L10-PtCo and L12-Pt3Co Intermetallics for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: The Influence of Composition and Structure on Properties.

Pt-based intermetallics are regarded as highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, Pt-based intermetallics with different Pt: M atomic ratios have different atomic arrangements and crystal structures, which will change the electronic structure and coordination environment of Pt, thus affecting the electrocatalytic activity. In this work, we prepared L12-Pt3Co and L10-PtCo intermetallic catalysts by modulating the molar ratio of Pt and Co precursors using a thermal annealing method. The mass activity (MA) of L10-PtCo is 0.52 A mg-1 Pt at 0.9 V, which is 1.44 times larger than that of L12-Pt3Co (0.36 A mg-1 Pt). In addition, the MA of L10-PtCo decreases by 17.31 % after 10,000 CV cycles, which is smaller than that of L12-Pt3Co (25.00 % loss in MA), showing excellent structural stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that compared to L12-Pt3Co, L10-PtCo has more electrons transferred to the Pt sites, which further optimizes the electronic structure of Pt and reduces the d-band center, leading to the increase of the electrocatalytic performance. This work provides new insights into the study of Pt-based intermetallics with different Pt: M ratios, which is helpful for the screening and preparation of high-performance Pt-based intermetallics.

Nanographenes are among the fastest‐growing materials used for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) thanks to their low cost, environmental friendliness, excellent electrical conductivity, and scalable synthesis. The perspective of replacing precious metal‐based electrocatalysts with functionalized graphene is highly desirable for reducing costs in energy conversion and storage systems. Generally, the enhanced ORR activity of the nanographenes is typically deemed to originate from the heteroatom doping effect, size effect, defects effect, and/or their synergistic effect. All these factors can efficiently modify the charge distribution on the sp2‐conjugated carbon framework, bringing about optimized intermediate adsorption and accelerated electron transfer steps during ORR. In this review, the fundamental chemical and physical properties of nanographenes are first discussed about ORR applications. Afterward, the role of doping, size, defects, and their combined influence in boosting nanographenes’ ORR performance is introduced. Finally, significant challenges and essential perspectives of nanographenes as advanced ORR electrocatalysts are highlighted.

Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalytic Performance of Nickel‐Nitrogen‐Carbon Catalysts through Coordination Environment Engineering†

Comprehensive SummarySingle‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted significant attention due to their high atomic utilization and tunable coordination environment. However, the catalytic mechanisms related to the active center and coordination environment remain unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activities of NiN4, NiN3, NiN3H2, NiN4X, NiN3X, and NiN3H2X (X denotes axial ligand) through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study unveils two distinct reaction pathways for ORR and OER, involving proton‐electron pairs adsorbed from both the solution and the catalyst surface. The overpotential is the key parameter to evaluate the catalytic performance when proton‐electron pairs are adsorbed from the solution. NiN3 and NiN3H2 show promise as pH‐universal bifunctional electrocatalysts for both ORR and OER. On the other hand, when proton‐electron pairs are adsorbed from the catalyst surface, the reaction energy barrier becomes the crucial metric for assessing catalytic activity. Our investigation reveals that NiN3H2 consistently exhibits optimal ORR activity across a wide pH range, regardless of the source of proton‐electron pair (solvent or catalyst surface).

Surface segregation on Ag@MNi (M = Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru) core–shell nanocrystals for enhancing the oxygen reduction performance

Synthesis of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has received wide attention due to their sluggish kinetics, which limits the development and application of fuel cell technique. In this work, we report a versatile synthetic approach to prepare a series of small-sized Ag@MNi (M = Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru) nanocrystals with core–shell structures by a simple solvothermal method. According to characterization analysis, surface segregation of Pd was proved in the outermost layer with the Pd-rich shell layer, which can regulate the adsorption energy of *OH. Electrochemical results show that the onset potential and half-wave potential of Ag@PdNi nanocrystals (Ag@PdNi NCs) are 1.005 and 0.913 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively, with a Tafel slope of 55.31 mV dec-1 and strong ORR catalytic durability, which is similar to Ag@MNi (M = Pt, Rh, Ru) NCs and slightly higher than that of PdAg alloy nanoparticles (PdAg alloy NPs), PdNi alloy nanoparticles (PdNi alloy NPs), commercial Pd black and even commercial Pt/C, in alkaline medium. Density Functional (DFT) calculations show that the presence of Agcore effectively promotes the segregation of Pd atoms to the outer shell surface, where Ni provides better segregated substitution sites for Pd, which significantly improves the ORR activity and durability due to the electronic synergistic effect between Agcore nuclei and Pdshell can reduce the adsorption strength of OHads.

Wet-chemical synthesis of Co3Mo3C-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions

Abstract In recent years, efforts have been made to adapt secondary metal–air batteries for practical rechargeable applications through the development of bifunctional catalysts, which are highly active in both oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Molybdenum carbides, known for their high chemical durability and electrical conductivity, are being investigated as electrode materials for hydrogen evolution reactions in water electrolysis. In this study, we found a new wet chemical synthesis of cobalt-molybdenum-based carbides. Especially, the synthesized Mn-doped Co₃(Mo₀.₉Mn₀.₁)₃C catalyst gave a remarkable activity for both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction, showing significant potential for the advancement of metal–air batteries as secondary batteries.

MOF-derived three-dimensional porous dodecahedral structured bimetallic Mn/Co-C-N composite for high-performance durable oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts

Investigating high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is one of the most effective methods for addressing the sluggish kinetics at the fuel cell cathode. Bimetallic three-dimensional porous materials have garnered significant attention due to their diverse structures, large specific surface area and synergistic catalytic effects. Herein, we synthesized a bimetallic three-dimensional porous dodecahedral structure, Mn/Co-C-N, derived from MOF using a straightforward approach. Experimental reults confirm that the strategic incorporation of Mn enhances the electrocatalytic activity for ORR. Meanwhile, the synergistic effects of Mn and Co, as well as the advantages of the dodecahedral structure for expediting electron transfer, all contribute to the exceptional ORR performance. Arc testing in an alkaline electrolyte reveals that the initial potential (Eonset) and the half-wave potential (E1/2) are 0.89 V and 0.80 V, closely approximating those of commercial Pt/C (20 wt%). Following 10 000 stability test cycles, the half-wave potential exhibits a mere 8 mV change, confirming its remarkable stability.

Mechanistic Study of Highly Active Bifunctional Double-Atom Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions.

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) can be very effective for catalyzing both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we present theoretical evidence of a new class of highly active DACs, namely, the double-atom embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene sheet 2M-N-C (M = Mn, Fe) on the basis of density functional theory calculations. Importantly, we find that the double active sites of 2M-N-C DACs entail an unconventional catalytic reaction pathway for ORR and OER. We also show that the local coordination environment of the active sites can significantly affect the stability and oxygen catalytic activity of 2M-N-C DACs. In particular, MnFe-N-C DAC not only exhibits good stability but also possesses outstanding bifunctional ORR/OER catalytic activity with the potential difference (ΔE) between the OER and ORR as low as 0.34 V, notably lower than most bifunctional electrocatalysts reported in the literature. This finding suggests a new strategy toward the design of stable and highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for both ORR/OER.

Straightforward Synthesis Methodology for Obtaining Excellent ORR Electrocatalysts From Biomass Residues Through a One Pot‐High Temperature Treatment Approach

AbstractMaterials prepared from biomass residues are potential candidates to substitute the Pt‐based commercial electrocatalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although some investigations have reported activity and durability comparable to Pt/C using biomass‐derived catalysts based on Fe─N─C sites, it remains a challenge to decrease the environmental impact of the production of these materials. A straightforward procedure is developed to obtain excellentORR electrocatalysts from biomass residues which requires a single high‐temperature treatment. The final washing step is avoided by optimizing the initial amount of Fe precursor (FeC2O4). Besides the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles, a highly dispersed Fe phase is detected by High Angle Annular Dark Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X‐Ray Spectroscopy (HAADF‐STEM‐XEDS) analysis as well as graphitic carbon structures. The best performance for almond shell‐based electrocatalysts is achieved for the sample containing 4.6 wt. % of Fe. The procedure developed is also applied to oceanic posidonia and eucalyptus residues, also showing excellent ORR behavior. The best sample is studied in a primary Zn‐air battery (ZAB) obtaining a maximum power density of 59 mW cm−2 and 755 mAh gZn−1 capacity.

Boosting Zn-air battery performance: Fe single-atom anchored on F, N co-doped carbon nanosheets for efficient oxygen reduction

Sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics limit the development of metal-air batteries and fuel cells, hindering overall energy conversion efficiency. Therefore, significant research has focused on cost-effective, highly active, and exceptionally stable non-precious metal ORR electrocatalysts. This study presents the synthesis of a nanohybrid material called Fe SAs/FN-CNs. It is made up of single iron atoms embedded in ultrathin porous carbon nanosheets that are co-doped with F and N. The synthesis process involves an easy one-step pyrolysis technique without additional post-treatment. The Fe SAs/FN-CNs material is designed to function as an effective zinc-air battery ORR electrocatalyst. Based on their distinctive components and structure, the optimal Fe SAs/FN-CNs exhibit outstanding catalytic efficiency and long-lasting performance in the alkaline ORR. They have an onset potential (Eonset) of 0.95 V, a half-wave potential (E0.5) of 0.85 V, a kinetic current density (JK) of 20.49 mA cm−2 at 0.8 V, and a diffusion-limited current (Jd) of 6.2 mA cm−2. In addition, a Zn-air battery made using homemade Fe SAs/FN-CNs demonstrated a power density of 197 mW cm−2, a specific capacitance of 813.5 mAh g−1, and exceptional stability. It outperformed the commercial Pt/C by operating continuously for over 147 hours at 10 mA/cm² (discharge-charge). The Fe SAs/FN-CNs nanohybrid electrocatalyst shows great potential as an electrocatalyst for various metal-air batteries.

Hybrid Nanoalloy‐Cluster‐Single Atom Sites Based Aerophilic Carbon Fiber Membranes as Binder‐Free Cathodes for Ultra‐Long‐Life Zn‐air Batteries

AbstractHigh‐efficient and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) are desirable to Zn‐air batteries (ZABs). However, most of catalysts in powder form with sole active sites remain challenging in achieving the satisfactory bifunctional catalysis and suffer from peeling off during the long‐term operation. Herein, hybrid CoFe active sites are constructed containing nanoalloys (≈10 nm), clusters (< 2 nm), and single atoms on aerophilic carbon fiber membranes as binder‐free air cathodes for ultra‐long‐life ZABs. In particular, the high air‐permeability of membranes (0.2 s) can prevent the active sites from blocking by O2 bubbles and promote the mass transfer. The theoretical and experimental results confirm that the hydrophilic CoFe2O4/CoFeOOH sites reconstructed on the surface of CoFe nanoalloys are mainly responsible for OER. While for single atoms and clusters on nitrogen (N)‐doped carbon matrix, they play a synergetic role in optimizing the adsorption energy to enhance ORR activity. Thus, the as‐prepared catalysts exhibit an ultra‐low ORR/OER potential gap (0.64 V). When further assembled as freestanding air‐electrodes, it exhibits an outstanding cycling lifespan of 1200 and 155 h in liquid‐ and quasi‐solid‐state ZABs respectively, which are fivefold and twofold higher than those of powder‐based cathodes (240/67 h).

Mass Transportation Facilitated Porous Fe/Co Dual‐Site Catalytic Cathodes for Ultrahigh‐Power‐Density Al–Air Fuel Cells

AbstractThe development of oxygen‐dependent fuel cells is frequently hindered by the high cost of cathode materials and the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It is thus crucial to explore low‐cost and high‐activity catalysts with accelerated mass transport. Here, a high‐throughput screening method is developed by integrating an explicit solvation model with machine learning potential‐based molecular dynamics simulations, which enables the efficient evaluation of a vast array of diverse diatomic combinations and ultimately identifying Fe–Co dual‐atomic sites as the optimal ORR electrocatalysts. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the diatomic Fe/Co sites loaded on 3D‐interconnected ordered macroporous carbon (FeCo‐3DMNC) is experimentally verified, achieving high ORR activity with half‐wave potentials of 0.806 V in acidic and 0.905 V in alkaline environments. Additionally, innovative hybrid acid/alkali aluminum–air fuel cells (hA/A‐AAFCs) incorporating FeCo‐3DMNC as the cathode catalyst demonstrate a notably high open‐circuit voltage of 2.72 V and a record‐breaking power density of 827 mW cm−2, significantly outperforming conventional alkaline aluminum–air fuel cells. This work marks a significant advancement by combining cutting‐edge computational screening with rigorous experimental validation to develop promising electrocatalysts, potentially paving the way for the advanced energy storage and conversion technologies.

Boosting electrocatalytic oxygen reduction of Fe-Co polyphthalocyanine via the synergy of metal component optimization and axial ligand modification

Conjugated metal polyphthalocyanine (MPPc) organic skeletons, a kind of novel porous materials containing inherent M−N4 highly active sites, are of great significance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, bimetallic Fe-Co phthalocyanine covalent polymers (denoted as FeCoPPc) were prepared as ORR electrocatalysts through a solvothermal process and subsequent oxidation treatment. Meanwhile, the effect of axial oxygen-containing ligands of metal centers on the catalytic kinetic processes was also investigated. Benefiting from the highly exposed bimetal active sites and the finely designed ligand structure, FeCoPPc with optimized Fe/Co ratio and ClO3− coordination (Fe0.9Co0.1PPc-ClO3) displayed an outstanding ORR electrocatalytic activity and superior durability compared to 20 % Pt/C, manifested by an onset potential of 0.986 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a half-wave potential of 0.923 V vs. RHE in a 0.1 M KOH solution. This work may guide the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts to regulate the catalytic activity.

Dual Fe/I Single-Atom Electrocatalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction and Wide-Temperature Quasi-Solid-State Zn-Air Batteries.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts are essential for widespread application of quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries (ZABs), but the well-known Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts (SACs) suffer from low activity and stability because of unfavorable strong adsorption of oxygenated intermediates. Herein, the study synthesizes dual Fe/I single atoms anchored on N-doped carbon nanorods (Fe/I-N-CR) via a metal-organic framework (MOF)-mediated two-step tandem-pyrolysis method. Atomic-level I doping modulates the electronic structure of Fe-Nx centers via the long-range electron delocalization effect. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of dual Fe/I single-atom sites and the structural merits of 1D nanorods, the Fe/I-N-CR catalyst shows excellent ORR activity and stability, superior to Pt/C and Fe or I SACs. When the Fe/I-N-CR is employed as cathode for quasi-solid-state ZABs, a high power density of 197.9mW cm-2 and an ultralong cycling lifespan of 280h at 20mA cm-2 are both achieved, greatly exceeding those of commercial Pt/C+IrO2 (119.1mW cm-2 and 47h). In addition, wide-temperature adaptability and superior stability from -40 to 60 °C are realized for the Fe/I-N-CR-based quasi-solid-state ZABs. This work provides a MOF-mediated two-step tandem-pyrolysis strategy to engineer high-performance dual SACs with metal/nonmetal centers for ORR and sustainable ZABs.

Nitrogen, Fluorine, and Phosphorus Tri‐Doped Porous Carbon with High Electrical Conductivity as an Excellent Metal‐Free Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

AbstractToday's oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) depends on the precious metal Pt‐based catalysts, limiting the large commercialization of promising energy conversion technologies such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal‐air batteries. Therefore, the rational design of low‐cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts for ORR is strongly desired. Herein, we report a porous carbon doped with nitrogen, fluorine, and phosphorus (N, F, P tri‐doped carbon) prepared via only a heating process using low‐cost glycine, ammonium fluoride, and phytic acid as precursors. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the existence of pyridinic‐N and the co‐existence of graphitic‐N and oxidized graphitic‐P, which can be active sites, with semi‐ionic C−F bonds highly boosting ORR activity. Remarkably, the resultant N, F, P tri‐doped carbon exhibited outstanding activity for the ORR with an onset potential comparable to that of commercial 20 wt % Pt/C catalyst, the half‐wave potential superior to that of the Pt/C catalyst, and the electron transfer number close to 4.

Molten Salt-Assisted Synthesis of Ferric Oxide/M-N-C Nanosheet Electrocatalysts for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Efficient, stable, and low-cost oxygen reduction catalysts are the key to the large-scale application of metal-air batteries. Herein, high-dispersive Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) with abundant oxygen vacancies uniformly are anchored on lignin-derived metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) hierarchical porous nanosheets as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts (Fe2O3/M-N-C, M═Cu, Mn, W, Mo) based on a general and economical KCl molten salt-assisted method. The combination of Fe with the highly electronegative O induces charge redistribution through the Fe-O-M structure, thereby reducing the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing substances. The coupling effect of Fe2O3 NPs with M-N-C expedites the catalytic activity toward ORR by promoting proton generation on Fe2O3 and transfer to M-N-C. Experimental and theoretical calculation further revealed the remarkable electronic structure evolution of the metal site during the ORR process, where the emission density and local magnetic moment of the metal atoms change continuously throughout their reaction. The unique layered porous structure and highly active M-N4 sites resulted in the excellent ORR activity of Fe2O3/Cu-N-C with the onset potential of 0.977V, which is superior to Pt/C. This study offers a feasible strategy for the preparation of non-noble metal catalysts and provides a new comprehension of the catalytic mechanism of M-N-C catalysts.

Reaction-driven restructuring of defective PtSe2 into ultrastable catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction.

PtM (M = S, Se, Te) dichalcogenides are promising two-dimensional materials for electronics, optoelectronics and gas sensors due to their high air stability, tunable bandgap and high carrier mobility. However, their potential as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is often underestimated due to their semiconducting properties and limited surface area from van der Waals stacking. Here we show an approach for synthesizing a highly efficient and stable ORR catalyst by restructuring defective platinum diselenide (DEF-PtSe2) through electrochemical cycling in an O2-saturated electrolyte. After 42,000 cycles, DEF-PtSe2 exhibited 1.3 times higher specific activity and 2.6 times higher mass activity compared with a commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst. Even after 126,000 cycles, it maintained superior ORR performance with minimal decay. Quantum mechanical calculations using hybrid density functional theory reveal that the improved performance is due to the synergistic contributions from Pt nanoparticles and the apical active sites on the DEF-PtSe2 surface. This work highlights the potential of DEF-PtSe2 as a durable electrocatalyst for ORR, offering insights into PtM dichalcogenide electrochemistry and the design of advanced catalysts.

Joule heating synthesis for single-atomic Fe sites on porous carbon spheres and armchair-type edge defect engineering dominated oxygen reduction reaction performance

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) embedded in heteroatom-doped carbon are the most promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts. However, the expeditious and facile synthesis of high-performance SACs with Fe-Nx active sites and identifying the role of edge-type defect at the atomic level in carbon support are essential but remain challenging. Herein, Joule heating is applied to anchor Fe single atoms on newly defect rich porous carbon spheres (Fe-N-DCSs) in milliseconds. Fe-N-DCSs achieves exceptional ORR performance, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.90 V and E1/2 lost of only 20 mV after 30,000 cycles in 0.1 M KOH, and superior Zn-air batteries performances. Density functional theory calculations establish that armchair-type edge defects decorated Fe-N4 active sites boost the desorption of OH* and diminish the ORR overpotential. This work not only provides a speedy route for the fabrication of SACs but also presents new insights into the excellent ORR activity.

Pt-decorated binary transition metal oxides (MnO-NiO, MnO-TiO2) for enhanced electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction and borohydride oxidation

Integrating transition metal oxides with precious metals is a strategic approach to designing cost-effective electrocatalysts with enhanced stability. Herein, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by microwave irradiation and anchored onto MnO and two binary metal oxides, MnO-NiO and MnO-TiO2, obtained by solid-state dispersion. Voltammetric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques evaluated their performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) in alkaline media. Tafel slope and the number of exchanged electrons, n, were determined to compare the three electrocatalysts’ performance for fuel cell applications. Pt/MnO-NiO revealed a Tafel slope of 177 mV dec–1 for ORR and an n value of ca. 4 and 3 e- for ORR and BOR, respectively. These findings demonstrate that Pt NPs supported on binary metal oxide supports, particularly Pt/MnO-NiO, are promising electrocatalysts for ORR and BOR in alkaline media, thus recommending their use in direct borohydride fuel cells.
