The production cross-section of J/ψ pairs in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ \\sqrt{s} $$\\end{document} = 13 TeV is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment. The measurement is performed with both J/ψ mesons in the transverse momentum range 0 < pT< 14 GeV/c and rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-section of this process is measured to be 16.36 ± 0.28 (stat) ± 0.88 (syst) nb. The contributions from single-parton scattering and double-parton scattering are separated based on the dependence of the cross-section on the absolute rapidity difference ∆y between the two J/ψ mesons. The effective cross-section of double-parton scattering is measured to be σeff = 13.1 ± 1.8 (stat) ± 2.3 (syst) mb. The distribution of the azimuthal angle ϕCS of one of the J/ψ mesons in the Collins-Soper frame and the pT-spectrum of the J/ψ pairs are also measured for the study of the gluon transverse-momentum dependent distributions inside protons. The extracted values of ⟨cos 2ϕCS⟩ and ⟨cos 4ϕCS⟩ are consistent with zero, but the presence of azimuthal asymmetry at a few percent level is allowed.

Study of the central exclusive production of π+π−, K+K−, and pp̄ pairs in proton-proton collisions at s = 510 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC

We report on the measurement of the central exclusive production process [Formula: see text] in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. At this energy, the process is dominated by a double Pomeron exchange mechanism. The tracks of the centrally produced system [Formula: see text] were reconstructed in the central detector of STAR, the time projection chamber and the time of flight systems. Particles were identified using the ionization energy loss and the time of flight method. The diffractively scattered protons, moving intact inside the RHIC beam pipe after the collision, were measured in the Roman Pots system allowing full control of the interaction’s kinematics and verification of its exclusivity. Preliminary results on the invariant mass distributions of centrally produced [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] pairs measured within the STAR acceptance are presented.

Search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV collected with a dedicated high-rate data stream

A search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs is performed using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb−1. The data sets used in this search were collected with a dedicated dimuon trigger stream with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by retaining a reduced amount of information, in order to explore otherwise inaccessible phase space at low dimuon mass and nonzero displacement from the primary interaction vertex. No significant excess of events beyond the standard model expectation is found. Upper limits on branching fractions at 95% confidence level are set on a wide range of mass and lifetime hypotheses in beyond the standard model frameworks with the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of long-lived dark photons, or with a long-lived scalar resonance arising from a decay of a b hadron. The limits are the most stringent to date for substantial regions of the parameter space. These results can be also used to constrain models of displaced dimuons that are not explicitly considered in this paper.

Search for long-lived particles decaying to jets with displaced vertices in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

A search is presented for long-lived particles produced in pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC operating at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the period from 2015 through 2018, and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$. This search targets pairs of long-lived particles with mean proper decay lengths between 0.1 and 100 mm, each of which decays into at least two quarks that hadronize to jets, resulting in a final state with two displaced vertices. No significant excess of events with two displaced vertices is observed. In the context of $R$-parity violating supersymmetry models, the pair production of long-lived neutralinos, gluinos, and top squarks is excluded at 95% confidence level for cross sections larger than 0.08 fb, masses between 800 and 3000 GeV, and mean proper decay lengths between 1 and 25 mm.

Search for singly and pair-produced leptoquarks coupling to third-generation fermions in proton-proton collisions at [formula omitted

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. We consider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge −1/3e coupling to a top quark plus a tau lepton (tτ) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino (bν), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling to tν or bτ. These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in the measurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures tτνb and tτν are probed, using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at s=13 TeV and that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98–1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling λ to a lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. These are the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of leptoquarks in this scenario.

Measurements of production cross sections of polarized same-sign W boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at [formula omitted] TeV

The first measurements of production cross sections of polarized same-sign W±W± boson pairs in proton-proton collisions are reported. The measurements are based on a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1. Events are selected by requiring exactly two same-sign leptons, electrons or muons, moderate missing transverse momentum, and two jets with a large rapidity separation and a large dijet mass to enhance the contribution of same-sign W±W± scattering events. An observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit of 1.17 (0.88) fbis set on the production cross section for longitudinally polarized same-sign W±W± boson pairs. The electroweak production of same-sign W±W± boson pairs with at least one of the W bosons longitudinally polarized is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 2.3 (3.1) standard deviations.

Central exclusive production of W boson pairs in pp collisions at the LHC in hadronic and semi-leptonic final states

We present a phenomenology study on central exclusive production of W+W− boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at 14 TeV using the forward proton detectors, such as the ATLAS Forward Proton or the CMS-TOTEM Precision Proton Spectrometer detectors. Final states where at least one of the W bosons decay hadronically in a large-radius jet are considered. The latter extends previous efforts that consider solely leptonic final states. A measurement of exclusive W+W− also allows us to further constrain anomalous quartic gauge boson interactions between photons and W bosons. Expected limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings {a}_{0,C}^W associated to dimension-six effective operators are derived for the hadronic, semi-leptonic, and leptonic final states. It is found that the couplings can be probed down to one-dimensional values of {a}_0^W=3.7times {10}^{-7}{mathrm{GeV}}^{-2} and {a}_C^W=9.2times {10}^{-7}{mathrm{GeV}}^{-7} at 95% CL at an integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 by combining all final states, compared to values of about {a}_0^W=4times {10}^{-6}{mathrm{GeV}}^{-2} and {a}_C^W=1times {10}^{-5}{mathrm{GeV}}^{-2} at 95% CL expected for the leptonic channel alone.

Measurement of the central exclusive production of charged particle pairs in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC

We report on the measurement of the Central Exclusive Production of charged particle pairs h+h− (h = π, K, p) with the STAR detector at RHIC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The charged particle pairs produced in the reaction pp → p′ + h+h− + p′ are reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector and identified using the specific energy loss and the time of flight method, while the forward-scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system. Exclusivity of the event is guaranteed by requiring the transverse momentum balance of all four final-state particles. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of observables related to the central hadronic final state and to the forward-scattered protons. They are measured in a fiducial region corresponding to the acceptance of the STAR detector and determined by the central particles’ transverse momenta and pseudorapidities as well as by the forward-scattered protons’ momenta. This fiducial region roughly corresponds to the square of the four-momentum transfers at the proton vertices in the range 0.04 GeV2< −t1, −t2< 0.2 GeV2, invariant masses of the charged particle pairs up to a few GeV and pseudorapidities of the centrally-produced hadrons in the range |η| < 0.7. The measured cross sections are compared to phenomenological predictions based on the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) model. Structures observed in the mass spectra of π+π− and K+K− pairs are consistent with the DPE model, while angular distributions of pions suggest a dominant spin-0 contribution to π+π− production. For π+π− production, the fiducial cross section is extrapolated to the Lorentz-invariant region, which allows decomposition of the invariant mass spectrum into continuum and resonant contributions. The extrapolated cross section is well described by the continuum production and at least three resonances, the f0(980), f2(1270) and f0(1500), with a possible small contribution from the f0(1370). Fits to the extrapolated differential cross section as a function of t1 and t2 enable extraction of the exponential slope parameters in several bins of the invariant mass of π+π− pairs. These parameters are sensitive to the size of the interaction region.

Search for heavy Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A search is presented for additional scalar (H) or pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set analyzed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Final states with one or two charged leptons are considered. The invariant mass of the reconstructed top quark pair system and variables that are sensitive to the spin of the particles decaying into the top quark pair are used to search for signatures of the H or A bosons. The interference with the standard model top quark pair background is taken into account. A moderate signal-like deviation compatible with an A boson with a mass of 400 GeV is observed with a global significance of 1.9 standard deviations. New stringent constraints are reported on the strength of the coupling of the hypothetical bosons to the top quark, with the mass of the bosons ranging from 400 to 750 GeV and their total relative width from 0.5 to 25%. The results of the search are also interpreted in a minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario. Values of mA from 400 to 700 GeV are probed, and a region with values of tan β below 1.0 to 1.5, depending on mA, is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Production of Heavy Particle Pairs via Photon–Photon Processes at the LHC

We discuss production of $W^+ W^-$ pairs and $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions induced by two-photon fusion including transverse momenta of incoming photons. The unintegrated inelastic fluxes (related to proton dissociation) of photons are calculated based on modern parametrizations of deep inelastic structure functions in a broad range of $x$ and $Q^2$. We focus on processes with single and double proton dissociation. Highly excited remnant systems hadronise producing particles that can be vetoed in the calorimeter. We calculate associated gap survival factors. The gap survival factors depend on the process, mass of the remnant system and collision energy. The rapidity gap survival factor due to remnant fragmentation for double dissociative (DD) collisions is smaller than that for single dissociative (SD) process. We observe approximate factorisation: $S_{R,DD} \approx S_{R,SD}^2$ when imposing rapidity veto. For the $W^+W^-$ final state, the remnant fragmentation leads to a taming of the cross section when the rapidity gap requirement is imposed. Also for $t \bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs such a condition reverses the hierarchy observed for the case when such condition is taken into account. Our results imply that for the production of such heavy objects as $t$ quark and $\bar t$ antiquark the virtuality of the photons attached to the dissociative system are very large ($Q^2 <$ 10$^{4}$ GeV$^2$). A similar effect is observed for the $W^+ W^-$ system.

Searching for Odderon in Exclusive Reactions

We discuss the possibility to use the pp → ppфф process in identifying the odderon exchange. So far, there is no unambiguous experimental evidence for the odderon, the charge conjugation C = −1 counterpart of the C = +1 pomeron. Last year, the results of the TOTEM collaboration suggest that the odderon exchange can be responsible for a disagreement of theoretical calculations and the TOTEM data for the elastic proton-proton scattering. Here, we present recent studies for the central exclusive production (CEP) of фф pairs in proton-proton collisions. We consider the pomeron-pomeron fusion to фф (PP → фф) through the continuum processes, due to the ^t- and ^u-channel reggeized ф-meson, photon, and odderon exchanges, as well as through the s-channel resonance process (PP → f2(2340) → фф). This f2 state is a candidate for a tensor glueball. The amplitudes for the processes are formulated within the tensor-pomeron and vector-odderon approach. Some model parameters are determined from the comparison to the WA102 experimental data. The odderon exchange is not excluded by the WA102 data for high фф invariant masses. The measurement of large Mфф or Ydiff events at the LHC would therefore suggest the presence of the odderon exchange. The process is advantageous, as here the odderon does not couple to protons.

Central Exclusive Production at LHCb

The LHCb collaboration has measured central exclusive production of J/ф, ф(2S), and ϒ mesons as well as J/фJ/ф, J/фф(2S), ф(2S)ф(2S), and xcxc meson pairs in proton-proton collisions. The analyses of ϒ and charmonium pairs are performed at the centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, and those of J/ф and ф(2S) are done at 7 TeV and 13 TeV. The analysis at 13 TeV involves the use of new shower counters. These allow a reduction in the background by vetoing events with activity in an extended region in rapidity. The measurements of central exclusive production at LHCb are sensitive to gluon distributions for Bjorken-x values down to 2×10−6 (at 13 TeV). An overview of the LHCb results is presented and compared to existing measurements of other experiments and theoretical calculations.

Associated production of χc pairs with a gluon in the collinear-factorization approach

We calculate cross section for production of $\chi_c$ pairs in proton-proton collisions. The cross section for the $g g \to \chi_{c J_1} \chi_{c J_2}$ is considerably smaller (especially for $\chi_{c 1} \chi_{c 1}$ final state) than that obtained recently in the $k_T$-factorization approach. We calculate therefore next-to-leading order contributions with $\chi_c$ pair and one extra associated (mini-)jet. We find these contributions to be much larger than those for the $2 \to 2$ contribution. Especially the emission of a leading gluon (carrying a large momentum fraction of one of the incoming gluons) are important. These emissions in the $k_T$-factorization approach are absorbed into the initial state unintegrated gluon distributions. A smaller contribution to the cross section comes from the production of central gluons emitted with rapidities between the $\chi_c$-mesons. They do lead, however, to an enhancement of the $\chi_c$-pair production at large rapidity distance between the mesons. Our present study explains the size of the cross section for the $\chi_c$ pair production obtained previously in the $k_T$-factorization approach. Several differential distributions are presented.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a single top quark or a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=13 TeV

A search for dark matter produced in association with top quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Whereas previous searches for neutral scalar or pseudoscalar mediators considered dark matter production in association with a top quark pair only, this analysis also includes production modes with a single top quark. The results are derived from the combination of multiple selection categories that are defined to target either the single top quark or the top quark pair signature. No significant deviations with respect to the standard model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified model in which a scalar or pseudoscalar mediator particle couples to a top quark and subsequently decays into dark matter particles. Scalar and pseudoscalar mediator particles with masses below 290 and 300 GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV and mediator couplings to fermions and dark matter particles equal to unity.

Production of toverline{t} pairs via \u03b3\u03b3 fusion with photon transverse momenta and proton dissociation

We discuss the production of toverline{t} quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions via the γγ fusion mechanism. We include topologies in which both protons stay intact or one or even both of them undergo dissociation. The calculations are performed within the kT-factorisation approach, including transverse momenta of intermediate photons. Photon fluxes associated with inelastic (dissociative) processes are calculated based on modern parameterisations of proton structure functions. We find an integrated cross section of about 2.36 fb at sqrt{s}=13 TeV for all contributions (without requirement of rapidity gap). The cross section for the fully elastic process is the smallest. Inelastic contributions are significantly reduced when a veto on outgoing jets is imposed. We present several differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momenta of single t or overline{t} quarks/antiquarks as well as distributions in invariant mass of both the toverline{t} and masses of dissociated systems. A few two-dimensional distributions are presented in addition.

Search for Dark Matter Particles Produced in Association with a Top Quark Pair at sqrt[s]=13 TeV.

A search is performed for dark matter particles produced in association with a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1} recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. No significant excess over the standard model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted using simplified models of dark matter production via spin-0 mediators that couple to dark matter particles and to standard model quarks, providing constraints on the coupling strength between the mediator and the quarks. These are the most stringent collider limits to date for scalar mediators, and the most stringent for pseudoscalar mediators at low masses.

Tensor pomeron, vector odderon and diffractive production of meson and baryon pairs in proton-proton collisions

We review some selected results of the tensor-pomeron and vectorodderon model of soft high-energy proton-proton scattering and central exclusive production of meson and baryon pairs in proton-proton collisions. We discuss the theoretical aspects of this approach and consider the phenomenological implications in a variety of processes at high energies, comparing to existing experimental data. We consider the diffractive dipion and dikaon production including the continuum and the dominant scalar and tensor resonance contributions as well as the photoproduction processes. The theoretical results are compared with existing CDF experimental data and predictions for planned or current LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb are presented.

Double-parton Scattering Effects in Heavy Meson Production

We present results of our theoretical investigation of double-parton scattering (DPS) effects in production of heavy flavour mesons (charm and bottom). We discuss production of charm-bottom and bottom-bottom meson-meson pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The calculation of DPS mechanism is performed within factorized ansatz where each parton scattering is calculated in the framework of the $k_T$-factorization. The hadronization is done with the help of independent parton fragmentation picture. For completeness we compare results for double- and single-parton scattering (SPS). As in the case of double charm production also here the DPS dominates over the SPS, especially for small transverse momenta. We present several distributions and integrated cross sections with realistic cuts for simultaneous production of $D^0 B^+$ and $B^+ B^+$, suggesting future experimental studies at the LHCb detector.

Towards a complete study of central exclusive production of K+K− pairs in proton-proton collisions within the tensor Pomeron approach

We present a study of the central exclusive production of the $K^{+} K^{-}$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at high energies. We consider diffractive mechanisms including the $K^{+} K^{-}$ continuum, the dominant scalar $f_{0}(980)$, $f_{0}(1500)$, $f_{0}(1710)$ and tensor $f_{2}(1270)$, $f'_{2}(1525)$ resonances decaying into the $K^{+} K^{-}$ pairs. We include also photoproduction mechanisms for the non-resonant (Drell-S\"{o}ding) and the $\phi(1020)$ resonance contributions. The theoretical results are calculated within the tensor-pomeron approach including both pomeron and reggeon exchanges. Predictions for planned or current experiments at RHIC and LHC are presented. We discuss the influence of the experimental cuts on the integrated cross section and on various differential distributions for outgoing particles. The distributions in two-kaon invariant mass, in a special `glueball filter variable', as well as examples of angular distributions in the $K^{+}K^{-}$ rest frame are presented. We compare the $\phi(1020)$ and continuum photoproduction contributions to the $f_{0}(980)$ and continuum diffractive contributions and discuss whether the $\phi(1020)$ resonance could be extracted experimentally. For the determination of some model parameters we also include a discussion of $K$-nucleon scattering, in particular total cross sections, and of $\phi(1020)$ photoproduction.

Measurement of differential cross sections for the production of top quark pairs and of additional jets in lepton+jets events from pp collisions at s=13 TeV

Differential and double-differential cross sections for the production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV are measured as a function of kinematic variables of the top quarks and the top quark-antiquark ($\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$) system. In addition, kinematic variables and multiplicities of jets associated with the $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ production are measured. This analysis is based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.8 fb$^{-1}$. The measurements are performed in the lepton+jets decay channels with a single muon or electron and jets in the final state. The differential cross sections are presented at the particle level, within a phase space close to the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level in the full phase space. The results are compared to several standard model predictions that use different methods and approximations. The kinematic variables of the top quarks and the $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ system are reasonably described in general, though none predict all the measured distributions. In particular, the transverse momentum distribution of the top quarks is more steeply falling than predicted. The kinematic distributions and multiplicities of jets are adequately modeled by certain combinations of next-to-leading-order calculations and parton shower models.
