JWST MIRI and NIRCam unveil previously unseen infrared stellar populations in NGC 6822

ABSTRACT NGC 6822 is a nearby (∼490 kpc) non-interacting low-metallicity (0.2 Z⊙) dwarf galaxy which hosts several prominent H ii regions, including sites of highly embedded active star formation. In this work, we present an imaging survey of NGC 6822 conducted with the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST. We describe the data reduction, source extraction, and stellar population identifications from combined near- and mid-infrared (IR) photometry. Our NIRCam observations reach 7 mag deeper than previous JHKs surveys of this galaxy, which were sensitive to just below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). These JWST observations thus reveal for the first time in the near-IR the red clump stellar population and extend nearly 3 mag deeper. In the mid-IR, we observe roughly 2 mag below the TRGB with the MIRI F770W and F1000W filters. With these improvements in sensitivity, we produce a catalogue of ∼900 000 point sources over an area of ∼6.0 × 4.3 arcmin2. We present several NIRCam and MIRI colour–magnitude diagrams and discuss which colour combinations provide useful separations of various stellar populations to aid in future JWST observation planning. Finally, we find populations of carbon- and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars which will assist in improving our understanding of dust production in low-metallicity, early Universe analogue galaxies.

Production of s-process elements in asymptotic giant branch stars as revealed by Gaia/GSP-Spec abundances

Context. The recent parameterisation by the GSP-Spec module of Gaia/Radial Velocity Spectrometer stellar spectra has produced an homogeneous catalogue of about 174 000 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Among the 13 chemical elements presented in this Gaia third data release, the abundance of two of them (cerium and neodymium) have been estimated in most of these AGB stars. These two species are formed by slow neutron captures (s-process) in the interior of low- and intermediate-mass stars. They belong to the family of second-peak s-process elements. Aims. We study the content and production rate of Ce and Nd in AGB stars, using the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances derived by the GSP-Spec module. Methods. We defined a working sample of 19 544 AGB stars with high-quality Ce and/or Nd abundances, selected by applying a specific combination of the GSP-Spec quality flags. We compared these abundances with the yield production predicted by AGB evolutionary models. Results. We first confirmed that the majority of the working sample is composed of AGB stars by estimating their absolute magnitude in the K-band and their properties in a Gaia-2MASS diagram. We also checked that these stars are oxygen-rich AGB stars, as assumed during the GSP-Spec parameterisation. We found a good correlation between the Ce and Nd abundances, confirming the high quality of the derived abundances and that these species indeed belong to the same s-process family. We also found higher Ce and Nd abundances for more evolved AGB stars of similar metallicity, illustrating the successive mixing episodes enriching the AGB star surface in s-process elements formed deeper in their stellar interior. We then compared the observed Ce and Nd abundances with the FRUITY and Monash AGB yields and found that the higher Ce and Nd abundances cannot be explained by AGB stars of masses higher than 5 M⊙. In contrast, the yields predicted by both models for AGB stars with an initial mass between ∼1.5 and ∼2.5 M⊙ and metallicities between ∼−0.5 and ∼0.0 dex are fully compatible with the observed GSP-Spec abundances. Conclusions. This work based on the largest catalogue of high-quality second-peak s-element abundances in oxygen-rich AGB stars allows evolutionary models to be constrained and confirms the fundamental role played by low- and intermediate-mass stars in the enrichment of the Universe in these chemical species.

Spatially resolving the AGB star V3 in the metal-poor globular cluster 47 Tuc with VLTI/GRAVITY

Context. Mass loss at the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) plays an important role not only in the final fates of stars, but also in the chemical evolution of galaxies. Nevertheless, the metallicity effects on AGB mass loss are not yet fully understood. Aims. We present spatially resolved observations of an AGB star, V3, in the metal-poor globular cluster 47 Tuc (NGC 104). Methods. The AGB star 47 Tuc V3 was observed using the GRAVITY instrument at ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at 2–2.45 μm, with a projected baseline length of up to 96 m. Results. The object 47 Tuc V3 has been spatially resolved and stands as the first to attempt to spatially resolve an individual star in a globular cluster. The uniform-disk fit to the observed data results in an angular diameter of ∼0.7 mas. Our modeling of the spectral energy distribution and near-infrared interferometric GRAVITY data suggests that the observed data can be explained by an optically thin dust shell with a 0.55 μm optical depth of 0.05–0.25, consisting of metallic iron grains, likely together with effects of the extended atmosphere of the central star. The dust temperature at the inner shell boundary is 500–800 K (corresponding to 23–90 stellar radii), significantly lower than observed in nearby oxygen-rich AGB stars. Radiation pressure on small (< 0.05 μm) iron grains is not sufficient to drive stellar winds. Therefore, iron grains may grow to larger sizes, even in the metal-poor environment. Alternatively, it is possible that the observed iron grain formation is a result of the mass outflow initiated by some other mechanism(s). Conclusions. The sensitivity and angular resolution of VLTI provides a new window onto spatially resolving individual stars in metal-poor globular clusters. This allows us to improve subsequent studies of the metallicity dependence of dust formation and mass loss.

Probabilistic classification of infrared-selected targets for SPHEREx mission: in search of young stellar objects

ABSTRACT We apply machine learning algorithms to classify infrared (IR)-selected targets for NASA’s upcoming Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission. In particular, we are interested in classifying young stellar objects (YSOs), which are essential for understanding the star formation process. Our approach differs from previous works, which have relied heavily on broad-band colour criteria to classify IR-bright objects, and are typically implemented in colour–colour and colour–magnitude diagrams. However, these methods do not state the confidence associated with the classification and the results from these methods are quite ambiguous due to the overlap of different source types in these diagrams. Here, we utilize photometric colours and magnitudes from seven near- and mid-IR bands simultaneously and employ machine and deep learning algorithms to carry out probabilistic classification of YSOs, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and main-sequence (MS) stars. Our approach also subclassifies YSOs into Class I, II, III, and flat spectrum YSOs, and AGB stars into carbon-rich and oxygen-rich AGB stars. We apply our methods to IR-selected targets compiled in preparation for SPHEREx which are likely to include YSOs and other classes of objects. Our classification indicates that out of 8308 384 sources, 1966 340 have class prediction with probability exceeding 90 per cent, amongst which $\sim 1.7~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ are YSOs, $\sim 58.2~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ are AGB stars, $\sim 40~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ are (reddened) MS stars, and $\sim 0.1~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ are AGNs whose red broad-band colours mimic YSOs. We validate our classification using the spatial distributions of predicted YSOs towards the Cygnus-X star-forming complex, as well as AGB stars across the Galactic plane.

Recent mass ejection from AGB star W Hya

We analyse archival ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) observations of two molecular line emissions, 12CO(3-2) and 29SiO(8-7), from oxygen-rich AGB (Asymptotic Giant Branch) star W Hya. Together with results of earlier VLT observations at visible and infrared wavelengths, our results suggest a two-component picture of the morpho-kinematics of the circumstellar envelope (CSE), one stable over time, at the scale of centuries, and the other variable, at the scale of years. The stable component consists of an approximately spherical shell of gas and dust expanding radially to a terminal velocity of ~5 km s−1at a distance of ~30 au from the star. It is found to display comparable features as seen in the CSE of R Dor, a star similar to W Hya. The variable component projects on the plane of the sky over a region confined to the neighbourhood of the star and elongated toward the north. Its very high density and sudden acceleration suggest an interpretation in terms of mass ejection initiated a few years ago. We discuss its properties in relation with earlier observations of dust formation in the same region. Our results offer a picture of the wind of W Hya that differs significantly from the picture that could be suggested by earlier analyses, giving evidence for a mass ejection that had been previously overlooked and underscoring new relations between the dust and gas emissions. They have an impact on the evidence published earlier for the presence of CO masers. They favour an interpretation in terms of convective cell ejections playing the main role in the generation of the nascent wind, the stable component of the CSE being seen as the result of many successive such events occurring in different directions at short time intervals.

Distance estimates for AGB stars from parallax measurements

Context. Estimating the distances to asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars using optical measurements of their parallaxes is not straightforward because of the large uncertainties introduced by their dusty envelopes, their large angular sizes, and their surface brightness variability. Aims. This paper aims to assess the reliability of the distances derived with Gaia DR3 parallaxes for AGB stars, and provide a new distance catalogue for a sample of ∼200 nearby AGB stars. Methods. We compared the parallaxes from Gaia DR3 with parallaxes measured with maser observations with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to determine a statistical correction factor for the DR3 parallaxes using a sub-sample of 33 maser-emitting oxygen-rich nearby AGB stars. We then calculated the distances of a total of ∼200 AGB stars in the DEATHSTAR project using a Bayesian statistical approach on the corrected DR3 parallaxes and a prior based on the previously determined Galactic distribution of AGB stars. We performed radiative transfer modelling of the stellar and dust emission to determine the luminosity of the sources in the VLBI sub-sample based on the distances derived from maser parallaxes, and derived a new bolometric period-luminosity relation for Galactic oxygen-rich Mira variables. Results. We find that the errors on the Gaia DR3 parallaxes given in the Gaia DR3 catalogue are underestimated by a factor of 5.44 for the brightest sources (G < 8 mag). Fainter sources (8 ≤ G < 12) require a lower parallax error inflation factor of 2.74. We obtain a Gaia DR3 parallax zero-point offset of −0.077 mas for bright AGB stars. The offset becomes more negative for fainter AGB stars. After correcting the DR3 parallaxes, we find that the derived distances are associated with significant, asymmetrical errors for more than 40% of the sources in our sample. We obtain a PL relation of the form Mbol = (− 3.31 ± 0.24) [log P − 2.5]+(−4.317 ± 0.060) for the oxygen-rich Mira variables in the Milky Way. A new distance catalogue based on these results is provided for the sources in the DEATHSTAR sample. Conclusions. The corrected Gaia DR3 parallaxes can be used to estimate distances for AGB stars using the AGB prior, but we confirm that one needs to be careful when the uncertainties on parallax measurements are larger than 20%, which can result in model-dependent distances and source-dependent offsets. We find that a RUWE (re-normalised unit weight error) below 1.4 does not guarantee reliable distance estimates and we advise against the use of only the RUWE to measure the quality of Gaia DR3 astrometric data for individual AGB stars.

The C/M Ratio of AGB Stars in the Local Group Galaxies

The number ratio of carbon-rich to oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (the so-called C/M ratio) is closely related to the evolution environment of the host galaxy. This work studies the C/M ratio in 14 galaxies within the Local Group with the most complete and clean sample of member stars identified in our previous works. The borderlines between carbon-rich AGB and oxygen-rich AGB stars as well as red supergiants are defined by Gaussian mixture model fitting to the number density in the (J−K)/K diagram for the member stars of the LMC and M33, and then applied to the other galaxies by shifting the difference in the position of tip red giant branch (TRGB). The C/M ratios are obtained after precise and consistent categorization. Although for galaxies with larger distance modulo there is greater uncertainty, the C/M ratio is clearly found to decrease with the color index (J−K)0 of TRGB as the indicator of metallicity, which agrees with previous studies and can be explained by the fact that carbon stars are more easily formed in a metal-poor environment. Furthermore, the C/M ratio within M33 is found to increase with galactocentric distance, which coincides with this scenario and the galactic chemical evolution model. On the other hand, the C/M ratio within M31 is found to decrease with galactocentric radius, which deserves further study.

Inefficient Growth of SiOx Grains: Implications for Circumstellar Outflows

To explain observations of abundant circumstellar dust and high stellar wind velocity, most models simply postulate the efficient nucleation and growth of silicate dust particles. Here, we report measurement of the SiO–(SiOx)n grain sticking coefficient in a microgravity sounding rocket experiment, indicating very inefficient (0.005–0.016) grain formation from the vapor. Application of this measurement to radiative-driven winds in oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars indicates that the initial grain condensate population should consist of very tiny dust particles in very large numbers. Aggregation of this dust population will produce low-dimension fractal aggregates that should couple well to the stellar radiation field and efficiently drive stellar mass loss.

First detection of AlF line emission towards M-type AGB stars

The nucleosynthesis production of fluorine (F) is still a matter of debate. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are one of the main candidates for F production. However, their contribution to the total F budget is not fully known due to the lack of observations. In this paper, we report the detection of aluminium monofluoride (AlF) line emission, one of the two main carriers of F in the gas-phase in the outflow of evolved stars, towards five nearby oxygen-rich (M-type) AGB stars. We studied the Atacama large millimetre/sub-millimetre array (ALMA) observations of AlF (v = 0, J = 4—3, 9–8, 10–9, and 15–14) and (v = 1, J = 7–6) line emission towards o Ceti, and (v = 0, J = 7–6 and 15–14) lines towards R Leo. We also report a tentative detection of AlF (v = 0, J = 7–6) line in IK Tau, (v = 0, J = 15–14) line towards R Dor, and (v = 0, J = 7–6 and J = 15–14) lines in W Hya. From spatially resolved observations, we estimated the AlF emitting region with a radius ~11R⋆ for o Ceti and ~9R⋆ for R Leo. From population diagram analysis, we report the AlF column densities of ~5.8 × 1015 cm−2 and ~3 × 1015 cm−2 for o Ceti and R Leo, respectively, within these regions. For o Ceti, we used the C18O (v = 0, J = 3–2) observations to estimate the H2 column density of the emitting region. We found a fractional abundance of fAIF/H2 ~ (2.5 ± 1.7) × 10−8. This gives a lower limit on the F budget in o Ceti and is compatible with the solar F budget fF/H2 = (5 ± 2) × 10−8. For R Leo, a fractional abundance fAIF/H2 = (1.2 ± 0.5) × 10−8 is estimated. For other sources, we cannot precisely determine the emitting region based on the available data. Assuming an emitting region with a radius of ~11R⋆ and the rotational temperatures derived for o Ceti and R Leo, we crudely approximated the AlF column density to be ~(1.2−1.5) × 1015 cm−2 in W Hya, ~(2.5−3.0) × 1014 cm−2 in R Dor, and ~(0.6−1.0) × 1016 cm−2 in IK Tau. These result in fractional abundances within a range of fAIF/H2 ~ (0.1 − 4) × 10−8 in W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau.

ATOMIUM: ALMA tracing the origins of molecules in dust forming oxygen rich M-type stars

This overview paper presentsATOMIUM, a Large Programme in Cycle 6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The goal ofATOMIUMis to understand the dynamics and the gas phase and dust formation chemistry in the winds of evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars. A more general aim is to identify chemical processes applicable to other astrophysical environments. Seventeen oxygen-rich AGB and RSG stars spanning a range in (circum)stellar parameters and evolutionary phases were observed in a homogeneous observing strategy allowing for an unambiguous comparison. Data were obtained between 213.83 and 269.71 GHz at high (∼0″​​.025–0″​​.050), medium (∼0″​​.13–0″​​.24), and low (∼1″) angular resolution. The sensitivity per ∼1.3 km s−1channel was 1.5–5 mJy beam−1, and the line-free channels were used to image the millimetre wave continuum. Our primary molecules for studying the gas dynamics and dust formation are CO, SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, TiO2, and HCN; secondary molecules include SO, SO2, SiS, CS, H2O, and NaCl. The scientific motivation, survey design, sample properties, data reduction, and an overview of the data products are described. In addition, we highlight one scientific result – the wind kinematics of theATOMIUMsources. Our analysis suggests that theATOMIUMsources often have a slow wind acceleration, and a fraction of the gas reaches a velocity which can be up to a factor of two times larger than previously reported terminal velocities assuming isotropic expansion. Moreover, the wind kinematic profiles establish that the radial velocity described by the momentum equation for a spherical wind structure cannot capture the complexity of the velocity field. In fifteen sources, some molecular transitions other than12COv = 0J = 2 − 1 reach a higher outflow velocity, with a spatial emission zone that is often greater than 30 stellar radii, but much less than the extent of CO. We propose that a binary interaction with a (sub)stellar companion may (partly) explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the projected velocity field. TheATOMIUMdata hence provide a crucial benchmark for the wind dynamics of evolved stars in single and binary star models.

Molecules, shocks, and disk in the axi-symmetric wind of the MS-type AGB star RS Cancri

Context. The latest evolutionary phases of low- and intermediate-mass stars are characterized by complex physical processes like turbulence, convection, stellar pulsations, magnetic fields, condensation of solid particles, and the formation of massive outflows that inject freshly produced heavy elements and dust particles into the interstellar medium. Aims. By investigating individual objects in detail, we wish to analyze and disentangle the effects of the interrelated physical processes on the structure of the wind-forming regions around them. Methods. We use the Northern Extended Millimeter Array to obtain spatially and spectrally resolved observations of the semi-regular asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star RS Cancri and apply detailed 3D reconstruction modeling and local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer calculations in order to shed light on the morpho-kinematic structure of its inner, wind-forming environment. Results. We detect 32 lines of 13 molecules and isotopologs (CO, SiO, SO, SO2, H2O, HCN, PN), including several transitions from vibrationally excited states. HCN, H13CN, and millimeter vibrationally excited H2O, SO, 34SO, SO2, and PN are detected for the first time in RS Cnc. Evidence for rotation is seen in HCN, SO, SO2, and SiO(v = 1). From CO and SiO channel maps, we find an inner, equatorial density enhancement, and a bipolar outflow structure with a mass-loss rate of 1 × 10−7 M⊙yr−1 for the equatorial region and of 2 × 10−7 M⊙yr−1 for the polar outflows. The 12CO/13CO ratio is measured to be ~20 on average, 24 ± 2 in the polar outflows and 19 ± 3 in the equatorial region. We do not find direct evidence of a companion that might explain this kind of kinematic structure, and explore the possibility that a magnetic field might be the cause of it. The innermost molecular gas is influenced by stellar pulsation and possibly by convective cells that leave their imprint on broad wings of certain molecular lines, such as SiO and SO. Conclusions. RS Cnc is one of the few nearby, low-mass-loss-rate, oxygen-rich AGB stars with a wind displaying both an equatorial disk and bipolar outflows. Its orientation with respect to the line of sight is particularly favorable for a reliable study of its morpho-kinematics. Nevertheless, the mechanism causing early spherical symmetry breaking remains uncertain, calling for additional high spatial- and spectral-resolution observations of the emission of different molecules in different transitions, along with more thorough investigation of the coupling among the different physical processes at play.

Rate coefficients of the aluminium monoxide formation by radiative association

ABSTRACT Radiative association may be a key pathway for the formation of aluminium monoxide (AlO) in diffuse interstellar clouds, especially for the oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In this work, we investigated the radiative association of AlO by the collision of the aluminium and oxygen atoms in their electronic ground states, which is thought to be the most probable radiative association process. First, the potential energy curves for 12 electronic states and the dipole moments between these states were calculated by the state-of-the-art ab initio methodology. Then, the cross-sections and rate coefficients for the radiative association of AlO were computed for the temperatures in the range of 10–10 000 K. The total rate coefficients are of the order of 2.73 × 10−19–1.14 × 10−16 cm3 s−1, and the A2Π → X2Σ+, 12Δ → A2Π, 12Π → X2Σ+, and 22Σ− → A2Π transitions play a key role. The calculated results can be used to investigate the chemical evolution of dust formation in the photospheres of the oxygen-rich AGB stars.

Kinetic Study of the Reactions of AlO with H2O and H2; Precursors to Stellar Dust Formation

AlO is relatively abundant around oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, where it can react with major gas-phase species such as H2 and H2O to form AlOH. These Al-containing species are the likely precursors of refractory alumina nanoparticles, which may provide the nuclei for dust formation. In the present study, the kinetics of these AlO reactions were measured from 295 to 780 K using the pulsed laser photolysis of Al(C5H7O2)3, with time-resolved laser induced fluorescence detection of AlO. The experimental results were interpreted using quantum chemistry calculations and a Master Equation solver for reactions with multiple energy wells. For the recombination reaction AlO + H2O (+ N2) → Al(OH)2, log10(krec,0/cm6 molecule–2 s–1) = −32.9185 + 8.80276 log10(T) – 2.4723(log10(T))2; log10(krec,∞/cm3 molecule–1 s–1) = −19.4686 + 7.62037 log10(T) – 1.47214(log10(T))2; Fc = 0.28 (uncertainty ±13% from 295 to 760 K). For the bimolecular reactions, k(AlO + H2O → AlOH + OH) = (3.89 ± 0.47) × 10–10 exp(−(1295 ± 150)/T) and k(AlO + H2 → AlOH + H) = (5.37 ± 0.52) × 10–13 (T/300)(2.77 ± 0.19) exp(−(2190 ± 110)/T) cm3 molecule–1 s–1. Rate coefficients for Al + H2O → AlOH + H, AlOH + H → AlO + H2 or Al + H2O, and the absorption cross sections of AlOH and AlO were calculated theoretically. Al chemistry around an O-rich AGB star was then investigated using a β-trajectory model, which predicts that AlOH is the major gas-phase Al species beyond two stellar radii and shows that the relative AlO abundance is very sensitive to the AlOH photolysis rate.

Gas-phase Synthesis of Silaformaldehyde (H2SiO) and Hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) in Outflows of Oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

Abstract Silicon- and oxygen-containing species such as silicon monoxide (SiO) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) represent basic molecular building blocks connected to the growth of silicate grains in outflows of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars like R Doradus. Yet the fundamental mechanisms of the formation of silicate grains and the early processes that initiate the coupling of the silicon with the oxygen chemistries in circumstellar envelopes have remained obscure. Here, in a crossed molecular beams experiment combined with ab initio electronic structure calculations, we reveal that at least the d2-silaformaldehyde (D2SiO) and d2-hydroxysilylene (DSiOD) molecules—proxies for the astronomically elusive silaformaldehyde (H2SiO) and hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) molecules—can be synthesized via the reaction of the D1-silylidyne radical (SiD; X2Π) with D2-water (D2O) under single-collision conditions. This system represents a benchmark of a previously overlooked class of reactions, in which the silicon–oxygen bond coupling can be initiated by a reaction between the simplest silicon-bearing radical (silylidyne) and one of the most abundant species in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved oxygen-rich AGB stars (water). As supported by novel astrochemical modeling, considering that silicon- and oxygen-containing species like H2SiO and HSiOH might be photolyzed easily, they ultimately connect to simple molecular precursors such as SiO that drive a chain of reactions conceivably forming higher molecular weight silicon oxides and, ultimately, a population of silicates at high temperatures.

Morpho-kinematics of the circumstellar envelope of the AGB star R Dor: a global view

ABSTRACT We analyse new ALMA observations of the 29SiO (ν = 0, J = 8–7) and SO2 (ν = 0, 343,31−342,32) line emissions of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of the oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star, R Dor. With a spatial resolution of ∼2.3 au, the observations cover distances below ∼30 au from the star providing a link between earlier observations and clarifying some open issues. The main conclusions are the following. (i) Rotation is confined below ∼15 au from the star, with velocity reaching a maximum below 10 au and morphology showing no significant disc-like flattening. (ii) In the south-eastern quadrant, a large Doppler velocity gas stream is studied in more detail than previously possible and its possible association with an evaporating planetary companion is questioned. (iii) A crude evaluation of the respective contributions of rotation, expansion and turbulence to the morpho-kinematics is presented. Significant line broadening occurs below ∼12 au from the star and causes the presence of high Doppler velocity components near the line of sight pointing to the centre of the star. (iv) Strong absorption of the continuum emission of the stellar disc and its immediate dusty environment is observed to extend beyond the disc in the form of self-absorption. The presence of a cold SiO layer extending up to some 60 au from the star is shown to be the cause. (v) Line emissions from SO, 28SiO, CO and HCN molecules are used to probe the CSE up to some 100 au from the star, revealing the presence of two broad back-to-back outflows, the morphology of which is studied in finer detail than in earlier work.

Effects of anisotropy on absorption cross-section spectra of medium-sized spheroidal corundum particles

Context. It has been widely accepted that corundum particles condense in the atmospheres of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars and effectively produce an infrared emission feature at 13 μm. Laboratory experiments have predicted that these particles have the shape of oblate spheroids. Aims. We investigate the influence of the material anisotropy of uniaxial corundum on absorption cross section spectra of medium sized spheroidal particles in the infrared spectral region. Methods. We compared absorption cross-section spectra of the anisotropic corundum particles gained by finite-difference time-domain simulations to spectra calculated by a weighted sum approximation of the according fictive isotropic materials, with one material having the dielectric function of the a–b-plane and the other having the dielectric function of the c-axis of corundum. We carried out investigations for different axes ratios of the spheroids, particles volumes, and different geometries of the dielectric axes to the particle axes as well as to the polarization and propagation direction of the incident light. Results. We observed several effects attributed to anisotropy that are non-additive, so that they cannot be reproduced with the combined spectra of the isotropic materials. Conclusions. Care should be taken when calculating the corundum infrared spectrum with simpler approaches. When particle sizes above 1 μm are to be considered, the T-matrix formalism delivers correct band shifts and bulk modes for many, but not all bands. This remains true in orientation-averaged spectra and for particles in the 0.1 μm size range.

Red Supergiants in M31 and M33. I. The Complete Sample

Abstract The aim of this paper is to establish a complete sample of red supergiants (RSGs) in M31 and M33. The member stars of the two galaxies are selected from the near-infrared (NIR) point sources after removing the foreground dwarfs from their obvious branch in the J − H/H − K diagram with the archival photometric data taken by the UKIRT/WFCAM. This separation by NIR colors of dwarfs from giants is confirmed by the optical/infrared color–color diagrams (r − z/z − H and B − V/V − R) and the Gaia measurement of parallax and proper motion. The RSGs are then identified by their outstanding location in the members’ J − K/K diagram due to high luminosity and low effective temperature. The resultant sample has 5498 and 3055 RSGs in M31 and M33 respectively, which should be complete because the lower limiting K magnitude of RSGs in both cases is brighter than the complete magnitude of the UKIRT photometry. Analysis of the control fields finds that the pollution rate in the RSG sample is less than 1%. The by-product is the complete sample of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs), carbon-rich AGBs, thermally pulsing AGBs, and extreme AGBs. In addition, the tip-RGB is determined together with its implication on the distance modulus to M31 and M33.

Rotational Spectra of Vibrationally Excited AlO and TiO in Oxygen-rich Stars

Abstract Rotational transitions in vibrationally excited AlO and TiO—two possible precursors of dust—were observed in the 300 GHz range (1 mm wavelength) toward the oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars R Dor and IK Tau with ALMA, and vibrationally excited AlO was observed toward the red supergiant VY CMa with the SMA. The J = 11 → 10 transition of TiO in the v = 1 and 2 levels and the N = 9 → 8 transition in the v = 2 level of AlO were identified toward R Dor, the J = 11 → 10 line of TiO was identified in the v = 1 level toward IK Tau, and two transitions in the v = 1 and 2 levels of AlO were identified toward VY CMa. The newly derived high vibrational temperature of TiO and AlO in R Dor of 1800 ± 200 K and prior measurements of the angular extent confirm that the majority of the emission is from a region within ≲2R ⋆ of the central star. A full radiative transfer analysis of AlO in R Dor yielded a fractional abundance of ∼3% of the solar abundance of Al. From a similar analysis of TiO a fractional abundance of ∼78% of the solar abundance of Ti was found. The observations provide indirect evidence that TiO is present in a rotating disk close to the star. Further observations in the ground and excited vibrational levels are needed to determine whether AlO, TiO, and TiO2 are seeds of the Al2O3 dust in R Dor, and perhaps in the gravitationally bound dust shells in other AGB stars with low mass-loss rates.

The abundance of S- and Si-bearing molecules in O-rich circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars.

We aim to determine the abundances of SiO, CS, SiS, SO, and SO2 in a large sample of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) envelopes covering a wide range of mass loss rates to investigate the potential role that these molecules could play in the formation of dust in these environments. We surveyed a sample of 30 oxygen-rich AGB stars in the λ 2 mm band using the IRAM 30m telescope. We performed excitation and radiative transfer calculations based on the large velocity gradient (LVG) method to model the observed lines of the molecules and to derive their fractional abundances in the observed envelopes. We detected SiO in all 30 targeted envelopes, as well as CS, SiS, SO, and SO2 in 18, 13, 26, and 19 sources, respectively. Remarkably, SiS is not detected in any envelope with a mass loss rate below 10-6 M⊙ yr-1, whereas it is detected in all envelopes with mass loss rates above that threshold. From a comparison with a previous, similar study on C-rich sources, it becomes evident that the fractional abundances of CS and SiS show a marked differentiation between C-rich and O-rich sources, being two orders of magnitude and one order of magnitude more abundant in C-rich sources, respectively, while the fractional abundance of SiO turns out to be insensitive to the C/O ratio. The abundance of SiO in O-rich envelopes behaves similarly to C-rich sources, that is, the denser the envelope the lower its abundance. A similar trend, albeit less clear than for SiO, is observed for SO in O-rich sources. The marked dependence of CS and SiS abundances on the C/O ratio indicates that these two molecules form more efficiently in C- than O-rich envelopes. The decline in the abundance of SiO with increasing envelope density and the tentative one for SO indicate that SiO and possibly SO act as gas-phase precursors of dust in circumstellar envelopes around O-rich AGB stars.

Wind morphology around cool evolved stars in binaries

Context. The late evolutionary phase of low- and intermediate-mass stars is strongly constrained by their mass-loss rate, which is orders of magnitude higher than during the main sequence. The wind surrounding these cool expanded stars frequently shows nonspherical symmetry, which is thought to be due to an unseen companion orbiting the donor star. The imprints left in the outflow carry information about the companion and also the launching mechanism of these dust-driven winds. Aims. We study the morphology of the circumbinary envelope and identify the conditions of formation of a wind-captured disk around the companion. Long-term orbital changes induced by mass loss and mass transfer to the secondary are also investigated. We pay particular attention to oxygen-rich, that is slowly accelerating, outflows in order to look for systematic differences between the dynamics of the wind around carbon and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Methods. We present a model based on a parametrized wind acceleration and a reduced number of dimensionless parameters to connect the wind morphology to the properties of the underlying binary system. Thanks to the high performance code MPI-AMRVAC, we ran an extensive set of 72 three-dimensional hydrodynamics simulations of a progressively accelerating wind propagating in the Roche potential of a mass-losing evolved star in orbit with a main sequence companion. The highly adaptive mesh refinement that we used, enabled us to resolve the flow structure both in the immediate vicinity of the secondary, where bow shocks, outflows, and wind-captured disks form, and up to 40 orbital separations, where spiral arms, arcs, and equatorial density enhancements develop. Results. When the companion is deeply engulfed in the wind, the lower terminal wind speeds and more progressive wind acceleration around oxygen-rich AGB stars make them more prone than carbon-rich AGB stars to display more disturbed outflows, a disk-like structure around the companion, and a wind concentrated in the orbital plane. In these configurations, a large fraction of the wind is captured by the companion, which leads to a significant shrinking of the orbit over the mass-loss timescale, if the donor star is at least a few times more massive than its companion. In the other cases, an increase of the orbital separation is to be expected, though at a rate lower than the mass-loss rate of the donor star. Provided the companion has a mass of at least a tenth of the mass of the donor star, it can compress the wind in the orbital plane up to large distances. Conclusions. The grid of models that we computed covers a wide scope of configurations: We vary the terminal wind speed relative to the orbital speed, the extension of the dust condensation region around the cool evolved star relative to the orbital separation, and the mass ratio, and we consider a carbon-rich and an oxygen-rich donor star. It provides a convenient frame of reference to interpret high-resolution maps of the outflows surrounding cool evolved stars.
