15%, 30%, and 45%. Results obtained on fresh properties (apparent density and consistency) indicate a decrease in values as the percentage of glass increases, with the exception of the mortar with 30% aggregated glass replacement. The flexural strength and the compressive strength were improved by replacing 30% of the aggregates with glass waste and were not significantly impacted by a replacement of 15%. Mechanical properties decreased at a replacement level of 45%. All glass aggregate mortars had lower adhesion strength to the brick substrate than the reference mortar by up to 70%. SEM and EDX analyses showed the morphology of the studied mortars and the processes taking place to increase mechanical strength. Further research directions are proposed, including studying the glass particles, the occurrence of alkali–silica reactions, durability, and improvement of adhesion to the substrate, for progressing towards the most viable, locally sourced, waste-containing plastering mortar.

Durability properties of lightweight concrete with ceramic mould casting waste

As economies and industrialisation have grown, the foundry industry has produced a significant amount of ceramic mould casting waste (CMCW). To promote resource utilisation, this study investigates recycling CMCW as a partial replacement for lightweight aggregates in lightweight concrete. The durability of lightweight concrete mixes with varying CMCW content was studied using surface electrical tests, ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements, non-steady-state accelerated chloride penetration tests and carbonation resistance experiments. The results indicate that a lightweight concrete containing 80% CMCW exhibited greater density and uniformity, greater resistance to chloride ion penetration and better resistance to carbonation. These findings suggest that CMCW can be an effective and sustainable replacement for lightweight aggregate in lightweight concrete, improving durability and environmental performance. This research contributes to the development of sustainable construction materials and provides insights for the use of CMCW in the foundry industry.

Assessment of POFA-Pervious Concrete Performance with Oil Palm Shells as a Partial Aggregate Replacement

Introduction: In Malaysia today, periods of excessive rain can result in flooding poses a significant challenge. The existing drainage system struggles to manage the wastewater effectively. In addressing the persistent issue of flooding in Malaysia, this issue’s solution was recommended to introduce pervious concrete (PC). Recognizing the urgency of finding sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, the present study focuses on the application of PC as a potential remedy that allows water to infiltrate through its porous structure. Aims: Despite the potential benefits of PC, there exists a notable gap in the understanding of its performance, especially when incorporating oil palm shells (OPS) as a partial aggregate replacement in POFA-pervious concrete (PPC). OPS is an agricultural waste material abundant in palm oil-producing regions, remarkably in Malaysia. This research aims to bridge this gap to evaluate the performance of PPC and PPC with OPS. By addressing the performance of PPC at different OPS replacement levels and curing ages, the lack of such detailed investigations in the existing body of knowledge underscores the novelty and importance of this present research. Methods: Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of PPC and PPC incorporating OPS comprising density, water absorption, void content, and compressive strength. All the tests were conducted at 7 and 28 days after the hardened concrete was cured in water. Results: The results revealed that as the OPS content increased, the compressive strength of PPC with OPS decreased but was significantly higher than recommended in the standard. Conversely, the reduction in strength was accompanied by an improvement in water absorption, making PPC encompassing OPS suitable for applications. The void content of the PPC increased with higher OPS replacement levels, indicating an increase in porosity. This increase in porosity led to a decrease in the density of the PPC incorporating OPS. Conclusion: The findings of this research suggest that the incorporation of OPS as an aggregate replacement in PPC can offer advantages in terms of water absorption. The inclusion of 10% OPS significantly and positively affects the performance of PPC.

Influence of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Aggregates on Strength and Durability Properties of Concrete Mixes in Rigid Pavements

The use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) aggregates in rigid pavements instead of conventional aggregates in Himalayan regions solves the problem associated with shrinking natural resources and dumping of wastes. This study studied the effect of partial replacement of conventional coarse aggregates by RAP in Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) mixes suitable for rigid pavements. A total of 114 specimens (cubical and cylindrical) were cast and tested for mechanical and durability properties as per ASTM and IS code guidelines, partially replaced with CRAP by 25%, 50%, and 75% by weight. The simultaneous effect of fly ash addition by partial replacement of cement by it was also studied. The study concludes that 25% partial replacement by CRAP with 10% fly ash as partial replacement of cement led to the achievement of the strength benchmark as mandated by IRC SP 44 (2014). It was also observed that durability properties such as resistance to acid attack, sulphate attack and carbonation also improved in DLC mixes, including CRAP and fly ash, when compared to control mixes.

Experimental Study on the Durability Performance of Sustainable Mortar with Partial Replacement of Natural Aggregates by Fiber-Reinforced Agricultural Waste Walnut Shells

Through the recovery and reuse of agricultural waste, the extraction and consumption of natural aggregates can be reduced to realize the sustainable development of the construction industry. Therefore, this paper utilizes the inexpensive, surplus, clean, and environmentally friendly waste agricultural material walnut shell to partially replace the fine aggregates in mortar to prepare environmentally friendly mortar. Considering the decrease in mortar performance after mixing walnut shells, basalt fibers of different lengths (3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm) and different dosages (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%) were mixed in the mortar. The reinforcing effect of basalt fibers on walnut shell mortar was investigated by mechanical property tests, impact resistance tests, and freeze–thaw cycle tests. The damage prediction model was established based on the Weibull model and gray model (GM (1,1) model), and the model accuracy was analyzed. The experimental results showed that after adding basalt fibers, the compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength of the specimens with a length of 6 mm and a doping amount of 0.2% increased by 13.98%, 48.15%, and 43.75%, respectively, and the fibers effectively improved the defects inside the walnut shell mortar. The R²s in the Weibull model were greater than 87.38%, and the average relative error between the predicted life of the impacts and the measured values was greater than 87.38%. The average relative errors in the GM (1,1) model ranged from 0.81% to 2.19%, and the accuracy analyses were all of the first order.

Effect of partial replacement of aggregate with oil palm shell on compressive and flexural strength of fiber concrete

Considerable innovation has been applied to concrete material to achieve specific properties such as density, strength, environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, among others. This study focused on the replacement of a portion of the aggregate with oil palm shell (OPS) to utilize previously underutilized waste. Concrete containing OPS typically exhibits reduced compressive strength compared to standard concrete. To enhance the compressive and flexural strength of OPS-infused concrete, the introduction of fibers was explored as an innovative measure. A particular focus was placed on using fibers from discarded masks due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia and globally. The non-biodegradable nature of polypropylene fibers in these masks necessitates further measures to minimize waste. Different proportions of OPS were incorporated into the concrete mix: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, with each mix incorporating 0.20% mask fiber and 0.25% superplasticizer. Compressive strength testing employed cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 75 mm and a height of 150 mm, while flexural strength was assessed using beam specimens measuring 100 x 100 x 500 mm. The baseline compressive strength for concrete without OPS measured 17.76 MPa. The results of flexural strength testing revealed the highest value of 1.67 MPa for the 0% OPS mix and the lowest, 0.49 MPa, for the 100% OPS mix. Statistical analysis via analysis of variance (ANOVA) highlighted a notably significant correlation between the treatment combinations involving compressive strength and the replacement of OPS as coarse aggregate.

Mechanical characterization of fiber-reinforced rubberized recycled concrete

Dumping non-biodegradable wastes, such as construction and demolition waste (CDW) and scrap tires, is causing significant environmental problems. Thus, this study used recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and crumb rubber (CR) procured from CDW and scrap tires as a partial replacement of natural aggregates. 30% natural coarse aggregate (NCA) was replaced by RCA, and 0, 5, 10 and 15% natural fine aggregate (NFA) was replaced by CR. Besides these, 0.5% polypropylene (PP) fiber was incorporated into the concrete mixtures. Different physical and mechanical properties of rubberized recycled concrete (R2C) and fiber-reinforced rubberized recycled concrete (FR2C) were investigated. Microstructural analysis, chemical analysis, failure modes, and cost-effectiveness were also evaluated. Simplified regression equations have been proposed to predict various mechanical properties of R2C and FR2C mixtures. The inclusion of RCA, CR, and fiber decreased the slump value of the fresh concrete up to 69.7%. The compressive strength decreased with an increase in CR percentage, but it increased by including fiber content. Though all the R2C and FR2C specimens exhibited lower tensile and flexural strength, a marginal reduction was found in FR2C specimens containing up to 5% CR content, which was only 3.3% and 6.8% lesser compared to the control samples. The surface resistivity test revealed that the chloride ion penetrability may be very low for all the combinations of R2C and FR2C specimens. By raising the percentage of CR, the UPV decreased, but the addition of PP fiber slightly increased the value. The cost analysis results pointed out that both the R2C and FR2C combinations saved more energy (up to 2.22 times) and decreased fuel consumption (up to 20.2%). Finally, the present study will aid in advancing sustainable fiber-reinforced rubberized recycled concrete.

To Study the Concrete by Partial Replacement of Cement with Tobacco Waste and Bamboo Leaf Ash with Addition of Sugarcane Fibre

Abstract: The demand for concrete is growing with the growing demand for infrastructure, energy and resources. One of these harms comes from the large emission of carbon dioxide gases during the manufacturing procedure of cement. The leaves, when dried and burnt, produce ashes that have been found to be pozzolanic. The carbohydrate content in bamboo plays an important role in its strength and in improving its health. The partial replacement of aggregates is need for the future generation of concrete structures for the environment supportable. The depletion of the natural resources gets exhausted. We have think over the alternate replacement of the materials. In present work the partial replacement of the TWA and BLA with the Cement and addition of sugarcane fibers. The optimum percentage that was noticed, was at 12&12% of cement was replaced Tobacco waste ash and Bamboo leaf ash and for reinforcement 0.6% of addition Sugar cane fibers was used. The workability of mixture increases and after that there is decrease in the workability of the concrete when we increase the percentage of TWA and BLA. A series of experiment were carried out to measure the compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of the concrete. The results showed that the compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength increases with the adding TWA and BLA with the Cement with addition of sugarcane fibers.

An Experimental Study on Modified Concrete Using Partial Replacement of Gravel and Admixtures

Abstract: This study aims to test a concrete specimen with replacement partially of 15 % of the coarse aggregate by pieces of tires and volcanic aggregates and reduce 5% of the water/cement ratio by substituting with 4% percentages of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and 1% of superplasticizer. The main concrete components (cement: sand: gravel) were used in weight ratios (1:1.5:3) and a water to cement 0.45 was used and it was considered as a reference sample (Mix1). A water to cement ratio 0.40 was depended for the modified mixtures. Samples were cast for testing the compression strength with sizes 150 ×150 ×150 mm for ages 7 and 28 days. the absorption rate, with a size of 100 ×100 ×100 mm at age 28 days. Moreover, 150 ×150×150 mm for depth of penetration test at the age of 28 days. Briefly, the observed results were exhibited that the partial replacement of normal aggregate in concrete with volcanic aggregate affects negatively on the workability, so 4% of the polymer SBR and 1% of the superplasticizer have improved the workability. The improvement in the workability of concrete contributed to reducing the ratio of water to cement required for mixing compared to ordinary concrete, and this in turn led to an improvement in performance of hardened concrete. In addition, the reduction of the permeability level. The results also illustrated that the replacement of the gravel in the modified mixtures (Mix 3 and Mix 2) reduces the weight of hardened concrete by (10-12%) and (7-9%) compared with conventional concrete, respectively, which makes it suitable for use in mediumweight concrete applications. Moreover, it can be concluded that the strength properties of the modified mix with volcanic aggregate improved by 19-20% compared to that of the unmodified concrete. While the modified concrete by cutting tires showed significant deterioration in the concrete's resistance 21% despite the reduction of concrete permeability.

Using cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) waste in production of concrete: An experimental study

This paper investigates the feasibility of using cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) waste as a partial replacement of conventional stone aggregates to produce concrete. Specifically, the effects of XLPE waste content (0, 5, 10, and 15 vol% of coarse and fine aggregates) and water-to-cement (W/C) ratio (0.45, 0.50, and 0.55) on the fresh properties (slump, unit weight, and air content) and hardened properties (bulk unit weight, ultrasonic pulse velocity, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), split tensile strength (T), and flexural strength (F)) of concrete were investigated. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed to study the interfacial transition zones (ITZs) at the different conditions. The results show that the addition of more XLPE improves the workability or slump (by 8% to 51%), decreases the unit weight (by 0.16% to 2.20%), but does not noticeably affect the air content of the fresh concrete (all ∼1.5%). Increasing the XLPE content results in a decrease of the UCS (by 23% to 60%) but improves the ductility and increases the T/UCS (by 19% to 144%) and F/UCS (by 22% to 174%) ratios of the concrete. The decrease of the UCS with a higher XLPE content is mainly due to the weaker ITZ between the XLPE and the binder. The study clearly indicates that the XLPE waste can partially replace the conventional stone aggregates to produce concrete for different applications specified by industry.
