Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of osteoporosis knowledge, self-esteem, and osteoporosis preventive health promotion behavior targeting middle-aged women, and to determine the impact of osteoporosis knowledge and self-esteem on osteoporosis preventive health promotion behavior.
 Methods Data were collected an online survey targeting 115 middle-aged women aged between 40 and 65 in one region from October 16 to October 29, 2023 using. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 26.0 statistical program.
 Results Osteoporosis knowledge was found to have a statistically significant positive correlation with osteoporosis preventive health promotion behavior (r=.837, p<.001). As a result of hierarchical regression analysis, good subjective health status (β=.85, p<.001) and knowledge of osteoporosis (β=.34, p<.001) were significantly found to be factors influencing osteoporosis preventive health promotion behavior, and the explanatory power was 23.2% (F=16.71, p<.001).
 Conclusions We recommend developing and actively utilizing various educational programs to increase middle-aged women's subjective health status and knowledge of osteoporosis, and conducting research to confirm the effectiveness through program application.

Nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding osteoporosis prevention and its correlation with their nutritional behaviors.

Nurses have good opportunities to communicate with osteoporotic patients and the public as well as convey osteoporosis prevention education to them. Therefore, nurses require specific knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP), and desirable nutritional behaviors for osteoporosis prevention and treatment strategies. Little is known about the KAP for osteoporosis prevention and nutritional behaviors among nurses in Iran. The present study was conducted to evaluate nurses' KAP and nutritional behaviors for osteoporosis prevention. This cross-sectional study included 195 nurses working in three hospitals in southeastern Iran. Nurses were selected using a stratified random sampling method between April and June 2020. The data collection tools included questionnaires of KAP and nutritional behaviors to prevent osteoporosis. According to the findings, nurses' knowledge regarding osteoporosis prevention was high level (20.23 ± 3.79) and their attitude (72.71 ± 6.97), practice (48.25 ± 6.38), and nutritional behavior scores (110.12 ± 13.68) were desirable. In addition, nurses' KAP regarding osteoporosis prevention was correlated with their nutritional behaviors (p = 0.001). Given the high levels of knowledge, desirable practices, and in Iranian nurses regarding the prevention of osteoporosis, they can play a significant role in changing KAP and nutritional behaviors of people to prevent this disease. To this end, educational and support programs should be implemented in clinical and community settings to develop a healthy lifestyle in the community.

Predicting osteoporosis preventive behaviors in middle-aged and older urban Shanghai residents: a health belief model-based path analysis in a multi-center population study.

Osteoporosis represents a significant health concern as a widespread metabolic bone condition. In this study, we aim to utilize path analysis to examine the intricate relationships among demographic information, Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs and osteoporosis preventive behavior among Shanghai residents over 40 years of age. A multi-center population study was conducted in 20 volunteer communities in Shanghai, China. Out of the 2,000 participants who volunteered, 1,903 completed the field survey. 56.0% of participants were females. Their mean age was 63.64 ± 10.30 years. The self-efficacy score among females (42.27 ± 15.82) was also significantly higher than that among males (40.68 ± 15.20). in the pathway analysis. In the path analysis preventive behaviors were significantly predicted by education (β = 0.082, p < 0.001), knowledge (β = 0.132, p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (β = 0.392, p < 0.001). This study highlights the importance of gender, education, knowledge and self-efficacy in promoting OP preventive behaviors using the Health Belief Model. The findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions to address the specific needs of different demographic groups.

Gender Disparities in Osteoporosis Knowledge, Health Beliefs and Preventive Behaviors in Najran City, Saudi Arabia.

Osteoporosis is a chronic bone disease affecting both men and women, but it is more prevalent in women. Promoting a healthy lifestyle among adults, particularly women, is crucial in preventing and reducing the osteoporosis impact. This study aimed to compare the osteoporosis knowledge, health beliefs and preventive behaviors among adult male and female in Najran city Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional study was performed on 516 males and 581 females in Najran City, Saudi Arabia, from January to April 2023. The data collection instrument is a self-reported online questionnaire consisting of basic data, the Osteoporosis Preventive Behavior (OPB) scale, the osteoporosis knowledge assessment tool, and the osteoporosis health belief scale. The results revealed that male participants had a higher OPB (26.70) than females (20.32). However, females have a higher knowledge (10.71), perceive themselves as more susceptible to osteoporosis (20.34) and had higher exercise barriers (20.11) compared to males (9.97, 18.79 and 19.20, respectively). Statistically significant correlations (p < 0.001) were observed between OPB, osteoporosis knowledge (r = 0.26), perceived susceptibility (r = 0.33), severity (r = 0.53), exercise (r = 0.54) and calcium (r = 0.33) benefits, exercise (r = 0.40) and calcium (r = 0.81) barriers and health motivation (r = 0.37). The study concluded significant disparities between males and females regarding osteoporosis-related knowledge, preventive behaviors, perceived susceptibility, severity, and exercise perceived barriers. The results suggest gender-based educational interventions to enhance OPB by addressing osteoporosis-related knowledge, perceived susceptibility, seriousness, benefits, and health motivation.

Determinant of Osteoporosis Preventive Behaviors among Perimenopausal Women: A Cross-Sectional Study to Explore the Role of Knowledge and Health Beliefs.

Osteoporosis is a silent chronic disease, and many people did not discover it until they were diagnosed with a fracture. Therefore, regular scanning and appropriate Osteoporosis Preventive Behaviors (OPB) are the management cornerstone. OPB is strongly affected by personal knowledge and health beliefs. This study explores the role of knowledge and health beliefs as determinants of OPB among perimenopausal women. This cross-sectional study was performed on 1075 perimenopausal women in Najran City, Saudi Arabia, from January 2023 to March 2023. The data collection instrument is a self-reported questionnaire consisting of basic data, the OPB scale, an osteoporosis knowledge assessment tool, and the osteoporosis health belief scale. The current study results showed that approximately one-quarter (27.8%) of the study participants had high OPB with an overall mean of 20.83 ± 5.08 grade. The group practicing high OPB demonstrated a higher knowledge mean (11.37 ± 2.99) than the low OPB group (9.93 ± 3.51). In addition, all health beliefs constructs significantly differed among the low and high OPB groups (p ˂ 0.05). The participant's age, occupational status, educational level, attendance of training courses, and history of bone fractures were significantly associated with high OPB. Osteoporosis knowledge, perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, exercises' perceived benefits, and health motivations are positive predictors of high OPB (p ˂ 0.05). The study concluded that osteoporosis-related knowledge and health beliefs-especially perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, exercises' perceived benefits, and health motivations-are positive predictors of high OPB. The health belief model can be an effective tool used to determine high-risk groups who practice low OPB and build need-based educational interventions.

Persuasive Narratives About Osteoporosis: Effects of Protagonist Competence, Narrator Point of View, and Subjective Risk.

Narratives have been widely acknowledged as a powerful persuasion tool in health promotion and education. Recently, great efforts have been devoted to identifying message components and causal pathways that maximize a narrative's persuasion power. Specifically, we investigated how narrator point of view and readers' subjective relative risk moderate the effects of protagonist competence on intentions to adopt osteoporosis-prevention behaviors, and proposed identification with the protagonist, self-referencing, and fear arousal as three mediators explaining the effect. Women aged 35 to 55, still young enough to reduce osteoporosis risk, read a narrative in which the 60-year-old female character reflects on either taking actions to prevent osteoporosis (competent protagonist) or failing to do so, resulting in osteoporosis (incompetent protagonist) (N = 563). The narratives were told from either the first- or third-person point of view. We found that women who perceived themselves to be at lower risk for developing osteoporosis relative to their peers identified more with the competent protagonist. For women at higher perceived risk, the competent and incompetent protagonists elicited similar levels of identification. Identification was higher when the protagonist's story was told from the first-person perspective, but only for the incompetent protagonist narrative. Identification, self-referencing, and fear arousal played important mediating roles. Implications for theory development and practice are examined.

Interventions Preventing Osteoporosis in Primary Care: A Systematic Review

Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to find interventions in primary health care that would increase osteoporosis prevention behaviors. &#x0D; Methods: Systematic searches of CINAHL, Eric, Medline complete, PsycInfo, Ovid, Web of Science, Cochrane Library (N=1270). A total of 17 published articles met our inclusion criteria. English-language articles published between January 2000-May 2019, in primary care settings, participants with healthy or risk of osteoporosis, investigated osteoporosis preventing behaviors. The data extracted included population characteristics, diagnosis, mean age and setting, intervention and control groups, and outcomes of significance to the review question and specific objectives. In this review, a meta-analysis could not be performed due to the heterogeneity of the data. &#x0D; Results: The majority of studies have been found to use multiple strategies to prevent osteoporosis. Eight studies focused only on the female gender and seven studies focused only on older adults. Predictors of osteoporosis prevention behaviors in women in their 20s and 30s.

There is a need to provide insight into the management and health care fields for the prevention of osteoporosis in young women by analyzing the factors affecting the prevention of osteoporosis. This descriptive survey aimed to identify the predictors of osteoporosis prevention behaviors in women in their 20s and 30s by examining their body mass index (BMI), weight control experience, osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis self-efficacy, and osteoporosis prevention behaviors.One hundred fifty participants were conveniently sampled, and data were collected from August to September 2020. Participants in their 20s and 30s completed a questionnaire concerning the general characteristics, osteoporosis-related characteristics, osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis self-efficacy, and osteoporosis prevention behaviors.Approximately 82.6% of the participants had at least 1 type of weight control experience. The mean participants’ age and BMI were 28.94 (±5.32) years and 21.62 (±3.21) kg/m2, respectively. No significant differences in weight control experience according to the participants’ characteristics were observed. However, significant differences were noted in BMI and age, osteoporosis knowledge and educational background, osteoporosis prevention behavior and educational background, and household type. Osteoporosis prevention behaviors were significantly positively correlated with weight control experience, osteoporosis knowledge, and osteoporosis self-efficacy. Osteoporosis prevention behaviors increased with increasing osteoporosis self-efficacy (β = 0.53, P < .001), among multiperson households (β = 0.20, P = .003), and among those with a weight control experience (β = 0.18, P = .007), and these factors explained 47.2% of the variance (F = 23.11, P < .001).Based on the study results, further studies are needed to identify and analyze the predictors of osteoporosis prevention behaviors in women to increase the awareness of osteoporosis and osteoporosis prevention and management in this group and expand similar efforts.

Knowledge, Beliefs, and Preventive Behaviors Regarding Osteoporosis among University Students: Scoping Review

Context: Osteoporosis is a universally growing health problem. Adequate calcium intake and physical activity, alongside a high level of knowledge and health beliefs, play a crucial role in preventing or delaying diseases.&#x0D; Aim: This scoping review provides an overview of university students' prevailing knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors regarding osteoporosis.&#x0D; Methods: CINHAL, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases were searched to cover the period between 2014 to 2019. Twenty-seven articles were selected out of 4078 were retrieved. The following searching terms were used: (osteoporosis knowledge OR osteoporosis awareness) AND osteoporosis beliefs AND (osteoporosis practices OR osteoporosis behaviors OR calcium intake OR physical activity) AND (osteoporosis OR bone mineral density) AND (nursing students OR university students OR undergraduate students OR college-age students OR young adults). Finally, the level of osteoporosis knowledge, health beliefs, preventive behaviors, the relationship between practices/behaviors and lifestyle with bone health, and the educational intervention's significant/nonsignificant positive effect on the students' osteoporosis knowledge, the prevailed beliefs, and the level of engagement in the osteoporosis preventive behaviors were documented.&#x0D; Results: Most articles demonstrate that the students' osteoporosis knowledge was insufficient and seriously lacking in osteoporosis's perceived susceptibility and severity. This finding clarified that most students were not adequately engaging in the osteoprotective preventive behaviors (Physical activity ad Ca intake). Also, the finding indicates that following a healthy lifestyle and engaging in osteoprotective behaviors positively affect BMD and vice versa.&#x0D; Conclusion: The lack of osteoporosis awareness among the university students and the low perception of osteoporosis susceptibility and severity explains why most participants are not engaged in osteoporosis preventive behaviors due to the strong influence of personal beliefs, perceptions, and misconceptions. Therefore, it is important to design educational programs targeting these groups to raise awareness and change their subsequent beliefs.

A preliminary study on the effects of an osteoporosis prevention program based on an Information-Motivation-Behavioral skill model in older adult women: A cluster randomized controlled trial

We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effects of an osteoporosis prevention program using the Information-Motivation-Behavioral skill (IMB) model in older adult women in this preliminary study. Korean women ≥65 years were randomly assigned to control (N=21) and intervention (N=23) groups. The intervention group participated in an IMB model-based, 12-week osteoporosis prevention program. The primary outcome was osteoporosis prevention behavior over time in both groups directly before, immediately after (post-test 1), and 4 weeks after (post-test 2) the intervention. Participants had a higher retention and attendance rate for the intervention, and the osteoporosis prevention behavior of the intervention group at post-test 1 and post-test 2 had significantly improved. The program based on the IMB model may be a feasible and effective intervention for osteoporosis prevention behavior in older adult women.

The effect of educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior aimed at mothers on osteoporosis prevention behaviors in lower secondary school female students.

BACKGROUND:Osteoporosis is mainly characterized by a low bone mineral density and a sharp architectural and biomechanical deterioration in bone tissue required to maintain bone homeostasis. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) can be considered as one of the leading theories when designing an evidence-based intervention. This study was carried out based on the TPB to determine the effect of an educational intervention aimed at mothers on the prevention of osteoporosis in female students.MATERIALS AND METHODS:A total of seventy mothers of lower secondary school students in Tehran, Iran, participated in this experimental study which was conducted in 2019–2020. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, namely experimental and control groups. Based on the TPB, a demographic and a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of five sections were used in order to collect data. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were confirmed before data collection. Four 45–60 min training programs were delivered to the subjects using the TPB. Data were collected before, immediately after, and 1 month following the training program. Finally, IBM SPSS Statistics 21 was used for statistical analysis.RESULTS:No significant difference was observed in terms of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and osteoporosis prevention-related behavior between the experimental and control groups before proceeding with the intervention (P > 0.05). However, the mean scores of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and behavior were significantly higher in the experimental group compared to those of the control group following the educational intervention (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:It can be concluded that such interventions based on the TPB can, in fact, produce a significant effect on osteoporosis prevention-related behaviors. Thus, it can serve as a useful model for planning educational interventions.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the loss of bone mass is at an alarming point, so that the bones lose their flexibility and strength. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge about osteoporosis and prevention of osteoporosis in premenopausal women in Cicantayan Village, Cicantayan Community Health Center, Sukabumi Regency. Osteoporosis is bone loss due to loss of mass in the bone which can increase the risk of fractures. Knowledge is a result of curiosity from the results of sensing. Attitude is a response to a stimulus. This type of research is correlational with a Cross Sectional approach. The population of this study were all premenopausal women 41-50 years old with a total of 469 people. The research sample amounted to 82 people taken by cluster random sampling. Data analysis using chi square. The results showed that knowledge about osteoporosis was good with behavior to prevent as many as 23 respondents (50.0 %). The chi square statistical test shows that the significance value of p = 0.027 &lt; a (0.05) so that H1 is accepted. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between knowledge about osteoporosis and osteoporosis prevention behavior in premenopausal women in Cicantayan Village, Cicantayan Health Center Work Area, Sukabumi Regency.

Effect of educational program based on theory of planned behavior on osteoporosis preventive behaviors: a randomized clinical trial

BackgroundThe prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing worldwide. Implementing educational programs is an important step in prevention of chronic diseases in the community setting. This study was conducted to assess the effect of educational program based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) on the osteoporosis preventive behaviors in middle-aged individuals.MethodsA randomized clinical trial was conducted on 64 middle-aged individuals presenting to primary care centers. A researcher-made questionnaire developed according to “a guide for compiling and analyzing the questionnaire based on TPB” was used for data collection. Random block sampling was applied to assign participants to control and intervention groups after ensuring the validity and reliability. An educational program on osteoporosis prevention was conducted in six educational sessions based on the TPB constructs for the intervention group in primary care centers. Control group received routine education about lifestyle changes including osteoporosis by primary care centers. Eight weeks after the intervention, the questionnaires were completed again and the data were analyzed using the SPSS V16 software.ResultsIndependent t-test found no significant difference in the mean score of knowledge, osteoporosis preventive behavior, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention between intervention and control groups before intervention (p > 0.05). After the intervention, however, a significant difference was found in the mean score of knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention between the cases in intervention and control groups (P < 0.05). In addition, based on repeated measurement ANOVA, the intervention had a significant effect on knowledge, preventive behaviors, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention (P < 0.05).ConclusionsThe results of the present study showed that implementation of an educational intervention based on the Theory of Planned Behavior significantly increased the knowledge along with all constructs of TPB in osteoporosis preventive behaviors.Trial registrationThis study was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials IRCT2017081735647N2 (11/10/2017).

Osteoporosis Preventive Behavior Among Female Healthcare Students in Da Nang, Vietnam

Background: Osteoporosis prevention at young ages is crucial to diminish the risk of the disease and its complication in later years of life. Having good osteoporosis knowledge and positive health belief may lead to better preventive behavior which then contributes to build and maintain bone health throughout life.&#x0D; Objective: To investigate knowledge, health belief, and behavior of osteoporosis prevention among female healthcare students.&#x0D; Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a public medical university in Da Nang of Vietnam. Four hundred participants were selected by applying the multistage sampling technique. Data were collected from May 2020 to June 2020 through the questionnaire that consists of 4 parts including the demographic data form, the osteoporosis knowledge assessment tool, the osteoporosis health belief scale, and the exercise and calcium behaviors scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation test.&#x0D; Results: Participants had poor osteoporosis knowledge (mean [SD], 37.8 [16.0]; range, 0 - 75) and low preventive behavior (mean [SD], 5.7 [3.5]; range, 0 - 25). Osteoporosis health belief was found at a moderate level with a mean (SD) of 126.7 (12.9) (range, 84 - 187). There were positive significant correlations between knowledge and health belief, knowledge and behavior of osteoporosis prevention (P &lt; .05).&#x0D; Conclusions: Osteoporosis preventive behavior of female healthcare students was low. Osteoporosis education programs should be developed for female healthcare students to improve their knowledge and health belief that would then lead to their better preventive behavior.&#x0D;

The association of osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs with preventive behaviors in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors

BackgroundPostmenopausal breast cancer survivors (PBCS) are at increased risk of bone loss and fractures due to age-related decline of estrogen, and this risk is compounded by aromatase inhibitor cancer therapy. Several patient-level targetable risk factors can mitigate osteoporosis risk; however, adequate health behavior and risk perception in this population are underreported. The goal of this study was to evaluate osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs and assess their association with engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors among PBCS.MethodsIn this cross-sectional descriptive study, early stage I–IIIA PBCS (ages 55–86 years) completed the Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz, Osteoporosis Health Beliefs Scale, and Osteoporosis Preventive Behaviors questionnaires. Participants who were non-English speaking or declined to participate were excluded. Clinical and sociodemographic information were obtained from chart review and baseline questionnaire, respectively. Fisher’s exact test, Student t-test, and Wilcoxon Mann–Whitney tests were used where appropriate to assess the association between knowledge and beliefs with engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors.ResultsThe mean participant age was 66.1 years with 20% self-reporting as non-Hispanic White, 40% non-Hispanic Black, 27% Hispanic, and 13% other. Approximately 83% of the cohort had estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and received a bone density scan within the last six years. Osteoporosis knowledge (10.5 ± 3.4), seriousness (14.9 ± 3.8), and susceptibility (14.0 ± 3.5) mean scores were low among PBCS. Most PBCS (75%) were adherent to calcium and vitamin D supplements, but only 47% reported engagement in strength-training exercises. Married/partnered, higher osteoporosis knowledge and health motivation scores were associated with strength-training exercise. After adjustment for marital status and osteoporosis knowledge, only health motivation score remained significantly associated with strength-training exercise (OR 5.56, 95% CI 1.35–22.93).ConclusionsPBCS are highly motivated to keep a healthy lifestyle despite limited osteoporosis knowledge, perceived risk, and susceptibility. However, < 50% participated in strength-training exercise. Our findings suggest that oncologic care should include osteoporosis and fracture prevention strategies, directed at encouraging cancer survivors to increase their engagement in osteoporosis preventive behaviors, particularly strength-training exercises.

Effects of a health-belief-model-based osteoporosis- and fall-prevention program on women at early old age

BackgroundElderly women are at high risk of osteoporosis and falls. Lifestyle modifications and regular check-ups are strongly recommended to promote their bone health. However, elderly women tend to perform low preventive behaviors due to physiological changes associated with aging. Education facilitating healthy behaviors is essential for older women. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a Health Belief Model (HBM)-based osteoporosis- and fall-prevention program could improve osteoporosis- and fall-prevention knowledge, self-efficacy, and health behaviors among women aged 65 to 74 years. MethodsThis study included an untreated control group with a pretest-posttest design. Women (n = 47) in the intervention group received four sessions of an HBM-based program within a 2-month period. Participants (n = 47) in the control group attended usual education sessions. ResultsWomen in the intervention group exhibited greater knowledge in exercise and diet for osteoporosis-prevention (t = 5.473, p < 0.001; t = 6.895, p < 0.001, respectively), fall-prevention knowledge (t = 2.354, p = 0.021), self-efficacy in exercise for osteoporosis-prevention (t = 2.736, p = 0.008), osteoporosis-prevention behavior of exercise, diet, and routine follow-ups (t = 3.019, p = 0.003; t = 2.705, p = 0.008; t = 2.368, p = 0.020, respectively), and fall-prevention behavior (t = 3.879, p < 0.001). ConclusionHBM-based osteoporosis- and fall-prevention program exhibited outstanding effectiveness in promoting osteoporosis and fall prevention among women at early old age. Further studies with more rigorous designs are needed to provide further evidence that supports this finding.

This cross-sectional study was carried out on 209 adolescent girls selected from high schools in the Quchan County in 2016 using path analysis by stratified sampling. The data was collected through ademographic questionnaire and a52-item researcher-made questionnaire, based on the BASNEF model constructs. The data was analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk test, bootstrapping, and path analysis. The average age of the students was 16.10 ±0.59. The results of path analysis showed that Model 1 matched the BASNEF model relationships completely; however, it could not predict osteoporosis preventive behaviors. The constructs of Model 2 (modified) was able to predict 50% of variances in osteoporosis preventive behaviors. There were positive and direct relationships between the following pairs of constructs: knowledge and attitudes (B=0.23, p<0.001); attitudes and the intention of osteoporosis preventive behaviors (B=0.37, p<0.001); subjective norms and the intention of osteoporosis preventive behaviors (B=0.53, p<0.001); behavioral intention and osteoporosis preventive behaviors (B=0.36, p<0.001); subjective norms and osteoporosis preventive behaviors (B=0.33, p<0.001), and enabling factors and osteoporosis preventive behaviors (B=0.29, p<0.001). The community health nurse can use the constructs of the BASNEF model to change the osteoporosis preventive behaviors like knowledge, attitudes subjective norms and enabling factors.

Promotion of osteoporosis-preventive behaviors in adolescents: Application of protection motivation theory.

BACKGROUND:Osteoporosis is considered a health problem that can be simply prevented by lifestyle modifications in adolescence. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of protection motivation theory (PMT)-based training on osteoporosis-preventive behaviors in female high school students in Zahedan, Iran.MATERIALS AND METHODS:The present quasi-experimental study was performed on 240 female high school students who were selected by a multistage sampling technique in Zahedan in 2019–2020. To collect the data, a multipart questionnaire was distributed among the participants in three stages, namely at the baseline, immediately, and 2 months after the intervention. This instrument consisted of demographic information, socioeconomic status, knowledge, PMT constructs, and preventive behaviors. The intervention group was subjected to educational content. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 22) by descriptive and analytical tests (i.e., Chi-square, independent t-test, and ANOVA).RESULTS:Based on the results, the intervention and control groups showed no significant difference in terms of the mean score of knowledge, theoretical constructs, and preventive behaviors at the baseline (P > 0.05). However, the two groups were significantly different in terms of the mentioned variables immediately and 2 months after the intervention (P = 0.001). Mean score of preventive behaviors, the two groups also demonstrated a significant difference (i.e., calcium intake, physical activity, and sunlight exposure) 2 months after the intervention, compared to before the intervention. (P = 0.001).CONCLUSION:The findings of the present study were indicative of the PMT effectiveness, which can, therefore, be used as a framework for designing educational programs regarding osteoporosis prevention.
