Effect of Violence on Nigerian Adolescents’ Academic Performance: Implication for Counselling

The study investigates the effect of violence on Nigerian adolescents’ academic performance. Three research questions and hypotheses formed the guide for the study. The study adopted a causal research design. The population of the study covered all 174 secondary schools in Ovia Northeast local Government of Edo State, Purposive and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting 20 adolescents each from the 15 schools which form the sample of 300 adolescents. Mean and standard deviation were used in analyzing data collected on the research questions while a t-test was used in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 confidence level using SPSS Version 20. The results revealed that violence, gender and family type have a significant influence on the academic performance of adolescents’ students’ in Ovia Northeast Local Government of Edo State. The implication for counseling is that the counselor should in collaboration with authorities’ war the perpetrator of violence as it is an unacceptable behaviour and as such should not be a codon. It was recommended among others that there is need for adequate counselling by trained counsellors for stakeholders, the victim, the perpetrator, and the general public that violence, gender, and family type have significant influence on adolescents on the academic performance in Ovia Northeast local Government of Edo State.

An Assessment of Social Well-being of the Elderly in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria

The paper focused on the Assessment of Social Well-being of the Elderly in Ovia North-East Local Government Area Edo State. It specifically examined social supports for the elderly; it accessed how the family members render social supports for the elderly; it accessed the relevance of the informal caregivers to the elderly; it also investigated how neglect affect the well-being of the elderly and examined the causes of neglect of the elderly. It was found that a majority of people have good intention towards the welfare of the elderly. The main source of income and care of the elderly was mainly from their family members. The various forms of informal social support and certain demographic characteristics predicted the wellbeing of the elderly. The elderly would prefer a combination of both formal and informal social support. It is recommended that all stakeholders involved in the welfare of the elderly should deliberately make adequate efforts to adopt a proactive approach rather than reactive approach in the health of the elderly persons. Effect of crude oil spillage on some soil physical properties within Ovia North East Local Government in Edo State.

The release of crude oil into the environment by oil spill is currently receiving a worldwide attention due to the high risk it portends to the health of the environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of crude oil spillage on some soil physical properties. Eight (8) soil samples were collected from eight sampling locations around the flow station at Gelegele River, Edo State. The total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) recorded were above the 1,000 mg/kg permissible limit by World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The physiochemical studies were carried out according to the methods of Association of Official Analytical Chemist (A.O.A.C) for the determination of the soil physicochemical parameters. The physiochemical parameters obtained were pH (6.01 ± 0.02 – 6.49 ± 0.07), Electrical Conductivity (EC) (416.00 ± 10.70 – 656.45 ± 11.65) mS/m, Carbon (2.13 ± 0.03 – 3.70 ± 0.01a) %, Nitrogen (0.04 ± 0.01 – 1.67 ± 0.02ab) %, Phosphorus (1.33 ± 0.06 – 2.91 ± 0.04ab)%, Water holding capacity (WHC) (82.48 ± 0.82 – 92.48 ± 0.82) %, Bulk density (0.70 ± 0.02ab – 2.79 ± 0.05) %. There is a current concern of environmental pollution and this study showed that the area of study currently of concern that needs to be monitored.

Rice Price Differentials in Rural Markets of Edo State, Nigeria

The dispersion in price of rice across different markets in exclusive location, and the astronomic annual increase of 30% in the past 7-8 years in Edo state cannot be attributed mainly to transport costs. Consequently, the study examined spatial price variation of rice vis-à-vis beans, garri, and palm oil as typically consumed substitutes/complements food commodities from a segment of 286 food commodity marketers in Ovia North-East Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo state, Nigeria using the spatial lag model of price-cost of transport data set. The outcomes of the descriptive data showed that the price of 1Kg rice under random test became N1576.82. The consequences of Moran's I (3.652) and Lagrange multiplier exams (10.753) for spatial lag, and Moran's I (0.175) and Geary's c check (0.460) for spatial autocorrelation suggest evidence of clustering in the spatial price of rice at the nearby markets and spatial price of rice between markets than might be under a random experiment. However, the results confirmed no spatial structure, no spatial dependence in the error term, nor spatial dependence within the costs of garri, beans and palm oil. The effects of the spatial lag model showed a mean price of 1kg of rice as N1597.77 with an average total effect of 0.406 comprising 0.274 direct effect and 0.132 indirect effects. Hence, the own-market price of rice in the study area is affected by the across-market price in the nearby markets, in addition to the cost of transportation from market of purchase.

Evaluation of Water Quality within and around Flood Prone area and Dumpsite Environment in Part of Benin Metropolitan city Southern, Nigeria

The study was carried out in Egor local government area, Dumpsite in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo state. The study areas are located between latitudes of 6°27'27.8''N to 6°27'44.6''N and longitudes of 5°35'58.7″E to 5°36'16.8''E in Egor local government area and the dumpsite is located with a latitude of 6°22´1.2''N to 6°27´51.3″N and longitudes of 5°36'42.3''E to 5°36´2.1″E in Ovia North-East local government area. A total of five (5) water samples were collected from an existing borehole at different locations within the study area. Physiochemical test, Major anion and cation concentration was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Microbiological Parameters for all the water samples was also determined. The following are the physiochemical parameters, major cations and anions that was analysed from all the water samples collected: pH, EC, TDS, Na+, Ca+, Mg2+, Cl-, NO3- , HNO3- , HNO3- , SO42- , Cr2-, Cd-, Ni-, and Pb2+ and the Microbiological parameter analysed for all the water samples are Coliform and E. Coli. The Microbiological parameter analysed for are Coliform and E. Coli as shown in Table 1. The results reveals that the study areas have average value of pH (4.89) which is below the WHO (2011) and NSQW (2007) standard permissible limit of 6.5-8.5 and this indicates that the water is slightly acidic probably due to the presence of decayed organic matter in high amounts and mineral acids produced during hydrolysis. The average values of E.C (121.86μS/cm), TDS (46.52mg/l), Na+ (1.48mg/l), Cl- (53.85mg/l), NO3- (1.17mg/l), HNO3- (0.39mg/l), SO42- (0.12mg/l), Cr2- (0.031), and Ni- (0.0074) conforms with the WHO (2011) and NSQW (2007) standard for drinking water expect some physiochemical parameters : Ca2+, Mg2+ Cd-, Pb2+, E.Coli and Coliform which has average values (4.49mg/l, 3.10mg/l, 0.027mg/l, 0.016mg/l, 1.36 X 103 (cfu/100mL)and 1.06 X 103 (cfu/mL) which do not conform with the WHO (2011) and NSQW (2007) for drinking water because of many factors and anthropogenic activities on the environment which contaminated the groundwater of the study areas. The results analysed from the three-study area reveals that the physiochemical parameters and microbiological parameters show similar trend. The water sample collected in the premises of University of Benin is more acidic compare to other water samples from the other locations. This probably due to the presence of decayed organic matter in high amounts and mineral acids produced during hydrolysis.

An Alternative Source of Water Supply: Design and Construction of Rainwater Harvesting System for Domestic Use in Ovia-North East Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria

Demand for freshwater is on the increase due mainly to population growth and urbanisation. Many of the water systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population have become stressed. Rivers, lakes and aquifers are drying up or becoming too polluted to use. Hence, there is need for alternative water supply sources. With this in mind, there has been a growing attention on the potentials of rainwater harvesting as an alternative source of water supply. In this study, rainwater harvesting (RWH) system was designed for a 5-membered household in Ovia-North East LGA of Benin City, Nigeria. However, a prototype of the RWH system (mini system) was constructed to ascertain its suitability. It consist of a corrugated metal (zinc) sheet catchment of 6m 2 , a collection system made of PVC pipes and a filter with granular activated carbon and fine sand and two locally available plastic storage drums having capacity of 100L each. Rainwater samples were collected from the storage drums and analysed for their suitability in domestic purposes. These samples were analysed for thirteen parameters, namely; pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Temperature, Turbidity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Chloride (Cl), Ammonium Nitrogen (NH 4 N), Nitrite (NO 2 - ), Nitrate (NO 3 - ), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu) and Coliforms Count (Col.) using standard methods. Results revealed that with a roof area of 40m 2 , 75m 3 reservoirs or tanks capacity will be required for dry period. It was observed that all parameters analysed were within acceptable limits for drinking water quality except for coliform bacteria. Although minimum level of coliform bacteria was observed, however pure water should be free from all kinds of coliforms, thus it is recommended that the addition of a disinfectant to the harvested rainwater is required to further improve it quality for domestic use. Also proper maintenance of the catchment area and storage containers could eliminate the presence of coliform bacteria and make rainwater safe for domestic purposes. This study has revealed that the harvested rainwater is of good quality and that the amount of rainwater to be stored with a 75m 3 reservoirs or tanks will be more than enough for a 5-membered household to meet its domestic use throughout the whole dry periods of the year. Antibiogram profiles and virulence factors associated with water-borne gram-negative bacteria from Ogbese river, Edo State, Nigeria

Surface waters such as flowing rivers, fresh water lakes and hand dug wells are the major sources of water for most rural dwellers in Nigeria. These are often consumed without testing their potability. This study was conducted to assess the bacteriological quality of surface water sampled from five (5) sampling locations on Ogbese river in Ogbese and Olumoye towns, Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State. Water samples were collected in duplicates from the sampling locations during the months of June 2018 to February 2019. Bacteriological analysis of the water samples was conducted using the membrane filtration technique and isolates identified by standard cultural and genomic procedures. Disc diffusion technique was utilized to determine the antibiotic sensitivity profiles of the identified bacteria. Other microbiological analysis which comprised of screening for enterotoxin production, invasiveness, hemolysin production and serum resistance, which are all virulence factors were performed using relevant methods. The total heterotrophic bacterial count varied from 1.0 ± 32.0 ×104𝑐𝑓𝑢/𝑚𝑙 and 1.0 ±0.12 ×104𝑐𝑓𝑢/𝑚𝑙 to 9.7 ± 2.23 ×104𝑐𝑓𝑢/𝑚𝑙. The total coliform count ranged from 0.1 ± 0.02 ×102𝑐𝑓𝑢/𝑚𝑙 to 5.5 ± 0.05 ×102𝑐𝑓𝑢/𝑚𝑙. The observed differences between the mean heterotrophic bacterial and coliform counts recorded for Ogbese and Olumoye sampling points was significant (P< 0.05). The identified bacterial isolates included; Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella enterica, Vibrio cholerae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Both E. coli (60.0%) and E. cloacae (60.0%) were the most frequently isolated water borne isolates cultured from Ogbese sampling point. All E. coli and S. enterica isolates exhibited sensitivity towards ciprofloxacin and streptomycin. All S. flexneri isolates were invasive and serum resistant. There is an urgent need by relevant Governmental and Non –Governmental agencies to conduct advocacy programs targeted at these communities on the necessity of treating and disinfecting abstracted water sourced directly from the water body prior to drinking.

The use of electrical resistivity tomography to classify the Earth’s subsurface in Ugbogiobo Community, Edo State, South-South Nigeria

Electrical Resistivity investigations using Two-dimensional (2-D) geophysical investigation was carried out in Ugbogiobo community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. This was done to have a good idea of subsurface lithology in the study area. Twenty-four (24) traverse lines were profiled in two locations using a rectangular grid format with electrode spacing of 10 m with a horizontal length of 300 m and 200 m respectively using the Wenner Alpha configuration as a survey technique. The 2-D Electrical Resistivity data was processed using RES2DINV software. From the results obtained it is evident that over a depth of between 5 m to 56 m for all the profiled lines there is composition of Alluvium and clayey soil at the top surface with low resistivity values at a depth below 10 m with resistivity values ranging between 50 Ωm–800 Ωm. While Shale, Slate and Sandstone occurred at a depth of between 13 m to 25 m with resistivity values ranging between 1000 Ωm–3000 Ωm. Above a depth of 30 m revealed limestone and thick clay with resistivity values raging between 5000 Ωm– 30000 Ωm.

MICROBIAL ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT ON UTEKON RIVER IN OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

The microbial analysis of industrial effluent on Utekon River in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State was investigated in this study. The study assesses the extent of pollution of the water due to discharged effluent from the industries in the area. The bacteriological analysis of water samples collected from five different stations (A-E) revealed the presence of bacteria genera such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermis, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella sp and Streptococcus sp. The most widely distributed bacteria was Escherichia coli indicating faecal pollution of the river. The total bacteria count was observed to range from 12× 103 – 83 × 103 cfu/ml. The highest bacteria count 83 × 103 cfu/ml was recorded in sample B1 obtained from station 2, which was the point of discharge of effluent. The total coliform count was observed to range from 12 – 79. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed that the most resistant and susceptible bacteria isolates were Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The most susceptible bacteria isolate was Streptococcus sp. Due to negative impact of the effluent discharge in Utekon River it will be necessary if policies are provided to ensure proper treatment of waste effluent before discharge into the river in other to preserve the safety of the river and conservation of the aquatic life. Thus helping the sustainability of the aquatic life of the river and preventing hazardous threat this polluted river may pose to human health who consume this aquatic life.

Correction to: Assessment of the physico-chemical characteristics and elemental properties of water and sediments from Owan river in Edo State, Nigeria

The water quality of Owan river, a very important river in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria was assessed. American Public Health Association (APHA) standard analytical procedures for water and sediment samples were used. Elemental composition of the sediment samples were determined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDXRF). Results obtained were statistically analysed (basic descriptive). In water, concentrations (mg/L) of nitrate—(2.65–21.55), sulphate—(58.6–80.0), calcium —(3.21–8.60), dissolved oxygen (5.5–6.53), total hardness (12.60–42.0), alkalinity (32.0–50.5), Cd (0.01), Cr (0.1–0.15), As (0.01–0.05), and Zn (1.4–2.04), electrical conductivity (32.0–38.0 µS/cm) and pH (6.10–6.85) were within environmental standards. However, Fe and Pb were slightly above the standards. In the sediment samples, Al, Si, Fe, and K are the most abundant elements. The highest values were detected as follows: Al—8.09 (SW7), Si—25.08 (SW5), Fe—16.72 (SW6), and K—2.1 (SW7). Urgent checks and monitoring by relevant agencies, government representatives, public health practitioners, and community leaders are required.

Geophysical Investigation Using 3-Dimensional Grid-Formation for Subsurface Lithology Characterization (A Case Study of Ovia North East, Edo State, South South Nigeria)

Geophysical investigations using three-dimensional (3D) grid formation was carried out in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria for subsurface lithology characterisation so as to generate a comprehensive basemap of the study area. Twelve (12) traverses in form of a rectangular grid were occupied for the 2D Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) using the Wenner array. The 2D were all collated to form the 3D grid. The 2D Electrical Resistivity data was processed by the inversion of the 2D apparent resistivity data using the DIPRO software to generate the 2D inverted resistivity section while the 3D inverted resistivity model was done by inverting all the twelve traverses using 3DEarthimager software to model the 3D cube. The results of the 2D ERI revealed three (03) to five (05) resistivity structures across the twelve traverses indicating clay/clayey sand, sand and sandstone on a 200 and 300 m lateral distance and corresponding depth of 39.6 and 57.3 m across each traverses. Resistivity values generally varies from 16.8 – 45302 Ωm across Traverse 1 – 12. The layer horizontal depth slices of the 3D inverted resistivity distribution are in six layers, which are; 0 - 5 m, 5 – 10.8 m, 10.8 – 17.4 m, 17.4 – 25 m, 25 – 33.7 m and 33.7 – 43.8 m. The 3D inverted resistivity model within the study area covered lateral plane (the roll axis), 300 m, in the x plane (the pitch axis), 200 m lateral distance was covered and in the depth plane (the yaw axis), a maximum depth of 66 m is imaged. The inverted 3D Resistivity values generally vary from 189 - 6149 Ωm across the study area. The resistivity structures delineated from the 3D model are clayey sand and sand.

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED USING CITRUS SINENSIS PEEL EXTRACT AGAINST PATHOGENS ISOLATED FROM DISEASED TOMATO (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.)

Among all the noble nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles have gained boundless interests because of their unique properties such as chemical stability, catalytic and most important antimicrobial activities. This study was carried out to investigate the antibacterial activity of phytosynthesized silver nanoparticles against bacteria pathogens isolated from diseased tomato plant leaves. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Citrus peel extract and the formation of nanoparticles was monitored using spectrophotometer. Diseased tomato plant leaves were obtained from a farm located at Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria for the isolation of bacteria pathogens. The isolated bacteria include Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp. Antibacterial testing using the phytosynthesized silver nanoparticles was carried out via the agar well diffusion method on the test isolates. Zones of inhibition of 10 and 8 mm were obtained for Enterobacter and Pseudomonas species respectively by 100 µl nanoparticles treatment after 24 hours of incubation. This indicated that the phytosynthesized silver nanoparticles have antibacterial activity against the bacterial pathogens. Further studies should be carried out to determine the mode of action of silver nanoparticles and the potential of the test nanoparticles in plant disease management. The potential of members of the genus, Enterobacter as causative agents of plant diseases should be further investigated.

Helminthiases are regarded as important public health problem in tropical Africa. This study conducted from November 2016 to April 2017 evaluated the helminths status of consented 372 pre-school and school-age (4 – 14years) children from three primary schools in Ovbiogie, Oluku and Ekiadolor community, Ovia NorthEast Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were administered to obtain demographic data and Kato Katz techniques used for laboratory analysis of the stool samples. The overall prevalence of infections was 34.1%, corresponding to 17.7% of Ascaris lumbricoides, 11.2% of hookworm and 5.1% of Trichuris trichiura. Males were more infected (35.1%) than females (33.1%). Age group 4 – 7 years had the highest prevalence of helminthes, while age 8-10years had the least prevalence. The commonest combination of helminthes observed was that of A. lumbricoides and hookworm with rate of 2.4%. Parents occupation notably farming (with the highest mean intensity of 145.3 ± 53.9) greatly influence helminthiasis in the study area. Open defecation (12.3%) was significantly associated with hookworm infection. Mean intensity for A. lumbricoides (131.2 ± 49.5) and hookworm (80.0 ± 38.5 epg) infections was higher in females than males. The mean intensities of infections varied among the different age groups (P<0.05). The highest mean intensity for A. lumbricoides (137 ± 78.3 epg), ookworm (73.6 ± 27.9 epg) and T. trichiura (57.6 ± 21.4epg) was among pupils who used pit latrines. This study has demonstrated that helminthiasis is of public health importance among school age children in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. There is need for health education intervention, periodic deworming, adequate toilet facilities and adequate environmental sanitation for effective control.

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites amongst selected age groups within Okada, South –South Nigeria.

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites from volunteered individuals in the study site. A total of 300 stool samples, comprising 150 females and 150 males were collected randomly from the study population in Ovia North-East Local Government Area in Edo State, aged between 1 and 60 years. The stool samples were aseptically collected and examined using both direct smear method and formol ether sedimentation techniques to determine the individual parasite load of the sampled population. The age group of 16-20 had the highest number of participants 102(34%) while the age group of 6-10, 51-55 and 56-60 had the least number of participants of 3(1%) respectively. Out of the 300 stool samples examined 87, (29%) were positive with intestinal parasites while 213(71%) were negative, not having any intestinal parasitic infection However the age group of 11-15(N=10) and 31-35(N=10) had the highest prevalence rate of 11.5%, while the lowest prevalence (1%) was found in individuals of ages 41-60 years. There was no intestinal parasites found among the individuals below11 years of age.. Of the 150 male candidates examined, 57 (65.5%) were infected with intestinal parasites. On the other hand, their female counterparts had a total prevalence of 34.5%. A total number of six parasitic species were isolated from the fecal specimens. These were Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercolaris, Entamoeba coli, Hookworms and Entamoeba histolytica. Ascaris lumbricoides had the highest prevalence rate (12%), while Trichuris trichiura and Strongyloides stercolaris had the least prevalence rate (1%) respectively. The intestinal parasite infection and age were negatively correlated and there was a significant difference between the male and female infection rates (p<0.05).

Effects of land-use types on soil quality indices in ughoton community in Ovia north-east local government area, Edo state, Nigeria

The present study was conducted to examine the effects of different land-use types on soil quality indices. Surface soils were collected at 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depth respectively from three land-use types: Cassava field, Oil palm, and Banana plantation. Samples were subjected to physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses using standard methods, and the result were subjected to descriptive statics. The extent of change in soil quality was assessed using soil quality indices as an index for soil fertility management. The result showed that oil palm plantation was highest in soil quality evaluated as compared to Banana and Cassava field. The fertility differences observed across the land use types were due to inherent soil properties such that farming practices that ensure accumulation of organic matter need to be encouraged in order to improve soil productivity. It is recommended that soil fertility management should be site-specific to enhance optimum yield and productivity.

Parasitic endohelminths of tree frogs from two rainforest habitats in Edo State, Nigeria

Tree frogs are generally regarded as arboreal frogs and those associated with water during their breeding season as aquatic/arboreal frogs. Obazuwa Wetlands and Ikpako Riparian Habitat are both located in Ovia North East and Ovia South West Local Government Areas of Edo State, Nigeria. Frogs were captured from both habitats based on Acoustic Encounter Survey (AES) and the Visual Encounter Survey (VES) techniques. A total of 169 tree frogs were examined; 103 from Obazuwa Wetlands and 66 from Ikpako Riparian Habitat. The specimens from both sites comprised 08 species. Helminth parasites belonging to four taxa were recovered, which included: Cestoda, Trematoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala. A prevalence of 39.8% and 30.5% were recorded for Obazuwa Wetlands and Ikpako Habitat, respectively. The helminth parasites were restricted to one of both habitats except for Foleyellides sp., which was common to both sites. Some of the helminth parasites were reported for the first time in some of the hosts such as Baerietta jaegerskioeldi (in Afrixalus nigeriensis and Leptopelis spiritusnoctis), Amplicaecum africanum (in Hyperolius guttulatus, Aplectana macintoshii (in L. spiritusnoctis), Cosmocerca commutata (in A. dorsalis and L. spiritusnoctis) and Physaloptera sp. (in Hyperolius concolor Phase B and H. concolor Phase C). The occurrence of Foleyellides sp. in 6 species of tree frogs with a prevalence range of 23.1-75.1% whereas only two species have been previously reported is exceptional and of pathological concern.
