Missing one-loop contributions in secondary gravitational waves

We find several missing one-loop-order contributions in previous considerations about secondary gravitational waves induced at nonlinear order in cosmological perturbations. We consider a consistent perturbative expansion to third order in cosmological perturbations, including higher-order interactions and iterative solutions ignored in the previous literature. Tensor fluctuations induced by the source with two scalar and one tensor perturbations are correlated with the first-order tensor fluctuation and thus give a one-loop order correction to the tensor-power spectrum. The missing loop correction is scale invariant and negative in the superhorizon region, which secondarily reduces the initial primordial tensor-power spectrum prior to the horizon reentry. Such an IR behavior is very different from the autospectrum of second-order induced tensor modes discussed in the previous literature and can be important for the actual gravitational wave measurements. For a sharp peak of scalar fluctuations with ${A}_{\ensuremath{\zeta}}={10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ at ${k}_{*}={10}^{5}\text{ }h/\mathrm{Mpc}$ motivated by the LIGO/Virgo events, we show that the tensor-power spectrum at the cosmic microwave background scale reduces by at most 35%. Hence, the polarization B mode might not be seen because of the reduction of the original tensor spectrum due to the secondary effect of primordial black hole formation.

Cosmic evolution in DHOST theory with scaling solutions

We study cosmic evolution based on the fixed points in the dynamical analysis of the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We consider the DHOST theory in which the propagation speed of gravitational waves is equal to the speed of light, the tensor perturbations do not decay to dark energy perturbations, and the scaling solutions exist. The scaling fixed point associated with late-time acceleration of the universe can be either stable or saddle depending on the parameters of the theory. For some ranges of the parameters, this scaling fixed point and field-dominated fixed point can be simultaneously stable. Cosmic evolution will reach either the scaling attractor or the field-dominated attractor depending on the sign of the time derivative of the scalar field in the theory during the matter domination. The density parameter of dark matter can be larger than unity before reaching the scaling attractor if the deviation from Einstein’s theory of gravity is too large. For this DHOST theory, stabilities of {phi }-matter-dominated epoch (phi MDE) and field-dominated solutions are similar to the coupled dark energy models in Einstein gravity even though gravity is described by different theories. In our consideration, the universe can only evolve from the phi MDE regime to the field-dominated regime. The ghost and gradient instabilities up to linear order in cosmological perturbations have been investigated. There is no gradient instability, while the ghost instability can be avoided for some range of the model parameters.

Probing elastic interactions in the dark sector and the role of S8

We place observational constraints on two models within a class of scenarios featuring an elastic interaction between dark energy and dark matter that only produces momentum exchange up to first order in cosmological perturbations. The first one corresponds to a perfect-fluid model of the dark components with an explicit interacting Lagrangian, where dark energy acts as a dark radiation at early times and behaves as a cosmological constant at late times. The second one is a dynamical dark energy model with a dark radiation component, where the momentum exchange covariantly modifies the conservation equations in the dark sector. Using Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and Supernovae type Ia (SnIa) data, we show that the Hubble tension can be alleviated due to the additional radiation, while the $\sigma_8$ tension present in the $\Lambda$-Cold-Dark-Matter model can be eased by the weaker galaxy clustering that occurs in these interacting models. Furthermore, we show that, while CMB+BAO+SnIa data put only upper bounds on the coupling strength, adding low-redshift data in the form of a constraint on the parameter $S_8$ strongly favours nonvanishing values of the interaction parameters. Our findings are in line with other results in the literature that could signal a universal trend of the momentum exchange among the dark sector.

Linear anisotropies in dispersion-measure-based cosmological observables

We derive all contributions to the dispersion measure (DM) of electromagnetic pulses to linear order in cosmological perturbations, including both density fluctuations and relativistic effects. We then use this result to calculate the power spectrum of DM-based cosmological observables to linear order in perturbations. In particular, we study two cases: maps of the dispersion measure from a set of localized sources (including the effects of source clustering), and fluctuations in the density of DM-selected sources. The impact of most relativistic effects is limited to large angular scales, and is negligible for all practical applications in the context of ongoing and envisaged observational programs targeting fast radio bursts. We compare the leading contributions to DM-space clustering, including the effects of gravitational lensing, and find that the signal is dominated by the fluctuations in the free electron column density, rather than the local source clustering or lensing contributions. To compensate for the disappointing irrelevance of relativistic effects, we re-derive them in terms of the geodesic equation for massive particles in a perturbed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric.

Magnetic fields from cosmological bulk flows

ABSTRACT We explore the possibility that matter bulk flows could generate the required vorticity in the electron–proton–photon plasma to source cosmic magnetic fields through the Harrison mechanism. We analyse the coupled set of perturbed Maxwell and Boltzmann equations for a plasma in which the matter and radiation components exhibit relative bulk motions at the background level. These background bulk motions induce a relative velocity between the matter and cosmic microwave background rest frames at the present time, i.e. a bulk flow, with an amplitude β. We find that, to first order in cosmological perturbations, bulk flows with velocities compatible with current Planck limits (β < 8.5 × 10−4 at $95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ CL) could generate magnetic fields with an amplitude 10−21 G on 10 kpc comoving scales at the time of completed galaxy formation that could be sufficient to seed a galactic dynamo mechanism.

Cosmological evolution in DHOST theories

In the context of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories, we study cosmological solutions and their stability properties. In particular, we explicitly illustrate the crucial role of degeneracy by showing how the higher order homogeneous equations in the physical frame (where matter is minimally coupled) can be recast in a system of equations that do not involve higher order derivatives. We study the fixed points of the dynamics, finding the conditions for having a de Sitter attractor at late times. Then we consider the coupling to matter field (described for convenience by a k-essence Lagrangian) and find the conditions to avoid gradient and ghost instabilities at linear order in cosmological perturbations, extending previous work. Finally, we apply these results to a simple subclass of DHOST theories, showing that de Sitter attractor conditions, no ghost and no gradient instabilities conditions (both in the self-accelerating era and in the matter dominated era) can be compatible.

Cosmology on all scales: A two-parameter perturbation expansion

We propose and construct a two-parameter perturbative expansion around a Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker geometry that can be used to model high-order gravitational effects in the presence of non-linear structure. This framework reduces to the weak-field and slow-motion post-Newtonian treatment of gravity in the appropriate limits, but also includes the low-amplitude large-scale fluctuations that are important for cosmological modelling. We derive a set of field equations that can be applied to the late Universe, where non-linear structure exists on supercluster scales, and perform a detailed investigation of the associated gauge problem. This allows us to identify a consistent set of perturbed quantities in both the gravitational and matter sectors, and to construct a set of gauge-invariant quantities that correspond to each of them. The field equations, written in terms of these quantities, take on a relatively simple form, and allow the effects of small-scale structure on the large-scale properties of the Universe to be clearly identified. We find that inhomogeneous structures source the global expansion, that there exist new field equations at new orders, and that there is vector gravitational potential that is a hundred times larger than one might naively expect from cosmological perturbation theory. Finally, we expect our formalism to be of use for calculating relativistic effects in upcoming ultra-large-scale surveys, as the form of the gravitational coupling between small and large scales depends on the non-linearity of Einstein's equations, and occurs at what is normally thought of as first order in cosmological perturbations.

Fluctuations of differential number counts of radio continuum sources

We investigate the differential number counts of sources in radio continuum surveys, including all terms at linear order in cosmological perturbations. Our framework does not assume a specific gauge condition. This general approach allows us to recover gauge invariance explicitly. With the complete derivations of the covariant volume integral on the past light cone, we have identified several contributions in the number counts. To clarify their underlying physics, we present each contributions in terms of scalar, vector and tensor modes. This theoretical framework promises to be widely applicable to continuum radio galaxy surveys to model the expected angular power spectrum and two-point correlation.

Observable physical modes of modified gravity

At linear order in cosmological perturbations, departures from the growth in the cosmological standard model can be quantified in terms of two functions of redshift $z$ and Fourier number $k$. Previous studies have performed principal component forecasts for several choices of these two functions, based on expected capabilities of upcoming large structure surveys. It is typically found that there will be many well-constrained degrees of freedom. However, not all and, probably most, of these degrees of freedom were physical if the parametrization had allowed for an arbitrary $k$-dependence. In this paper, we restrict the $k$-dependence to that allowed in local theories of gravity under the quasi-static approximation, i.e. ratios of polynomials in $k$, and identify the best constrained features in the ($z$,$k$)-dependence of the commonly considered functions $\mu$ and $\gamma$ as measured by an LSST-like weak lensing survey. We estimate the uncertainty in the measurements of the eigenmodes of modified growth. We find that imposing the theoretical prior on $k$-dependence reduces the number of degrees of freedom and the covariance between parameters. On the other hand, imaging surveys like LSST are not as sensitive to the $z$-dependence as they are to the $k$-dependence of the modified growth functions. This trade off provides us with, more or less, the same number of well-constrained eigenmodes (with respect to our prior) as found before, but now these modes are physical.

Non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background induced by dipolar dark matter

In previous work [L. Blanchet and A. Le Tiec, Phys. Rev. D 80 (2009) 023524], motivated by the phenomenology of dark matter at galactic scales, a model of dipolar dark matter (DDM) was introduced. At linear order in cosmological perturbations, the dynamics of the DDM was shown to be identical to that of standard cold dark matter (CDM). In this paper, the DDM model is investigated at second order in cosmological perturbation theory. We find that the internal energy of the DDM fluid modifies the curvature perturbation generated by CDM with a term quadratic in the dipole field. This correction induces a new type of non-Gaussianity in the bispectrum of the curvature perturbation with respect to standard CDM. Leaving unspecified the primordial amplitude of the dipole field, which could in principle be determined by a more fundamental description of DDM, we find that, in contrast with usual models of primordial non-Gaussianities, the non-Gaussianity induced by DDM increases with time after the radiation-matter equality on super-Hubble scales. This distinctive feature of the DDM model, as compared with standard CDM, could thus provide a specific signature in the CMB and large-scale structure probes of non-Gaussianity.

The seed magnetic field generated during recombination

Nonlinear dynamics creates vortical currents when the tight-coupling approximation between photons and baryons breaks down around the time of recombination. This generates a magnetic field at second order in cosmological perturbations, whose power spectrum is fixed by standard physics, without the need for any ad hoc assumptions. We present the fully relativistic calculation of the magnetic power spectrum, including the effects of metric perturbations, second-order velocity and the photon anisotropic stress, thus generalizing and correcting previous results. We also show that significant magnetogenesis continues to occur after recombination. The power spectrum $\sqrt{k^3 P_B} $ behaves as $ \propto k^4$ on large scales, and $\propto k^{0.5}$ on small scales, down to $\sim 1\,$Mpc. On cluster scales, the created field has strength $\sim 3\times 10^{-29}$ Gauss.

The radiative transfer for polarized radiation at second order in cosmological perturbations

This article investigates the full Boltzmann equation up to second order in the cosmological perturbations. Describing the distribution of polarized radiation by using a tensor valued distribution function, the second order Boltzmann equation, including polarization, is derived without relying on the Stokes parameters.

Challenges for creating magnetic fields by cosmic defects

We analyse the possibility that topological defects can act as a source of magnetic fields through the Harrison mechanism in the radiation era. We give a detailed relativistic derivation of the Harrison mechanism at first order in cosmological perturbations, and show that it is only efficient for temperatures above T ~ 0.2 keV. Our main result is that the vector metric perturbations generated by the defects cannot induce vorticity in the matter fluids at linear order, thereby excluding the production of currents and magnetic fields. We show that anisotropic stress in the matter fluids is required to source vorticity and magnetic fields. Our analysis is relevant for any mechanism whereby vorticity is meant to be transferred purely by gravitational interactions, and thus would also apply to dark matter or neutrinos.
