The acceptance of traditional Chinese medicine among patients with Parkinson’s disease: A hospital survey

ObjectiveThe efficacy of medications for Parkinson’s disease (PD) tend to decline over time, which has a serious impact on patients’ health and quality of life. To some extent, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can resolve the distressing problem of ineffective dopaminergic medication in PD patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude, acceptance, and independent predictors of TCM in PD patients admitted to the outpatient department of a tertiary hospital. MethodsA cross-sectional study of PD patients was conducted in the outpatient department of a large tertiary hospital in Beijing from March 2022 to June 2023. A self-report questionnaire was developed to investigate PD patients’ attitudes and acceptance of TCM based on the questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were also performed to further clarify the independent predictors influencing patients’ adoption of TCM therapy. ResultsA total of 397 patients completed the questionnaire, of which 78.09% were willing to be treated with TCM and 21.91% indicated that they were not willing to use TCM. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that several parameters were correlated with a patient’s willingness to include TCM in their therapeutic regime. These included education level of a bachelor’s degree (odds ratio [OR) = 8.554; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.112–17.794; P < 0.001, vs junior high school education), living in an urban setting (OR = 8.022; 95% CI: 4.577–14.060; P < 0.001, vs rural), having other underlying diseases (OR = 5.126; 95% CI: 3.078–8.537; P < 0.001, vs none), having previously used TCM (OR = 3.083; 95% CI: 1.852–5.134; P < 0.001, vs not used), believing that TCM therapy is safe (OR = 3.530; 95% CI: 1.446–8.616; P = 0.006, vs not thought), believing that TCM therapy is effective (OR = 3.859; 95% CI: 1.482–10.047; P = 0.006, vs not understood), and being willing to discuss ongoing TCM therapy with an attending physician (OR = 62.468; 95% CI: 30.350–128.574; P < 0.001, vs not informed). ConclusionThis study initially investigated the acceptance, attitude, and independent predictors of TCM use among PD patients. To expand the prevalence of TCM use among patients with PD, we recommend to broadening the public outreach for TCM via contemporary means of Internet and broadcast communication, enhancing access to TCM services in rural communities, and strengthening the communication between doctors and patients.Please cite this article as: Wang P, Hong J, Tang ZQ, Gong BZ, Qi XR, Jiang H, Pan B, Chen Q. Study of quality of sleep in patients with psychiatric illness under remission in relation to quality of life and functional disability

Sleep is one of the essential biological rhythms of a human being. Sleep disturbances could precipitate psychiatric illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, etc. Even when psychiatric disorders are successfully treated, sleep disturbances often fail to remit. The quality of sleep in such patients is badly affected and influences the daytime functioning and impairs the overall quality of life.&#x0D; The aim of the study. To study quality of sleep of patients with psychiatric illness under remission in relation to quality of life and functional disability.&#x0D; Material and methods. Patients attending the review outpatient department of Tertiary hospital are selected for the study. Patients diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria were taken. Patients meeting remission criteria for bipolar affective disorder i.e., YMRS score &lt;/=8, MADRS score &lt;/=10 and for schizophrenia –eight PANSS signs and symptoms score &lt;3 are selected from them. Quality of sleep is compared with quality of life and functional disability.&#x0D; Results: Mean age was found to be 36.59. Mean PSQI score is 8.35. The mean score of physical quality of life domain is 58.28, mean score of psychological quality of life domain is 56.63, mean score of social quality of life domain is 55.39, and mean score of environmental quality of life domain is 55.41. Mean score of functional disability score is 30.14.&#x0D; Conclusion: Poor quality of sleep in Schizophrenia and BPAD needs to be addressed.

Severity of Stress in Acne Patients Attending Dermatology Outpatient Department of Tertiary Hospital in Kathmandu

Introduction: Stress persists when a person is unable to cope with the situations of the past, present or future. Stress may be associated with physical and psychological abnormalities. Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilo-sebaceous units with prevalence of more than 85% in adolescent age group. Materials and Methods: Three hundred one patients were recruited in the study. Inclusion criteria included new acne patients of age 16 years and above as well as those who were using but not improving with topical or oral acne therapies. Exclusion criteria included patients receiving sedatives, antidepressants, or glucocorticoids, patient suffering from chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, migraine and other diseases. This questionnaire included biodata of the patients, clinical history and their perceived stress scale. Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) was used to assess acne severity in relation to stress using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results: The results indicated an increase in stress severity positively correlated with an increase in acne severity, which was statistically significant (p&lt;0.01). Most of the patients were students. Subjects with higher stress scores, determined using the PSS, had higher acne severity when examined and graded using the GAGS. Conclusions: The results showed that there is a positive correlation between severity of stress and grade of acne. Stress management should be a part of acne management.

Assessment of knowledge regarding birth spacing method among married women visiting outpatient department in selected hospital at Mangaluru

Decisions regarding family planning cannot be forced but need to adopted willingly. Countries with many customs and traditions prefer interval method than sterilisation as a method of family planning. Awareness on benefits and ways of family planning will help to control overpopulation, increase life expectancy and reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality. The aim of the study was to identify the knowledge of married women on birth spacing methods visiting the outpatient department of tertiary hospital at Mangaluru. Non-probability sampling technique was used to select 323 married women. The baseline characteristics showed that 36.6% of subjects were in the age group of 32–38 years, 41.9% were Hindus and 65.6% were educated up to SSLC. About 42.9% of the subjects were multigravida and 37.5% subjects were married for <5 years. The findings also revealed that majority of the subjects (78%) were not using birth spacing method at the time the data collection was done for this study and 59.4% did not have previous information on birth spacing methods. About 22% of the subjects had an average knowledge, whereas 78% had good knowledge about birth spacing method. Although many subjects had good knowledge on birth spacing, majority were not using any birth spacing methods. Spreading awareness on birth spacing as well as encouraging them to choose any one method prevents unplanned and untimely as well as high-risk pregnancies.

Knowledge on Vitamin D Deficiency among Antenatal Women in a View to Prepare Information Guide Sheet

AbstractVitamin D is essential to maintain bone health, playing a key role in bone mineralization. Severe vitamin D deficiency in children results in rickets. As stores of vitamin D in newborns are dependent on maternal vitamin D status, vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy leads to infant vitamin D deficiency and thus increases risk of rickets. Objectives: To assess the knowledge regarding Vitamin D deficiency and to find the association of knowledge score and demographic variables. Materials and Methods: A descriptive approach was adopted for this study. The study was conducted in OBG outpatient department of tertiary Hospital at Mangaluru. The study sample was 100 antenatal women. A knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data regarding knowledge on vitamin D deficiency. Result: In this study 65% of antenatal women had average knowledge, 34% antenatal women had poor knowledge and single antenatal women had good knowledge on vitamin D deficiency. The knowledge in the area of complication to the fetus was 38%, knowledge in the other areas were daily requirements 56%, prevention 52% and signs and symptoms 48%. Interpretation and conclusion: After conducting the study the result showed that, majority of the antenatal women had average knowledge regarding vitamin D deficiency. For further improvement of the knowledge, antenatal women were provided with an information guide sheet (pamphlet).
