Ferrocene-Containing Tin(IV) Complexes Based on o-Benzoquinone and o-Iminobenzoquinone Ligands. Synthesis, Molecular Structure, and Electrochemical Properties.

The addition of different substituted o-benzoquinones and o-iminobenzoquinones to tin(II) bis(o-iminophenolates) of the types (Fc-IP)2SnII and (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnII (where Fc-IP is anion 2-(ferrocenylmethyleneamino)phenolate [Fc-C(H)═N(C6H4)O-] and Fc-4,6-IP is anion 2-(ferrocenylmethyleneamino)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate [Fc-C(H)═N(4,6-tBu-C6H2)O-]) in tetrahydrofuran leads to the oxidation of Sn(II) to Sn(IV) with formation of the corresponding tin(IV) catecholates (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnIV(3,6-Cat) (1), (Fc-IP)2SnIV(3,6-Cat) (2), (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnIV(4-Cl-3,6-Cat) (3), (Fc-IP)2SnIV(4-Cl-3,6-Cat) (4), (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnIV(4,5-Cl2-3,6-Cat) (5), and (Fc-IP)2SnIV(4,5-Cl2-3,6-Cat) (6) or the o-amidophenolates (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnIV(AP-Me) (7), (Fc-IP)2SnIV(AP-iPr) (8), and (Fc-4,6-IP)2SnIV(AP-iPr) (9). Here ligands 3,6-Cat, 4-Cl-3,6-Cat, and 4,5-Cl2-3,6-Cat are dianions 3,6-di-tert-butyl-, 4-chloro-3,6-di-tert-butyl-, and 4,5-dichloro-3,6-di-tert-butylcatecholates, respectively, and AP-Me and AP-iPr are dianions 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-o-amidophenolate and 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-amidophenolate, respectively. Complexes 1-9 have been characterized in detail by IR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and 1H, 13C, and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of tin(IV) complexes 5, 7, and 9 in the crystalline state were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes demonstrate a series of successive oxidations involving alternately catecholato/o-amidophenolato centers and ferrocenyl moieties. The relative oxidation potentials of these redox centers depend on the acceptor properties of the redox-active chelating O,O' or O,N ligand. An increase in the acceptor properties of redox-active o-quinonato-type ligands leads to an increase in the oxidation potentials of redox ligands as well as the following oxidation of ferrocenyl group(s). In two series of complexes, (Fc-4,6-L)2SnL' and (Fc-L)2SnL', where L' is AP-iPr, AP-Me, 3,6-Cat, 4-Cl-3,6-Cat, and 4,5-Cl2-3,6-Cat, a more pronounced convergence of the oxidation potentials of the redox-active o-quinonato ligand and ferrocenyl group occurs in the series (Fc-L)2SnL'.

Self-assembly of ferrocene-functionalized perylene bisimide bridging ligands with PtII corner to electrochemically active molecular squares.

Ferrocenyl-substituted N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)perylene bisimide ligands have been synthesized by the coupling reaction of hydroxyphenoxy-perylene bisimides with ferrocenyl carboxylic acids. By means of metallosupramolecular self-assembly, hitherto unprecedented multiredox active dendritic molecular squares with 16 ferrocene groups positioned in the bridging ligands are prepared from the perylene bispyridyl imide ligands and [Pt(dppp)][(OTf)(2)] (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphano)propane; OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) corner in high yield. The isolated metallosupramolecular squares were characterized by elemental analysis, (1)H, (31)P[(1)H] NMR, and UV/vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the ligands and squares are investigated by cyclic voltammetry as well as spectroelectrochemistry. The results obtained show that the redox behavior of ferrocene units is influenced by the square superstructure. Furthermore, redox titration of free ligand and corresponding molecular square with the one-electron oxidant thianthrenium pentachloroantimonate reveals that ferrocene groups in these structures may be oxidized completely by this oxidant, and highly charged species generated through oxidation of ferrocenyl groups in molecular square cause decomposition of the assembly due to pronounced Coulombic repulsion.

Electrochemical Control of Vesicle Formation with a Double-Tailed Cationic Surfactant Bearing Ferrocenyl Moieties

We already reported spontaneous vesicle formation in aqueous solutions of bis(11-ferrocenyl(undecyl))dimethylammonium bromide (11-BFDMA), a newly synthesized ferrocene-modified double-chain-type cationic surfactant (Kakizawa, Y.; Sakai, H.; Nishiyama, K.; Abe, M. Langmuir 1996, 12, 921.). We have examined in this study electrochemical control of vesicle formation of 11-BFDMA using the redox reaction of ferrocenyl groups in their molecules. Static light scattering, conductivity, and cyclic voltammogram measurements on the solution revealed that vesicles made of the reduced form of 11-BFDMA disintegrate and change into smaller molecular aggregates including micelles through oxidation of ferrocenyl groups. Oxidation of ferrocenyl groups also caused a remarkable decrease in the solubilization equilibrium constant for benzene in 11-BFDMA solution and release into the bulk phase of benzene solubilized in bimolecular layers of 11-BFDMA vesicles. Syntheses of Cationic Surfactants having Two Ferrocenylalkyl Chains.

Cationic surfactants containing twotail-chains with a ferrocenyl group at each tail end ina molecule, {Fc (CH2) n} 2N+ (CH3) 2Br- (n-BFDMA; n=5 and 11), were prepared from ω-bromoalkanoicacid through five reaction steps. The intermediates and the products were characterized by use of IR, 1H NMR, Mass spectra, and elemental analysis. Aggregation states of 11-BFDMA changed drastically by the oxidation of ferrocenyl groups. Moreover, the spontaneous vesicle formation was observed in the aqueous solution of reduced 11-BFDMA above the critical micelle concentration.
