Structure, Regulation, and Significance of Cyanobacterial and Chloroplast Adenosine Triphosphate Synthase in the Adaptability of Oxygenic Photosynthetic Organisms.

In cyanobacteria and chloroplasts (in algae and plants), ATP synthase plays a pivotal role as a photosynthetic membrane complex responsible for producing ATP from adenosine diphosphate and inorganic phosphate, utilizing a proton motive force gradient induced by photosynthesis. These two ATP synthases exhibit similarities in gene organization, amino acid sequences of subunits, structure, and functional mechanisms, suggesting that cyanobacterial ATP synthase is probably the evolutionary precursor to chloroplast ATP synthase. In this review, we explore the precise synthesis and assembly of ATP synthase subunits to address the uneven stoichiometry within the complex during transcription, translation, and assembly processes. We also compare the regulatory strategies governing ATP synthase activity to meet varying energy demands in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts amid fluctuating natural environments. Furthermore, we delve into the role of ATP synthase in stress tolerance and photosynthetic carbon fixation efficiency in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms (OPsOs), along with the current researches on modifying ATP synthase to enhance carbon fixation efficiency under stress conditions. This review aims to offer theoretical insights and serve as a reference for understanding the functional mechanisms of ATP synthase, sparking innovative ideas for enhancing photosynthetic carbon fixation efficiency by utilizing ATP synthase as an effective module in OPsOs.

Uncovering the photosystem I assembly pathway in land plants.

Photosystem I (PSI) is one of two large pigment-protein complexes responsible for converting solar energy into chemical energy in all oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. The PSI supercomplex consists of the PSI core complex and peripheral light-harvesting complex I (LHCI) in eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms. However, how the PSI complex assembles in land plants is unknown. Here we describe PHOTOSYSTEM I BIOGENESIS FACTOR 8 (PBF8), a thylakoid-anchored protein in Arabidopsis thaliana that is required for PSI assembly. PBF8 regulates two key consecutive steps in this process, the building of two assembly intermediates comprising eight or nine subunits, by interacting with PSI core subunits. We identified putative PBF8 orthologues in charophytic algae and land plants but not in Cyanobacteria or Chlorophyta. Our data reveal the major PSI assembly pathway in land plants. Our findings suggest that novel assembly mechanisms evolved during plant terrestrialization to regulate PSI assembly, perhaps as a means to cope with terrestrial environments.

Assembly and Repair of Photosystem II in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Oxygenic photosynthetic organisms use Photosystem II (PSII) to oxidize water and reduce plastoquinone. Here, we review the mechanisms by which PSII is assembled and turned over in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. This species has been used to make key discoveries in PSII research due to its metabolic flexibility and amenability to genetic approaches. PSII subunits originate from both nuclear and chloroplastic gene products in Chlamydomonas. Nuclear-encoded PSII subunits are transported into the chloroplast and chloroplast-encoded PSII subunits are translated by a coordinated mechanism. Active PSII dimers are built from discrete reaction center complexes in a process facilitated by assembly factors. The phosphorylation of core subunits affects supercomplex formation and localization within the thylakoid network. Proteolysis primarily targets the D1 subunit, which when replaced, allows PSII to be reactivated and completes a repair cycle. While PSII has been extensively studied using Chlamydomonas as a model species, important questions remain about its assembly and repair which are presented here.

Draft genome of novel cyanobacteria Sphaerothrix Gracilis isolated from coastal microplastics reveal insights to chemical ecology, bloom and plastic-utilization potential.

Cyanobacteria are oxygenic photosynthetic organisms which are found across many ecosystems, including freshwater and marine habitats. They are also found on natural and artificial surfaces. In this study, we cultured and characterise a novel cyanobacterium from the surfaces of foam microplastics of tropical coastal waters. We study the chemical ecology of this cyanobacterium, Sphaerothrix gracilis gen. et sp. nov., together with its potential to form harmful cyanobacterial blooms and bioremediation applications to combat plastic pollution. The genome of S. gracilis spanned 6.7 Mbp, with identification of antibiotic resistance, nitrogen-fixation, plastic-degrading and genes involved in harmful metabolite production. The transport of potentially harmful S. gracilis in coastal environments could have severe implications on human health and food security, especially in times of a cyanobacterial bloom.

Growth and Photosynthetic Efficiency of Microalgae and Plants with Different Levels of Complexity Exposed to a Simulated M-Dwarf Starlight.

Oxygenic photosynthetic organisms (OPOs) are primary producers on Earth and generate surface and atmospheric biosignatures, making them ideal targets to search for life from remote on Earth-like exoplanets orbiting stars different from the Sun, such as M-dwarfs. These stars emit very low light in the visible and most light in the far-red, an issue for OPOs, which mostly utilize visible light to photosynthesize and grow. After successfully testing procaryotic OPOs (cyanobacteria) under a simulated M-dwarf star spectrum (M7, 365-850 nm) generated through a custom-made lamp, we tested several eukaryotic OPOs: microalgae (Dixoniella giordanoi, Microchloropsis gaditana, Chromera velia, Chlorella vulgaris), a non-vascular plant (Physcomitrium patens), and a vascular plant (Arabidopsis thaliana). We assessed their growth and photosynthetic efficiency under three light conditions: M7, solar (SOL) simulated spectra, and far-red light (FR). Microalgae grew similarly in SOL and M7, while the moss P. patens showed slower growth in M7 with respect to SOL. A. thaliana grew similarly in SOL and M7, showing traits typical of shade-avoidance syndrome. Overall, the synergistic effect of visible and far-red light, also known as the Emerson enhancing effect, could explain the growth in M7 for all organisms. These results lead to reconsidering the possibility and capability of the growth of OPOs and are promising for finding biosignatures on exoplanets orbiting the habitable zone of distant stars.

Evolutionary Implications from Lipids in Membrane Bilayers and Photosynthetic Complexes in Cyanobacteria and Chloroplasts.

In biomembranes, lipids form bilayer structures that serve as the fluid matrix for membrane proteins and other hydrophobic compounds. Additionally, lipid molecules associate with membrane proteins and impact their structures and functions. In both cyanobacteria and the chloroplasts of plants and algae, the lipid bilayer of the thylakoid membrane consists of four distinct glycerolipid classes: monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol, and phosphatidylglycerol. These lipids are also integral components of photosynthetic complexes such as photosystem II and photosystem I. The lipid binding sites within the photosystems, as well as the lipid composition in the thylakoid membrane, are highly conserved between cyanobacteria and photosynthetic eukaryotes, and each lipid class has specific roles in oxygenic photosynthesis. This review aims to shed light on the potential evolutionary implications of lipid utilization in membrane lipid bilayers and photosynthetic complexes in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms.

Photosystem II monomeric antenna CP26 plays a key role in nonphotochemical quenching in Chlamydomonas.

Thermal dissipation of excess excitation energy, called nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), is 1 of the main photoprotective mechanisms in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. Here, we investigated the function of the monomeric photosystem II (PSII) antenna protein CP26 in photoprotection and light harvesting in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a model organism for green algae. We used CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and complementation to generate cp26 knockout mutants (named k6#) that did not negatively affect CP29 accumulation, which differed from previous cp26 mutants, allowing us to compare mutants specifically deprived of CP26, CP29, or both. The absence of CP26 partially affected PSII activity, causing reduced growth at low or medium light but not at high irradiances. However, the main phenotype observed in k6# mutants was a more than 70% reduction of NPQ compared to the wild type (Wt). This phenotype was fully rescued by genetic complementation and complemented strains accumulating different levels of CP26, demonstrating that ∼50% of CP26 content, compared to the Wt, was sufficient to restore the NPQ capacity. Our findings demonstrate a pivotal role for CP26 in NPQ induction, while CP29 is crucial for PSII activity. The genetic engineering of these 2 proteins could be a promising strategy to regulate the photosynthetic efficiency of microalgae under different light regimes.

Conformational Disorder Analysis of the Conditionally Disordered Protein CP12 from Arabidopsis thaliana in Its Different Redox States.

CP12 is a redox-dependent conditionally disordered protein universally distributed in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. It is primarily known as a light-dependent redox switch regulating the reductive step of the metabolic phase of photosynthesis. In the present study, a small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis of recombinant Arabidopsis CP12 (AtCP12) in a reduced and oxidized form confirmed the highly disordered nature of this regulatory protein. However, it clearly pointed out a decrease in the average size and a lower level of conformational disorder upon oxidation. We compared the experimental data with the theoretical profiles of pools of conformers generated with different assumptions and show that the reduced form is fully disordered, whereas the oxidized form is better described by conformers comprising both the circular motif around the C-terminal disulfide bond detected in previous structural analysis and the N-terminal disulfide bond. Despite the fact that disulfide bridges are usually thought to confer rigidity to protein structures, in the oxidized AtCP12, their presence coexists with a disordered nature. Our results rule out the existence of significant amounts of structured and compact conformations of free AtCP12 in a solution, even in its oxidized form, thereby highlighting the importance of recruiting partner proteins to complete its structured final folding.

Long-term light adaptation of light-harvesting and energy-transfer processes in the glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa under different light conditions.

In response to fluctuation in light intensity and quality, oxygenic photosynthetic organisms modify their light-harvesting and excitation energy-transfer processes to maintain optimal photosynthetic activity. Glaucophytes, which are a group of primary symbiotic algae, possess light-harvesting antennas called phycobilisomes (PBSs) consistent with cyanobacteria and red algae. However, compared with cyanobacteria and red algae, glaucophytes are poorly studied and there are few reports on the regulation of photosynthesis in the group. In this study, we examined the long-term light adaptation of light-harvesting functions in a glaucophyte, Cyanophora paradoxa, grown under different light conditions. Compared with cells grown under white light, the relative number of PBSs to photosystems (PSs) increased in blue-light-grown cells and decreased in green-, yellow-, and red-light-grown cells. Moreover, the PBS number increased with increment in the monochromatic light intensity. More energy was transferred from PBSs to PSII than to PSI under blue light, whereas energy transfer from PBSs to PSII was reduced under green and yellow lights, and energy transfer from the PBSs to both PSs decreased under red light. Decoupling of PBSs was induced by intense green, yellow, and red lights. Energy transfer from PSII to PSI (spillover) was observed, but the contribution of the spillover did not distinctly change depending on the culture light intensity and quality. These results suggest that the glaucophyte C. paradoxa modifies the light-harvesting abilities of both PSs and excitation energy-transfer processes between the light-harvesting antennas and both PSs during long-term light adaption.

GUN4 appeared early in cyanobacterial evolution.

Photosynthesis relies on chlorophylls, which are synthesized via a common tetrapyrrole trunk pathway also leading to heme, vitamin B12, and other pigmented cofactors. The first committed step for chlorophyll biosynthesis is insertion of magnesium into protoporphyrin IX by magnesium chelatase. Magnesium chelatase is composed of H-, I-, and D-subunits, with the tetrapyrrole substrate binding to the H-subunit. This subunit is rapidly inactivated in the presence of substrate, light, and oxygen, so oxygenic photosynthetic organisms require mechanisms to protect magnesium chelatase from similar loss of function. An additional protein, GUN4, binds to the H-subunit and to tetrapyrroles. GUN4 has been proposed to serve this protective role via its ability to bind linear tetrapyrroles (bilins). In the current work, we probe the origins of bilin binding by GUN4 via comparative phylogenetic analysis and biochemical validation of a conserved bilin-binding motif. Based on our results, we propose that bilin-binding GUN4 proteins arose early in cyanobacterial evolution and that this early acquisition represents an ancient adaptation for maintaining chlorophyll biosynthesis in the presence of light and oxygen.

In situ structure of the red algal phycobilisome-PSII-PSI-LHC megacomplex.

In oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, light energy is captured by antenna systems and transferred to photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI) to drive photosynthesis1,2. The antenna systems of red algae consist of soluble phycobilisomes (PBSs) and transmembrane light-harvesting complexes (LHCs)3. Excitation energy transfer pathways from PBS to photosystems remain unclear owing to the lack of structural information. Here we present in situ structures of PBS-PSII-PSI-LHC megacomplexes from the red alga Porphyridium purpureum at near-atomic resolution using cryogenicelectron tomography and in situ single-particle analysis4, providing interaction details between PBS, PSII and PSI. The structures reveal several unidentified and incomplete proteins and their roles in the assembly of the megacomplex, as well as a huge and sophisticated pigment network. This work provides a solid structural basis for unravelling the mechanisms of PBS-PSII-PSI-LHC megacomplex assembly, efficient energy transfer from PBS to the two photosystems, and regulation of energy distribution between PSII and PSI.

Biochemical and spectroscopic characterization of PSI-LHCI from the red alga Cyanidium caldarium.

Light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) have been diversified in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, and play an essential role in capturing light energy which is transferred to two types of photosystem cores to promote charge-separation reactions. Red algae are one of the groups of photosynthetic eukaryotes, and their chlorophyll(Chl) a-binding LHCs are specifically associated with photosystem I (PSI). In this study, we purified three types of preparations, PSI-LHCI supercomplexes, PSI cores, and isolated LHCIs, from the red alga Cyanidium caldarium, and examined their properties. The polypeptide bands of PSI-LHCI showed characteristic PSI and LHCI components without contamination by other proteins. The carotenoid composition of LHCI displayed zeaxanthins, β-cryptoxanthins, and β-carotenes. Among the carotenoids, zeaxanthins were enriched in LHCI. On the contrary, both zeaxanthins and β-cryptoxanthins couldnot be detected from PSI, suggesting that zeaxanthins and β-cryptoxanthins are bound to LHCI but not PSI. A Qy peak of Chl a in the absorption spectrum of LHCI was shifted to a shorter wavelength than those in PSI and PSI-LHCI. This tendency is in line with the result of fluorescence-emission spectra, in which the emission maxima of PSI-LHCI, PSI, and LHCI appeared at 727, 719, and 677nm, respectively. Time-resolved fluorescence spectra of LHCI represented no 719 and 727-nm fluorescence bands from picoseconds to nanoseconds. These results indicate that energy levels of Chls around/within LHCIs and within PSI are changed by binding LHCIs to PSI. Based on these findings, we discuss the expression, function, and structure of red algal PSI-LHCI supercomplexes.

Chilling Upregulates Expression of the PsbS and LhcSR Genes in the Chloroplasts of the Green Microalga Lobosphaera incisa IPPAS C-2047.

Non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of excited chlorophyll states is essential for protecting the photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) from the excessive light-induced damage in all groups of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. The key component of the NPQ mechanism in green algae and some other groups of algae and mosses is the LhcSR protein of the light harvesting complex (LHC) protein superfamily. In vascular plants, LhcSR is replaced by PsbS, another member of the LHC superfamily and a subunit of photosystem II (PSII). PsbS also performs the photoprotective function in mosses. For a long time, PsbS had been believed to be nonfunctional in green algae, although the corresponding gene was discovered in the genome of these organisms. The first evidence of the PsbS accumulation in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in response to the increase in irradiance was obtained only six years ago. However, the observed increase in the PsbS content was short-termed (on an hour-timescale). Here, we report a significant (more than three orders of magnitude) and prolonged (four days) upregulation of PsbS expression in response to the chilling-induced high-light stress followed by a less significant (~ tenfold) increase in the PsbS expression for nine days. This is the first evidence for the long-term upregulation of the PsbS expression in green alga (Chlorophyta) in response to stress. Our data indicate that the role of PsbS in the PSA of Chlorophyta is not limited to the first-line defense against stress, as it was previously assumed, but includes full-scale participation in the photoprotection of PSA from the environmental stress factors.

Photosynthetic modulation during the diurnal cycle in a unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacterium grown under nitrogen-replete and nitrogen-fixing conditions

Cyanobacteria are the only oxygenic photosynthetic organisms that can fix nitrogen. In diazotrophic cyanobacteria, the regulation of photosynthesis during the diurnal cycle is hypothesized to be linked with nitrogen fixation and involve the D1 protein isoform PsbA4. The amount of bioavailable nitrogen has a major impact on productivity in aqueous environments. In contrast to low- or nitrogen-fixing (−N) conditions, little data on photosynthetic regulation under nitrogen-replete (+ N) conditions are available. We compared the regulation of photosynthesis under −N and + N conditions during the diurnal cycle in wild type and a psbA4 deletion strain of the unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacterium Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142. We observed common changes to light harvesting and photosynthetic electron transport during the dark in + N and −N conditions and found that these modifications occur in both diazotrophic and non-diazotrophic cyanobacteria. Nitrogen availability increased PSII titer when cells transitioned from dark to light and promoted growth. Under −N conditions, deletion of PsbA4 modified charge recombination in dark and regulation of PSII titer during dark to light transition. We conclude that darkness impacts the acceptor-side modifications to PSII and photosynthetic electron transport in cyanobacteria independently of the nitrogen-fixing status and the presence of PsbA4.

A putative bifunctional CPD/ (6-4) photolyase from the cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. PCC 7335 is encoded by a UV-B inducible operon: New insights into the evolution of photolyases.

Photosynthetic organisms are continuously exposed to solar ultraviolet radiation-B (UV-B) because of their autotrophic lifestyle. UV-B provokes DNA damage, such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) or pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone photoproducts (6-4 PPs). The cryptochrome/photolyase family (CPF) comprises flavoproteins that can bind damaged or undamaged DNA. Photolyases (PHRs) are enzymes that repair either CPDs or 6-4 PPs. A natural bifunctional CPD/(6-4)- PHR (PhrSph98) was recently isolated from the UV-resistant bacteria Sphingomonas sp. UV9. In this work, phylogenetic studies of bifunctional CPD/(6-4)- photolyases and their evolutionary relationship with other CPF members were performed. Amino acids involved in electron transfer and binding to FAD cofactor and DNA lesions were conserved in proteins from proteobacteria, planctomycete, bacteroidete, acidobacteria and cyanobacteria clades. Genome analysis revealed that the cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. PCC 7335 encodes a two-gene assembly operon coding for a PHR and a bifunctional CPD/(6-4) PHR- like. Operon structure was validated by RT-qPCR analysis and the polycistronic transcript accumulated after 15 min of UV-B irradiation. Conservation of structure and evolution is discussed. This study provides evidence for a UV-B inducible PHR operon that encodes a CPD/(6-4)- photolyase homolog with a putative bifunctional role in the repair of CPDs and 6-4 PPs damages in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms.

An Insight into the Bicarbonate Effect in Photosystem II through the Prism of the JIP Test

Photosystem II (PSII) is the unique pigment–protein complex that is capable of evolving molecular oxygen using solar energy. The activity of PSII determines the overall productivity of all oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. It is well known that the absence of HCO3− induces a drop in the activity of PSII. However, it is not yet clear what type of photochemical reaction, single turn-over or multiple turn-over, HCO3− is involved in. Kinetic parameters of this (these) involvement(s) are almost unexplored now. This work addresses these issues. Using the JIP test, being the perspective noninvasive method for measuring PSII activity in plants, this paper describes how HCO3− deficiency affects the electron transfer on the oxidizing as well as the reducing sides of PSII in thylakoids and in PSII preparations from the leaves of pea plants. HCO3− was found to be simultaneously involved both in single turn-over and in multiple turn-over events (“dynamical processes”). Moreover, the involvement of HCO3− in dynamical photochemical processes was revealed to be associated with both sides of PSII, being the rate limiting on the reducing side, which follows from obtained kinetic parameters. The involvement of HCO3− in dynamical processes as the constant exchangeable ligand is discussed for both the electron donor and acceptor sides of PSII.

Harnessing photosynthesis to produce electricity using cyanobacteria, green algae, seaweeds and plants.

The conversion of solar energy into electrical current by photosynthetic organisms has the potential to produce clean energy. Life on earth depends on photosynthesis, the major mechanism for biological conversion of light energy into chemical energy. Indeed, billions of years of evolution and adaptation to extreme environmental habitats have resulted in highly efficient light-harvesting and photochemical systems in the photosynthetic organisms that can be found in almost every ecological habitat of our world. In harnessing photosynthesis to produce green energy, the native photosynthetic system is interfaced with electrodes and electron mediators to yield bio-photoelectrochemical cells (BPECs) that transform light energy into electrical power. BPECs utilizing plants, seaweeds, unicellular photosynthetic microorganisms, thylakoid membranes or purified complexes, have been studied in attempts to construct efficient and non-polluting BPECs to produce electricity or hydrogen for use as green energy. The high efficiency of photosynthetic light-harvesting and energy production in the mostly unpolluting processes that make use of water and CO2 and produce oxygen beckons us to develop this approach. On the other hand, the need to use physiological conditions, the sensitivity to photoinhibition as well as other abiotic stresses, and the requirement to extract electrons from the system are challenging. In this review, we describe the principles and methods of the different kinds of BPECs that use natural photosynthesis, with an emphasis on BPECs containing living oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. We start with a brief summary of BPECs that use purified photosynthetic complexes. This strategy has produced high-efficiency BPECs. However, the lifetimes of operation of these BPECs are limited, and the preparation is laborious and expensive. We then describe the use of thylakoid membranes in BPECs which requires less effort and usually produces high currents but still suffers from the lack of ability to self-repair damage caused by photoinhibition. This obstacle of the utilization of photosynthetic systems can be significantly reduced by using intact living organisms in the BPEC. We thus describe here progress in developing BPECs that make use of cyanobacteria, green algae, seaweeds and higher plants. Finally, we discuss the future challenges of producing high and longtime operating BPECs for practical use.

Distinctive in vitro ATP Hydrolysis Activity of AtVIPP1, a Chloroplastic ESCRT-III Superfamily Protein in Arabidopsis.

Vesicle-inducing protein in plastid 1 (VIPP1), characteristic to oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, is a membrane-remodeling factor that forms homo-oligomers and functions in thylakoid membrane formation and maintenance. The cyanobacterial VIPP1 structure revealed a monomeric folding pattern similar to that of endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) III. Characteristic to VIPP1, however, is its own GTP and ATP hydrolytic activity without canonical domains. In this study, we found that histidine-tagged Arabidopsis VIPP1 (AtVIPP1) hydrolyzed GTP and ATP to produce GDP and ADP in vitro, respectively. Unexpectedly, the observed GTPase and ATPase activities were biochemically distinguishable, because the ATPase was optimized for alkaline conditions and dependent on Ca2+ as well as Mg2+, with a higher affinity for ATP than GTP. We found that a version of AtVIPP1 protein with a mutation in its nucleotide-binding site, as deduced from the cyanobacterial structure, retained its hydrolytic activity, suggesting that Arabidopsis and cyanobacterial VIPP1s have different properties. Negative staining particle analysis showed that AtVIPP1 formed particle or rod structures that differed from those of cyanobacteria and Chlamydomonas. These results suggested that the nucleotide hydrolytic activity and oligomer formation of VIPP1 are common in photosynthetic organisms, whereas their properties differ among species.

Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis.

The oxygen-evolving center (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII) of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms is a unique heterometallic-oxide Mn4CaO5-cluster that catalyzes water splitting into electrons, protons, and molecular oxygen through a five-state cycle (Sn, n = 0 ~ 4). It serves as the blueprint for the developing of the man-made water-splitting catalysts to generate solar fuel in artificial photosynthesis. Understanding the structure–function relationship of this natural catalyst is a great challenge and a long-standing issue, which is severely restricted by the lack of a precise chemical model for this heterometallic-oxide cluster. However, it is a great challenge for chemists to precisely mimic the OEC in a laboratory. Recently, significant advances have been achieved and a series of artificial Mn4XO4-clusters (X = Ca/Y/Gd) have been reported, which closely mimic both the geometric structure and the electronic structure, as well as the redox property of the OEC. These new advances provide a structurally well-defined molecular platform to study the structure–function relationship of the OEC and shed new light on the design of efficient catalysts for the water-splitting reaction in artificial photosynthesis.
