ZnO-based triboelectric nanogenerator and tribotronic transistor for tactile switch and displacement sensor applications

Tribotronics, the coupling of triboelectricity and semiconductors, is a novel field that has sparked much interest in the nanoelectronics and nanoenergy industries. This work presents the fabrication of a ZnO tribotronic transistor by combining a ZnO thin film transistor (ZnO-TFT) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) operating in vertical contact separation mode. A Si/SiO2/ZnO/Au structure was used to construct a bottom-gated ZnO-TFT. Radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was employed to deposit ZnO thin film, and the Au contact was achieved through thermal evaporation. A range of annealing temperatures was investigated, and ZnO TFT annealed at 500 °C exhibited a maximum electron mobility of 5.47 cm2/V s and a high on/off ratio of 105. We also investigated the photoresponse of this optimized ZnO-TFT using a UV LED. A vertical contact separation mode TENG was fabricated using ZnO (tribo-positive layer) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF, tribo-negative layer) and combined with the ZnO TFT to fabricate a tribotronic transistor. The drain current of the tribotronic transistor dropped from 2.9 to 0.02 µA at a drain voltage of 5 V when the tribo layers were separated by 15 mm. Within the separation region of 2 mm, the device showed a 1.29 µA/mm change in drain current demonstrating its effectiveness in displacement sensing. Unlike conventional TFTs, the TENG's output could successfully control the tribotronic transistor's drain current and was innovative in such domains where conventional electrical components were constrained. Furthermore, this ZnO tribotronic device was used as an active smart tactile switch by simply touching or releasing the ZnO TENG with a finger.

Triboelectric Series of Two‐dimensional Metal Carbide MXenes

AbstractThe ever‐increasing prevalence of intelligent electronics underscores an escalating demand for sustainable power sources. Among the emerging energy harvesting technologies, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) stand out as a promising solution for such pressing needs. To date, ongoing efforts have primarily focused on enhancing TENG output, particularly through the development of novel triboelectric materials. Among the potential candidates is the thriving class of two‐dimensional transition‐metal carbides, MXenes, which have predominantly been incorporated into triboelectric layers as nanofillers to enhance their triboelectric properties. Yet, the specific triboelectric characteristics of distinct MXenes remain marginally explored. Herein, the triboelectric properties of various metal carbide MXenes, i.e., V2CTx, Ti3C2Tx, and Nb2CTx, are investigated by assessing the performance of various MXene‐based TENGs combined with different polymers and analyzing their surface potential. According to the attained triboelectric polarities, a triboelectric series of the studied MXenes is determined, demonstrating their remarkable positive triboelectric properties. Further investigations preliminarily reveal the influence of the synthesis method, etchants, intercalating compounds, and postsynthesis procedures on the triboelectric properties of MXenes. Hence, beyond extending the conventional triboelectric series to different metal carbide MXenes, the findings present innovative perspectives on leveraging MXenes to develop high‐performance TENGs for flexible and wearable electronics.

Dual polarity open circuit voltage in triboelectric nanogenerators originated from two states series impedance

Experimental and simulation studies demonstrated that the initial voltage setting significantly influences the open-circuit voltage (VOC) in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Utilizing diode configurations, we consistently observed two distinct VOCs independent of the initial settings. A lower VOC corresponded to the surface voltage (VSurface), while a higher VOC was amplified by the product of the VSurface and the TENG's characteristic impedance ratio. Notably, a lower measurement system capacitance provided a more precise representation of the inherent characteristics of the TENG. Conversely, an increase in system impedance led to a convergence of the two VOCs and a reduction in their magnitudes relative to VSurface. These findings suggest that optimizing the initial/repeated charge balancing and minimizing capacitive loads are crucial for maximizing TENG output power in practical applications.

In-situ amino-functionalized and reduced graphene oxide/polyimide composite films for high-performance triboelectric nanogenerator

As a promising sustainable power source in intelligent electronics, Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered widespread interest, with various strategies explored to enhance their output performance. However, most optimization methods for triboelectric materials have focused solely on tuning chemical compositions or fabricating surface microstructures. Here, we have prepared amino-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (FRGO)/polyimide (PI) composite films (PI-FRGO) via in-situ polymerization, aimed at enhancing PI materials’ nanotribological power generation performance. By varying the doping levels of amino groups and controlling the FRGO proportion during synthesis, we can explore the optimal FRGO/PI composite film ratio. At a p-Phenylenediamine: reduced Graphene Oxide (PPDA: RGO) ratio of 1:1 and an FRGO addition of 0.1 %, the output electrical performance peaks with a voltage of 58 V, a charge of 33 nC and a current of 12 μA, nearly 2 times that of a pure PI film. We have fabricated a TENG with an optimally formulated PI-FRGO composite to explore its application potential. Under a 10 MΩ external load resistance, the TENG can deliver a power density of 3.5 mW/m2 and can be powering small devices. This work presents new effective strategies to significantly enhance TENG output performance and promote their widespread application.

Ethylcellulose and Bismuth Sodium Titanate-Barium Zirconate Titanate (BNT-BZT) Composite Fibers for Triboelectric Energy Harvesting

Green cellulose and toxic-free/rare earth-free nanomaterials are promising towards the development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as energy harvesters for sustainable electronics. In this study, ethylcellulose (EC) and bismuth sodium titanate-barium zirconate titanate (BNT-BZT) are used as raw materials. An EC and BNT-BZT composite fiber mat was prepared by electrospinning and used as a positive triboelectric layer in a friction nanogenerator, while fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) was used as a negative triboelectric layer. After optimizing the electrospinning parameters and characterizing the materials, the developed TENG output power was studied as a function of the BNT-BZT doping concentration in the EC. At 2wt% of doping, the output voltage of the TENG has a 3-fold increase compared with that obtained with a pure EC mat as the positive triboelectric layer. In addition, the TENG showed good output performance and operating stability after exposure to high temperature (70 ºC) and relative humidity (90%). The maximum output power density of 134 μW/cm2 was obtained at a load resistance of 210 MΩ, showing good prospects in powering Internet of Things (IoT) sensor nodes.

Keplerate-Type Polyoxometalates-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Higher Performance via the Morphology Modulation of Blackberry Structure.

The tribe-material is the key factor affecting the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Inorganic materials have higher heat resistance and stability than widely used organic materials. However, the weaker tribe-property limits the application of TENGs. Modulating surface roughness by changing particle shape and size is a simple way to increase performance for TENGs. Polyoxometalates (POMs) have unrivalled structural diversity and can self-assemble to form different nanostructures. In this study, we propose [{(NH4)42[Mo72 VIMo60 VO372(CH3COO)30 (H2O)72] ⋅ ca.300H2O ⋅ ca.CH3COONH4)}-Mo132] and [{Na8K14(VO)2[{(MoVI) (Mo5 VIO21)(H2O)3]}10{(MoVI)Mo5 VIO21(H2O)3 (SO4)}2{VIVO(H2O)20} {VIVO}10({KSO4}5)2] ⋅ 150H2O)}-Mo72V30] with blackberry structure which are cured and prepared into film by spin-coating technique, are used as positive tribe-materials for the first time in the field of TENGs. Keplerate-type POMs can form blackberry structures with higher dispersibility and flexibility, which can be used to control surface roughness by regulating the size of particles. The discovery proves that the particle size influences the surface roughness, which adjusts the output of TENGs. According to our findings, Mo132-h-TENG generates an output voltage of 29.3 V, an output charge of 8 Nc, which is 2-3 folds higher than Mo132-TENG, and a maximum power density of 6.25 mW ⋅ m-2 at 300 MΩ. Our research provides that altering the dimensional size can be an available way to raise the output of TENGs.

Reduced graphene oxide/TiO2 hybrid synergistically enhanced polyimide nanofibers with high triboelectric output and thermal charge stability

The output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can drop dramatically in high temperature environments because of the thermionic emission effect. To enhance the thermal charge stability and expand the working temperature of TENG, polyimide nanofibers (PINF) were synergistically enhanced by the electron trapping mechanism of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and interfacial polarization of TiO2. With the multiple enhancement effect of polyimide/rGO/TiO2 composite nanofibers (PRTNF) on triboelectric output, PRTNF-TENG generated an open circuit voltage of 228.26 V and a short circuit current of 5.22 μA, which were 3.80 and 3.48 times higher than those of PINF-TENG. The effective output of polymer-based TENG was investigated from 25 − 300 °C. Compared to room temperature, the PRTNF-TENG can maintain 19.45 % (44.39 V) and 18.20 % (0.95 μA) of the voltage and current at 300 °C, respectively, and still drive 50 commercial LEDs. Furthermore, PRTNF-TENGs were applied as self-powered sensors for firefighters to provide real-time motion monitoring and ambient temperature detection. This PRTNF-TENG has broad application prospects for energy harvesting and smart electronic monitor in harsh environments such as fire and space.

Self-powered porous polymer sensors with high sensitivity for machine learning-assisted motion and rehabilitation monitoring

Muscle contraction and relaxation inherently contains valuable information crucial for monitoring physical states, rehabilitation, and injury prevention. However, the majority of flexible wearable devices struggle to offer customizable sensors with high sensitivity, durability, and stability, resulting in suboptimal biofeedback performance. Herein, the machine learning-assisted smart motion and rehabilitation monitoring system (SMRMS) is demonstrated for full-body motion recognition and rehabilitation assessment using a designed porous triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) array. A theoretical model of porous materials is built to demonstrate the effect mechanism of porosity on TENG output. Through pore design on the tribolayer, theoretical simulation and experimental are performed to determine the key features of porous TENG sensors with high sensitivity (1.76 kPa−1), fast response time (50 ms) and high durability (over 100,000 cycles). A ring-shaped TENG (RS-TENG) is fabricated based on the porous TENG sensor, enabling real-time recording of leg/arm force without additional attachment. By integrating the RS-TENG array with a multichannel signal acquisition system, an SMRMS is designed to capture motion information during human subjects’ exercise and rehabilitation training. These data are then fused for machine learning analytics, resulting in significantly improved accuracy in motion pattern recognition (98.75 %) and rehabilitation monitoring (100 %). The simple, precise and durable porous sensors could help mitigate the risk of excessive exercise-induced muscle injuries, expanding self-powered wearable functionalities and adaptabilities.

Suppressing charge recombination by synergistic effect of ferromagnetic dual-tribolayer for high output triboelectric nanogenerator

Charge recombination occurring inside the tribolayer limits the further improvement of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) output. While the doping of ferromagnetic medium in triboelectric materials has been proven effective in boosting the TENG output, its working mechanism in the tribolayer remains to be investigated. Herein, the dual tribolayer synergistic effect is demonstrated as a means of suppressing surface charge recombination, thus achieving a high peak power density of TENG based on a composite film of polymer/nickel nanoparticles. A dual tribolayer model is proposed to reveal the working mechanism of the ferromagnetic medium for suppressing charge recombination in the positive and negative tribolayer. The charge recombination ratio as a standardized assessment method is defined to quantify the surface charge loss. Owing to the dual tribolayer synergistic effect, the optimal TENG exhibits a record-high peak power density of 15.2 W m-2 Hz-1 with the ultra-low charge recombination ratio of 2.1%, representing a remarkable 3100% increase in comparison to pristine TENG in the atmospheric environment. A self-powered sitting posture monitoring system is developed based on the woven structured DT-TENGs benefiting from the dual-tribolayer synergistic effect. This work demonstrates the superior behavior of TENG in generating ultra-high-power output and provides a significant guidance in materials selection.

Hygroscopic paper enhanced using hydroxyapatite coating for wearable TENG sensors

Wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted considerable attention in the field of self-powered sensors that can be worn on the skin directly without packaging because of their breathability, conformability, and sensitivity to collect biomechanical energy. However, high humidity on the skin can affect the wearable TENG output performance, substantially affecting the sensor performance and stability. When worn for a long time, humidity can even cause skin inflammation. Thus, for a wearable TENG, moisture control and biocompatibility are also key factors that need to be addressed. Herein, we report a hygroscopic and biocompatible paper-based TENG using a hydroxyapatite (HAP) mineral coating to enhance the paper fiber. The mineral coating can maintain the surface of the paper fiber, which will not cause large external deformation of the paper fiber under a force, avoid squeezing out excess water, and keep the friction surface dry, avoiding humidity affecting the output performance. Without interfering with the performance of the TENG, the maximum water absorption of the HAP composite paper is ∼8 μL. The HAP composite paper–based TENG (4 cm2) has an open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current 5.8 times and 4.2 times that of pure paper, respectively, and can obtain 80.4 mW/m2 output and directly light 117 LEDs. At relative humidity values of 25.7 %, 43.1 %, and 58.8 %, the performance retained the peak values of 80.2 %, 68 %, and 63.7 %, respectively. Even at a high relative humidity of 71.7 %, the triboelectric performance of HAP composite paper is retained 59.3 %, and the stability under humidity is better than that of pure paper (45.6 %). In addition, the mineral paper can even work with tissue fluid and output performance decreases by 43.8 %. The mineral-enhanced paper TENG with high power generation performance, hygroscopicity, biocompatibility, and degradability provides a new perspective for disposable wearable sensors, even in medical treatment.

Development of flexible high-performance PDMS-based triboelectric nanogenerator using nanogratings

This article investigates the performance of a contact-mode Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) utilizing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with nano gratings as a dielectric in a metal-dielectric configuration. The evaluation encompasses the impact of gratings, tapping frequency, various load conditions, and contact area on the TENG performance. The fabrication involves spin-coating PDMS onto a master mold to create the device. Experimental measurements reveal a significant enhancement of 97% in open-circuit voltage by introducing gratings on PDMS. Furthermore, as the tapping frequency increases from 1 Hz to 3 Hz, there is a corresponding rise of 108% in output voltage. The influence of load resistance on TENG output performance demonstrates its ability to drive different loads efficiently. Moreover, enlarging the contact area of the device substantially increases the open-circuit voltage. A device with a 400 mm2 contact area can generate a voltage of 80 V at a low frequency of 3 Hz, indicating the importance of considering device size and contact area for specific applications. A practical circuit integrating a TENG with a full-wave bridge rectifier demonstrates energy harvesting capabilities by successfully illuminating a light-emitting diode (LED) and charging various capacitors. The fabricated devices exhibit better performance along with a cost-effective and easy fabrication process.

Tunable 2D Conjugated Porous Organic Polymer Films for Precise Molecular Nanofiltration and Optoelectronics.

Structural design of 2D conjugated porous organic polymer films (2D CPOPs), by tuning linkage chemistries and pore sizes, provides great adaptability for various applications, including membrane separation. Here, four free-standing 2D CPOP films of imine- or hydrazone-linked polymers (ILP/HLP) in combination with benzene (B-ILP/HLP) and triphenylbenzene (TPB-ILP/HLP) aromatic cores are synthesized. The anisotropic disordered films, composed of polymeric layered structures, can be exfoliated into ultrathin 2D-nanosheets with layer-dependent electrical properties. The bulk CPOP films exhibit structure-dependent optical properties, triboelectric nanogenerator output, and robust mechanical properties, rivaling previously reported 2D polymers and porous materials. The exfoliation energies of the 2D CPOPs and their mechanical behavior at the molecular level are investigated using density function theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, respectively. Exploiting the structural tunability, the comparative organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) performance of six membranes having different pore sizes and linkages to yield valuable trends in molecular weight selectivity is investigated. Interestingly, the OSN performances follow the predicted transport modeling values based on theoretical pore size calculations, signifying the existence of permanent porosity in these materials. The membranes exhibit excellent stability in organic solvents at high pressures devoid of any structural deformations, revealing their potential in practical OSN applications.

Beyond energy harvesting: a review on the critical role of MXene in triboelectric nanogenerator

In the field of advanced materials and energy harvesting, MXene has played a pivotal role in advancing the development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). This contribution is notable not only in terms of enhancing the performance of TENGs but also in expanding their application range. A comprehensive review of MXene materials is offered herein to delve into the significant impact of MXene on the growing efficiency of energy harvesting and widening application in areas ranging from energy harvesters to physiochemical sensors to self-powered intelligent systems. We begin with the fundamentals of MXene and TENGs, then highlight how MXene improves TENGs via its integration into the triboelectrification and electrode layers to increase the electronegativity, charge density, and introduce self-healing and stretchability. The discussion then extends to the modifications in MXene that boost the electrical output, stability, and collection efficiency of TENGs. Additionally, the review covers the diverse applications of MXene-based TENGs in extreme environments, respiratory monitoring, and multi-purpose devices, emphasizing its critical role in promoting TENGs to future self-powered intelligent systems.

Enhancing the Output Performance of Triboelectric Nanogenerator Through Regulation of its Internal Nano-Architecture.

Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) has proven highly effective in converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. Previous research on manipulating microstructure for performance enhancement primarily focused on the surface of TENGs. In this study, an innovative bottom-up strategic design to control the internal nano-architecture for the enhanced output of TENG is proposed. This multiscale structural design strategy consists of defect chemistry (angstrom-scale), surface modification (nano-scale), and spatial regulation of nanoparticles (meso-scale), which helps explore the optimal utilization of TENG's internal structure. After fine-tuning the nano-architecture, the output voltage is significantly increased. This optimized TENG serves as a robust platform for developing self-powered systems, including self-powered electrochemical chlorination systems for sterilization. Additionally, through the utilization of multiscale simulations (density functional theory, all-atom molecular dynamics, and dissipative particle dynamics), the underlying mechanisms governing how the optimized nanoparticle-polymer interface and spatial arrangement of nanoparticles influence the storage and transfer of charges are comprehensively elucidated. This study not only demonstrates the effectiveness of manipulating internal nano-architecture to enhance TENG performance for practical applications but also provides invaluable insights into structural engineering for TENG advancement.

Self‐Boosting Energy Generation via Triboelectric Nanogenerator–Capacitor Coupling

AbstractWith the development of wearable and wireless electronic devices, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is attracting interest as a candidate for portable power. Many studies are conducted to increase the surface charge density of the TENG, such as external charge pumping or external electron excitation strategies. However, there are limitations in that another additional external energy source is required. Here, a TENG–capacitor (TC) coupling system that can maximize energy generation and storage efficiency within a limited volume is proposed. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the electric field induced on capacitor increases the fermi energy of positive triboelectric material, resulting in more charge transfer between two triboelectric materials. TC coupling system enhances TENG output performance and the capacitor charging rate in a virtuous cycle. This study provides new insights into TENG structural design and an important guideline for the use of TENG as a portable power source for wearable and wireless applications.

The intrinsic impact of dielectric constant on output generation of triboelectric nanogenerators

Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENG), which convert mechanical energy into electrical pulses, are envisioned to lead future energy harvesting and self-powered sensing applications in wearable and IoT sectors. While optimisation of most parameters related to TENG is well understood, the impact of dielectric constant, which is fundamental to their output generation, is still a highly debated topic. The intrinsic impact of dielectric constant on TENG performance is extremely difficult to assess experimentally, as it closely associates with other parameters like surface charge density that can alter TENG outputs. Herein, for the first time, we present a study to fully characterise the intrinsic impact of dielectric constant on TENG outputs. First, theoretical methods are used to investigate TENG outputs against increasing dielectric constant. A novel experimental technique is introduced using an array of liquid filler materials, providing a unique pathway to systematically tune the dielectric constant without impacting other TENG parameters. This study, for the first time, unveils the load-dependent behaviour of TENG output generation against increasing dielectric constant, along with several other previously unreported output trends. By tuning the dielectric constant, we demonstrate up to 122% (theoretical) and 28% (experimental) increments in TENG power output, paving the way for enhanced TENG optimisation.

Polyoxometalate-Modified g-C3N4 Composites with High Work Function for Triboelectric Nanogenerators.

Designing friction materials with high electron storage capacity, high work function, low cost, and high stability is an important method to improve the output performance of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Here, we report two kinds of friction materials based on Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs)-modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4), namely, g-C3N4@PMo12 and g-C3N4@PW12, and form TENG with commercial indium tin oxide/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (ITO/PET) electrodes. The performance test shows that the g-C3N4@PMo12 TENG device exhibits a high output voltage of about 78 V, a current of about 657 nA, and a transfer charge of about 15 nC, which is more than 3 times higher than that of unmodified TENG. This performance improvement is attributed to the fact that POM loaded on the surface of g-C3N4 can be used as a shallow electron trap to increase the electron storage capacity through electron interaction and to increase the charge density on the surface of the material by increasing the work function of the composite. This work not only broadens the choices of TENG friction materials but also offers a practical means of enhancing TENG's output performance.

Dielectric materials for high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), as a micro-nano power source or self-powered sensor, has shown great prospects in various industries in recent years. The TENG output performance is closely related to the contact electrification characteristics of the triboelectric dielectric material. Herein, we first introduce the relevant fundamental theory and models of TENG and tribo-dielectrics. Then, we introduce the material selection, modification method (including surface modification and bulk modification) and structural design strategy of TENG dielectric material. Surface and bulk modification mainly involve surface roughness control, surface functional group regulation, and optimization of dielectric parameters. In terms of dielectric structural design, the principle of charge transport, trapping, and blocking layers as well as typical techniques to improve the dielectric properties of TENGs through multi-layer structures are highlighted. Finally, challenges and directions for future research are discussed, which is conducive to the fabricating of high-performance TENG dielectric materials.

Boosting the Charge Density of Triboelectric Nanogenerator by Suppressing Air Breakdown and Dielectric Charge Leakage

AbstractCharge generation and charge decay are two essential factors that determine the surface charge density of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). However, research mainly focuses on boosting charge generation, and little attention is paid to suppressing charge decay. Here, a strategy of suppressing charge decay, including the air breakdown and dielectric charge leakage, of TENG with high surface charge density (HCD‐TENG) is proposed by utilizing a dual dielectric layer. A series of parameters of different dielectric materials are tested with the assistance of a charge excitation TENG (CE‐TENG) to reveal the relationships between charge generation, air breakdown, and dielectric charge leakage in the atmospheric environment. Further, the phenomenon of dielectric charge leakage limiting the maximum output of TENG prior to air breakdown is observed for the first time. With the simultaneous suppression of the air breakdown and dielectric charge leakage, the output of TENG is enhanced to 2.2 mC m−2. This work not only provides new insight into the performance optimization and material selection of TENG, but also provides significant guidance for obtaining high‐output TENG in the future.
