The Best Paper Award 2024 Congratulations!

The 15th Best Paper Award 2024 ceremony was held at Gakushikaikan, Tokyo, Japan, on September 20, 2024, attended by the winners and IJAT Editorial Committee members. The Best Paper was severely selected from among 58 papers published in Vol.17 (2023). The Best Paper Award winner received a certificate along with an honorarium of JPY100,000 (nearly US$1,000). We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the winners and sincerely wish them continued success in their future endeavors. Shortcuts to award winning research: analogies from ‘shortcuts to innovation: the use of analogies in knowledge production’

ABSTRACT In this interview, we explore the innovative research that earned Soomi Kim the Best Paper Award at DRUID 2024. As a partner of DRUID, Industry and Innovation presents an exclusive view into the research journey behind Kim’s celebrated work. Her study ‘Shortcuts to Innovation: The Use of Analogies in Knowledge Production’ examines how innovators venture into uncharted territories, using analogies to transfer knowledge from related domains. Using structural biology as the empirical setting, her findings highlight both the advantages and limitations of employing analogy-based technologies, such as machine learning, to speed up discovery. In this conversation, Kim reveals the inspiration, challenges, and breakthroughs that defined her research, providing a unique perspective on the paths leading to her pioneering work. Just as her paper examines how analogical reasoning and its technological automation serve as shortcuts in knowledge production, this conversation offers a unique lens on the pathways that shape groundbreaking research.

Reminiscences on Influential Papers

This issue's contributors all work at the intersection of machine learning and databases. Coincidentally, three of them picked papers that received the VLDB 10-Year Best Paper award, and one of them picked a paper that, in my opinion, should receive the CIDR Test-of-Time award at some point. Their write-ups highlight very well why these four papers still continue to leave a mark on us personally and the real-world data systems. Enjoy reading! An Interview with Tsong Yueh Chen - 2024 SIGSOFT Awardee

Tsong Yueh Chen received the 2024 SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award for contributions to software testing through the invention and development of metamorphic testing. He is currently a Professor of Software Engineering at the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. Previously, he pursued a PhD degree from the University of Melbourne and an MSc degree and DIC from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, U.K. Before joining Swinburne University of Technology, he has lectured at The University of Hong Kong and The University of Melbourne. His research interests fall within the area of software engineering, with a focus on software analysis and testing, debugging, and program repair. He invented adaptive random testing and metamorphic testing. In 2021, the article he co-authored on "Adaptive Random Testing: The ART of test case diversity" (2010) was awarded with the Grand Champion of the Most Influential Paper Award of the "Journal of Systems and Software".

An Interview with Martin Robillard - 2024 SIGSOFT Awardee

Martin Robillard received the 2024 SIGSOFT Influential Educator Award for his significant contributions to hands-on software design education, including a textbook (Introduction to Software Design with Java) and a learner-focused software modeling tool (JetUML). He is currently a Professor in the School of Computer Science at McGill University, Montréal, Canada, he is a Distinguished Member of the ACM and a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. His research interests fall within the area of software engineering, focussing on human-centred software development. He was awarded six ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Awards for his work on recommendation systems, software traceability, and software documentation. Recently, he has been working on software documentation generation, test suite quality, and information privacy.
