An Analysis of Global Surgery Opportunities in American Otolaryngology Residency Programs.

To depict the current state of global surgery opportunities in United States ACGME-approved Otolaryngology residency programs and compare the characteristics of programs with and without these opportunities. In this cross-sectional analysis, websites of ACGME-accredited Otolaryngology residency programs were analyzed for information on program size, rank, age, and geographic region as obtained through the Doximity platform in 2023. Additional parameters were obtained for programs listing global surgery opportunities such as funding, faculty oversight, location/region, focus, and relationship to the community served. Data were tabulated and analyzed in Microsoft Excel and Stata. Of the 131 ACGME-accredited Otolaryngology residency programs, 26 (20%) of programs advertised a global surgery opportunity. Nine (35%) of these promoted funding, 15 (58%) offered a clinical focus, one (4%) offered a research focus, and 10 (38%) offered a combined approach. The Midwest region had the most programs with global surgery opportunities (n = 8, 31%). Less than half (42%) of programs had an established partnership with local partners within low and middle-income countries (LMICs). When comparing programs, the average Doximity rank, average program age, and average program size of programs that offered global surgery opportunities was significantly higher than those that did not (37.2 vs. 71.5, 54 vs. 41, 19.5 vs. 13.7; all p < 0.05). Approximately one-fifth of Otolaryngology training programs have a global surgery opportunity. Programs that offer these opportunities had a higher Doximity ranking, older program age, and a larger trainee cohort. Use of Soft Cervical Collar Improves Surgeon Ergonomics During Simulated Otologic Surgery.

To determine whether surgeon use of a soft cervical collar during endoscopic and microscopic otologic surgery is feasible and impacts surgeon ergonomics as measured by inertial sensors. Prospective crossover trial. US-based otolaryngology training program. Otolaryngology residents and fellows. Therapeutic-use of a soft cervical collar during simulated otologic surgery. Time spent in high-risk angles of neck and back flexion and extension; average angle of neck flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral bending; validated assessment of neck pain; average daily phone use. Fifteen subjects met criteria for inclusion. Ten of 15 (67%) were male. Seven of 15 (47%) were postgraduate year 1-2. Seven of 15 (47%) reported a history of neck pain. None reported prior spinal steroid injections or surgery. Across all subjects, use of the soft cervical collar significantly reduced time spent in high-risk angles of neck flexion/extension during both endoscopic (56% vs. 35%, p < 0.05) and microscopic (60% vs. 32%, p < 0.05) otologic surgery. There was no effect on back flexion or extension. There was no difference in time spent in high-risk neck or back angles between endoscopic and microscopic surgery. Average angles of neck or back flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation were not significantly different for subgroups with more operative experience, increased phone use, perception of good posture, or history of neck pain. Use of a soft cervical collar during simulated otologic surgery significantly reduced time spent in high-risk neck positions. These data support feasibility of soft collar use during otologic surgery and hold promise for reduction in the high rates of neck pain reported by neurotologists. Predicting Resident Competence for Otolaryngology Key Indicator Procedures.

Competency-based surgical education requires practical assessments and meaningful benchmarks. In otolaryngology, key indicator procedure (KIP) minima are indicators of surgical exposure during training, yet it remains unknown how many times trainees must be evaluated on KIPs to ensure operative competence. Herein, we used Bayesian mixed effects models to compute predicted performance expectations for KIPs. From November 2017 to September 2021, a smartphone application (SIMPL OR) was used by attendings at five otolaryngology training programs to rate resident operative performance after each case on a five-level scale. Bayesian mixed effects models were used to estimate the probability that postgraduate year (PGY) 3, 4, or 5 trainees would earn a "practice-ready" (PR) rating on a subsequent evaluation based on their previously earned PR ratings for each KIP. Probabilities of earning a subsequent PR rating were examined for interpretability, and cross-validation was used to assess predictive validity. A total of 842 assessments of KIPs were submitted by 72 attendings for 92 residents PGY 2-5. The predictive model had an average Area Under the Receiver Operating Curve of 0.77. The number of prior PR ratings that senior residents needed to attain a 95% probability of earning a PR rating on a subsequent evaluation was estimated for each KIP. For example, for mastoidectomies, PGY4 residents needed to earn 10 PR ratings whereas PGY5 residents needed 4 PR ratings on average to have a 95% probability of attaining a PR rating on a subsequent evaluation. Two-Year Interview and Match Outcomes of Otolaryngology Preference Signaling.

To present the first year-over-year data comparison of preference signaling for residency interviews in the otolaryngology application marketplace. Cross-sectional study conducted over 2 application cycles. Otolaryngology training programs in the United States. Otolaryngology residency applicants were invited to participate in preference signaling during the 2021 and 2022 application cycles. Submissions were collected using a web-based interface. The distribution of signals among programs was evaluated descriptively and in relationship to Doximity program reputation rankings. Surveys were sent to applicants to assess general attitudes and the number of interview invitations received from signaled and nonsignaled programs. Surveys were sent to programs to evaluate use of signals and the impact on match results. Programs received a range of signals, from 0 to 66, with 50% of signals going to 24% of programs in 2022, which was similarly found in 2021. Programs of higher rank tended to receive more signals. Overall, >87% of surveyed applicants received an interview offer from at least 1 program that they signaled. In 2021 and 2022, applicants were 2.6 times more likely to get an interview from a signaled program than a comparator nonsignaled program. A greater positive impact on interview offer rate was seen for less competitive applicants. Signaling was viewed favorably by the majority of surveyed applicants and programs. Preference signaling for otolaryngology residency interviews demonstrates a promising mechanism to improve applicant visibility to programs during the application cycle. This impact is consistent over 2 application cycles.

Geographic Distribution of Otolaryngology Training Programs and Potential Opportunities for Strategic Program Growth.

To characterize the geographic distribution of US otolaryngology residents based on geographical population density to determine current status and identify potential opportunities for otolaryngology residency program expansion. The locoregional population of otolaryngology residency programs was analyzed (as defined by the US Census) and the number of resident trainees per 100,000 people in each region was calculated. Otolaryngology residency program location was determined by mailing address, and program size was determined by AAMC public data. The average metropolitan city in the United States contained 2.07 otolaryngology trainees per 100,000 people. Cities with low trainee numbers per population included Phoenix, AZ (0.20 trainees per 100,000 people); Las Vegas, NV (0.26 per 100,000); Dallas, TX (0.26 per 100,000), Atlanta, GA (0.33 per 100,000); and Miami, FL (0.34 per 100,000). Comparing otolaryngology to other surgical subspecialties demonstrated similar distributions. Metropolitan centers with a population over 1 million without full academic representation in otolaryngology were also identified and included Charlotte, NC; Orlando, FL; Austin, TX; Providence, RI; Jacksonville, FL; Raleigh, NC; and Grand Rapids, MI. Strategic residency training program expansion should be considered in cities that exhibit a low trainee to population ratio. Although many factors ultimately determine program expansion or development of new training programs, this study provides substantiated population data describing where expansion could be prioritized. Training Surgeon Scholars: Grant Writing Workshops During Residency.

Surgical residents may have limited experience with grant writing even though it is an important skill for academic physicians. We describe a novel curriculum on the conduct of research and grant literacy delivered at a single otolaryngology training program over 5 years. This workshop series included preparing a draft grant and conducting a mock grant review committee. In a survey of past participants (71% response rate), 91% found the workshops useful for grant writing or reviewing, and many used or planned to use the draft grants for real grant applications. The average number of American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation CORE grants submitted and successfully funded increased among residents at this program in the 4 years after the introduction of the workshop series as compared with the 4 years before. Further improvements continue to be made to the curriculum based on resident feedback.

Gender Distribution in Otolaryngology Training Programs

A cross-sectional analysis of current otolaryngology programs, presence of female chairs, program directors, faculty and residents in 2019 was performed. The gender of the program director, departmental chair, number of female faculty, number of residents within each program, and the gender distribution of listed residents was determined by visiting each otolaryngology training program's website.

Factors affecting operative autonomy and performance during otolaryngology training: A multicenter trial.

ObjectiveSurgical education is changing in an era of new regulations and evolving training cultures. We sought to understand the factors that affect operative experiences during otolaryngology residency.MethodsFrom December 2019 to December 2020, five otolaryngology training programs used the SIMPL OR smartphone application to evaluate residents after each operation. Residents and attendings rated the trainee's autonomy on a 4‐level Zwisch scale, performance on a 5‐level scale, and case complexity on a 3‐level scale. We examined associations between ratings of autonomy and performance with variables including postgraduate year (PGY), case complexity, gender, week of the academic year (AY), and whether multiple procedures were logged.Results78 attendings and 92 residents logged 2984 evaluations. PGY level and week of the AY were positively associated with attending ratings of autonomy and performance (PGY3 vs. PGY2: B = 0.63, p < .001 for autonomy and B = 1.05, p < .001 for performance; week of the AY: B = 0.013, p = .002 for autonomy; B = 0.025, p < .001 for performance). Multiple procedures logged and increasing case complexity were negatively associated with attending ratings (multiple procedures: B = −0.19, p = .04 for autonomy and B = −0.48, p < .001 for performance; hardest vs. easiest 1/3 of cases: B = −1.01, p < .001 for autonomy and B = −0.59, p < .001 for performance). Attending and trainee genders were not associated with attending ratings of autonomy or performance.ConclusionResident autonomy and performance were positively associated with PGY level and week of the academic year, and negatively associated with case complexity and multiple procedures. These findings highlight the need to align training level with case complexity to promote quality operative experiences.Level of Evidence2.

Multi-institutional Study of Otolaryngology Resident Intraoperative Experiences for Key Indicator Procedures.

There is concern that current otolaryngology residents may not receive adequate surgical training. We aimed to characterize residents' surgical experiences at 5 academic centers performing the 14 key indicator procedures (KIPs) outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Prospective study. Five otolaryngology training programs. Data were gathered from December 2019 to December 2020 with a smartphone application from the Society for Improving Medical Professional Learning. After each operation, residents and faculty rated trainee autonomy on a 4-level Zwisch scale and performance on a 5-level modified Dreyfus scale. Residents and attendings (n = 92 and 78, respectively) logged 2984 evaluations. Attending ratings of resident autonomy and performance increased with training level (P < .001). Resident self-assessments of autonomy and performance were lower than paired attending assessments (P < .001). Among attending evaluations of KIPs performed by senior residents (postgraduate year 4 or 5), 55% of cases were performed with meaningful autonomy (passive help or supervision only). Similarly, attendings rated 55% of these cases as a practice-ready or exceptional performance. Senior residents had meaningful autonomy for ≥50% of cases for most KIPs, with the exception of flaps and grafts (40%), pediatric/adult airway (39%), and stapedectomy/ossiculoplasty (33%). Similarly, senior residents received practice-ready or exceptional performance ratings for ≥50% of cases across all KIPs other than pediatric/adult airway (42%) and stapedectomy/ossiculoplasty (33%). In this multicenter study, resident surgical autonomy and performance varied across otolaryngology KIPs. The development of nationwide benchmarks will help programs and residents set educational goals. 2.

Flexible Bronchoscopy Simulation as a Tool to Improve Surgical Skills in Otolaryngology Residency.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the benefits of simulation to teach flexible bronchoscopy.Study DesignA prospective cohort study to assess the bronchoscopic skills of residents in an otolaryngology training program using a commercially available bronchoscopy simulator.SettingTertiary care otolaryngology residency program.MethodsThirty-two otolaryngology residents and 4 expert faculty across 2 academic institutions were assessed on 3 flexible bronchoscopy tasks: diagnostic bronchoscopy, foreign body removal, and tracheal lesion biopsy. Performance was evaluated with a modified version of the validated Bronchoscopy Skills and Tasks Assessment Tool. At 1 of the 2 academic institutions, an additional tool was implemented to evaluate the simulator.ResultsThere was a correlation between postgraduate training year and time taken to complete tasks, including bronchoscopy, foreign body extraction, and passing through the glottis (P < .001, P = .04, and P < .01, respectively). There was a significant difference between residents and faculty laryngologists for a range of skills and tasks, including percentage of time in middle lumen, contact with bronchial walls, inadvertent esophagus entry, and biopsy of healthy tissue (P < .001, P = .003, P < .001, and P < .001). Additionally, increasing postgraduate level was correlated with a higher percentage of time in the center of the lumen and reduced time to task completion (P = .05 and P < .001). Of 32 residents, 20 evaluated the simulator on its realism, with an average score of 4.1 of 5.ConclusionThe commercially available flexible bronchoscopy simulator provides a valid assessment of bronchoscopic skill and is a useful tool for practicing bronchoscopy in a safe, controlled environment.Level of EvidenceIndividual cohort study.

Changes in Otolaryngology Residency During COVID-19 Times.

Impact of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on resident training programs is little known and even lesser studied. Residents work simultaneously in Corona virus induced disease (COVID) and non-COVID environments. Partial to complete shutdown of elective services have affected resident training significantly. This article describes changes brought about in Otolaryngology training program in a medical college hospital located in south India.

Pediatric Otolaryngology Training Program and Surgical Exposure in Western Province, Saudi Arabia; Toward Surgical Competency in Pediatric Otolaryngology

Introduction: King Abdulaziz University, in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University, has had a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship program in place since 2013, but no clear competency surgical caseload has been identified. Objective: To review the surgical load at the otolaryngology department in Saudi Arabia and to compare the currently implemented fellowship program with international standards. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study performed in King Abdulaziz University (KAU) hospital and King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University hospital. The number of otolaryngology surgeries was collected from the hospitals’ medical records for all patients &lt;18 years who underwent surgical interventions from 2013 to 2018. The data collected were compared with the accreditation council for graduate medical education (ACGME) international benchmarks. Results: The average annual number of procedures performed versus benchmarks were 10.2 Vs. 20 for congenital anomalies procedures (p=0.003), 15.7 Vs. 12 for head and neck surgeries (p=0.231), 3.4 Vs. 30 for otology procedures (p&lt;0.001), 11.8 Vs. 5 for closed airway procedures for children&lt;3 years (p=0.088), 16.8 Vs. 5 for endoscopic airway procedures for children&gt;3 years (p&lt;0.001), 9.4 Vs. 8 for open airway procedures (p=0.439), 172.2 Vs. 50 for endoscopic interventions (p=0.006), 34.6Vs. 40 for rhinology procedures (p=0.189) and 2.8 Vs. 5 for facial plastic surgeries (p&lt;0.001). Conclusion: The number of surgical endoscopic airway procedures and head and neck surgeries meets the international benchmarks, whereas procedures of congenital anomalies, otology, rhinology and facial plastics do not meet the international benchmarks within a single year, so a reduction of the two-year fellowship to one year would not be appropriate.

Twice as Nice: How Doubling Otolaryngology Rotation Time Affects the Intern Experience Nationwide.

Describe the current state of otolaryngologic residency training with recent changes to the program requirements by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) which increased the amount of time on intern year otolaryngology rotations from 3 to 6 months. A cross-sectional study was performed and recruitment was done via personalized email sent to program coordinators of 113 ACGME-accredited otolaryngology training programs within the Unites States. The message requested a breakdown of the amount of time and specialty in which first year otolaryngologic residents rotated. Interval follow ups were sent at 3 and 6 months for coordinators who had not responded. Response rate was 79.7% (90/113). General surgery and surgical intensive care unit were the two most common non-otolaryngologic rotations (92.2% and 96.6% respectively) while ophthalmology and radiation oncology were the least common at 7.8% each. All first year residents spend time on an inpatient otolaryngologic rotation, while 30.7% spend time on outpatient rotations. The most common subspecialties were head and neck oncology (40.0%) followed by pediatric otolaryngology (36.0%). Otolaryngologic training continues to become more slanted towards specialty-specific training and a concurrent reduction in "off-service" rotations. General inpatient services still predominate the intern year both inter- and intra-departmentally. These data provide insight into the training environment of the otolaryngologic trainees set to graduate residency for the first time this year.

Clinical Radiographic Predictors of Response to Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

To determine if clinically acquired cephalometric measurements, specifically soft palate size, can predict hypoglossal nerve stimulation outcomes. Combined prospective cohort study and retrospective review. US sleep otolaryngology training program. Adults with obstructive sleep apnea and apneahypopnea index greater than 15 events/h who underwent hypoglossal nerve stimulation. Eligible subjects had diagnostic preoperative sleep studies and full-night efficacy postoperative studies for analysis. Lateral neck x-rays were obtained as part of routine clinical care and measured for key cephalometric variables by trained head and neck radiologists. Continuous variables were compared using the Student t test, while χ2 testing was used for categorical variables. Fifty-one patients met all study criteria. On average, patients were white, middle aged, and overweight. Following hypoglossal nerve stimulation, the overall cohort achieved a significant apnea-hypopnea index reduction from 36.7 events/h to 20.6 events/h (P < .01) and a response rate of 47% (defined as apnea-hypopnea index reduction >50% and apnea-hypopnea index <20 events/h). On average, therapy responders had significantly thinner soft palates than nonresponders (13.4 ± 3.8 mm vs 16.0 ± 3.4 mm, P = .045). Patient-specific anatomic factors, specifically soft palate thickness, may help identify optimal candidates for hypoglossal nerve stimulation. A larger, prospective study including both anatomic and physiologic variables is required to validate these findings.

Laryngology Education in Otolaryngology Residency Programs – A Pilot Study

To evaluate resident exposure to laryngology during otolaryngology residency. An anonymous, web-based, multiple choice, electronic questionnaire was sent to all 125 accredited otolaryngology training programs in the United States to distribute to otolaryngology senior residents (postgraduate year [PGY]-4, PGY-5). Sixty-four residents (33 PGY-4 and 31 PGY-5) responded to the survey. 85.9% had had training in strobovideolaryngoscopy. Only 7.8% of residents had had training in performing or interpreting objective voice measurements, and 26.6% had had training in performing or interpreting laryngeal electromyography. 42.2% of residents had participated in a laryngeal surgical laboratory. Only 19.4% of residents had attended a national laryngology meeting during the preceding 12 months. 92.2% of residents reported that their program had a laryngologist attending, 95.3% had a speech-language pathologist in their department, and 21.9% had a laryngology fellow. 87.5% of residents reported that they do not have to transfer any laryngeal cases to another facility. Exposure to microdirect laryngoscopy, vocal fold mass excision with microflap technique, type I thyroplasty, and subglottic stenosis repair was (100%, 92.2%, 84.4%, and 96.9%, respectively). 54.7% of residents were exposed to arytenoidectomy, and 14.1% of residents were exposed to reduction of arytenoid dislocation/subluxation. 45.3% of residents reported that they had an interest in music, 25% had an interest in singing, 14.1% had an interest in acting. More comprehensive laryngeal education could be achieved during otolaryngology residency by increasing exposure to objective voice measurements, laryngeal electromyography, and laryngeal surgery, especially arytenoid procedures including dislocation/subluxation reduction and arytenoidectomy.

"Filler-ins" to Physicians: History of the Otolaryngology Training Program at Mayo Clinic.

The first officially recognized otolaryngology resident at Mayo Clinic started training in 1908. In the following years, the residency program evolved through emerging national standards and regulations for medical education, declining and resurgent interest in the specialty, and radical changes in otolaryngology as a practice. This article details the growth of the Mayo Clinic otolaryngology residency program, often in the words of the pioneering physicians involved in the process, from “filler-ins” for the staff to today’s nationally recognized program.

Optimal Timing of Entry-Level Otolaryngology Simulation.

ObjectiveAppropriate timing of subspecialty simulation is critical to maximize learner benefit and guide resource utilization. We aimed to determine optimal timing of a simulation-based curriculum designed to teach entry-level procedural skills for otolaryngology residency.Study DesignSimulation curriculum intervention tested among 3 comparison groups of varying clinical levels.SettingAcademic otolaryngology training program and medical school.Subjects and MethodsWe developed a simulation-based technical skills curriculum incorporating the following task trainers: flexible laryngoscopy, peritonsillar abscess drainage, and myringotomy and tube insertion. Preclinical medical students (n = 40), subintern rotators (n = 35), and midyear interns (n = 8) completed the simulation-based curriculum. Pre- and postintervention knowledge/confidence and “level appropriateness” were rated on a 5-point Likert scale, and effect size was calculated.ResultsOverall self-reported knowledge/confidence levels improved in all 3 groups preintervention (1.05, 2.15, 3.17) to postintervention (2.79, 3.45, 4.38, respectively; all P < .01). Preclinical medical students uniformly reported very little to no familiarity with the procedures prior to the curriculum, while interns approached independence following the intervention. Large effect sizes were seen in all tasks for preclinical students (d = 3.13), subinterns (d = 1.46), and interns (d = 2.14). Five-point Likert scale measures of level appropriateness (1 = too challenging, 5 = too easy) for preclinical students, subinterns, and interns were 2.70 (95% CI, 2.56-2.84), 3.11 (95% CI, 2.97-3.25), and 3.75 (95% CI, 3.35-4.15), respectively.ConclusionSubinternship may represent the optimal timing for entry-level skills simulation training. The proposed curriculum shows utility for clinical levels ranging from medical students to postgraduate year 1 resident levels, with large effect sizes for all tested groups.

Assessment of Otolaryngology Residency Training Program in Iran: Perspectives of Faculty Members and Recently Graduated Medical Students.

There is limited evidence regarding the quality of otolaryngology residency programs in Iran. Regarding this, the present study aimed to assess some aspects of otolaryngology residency program in the field of otology in Iran based on the perspectives of faculty members and graduates. This study was conducted on 105 recent graduates and 30 faculty members and/or program directors in otolaryngology using two self-administered questionnaires. While the faculty members believed that a resident should work on at least 5.4 temporal bone surgeries on average, the actual number was 2.49. Tympanoplasty was assigned the highest rate of satisfaction by the recent graduates, whereas the lowest score belonged to middle ear exploration, ossiculoplasty, and stapes surgery. Only 53.6% of the graduates stated that there was an organized training curriculum in temporal laboratory. The recent graduates reported to have more frequent experiences of performing usual otology operations. However, they had fewer experiences of performing more advanced surgeries. The recently graduated subjects had a significantly low level of satisfaction with their competencies in carrying out more complex types of otology surgeries. High prevalence of otology surgeries in Iran provides valuable opportunities for training otolaryngology residents to achieve an acceptable level of competency. However, the results of this study strongly suggest the necessity of quality improvement both in teaching-learning and assessment processes in otolaryngology training programs.

Educational Exposure to Transgender Patient Care in Otolaryngology Training.

Gender dysphoria is estimated to occur in over 1 million people in the United States. With decreasing stigma regarding the transgender population, it is likely more patients will seek medical and surgical gender transition as parts of their treatment. However, otolaryngologists may lack training in gender-confirming surgery. This study aims to determine the current state of transgender-related education in the United States otolaryngology training programs and to evaluate trainee perceptions regarding the importance of such training. A cross-sectional survey was performed among the United States otolaryngology training programs. A representative sample of 22 training programs divided within 4 US Census regions completed a cross-sectional 9-question survey between March and May 2017. Respondents were queried regarding demographics, transgender curricular exposure (didactic and/or clinical), and perceived importance of training in transgender patient care. A total of 285 trainees responded (69.3% response rate). Thirty percent of respondents reported education on or direct exposure to transgender care during residency. Among those with experiences in gender-confirming surgery, more than half were exposed to facial (masculinization or feminization) or pitch alteration surgery. Overall, the majority of respondents believed training in gender-confirming surgery is somewhat important and 63.2% supported incorporation of transgender patient care in existing subspecialty fellowship training. Less than one-third of otolaryngology trainees are exposed to transgender patient care. The majority of trainees endorsed the importance of residency and subspecialty fellowship training in gender-confirming surgery. To better serve the transgender population, formal didactics on gender-confirming surgery should be offered.

Current Wellness Practices among Otolaryngology Residencies.

Objectives To determine if and how resident emotional health is monitored among otolaryngology training programs and to determine what wellness resources are available to otolaryngology residents. Study Design Survey. Setting Tertiary academic medical centers. Subjects and Methods An anonymous 50-item survey sent via REDCap to the 107 allopathic American otolaryngology program directors (PDs). Results The response rate was 44%, of whom 47.7% regularly surveyed emotional health among their residents. A total of 33.3% used the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 61.9% used another scale or did not know. Eighty-one percent of surveys were anonymous, and 45% surveyed yearly, which was mandatory in only 33.3% of programs. Whether surveys took place was not related to PD or program demographics. In total, 72.7% of programs utilized faculty mentors for their residents; 88.6% had a wellness lecture within the last year; and 74.5% had no-cost mental health resources with extended hours as required by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education. Within the last year, 31.8% had provided seminars in mindfulness or meditation. Seventy-five percent had financially supported social events for their residents; <15% supported athletic or mental wellness activities. Healthy foods were provided by 36.4%, and 67.4% of programs gave their residents days off in addition to vacation days for medical or dental appointments. Residents were allowed a mean 18.76 vacation days and 3.73 additional wellness days. Conclusion There is no standard practice for measuring and monitoring emotional health by otolaryngology programs. Programs struggle to offer interventions to prevent burnout, with 25% noncompliant with the wellness requirements mandated by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education.
