Eight-year evaluation of dental public health students’ research using balanced scorecard – Retrospective study

Introduction:Measuring the performance of dental schools in the research area has always been challenging. Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is a performance measurement tool with four perspectives that balance financial and non-financial performance indicators. Some medical colleges use BSC for performance measurement of all departments’ activities while others use it in some sections or departments. This study is the first in the dental education field to use the BSC approach to assess the performance measurement of dental students’ research projects. Methods:A self-developed BSC was designed by the staff members at the dental public health department to reflect the educational strategies and objectives of the department; all data on dental public health students’ research from 2013/2014 to 2020/2021 were collected from the dental public health department, Dental Clinics Complex (DCC) files as well as databases of the Quality Assurance Unit to cover the basic four balanced perspectives. Results:Data from the four perspectives were introduced to Balanced Scorecard Pro Software Version 4.7.1.20. The resulting balanced scorecard indicated that the overall performance of students’ research activities was 89.38%. The learning and growth perspective showed the highest performance (95.33%) followed by the financial perspective (92.5%) then the internal process perspective (89.55%) while the customer perspective showed the lowest performance (82.19%). Conclusions:BSC is an efficient tool for the measurement of the performance of the departments at medical colleges. Our process is highly adaptable and can be easily implemented by any section, or institution looking to advance its educational mission and vision.

Sleep Deprivation, Mental Health, and Anxiety of Chittagong University Students

Proper quality and quantity of sleep is an inevitable part for better cognitive and overall performance of students. Previous research shows that sleep deprivation affects both physical and mental state of the students. In this context, no literature is available in the perspective of Bangladesh. The main focus of this research was to obtain a deeper insight of the negative effects of sleep deprivation on mental health and anxiety of Chittagong University students. Purposively selected and readily available 200 respondents constituted the sample of the study. An adapted Bengali version of General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) (Sorcar and Rahman, 1989) and the Anxiety Scale developed by Deeba and Begum (2004) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. It was found that sleep deprivation has significant adverse effect on both mental health (f=9.51, df=198, p<0.01) and anxiety (f=l0.00, df=198, p<0.01). Sleep deprived students showed significantly lower mental health and significantly greater anxiety than sleep non-deprived students. Sleep duration was found positively correlated with mental health. Anxiety was found negatively correlated with sleep duration and mental health. Effective interventions against sleep deprivation are necessary to improve students' anxiety and mental health status. Automatic question-answer pairs generation using pre-trained large language models in higher education

The process of manually generating question and answer (QA) pairs for assessments is known to be a time-consuming and energy-intensive task for teachers, specifically in higher education. Several studies have proposed various methods utilising pre-trained large language models for the generation of QA pairs. However, it is worth noting that these methods have primarily been evaluated on datasets that are not specifically educational in nature. Furthermore, the evaluation metrics and strategies employed in these studies differ significantly from those typically used in educational contexts. The present discourse fails to present a compelling case regarding the efficacy and practicality of stated methods within the context of higher education. This study aimed to examine multiple QA pairs generation approaches in relation to their performance and the efficacy and constraints within the context of higher education. The various approaches encompassed in this study comprise pipeline, joint, multi-task approach. The performance of these approaches under consideration was assessed on three datasets related to distinct courses. The evaluation integrates three automated methods, teacher assessments, and real-world educational evaluations to provide a comprehensive analysis. The comparison of various approaches was conducted by directly assessing their performance using the average scores of different automatic metrics on three datasets. The results of the teachers and real educational evaluation indicate that the assessments generated were beneficial in enhancing the understanding of concepts and overall performance of students. The implications of the findings from this study hold significant importance in enhancing the efficacy of QA pair generation tools within the context of higher education.

Teaching Reform Program of Integrated Practice Course for Automotive Majors Based on ADDIE Model

Abstract The ADDIE model is highly compatible with teaching in terms of educational purposes, concepts, and processes and has a positive contribution to teaching. In this study, the ADDIE model is used to teach a comprehensive practice course for automobile majors in order to promote the systematic design and implementation of teaching. In this paper, the main problems to be solved are firstly extracted through the elemental analysis of the comprehensive practice course system of automobile majors, and the expected level of learning objectives to be achieved is pre-set. Then, a complete integration of educational media resources is carried out to test the effectiveness of the developed course instructional design. The fuzzy evaluation model is utilized to assess the quality of the course constructed by the ADDIE model. Specifically, the hierarchical analysis method is applied to calculate the index weights, and then the entropy weight method is used to correct the obtained index weights to obtain the final weights, determine the fuzzy operator, and make a comprehensive assessment of the teaching quality. It can be seen through the analysis that the method proposed in this paper makes the average final grade of the experimental class higher than that of the control class by 3.4524 points, and the final rating of teaching quality obtained by the method of this paper using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model is 3.7968 points, which is a good level. This indicates that the upgraded method of teaching practical courses is more effective than the original method, enhances the overall performance of students, and fulfills the requirements for teaching practice in automotive specialties.

IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ON HIGHER EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN SIERRA LEONE – A SURVEY

In Sierra Leone, higher educational institutions to date lack equipment, infrastructure, and quality electronic learning materials. ICT has not yet become a catalyst for transformational change in the educational system. Most of the efforts to embrace ICT in the national education system have proved futile due to high cost of acquisition of necessary equipment by the users and lack of adequate investment in the national ICT infrastructure. The objective of this paper is in two-folds. First, to examine the current state of ICT use and e-learning, especially as it relates to its impact on teaching and learning. Second, to identify potential areas for improvements with recommendations for policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders on how to leverage the potential of ICT in higher education. Data was electronically collected through questionnaires administered by students and lecturers in selected higher educational institutions using convenient sampling method. ANOVA statistical technique wise employed for data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that a vast majority of the respondents believe that ICT makes provision for more dynamism with up-to-date learning contents and could improve the overall performance of students. Additionally, the study found that ICT adoption rate in Sierra Leone is weak largely because of lack of ICT knowledge and awareness and the high cost of necessary infrastructure. The paper recommends that due to high cost of technology, Government must support higher educational institutions in their acquisition and maintenance; Institutions should make them a matter of priority and budget for them; and the compulsory use of ICT in the classroom must be encouraged.

Using a Modified Quality Control Charts on Academic Grades of Tertiary Institutions Students

Quality of products or services has different meaning by different Authors. Quality of academic processes in Nigeria is measured mainly by the standard set by regulatory bodies of Educational Institutions. There are a number of factors that affects quality assurance and students’ academic performance in Nigeria. This study is on the application of statistical quality control techniques on the academic performance of students. The study was aimed to investigate the performance of both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) students of the Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic (WUFP) Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria, using a modified version of the Shewhart’s quality control charts. Nine (9) departments from a total of 32 departments of the institution were selected. A total of 720 student’s records of Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) were studied. Twenty student’s records each were selected per session and per programme. The results showed that the overall performance of students of the Institution is within the average standard expected of each graduand of the Polytechnic as provided by the regulatory body, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

Fifth Grade Students' Performance and Common Errors in Equivalent Fractions

This study aimed to investigate the performance and common errors of fifth grade students in equivalent fractions. The study was conducted with 435 fifth grade students from two different middle schools in Salihli, which is a district of Manisa province, in the spring semester of the 2021 – 2022 academic year. In the study, survey design, one of the descriptive research models, was used. As a data collection tool, a test was developed by the researchers. Equivalent Fractions Knowledge Test, which consists of six open – ended questions, was administered to all fifth grade students at once. Students’ responses were analysed with descriptive statistical methods (frequency and percentage values). According to the results, the overall performance of students in the test was low. It was observed that the students showed the highest performance in a question which includes area model, and the lowest performance in a question given in context which includes set model. Additionally, the most common error was that students consider multiplying a fraction by 2 and expanding it by 2 as the same algorithm while they also think similarly dividing a fraction by 2 and simplifying it by 2 as the same algorithm.

Teaching design of Chinese contemporary stylized watercolor based on quadratic exponential smoothing model

Abstract This paper is based on the exponential smoothing model to enhance the abilities of watercolor students and achieve their stylized watercolor creation. Firstly, the system is structured from the predicted value of the smoothing index. The sum of weights is calculated for each coefficient, and the quadratic, exponential smoothing model is modified. The design of the watercolor teaching system based on the quadratic, exponential model was completed after analyzing the components of the teaching model. Finally, a comparison experiment was conducted to verify that the overall performance of students was improved, and the final test score of painting reached 69%, which was significantly improved relative to that of the control class. The students in the experimental class were also tested for their T-values, and the test results were all below the significance level. It indicates that after the systematic teaching designed in this paper, the watercolor students' watercolor skill ability, personal stylization, and watercolor creation ability have a positive enhancement effect.

Research on Scholarship System in Universities Based on AHP-EWM Combined Empowerment Method

It is crucial to scientifically evaluate students' excellence and to study the motivating effect of scholarships on students. In this paper, we develop a merit-based scholarship system that focuses on students' overall ability and is tailored to individual students. Firstly, the data in the annexes are pre-processed to eliminate the unqualified data and quantify the definite category data in them, and then a three-level evaluation index system is established to determine the overall performance of students, including 4 secondary indicators and 11 tertiary indicators. The weight of each tertiary indicator to the secondary indicators is determined by the entropy weighting method, and then the weight of the secondary indicators to the primary indicators is determined by the AHP-EWM combined weighting method, and finally the TOPSIS method is used to quantify and rank the students' comprehensive performance, and the scholarship is divided into school-level first, second and third grades, and the students with the top grades are selected for the award.

Environmental Noise Nuisance in Pedagogical Institutions in Jos Metropolis, Nigeria

This study evaluated environmental noise nuisance in pedagogical institutions located in Jos metropolis. Sixteen senior secondary schools and 282 senior students were selected through stratified and random sampling techniques respectively. Data were collected from 282 students using semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and mean, aided by SPSS- 23 software. Results were presented in tables and charts, which revealed that, over 58% of the students are "annoyingly noisy", with only 3% of them claiming their schools are "silent". About one-half claimed noise emanated mainly from road traffic, while demolition and construction contribute the least source of noise. All the sources of noise create setbacks on students' academic outcomes by distracting their: literacy, articulacy, numeracy and graphically abilities (mean = 4.3); concentration ((mean = 4.2), reading tasks & well-being (mean = 4.1); and cognitive tasks (mean = 4.0); among others. The weakening of overall performance of students (mean = 4.3) make them "very much annoyed" (50.4%). The correlation analysis, r value 0.98 showed a strong positive relationship between high noise level and decline in the overall academic outcomes of students. The paper recommended the need for: school owners to insulate classrooms against outdoor noise, raise high fences round schools, plant sound-absorbing trees within school compounds and the Government should relocate all schools to safe environments.

Medical students' perceptions of the educational environment in a private medical school in Southwest Nigeria.

The educational environment plays a very important role in determining the overall performance of students. The aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of undergraduate medical students about their educational environment in a Nigerian university. This was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted among final-year (600 level) undergraduate medical students. The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was used for the study to assess the educational environment of the medical students. A total number of 100 final-year (600 level) undergraduate medical students participated in the study, out of which 27 (27.0%) were males and 73 (73.0%) were females with a male-to-female ratio of 0.37 to 1. The age range of the respondents was 21-30 years with a mean (±SD) of 23.54 (±1.403). The total mean DREEM score was 116.2/200. The total score of SPL domain was 30.2/48 (62.9%). The total score of SPT domain was 27.3/44 (62.0%), while that of SASP was 19.2/32 (60.0%). The total score of SPA domain was 26.6/48 (55.4%) and that of SSP was 13.1/28 (46.8%). For the SPL, SPT, SASP, and SPA domains, the score was above 50%. However, for the SSP domain the score was less than 50%. The total mean DREEM score in this study was 116.2/200, more positives than negatives, with the students' social perspective having the least domain score. There is a need to provide adequate social support system for medical students in general and particularly for those who get stressed.

Computer model of a spectrum analyzer for a virtual laboratory: development and introduction to the educational process

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has changed the development plans of every country. Instead, governments had to constantly deal with ever-emerging issues in healthcare, education, economics and industry. As a result, there has been an accelerated introduction of digitalization in these spheres. Thus, an increasing number of people have started using electronic services that have improved their digital literacy. This feature has had a positive impact on society and helped to create new interaction tools between populations and governments, students and institutions, customers and companies. The article aims to analyze how studying radio electronics can be improved by involving new tools and how they can be applied in distance learning. This work presents the results of the development and application of a virtual radio signal simulation in the educational process in the form of a laboratory practicum. Working on this approach required specific research in the field; the foreign experience was observed and studied. The review allowed us to find out how digitalization and the application of digital tools affect the behaviour, cognition, and overall performance of students during the pandemic. The authors conducted a questionnaire among students to evaluate the features of the virtual laboratory work and their effect on the educational process. The results analyzed are given in the article. They showed that students highly appreciate the introduction of such tools in learning. Moreover, like the entire laboratory, the proposed model can be used in the educational process offline and with distance learning. Finally, the article describes the experience and results of the software package's development and integration for the spectrum analyzer's computer model and virtual laboratory work using the MS VS environment in C ++. The results of the conducted work demonstrate the versatility of the proposed approach, its positive impact on the educational process, high potential in the other spheres.

Did the Characteristics of Kosovar Teachers Influence the Results of Students in TIMSS 2019? Findings from the Performance of Kosovar Students in TIMSS 2019

This paper aimed to explore the impact of Kosovar teachers’ characteristics on the performance of fourth-grade students in TIMSS 2019. The paper addressed the characteristics of teachers, demographic, and academics, which are closely related to the overall performance of students. In this research, data from the TIMSS 2019 database were used, for which 4435 Kosovar students were tested, and 192 teachers were surveyed. The findings show that Kosovar students did not perform well in TIMSS 2019. They achieved 444 points in the field of mathematics and 413 points in science (average TIMSS 500 points) and were ranked 49th out of 56 countries participating in the test. Data from the teacher survey show that the characteristics of teachers, such as age, professional development, pre-service education, contemporary approach to teaching, etc., also played an important role in the low-scoring performance of Kosovar students in TIMSS 2019. Students who had a teacher with an average age of 30–60 years had a better performance on the test, achieving a difference of 20 points more, compared to students who had new or older teachers (under 30 years and over 60 years). The lack of professional development of teachers also had a major impact on student performance. On average, 25% of teachers in the last 2 years had attended training in certain areas, while on average 80% of them were willing to attend training programs that would improve the profile of their competencies.

Bocce Training Based on Computer Technology Has an Effect on Physical Education in Colleges and Universities

Computer technology refers to the technical methods and technical means used in the computer field, which have the function of data storage, modification, and calculation of related logic and data. Physical education in colleges and universities has various levels and complex contents. From the perspective of bocce training in college physical education, this paper proposes a research direction for bocce training based on computer technology for the development of college physical education. First, a brief introduction to bocce is given, and then the traditional training methods of bocce are explained. It mainly includes technical training, physical fitness training, and psychological quality training. Then, the computer-assisted teaching is explained. Finally, the computer-assisted teaching and the traditional mode of teaching are contrasted. The experimental results show that the overall performance of students’ technical training, physical fitness training, and psychological training assisted by computer technology is 3.53% higher than that of students under traditional teaching. This shows that bocce training based on computer technology is more conducive to improving the level of sports training of students, thereby improving the quality of physical education.

Impacts of Coping Strategies for Electricity Load Shedding among University Students

Introduction: Electricity crisis is growing day by day which affects our routine life. The purpose of the study was to assess the impacts and coping strategies of electricity load shedding that wereadopted by university students. Methodology: The descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 384 university students during campus timings at the University of Sindh Jamshoro. The level of the confidence interval was set 95% with 0.05% of margin error. A convenient sampling technique was used. The raw data were analyzed and edited in MS Excel and then entered in SPSS version 16. Frequency and percentage were calculated for measuring the impact of load shedding and chi-square test was used where it needed. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 21.7 years, ± 2.65. The findings of the present study showed 78% of students felt physically, mentally and emotionally ill due to load shedding. Our study revealed 71.61% of students who felt anxiety due to load shedding. A study result showed 41% of the respondents who became angry and caused physical violence. Present study also identified 77% of the participant’s sleep was disturbed. A study indicated 76.56% of student’s punctuality was affected. Our study inquired 75% students’ grades were affected and 87% students could not maintain concentration during lectures. Walking, physical exercise, and listening to music were identified as coping strategies. Conclusion: Electricity load shedding badly affects the overall performance of students including their punctuality, concentration during classes, and preparation of assignments, examinations, and results. Furthermore, the findings of this research should be confirmed in a cohort or longitudinal studies. Keywords: Load shedding, coping strategies, physical illnesses, and mental illnesses.

Stress amongst paediatric dental postgraduate students in India: A mixed-method approach.

Dental profession is one of the most stressful healthcare occupations. Paediatric dental postgraduates face multifaceted challenges in their everyday practice. This study aimed to determine the sources of stress amongst paediatric dental postgraduate students in India using a mixed-method approach. A sequential mixed-methods approach was employed. In the quantitative phase, a cross-sectional web-based questionnaire survey was conducted amongst paediatric dental postgraduates in India using the "Google Forms application" link. Based on the Dental Environment Stress (DES) questionnaire, the stress PACT questionnaire which includes 35 items was framed and validated. This validated questionnaire was used in the survey. In the qualitative phase, one-on-one, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted amongst 12 postgraduates. A total of 422 participants took part in the quantitative survey. Academic and specialty-related domains were found to be the significant causes of stress amongst the five domains (p<.001). The top three stressful factors were as follows: getting an ideal case for clinical exams (68.2%), financial resources for conferences, dissertation, short studies and publications (53.2%) and fear of unemployment after graduation (52.3%). Based on qualitative interviews, four themes were derived, namely choice of paediatric dentistry, postgraduate life experience, stress management and expected changes in postgraduate life. Psychological well-being of the student is an important factor that influences the overall performance of students. Identifying the stress factors and using appropriate coping strategies can help postgraduates achieve personal, academic and professional success.

Strategies for Student Evaluation in The Online Context

In this paper we conducted an investigation on the performance of the students during the second semester of the academic year 2020-2021. We looked at the performance results obtained by students on the laboratory work, practical and final exams while we were forced by the Covid pandemic to move entirely into an online education system. Our focus was to determine the impact of a consistent behaviour (or lack of it) on the final student performance. We determined that, even in an online setting, a good involvement (in terms of attendance and good performance) guarantees good final results. The investigations were performed using the Formal Concept Analysis, which is a very powerful instrument already used by us in previous research in order to detect student behaviour in using an e-learning portal. Another set of results showed that the change of the final mark computation formula to be based in a higher proportion on the lab work was closer to the actual overall performance of students

Assessment of Physical Therapy Students Performance during Clinical Practice

Aim: To assess the clinical performance of (DPT) students in Lahore by using assessment of physical therapist practice questionnaire (APP). Methodology: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted by using simple random sampling technique. Total 91 students of final year DPT among Lahore were selected for this study. 60% of the students from each college were enrolled. The data was collected by using the standardized questionnaire named assessment of physical therapy questionnaire (APP). Whole information was kept confidential. The data was analyzed by SPSS 23. Results: Results showed that global rating score at APP questionnaire was 62.4% (57 out of 91) reflecting overall good performance during the clinical rotation, 18.68% (17 out of 91) students present satisfactory results ranges, 14.29% (13 out of 91) present acceptable performance and 4.40 % ( 4 out of 91) students showed inappreciable performance. There mean age of 91 students were 21.25 with standard deviation 0.9236. The Pearson chi square test p=0.948, p &lt;0.005. It reveals that there is no significant variation between gender and overall performance of students during clinical rotation Conclusion: This study concluded that maximum final year DPT students showed good performance during clinical practice, indicated that curriculum for DPT students is good enough to make student professionally competent. The Critical Role of ‘Nonacademic Stakeholders’ in Fostering Overall Student Performance in Curricular and Extracurricular Assessments in Primary and Secondary Educational Institutions in Kenya

This work examined the integral role of ‘nonacademic stakeholders’ in fostering the overall performance of students in primary and secondary schools in Kenya. School teachers are generally regarded by the Kenyan public as the ‘sole custodians’ of student performance in all assignments both curricular and extracurricular. On the contrary the progressive education of a learner from nursery to secondary school is evidently a ‘wholesome’ and ‘holistic ’contribution from various stakeholders that comprises majorly; teachers, parents, and guardians. However nonacademic stakeholders that include subordinate staff, religious sponsors, old boy/girl alumni associations, health providers, Boards of Management (BOMs), Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and safety and security providers make equal significant contribution towards the eventual success of their students. In order to determine the extent of the role performed by nonacademic stakeholders 206 student respondents from a tertiary institution in Kenya were identified through a stratified random sampling technique and interviewed. The results obtained were presented using frequencies, graphs and pie-charts. The respondents reported the significant role of the nonacademic stakeholders as follows :-[( 86%, 178 students - important; 11%, 22 students - less important; 3%,6 students - not sure)].Individually the respondents ranked the following nonacademic stakeholders in order of significance; [( 14%, religious school sponsors; 8%, subordinate staff; 36%, parents; 6%, safety and security providers; 8%, old boy/girl alumni associations; 9%, Boards of Management (BOM); 6%, health providers; 13% Teachers Service Commission (TSC))].The present study concluded that overall performance in curricular and extracurricular assignments among students in Kenyan primary and secondary schools is influenced by multiple stakeholders in the education sector i.e. academic and nonacademic. The results show that 97% of all respondents viewed positively the role played by nonacademic stakeholders in promoting the overall performance of students in curricular and extracurricular assignments in primary and secondary schools in Kenya.
