Roles of parents in life satisfaction and educational hope among Chinese high school students.

The well-being of the Chinese high school students linked to the National Higher Education Entrance Examination, known as gaokao, has been a spotlight education issue in China. This study employed self-determination theory and Bourdieu's sociocultural theory to examine the relationship between life satisfaction, educational hope, and parental support among Chinese high school students. A number of 3,810 high school students from eight schools in Jiangsu, China, completed a validated context-relevant questionnaire. Structural equation model analysis suggested that parental support significantly impacted students' life satisfaction and educational hope. Findings showed that parental intangible support in terms of providing information, advice, encouragement, praise, and care has a direct and significant impact on the life satisfaction of Chinese youth. The extent to which students attach importance to and put effort into achieving their educational aspirations, known as goal commitment, mediated the relationship between parental support and life satisfaction. Moreover, Chinese high school students' educational hope is shaped by their family. Parental support moderates goal commitment, which varies based on parental education background. In short, parents play a critical role in the growth and development of Chinese high school students.

Factors Affecting Academic Performance of BS Students in Mansehra City (Pakistan)

This study investigates the factors affecting the academic performance of BS students in Mansehra city. To make a relationship between social factors, parental factors, family background, basic facilities, economic factors, human resources, peer factors, demographic factors, gender and culture, institutional background, and student’s academic performance, the study used correlation analysis. Firstly, the reliability of the research instrument was established, and a proportionate random sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data was collected through closed ended questionnaires, and a sample size of 200 was drawn from three colleges in Mansehra city. The frequency analysis revealed that the sample comprises 75 percent female and 25 percent male students, and they belong to the 17-24 years age group. 95% of students show a parental educational background, which encourages children’s education. 92% of students' family income is essential to continuing their studies, and 98% of respondents think that human resources affect the student’s performance. The result from the regression model shows a significant relationship between social factors, parental factors, family background, basic facilities, economic factors, human resources, and the students' performance. In contrast, other factors like peer factors, demographic factors, gender and culture, and institutional background have an insignificant effect on the model. Any institution paying attention to students from low socioeconomic backgrounds could develop a support system for students by identifying financial aid and student loan schemes.

Socio-economic characteristics of parents on learners’ educational aspiration: Exploring mechanisms of impact

This study aims to examine the influence of the socio-economic status (SES) of parents on learners' educational aspirations in La Dade Kotopon of the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Socio-economic status of parents plays a pivotal role in shaping their child's educational aspirations and the pathways they envision for their future. Socio-economic status is a multidimensional construct encompassing various factors such as parental education, occupation, income, and family background. The study utilizes a quantitative research design, employing a sample of learners (230) from diverse socio-economic backgrounds within the Greater Accra region through the quota sampling technique. Also, the convenient sampling technique was used in selecting ten (10) teachers and thirty (30) parents. The data were collected using a questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics like frequencies, percentages, mean, and SD. It was found that most of the guardians of La Dade Kotopon Junior High School (JHS) were not employed, while a majority were into petty trading. Therefore, the income level of the guardians was low, placing most of them in low socio-economic backgrounds. This had affected the learners in terms of their choice of schools and their educational aspirations. Practical implications arise in designing targeted interventions and support programs aimed at fostering educational aspirations, especially for learners from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

PARENTAL BACKGROUND AS DETERMINANT OF CAREER CHOICE AMONG STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES, ACCRA, GHANA

The aim of the study was to examine how parental background variables (education, occupation and income) serve as determinants of career choice among the students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra. The simple random technique was used to select 200 respondents for this study. The Parental Variable and Career Choice questionnaires were used in collecting data. Descriptive statistical tests were used in analyzing data with the aid of the Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) software. Frequency distribution tables, pie chart and bar graph, binomial test, chi square and Mann-Whitney test were used to fulfil the objectives of the study. The results showed that both parental educational and occupational background have influence on the career choice of the students. Parental income however, did not prove to have any influence on career choice. Gender difference was also not found to influence career choice amongst target population. It was concluded that, parental educational and occupational background have an influence on students’ career choice but parental income was not found to determine students’ career choice. It is, therefore, recommended that parents and other stakeholders in career development of students take into consideration influence of parental education and occupation on career development of students and use them in guiding, shaping, educating, and introducing students to surge into the world of career interest exploration and career choice. Students should be encouraged to choose role models whose educational and occupational levels placed them high on good career progression to become their images of inspiration in career choice and preference.

Pendapat Orang Tua Murid Sekolah Tentang Komunikasi Pembelajaran Pasca Gempa Cianjur 2022

The Cianjur 2022 earthquake following the COVID-19 pandemic, made it necessary for the schools at Legok Nangka and Liung Tutut, Cugenang, Cibeureum, Cianjur, to have a full then partly on line teaching and learning system for their students. Observing the children’s enthusiasm to learning activities while accompanying them at a trauma healing activity not long after the earthquake, drew us to come back to these villages to find out about teaching and learning activities in this area. This study is to find out about the opinion of the students’ parents about the effectiveness of the post-earthquake learning activities. Theory used to explain this study is the Theory of Process of Communications by Harold D Laswell, which says that communication is about ‘who says what to whom through which channel with what effects.’ Research methods used is quantitative descriptive, and data was collected through distributing questionnaires and interviews to some mothers and students. The research population was mothers of primary and secondary school students living at Legok Nangka and Liung Tutut, Cugenang, Cibeureum, Cianjur. Sampling methods used was total sampling. The result of this study was that according to mothers of primary and secondary school living in these villages, the effectiveness of teaching and learning activities until August, even December 2023 (for some schools) was still low, since learning facilities has not yet being fully recovered after the Cianjur earthquake and other obstacles. It was not advised to imply online teaching and learning activities for school students, especially at villages where the educational background of parents is low.

Quality of Life Comparisons in Strabismic Children Managed Surgically or Conservatively

Abstract
 Introduction & Objectives : Strabismus causes visual impairment due to ocular misalignment, interferes cosmetic appearance, results in negative self-image and impacts quality of life. Studies in adults have shown that successful strabismus surgery improves quality of life, but awareness of strabismus surgery and its benefits are still lacking. Studies regarding the impact of conservative treatment on quality of life are limited, so further study is required.
 Methods : This was an observational study comparing 2 unpaired groups. The method used in this study was cross-sectional and samples were obtained purposefully according to medical records and consecutively based on outpatient visits.
 Results : Thirty-six subjects in group A, who had undergone strabismus surgery and 33 subjects in group B who were still managed conservatively were included in this study. Both groups had similar demographic characteristics, except parental education background (p=0.048). Comparative test of2 unpaired groups in this study showed higher quality of life scores in group A (p=0.0001).
 Conclusion : The quality of life in subjects who had undergone strabismus surgery was better than that in those who were still managed conservatively.

Influence of Parental Variables on Academic Achievement of Business Education Students. A Case Study of Teritary Institutions in Delta State.

This study examined the influence of parental variables on academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State. Four research questions were raised and answered and four null and alternate hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance to guide the study. The main purpose of the study was to determine the influence of parental variables on business education students’ academic achievement in tertiary institutions in Delta State. Specifically, the study sought to determine the influence of parental financial support on academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State; influence of parental involvement on academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State; influence of level of parental educational background on academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State and the comparative influence of parental variables on academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State. The correlational survey research and expo-facto was used. The population of the study was 441 business education students and the sample size was 172. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire and was validated by five experts. The reliability coefficient of the instrument using PPMC reported r=0.78. The data collected was analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, Chi-Square and Multivariate Simple Linear Regression Analysis. Findings of the study include: Parental financial support influence academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State to a high extent. In addition, parental involvement influence academic achievement of business education students in tertiary institutions in Delta State to a high extent. It was therefore concluded that that parental financial support, involvement and level of parents education background influence business education students’ academic achievement in tertiary institutions in Delta State to a high extent. The study also concluded that all the parental variables (parental financial support, involvement and level of parents educational background) do significantly influence business education students’ academic achievement in tertiary institutions in Delta State. It was recommended that parents should continually be involve in the academic activities of their children at all time. Also that Government should provide loans, grants and scholarship to students as this will assist them in boasting their academic achievement among others.

Research on the Influence of Family Factors on Childrens Psychological Health

The family environment plays a crucial role in an individuals development and growth. Factors within the family environment include parents educational level, the way family members interact with each other, and the familys economic situation, among others. These factors collectively influence aspects such as an individuals personality, attitudes, values, and behaviors. Parents educational background and parenting style have a decisive impact on a childs education. In dual-income families, parents often lack sufficient time and energy to focus on their childs growth, which can lead to emotional deficiencies in the child. Additionally, the familys economic situation also affects personal development. Economically disadvantaged families may be unable to provide good education and living conditions, limiting opportunities for individuals and potentially placing them at a disadvantage in social development. Therefore, the influence of the family environment on individuals cannot be ignored, and we should prioritize and improve it. There is a close relationship between family environment and childrens mental health. Numerous studies have shown that family factors play an important role in the development of childrens psychological well-being.

Parenting and parent–child home practice during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case in central China

The current study aims to explore parents’ perceptions of parenting and parent–child activities at home with children aged 3–6 during the pandemic in China. A parenting survey was conducted to investigate parental role, age, educational background, work productivity, and different parenting categories during the lockdown period. We also examined the experiences of young children’s participation in extracurricular activities before and after the stay-at-home policy was implemented as well as their activities with parents during the lockdown period. The results showed that parents’ work productivity affected their perceptions of well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Children spent less time on extracurricular activities during the lockdown period, but some particular activities increased in frequency, especially academic extracurricular activities.

What Makes a Qualified Chef? Olfactory and Sociodemographic Predictors of Vocational Exam Results in Culinary School Students

Research has demonstrated links between sociodemographic background and educational achievements in vocational education and training. Student achievements may be additionally impacted by individual characteristics specifically relevant to the domain of the professional training. In the context of professional culinary education, student achievement may be related to their olfactory ability as the human sense of smell is involved in food perception and preparation. However, whether sociodemographic factors and olfactory ability predict educational achievements has not been directly compared in the context of culinary vocational education, which formed the aim of the current study. To identify the strength of these predictors, we measured participants’ odor detection threshold, discrimination and identification ability with the “Sniffin’ Sticks” test battery and assessed individual significance of olfaction via a self-report survey. In addition to olfactory measures, sociodemographic data (student and parental educational background, financial status) were also analyzed to determine if they predict theoretical and/or practical exam scores. The results demonstrated that a student’s educational background was a significant predictor of scores in the theoretical (but not practical) exam. Parental educational background, financial status, and olfactory ability did not predict exam scores.

A Comparative Study of the Influence of Parental Career Behavior on Students' Career Decision-Making Self-efficacy in China and Indonesia's Vocational Colleges

This research intends to look into how students at vocational colleges in China and Indonesia choose their careers. In order to identify potential influences on students' career decisions, such as the impact of parental career behavior on students' career choice making self-efficacy, the Career choice Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSES-SF) and Parent Career Behaviors Checklist (PCBC) are utilized. This study is based on a questionnaire survey of 326 students from three vocational colleges (192 men and 134 women), with 194 of them coming from two vocational schools in China and 132 from an Indonesian vocational college that offers a 3-year curriculum. The majority of the 11 majors featured in this study are engineering-related. First, the study's findings show a substantial relationship between students' confidence in their ability to make professional decisions and their parents' job choices. Second, the results show that school year, class rank, and parental professional practices were very important indicators of students' self-efficacy in choosing career decisions. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that parental gender and educational background had no discernible influence on students' self-efficacy in making career decisions. Additionally, it reveals that there is no difference in the degree of career decision-making between students in China and Indonesia, indicating that the issue is with the parents' perceived career behavior.

Parenting stress and interactive engagement behaviors in children with developmental delay.

In clinical practice, the importance of interactive engagement behaviors is overlooked in children with developmental problems other than autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parenting stress affects children's development but lacks attention from clinicians. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of interactive engagement behaviors and parenting stress among non-ASD children with developmental delays (DDs). We also analyzed whether engagement behaviors affect parenting stress. At Gyeongsang National University Hospital, between May 2021 and October 2021, we retrospectively enrolled 51 consecutive patients diagnosed with DDs in language or cognition (but not ASD) in the delayed group and 24 typically developing children in the control group. The Korean version of the Parenting Stress Index-4 and Child Interactive Behavior Test were used to assess the participants. The median age of the delayed group was 31.0 months (interquartile range, 25.0-35.5 months); this group included 42 boys (82.4%). There were no intergroup differences in child age, child sex, parental age, parental educational background, mother's employment status, or marital status. Higher parenting stress (P<0.001) and fewer interactive engagement behaviors (P<0.001) were observed in the delayed group. Low parental acceptance and competence had the largest effects on total parenting stress in the delayed group. A mediation analysis revealed that DDs did not directly affect total parenting stress (β=3.49, P=0.440). Instead, DDs contributed to total parenting stress, which was mediated by children's overall interactive engagement behaviors (β=57.30, P<0.001). Interactive engagement behaviors were significantly reduced in non-ASD children with DDs and significantly mediated parenting stress. The importance of parenting stress and interactive behaviors in children with DDs should be further examined in clinical practice.

Influencing factors of parental selections of minimally invasive procedure in children's abdominal surgery: a cross-sectional study in China.

The purpose of our study was to explore the influencing factors of parental selections of minimally invasive procedure including laparoscopic or robotic methods in children's abdominal surgery. The questionnaire survey was conducted among the parents of patients who received abdominal laparoscopic or robotic surgery in our hospital from December 2020 to June 2022. The contents included basic information of the patients and parents, parental educational background, monthly income, insurance details and the parental considerations. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were applied for the influencing factors analysis. Six categories of diseases involving choledochal cyst (198 cases), spleen related diseases (31 cases), hirschsprung disease (40 cases), inguinal hernia (330 cases), adrenal tumor (15 cases) and ureteropelvic junction obstruction (73 cases) were included in this study. After univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis accomplished, we discovered that college degree or above (OR = 0.545, P < 0.001), monthly income > 5000 RMB (OR = 0.761, P < 0.001) and involving reconstruction during operation (OR = 0.842, P < 0.001) were the influencing factors for parental selections of robotic surgery. In children's abdominal surgery, parents with college degree or above, monthly income > 5000 RMB and considering the need for reconstruction during operation are more inclined to choose the robotic surgery.

Online Learning on Hindu Religious Religion and Thoughts During The Covid-19 Pandemic at Elementary School in Abang District, Karangasem District

The online learning system is an alternative learning system implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic with the aim of having regulations guided by teachers and students in elementary schools in Abang District, Karangasem Regency, so that learning can be carried out simultaneously to avoid lost learning. Various regulations issued by the government need joint support and commitment to the successful implementation of the online learning system. It is on this basis that this research was carried out to reveal three main problems, namely how is the online learning system in learning Hindu Religious Education and Budi Pakerti carried out at SD Abang Karangasem District?, what obstacles are faced in learning Hindu Religious Education and Budi Pakerti with the online system in SD Abang Karangasem District? and what are the implications of implementing an online learning system in Hindu Religious Education and Characteristics on the cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of elementary school students in Abang District, Karangasem Regency? To uncover these three problems, this study was designed as a qualitative research with a qualitative-interpretative approach. Data were collected by observation, interview, and document study techniques. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through interpretive constructivist analysis techniques, namely the construction of individual opinions then compared and a consensus of truth that was relative, subjective, and specific was sought. In the process of analysis, this research relies on constructivist theory, meaningful learning theory, and existentialism theory. Based on the methods and theories, this research concludes as follows. First, the implementation of online learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic, limited availability of online learning components, the existence of regulatory regulations, and avoiding lost learning. Second, the obstacles encountered in implementing the online learning system are the limitations of cellphone devices, quotas for students, regional topography, educational background of parents, and teacher professionalism. Third, the implication of implementing the online system in learning Hindu Religion and Moral Education is that students are less able to take part in online learning so that learning absorption is relatively low from the aspect of student knowledge, aspects of student attitudes become less disciplined, lack ethics, and courtesy, mastery of supporting skills is very limited , learning achievement decreased. This research found important facts related to the online learning system which included a circulating correlation between school infrastructure, geographical location, and the mindsets of implementers and policy makers. Theoretically, it was found that the concepts and theories used in this study correspond to the facts in the field, so that they can be flexibly affirmed in certain aspects as needed. The online learning system at SD Abang District, Karangasem Regency makes a positive contribution in avoiding lost learning.

Environmental attitudes of Chinese students in higher education institutions

This study investigates the influence of environmental attitudes of Chinese students in higher education institutions (HEIs). It included 988 students at ten higher education institutions and administered an “environmental attitudes inventory" questionnaire to investigate gender, grade level of study, institution level, parental educational background, scholarships, annual household income, students' leadership experience and the extent to which variables such as participation in environment-related courses affect students' attitudes towards the environment. Furthermore, the study relied on descriptive and analytical methods. The results show significant differences in grade, school level and parents' educational backgrounds on students' environmental attitudes. In contrast, gender, scholarship, annual family income and student leader experience related to the environment did not appear as significant factors. This paper suggests that education policymakers incorporate these influences into a vision of environmental educational reform to inform the remedial actions needed by higher education institutions.

Comparison of the Literacy Level on Major Environmental Issues of the G.C.E. (A/L) Students of Different Disciplines in Kandy District, Sri Lanka

The study aims to examine the environmental literacy level of G.C.E A/L students (comparable to British Advanced Level) in the Kandy District, Sri Lanka, and to evaluate environment modules embedded into the curriculum. Furthermore, we find the relationships between environmental literacy level and socioeconomic and discipline levels. A survey with a sample of 300 students was selected randomly from four different disciplines, with 25 students in each subject (biological science, mathematics, arts, and commerce) from three different types of schools (Public, Private, and International). A piloted, self-administered, and structured questionnaire with 44 items under six sections (personal background, environmental issues, attitudes, behavior, suggestion, and mitigation) was randomly distributed among the study sample. Results showed that most respondents reside in an urban area, the education level of parents was positioned in the G.C.E. (A/L) category, and the monthly total family income was more than SLR 90,000.00. Overall, the environmental literacy (EL) was similar among students of three different types of schools. The type of permanent residence, discipline, and educational background of parents were recognized as determining factors of EL levels (p &lt; 0.05). The environmental literacy knowledge of biological science students was the highest (44%), followed by mathematics (36%), art (32%), and commerce (28%). Furthermore, the EL of the biology discipline was significantly different from commerce (18%) and art (14%) students. Students acquired environmental knowledge from television and radio (44%), internet (22%), school (27%), and parents (7%). The A/L Curriculum evaluation results proved that much less environment-related components were included in the commerce, art, and mathematics subjects. Of the disciplines, geography (35%) and biological science (11%) included a higher amount of EL knowledge, comparatively. Students suggested that recycling/ reuse of waste conserves natural resources, the green building concept, and the use of public transportation to conserve the environment. This study recommends that environmental concepts should be integrated with formal G.C.E A/L syllabus with activity learning, especially for non-science disciplines, and that environment-related television and radio programs should be enhanced.

Worry and Psychosomatic Problems Among Adolescents in Sweden in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Unequal Patterns Among Sociodemographic Groups?

PurposeTo analyze potential associations between sociodemographic factors and adolescents' worry about family finances and other types of worries during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential associations between different worry themes and psychosomatic problems. MethodsFrom December 2020 to March 2021, 3,068 16–17 years old students in Sweden completed a questionnaire about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their schooling and everyday life. From April to June 2020, 70% of these students also responded to questions about their psychosomatic health. Logistic regression was applied to analyze the associations between sociodemographic factors and different worry themes and estimate the association between worry and psychosomatic problems. ResultsAcross all 13 worry themes, girls reported worry to a higher degree than boys. In most of the cases, adolescents with a lower parental educational background or immigrant background reported more frequent worrying. This was most evident for worry about family finances. The differences between adolescents with a Swedish background and those with a foreign background were large except for worry about climate change. All worry themes were associated with the students' psychosomatic health. Those who often or always experienced worry were more likely to report psychosomatic problems. Worry about family finances showed the highest odds ratio and marginal effect. DiscussionWorry about family finances during the COVID-19 pandemic turns out to be a strong and socially structured stressor that may widen the health inequalities among young people. This underlines the need for preventive and promoting measures aimed at supporting socioeconomic disadvantaged groups.

The Application of Storytelling in Teaching and Learning: Implication on Pupil’s Performance and Enrolment in Schools

The study employed a survey design approach to sampling valid respondents of 337 teachers from both private and public schools who are engaged in teaching languages. The results show that the application of storytelling in teaching and learning in both private and public schools, pupils/students' learning ability and skills, peer influence, improvement in teacher quality, qualification and improvement, learning materials and infrastructures, and pupils' performance in schools, have a positive impact on academic performance which also influence school enrolment. Hence, these regressed elements/factors need to be improved constantly, manage by other education-related development factors, and apply in both private and public schools to heighten performance and boost enrollment. Besides, it was revealed that low parental education background has an insignificant impact on school enrollment and performance, which simply indicate that low parents' educational attainment has no positive impact or does not determine whether parents will enroll their wards in school or not. The concept of storytelling and its application in teaching and learning language is a cross-edge approach to pupils’ performance and enrollment in schools. Inculcating this strategy will help gain students'/pupils' attention and involvement in the teaching and learning process, coupled with other supporting construct variables are means to heighten pupils/students' understanding, performance, and enrollment in schools. This is an essential component of the research because it underpins the very fabric of selecting the best alternative method and strategies in teaching to support learning in Nigeria. The study established strong policy support for educational/human development, teacher education, and school management practices as a prerequisite to improving both private and public schools. In essence, providing quality education for all is fundamental to creating a peaceful and prosperous world as supported by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal four (4).
