Ergonomic design of paddy irrigation covers to increase agricultural productivity

The use of conventional galengan in rice fields in Rumpa'e hamlet, Telle Village, Ajangale District. Bone is still made from soil, banana trees and bamboo as raw materials for making galengan. This is easy for damage to occur because the soil is not dense and is not effective in making galengan, thus hampering the irrigation process system between rice fields. Therefore, the aim of this research is to design a rice irrigation cover design that is not easily damaged and makes the irrigation process system between rice fields easier. This research uses the method QFD (Quality Function Deployment)So there are 9 statements produced based on the results of interviews with farmers, these 9 statements have been classified based on the interests and needs of farmers. Based on the results of this research, it is possible to design a rice irrigation cover design based on the results of QFD data processing that is not easily damaged using various types of raw materials.(Stainless steel) and is efficient in the manufacturing process, making it easier for farmers in the process of using it because it uses a sliding system.

Increased anaerobic conditions promote the denitrifying nitrogen removal potential and limit anammox substrate acquisition within paddy irrigation and drainage units

Microbial nitrogen (N) removal is crucial for purifying surface water quality in paddy irrigation and drainage units (IDUs). However, the spatiotemporal microbial N removal potential characteristics within these IDUs and the effects of changing anaerobic conditions on this potential remain insufficiently studied. In this study, we investigated the microbial N removal potential of conventional rice-wheat rotation and anaerobically enhanced rice-crayfish rotation IDUs using field measurements, isotope tracing techniques, and quantitative PCR. Our findings reveal that paddy fields were identified as hotspots for anammox activity, contributing to 76.0 %–97.4 % of the total anammox N removal potential in the IDU, while denitrification processes in ditches accounted for 43.5 %–77.4 % of the IDU's denitrification potential. During the rice transplanting period, the anammox N removal potential peaked, representing 35.8 % and 71.8 % of the total anammox N removal potential of the paddy fields in rice-wheat and rice-crayfish IDUs, respectively. An increase in anaerobic conditions diminished the anammox N removal potential while amplifying denitrification capabilities. The N removal potential in paddy fields decreased with increasing depth, contrasting with the relative stability in ditches. Spatiotemporal fluctuations in N removal potentials within these units are influenced by Fe2+ concentration, carbon and N content, WFPS, and pH levels. This study provides a scientific basis for improving nitrogen removal and water quality treatment in IDUs.

Assessment of Increasing Rice Plant Index 400 with the Application of Environmentally Friendly Rice Cultivation Technology in Irrigation Land, Banjar City, West Java

Abstract Achieving rice self-sufficiency is the main target of the Ministry of Agriculture in order to meet the demand for rice consumption which continues to increase every year. Various efforts have been made, including through a program to increase the Rice Planting Index (PI) from 300 to 400 or from three times to four times in one year. The research aim was to determine the technical and financial feasibility of increasing PI Paddy 400 by applying Environmentally Friendly Rice Cultivation (EFRC) technology to irrigated paddy fields. The study was carried out in an irrigated paddy field in Pataruman Village, Pataruman District, Banjar City, West Java Province, Indonesia. The study used an adaptive research approach on 2.0 ha of farmers’ land involving 12 implementing farmers (cooperators). The assessment will be carried out in 2021, starting from the 2nd Planting Season (PS) to the 4th PS, while the 1st PS activities have been carried out by farmers. The technology adapted is the early maturing New Superior Varieties (NSV) Cakrabuana and M70D as well as setting cropping patterns and implementing EFRC technology packages. The results of the study show that the use of NSV Cakrabuana and M70D can speed up harvest time, so that they can harvest four times in one year. EFRC technology can increase rice production for one year by 24.24% from 16.5 to 20.5 tons of dry harvested grain (DHG). Farmers are still hesitant to develop PI 400 rice technology even though it is financially profitable and feasible with an RC Ratio of 1.84.

Analysis of The Implementation of Sustainable Food Agricultural Land Protection Policy in Bandung District: A Case Study of Rice Field Conversion in Cikancung District

The policy of sustainable protection of agricultural land becomes crucial in addressing land degradation and land use conversion, especially from agriculture to non-agriculture, alongside the increasing demand for land due to population growth and economic development, which can lead to negative impacts such as a decrease in food security, marginalization of agricultural land, and an increase in flood risks. This research aims to analyze the implementation of the Sustainable Protection of Food Agricultural Land Policy, understand the rate of paddy field conversion, and identify trends in land conversion after the policy's enforcement. This study employs a qualitative approach, with data obtained through interviews, observations, and documentary studies. The research is conducted in Bandung Regency, with samples taken from Cikancung Sub-district, Bandung Regency, West Java Province. Informants involved in this research are selected through judgment sampling and are individuals related to the sustainable protection of agricultural land policy and relevant stakeholders. Data analysis is conducted using qualitative and spatial analysis. The research findings indicate that the implementation of sustainable agricultural land protection policy in Bandung Regency is still in the socialization and planning stages. Based on spatial analysis, the implementation of the policy in Cikancung Sub-district has led to the conversion of paddy fields, particularly in non-technical irrigation paddy fields, predominantly converted into industrial land. This conversion covers a total area of 20.3 hectares, with the most significant change occurring in non-technical irrigation paddy fields converted into industries, covering an area of 13.7 hectares. Based on internal, external, and policy analysis, it can be concluded that the policy implementation in Cikancung Sub-district has not been optimal in addressing the conversion of paddy fields.

Impact of biochar on the antibiotic resistome and associated microbial functions in rhizosphere and bulk soil in water-saving and flooding irrigated paddy fields

The addition of biochar in paddies under the condition of water-saving irrigation can simultaneously achieve soil improvement and water conservation, but little is known about the role of these two regulations in mediating the fate of antibiotic resistome in paddy soils. Here, metagenomic analysis was conducted to investigate the effects and intrinsic mechanisms of biochar application and irrigation patterns on propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in paddy soils. The addition of biochar in paddy soil resulted in a reduction of approximately 1.32%–8.01% in the total absolute abundance of ARGs and 0.60%–22.09% in the numbers of ARG subtype. Compared with flooding irrigation, the numbers of detected ARG subtype were reduced by 1.60%–22.90%, but the total absolute abundance of ARGs increased by 0.06%–5.79% in water-saving irrigation paddy soils. Moreover, the combined treatments of flooding irrigation and biochar could significantly reduce the abundance of ARGs in paddy soils. The incremental antibiotic resistance in soil induced by water-saving irrigation was likewise mitigated by the addition of biochar. Correlation analyses indicated that, the differences in soil physicochemical properties under biochar addition or irrigation treatments contributed to the corresponding changes in the abundance of ARGs. Moreover, the variations of microbial community diversity, multidrug efflux abundance and transport system-related genes in paddy soil were also important for mediating the corresponding differences in the abundance of ARGs under the conditions of biochar addition or irrigation treatments. The findings of this study demonstrated the effectiveness of biochar application in mitigating antibiotic resistance in paddy soils. However, it also highlighted a potential concern relating to the elevated antibiotic resistance associated with water-saving irrigation in paddy fields. Consequently, these results contribute to a deeper comprehension of the environmental risks posed by ARGs in paddy soils.

Agronomic performance, yield and seed production of some new superior varieties using integrated crop management approach in tabanan district, Bali province

One of the obstacles to increasing rice productivity in paddy fields in Tabanan district is the availability of adaptive new superior varieties (NSV) with high productivity. The aim of the study was to determine the agronomic performance, yield components and seed production of three NSV lowland rice which have the potential to be developed in irrigated paddy fields at Subak Guama Tabanan districs, in collaboration with AIAT Bali as NSV seed providers. The study was conducted from February to June 2021. The study used a randomized block design (RBD) with 1 factor 4 treatments including Ciherang as a comparison and each treatment was repeated 6 times. The collected data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), then the treatment was further tested using the Tukey test at 95%. The results of the study showed that the application with a 2:1 legowo cropping system can increase the performance and components of crop yields. The use of NSV and the 2:1 legowo planting method can increase productivity by an average of 1.24 tonnes/ha of harvested dry grain (HDG) or an increase of 19.36% tonnes/ha of HDG. The application of ICM using NSV, the legowo 2:1 planting method is one way to increase rice production.

Utilization of semi-intensive irrigated paddy fields and increasing farmers income on cropping patterns in support of ip400 technology in Central Sulawesi

Based on the agro-ecosystem and suitability of paddy fields, rice fields have high potential and opportunities to be developed in Central Sulawesi Province, but sometimes the yield is still below the average production. This research has been conducted from May 2021 to June 2022. The research location is Kaleke Village, West Dolo District, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. This study aims to increase the Crop Index and harvested area to increase the production and income of farmers as well as the performance of farmer groups. Research on cropping patterns and alternation of varieties with Rice – Corn – Corn – Rice Cropping Patterns. The treatment area of 1 ha with the planting system used is: for each commodity using components, PTT Paddy rice PTT corn. While the feasibility of farming with an income analysis approach with an R/C ratio. The results showed that: (a) The design of agricultural technology innovations to increase the cropping index of rice crops with MT I results showed the production component of the Inpari 33 variety of rice tiles. R/C Ratio 2.11, on MT. II Jakarin variety corn with a yield of 5.0 tons/ha. R/C Ratio: 2.04, maize variety Sukmaraga MT.III average yield 6.3 tons with R/C Ratio: 2.01 and MT. IV rice variety Inpari 36 with a yield of 5 tons/ha GKP R/C Ratio: 1.59(c) Increasing the Crop Index and harvested area can increase farmers’ income and the performance of farmer groups on technology supporting IP400.

Insights into antibiotic resistance-related changes in microbial communities, resistome and mobilome in paddy irrigated with reclaimed wastewater

Reclaimed wastewater (reclaimed wastewater, RWW) from municipal wastewater treatment plants for paddy irrigation is a well-established practice to alleviate water scarcity. However, the reuse may result in the persistent exposure of the paddy to residual antibiotics in RWW. Continuous presence of even low-level antibiotics can exert selective pressure on microbiota, resulting in the proliferation and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in paddy. In this study, metagenomic analysis was applied to firstly deciphered the effects of residual antibiotics on microbiome and resistome in constructed mesocosm-scale paddy soils. The diversity and abundance of ARG have remarkably risen with the increasing antibiotic concentration in RWW. Network analysis revealed that 28 genera belonging to six phyla were considered as the potential ARG hosts, and their abundances were enhanced with increasing antibiotic concentrations. A partial least-squares path model indicated that the microbial community was the principal direct driver of the ARG abundance and the resistome alteration in paddy soil under long-term RWW irrigation. Microbes may acquire ARGs via horizontal gene transfer. IntI1 could play an essential role in the propagation and spread of ARGs. Functional analysis suggested that enhanced SOS response and T4SSs (Type IV secretion systems) modules could stimulate horizontal transfer potential and promote the ARG abundance. The obtained results provide a scientific decision for assessing the ecological risk of RWW application.

Response of heavy-metal and antibiotic resistance genes and their related microbe in rice paddy irrigated with treated municipal wastewaters

Paddy irrigation with secondary effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs) is a well-established practice to alleviate water scarcity. However, the reuse might lead to more complicated contamination caused by interactions between residual antibiotics in effluents and heavy metals in paddy soil. To date, no information is available for the potential effects of dual stress of heavy metals and antibiotics on heavy-metal resistance genes (MRGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Here, this study investigated the response of heavy metal and antibiotic resistance genes, and related microorganisms to the dual threat of antibiotics and heavy metals under the long-term MWTP effluent irrigation for rice paddy using metagenome. The results showed that there was not a negative effect on rice consumption if MWTP effluent was used to irrigate rice for a long time. The concentration of antibiotics could reshape the ARGs and MRG profiles in rice paddy soil. The findings revealed the co-occurrence of ARGs and MRGs in rice paddy soils, thus highlighting the need for simultaneous elimination of antibiotics and heavy metals to effectively reduce ARGs and MRGs. Acn and sul1 genes encoding Iron and sulfonamides resistance mechanisms are the most abundant MRG and ARG, respectively. Network analysis revealed the possibility that IntI1 plays a role in the co-transmission of MRG and ARG to host microbes, and that Proteobacteria are the most dominant hosts for MRG, ARG, and integrons. The presence of antibiotics in irrigated MWTP effluents has been found to stimulate the proliferation of heavy metal and antibiotic resistances by altering soil microbial communities. This study will enhance our comprehension of the co-selection between ARGs and MRGs, as well as reveal the concealed environmental impacts of combined pollution. The obtained results have important implications for food safety and human health in rice.

The participation of farmers who own irrigated paddy fields has an effect on the availability of water resources because the participation of farmers in managing irrigation water resources can help the availability of water in paddy fields even though the availability of water is limited. One of the factors causing the non-optimal distribution of water and the long distance between the water source and the irrigated paddy fields causes an uneven distribution of water in the paddy fields so that some farmers use water pumps to irrigate the paddy fields. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of participation of paddy farmers. irrigation on the availability of water resources in Blang Bintang District, Aceh Besar District. The data analysis model used is Likert scale analysis. The results showed that the average level of participation of irrigated rice farmers on the availability of water resources was in the medium category or 63.82%. This shows that involvement in each activity is only when entering the rice planting season. Based on the partial test (t test) shows that the variables of land area (X1), income (X2), motivation (X3) and experience (X4) partially have no significant effect on the participation of irrigated rice farmers in the availability of water resources in Blang Bintang District, Aceh BesarRegency

Climate mitigation potential of sustainable biochar production in China

While feeding 20% of global population, China's agriculture is a large greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter, posing a major challenge to the country's carbon neutrality target. However, the pathways of agriculture towards carbon neutrality remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conduct a comprehensive life-cycle assessment and show that valorization of sustainable biomass wastes (crop residues, forest residues, livestock manure, food waste, and sewage sludge) into biochar can contribute importantly towards agricultural carbon neutrality in China. The maximum potential of biochar production from these waste resources in 2018 is 145 Mt yr−1 with a corresponding GHG mitigation potential of 455.7 (405.5–572.4) Mt CO2-eq yr−1. This can fully offset the total CH4 and N2O emissions from China's croplands (∼400 Mt CO2-eq yr−1), which are difficult to be entirely eliminated due to rice paddy irrigation and intensive use of fertilizers. Distribution of biomass waste varies across regions, and at the national level , crop residues (48.8%) and livestock manure (25.4%) and food waste (15.6%) are the main sources of biochar feedstocks and should be prioritized in biochar development. Forest residues have a marginal contribution due to competing uses from other sectors, and sewage sludge derived biochar is a net source of GHG emissions due to the large energy consumption required for sludge drying. The total GHG mitigation potential of biochar is greatly affected by pyrolysis temperature and the highest mitigation effect is observed under 300–500 °C. These results underscore the benefit of sustainable biochar production to agricultural carbon neutrality, and to maximize the climate benefit requires differential policies and pyrolysis technologies tailored to regional availability of biomass resources.

River water influenced by shale gas wastewater discharge for paddy irrigation has limited effects on soil properties and microbial communities

The processes of hydraulic fracturing to extract shale gas generate a large amount of wastewater, and the potential impacts of wastewater discharge after treatment are concerning. In this field study, we investigated the effects of the irrigation of paddy fields for 2 consecutive years by river water that has been influenced by shale gas wastewater discharge on soil physicochemical properties, microbial community structure and function, and rice grain quality. The results showed that conductivity, chloride and sulfate ions in paddy soils downstream of the outfall showed an accumulative trend after two years of irrigation, but these changes occurred on a small scale (<500 m). Two-year irrigation did not cause the accumulation of trace metals (barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, strontium, zinc, nickel, and uranium) in soil and rice grains. Among all soil parameters, the accumulation of chloride ions was the most pronounced, with concentrations in the paddy soil at the discharge site 13.3 times higher than at the upstream control site. The use of influenced river water for paddy irrigation positively increased the soil microbial diversity, but these changes occurred after two years of irrigation and did not occur after one year of irrigation. Overall, the use of river water affected by shale gas wastewater discharge for agricultural irrigation has limited effects on agroecosystems over a short period. Nevertheless, the possible negative effects of contaminant accumulation in soil and rice caused by longer-term irrigation should be seriously considered.

Fragmentation of Irrigated and Rainfed Paddy Field in Cianjur Regency, West Java

Paddy field is the agriculture land that produces rice and needs to be protected because of the threat of high conversion. In the period 2003-2013, paddy field in West Java Province has decreased by 9098 ha, while all of Indonesia increased by 235 538 ha (2014) because of the new paddy field outside Java. In the period January-September 2022 national production reached 45.43 millian ton. Conversion of paddy field into built up area, especially in Java will affect to fragmentation level of paddy field themsefves. The purpose of this research is to analyze the fragmentation of irrigated and rainfed paddy field in Cianjur Regency. Fragmentation index that used in this research are Class Area (CA), Number of Patch (NumP), Mean Patch Size (MPS), Patch Size Standard Deviation (PSSD), Mean Sharp Index (MSI). The results showed that rainfed paddy field are more fragmented than irrigated paddy field, which is indicated by greater NumP values. Clutering of districts based on irrigated and rainfed paddy fields fragmentation index, each of which produces 3 groups . The high group has an increasingly fragmented tendency that identified by the high value of area (CA) and the number of patchs (NumP), while the other parameters are less able to characterize fragmentation difference. The fragmentation of irrigated and rainfed paddy fields in northern Cianjur Regency is influenced by the land conversion while in central and southern due to sloping topography.

Land Use Change Threat to Paddy Cultivation Sustainability on the Irrigated Rice Fields in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia

Unpredictable conditions of rice cultivation on fragile peatlands in Indonesia due to land-use changes would be an obstacle to agricultural food production and food security. This study aimed to determine the changes in land usage in Bengkulu, from prospective rice fields to oil palm plantations. The study was conducted from June to October 2020 at Air Manjuto irrigation paddy fields in Mukomuko Regency, Bengkulu Province. The analysis used satellite imagery with appropriate resolutions and multitemporal time from the United States Geological Survey's Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper + (ETM+), and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) collected from the years of 2000, 2008, and 2019. (USGS). The landscapes covering the Air Manjuto area were mostly marginal swampy peaty soils with ordo of Inceptisols, Histosols, and Entisols, which favor intensive rice cultivation. Oil palm plantation covers about 80% of the area, and in the last ten years, the cultivation by small-scale farmers increased sharply, about 8,219 ha or 68% from the previous decade, and no bush and bare land. In contrast, rice fields were an extraordinary loss of 6,819 ha or about 74% in the last decade, from 9,187 ha in 2008 to 2,308 ha in 2019. The loss of a huge area for rice cultivation at the Air Manjuto irrigation area threatens production in Bengkulu. The loss should be reversed through supporting infrastructure facilities and incentives, agrochemical subsidies, and agricultural insurances, and no more rice fields should be converted.

Greenhouse gas emissions in irrigated paddy rice as influenced by crop management practices and nitrogen fertilization rates in eastern Tanzania

In rice production greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reduction is an important task for many countries, Tanzania included. Of global agricultural GHG emitted from rice fields, about 30 and 11% are represented by CH4 and N2O, respectively. For successful climate smart rice cultivation, rice management practices, including nitrogen fertilization are two key crucial components that need evaluation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the crop management practices and N fertilization on yield and greenhouse gases emission in paddy rice production, Experiments were designed in split-plot randomized complete block and replicated three times. Two rice management practices namely conventional practice (CP) and system of rice intensification (SRI) and six rates of nitrogen fertilizer (absolute control, 0, 60, 90,120 and 150 kg N ha−1) were applied in two consecutive seasons. The Source-selective and Emission-adjusted GHG CalculaTOR for Cropland (SECTOR) was used to calculate the GHG emission. Methane emission was in the range of 88.7–220.6 kg ha−1season−1, where higher emission was recorded in CP treatments (ABC, CP 0 and CP 120N) compared to SRI treatments. SRI reduced methane and carbon dioxide emission by 59.8% and 20.1% over CP, respectively. Seasonal nitrous oxide emissions was in the range of no detected amount to 0.0002 kgN2O ha−1 where SRI treatments recorded up to 0.0002 kgN2O ha−1 emissions while in CP treatment no amount of N2O was detected. The interaction of system of rice intensification and 90 kg N ha−1 (SRI90N) treatment recorded higher grains yield (8.1, 7.7 t ha−1) with low seasonal global warming potential (GWP) (3,478 and 3,517 kg CO2e ha−1) and low greenhouse gas intensity (0.42, 0.45 kg CO2e per kg paddy) compared to other treatments in wet and dry season, respectively. Therefore, SRI with 90 kg N was the treatment with mitigation potential and reduced GWP without compromising rice yield.

Soil nitrogen functional transformation microbial genes response to biochar application in different irrigation paddy field in southern China.

Growing evidence points to the controlled irrigation (CI) and biochar application (BA) having agricultural economic value and ecological benefits, but their synergistic effect and microbial mechanism of nitrogen conversion remain unknown in paddy fields. The effects of different BA (0, 20, 40 t/hm2) on the soil nitrogen functional transformation microbial genes (nifH, AOA-amoA, AOB-amoA) in different irrigation (CI, flooding irrigation) were clarified. After one seasonal growth of paddy, the correlation between the abundance of functional genes OUT and soil nitrogen transformation environment factors during the typical growth period was analyzed. High-throughput sequencing results illustrated that the application of CC (40 t/hm2 biochar) increased the nifH genes bacterial community abundance; the abundance of dominant microorganism increased by 79.68~86.19%. Because biochar can potentially control the rates of N cycling in soil systems by adsorbing ammonia and increasing NH4+ storage, it increased soil NH4+-N and NO3--N content by 60.77% and 26.14%, improving microbial nitrogen fixation. Rare species Nitrosopumilus, Nitrosococcus, and Methylocystis appeared in biochar treatments group, which increased the diversity of microbial in paddy. The combined use of CI and BA affected soil inorganic nitrogen content, temperature (T), pH, Eh, etc., which affected urease, urea hydrolysis, and nitrogen functional transformation microorganism genes. Correlation analysis shows that soil NH4+-N, T, and Eh, respectively, are significant factors for the formation of nifH, AOA-amoA, and AOB-amoA soil bacterial communities, respectively. This study suggests that to maintain the biodiversity of soil and realize the sustainable development of rice cultivation, CI is of great importance in combination with BA.

Comparison of three land suitability evaluation depth scenarios for irrigated paddy fields (case study: North of Iran)

ABSTRACT Improving agricultural sustainability and increasing production are the most important goals for the near future especially for developing countries. Accordingly, in these countries, a land suitability evaluation (LSE) study based on the FAO framework is recommended, whereas the high cost caused a dramatic reduction in LSE studies particularly in irrigated paddy fields. Therefore, in this study two depth scenarios (scenario2: 0–50cm and scenario3: 0–25cm) were compared to the FAO framework depth scenario (scenario1: 0–100cm) to investigate the ability of the two new scenarios in qualitative and quantitative LSE classification for irrigated paddy fields. The study was conducted in Guilan province, Iran. Seventy-seven soil profiles were described, soil samples from genetic layers and 30 yield samples were collected. The results showed that, in both qualitative and quantitative LSE, the calculated values for both new scenarios were significantly correlated to the values in scenario1. Moreover, the coefficient of determination, the paired t-test, and the kappa coefficient showed very strong agreements between the two proposed scenarios and senario1. Overlaying three scenarios maps also didn’t reveal notable differences. Although the use of scenario1 is preferred, scenario2 due to very close results to scenario1 and being time-and-cost-saving, will be recommended.

Non-Linear Autoregressive Dissolved Oxygen Prediction Model for Paddy Irrigation Channel

This study has proposed a non-linear autoregressive model to predict one-day ahead dissolved oxygen in paddy field irrigation channel. A 32-day data is obtained from Kampung Padang To’ La in Pasir Mas, Kelantan using off-the shelf water quality parameter sensors. Analysis has revealed no correlation between dissolved oxygen with pH and electrical conductivity. A non-linear autoregressive model is then developed using the dissolved oxygen measurements and artificial neural network. A prediction model developed using Levenberg- Marquardt algorithm yielded the best results with overall regression of 0.9253. The model has also passed all correlation tests and can therefore, be accepted.
