Propagation of a Realistic Magnetar Jet through a Binary Neutron Star Merger Medium and Implications for Short Gamma-Ray Bursts

The origin of short gamma-ray bursts is associated with outflows powered by the remnant of a binary neutron star merger. This remnant can be either a black hole or a highly magnetized, fast-spinning neutron star, also known as a magnetar. Here we present the results of two relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations aimed at investigating the large-scale dynamics and propagation of magnetar collimated outflows through the medium surrounding the remnant. The first simulation evolves a realistic jet by injecting external simulation data, while the second evolves an analytical model jet with similar properties for comparison. We find that both outflows remain collimated and successfully emerge through the static medium surrounding the remnant. However, they fail to attain relativistic velocities and only reach a mean maximum speed of ∼0.7c for the realistic jet and ∼0.6c for the analytical jet. We also find that the realistic jet has a much more complex structure. The lack of highly relativistic speeds, which makes these jets unsuitable as short gamma-ray burst sources, is due to numerical limitations and is not general to all possible magnetar outflows. A jet like the one we study, however, could give rise to or augment a blue kilonova component. In addition, it would make the propagation of a relativistic jet easier, should one be launched after the neutron star collapses into a black hole.

Spectral puzzle of the off-axis gamma-ray burst in GW170817

ABSTRACT Gravitational waves from a merger of two neutron stars (NSs) were discovered for the first time in GW170817, together with diverse electromagnetic counterparts, providing a direct clue to the origin of short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs). The associated sGRB 170817A was much fainter than typical, suggesting off-axis emission from a relativistic jet. However the observed prompt spectrum is inconsistent with the spectral (Amati) relation and causes the compactness problem in the simplest off-axis model. We suggest that this spectral and energetic puzzle of GRB170817A is explained if the origin of the off-axis emission arises from the off-centre jet. This emission location is generally created by the product of the rapidly declining (with angle) jet energy and the increasing beaming term. Hence the region of most luminous emission for an off-axis observer is neither the jet core around the primary axis, nor the line of sight at the viewing angle. The off-centre jet could be loaded with baryon or cocoon. The off-axis model predicts that roughly ${\sim } 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ events are brighter at smaller viewing angles than sGRB 170817A, although the exact event rate sensitively depends on uncertainties of the off-centre structure. The model also predicts outliers to Amati relation, providing future tests to reveal the central engine activities.

Gravitational-wave astrophysics from neutron star inspiral and coalescence

Prior to the observation of a double neutron star inspiral and merger, its possible implications were striking. Events whose light and gravitational waves are simultaneously detected could resolve the 50-year mystery of the origin of short gamma-ray bursts; they might provide strong evidence for (or against) mergers as the main source of half the heaviest elements (the [Formula: see text]-process elements); and they could give an independent measurement of the Hubble constant. The closest events can also address a primary goal of gravitational-wave astrophysics: From the imprint of tides on inspiral waveforms, one can find the radius and tidal distortion of the inspiraling stars and infer the behavior of cold matter above nuclear density. Remarkably, the first observation of the inspiral and coalescence of a double neutron star system was accompanied by a gamma-ray burst and then an array of electromagnetic counterparts, and the combined effort of the gravitational-wave and astronomy communities has led to dramatic advances along all of these anticipated avenues of multimessenger astrophysics.

Possible correlations between gamma-ray burst and its host galaxy offset

We collected the information of 304 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from the literature, and analyzed the correlations among the host galaxy offsets (the distance from the site of the GRB to the center of its host galaxy), T90,i (the duration T90 in rest-frame), TR45,i (the duration TR45 in rest-frame), Eγ,iso (the isotropic equivalent energy), Lγ,iso (=Eγ,iso/T90,i, the isotropic equivalent luminosity) and Lpk (peak luminosity). We found that T90,i, TR45,i, Eγ,iso, Lpk have negative correlation with offset, which is consistent with origin of short GRBs (SGRBs) and long GRBs (LGRBs). On separate analysis, we found similar results for log⁡Eγ,iso−log⁡(offset) and log⁡Lpk−log⁡(offset) relations in case of SGRBs only, while no obvious relation for LGRBs. There is no correlations between offset and Lγ,iso. We also put the special GRB 170817A and GRB 060218A on the plots. The two GRBs both have low luminosity and small offset. In the log⁡(offset)−log⁡T90,i plot, we found GRB 170817A locates in between the two regions of SGRBs and LGRBs and it is the outlier in the offset−Eγ,iso, offset−Lγ,iso and offset−Lpk plots. Together with GRB 060218A being an outlier in all plots, it indicates the speciality of GRBs 170817A and 060218A, and might imply more subgroups of the GRB samples.

R -process nucleosynthesis from matter ejected in binary neutron star mergers

When binary systems of neutron stars merge, a very small fraction of their rest mass is ejected, either dynamically or secularly. This material is neutron-rich and its nucleosynthesis could provide the astrophysical site for the production of heavy elements in the universe, together with a kilonova signal confirming neutron-star mergers as the origin of short gamma-ray bursts. We perform full general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers employing three different nuclear-physics EOSs, considering both equal- and unequal-mass configurations, and adopting a leakage scheme to account for neutrino radiative losses. Using a combination of techniques, we carry out an extensive and systematic study of the hydrodynamical, thermodynamical, and geometrical properties of the matter ejected dynamically, employing the WinNet nuclear-reaction network to recover the relative abundances of heavy elements produced by each configurations. Among the results obtained, three are particularly important. First, we find that both the properties of the dynamical ejecta and the nucleosynthesis yields are robust against variations of the EOS and masses, and match very well the observed chemical abundances. Second, using a conservative but robust criterion for unbound matter, we find that the amount of ejected mass is $\lesssim 10^{-3}\,M_{\odot}$, hence at least one order of magnitude smaller than what normally assumed in modelling kilonova signals. Finally, using a simplified and gray-opacity model we assess the observability of the infrared kilonova emission finding, that for all binaries the luminosity peaks around $\sim1/2$ day in the $H$-band, reaching a maximum magnitude of $-13$, and decreasing rapidly after one day. These rather low luminosities make the prospects for detecting kilonovae less promising than what assumed so far.

A SIZE-DURATION TREND FOR GAMMA-RAY BURST PROGENITORS

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) show a bimodal distribution of durations, separated at a duration of ~2 s. Observations have confirmed the association of long GRBs with the collapse of massive stars. The origin of short GRBs is still being explored. We examine constraints on the emission region size in short and long GRBs detected by Fermi/GBM. We find that the emission region size during the prompt emission, R, and the burst duration, T$_{90}$, are consistent with the relation R ~ c x T$_{90}$, for both long and short GRBs. We find the characteristic size for the prompt emission region to be ~2 x 10$^{10}$ cm, and ~4 x 10$^{11}$ cm for short and long GRBs, respectively.

On the origin of short GRBs with extended emission and long GRBs without associated SN

Abstract The Burst and Transient Source Experiment classifies cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) into short (less than 2 s) and long (over 2 s) events, commonly attributed to mergers of compact objects and, respectively, peculiar core-collapse supernovae. This standard classification has recently been challenged by the Swift discovery of short GRBs showing extended emission (SGRBEE) and nearby long GRBs without an accompanying supernovae (LGRBN). Both show an initial hard pulse, characteristic of SGRBs, followed by a long duration soft tail. We here consider the spectral peak energy (Ep, i)–radiated energy (Eiso) correlation and the redshift distributions to probe the astronomical and physical origin of these different classes of GRBs. We consider Swift events of 15 SGRBs, 7 SGRBEEs, 3 LGRBNs and 230 LGRBs detected by Swift. The spectral-energy properties of the initial pulse of both SGRBEE and LGRBNs are found to coincide with those of SGRBs. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that the redshift distributions of SGRBs, SGRBEE and LGRBNs fall outside the distribution of LGRBs at 4.75σ, 4.67σ and 4.31σ, respectively. A distinct origin of SGRBEEs with respect to LGRBs is also supported by the elliptical host galaxies of the SGRBEE events 050509B and 050724. This combined evidence supports the hypothesis that SGRBEE and LGRBNs originate in mergers as SGRBs. Moreover, long/soft tail of SGRB and LGRBNs satisfy the same Ep, i-Eiso Amati correlation holding for normal LGRBs. This fact points to rapidly rotating black holes as a common long-lived inner engine produced by different astronomical progenitors (mergers and supernovae).

Origins of short gamma-ray bursts deduced from offsets in their host galaxies revisited

The spatial distribution of short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in their host galaxies provides us with an opportunity to investigate their origins. Based on the currently observed distribution of short GRBs relative to their host galaxies, we obtain the fraction of the component that traces the mergers of binary compact objects and the one that traces star formation rate (such as massive stars) in early- and late-type host galaxies. From the analysis of projected offset distribution and only based on population synthesis and massive star models, we find that the fraction of massive stars is 0.37+0.42−0.37 with an error at the 1σ level for a sample with 22 short GRBs in the literature. From these results, it is hard to accept that the origin of short GRBs with observed statistics is well described by current models using only the offset distribution. The uncertainties in observational localizations of short GRBs also strongly affect the resulting fraction.

Implications for the origin of short gamma-ray bursts from their observed positions around their host galaxies

We present the observed offsets of short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) from their putative host galaxies and compare them to the expected distributions of merging compact object binaries, given the observed properties of the hosts. We find that for all but one burst in our sample the offsets are consistent with this model. For the case of bursts with massive elliptical host galaxies, the circular velocities of the hosts' haloes exceed the natal velocities of almost all our compact object binaries. Hence the extents of the predicted offset distributions for elliptical galaxies are determined largely by their spatial extents. In contrast, for spiral hosts the galactic rotation velocities are smaller than typical binary natal velocities and the predicted burst offset distributions are more extended than the galaxies. One SGRB, 060502B, apparently has a large radial offset that is inconsistent with an origin in a merging galactic compact binary. Although it is plausible that the host of GRB 060502B is mis-identified, our results show that the large offset is compatible with a scenario where at least a few per cent of SGRBs are created by the merger of compact binaries that form dynamically in globular clusters.

Gravitational wave: gamma-ray burst connections

After 35 years of experimental research, we are rapidly approaching the point at which gravitational waves (GWs) from astrophysical sources may be directly detected by the long-baseline detectors LIGO (USA), GEO 600 (Germany/UK), VIRGO (Italy/France) and TAMA 300 (Japan), which are now in or coming into operation.A promising source of GWs is the coalescence of compact binary systems, events which are now believed to be the origin of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, a brief review of the state of the art in detector development and exploitation will be given, with particular relevance to a search for signals associated with GRBs, and plans for the future will be discussed.

On the search for the origin of short gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts appear to be the most powerful explosions in the universe. Two types exist – long ones, which last for tens or hundreds of seconds, and short ones that last a few milliseconds to a second. There is a sufficient research evidence to show that long bursts are the death throes of massive stars in distant, young, and vigorously star forming galaxies, while the origin of the short gamma-ray bursts has been shrouded in mystery until now. In December 2005, the first study that accurately pinpoints a short gamma-ray bursts to an old galaxy, implying that a population of old neutron stars are the sources of these explosions was released. The advent of NASA’s Swift Satellite and the rapid follow up by the ground based telescopes will no doubt help to localize the short gamma-ray bursts which are fainter than the long bursts.
