Double-edged sword effects of green HRM on employee organizational citizenship behavior for the environment: interactive effects and mediation mechanisms

PurposeEmployee green behavior contributes to the achievement of hospitality organizations’ sustainability goals. However, there is a need to examine how green human resource management (GHRM) fosters employees’ green behavior. Anchored on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, we anticipate that GHRM may have double-edged effects on employees’ organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) via two opposing mechanisms (e.g. environmental passion and emotional exhaustion). Moreover, we expect that the relationship of GHRM on environmental passion and emotional exhaustion depends on environmentally specific empowering leadership (ESEL).Design/methodology/approachThe data were garnered from 356 hospitality employees in Pakistan and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).FindingsThe findings revealed a significant and positive link between GHRM and employee OCBE and environmental passion and a significant and negative relationship between GHRM and emotional exhaustion. Similarly, the link between environmental passion and employee OCBE was significant and positive and between emotional exhaustion and employee OCBE was significant and negative. Our results indicate that the impact of GHRM on OCBE among hospitality employees was mediated by environmental passion and emotional exhaustion. Further, ESEL strengthened the association of GHRM with environmental passion while mitigating the effect of GHRM on emotional exhaustion.Originality/valueAnchored on the COR theory, our study provides novel empirical evidence by investigating the mechanisms and boundary conditions between GHRM and employee OCBE nexus in the hospitality realm.

Unlocking sustainability: the dynamic nexus of organizational support, identification, and green HRM practices in cultivating pro-environmental excellence

Purpose There is a growing need to promote and practice sustainable HRM to foster greener organizations with trained employees who have an attitude and behavior to preserve depleting resources. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of sustainable green human resource management (Green HRM) practices along with organizational identification (OI) as a mediating factor and perceived organizational support (POS) as a moderating factor. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative methodology was used, and the data were collected from 311 employees working in telecommunication organizations located in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Results of the study are based on the structural equation modeling technique using Smart-PLS. Findings Findings revealed that OI proved to be a significant positive mediator between Green HRM and organizational citizenship behaviors for the environment. POS also proved to be a significant moderator on the relationship between Green HRM and OI. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to the two cities of Pakistan; future studies can focus on more cities so that the results can be more generalized. Practical implications This study will especially be useful for HR practitioners to develop mechanisms to initiate and encourage sustainable HR practices. Social implications Organizations’ positive position is established through the inculcation of green activities among their employees. Thus, a sense of responsibility and attachment among employees toward green behavior makes them good citizens. It also works well for their organization as well as for the environment. Moreover, it preserves environmental resources and helps ensure sustainability. Originality/value The research paper was aimed at exploring the importance of sustainable Green HRM practices in a developing country like Pakistan.

The cross-level influence of ethical leadership on employee’s OCBE: a two-wave study based on the social identity approach

The importance of organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) has received increasing attention in recent years because organizations face increasing pressure from environmental deterioration. The purpose of this study is to use social identity theory to construct a cross-level theoretical model of ethical leadership on OCBE, and to explore the cross-level influential mechanisms of ethical leadership on OCBE. Data collection was conducted via a two-wave distribution of leader-employee paired questionnaires in 20 manufacturing companies in China. In the first wave, data about OCBE and team environmental atmosphere were collected from leaders. Subsequently, 2 months later, we conducted the second wave of data collection when data about ethical leadership and leader identity were obtained from their employees. The results showed that at the individual level, ethical leadership has a significant positive impact on employees’ OCBE, and such relationship is partially mediated by employees’ leader identity and positively moderated by team environmental atmosphere across levels. At the team level, ethical leadership has a significant positive impact on employees’ OCBE, and such relationship is completely mediated by team environmental atmosphere. This study investigates the cross-level influential mechanism of ethical leadership on OCBE in China and provides theoretical guidance for enterprises to promote OCBE effectively.

Green human resource management practices as a strategic choice for enhancing employees' environmental outcomes: an affective events theory perspective

PurposeDrawing on affective events theory (AET), this study aims to examine how green human resource management (GHRM) practices influence employees' environmental commitment (EEC) and organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) through the mediating role of harmonious environmental passion (HEP).Design/methodology/approachTime-lagged and multisource data were collected from employee–coworker dyads (n = 231) working in manufacturing companies. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling (SEM) technique.FindingsResults revealed that GHRM practices predicted both EEC and OCBE significantly. Further, HEP partially mediated the relationship of GHRM practices with EEC and OCBE.Originality/valueThis study provides new insights towards the unattended affective processes that underlie the link between GHRM practices and green employee outcomes through a coherent theoretical lens of AET. It spotlights that implementing GHRM practices as a strategic choice helps evoke HEP among employees, which is an essential determinant of employees' eco-friendly attitude and behavior.

Unlocking the Power of Green HRM: Exploring its Impact on Organizational Citizenship Behavior - An Empirical Investigation

This paper addresses a significant research gap by focusing on the impact of green Human Resource Management (HRM) practices on employees' organizational citizenship behavior in the context of the health industry, particularly within an emerging economy like Pakistan. Despite the increasing recognition of the importance of environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility, there has been a notable dearth of research in this specific domain, especially in regions like Pakistan, which are often overlooked in the existing literature. To bridge this gap, our study employs the well-established Ability, Motivation, and Opportunity (AMO) framework as the theoretical foundation. We aim to investigate both the direct and interactive effects of green HRM practices, including reward systems, training initiatives, employee involvement, and performance management, on employees' organizational citizenship behavior for the environment. To substantiate our hypotheses and gain insights into their managerial implications, we conducted an empirical study employing a comprehensive questionnaire survey methodology. Through rigorous analysis, we utilized a regression model as an econometric technique to validate our research framework. The findings of our study are illuminating. We provide robust evidence of the direct and interactive impacts of these four key GHRM practices on employees' organizational citizenship behavior with a particular focus on their environmental engagement. Notably, our results highlight that green training emerges as a pivotal instrument in fostering employees' voluntary environmental actions. The practical implications of our research are noteworthy. By showcasing the effectiveness of GHRM practices in shaping employees' voluntary behavior, our study offers valuable insights for the development of future policies and practices in organizations. Moreover, our research underscores the broader societal relevance of GHRM practices in contributing to sustainable development, emphasizing their role in influencing employees' organizational citizenship behavior for the environment.

Driving Sustainable Change: The Power of Supportive Leadership and Organizational Citizenship Behavior in Fostering Environmental Responsibility

Change and environmental trends are enormously influencing the globe. Businesses, societies, and people are all attempting to do their part to safeguard the environment. This study examines the impact of supportive leadership on organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) and the mediating effect of psychological empowerment and affective commitment. The survey method was utilized. Data were gathered from 362 employees of the banking and pharmaceutical sectors for the present research. This research employed AMOS-SEM to analyze data and test the formulated hypotheses. The empirical results established that supportive leadership significantly influences workers’ OCBE. The results further corroborate that psychological empowerment and affective commitment mediate between supportive leadership and organizational citizenship behavior for the environment. These findings have vital implications for managers and enterprises that seek to increase their sustainability and organizational citizenship behavior for the environment. This research highlights the significant role of supportive leadership in stimulating psychological empowerment and affective commitment, which in turn affect organizational citizenship behavior for the environment. The present research broadens our understanding of leadership style and its influence on OCBE. The theoretical and managerial implications of organizational environmental sustainability and future research prospects are highlighted.

The influence of green shared vision, education and training, and green recruitment, on organizational citizenship behavior for environment in elementary schools in Indonesia.

Managing human resources in schools as a basis for instilling knowledge becomes a strategic phenomenon. The importance of these human resources needs to start with a sustainable development plan, with green regulations and a green environment. Analysis of the influence of Green Shared Vision, Education and Training and Green Recruitment on Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment is the main objective of this research. To achieve the research objectives, the object of this study were all elementary school employees, Yogyakarta Province - Indonesia, with a sample calculation using the slovin method of 163 workers in the school. Retrieval of data using purposive random sampling method and cluster sampling technique. With 23 indicators of 4 variables measured by simantec scale. The analysis tools used are validity and reliability, using Variance Based Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis, with the SmartPLS version 4 software tool. The research results show that Green Shared Vision has no effect on Organizational Citizenship Behavior for Environment, Education and Training, Green Recruitment has a positive and significant effect on Organizational Citizenship Behavior for Environment.

Integrating OCBE Literature and Norm Activation Theory: A Moderated Mediation on Proenvironmental Behavior of Employees

Research lacks a solid understanding of the relational patterns between intrapersonal and organizational determinants to promote proenvironmental behavior. In this study, I investigated the effects of employees’ intrapersonal and perceived organizational determinants on voluntary proenvironmental behavior of employees (VPBE) from an integrative moral perspective. While primarily building on insights from norm activation theory and research on organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE), I developed a framework and empirically analyzed how interactions between ascriptions of environmental responsibility, perceptions of proenvironmental work climates, and affective organizational commitment influence VPBE. The findings show that even employees (in this study: student workforce) with little sense of responsibility towards nature can be subtly encouraged to practice VPBE. I discuss the findings against the backdrop of integrated and introjected norms and provide managerial advice. The study contributes to a theoretical broadening of the norm activation theory in workplace contexts and advances our knowledge of conditional effects and normative mechanisms underlying VPBE.

The Role of Green Marketing and its Impact on Human Resource Management in Hotel Industry in the Context of Delhi NCR

The public's growing concern about environmental issues has sparked study into green policies, particularly in human resource management strategy. Despite the fact that the theme of green human resource management (GHRM), defined as an environmental management-oriented human resource management strategy, has recently gained popularity, previous research has largely ignored the indirect effects of employee environmental commitment and organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) on the links between GHRM practices and corporate environmental performance; and the interactive influences of among and GHRM practices on corporate environmental performance. This work aims to bridge such research gaps by examining a new conceptual framework that explores the direct, indirect, and interactive roles of GHRM practices to organizations’ environmental performance by extending Ability-Motivation Opportunity and social exchange theories.

Organizational citizenship behavior for the environment decoded: sustainable leaders, green organizational climate and person-organization fit

PurposeThis study examines how sustainable leadership influences organizational citizenship behavior toward the environment, directly and through a green organizational climate. This study also investigates the moderating effect of person-organization fit on the relationship between green organizational climate and employees' organizational citizenship behavior for the environment.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 241 employees of manufacturing firms in China with one month's lag. Statistical analyses were conducted with the use of PLS-SEM.FindingsThis study confirmed that sustainable leadership significantly influenced organizational citizenship behavior for the environment, both directly and indirectly through a green organizational climate. It also revealed that the relationship between green organizational climate and employees' organizational citizenship behavior for the environment was contingent on the person-organization fit.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to analyze how sustainable leadership reinforces employees' organizational citizenship behavior for the environment by providing insight into the mediating role of green organizational climate and person-organization fit as a moderator. Moreover, through a combination of three theoretical perspectives (social learning theory, social exchange theory and the theory of person-organization fit), this study advances the academic knowledge on how organizational citizenship behavior for the environment develops, thus providing a more complex explanation of the relationship between the examined variables.

University Social Responsibility in China: The Mediating Role of Green Psychological Capital

Generation Z represents the young people of today. They are considered as "digitally literate" and were born between mid-to-late 1990s to early 2000s. Generation Z pays more attention to popular environmental issues such as global warming, high energy consumption, overgrazing, and university social responsibility (USR), which are present around the world. We formed a double moderated mediation exam from 910 college students in southeast China, used a new notion "green psychological capital", and proposed it as a vital mediator. In addition, we found that green organizational ambidexterity and environmental attitude are both boundary conditions in the green shared vision organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) link. These findings have unlocked a deeper insight into Generation Z's green conception and offered a more comprehensive investigation on USR research. Furthermore, the amazing findings can provide a worldwide blueprint for USR studies in the long term.

Looking up and fitting in: Team leaders' and members' behaviors and attitudes toward the environment in an MNC.

As an emerging topic in human resource management (HRM) research, organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) and workgroup green advocacy (WGGA) have been studied as a proxy of the environmental performance of organizations as well as a potential way for companies to assess the impact of their environmental strategies and initiatives. Viewing OCBE and WGGA as green-focused knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics and building on leader-member exchange theory, we examined the effects of leaders' OCBE and WGGA, person-supervisor fit (PSF), and person-group fit (PGF) as well as their potential interactions on members' OCBE and WGGA. To minimize the potential impact of different company strategies, the study was conducted in one MNC using a sample of 269 members from 64 teams. The results revealed that PSF and especially PGF were associated with members' OCBE and WGGA, but leaders' OCBE was a stronger predictor of members' OCBE and WGGA than leaders' WGGA. Contrary to our prediction, no moderating effect of PSF or PGF was found for the associations between leaders' and members' WGGA and OCBE. Together, these findings shed light on the differential trickle-down effects of leaders' perceptions and behaviors in the context of environmental management. As for the implications for HRM practitioners, our findings suggest companies may focus on leaders' OCBE and WGGA as well as on PSF and PGF independently as the means to shaping team members' OCBE and WGGA to support environmental strategies.

Green transformational leadership and employee organizational citizenship behavior for the environment in the manufacturing industry: A social information processing perspective.

The employee organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) contributes to the improvement of the organization's environment, its study is increasing in number. However, the psychological mechanism of promoting employee OCBE is still a missing link. Drawing on the theory of social information processing, this study seeks to establish the impact of green transformational leadership on employee OCBE and the mediating role of green organizational climate in this nexus. In addition, we have integrated environmental concerns to better explain the impact of this differentiation. The results show that: green transformational leadership has a significant positive impact on employee OCBE, and green organizational climate has a mediating effect on the impact of green transformational leadership on employee OCBE. Furthermore, environmental concern not only has a positive moderating effect on the influence of green transformational leadership on green organizational climate, but also positively moderates the impact of the influence of green transformational leadership on employee OCBE. This paper reveals the internal psychological mechanism of improving employee OCBE and provides ideas for promoting the sustainable development of enterprises.

Achieving employee environmental performance through perceived organizational support towards the environment: a mediated-moderation analysis

Purpose – This study aims to examine the effect of perceived organizational support for the environment (POSE) on environmental performance, by considering the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) and the moderating role of individual green values. Design/methodology/approach – This study used a quantitative approach with a sample of 215 respondents from manufacturing company employees and used purposive sampling technique. The data obtained were analyzed using conditional process analysis and SPSS-Process. Findings – The results of this study indicated that POSE had a positive effect on environmental performance and proved that this influence can be found through the mediating role of OBCE. Then, the individual green value moderated the effect of POSE on OCBE, and the indirect effect of POSE on environmental performance through OCBE. Research limitations/implications – The data in this study were only taken from one city in Indonesia in a cross-sectional manner; thus, it required research with longitudinal data to explore causality between variables. Practical implications – The findings of this study can be a consideration for managers in manufacturing companies to understand the importance of improving environmental performance in companies and what factors influence it. Originality/value – Research that uses POSE and OCBE as factors that determine environmental performance in manufacturing companies, especially in Indonesia, is still limited. In addition, this study also considers the moderating role of individual green values and contributes to provide an understanding of the importance of environmental aspects for companies.

Environmental Transformational Leadership and Green Innovation in the Hotel Industry: Two Moderated Mediation Analyses.

This research aims to investigate the relationships between transformational environmental leadership (ETL), organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE), and green innovation (GI). At the same time, green perceived organizational support (GPOS) and promotion focus (PF) roles were examined as moderators. Integrating transformational leadership, ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO), social exchange, expectancy, and regulatory focus theories, a quantitative research-based methodology was adopted with structural equation modelling (SEM), and smart partial least squares (PLS) program to analyze the obtained data from 388 guest-contact employees. The results show that ETL positively affects OCBE; in return, OCBE mediated the association between ETL and GI. The results also approved the positive moderation effects of the GPOS and PF variables on the association between ETL and OCBE. In the context of the hotel industry, we discuss the implications that these results have for both research and practice.

Goal self-concordance mediates the relation of core self-evaluations with organizational citizenship behavior but not with environmental organizational citizenship behavior

This paper tested antecedents of organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCB-E) and goal self-concordance as a mediator between those antecedents and OCB-E or related outcomes. We proposed that core self-evaluations, a well-studied antecedent of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), are also related to a newer form of OCB – namely, OCB-E. Similarly, we proposed that environmental identity, a well-studied antecedent of pro-environmental behaviors (PEBS), are also related to a specific form of PEBS – again, OCB-E. The specific relations of these antecedents to OCB-E, to the best of our knowledge, had never been tested. Drawing on the goal-self concordance model, we tested goal self-concordance as a mediating mechanism in each of these relationships. Results drawn from a sample of 297 employees from diverse organizations support goal self-concordance as a relevant mediator between core self-evaluations and OCB, but not for the remaining relationships. Still, environmental identity, as well as core self-evaluations, are positively and significantly related to OCB-E. We discuss implications for the conceptualization of OCB-E and ways to further study this concept.

A Literature Review of Green Human Resource Management for Gaining a Competitive Advantage

Green human resource management (GHRM) plays an important role in organizations’ sustainable development strategies. However, there is still a research gap on the integration of available GHRM-related knowledge to gain a competitive advantage. Objectives: Thus, the purpose of this paper is to conduct a literature review on GHRM aimed at proposing detailed research on those gaps in order to gain competitive advantages for future studies. Methodology: First, this work applies the keyword GHRM and "competitive advantage" for articles above the year 2017 and selects articles indexed in Scopus only. We have conducted a preselect process to figure out the appropriate articles related to GHRM and competitive advantage. We have also selected and reviewed 18 articles discussing the relationship between GHRM and competitive advantage.Finding: Last, the study addresses research gaps and proposes a research framework for further studies.Conclusion: Analysis of the relevant literature is presented in descriptive analysis and a research framework that focuses on GHRM for a future research agenda. This review is important for researchers in GHRM to identify research gaps for competitive advantage. It is suggested that mediating variables, such as organizational citizenship behavior for the environment and environmental performance, have to be included in GHRM's future research to gain a competitive advantage.

How Institutional Pressure Affects Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment: The Moderated Mediation Effect of Green Management Practice

The processes of sustainable development, environmental management, and green performance are inseparable from people’s active participation, and organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) has a significant function in promoting that process. We construct a moderated mediating effect model of green management practice by introducing institutional pressure and green emotion into the formation mechanism of OCBE based on neo-institutionalism theory and the theory of planned behavior. Taking matched employees of cross-regional organizations as a sample, we conducted a longitudinal tracking questionnaire survey. The results show a positive correlation between institutional pressure and OCBE, mediated by green emotion. Additionally, the paper discovered that green management practice moderated the relationships between institutional pressure and OCBE, green emotion and OCBE, and institutional pressure and green emotion. Furthermore, green management practice also moderates the strength of the mediating effect of green emotion between institutional pressure and OCBE. The findings provide some guidance for promoting organizational sustainable development and achieving organizational green transformation.
