The potential of open innovation platforms: driving sustainable development goals through digital collaboration

ABSTRACT Open innovation is a pivotal driver of organisational growth. This concept involves engaging external partners and leveraging diverse knowledge sources, leading to significant advancements in sustainability. With the rise of digital platforms, the potential for open innovation to foster sustainable development has increased. However, the literature on the intersection of digitalisation, open innovation, and sustainability remains sparse and fragmented. This study aims to bridge this research gap by exploring how digital platforms facilitate open innovation practices and their impact on sustainability, particularly in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By creating a comprehensive database from scientific literature published between 2019 and June 2024, this research compiles a wide range of applications, case studies, and proposed implementations of open innovation platforms. Exploratory analysis maps the landscape of these practices, focusing on their sectoral applications, technologies involved, and business impacts. Text mining techniques are employed to identify patterns and key elements within the dataset. This analysis reveals how open innovation platforms contribute to sustainability, highlighting areas where they are most effective and identifying gaps for future research. The findings offer theoretical and practical insights, providing a detailed understanding of the current state of open innovation in the digital age, and their implications for sustainable development. This study aims to inform practitioners and policymakers about leveraging digital platforms to enhance sustainability efforts.

Relationship Between Gross Motor Function and Nutritional Status of Children with Cerebral Palsy-A cross-sectional study in a Tertiary Care Hospital of Bangladesh

Background: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is one of the most common causes of chronic disability in children. Childhood malnutrition is a major public health issue in low- and middle-income countries. The gross motor function of children with CP can easily be assessed by the tool Gross Motor Function Classification System- Expanded &Revised (GMFCS-E&R). This study aimed to determine the relationship between GMFCS and nutritional status in children with cerebral palsy. Method: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the Department of Pediatric Neurology, IPNA, BSMMU from October 2019 to August 2020. All the patients aged 2-12 years were diagnosed as CP by clinical criteria and classified by GMFCS. Nutritional status (weight for age, height for age, weight for height, BMI) is assessed and classified according to the World Health Organization growth charts. Then linear and multinomial logistic regression methods to determine the associations between GMFCS and nutritional status. The correlation between motor function and nutritional status was assessed. Results: Among the 50 children 68% were male and 32% were female. The mean age of the CP children was 4.90±3.05 years. Most patients (66.0%) came from poor families followed by 24% from the middle class. Functionally majority of patients were in GMFCS level IV (28.0% ) and level V (20.0%). Maximum patients in spastic quadriplegia 42%, spastic hemiplegia 16%. The level of GMFCS was associated with nutritional status, as determined by anthropometry. Moderate and severe underweight significantly related with GMFC level IV and V. Moderate and severe stunted was significantly related with IV and V GMFC level. Moderate wasted was significantly related to GMFC levels III and IV. Mild malnutrition was significantly with GMFC level II and III. Severe malnutrition is significantly related to GMFC level IV and V. Conclusion: This study showed majority of cerebral palsy cases had severe functional gross motor disability and also severe grade of malnutrition. Using AMOS and SPSS for data analysis, the research uses stratified random sampling to guarantee a representative sample. This thorough examination supplies valuable insights for improving digital innovation strategies to promote organizational expansion.

Association of age to nutritional status and muscle mass in children with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundTransfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) is a hereditary blood disorder that often leads to complications affecting growth, nutritional status, and muscle mass in children. This study aims to investigate the associations between age, nutritional status, and muscle mass in children with TDT, providing insights into the progressive impact of age on these parameters.MethodsOne hundred twenty-two children with TDT from March 2023 to March 2024 were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Their nutritional status was assessed using the 2006–2007 World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Charts, and their muscle mass was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Data related to age, gender, weight, height, fat-free mass (FFM), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and soft lean mass (SLM) of children were collected for comparative analysis from the hospital record room. Furthermore, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients and regression analyses were utilized to investigate the associations between age and both nutritional status and muscle mass.ResultsThe results of this study revealed negative correlations between age and wasting (r = −0.26, p < 0.001), stunting (r = −0.28, p < 0.001), FFM (r = −0.3, p < 0.001), SMM (r = −0.23, p < 0.01), and SLM (r = −0.36, p < 0.001). The regression analysis indicated that age was an independent predictor of wasting, stunting, and reduced muscle mass in these children (all p < 0.001).ConclusionOur study observed a trend of worsening stunting, wasting, and muscle loss in children with TDT as they age. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring both nutritional and muscular health in TDT patients. Early detection and comprehensive nutritional management may improve outcomes in this population.

The Impact of HRM Practices on Employee Performance: A Study on Readymade Garments Sector in Bangladesh

This study explores the impact of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices on employee performance in the Readymade Garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh, employing qualitative data collection methods to gain in-depth insights. As the RMG sector plays a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s economy, understanding how HRM practices influence employee performance is essential for organizational growth and effectiveness. Data were collected through semi- structured interviews with HR managers, team leaders, and employees from various RMG firms, as well as focus group discussions. The research focused on key HRM practices including recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation and benefits, and employee relations. These practices were examined to understand their perceived impact on employee performance, such as job satisfaction, productivity and motivation. The qualitative analysis reveals that effective recruitment and selection practices are crucial in aligning employee skills with job requirements, leading to higher performance levels. Comprehensive training programs are valued for enhancing skills and boosting confidence, which positively affects productivity. Transparent and fair performance appraisals are seen as motivating employees and fostering a sense of achievement. Competitive compensation and supportive employee relations contribute to job satisfaction and commitment, driving overall performance. The findings indicate that while HRM practices in the RMG sector are generally effective, there are areas for improvement. This research provides actionable insights for HR professionals and organizational leaders aiming to improve performance outcomes in the RMG sector.

Alternative organization without vertical hierarchies of spatial scale?

Vertical hierarchies of spatial scale—where society in general, and organizations in particular, are differentiated into levels of spatial size—have often been criticized by those encouraging alternatives to capitalist organizing. These vertical scalings are said to promote authoritarianism, a monolithic capitalist economic system, uneven concentrations of social and organizational power and wealth, and ecologically destructive organizational growth. Consequently, so the argument goes, alternative organizing must scale horizontally whereby smaller organizations autonomously associate together into loose networks or federations. The aim of this contribution is to problematize such critiques of vertical hierarchies of scaling for alternative organization. To do so, I combine Management and Organization Studies (MOS) scholarship on scaling alternative organization with two theorizations of the politics of scale in human geography—namely those derived from Neo-Marxist Political Economy and Actor-Network Theories. My argument is that all those looking to understand and encourage the scaling of alternatives to capitalist organizing should engage with and not simply reject vertical scalar hierarchies.

Assessment of the Scholastic Performance and Cognitive Functions in Malnourished Children of Primary and Secondary Class Students

Abstract Background: Malnutrition is the consequence of a combination of deficiencies in protein, carbohydrates, and micronutrients. It includes undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. Malnutrition is associated with both structural and functional pathology of the brain and reflects in poor scholastic performance and less cognitive functions in children. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the scholastic performance and cognitive functions in malnourished children of primary and secondary classes studying in a school. Methodology: The study was conducted on 375 school children of primary and secondary classes. The nutritional status was assessed using the World Health Organization growth charts and classified based on their weight, height, and body mass index with malnutrition considered with values <−2 standard deviation for the age group. The scholastic performance was assessed using the school annual examination records and classified as good or poor scholastic performance with cutoff mark criteria of 50%. The cognitive function was assessed using the child mini–mental state examination (MMSE) test with the mean score for the age group. The scholastic performance and cognitive function were compared between the normal and malnourished groups. The variables were compared with respect to age, gender, standard, and P value obtained to see its significance. The variables were compared between the two groups in each class and test results were obtained. The correlation between each of the variables was also done. Results: Malnourished children were more in the primary classes (30%) than the secondary classes (13.2%). The scholastic performance in the normal group was increased than the malnourished group in both primary and secondary classes. The cognitive function based on the child MMSE score was also more in the normal group than in the malnourished group in both primary and secondary classes. There was a positive correlation between scholastic performance and cognitive function. Conclusion: The study results showed that the scholastic performance and cognitive function were decreased in the malnourished group than the normal group in both primary and secondary classes, implying that malnutrition affects the functionality of the brain and can cause long-term effects like poor cognition.

Head circumference values among Inuit children in Nunavut, Canada: a retrospective cohort study.

Inuit children from Nunavut have been observed to have high rates of macrocephaly, which sometimes leads to burdensome travel for medical evaluation, often with no pathology identified upon assessment. Given reports that World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts may not reflect all populations, we sought to compare head circumference measurements in a cohort of Inuit children with the WHO charts. We extracted head circumference data from a previous retrospective cohort study where, with Inuit partnership, we reviewed medical records of Inuit children (from birth to age 5 yr) born between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2013, and residing in Nunavut. To create a cohort of Inuit children similar to the cohorts used in the development of the WHO growth charts, we excluded children with preterm birth, documented neurologic or genetic disease, and most congenital anomalies. We compared head circumference values with the 2007 WHO charts using centiles estimated with a generalized additive model. We analyzed records of 1960 Inuit children (8866 data points), of whom 993 (50.8%) were female. Most data were from ages 0 to 36 months. At all age points, we found that the study cohort had statistically significantly larger head circumferences than WHO medians, with most z scores for head circumference measurements among Inuit children falling 0.5-1 standard deviations above the WHO reference (p < 0.001). At age 12 months, median head circumferences were 1.3 cm and 1.5 cm larger for male and female Inuit children, respectively. Using WHO growth curves, macrocephaly was significantly overdiagnosed and microcephaly was underdiagnosed (p < 0.001). Our results support the observation that Inuit children from Nunavut have larger head circumferences than other populations, and use of the WHO charts may thus lead to overdiagnosis of macrocephaly and underdiagnosis of microcephaly. Population-specific growth curves for Inuit children should be considered to provide timely and appropriate diagnoses of microcephaly and avoid overinvestigation of macrocephaly.

Testing the Process of Coworker Incivility to Work Withdrawal Behavior: The Moderated Mediation Effects of Employee Resilience in Achieving Organizational Sustainability

Drawing on the implantation of organizational sustainable strategies, enterprises can effectively manage and recycle resources, reduce resource waste, improve market competitiveness, better respond to changes in the market and environment, and create long-term economic benefits. Although a large number of prior studies have emphasized the importance of improving sustainability and proposed various strategies and practical approaches, relatively few studies have explored the inhibitors of sustainability. Against such a research background, this study differs from previous research that has simply focused on ways to increase sustainability; we instead explore negative variables that reduce sustainability. We assess the variable that reduces organizational sustainability, that is, work withdrawal behavior that reduces employees’ enthusiasm for their jobs, hinders employee performance, causes financial losses, and limits organizational growth and sustainability. This directly affects the organization’s long-term growth and sustainability goals and damages the organization’s overall sustainability image. Therefore, understanding the reasons behind this behavior is important. This study examines how coworker incivility leads to work withdrawal behavior and validates relevant research models. Data from 294 Chinese SME employees show that coworker incivility positively affects workplace loneliness and work withdrawal behavior. Workplace loneliness mediates the impact of coworker incivility on work withdrawal behavior, while resilience negatively moderates these relationships. Based on these findings, this study offers recommendations for reducing work withdrawal behavior and improving workplace environments and employee mental health.

Enhancing Employees' Social Responsibility: The Roles of Continuous Improvement, Organization Identification, and Perceived Organization Support

Social responsibility is imperative for its important function in the growth of societies and organizations. However, the research on corporate social responsibility (OSR) has predominantly focused on the actions of organizations. Not much has been discussed regarding the employee's behaviours in promoting the development of social responsibility within organizations. CI is known for its significant role in the organization's various outcomes, Although a conceptualization and some empirical support have been provided for its relationship with the behaviour of employees, However, the effect of CI on employee socially responsible behaviours has not yet been investigated. In this article, following OC and OI theories, we improve the research model which can describe mechanisms underpinning through which CI, OI and POS support actions for employees' social responsibility. Data was collected from members of service professionals in Saudi Arabia and examined using Structural Equation Modeling- Partial Least Squares. The findings indicated that CI actions and activities develop the skills that motivate employees to support social responsibility inside and outside the organization. Moreover, our research paper explained the mechanism under which CI activities reshape employees' socially responsible manners. The current study is among the first to look at how to modify the socially responsible behaviour of employees across organizations, which can be a starting point for transforming those employees into a sustainable society.

Application of machine-learning models to predict the ganciclovir and valganciclovir exposure in children using a limited sampling strategy.

Intravenous ganciclovir and oral valganciclovir display significant variability in ganciclovir pharmacokinetics, particularly in children. Therapeutic drug monitoring currently relies on the area under the concentration-time (AUC). Machine-learning (ML) algorithms represent an interesting alternative to Maximum-a-Posteriori Bayesian-estimators for AUC estimation. The goal of our study was to develop and validate an ML-based limited sampling strategy (LSS) approach to determine ganciclovir AUC0-24 after administration of either intravenous ganciclovir or oral valganciclovir in children. Pharmacokinetic parameters from four published population pharmacokinetic models, in addition to the World Health Organization growth curve for children, were used in the mrgsolve R package to simulate 10,800 pharmacokinetic profiles of children. Different ML algorithms were trained to predict AUC0-24 based on different combinations of two or three samples. Performances were evaluated in a simulated test set and in an external data set of real patients. The best estimation performances in the test set were obtained with the Xgboost algorithm using a 2 and 6 hours post dose LSS for oral valganciclovir (relative mean prediction error [rMPE] = 0.4% and relative root mean square error [rRMSE] = 5.7%) and 0 and 2 hours post dose LSS for intravenous ganciclovir (rMPE = 0.9% and rRMSE = 12.4%). In the external data set, the performance based on these two sample LSS was acceptable: rMPE = 0.2% and rRMSE = 16.5% for valganciclovir and rMPE = -9.7% and rRMSE = 17.2% for intravenous ganciclovir. The Xgboost algorithm developed resulted in a clinically relevant individual estimation using only two blood samples. This will improve the implementation of AUC-targeted ganciclovir therapeutic drug monitoring in children.

Linking Entrepreneurial Orientation, Learning Orientation, Organization Structure and the Growth of Government

The growth of government (GoG) has garnered significant attention among scholars and practitioners across disciplines such as economics, political science, and public management. Despite the optimism surrounding this concept, its future trajectory in the twenty-first century remains uncertain. Extant literature explaining the rationales for organizational growth in the public sector is inconclusive which pertains mostly to the absence of an appropriate methodological approach. Therefore, this research underscores the need for a comprehensive framework to examine the determinants of the growth. Particularly, the burgeoning literature on new public management (NPM) as well as behavioural public administration provides huge potentials to examine the role of the interplay of organizational structure and learning orientation in exacting the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on the growth of government on GoG. The conceptual framework was guided by the hermeneutic approach that focuses on interpreting texts or phenomena by understanding the contextual elements to uncover deeper meaning and insights. It does so by drawing upon different streams of literature including entrepreneurial orientation, learning orientation, organizational structure, and the growth of government. In order to operationalize the framework, a succinct set of propositions is proposed. The proposed conceptual framework along with suggested research propositions will potentially guide future research to further extend the growth of government literature.

Barriers and opportunities of the circular economy in small and medium enterprises: a systematic review of the literature

This study aimed to present a portrait of studies on Circular Economy (CE) in Small and Medium-sized Companies (SMEs), from 2011 to 2021, referring to articles published in Scopus database journals. To this end, a systematic literature review (RSL) was developed, which collected a sample of 141 articles, which, after being evaluated, resulted in a total of 25 studies to be investigated, falling within the scope of this proposal. The main results show that the connections between the subjects are increasing, confirming that the implementation of CE aimed at SMEs has become a relevant issue that requires scientific deepening. There is a greater incidence of economic and political barriers, emphasizing the lack of financial resources combined with the lack of incentives for industries. The research contributes by exploring the concept of CE, taking into account current discussions on the subject. It is important that the barriers that inhibit the application of CE are overcome, that a model is properly designed and joint and strategic actions are implemented. The suggestion for future research involves the creation of a theoretical framework that articulates the identified elements and serves as a basis for SMEs, translating the transition as a path of sustainable organizational growth.

Nurturing teachers’ creativity: Exploring leadership roles and constraints

Creativity research suggests the profound effect of leadership on the social environment that influences creativity within organisations. Despite numerous studies that claimed a role for leadership in nurturing creativity, the effects of instructional and innovative leadership on creativity development leading to organisational growth have remained largely overlooked. Therefore, this study examines the influence of leadership on teachers’ creativity. Data were collected from 369 teachers serving in secondary schools in Malaysia. In addition, three principals were also interviewed to understand how school leadership strategies can enhance teachers’ creativity within the school context. In addition, their challenges in supporting teachers’ creativity and innovation were explored. Results indicate that they mostly preferred instructional leadership rather than innovative leadership which aimed to influence their creativity. Findings from the structural model have confirmed that instructional leadership was the most preferred leadership practice compared to innovative leadership when enhancing teacher creativity. In exploring support for creativity, principals mainly used incentive and informal support and encouragement with teachers. In understanding principals’ constraints, senior teachers who are reluctant to change and principals’ heavy workloads and shortage of time are mentioned as challenges that principals need to face while supporting teachers’ creativity in schools. This study recommends that school leaders must possess sufficient knowledge and skill to support teachers’ creativity which requires that school leaders are open to and supportive of creative activities. The results also indicate that school leaders need to understand teachers’ requirements as providers of creative teaching and learning.

Transforming Performance: The Significance of Transformational Leadership

In the contemporary organizational landscape, effective leadership is essential for fostering employee enthusiasm, engagement, and performance. This research aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between transformational leadership and job performance from the employees' perspective. Transformational leadership, characterized by its ability to inspire and empower employees towards shared goals, contrasts with transactional styles by emphasizing idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected through questionnaires distributed to employees across various departments in a company located in Bandar Baru Bangi. The survey focused on the four key dimensions of transformational leadership and their impact on employee performance. The results were analyzed using Pearson correlation, indicate significant positive correlations between all dimensions of transformational leadership and employee performance. The findings emphasize the importance of transformational leadership in enhancing employee performance. Leaders who demonstrate charismatic behavior, inspire with a compelling vision, provide personalized support, and stimulate creativity can significantly improve employee performance. This study provides valuable insights for human resource practitioners seeking to leverage transformational leadership to boost employee performance and achieve organizational success. By adopting transformational practices, leaders can foster a motivated, engaged, and high-performing workforce, thereby driving organizational growth and sustainability.

Female Agency in Rural Public Participation: Actions and Strategies for Empowering Social Organizations in Dilemmas

Current grassroots social governance in China advocates the participation of multiple entities, represented by social organizations. However, social organizations often face mismatches between supply and demand, low levels of specialization, and a lack of resources and talent when providing services. Given previous research exploring the institutional environment of social organizations, this paper focuses on the agency of actors within these organizations and their interactive relationship with the organization. It finds that rural women can become enablers of the growth of social organizations in distress and intermediary roles for promoting local social operations, which contests the stereotype about womens vulnerability. This article compares, inducts and analyzes six empirical cases based on the "Role-Agency" framework, and categorizes rural womens roles and agencies in empowering social organizations in distress into four groups. The analysis of these action strategies will provide social organizations with more paths to improve service models and promote social advocacy.
