Modelling and optimization of combined supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle and organic Rankine cycle for electricity and hydrogen production

Hydrogen as a clean fuel, is key energy carrier for sustainable development, and its production via water electrolysis is most desirable for its carbon free nature. Nuclear power provides good opportunity to satisfy the huge energy demand associated with the process, in addition to electrical power generation. Modelling an efficient and cost effective nuclear based power and Hydrogen cogeneration system and optimizing it to enhance its performance is the core academic problem addressed in the present study. It proposes a power plant cycle aided by a nuclear reactor, providing 300 MW thermal power input. Supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle is used as the main cycle, instead of traditional Helium Brayton cycle or steam Rankine cycle. To increase the cycle efficiency, by reducing the compression work and by reducing the cold source loss, main compression intercooling and waste heat recovery by an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is introduced together with recompression Brayton cycle arrangement. The power coming from recovered waste heat goes to a Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer (PEME), which facilitates the production of Hydrogen by splitting water via electrolysis. Additional attention is given to ORC fluid selection by employing and comparing the performance of widely acknowledged R245fa together with its more eco friendly replacements, R1233Zd(E) and R1234Ze(Z). The evaluation of the system performance is conducted through the lenses of Energy, Exergy, and Economics. Essential parameters are scrutinized to gauge their impact on two pivotal objectives. Overall Exergy Efficiency(ηex) takes care of the thermodynamic performance and the economic aspect is scrutinized by Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOEn). Notably, by employing R245fa as the ORC working fluid, the system attains peak Energy efficiency of 42.13% and Exergy efficiency of 58.32%, and a minimum LCOEn of 0.063 USD/kWh. Of all the components associated with the system nuclear reactor tops the chart for maximum exergy destroyed(40.8% of total) as well as maximum investment cost(65.7% of total). Pump contributes least to exergy destruction(0.03% of the total) and heat exchangers hold least share(1.1% of total) for investment cost. Furthermore, a multiobjective optimization exercise is executed to fine-tune the system’s operational parameters. This optimization results in a 3.12% increase in Overall Exergy Efficiency and a 9.79% decrease in LCOEn compared to the base operating condition with R245fa used as the ORC fluid. The ηex & LCOEn in best possible operating condition are 58.25% & 0.0645 USD/kWh using R245fa as ORC fluid, 58.23% & 0.0645 USD/kWh using R1233Zd(E) as ORC fluid and 58.22% & 0.0644 USD/kWh using R1234Ze(Z) as ORC fluid. If same amount of electrical Power is supplied to PEME for both with and without ORC configuration, having an ORC is advantageous both in terms of superior Exergy Efficiency and lower LCOEn. The proposed configuration is also economically more lucrative with higher Net Present Value(NPV) and Benefit to Cost Ratio(BCR). For example, when PEME power input for both the cases is 10 MW, proposed system has NPV = 201.79 Million USD & BCR = 1.70 compared to NPV = 164.03 Million USD & BCR = 1.58 for without ORC configuration. Even if in without ORC configuration, no electrical power is supplied to the electrolyzer, adding an ORC to produce Hydrogen will still achieve maximum 1.57% Exergy Efficiency increment, compared to only electrical power production by sCO2 Brayton cycle. It is seen that in base condition, the NPV is still superior for the proposed configuration (203.03 to 189.32 Million USD), and the BCR dips only slightly from 1.72 to 1.71.

General integration method for system configuration of organic Rankine cycle based on stage-wise concept

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) integrated systems with heat sources consist of heat exchange processes and thermodynamic power conversion processes. Fully exploring feasible system configuration while considering fluid selection is crucial for enhancing ORC power generation and balancing economic costs. This study innovatively proposes a theoretical framework that decomposes the Rankine cycle into basic thermodynamic processes. The design of system configuration is regarded as the adjustment of the series-parallel relationships of these basic processes, aiming to achieve simultaneous optimization of the cycle structure and the HEN structure, thereby greatly expanded the search space for feasible ORC system configurations. The optimization problem is solved using a bi-level strategy, The outer layer determines the number of thermal power conversion components, operating parameters, and working fluid selection, then provides the associated stream information to the inner layer for optimizing the heat exchange scheme. Applying this method to two different case studies from the literature validated its effectiveness in optimizing scenarios with single and complex heat sources. The Pareto frontier obtained under the conditions of Case I indicates that the investment cost can be reduced by $33.04 k/yr while maintaining the same net power output. In exchange for an increase of $1.51 k/yr in investment cost, the maximum net power output can be improved by 124.74 kW. Under the conditions of Case II, the maximum net output power can increase by 9.71 %–52.5 %, and the Pareto frontier featuring outputs exceeding 50 kW is provided. By analyzing the relative positions of literature schemes and Pareto front within the solution space, the impact of system configuration improvements on the objective functions is explained. These results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for designing optimal ORC energy recovery systems for heat sources. This contribution advances optimization methods for similar closed cycle configurations, which is significant for advancing the utilization of waste heat and addressing sustainability challenges.

Experimental analysis of a pilot plant in Organic Rankine Cycle configuration with regenerator and thermal energy storage (TES-RORC)

Applying thermal energy storage in a Regenerative Organic Rankine Cycle system is a possible combination of energy storage for renewable and waste energy sources. This research presents an experimental analysis of a regenerative organic Rankine cycle pilot plant, incorporating a thermal energy storage chamber based on a phase change materials to obtain thermal inertia in the system. The primary heat source is the residual heat of combustion gases at a temperature of approximately 320 °C coming from a generating set that operates within a thermal power generation plant. The prototype uses a twin-screw expander modified to work as a turbine. Novec 649 was used as the working fluid which is an organic compound. The experimental evaluation of the regenerative organic Rankine cycle with thermal energy storage has been carried out through energy and exergetic efficiency analysis to verify the operation of the pilot plant. Values of 13.2 % were obtained for the exergetic efficiency and 2.67 % for the global efficiency of the cycle, with a maximum expander work of 11.8 kW. It was demonstrated that the thermal energy storage system provides energy in response to the plant's operating inertia for 17.5 min, sufficient time for the gradual shutdown of the plant equipment, maintaining the working power of the regenerative organic Rankine cycle.

A novel system based on a series of ORCs to recover cryogenic energy from the LNG regasification process for power and freshwater production

Seawater desalination emerges as a feasible solution to solve the issues related to the freshwater scarcity generated by climate change. In the meantime, the energy transition promotes using Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) as a cleaner fuel. Usually, it is stored near marine areas at 113 K, therefore the recovery of part of the exergetic cold potential for freshwater production appears very appealing. In light of this, this study evaluates the energy and exergy performances of an innovative seawater desalination plant supplied by the cryogenic power released in the LNG regasification process. Specifically, three Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) arranged in series, operating between the seawater (hot source) and LNG (cold source) thermal levels, are investigated. Seawater releases heat to promote the evaporation of proper low-boiling fluids, cooling down to −5.62 °C and forming a two-phase mixture consisting of 50 wt% of pure ice and brine, so that the same liquid phase is employed for ice transportation in post-treatment devices. Simultaneously, the LNG is preheated by the low-boiling fluids’ condensation heat, allowing for the limitation of the thermal energy required for the phase change. Power generation is obtained by turboexpanders located between vaporizers and condensers. Eighteen different ORC configurations using diverse working fluids were analysed assuming steady-state conditions and ideal transformations. Considering a regasification terminal with a capacity of 8 billion Sm³ per year, the maximum power production amounts to 11.24 MW, recovering 13.33% of thermal exergy and producing 137.5 kg/s of freshwater. When desalination is privileged, 149.9 kg/s of freshwater can be produced, generating a power output of 7.02 MW with an exergetic recovery efficiency of 8.32%.

Thermodynamic Optimization of Trigeneration Power System

Worldwide, the growing demand for energy has been largely met through power cycles utilizing fossil fuels. Combined cycles, which integrate a gas turbine with a steam cycle, prove to be the best alternative due to their power generation capacity and high efficiencies. This efficiency is primarily attributed to the ability to harness exhaust gases to generate steam in the heat recovery boiler, allowing additional power generation through the steam turbine. Currently, there is a quest for the integration of low-temperature power cycles to maximize the utilization of residual thermal energy flows for power generation. Therefore, this work conducts an exergetic optimization of a power trigeneration system aimed at maximizing exergetic efficiency. This system includes a gas turbine and a steam cycle coupled with three different configurations of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC): a simple ORC, a supercritical ORC, and an ultracritical ORC. The ORC configurations are analyzed using eight organic working fluids, namely R1234yf, R290, R134a, R1234ze, R152a, R600a, R245fa, and R123. The results show that the maximum exergetic efficiency is achieved by using R152a in the ultracritical ORC configuration coupled with the combined cycle, achieving an exergetic efficiency of 55.79%. Furthermore, the maximum power generated is attained by the steam cycle with 85,600.63 kW and 3101.21 kW for the ultracritical ORC.

Split flow principle implementation for advanced subcritical double stage organic rankine cycle configuration for geothermal power production

The main goal of research is to find the most suitable combination of working fluids, for double stage Organic Rankine Cycle configurations which ensure maximum net power output for low to medium enthalpy geothermal sources with temperatures from 120 °C to 180 °C. All obtained results are compared with the values obtained in simple Organic Rankine Cycle configuration. In general, it can be concluded that the highest net power output is produced by the double stage Organic Rankine Cycle configuration in the geothermal temperature interval from 120 °C to 132 °C. In the geothermal fluid inlet temperature interval from 143 °C to 180 °C double stage Organic Rankine Cycle configuration achieves the highest net power output values at 150 °C, 160 °C, 170 °C and 180 °C and that 40,93 (kW) with a combination of working fluids R236fa/R1234yf (high temperature stage/low temperature stage), 49,85 (kW) with R236ea/R227ea, 59,03 (kW) with R236ea/R227ea and 69,40 (kW) with n-Butane/R1234ze(E). In the temperature interval from 132 °C to 142 °C all considered configurations achieve similar values of net power output.

Thermal analysis and dynamic attributes of a sustainable CSP-fossil hybrid power plant utilizing organic Rankine cycles for enhanced plant performance

The increasing global demand for energy, driven by population growth, highlights the need for sustainable solutions to ensure a sustainable future. This article outlines the design and optimization process of a 1 MW CSP-Fossil hybrid power plant that examines the utilization of toluene and cyclohexane as working fluids within three distinct Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) configurations (simple, recuperated, and with Open Feed Organic Heater). This study aims to propose a sustainable and effective solution for satisfying energy needs while addressing the intermittent nature of solar resources by enhancing system architecture and incorporating fossil fuel technologies. The solar field design has been based on a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system, which generated 44% of the total energy output from renewable solar sources. The analysis takes into consideration a selection of criteria, notably thermal efficiency, overall efficiency, power generation capacity, and cost-effectiveness. The selection of relevant performance indicators, evaluation of alternative ORC configurations and working fluids, and optimization of the solar multiple and thermal storage capacity are included among the criteria for conducting the parametric investigation. Based on the investigation, it has been determined that the ORC configuration, which includes a recuperator and utilizes cyclohexane as the working fluid, demonstrates the most favorable design. This configuration offers enhanced efficiency and improved performance. Additionally, it is determined that a solar multiple value of 1.7 and the integration of a 12-hour thermal energy storage system are optimal. This led to a 4-5 hour increase in the availability of daily power generation, thereby improving the reliability and flexibility of the CSP plant. The incorporation of fossil fuels into the hybrid CSP-Fossil plant results in a notable enhancement of the Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF). This improvement guarantees uninterrupted energy generation even when solar resources are limited. The implications of the findings are significant for the future development of CSP systems. These findings provide valuable insights into enhancing energy efficiency and tackling sustainability challenges.

Energetic/exergetic study of Kalina and refrigeration bottoming cycles on different solar‐driven organic Rankine cycles

AbstractCombination of different power cycle scenarios is of prime importance in achieving maximum energy utilization from solar‐driven multigeneration systems. To fulfill such objective, the present article proposes a novel energy distribution system, leveraging a combination of direct‐fed organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and a bottom‐cycled arrangement of Kalina cycle system (KCS) and double‐effect absorption refrigeration cycle (DEARC) within a parabolic trough solar collector powered trigeneration system. The study explores three different ORC configurations: simple ORC; ORC equipped with internal heat exchanger (ORC‐IHE) and regenerative ORC (RORC). It is shown that although higher efficiencies are achievable from a larger portion of PTSC energy absorbed by the ORC, the ORC energy absorption is limited by ORC evaporator temperature differences, and there is unused energy that can be recovered by the KCS, based on the proposed energy system. The results indicate that the addition of bottoming KCS leads to a considerable increase in the exergy efficiency of ORC, ORC‐IHE and RORC‐based systems by 11.7%, 30.7% and 32.6%, respectively. The impact of different ORC configurations, key ORC parameters and various organic working fluids on the energetic/exergetic efficiencies is also examined to find the optimal configuration. In terms of overall energetic/exergetic efficiencies, the highest performance belongs to ORC (78.4%/30.4%) while the lowest energetic and exergetic efficiencies belong to ORC‐IHE and RORC, respectively (56.3% and 25.65%). On the basis of a comparative study with the available literature, these values are higher than what is already reported for similar solar‐driven multigeneration systems. Appropriate thermal match and lower exergy destruction in the KCS, and bottoming cycle arrangement of the DEARC are the main reasons for such enhanced performance. This research not only contributes valuable insights into efficient solar‐driven systems but also sets a new benchmark for performance metrics in the existing literature.

Energy, exergy analysis in a hybrid power and hydrogen production system using biomass and organic Rankine cycle

This study conducts a thorough analysis of an integrated system that has been specifically engineered to generate power and hydrogen concurrently by utilizing biomass and an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Under its feed fluid heater and heat recovery exchanger, the ORC exhibits a dual-generation capability and is powered by biomass combustion. This research investigates a range of ORC configurations that utilize unique working fluids specifically designed for hydrogen production. A comprehensive thermodynamic model is applied to each fluid. An essential goal is to perform a parametric analysis, wherein the impact of critical parameters on the overall performance of the system is thoroughly examined. In addition, an innovative system comprising an integrated proton membrane exchange electrolyzer and biomass in ORC is presented in this study. An evaluation of the energy and exergy efficiencies of five distinct working fluids (R113, R114, R218, RC318, and R236fa) is conducted. The R113 working fluid exhibited the highest energy and exergy efficiencies, whereas the other fan working fluids were found to possess noteworthy characteristics. The R113 working fluid exhibits exergy and energy efficiencies of 67.15 % and 3.69 %, respectively. In addition, the study reveals valuable information regarding exergy losses in the electrolyzer and evaporator, emphasizing their impact on the generation of electricity. This study clarifies the correlation between fluctuations in temperature within the biomass fluid and the subsequent alterations in power and hydrogen generation, uncovering a compromise characterized by a reduction in energy and exergy efficiency. Furthermore, the research illustrates how escalating the mass flow rates of biomass fluids results in a decline in energy and exergy efficiency while concurrently generating power and hydrogen.

Thermal-Economic Analysis of an Organic Rankine Cycle System with Direct Evaporative Condenser

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system for power generation has proven to be an effective technology for low-temperature waste heat utilization. Accurate prediction and comprehensive comparison of system performance under different conditions are necessary for the development and application of suitable ORC configurations. This paper proposed an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system using a direct evaporative condenser to realize performance enhancement and analyzed its dynamic performance based on the actual climatic condition, which is beneficial for the performance optimization of this system. This study begins with an introduction to the thermal economics model of the proposed system and evaluates the performance of the system based on the 3E (energy, exergy, economy) analysis method. Secondly, four candidate working fluids were compared and analyzed, leading to the selection of R142b as the best working fluid for the proposed system. Finally, the dynamic performance of the proposed system using the working fluid of R142b was analyzed based on the hourly environment temperature. The result showed that the net thermos-electric conversion efficiency of the system was negatively correlated with the ambient wet-bulb temperature. The annual average exergy efficiency of the system is about 65.79%, and the average exergy loss of the heat absorption unit, evaporative condenser, pump, and expander account for 61.07%, 6.92%, 2.99%, and 29.01% of the exergy loss of the system respectively. In the case 8760 h of operation per year, the payback period of the proposed ORC system using direct evaporative condenser is about 2.14 years.

Construction of multi-loop thermodynamic cycles: Methodology and case study

Developing renewable energy and improving the efficiency of the existing energy system are effective measures to realize CO2 emission reduction. This makes the energy utilization scenario more and more complex, which leads to the energy system needing to be able to utilize multiple heat source fluids and output multiple products. Compared with single-loop thermodynamic cycles (such as the basic configurations of Organic Rankine Cycle and Brayton Cycle), multi-loop thermodynamic cycles are more suitable for such complex energy utilization scenarios because of their complexity and variability. However, there is no systematic construction method for multi-loop thermodynamic cycles in the existing studies. Therefore, a novel construction method for multi-loop thermodynamic cycles is proposed based on the mapping from closed curves to thermodynamic cycles in this study. The multi-loop thermodynamic cycle is constructed by replacing edges of the closed curve with different thermodynamic processes. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using a test case of the double-pressure Brayton cycle and a summary of ten existing multi-loop thermodynamic cycles. The proposed method provides a new perspective for the construction of multi-loop thermodynamic cycles. This makes research on the construction of thermodynamic cycles more theoretical, which is beneficial to obtain some novel multi-loop thermodynamic cycles.

Comparative Thermodynamic Optimization of Organic Rankine Cycle Configurations for Geothermal Power Generation from an Abandoned Oil Well

This study was aimed at quantifying the net electrical power producible from an abandoned oil well in Nigeria using different organic Rankine cycle (ORC) configurations and working fluids. The geological features of a typical Nigerian oil well were employed in the study and a borehole heat exchanger was used for simulating the thermodynamic parameters of the heat source. Specifically, a subcritical ORC without a recuperator (SBC), a subcritical ORC with a recuperator (SBC-R), a supercritical ORC without a recuperator (SPC), and a supercritical ORC with a recuperator (SPC-R) were analyzed, using R115, R236fa, and R1234yf as working fluids. Results showed that between 272 kW and 875 kW of electrical power could be produced from the abandoned oil well using the most basic ORC configuration (SBC). Furthermore, it was obtained that the introduction of a recuperator would increase the ORC net power by about 13% for R236fa, 33% for R1234yf, and 107% for R115. Similarly, a switch from a subcritical ORC to a supercritical ORC configuration would increase net power for all the working fluids. Specifically, an increase in net power was estimated at 3.6% for R236fa, 46% for R1234yf, and 152% for R115 regarding a switch from the SBC to the SPC. Moreover, decreasing the condensation pressure of the ORC plants was observed to improve net power in all cases.

Selection of Organic Fluid Based on Exergetic Performance of Subcritical Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for Warm Regions

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) exhibits considerable promise in efficiently utilizing low-to-medium-grade heat. Currently, there is a range of organic fluids available in the market, and selecting the appropriate one for a specific application involves considering factors such as the cycle’s thermodynamic performance, plant size, and compatibility with turbomachinery. The objective of our study is to examine the exergetic performance of the ORC with internal heat regeneration. We analyze 12 different organic fluids to evaluate their suitability based on parameters like exergy efficiency and heat exchange area requirements. Additionally, we investigate the need for internal heat regeneration by comparing the overall exergy performance with a simpler ORC configuration. To ensure broad applicability, we consider source temperatures ranging from 150 to 300 °C, which are relevant to industrial waste heat, geothermal sources, and solar energy. For each case, we calculate specific net power output and the UA value (heat exchanger conductance) to gain insights into selecting the appropriate organic fluid for specific source temperatures. Cyclohexane, benzene, isopropyl alcohol, and hexafluorobenzene show poor exergy efficiency due to their high boiling points. Pentane and cyclopentane provides the highest exergy efficiency of 62.2% at source temperature of 300 °C, whereas pentane is found to be the most suitable at source temperatures of 200 and 150 °C with exergy efficiency of 67.7% and 61.7%, respectively. At 200 °C source temperature, RE347mcc achieves 65.9% exergy efficiency. The choice of organic fluid for a given heat source is highly influenced by its critical properties. Moreover, the normal boiling temperature of the organic fluid significantly impacts exergy destruction during the condensation process within the cycle.

OPTIMAL DESIGN OF ORGANIC RANKINE CYCLE POWER PLANTS FOR EFFICIENT UTILIZATION of BIOMASS ENERGY IN NIGERIA

This study investigated the optimal design choice among four organic Rankine cycle (ORC) configurations for efficient utilization of solid biomass energy in Nigeria. Although vast opportunities exist for large-scale biomass power plants in the country, there has been little or no practical implementation yet, due to the limitation of technical know-how regarding thermodynamic conversion technologies. To bridge this gap, a thermodynamic optimization technique was applied in this study to the ORC. Specifically, the subcritical ORC (SUBORC), the regenerative subcritical ORC (SUBORC-REGEN), the supercritical ORC (SUPERORC), and the regenerative supercritical ORC (SUPERORC-REGEN) configurations were compared using established zero-dimensional optimization models implemented in MATLAB. Results showed that the SUPERORC-REGEN would be the most preferred choice amongst the options compared. Specifically, a palm kernel expeller (PKE) biomass fuel considered could yield about 1.98 MW of power at a thermal efficiency of about 28%. Additionally, it was obtained that the supercritical ORC would always outperform the subcritical types technically, with or without a regenerator. For the regenerative configurations, results showed that the supercritical ORC would generate 113 kW and 429 kW more net power than the subcritical ORC, respectively for n-pentane and n-butane working fluids. Similarly, the study reiterated that adopting a regenerative configuration would improve ORC performance. For instance, the SUPERORC-REGEN yielded 63% and 73% more power than the SUPERORC, respectively for n-pentane and n-butane working fluids. The practical economic implications of the different ORC configurations should be examined in future studies, alongside the investigation of exergy-based optimization potentials on component basis.

Exergoeconomic analysis and multi-objective optimization of ORC configurations via Taguchi-Grey Relational Methods

Recovery of low-grade waste heat in industrial processes is an essential energy management topic. Yet, most low-temperature heat sources discharge their heat directly into the environment. The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), which has the benefits of being energy-efficient, enabling investment savings, and being ecologically friendly, is crucial in recycling energy from low-temperature waste heat. Both the application of the optimum cycle design and the provision of optimum working conditions are the issues that need to be focused on efficiently using energy. This study performs the energy, exergy, and exergoeconomic analysis of four different organic Rankine cycle configurations operating with renewable or low grade waste heat. The effect degrees and ratios of selected control factors are calculated using Taguchi and variance analysis methods to compare thermal and exergy efficiencies, total system cost, and unit cost of electricity produced by the system. The objective function of the multi-objective optimization problem is defined, and its solution is realized with the Taguchi-Grey Relational Analysis method. The best thermodynamic and exergoeconomic performance result is calculated for the configuration of ORC with Feed Fluid Heater-Internal Heat Exchanger (IHE–FFH–ORC). As a result of Taguchi and ANOVA analysis, the factors that most affect the thermal efficiency of the system, the exergy efficiency, the total system investment cost, and the unit cost of the electricity produced are, respectively, the evaporation temperature (∼50%), turbine efficiency (∼25%), working fluid (∼20%), subcooling (∼4%), pump efficiency (∼0.05%), and superheating (∼0.05%). As a result of the optimization process, the thermal and exergy efficiencies, the total system cost and the unit cost of produced electricity for the IHE–FFH–ORC power system are calculated as 22.6% and 73.5%, 1.06 $/h, 0.039 $/kWh and 2.9 years, respectively.

Selection maps of dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle configurations for engine waste heat recovery applications

Dual-pressure organic Rankine cycles are widely used for engine waste heat recovery. Moreover, several dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle configurations exist. The configuration design and parameter optimisation of an optimal dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle system under different engine waste heat source conditions is difficult. Thus, an efficient and accurate selection method is required. To select system parameters for different waste heat sources quickly and accurately, this study proposes a method for constructing system selection maps. To use this method and verify its correctness, we applied it to a practical example of a dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle system selection process. The selection maps demonstrate that the best dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle system can increase the net output power and thermal efficiency by 8.34 %–28.52 % and 8.43 %–32.38 %, respectively, compared to the dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle system with the lowest net output power and thermal efficiency. After obtaining selection maps, the key parameters affecting the distribution of each selection map were analysed, as well as the map itself. The selection maps considered in this study provide a reference for appropriately selecting dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle systems for engine waste heat recovery. This research method can be extended to other areas (geothermal and solar) for waste heat recovery and other cycle configurations for optimum selection and design. In engineering applications, the selection map allows for quick and accurate determination of the best matching system for the target waste heat source, which reduces the capital and time costs of technical advice.

Comparison Study of Four Typical ORC Configurations for Different Waste Heat Characteristics of Engine

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC), as the most promising technology for engine waste heat recovery, has many configurations available to match the complicated engine waste heat conditions. This paper is aimed at revealing the characteristics of the engine waste heat condition for which different ORC configurations are matched so as to give selection guidance. The engine waste heat sources are characterized by the exhaust gas temperature (300°C-650°C) and the heat ratio of the high temperature waste heat to low temperature waste heat (0.5-1.5). Four mostly investigated configurations including the single-loop ORC, the cascade dual-loop ORC, the dual-pressure ORC, and the CO2 transcritical Rankine cycle (CTRC) are selected and modified to enable efficient utilization of all waste heat sources. Their thermodynamic performance is optimized for different waste heat characteristics. The results show improvements in net power for all configurations when exhaust gas temperature and heat ratio rise from 300°C, 0.5, to 650°C, 1.5, respectively, of which the high-temperature split CTRC (HTS-CTRC) recorded the largest increase of 183.58%, while the split regenerative ORC (SR-ORC), dual-pressure ORC (D-ORC), and split cascade ORC (SC-ORC) increased by 17.41%, 23.71%, and 35.45%, respectively. Two selection maps are established to provide general references for quickly selecting the configuration according to different waste heat characteristics whatever the engine type and operating conditions.

Design and Optimization of Organic Rankine Cycle Based on Heat Transfer Enhancement and Novel Heat Exchanger: A Review

The effective exploitation of renewable energy and the recovery of waste heat are two crucial strategies in achieving carbon neutrality. As an efficient and reliable heat–to–power conversion technology, the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been recognized and accepted by academia and industry for use in solar energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy, and waste heat applications. However, there remain unsolved technical challenges related to the design and operation of the components and system. As the exergy destruction and investment cost of heat exchangers exert significant influence on the performance of ORC, investigations on the performance improvement of heat exchangers are of great significance. The aim of this paper was to provide a review on the performance improvement of ORC in relation to heat transfer enhancement, heat exchanger design optimization, and cycle construction based on a novel heat exchanger. The performance of ORC using different types of heat exchangers was discussed and the importance of revealing the influence of heat exchanger structural parameters on ORC performance was assessed. The heat transfer enhancement, novel heat exchanger investigation, and the ORC configuration development based on a novel heat exchanger were emphasized. Finally, developments and current challenges were summarized and future research trends were also identified.

Thermodynamic Optimization of Subcritical and Supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle Power Plants for Waste Heat Recovery in Marine Vessels

Abstract This study was aimed at comparing the optimal thermodynamic performance of subcritical and supercritical organic Rankine cycle (ORC) plants for waste heat recovery from ship engines. The technical impacts of adopting a supercritical ORC scheme relative to the usual subcritical one have not been explicitly reported in the literature for heat recovery in ship engines, hence this study. The fluids R245fa, R134a, and R600a were employed for analysis due to their versatility in real systems. The ORC plants were modeled and optimized in matlab using established zero-dimensional models to satisfy the first law mass and energy balances. Results showed that introducing a recuperator would increase ORC performance. For the R600a which exhibited the best performance among the three working fluids, a net power output of 488.3 kW was obtained for the subcritical ORC without a recuperator (SYS A) and 543.7 kW for the one with a recuperator (SYS B). Furthermore, a switch to a supercritical ORC configuration increased the net power by about 29% for R134a and 10% for R600a, and increased the thermal efficiency by about 2.2 percentage points for R134a and 0.5 percentage points for R600a, referencing the supercritical configuration without a recuperator (SYS C) and SYS A.
