Bacterial virulence plays an important role in infection. Antibacterial virulence factors are effective for preventing crop bacterial diseases. Resin acid copper salt as an effective inhibitor exhibited excellent anti-Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) activity with an EC50 of 50.0 μg mL-1. Resin acid copper salt (RACS) can reduce extracellular polysaccharides' (EPS's) biosynthesis by down-regulating gumB relative expression. RACS can also effectively inhibit the bio-mass of Xoo biofilm. It can reduce the activity of Xoo extracellular amylase at a concentration of 100 μg mL-1. Meanwhile, the results of virtual computing suggested that RACS is an enzyme inhibitor. RACS displayed good curative activity with a control effect of 38.5%. Furthermore, the result of the phytotoxicity assessment revealed that RACS exhibited slight toxicity compared with the control at a concentration of 200 μg mL-1. The curative effect was increased to 45.0% using an additional antimicrobial agent like orange peel essential oil. RACS markedly inhibited bacterial pathogenicity at a concentration of 100 μg mL-1 in vivo.

Impact of Sweet Orange Peel Essential Oil on the Nutrient and Oxidative Stability of Aquafeed During the Storage Condition

The main goal of this study was to assess the qualitative composition of essential oil (P), a natural extract produced from wasted orange peels in the citrus processing sector. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the alterations in fish feeds when this essential oil is incorporated and stored. The essential oil was extracted from the orange peels provided for the study using the hydrodistillation method and the Clevenger apparatus. The study determined the volatile components of the oil with 100% accuracy. The primary constituent was identified as D-limonene, comprising 59.27% of the total composition. Subsequently, experimental feed groups were established by including the essential oil in the feed rations at ratios of ‰0 (P0), ‰0.5 (P5), ‰1 (P10), and ‰3 (P30). Under storage conditions, the feeds were stored in feed sacks for 60 days. Periodic samples were collected during storage and subjected to nutritional, microbiological, structural, and oxidation tests. The results of the study show that P had no protective effect in fish diets against the growth of yeasts, molds, and other mesophilic aerobic bacteria (p > 0.05). It was shown that the nutritional values varied over time during storage. However, this variation was not substantially correlated with the amount of P in the diets (p > 0.05). There was no discernible impact of the addition of P on the structural characteristics of the feed grains. Nevertheless, the inclusion of P substantially impeded the process of lipid oxidation in the diet (p<0.05). After the two-month storage period, it was shown that adding at least 1 ‰ of P to the fish meals prevented the peroxide generated from oxidation in the feed from exceeding acceptable levels.

Navel orange peel essential oil inhibits the growth and progression of triple negative breast cancer

BackgroundTriple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is a particular type of breast cancer with the highest mortality rate. Essential oils are concerned more and more as potential anti-cancer drugs.MethodsTNBC cells were treated with different concentrations of navel orange peel essential oil (NOPEO), and then a variety of experiments were performed to investigate the changes in the growth and progression of TNBC cells. MTT assay was performed to detect the proliferation of TNBC cells. The changes of cell cycle and apoptosis were analyzed by FACS. In order to explored the migration of TNBC cells, scratch wound assay was carried out. Western blotting and qPCR were used to examine the expression of proteins and mRNA of related genes. Furthermore, RNA-seq was used to analyze the altered genes and explored the possible signal pathway.ResultsNOPEO demonstrated dose- and time-dependent suppression of TNBC cell growth. TNBC cells showed an increased percentage of G2/M-phase cells and the protein levels of CyclinB1 and CyclinD1 were decreased after NOPEO treatment. The apoptotic cells were increased in the NOPEO treated TNBC cells. The migration mobility was significantly inhibited by NOPEO. In total, 1376 genes were found to be up-regulated and 1335 genes were down-regulated after NOPEO treatment. According to KEGG and GO pathways, the differentially expressed genes were related to MAPK, Jak/stat and FoxQ signaling pathways.ConclusionThis investigation explored the bio-activity and molecular mechanisms of NOPEO against TNBC cells. These results indicated that NOPEO could suppress TNBC growth and migration perhaps via the MAPK and Jak/stat signaling pathways, which may provide theoretical reference for anticancer drug development. NOPEO may be a potential natural product for the chemotherapeutic of TNBC.

Main Components of The Semboro Variety of Siam Orange Peel Essential Oil Prepared Using Water Distillation Method

The maximum production potential for low quality oranges is 15% or 9,057 tons/year, the potential for orange peel waste is 50% of the total weight of oranges or the equivalent of 4,500 tons of orange peel waste The average yield of orange peel essential oil is 0.6%, resulting in a potential of 27 tons/year. The aim of this research is to obtain information regarding the best heating temperature in the distillation process and to identify the main components of Siam orange peel essential oil of the Semboro variety. The research was carried out using a laboratory-scale water distillation system, with a distillation flask capacity of 1 liter, with 150 g of orange peel as raw material at a distillation process heating temperature of 250°C and 300°C. The yields of 1.9 mL and 0.9 mL of Siam orange peel essential oil were obtained 1.083% and 0.513% respectively. The specific gravity of Siam orange peel essential oil is 0.855 g/cm3 and 0.886 g/cm3 respectively, the main components are 29 and 18 components respectively. An important finding of this research is that at a distillation process with heating temperature of 250°C, yields a limonene content of 16.10%, whereas heating at 300°C results in 7.69% limonene content. The Effect of Hydrodistillation Times and Cold Pressing on Yield and Composition of Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) Peel Essential Oil

Within the scope of the study, the effect of hydro-distillation times on Citrus sinensis (Navelina) fresh peel essential oil composition was investigated. For this purpose, five different distillation times (10, 15, 30, 60, and 120 min.) were evaluated. Research findings showed that the distillation time was not effective on the orange essential oil composition. It was determined that the most important components of C.sinensis peel essential oil were limonene (96.52-96.61%) and myrcene (2.03-2.06%). In addition, hydrodistillation (HD) and cold press (CP) essential oils were compared in terms of yield and some physical and chemical properties. In terms of oil yield and optical activity, the values of the oil obtained by hydrodistillation method were higher than those obtained by cold press, and the refractive index and density values were found to be lower. In terms of component ratios, it was seen that there was no significant difference between the two methods.

Antioxidants are chemicals that can inhibit or stop other molecules from oxidizing. Antioxidants can be found in the fruit known as sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). Orange peel essential oil is utilized in processed foods, medicines, cosmetics, and aromatherapy in the medical field. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the chemical content and antioxidant potential of sweet orange peel to be used as a lip balm. Processing sweet orange peel, steam distillation of essential oil, GC-MS analysis, formulating lip balm preparation, assessing lip balm preparation, and measuring antioxidant activity using a spectrophotometer and DPPH technique, were part of this study. Essential oil from sweet orange peel (Citrus sinensis L.) was analyzed using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy), and the results obtained in this study were 1.4 - Cyclohexadiene, 1 - methyl. The lip balm formulation containing essential oil was evaluated as the most preferred formulation. The IC50 value of sweet orange peel essential oil was determined to be 85.2595386 ppm, which converts the antioxidant to strong.

Bacteriolytic activity of ruminal protozoa is affected by rate and type of common essential oils: Effect of thyme oil

Over the past two decades, research into the effects of essential oils (EOs) on rumen microorganisms as an alternative to antibiotics has intensified. Yet, there are few investigations on rumen protozoa. To evaluate if EOs have antiprotozoal efficacy against rumen protozoa, the present investigation was conducted. Using the potentiality of rumen protozoa to digest 14C-labeled bacteria, the influence of EOs on in vitro protozoal activity was determined. For the study, orange peel, cinnamon, laurel, oleaster, garlic, and thyme essential oils were selected. Control (without essential oil), 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, and 5000 mg/kg dosages were used. Except for garlic oil, all essential oils showed a notable effect on antiprotozoal activity. The highest antiprotozoal impact was reported at 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg doses of thyme oil, with respective reductions of 89.1% and 84.8% in bacteria degraded by protozoa. Cinnamon and oleaster oils had the strongest antiprotozoal efficacy at a concentration of 5000 mg/kg. At 5000 mg/kg doses of oleaster and cinnamon oils, the quantity of 14C-labeled bacteria degraded by protozoa was reduced by 96% compared to the group that served as the control. In conclusion, orange peel, cinnamon, laurel, oleaster, and thyme oils demonstrated remarkable in vitro antiprotozoal activity; however, more comprehensive research is required to analyse the effects of the EOs used in this study on rumen living groups such as protozoa, bacteria, and yeast and on rumen dynamics.

A novel antioxidant and antimicrobial food packaging based on Eudragit ®/collagen electrospun nanofiber incorporated with bitter orange peel essential oil

A novel nanofiber for potential use in food packaging was developed by blending Eudragit ® (Eu) and collagen (Co) at varying ratios. Among these blends, Eu/Co nanofiber with a 70:30 ratio was identified as the optimal composition due to its bead-free morphology, fine fiber diameter (279.6 nm), high tensile stress (6.9 MPa), desirable water contact angle (WCA) of 72.18°, low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 423.51 g/m2 × 24 h, and favorable porosity (65.4%). To further enhance its properties, bitter orange peel essential oil (BE) (up to 100 μL/mL) was incorporated into the optimal blend, resulting in a reduced fiber diameter (211.6 nm), increased tensile stress (8.5 MPa), and enhanced porosity (73.5%). Moreover, BE induced potential antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in the nanofibers, effectively inhibiting the growth of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria while scavenging up to 50% of DPPH radicals, respectively. Importantly, none of the nanofiber samples exhibited cytotoxicity toward Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) over a 72-h period, demonstrating their biocompatibility. These findings highlight the suitability of Eu and Co-based nanofibers enriched with bioactive compounds like BE for use in food packaging applications.

Optimisation of supercritical fluid extraction of orange (Citrus sinenis L.) peel essential oil and its physicochemical properties

In this study, the choice of supercritical fluid extraction as a renewable alternative for extracting orange peel essential oil (OPEO) was motivated by concerns about sustainability with conventional solvent extraction methods. The physical and chemical characteristics of OPEO were examined to assess its potential as a sustainable resource. The extraction process was optimised, and the ideal conditions determined were 317.51 min of extraction time at 74.85 °C with a solvent-to-sample ratio of 4. Analysis of the extracted OPEO revealed significant values for saponification (121.67 mg KOH/g), acid (4.13 mg KOH/g), ester (117.54 mg KOH/g), and free fatty acid (1.56 mg KOH/g) content, demonstrating its composition. Notably, key ingredients such as Limonene (43.96%), α-pinene (15.60%), β-myrcene (10.21%), γ-terpinene (5.00%), and α-terpineol (4.15%) were found in high proportions according to chemical composition analysis. Furthermore, OPEO exhibited excellent antioxidant properties with an IC50 value of 7.73 ± 2.00 mg/mL and displayed notable antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms, including P. aeruginosa (17.7 ± 0.6 mm), E. coli (11.0 ± 0.0 mm), K. pneumoniae (10.7 ± 0.6 mm), and S. aureus (10.3 ± 0.6 mm). These findings have significant implications for the flavor and fragrance sector, as well as for the food preservation industry.

The Potency of Locally Available Orange Peel Essential Oil as A Feed Additive to Improve Performances of Poultry

Indonesia as a tropical country has several orange varieties grown in the archipelago. The peel which contributes about 10 – 14% of the whole orange, is a potential waste to be utilized for making essential oil useful as an Antibiotic Growth Promoter (AGP) for poultry. Therefore, elaborative research is needed, because there are about 258 oranges from the genus citrus only. Since, many methods have been developed, to find a cheap method for the extraction of essential oil, and then protect the oil from evaporating before being implemented as a feed additive. Some foreign research on the use of orange peel essential oil shows prospective results. It is expected then, that the use of local orange peel essential oil will enable to replace the use of imported essential oil which is more expensive to the feed mills industry.

Penyulingan Dan Karakterisasi Minyak Atsiri Dari Kulit Jeruk Peras (Citrus x microcarpa Bunge) Dengan Metode Distilasi Uap Air

In this study, squeezed orange peel was distilled by water vapor distillation method to extract its essential oil, which can be used as an antioxidant. The fixed variable is the weight of 3 kg of squeezed orange peel with a size of ±1 cm-2 cm and a temperature of 125 ℃ and a pressure of 1.2 bar. Independent variables are the ratio of squeezed orange peel:water 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, sampling time, 3 hours 4 hours 5 hours and 6 hours. The dependent variables are essential oil yield analysis, essential oil density analysis, essential oil refractive index analysis, essential oil component analysis by GC-MS and essential oil antioxidant analysis by DPPH method. The most yield and volume of squeezed orange peel oil was obtained at a ratio of 1: 2 with a sampling time of 6 hours, namely as much as 1.2289% and 43 mL. From the density obtained, all samples of squeezed orange peel essential oil meet SNI 06-0009-1987 while the closest to ISO 3140, 2019 is the 1:2 ratio of squeezed orange peel essential oil. From the refractive index obtained, the closest to SNI 06-0009-1987 and ISO 3140, 2019 is the 1:2 ratio of squeezed orange peel essential oil. From the component test and antioxidant test, the highest dl-Limonene composition was obtained at a ratio of 1:5 with a sampling time of 6 hours, namely 54.94% and very strong antioxidant strength of 49.07 µg/mL.

Utilization of Wasted Cooking Oil and Essential Oil of Sweet Orange Peel (Citrus sinensis) as Aromatherapy Candles

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Utilizations of waste cooking oil can be projected to be candles. Sweet orange (<em>Citrus sinensis</em>) peel, considering the large amount of this abandoned waste, also can be utilized as essential oil. This research was conducted to examine the production of aromatherapy candles by purifying the wasted cooking oil and adding the sweet orange peel essential oil. Steam distillation method was used to extract essential oils by determining the effect of raw material conditions on the yield obtained. The essential oils obtained from fresh peel was 1.87% of yield with 94.37% limonene, while dry one was 2.16% yield with 94.67% limonene by GC-MS analysis. Adsorption method by activated carbon was carried out to purify the wasted cooking oil as candle materials, varied by 7%, 10%, and 13% mass of activated carbon. The addition of the highest mass of activated carbon gave the lowest absorbance and indicated that the purified oil was the brightest. Utilization of refined wasted oil was mixed with stearin and sweet orange peel essential oil of 2%, 4%, and 6% by weight as aromatherapy candle product. Characteristics of candle was investigated by analyzing the melting point, burning time, organoleptic, and preference test for respondents and resulted that all characters meet Indonesian National Standard. Purification of wasted cooking oil varied by activated carbon mass influenced the color of the candles. Effects of Essential Oils and Ultrasonic Treatments on Properties of Edible Coatings and Their Application on Citrus Fruits

AbstractIn present study, the effects of orange peel essential oil and ultrasonic treatment on properties of corn starch based edible coating and films including their effects on the shelf life of citrus (Kinnow) fruits are investigated. The ultrasonic approach and essential oil significantly improves the quality characteristics of edible coating formulations, stability, and rheological behaviour of coating materials by reducing the particle size, including antimicrobial activity. The particle size of the coating materials reduces from 2495 nm (control) to 298.8 nm by ultrasonication treatment with improved stability (−39.251 mV) as well as antimicrobial activity. The tensile strength (720 N) and solubility (32.40%) of the CSEOU edible film are also improved as compared to CSEO and CS edible films. The coating formulation enriched with essential oil and ultrasonic treatment (CSEOU) improves the shelf‐life of Kinnow by retarding weight loss (PLW) and microbial load, as well as maintaining higher acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and higher antioxidant activity. CSEOU treated samples indicate lowest weight loss (24.57%), pH (3.89) with higher TA (3.999%), firmness (494.229 N), phenolic (26.17 mg 100 g−1), flavonoid (34.11 mg 100 g−1), antioxidant (49.04%), and antimicrobial activity against A. niger, E. coli and S. aureus as compared to other samples.

Effect of Five Different Maturation Stages on the Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Syrian Sour Orange (Citrus aurantium L.) Peel Essential Oil

Abstract: For the first time, the composition of Essential Oils (EOs) from Syrian Citrus aurantium L. peel and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity was studied over five different stages of ripening; (R1: Sep 2021, green; R2: Oct, Yellowish-green; R3: Nov, Greenish-yellow; R4: Dec, Yellow; R5: Jan 2022, orange). EOs were extracted by a hydro-distillation method using the Clevenger apparatus, and their components were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of EOs were determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and the dilution method, respectively. The results showed that the highest EO yield (1.68 ± 0.05 mL/100 g peel) was achieved during the fruit ripe stage R5. However, the maturation stage has no significant effect on the limonene proportion (98.5%), which is the most abundant compound in Syrian C. aurantium peels EO. Moreover, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl inhibition efficacy for EOs was the highest in the R1 stage and had an IC50 value of 83.48 ± 0.01 mg/mL. EO from the R1 stage showed the best values of minimum inhibitory concentration MIC (0.0035 ± 0.0011 and 0.0900 ± 0.0023 nL/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively, suggesting the importance of using these EOs as natural preservatives in food products.

Initial Analysis of The Characteristics of Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis) Peel Essential Oils as an Alternative Surfactant in The Tertiary Oil Recovery Method

Surfactant flooding is one of the types of EOR that reduces the surface tension between two immiscible fluids. The essential oil of sweet orange peel (citrus sinensis) contains a methyl ester group found in the pectin of sweet orange peel, so it has the potential as a raw material for making Methyl Ester Sulfonate by transesterification and sulfonation processes using H2SO4 reactants. This research is focused on testing the MES characteristics of the essential oil of orange peel in the form of density, viscosity, pH, acid number, and compatibility tests. The results of testing the characteristics of the essential oil of sweet orange peel obtained a density of 0.9 g/cm3, a viscosity of 1.36 cP, a neutral pH of 7, and an acid number of 3.048%, so based on these characteristic values the MES of the essential oil of orange peel was included in the initial screening. Alternative MES. Based on the surfactant compatibility test with a concentration scenario of 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, and 1% in brine with a salinity of 15,000 ppm, the best is the 0.1% surfactant scenario. However, all scenarios qualify for compatibility. Certain surfactant solutions are not clear or cloudy, but that does not mean they cannot be injected

Penggunaan Kulit Pisang pada Proses Pemurnian Minyak Esensial Kulit Buah Jeruk Pontianak

This study aims to investigate the effect of using banana peels in the process of refining Pontianak orange peel essential oil and to assess the effect of soaking time on banana skin yield, clarity value, and quality of Pontianak orange peel essential oil. Completely randomized design (CRD) method with four different treatments, namely soaking time of banana peels for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, and 4 days, was used in this study with three repetitions. The results showed that the longer the banana peel soaked in orange peel essential oil, the turbidity level of the oil decreased significantly. The highest turbidity was recorded at 37 NTU, while the lowest turbidity reached 17 NTU. The organoleptic test results for clarity, color, and aroma showed significant differences between the samples, which can be seen from the calculated F value which is greater than the table F value at a significance level of 5% and 1%.
