FPGA Implementation of a Phase Optimizer-Assisted PTS Scheme for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

This article proposes a phase optimizer-assisted partial transmit sequence (PO-PTS) for minimizing PAPR values in OFDM systems. The novel PO-PTS scheme after validation, based on simulation results, is implemented using a Xilinx system generator on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The phase optimizer (PO) module is employed to select optimal phase weighting factors to perform scaling with the data sequence in the PTS scheme. The computational complexity and the redundancy involved in producing the candidate signals are significantly reduced by the PO-PTS compared with the conventional PTS method. The proposed method reduces PAPR for a QPSK-OFDM signal by 56.16% compared to the original OFDM signal without compromising on the bit error rate (BER) performance. In addition, the performance of PO-PTS in terms of PAPR reduction for 32-QAM and 64-QAM modulated OFDM systems is also presented to justify the robustness of the proposed scheme. Moreover, when PO-PTS is implemented using FPGA, it uses only 1% of the hardware available in Virtex.

Boosted PTS Method with Mu-Law Companding Techniques for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

This paper proposes an enhanced PAPR reduction technique which combines an enhanced PTS method with Mu-Law companding. The enhanced PTS method improves performances in both the partitioning and phase rotation steps. Enhancement in partitioning is achieved through a judicious incorporation of AP-PTS scheme into the IP-PTS. As for phase rotation, an optimal set of rotation vectors is derived based on the correlation properties of candidate signals. The PAPR reduction of this enhanced PTS method is further improved by annexing Mu-Law companding at the end of the enhanced PTS. This application of Mu-Law characteristic in the time domain of OFDM signal significantly improves the PAPR reduction capability of the approach. Simulation results show that the PAPR performance of the enhanced PTS method with Mu-Law companding technique on various scenarios with different modulation schemes is better than that of the PRP-PTS. This approach can be considered as a very attractive candidate for achieving a significant reduction of PAPR, while maintaining a low computational complexity.

Demonstrating the Effect of Using Goppa Coding with Hybrid Selective Mapping and Partial Transmit Sequence Technique for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a multi-carrier modulation technique which provides numerous advantages like high spectral efficiency, minimal interference, low multipath fading, etc. But Peak-to-average Power Ratio is a severe challenge in using such multiplexing technique as it introduces distortions in nonlinear devices. Various Peak-to-average Power Ratio reduction techniques have been investigated in the literature to improve the performance of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing systems. But, each of them suffers either from high complexity or degraded bit error rate or less spectral efficiency. For reducing Peak-to-average Power Ratio more effectively, a hybrid combination of Partial Transmit Sequence with Selective Mapping is detected to show better performance. In this paper, we have combined Goppa coding technique with this hybrid Selective Mapping and Partial Transmit Sequence for further improving the performance. Along with Peak-to-average Power Ratio reduction capability, the proposed technique also has inherent error control mechanism due to the use of coding. Based on the simulation results, we have concluded that the proposed technique provides good amount of Peak-to-average Power Ratio reduction than conventional techniques. The proposed technique is analyzed for different number of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing symbol candidates for Selective Mapping and different number of block divisions for Partial Transmit Sequence. Further, this technique is simulated for different number of subcarriers and modulation order and the simulation results are compared with each other. The proposed technique also shows better Bit error rate values for high Signal-to-Noise ratio.

Chicken Swarm Optimization for PTS based PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is a well-known PAPR reduction scheme for the OFDM system. One of the major challenge of this scheme is to find an optimal phase vector using exhaustive search over all the allowed phase factor combinations. This leads to increased search complexity which grows exponentially as the number of sub-blocks is increased. In this paper, chicken swarm optimization (CSO) based PTS system is designed that aims to find an optimal solution in less number of average iterations and therefore results in reduced computational complexity of the system. We have proposed two categories of the algorithm: (i) CSO-PTS system without threshold limit on PAPR (ii) CSO-PTS system with threshold limit on PAPR. Both the schemes offer effective trade-offs between the computationalcomplexity and the PAPR reduction capability of the system. Simulation results confirm that our proposed schemes perform well in terms of low computational complexity, lesser number of average iterations and improved PAPR reduction capability of the OFDM signal without any loss in BER performance of the system.

ACE-PI: PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems Using Constellation Extension with Peak Insertion

In this study, a proposal is offered in order to calculate the Bit Error Rate with the Signal to Noise Ratio. Here in this paper, it is illustrated that by comparing this analysis among the other mechanisms effective results can be obtained. By applying the ACE scheme in which the clipping technique block is replaced with Peak Inversion (PI) and butter worth band-pass filter is added after the ACE constraint block for generating less distortion and more smoothing. As, it has been concluded from a survey that among different PAPR reduction techniques, PI found to be an effective technique which can reduce PAPR to an extent by incorporating a relatively high impulse. The MATLAB is used for analyzing the enhanced ACE scheme that offers better results in terms of both PAPR and BER.

New Hybrid Schemes for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) introduced LTE to meet increasingly demands for communication services with high speed and quality. LTE uses OFDM in the form of OFDMA in the downlink and SCFDMA in the uplink combined with MIMO offering high data rate, high capacity and immunity against multipath channels. However, still the high PAPR of the LTE transmitted signal is the major problem affecting overall system performance degradation and power efficiency. A plenty of research has been devoted to reduce the performance degradation due to the PAPR problem inherent to LTE OFDM systems. A portion of the current techniques such companding methods have low-complexity, no constraint on modulation format and subcarrier size, good distortion and spectral properties; however, they have limited PAPR reduction capabilities. This paper proposes seven new hybrid schemes including Zaddoff Chu Matrix Transform (ZCT) precoding and six modern companding methods; Rooting Companding (RCT), New Error Function Companding (NERF), Absolute Exponential Companding (AEXP), Logarithmic Rooting Companding (LogR), Cosine Companding (COS) and Tangent Rooting Companding (TanhR) companding. Furthermore, the seventh proposed hybrid scheme has been added incorporating ZCT precoding with new proposed companding called Advanced AEXP (AAEXP) companding. The developed methods are combining properties of both ZCT & Compandings, and achieving superior PAPR performance and optimal BER. Simulations results illustrate that the new seven proposed hybrid schemes can achieve better PAPR reduction, and BER performance and the best achievement has been achieved by ZCT+AAEXP scheme.

Subblocks interleaving PTS technique with minimum processing time for PAPR reduction in OFDM systems

This study presents subblocks interleaving partial transmit sequence (SBI-PTS) technique having low complexity for reducing the peak-to-average power ratio in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. In this technique, a new subblocks interleaver is proposed, in which each subblock is interleaved with the others. Moreover, a new optimisation scheme is introduced, in which the number of iterations is made to be equal to the number of subblocks only which results in reduced processing time and less computation that leads to reduced complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the new technique can effectively reduce the complexity by up to 99.95% (for subblocks number M = 16, inverse fast Fourier transform size N = 256) compared with the conventional PTS and new existing PTS techniques and yield good bit error rate performance. The other salient feature of this scheme is that it does not require side information and thus it offers increased transmission efficiency.
