The series Cinta Pertama Ayah addresses the issue of sexual violence and depicts the struggle of parents in protecting their children and providing the best parenting according to their perspectives. This research aims to represent various forms of parenting styles and reveal the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings contained in the series Cinta Pertama Ayah. Utilizing Roland Barthes semiotic analysis to uncover the meaning of signs in the series, this research is also reinforced by Santrock's theory of parenting. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with observation, interviews, and literature study as data collection techniques. The results show that parents who adopt an authoritarian parenting style tend to make children secretly violate the rules given. Conversely, parents who adopt a democratic parenting style tend to make children more open and communicative. Different from permissive parenting, where children feel freer but often struggle to control themselves due to the lack or leniency of restrictions given. This research provides in-depth insights into how various parenting approaches can influence child development in the context of the series.

Unraveling the Complexity of the Gluten-Free Sugar-Free Diet: An Analysis of Parental Struggles in Providing Nutrition for Children with Special Needs

This study aims to explore the level of parental knowledge regarding the Gluten-Free Sugar-Free (GFSF) diet and to identify the various challenges they face in its implementation for children with special needs. Using a quantitative survey approach, data were collected from 48 participating parents. Results showed that 50% of respondents had a high level of knowledge about the GFSF diet, 37.5% had moderate knowledge, and 12.5% had basic knowledge. No respondents had low knowledge. However, all respondents (100%) reported experiencing significant challenges in implementing the GFSF diet, including difficulties in accessing food ingredients, costs, and lack of practical knowledge. These findings indicate the need for more targeted interventions to support parents in overcoming these challenges, including improving the accessibility and affordability of GFSF products and providing educational programs tailored to their specific needs. This study provides important insights for developing effective strategies to support the health and well-being of children with special needs through the GFSF diet.

Linking heart and mind - lived experiences of parents to children with congenital heart disease and mental health issues.

Children with congenital heart disease are more likely to receive special educational services in schools and have an increased risk of mental health issues. We explored the lived experiences of parents caring for a child with heart disease and concurrent mental health issues in Denmark. Semi-structured interviews with ten parents (age 39-57 years) to these children (age 5-17 years) were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three Group Experiential Themes (GETs) were generated from the analysis: The first GET, Parental roles and caring behaviours, described parental struggles of fulfilling their parenting role ideals and experiences with stigmatization of MHI. GET two, Parental reflections on their illness explanations, portrayed how parents utilize different illness explanations to make sense of their child's MHI. GET three, Differences in access to help and support, captured how the CHD affected overall access to mental health support. The results may inform various topics of importance for health professionals to address in their clinical encounters with these families.

Self-Acceptance of Parents with Hearing Disability Child

Parents sometimes must face the reality that their child is different with other children. One of it is hearing disability. Mostly children with hearing disability also have difficulties in producing sound and even speak. That makes the parents can’t understand their children. This is a qualitative research (case study) that was made to try to understand the struggle of parents who have child with hearing disability. While both of the parents were “normal” how they can accept the condition of their child and also how they see themselves. The result shows that the parents try their best to accept the situation. They even try to give the best therapy and facility that can help their child. All the things that they do is a kind of compensate for their child condition. During their struggle to accept the condition of their child, they also need support from people around them.

Advanced parental cancer and adolescents: Parenting issues and challenges.

An estimated 609,820 child-rearing adults in 2023 died from advanced cancer, affecting 153,675 dependent children. Although children are known to suffer significant distress when a parent is diagnosed with cancer, few studies have described parents' views of their adolescent's behavioral response to their advanced cancer or what the parent did to interpret or manage that response. To describe patient-reported concerns about their adolescent and how they responded to their adolescent's behavior. Single occasion interviews were administered to 6 adolescent-rearing parents with Stage IV cancer. Interviews were analyzed using inductive content analysis by trained coders. Trustworthiness of results was protected through peer debriefing, coding to consensus, and maintaining an audit trail. The core construct that explained study data was Being There without Taking Over, comprised of 4 domains: Struggling to Read My Child, Attempting to Talk with My Child about My Cancer, Trying to Maintain Optimism, and Understanding My Child. Parents were deeply concerned about the impact of their advanced cancer on their adolescent but were unable to distinguish between cancer-related distress and adolescent angst. They feared initiating cancer-related discussions and struggled with their own feelings of guilt and parental inadequacy but did not turn to professionals for help. Adolescent-rearing patients with advanced disease need to be triaged into services that offer a framework from which parents can interpret their child's behavior and learn ways to have adolescent-appropriate conversations about the cancer. Such services should also help parents gain skills to manage feelings of parental inadequacy and guilt. In the absence of services, parents struggle and do not know how to interpret and respond to their adolescent's cancer-related behavior.

Assessment of Quality of Life of Parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy

Background: Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a broad spectrum of motor disability which is non progressive and is caused by damage to the brain at or around birth. Care of a child with cerebral palsy is a source of tension and struggle for parents and causes many problems in meeting the child’s needs. Understanding the quality of life of this category of parents , will contribute entire and sufficient physiotherapeutic interventions by various techniques and examine what structural changes could be made to increase parent satisfaction. Study Design: This study is a cross sectional study approach to assess the quality of life of these parents in Pune. A sample of 30 parents of children of cerebral palsy age 3-17 years was selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected using WHO-QOL BREF, Parental stress index, Beck depression inventory questionnaire, focusing on quality of life, stress and depression of parents. Method: 30 Participants were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Convenient sampling was done. Informed consent was obtained before data collection. Demographic details were recorded, and participants responded to the questionnaire, focusing on physical health, psychological health, social relationship and environmental barriers, stress and depression level. Descriptive statistics analyses were conducted to analyze the data. Results: The result showed as compare to father mother experienced lower quality of life, average depression level and increased stress level. This finding emphasizes the quality of life is severely affected suggesting the need to have family- centered approach for the management of children with cerebral palsy and evaluate unique challenges and experiences of parents to improve communication and support. Conclusion: This study concludes that the Quality of Life in Mothers is lower than that of Fathers of Cerebral Palsy child.

“Do You Know Where the Dragons Are?” - Introducing a Novel Enactive Framework to Map the Wide Unknown of Social Spaces With Neurodivergent Young People

Experiences of being are fundamentally different for neurodivergent young people. Differences in brain connectivity and function conferred by neurodivergence give rise to differences in construal processes underlying intersubjective engagement and shared meaning. Normative therapeutic and educational interventions refer to ‘social communication disorders’, ‘cognitive inflexibility’ and ‘social anxiety’. Peers call them ‘weird’. Parents struggle with guilt, exasperation and despair. The world demands social conformity. “Toby” (11yrs) requested a map and sword to slay the fearsome dragons lurking in the unknown spaces between himself and others- between here and there; intention and action; words and meaning; friend and foe. This paper describes a contextualizing model in a novel systematized approach to meeting the social engagement challenges of neurodivergent young people, devised in collaboration with those young people as Experts by Experience. The approach was formulated on the principle that social competence in neurodivergence should be shaped around self- discovery of authentic modes of being and relating, rather than imposed normative criteria. The 12 Social Spaces model integrates theoretical and clinical principles of Personal Construct Psychology, Enactivism, play theory, neurocognition and social competence, to provide a contextualizing framework of twelve interactional spaces to scaffold social cognition during evolving play between neurodivergent young people.

Understanding parental perspectives on young children's oral health (≤ 4 years) growing up in a disadvantaged neighbourhood of Amsterdam, the Netherlands: an exploratory study.

Families' understanding towards oral health problems among young children is poorly studied. More insight into parents' experiences, especially of those living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, is needed to address persistent oral health inequalities. This qualitative study aims to explore parental perspectives on children's oral health (≤ 4 years) and the opportunities they see to improve children's oral health. Forty-seven mothers and five fathers with different migration backgrounds from a disadvantaged neighbourhood in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, participated in our study. Semi-structured interviews (n = 27), participant observations (n = 7) and one focus group discussion were conducted. A thematic data analysis was used. Parents describe their daily life with young children as busy, hectic and unpredictable. Parents seem to be most concerned about parenting. Mothers, in particular, feel fully responsible for raising their children and managing daily complexities. While most parents value their children's oral health, they all experience challenges. Parents find it hard to limit daily candy intake and to handle unwilling children during tooth brushing. They feel limited support for these issues from their household, social network and professionals. Parental struggles in children's oral health are complex and interrelated as they occur across family, societal, community and professional levels. Given the complex daily reality of families with young children, establishing and maintaining healthy oral health habits seems not at the top of parents' minds. They ask for advice in the upbringing of their children backed up by social support, increased attention to children's oral health within the community and professional assistance. Collaborating with parents as knowledgeable partners might be the first step in acting upon the endeavour to address oral health inequality among young children.

Teacher-Parent Collaborative Mentoring Practices on Scholastic Success of Learners

This study explores parental involvement in the modular learning of high school students, focusing on challenges faced, teacher interventions, and the perceived benefits of teacher-parent mentoring. Through in-depth interviews with 80 parents and 5 teachers, the qualitative research uncovers challenges in content mastery, learning environments, material organization, and progress monitoring. Teachers respond with interventions such as workshops, home visitations, and resource provisions. The study reveals that parents struggle with understanding complex subjects, limited learning spaces, and organizing materials. Teachers' interventions include training sessions, home visits, and supplementary materials to address these challenges. Additionally, the research highlights the positive impact of teacher-parent mentoring on scholastic success. Recommendations include continuous training for parents, home visitation programs, resource provisions, progress monitoring support, and institutional backing for mentorship initiatives. These insights contribute to educational practices, guiding the development of effective support systems for high school learners in modular learning environments, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between teachers and parents.

Objectives This study aims to research and find features of the experiences that the parents of elementary school students had in supporting their children’s remote classes. Methods The phenomenological methodology was chosen by having in-depth research on what the parents had experienced while being involved in their children’s online classes and by turning it into a structure to define the meaning of the “experience.” For this study, ten primary caregivers of elementary school students in grades 3 and 4 who had experienced remote learning due to COVID-19 were selected as the research subject through criterion and snowball samplings. Results Parents’ experiences with remote learning for elementary school students were categorized into two cases: the experience of direct involvement in and the adaptation process to remote learning. The experience of direct involvement was represented by an unprepared start to school and adapting to remote learning by parental struggles, “piling up of worries,” and a re-recognition of the school’s limitations and roles. The characteristics of parents' educational involvement in remote learning for their elementary school children are categorized into in-class support and out-of-class support. The in-class support is the role of a teaching assistant, whereas the out-of-class support is divided into academic support and non-academic support. Conclusions Parents' direct experience of remote learning for elementary school children was bewilderment. However, through adaptation, it became an opportunity to rethink the roles of schools and parents. First, parents' educational involvement in distance learning for elementary school children was characterized by their role as learning facilitators in class. Second, the “cognitive involvement” of parents' educational engagement in remote learning for elementary school children increased slightly, suggesting that remote learning could potentially in-crease parents' “cognitive involvement.” Third, an intensification of “academic involvement,” in which parents were concerned about their children's “insufficient learning” and used tutoring to support early learning to get ahead. Lastly, in the out-of-class support, parents were “emotionally involved” by building “happy” time with their children, thus relieving stress.

This research is aimed at discussing the concept of education from the Birrul Walidain perspective Q.S. Al-Luqman, paragraphs 13–14. Birrul walidain is a praise to both parents. In the Qur'an, Allah has revealed many signs concerning Birrul Walidain. One of them is in Luqman's letter, verses 13 and 14. The purpose of this study is to convey or recall the struggle of parents in caring for and nurturing their children and considering the importance of instilling morality in their children as early as possible. This method of research uses library research, better known as librarian research. The results of this study can be used as examples for children in the present and future to always apply the contents of Al-Luqman verses 13–14.

Modernizing the tradition: Mengaji among children of urban Muslim families in Indonesia

Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the main source of Islamic values, and teaching it to children early is important. The tradition of mengaji, or learning the Qur’an, has been impacted by globalization and modernization. Still, new methods such as online learning and fun-learning techniques have emerged to make the tradition more innovative and creative for children. This article discusses how modernization changes the way of learning activities in reading al-Quran for children (mengaji) in urban areas. Their tradition of going to the TPA/TPQ (Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an) shifted to the modern way. It taught Muslims to live alongside digital technology and an internet connection following current conditions. Following the new opportunity to learn Qur’an intensively for children, private Islamic institutions attract some urban muslim families to teach their children Qur’anic reading, such as Binar Qur’an institution. The analysis is conducted by descriptive qualitative research, which is stated by the respondents verbally and in real behavior. The data is obtained through reduction data, explaining data, and drawing a conclusion. Research shows that the impact of modernization forces people to educate their children on Qur’anic reading. It shows that the situation helps the Muslim family to be modern regarding Islamic education. Moreover, the hard struggle of parents to preserve their children in the Islamic path of society is by busying their children with positive activities such as mengaji to fulfill their growth with the Islamic nuance and to produce a better Muslim generation in the future.

Parental struggles and successes of families with children with special educational needs (SEN)

The aim is to search for remedies in the face of difficulties and failures in workingwith a child with special educational needs (SEN). In the materials posted in review ofexperience reports of teachers and parents of children with SEN. An attempt was madeto systematize the advantages and disadvantages of integrated teaching. The materialhas also been supplemented with the latest teacher review. The results of the analyzesand research are postulates addressed to parents and teachers with particular attentionto subjectivity of the student.

THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE EMOTIONAL STRUGGLES OF PARENTS HAVING A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The very core of this study is to know the challenges and struggles of parents having a child with special needs and how to help them. This phenomenological study targets the problem in every household having difficulty with their exceptional child and has the solution to the challenges each parent experiences. The researcher aims to understand the familys feelings and most profound thoughts about having a child with special needs through interviews, observation, and immersion in the schools intended to have the respondents. Ten parents who have a child with special needs from Don Julian Rodriguez Sr. Elementary School and Davao City Special School were interviewed and allowed to be engaged in the said study. The researcher wanted to identify different struggles that they are facing every day, their coping mechanisms, and their insights that will be able to help other parents who suffer the emotional struggles of having a child with special needs. With the data gathered, most parents have emotional struggles because they need an idea of how and where to start helping their children with special needs. The researcher recommended empowerment, training, and workshops for parents with a child with special needs and building connections with a community that advocates and highlights helping and educating parents on how to educate their child with special needs.

Isolation in a Sea of "Experts": Identifying the Parental Struggles Caring for Children With Early-Onset Obesity.

Background: Severe early-onset childhood obesity is diagnosed by having a BMI >120% of the 95th percentile before age 5 years. Treatment for early-onset obesity is frequently unsuccessful. Prior studies have shown parents of children with obesity often face stigmatization and those who experience weight bias also experience poorer medical care. Home environment influences many risk factors, and parents are crucial for intervention. Research on the parental perspective of care is lacking and greater understanding could increase the effectiveness of treatment. We sought to understand the common stressors and obstacles parents encounter caring for a child with early-onset severe obesity. Methods: Parents of children with early-onset severe obesity participated in semistructured interviews. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using hybrid thematic analysis. Results: We identified a global theme of "Isolation in a sea of 'experts'," supported by three organizing themes: (i) Facing barriers at every turn; (ii) Carrying all the burdens; and (iii) Struggling to get their child seen as an individual. Within each organizing theme, subthemes emerged that highlighted the struggles that parents encountered. These included significant conflict with others when attempting to implement dietary changes (e.g., spouses, other children, and extended family), protecting their child's self-esteem, perceived weight bias from medical staff, lack of experienced obesity clinicians, lack of access to weight management services, and judgment from others (e.g., family, friends, and strangers). Conclusions: This study highlighted that many parents of children with early-onset severe obesity felt significant struggles, both internal and external. Understanding the barriers parents face when caring for their children is critical to improving relationships and medical care.

A Qualitative Study of Pandemic-Induced Telework: Federal Workers Thrive, Working Parents Struggle

This study examines the forced transition to telework during the COVID-19 pandemic using qualitative data from two open surveys administered by the Federal News Network in 2020: in the first two months and, then, 10 months into the pandemic. We provide in-depth analysis of 1,969 open-ended comments from 1,589 federal employees collected seven months apart, telling the story of how they continued performing their responsibilities under a full-time telework schedule. Federal employees perceive the transition to full-time telework during the pandemic had a positive effect on organizational performance, work productivity and work-life balance for most federal employees. An exception is working parents, who faced significant hardships due to the pandemic. Additionally, results show pandemic-induced telework was credited with mixed successes for job satisfaction and social integration, and had not been successful in terms of supervisor support and organizational trust, which puts the success of the social contract theory in these situations in jeopardy. Finally, results suggest that federal employees envision more work will become telework-eligible in the new normal and welcome this shift.

Journey towards an unreachable destiny: parental struggles in the intergenerational transmission of Chinese as a heritage language in Australia

Abstract This article investigates Chinese-Australian parents’ ideologies and visions about the maintenance of Chinese as a heritage language (CHL) as well as their struggles in using family language policy (FLP) as defence and coping mechanisms to address tensions associated with the transgenerational transmission of CHL. Language policy defined as an assemblage of ideologies, practices and management and parental agency understood as parents’ capacity to pursue their visions are deployed within Curdt-Christiansen’s dynamic model of FLP that accommodates a complex interplay of internal and external factors. The study focuses on 15 parents who were committed to and made agentive efforts to maintain CHL and transmit it to their next generations. Using interviews, parents’ visions based on their children’s future CHL proficiency and their agentive efforts around CHL transmission were examined. The findings revealed sharp contrasts between parents’ future visions and their lived experiences of struggles at present. Anticipating the eventual loss of CHL among their future generations in the Australian context, the parents struggled to negotiate FLP to combat the foreseeable language shift and defend their visions. The findings have implications for individuals, families, communities, institutions, and policies concerning the maintenance of heritage languages in Australia and globally.

The impact of the COVID-19 school closures on families with children with disabilities: A qualitative analysis.

The unprecedented school closures in response to COVID‐19 have been associated with a number of negative impacts on students and their families. In addition to these difficulties, parents of students with disabilities are faced with prepandemic stresses and challenges that may be exacerbated by the school closures. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the experiences and struggles of parents of children identified with a disability during the COVID‐19 school closures. The 15 participants were parents of children with a range of disabilities, including Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and learning disabilities. The analyses revealed four major themes: school connection, virtual learning, potential impacts for students, and managing change. The experiences of these caregivers during the COVID‐19 school closures and subsequent shift to remote learning have implications for educational and treatment planning. Recommendations for how school psychologists and school teams may best support students with disabilities and their families are included.

Challenges Encountered and Technical Assistance Needed by Parents and Learners Utilizing Modular Distance Learning: Basis for a Proposed Support Program

The shift from face-to face to distance learning brought about by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic is a major adjustment to all school administrators, teachers, students and parents. The study aimed to determine the challenges encountered and needed support of parents and learners in an elementary school of the Schools Division of Meycauayan City as basis for crafting a contextualized support program. It employed a mixed method design using survey-questionnaire and interview guide as data gathering tools to 123 parents and 10 learners respectively. Frequency and percentage were used to describe the demographic profile, frequency counts and ranking were used on the challenges encountered and support/technical assistance needed by parents while thematic analysis was used to describe the experiences of the learners. The study found out that difficulty in independent learning, difficulty in concentrating on studies and parent’s limited knowledge on the content of child’s lessons are the top struggles of parents in the modular distance learning while almost all learner-respondents describe their experiences of distance learning as difficult because of difficulty in learning by themselves, lack of reference materials for more examples, limited guidance from parents and teachers, challenges in load to research and difficulty in understanding English. Moreover, both respondents are unanimous in declaring that provision of additional reference materials will greatly help lessen the struggles they encountered. Therefore, it is recommended that the support program crafted should be implemented and monitored to fully reinforce the continuity of learning amidst the challenges encountered in the first quarter.

Concerns of parents about children's overweight and obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study

Background and aimsSince the end of 2019, the world has been dealing with a new crisis caused by the widespread and global outbreak of the coronavirus that has affected various aspects of life. The stay-at-home orders issued to prevent the virus from spreading have caused many problems for families, such as obesity and overweight, particularly among children. As parents play a key role in the prevention of childhood obesity, the present qualitative study aimed to examine the experiences of parents regarding the obesity or overweight of their children during the outbreak of coronavirus. Design and methodsThis study was performed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The sampling method was purposeful, and the required data were collected through in-depth, unstructured, and face-to-face interviews with 16 parents of children with obesity or overweight. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman conventional content analysis approach. ResultsThe findings were divided into five main themes, including overeating while stuck at home, leading to the sedentary life, disturbed sleep-wake rhythm of the children, indifference of the children towards their appearance, and the inability of parents to control the obesity of their children. ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected families of children with obesity in various ways. The experiences of such parents provide new insight into parental struggles around managing their child's obesity particularly during such stressful times. ImplicationsAn in-depth study of the experiences of the parents and perception of their challenges and concerns about childhood obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic can lead to the development of useful and effective strategies for the control of childhood obesity.
