Skull adapted for teaching roentgenographic technique

The purpose of the project described here was to develop a teaching aid for oral roentgenology. Windows were prepared in the maxilla and mandible of a skull so that a light source, representing the focal spot of an x-ray machine, passing through the window would produce an image on a film packet which is positioned by means of standard film-holding devices. This teaching aid offers the following advantages: 1. 1. It serves as an intermediate step between classroom and clinic, reducing time consumption and unnecessary radiation during the trial-and-error period. 2. 2. A concept of target-film-object relationship can be easily visualized. 3. 3. This inexpensive laboratory teaching aid can be used in other than roentgenology courses.

Quantified cinefluorographic techniques used in oral roentgenology

A brief anatomic and cinefluorographic orientation for the development of roentgenographic quantification techniques for use in oral roentgenology has been discussed. Basic principles for the development of various types of standard grid systems to analyze static (cephalometric) and dynamic (cinefluorographic) roentgenographic film data have been presented.

Oral Roentgenographic Diagnosis; Including an Appendix on Roentgenographic Technic.

The text is well organized, objective, and readable, reflecting both Dr. Stafne's extensive experience in the field of oral roentgenology and his exposure to a wealth of clinical material at the Mayo Clinic. Emphasis on interpretation, with relegation of the description of techniques, hazards, etc, to an appendix, enhances the reference value of the book. Illustrations are well chosen, numerous, and of good quality. A well-written introductory chapter on anatomic landmarks of the jaws reemphasizes the importance of a working knowledge of roentgenographic anatomy as a prerequisite to the interpretation of pathological changes. Roentgenographic interpretation of periodontal disease is adequately covered and should help orient the physician to oral changes endemic in middle-age populations. The chapters on roentgenographic interpretation of oral cavity tumors provide an excellent basis for roentgenographic differential diagnosis of benign and malignant lesions. The effective use of x-ray radiation in dentistry

A report of the Radiation Protection Committee of the American Academy of Oral Roentgenology on recommendation for reducing exposure to patient and dentist during oral radiographic procedures is reviewed. The following aspects of the problem of exposure reduction are considered: max permissible exposures to operators and patients, sources of radiation in dental offices, recommended building materials to be used for wall construction (with their lead equivalents), and detailed statements of procedures for protecting operators and patients. Challenges and opportunities in dental teacher education

In 1959 and 1960 the University of Illi­ nois College of Dentistry conducted a teacher education program consisting of dental teacher institutes, an institute for practicing dentists, an institute on teach­ ing oral roentgenology, faculty seminars and conferences, informal student semi­ nars, a course for graduate and post­ graduate students, and departmental studies involving research in teaching procedures. T h e program was supported by the Kellogg Foundation and a grant from the National Institu te o f D ental Research. T he objective was to study means by which the knowledge of den­ tistry can be taught most effectively to dental students.

Vision and oral roentgenology

The subject of vision as it is related to oral roentgenology has been discussed. The pertinent findings of investigators working in the field of optics are presented to inform the oral diagnostician of this relationship. Attention is drawn to the need for dentists to utilize good viewing techniques when examining roentgenograms. This article also indicates that much information is needed concerning the visual process and its relationship to diagnostic roentgenology.

A device for centering and angulating x-rays in oral roentgenology

There has been much recent progress in reducing radiation hazards and in increasing the quality of roentgenograms. New techniques associated with this progress have created problems directly related to angulating the x-ray machine. A device which solves some of the problems concerned with angulation and centering of the x-ray beam has been described in this article.

Differential Roentgenologic Diagnosis for the Oral Surgeon

Intraoral roentgenography provides a third hand for the oral surgeon. It is the procedure most frequently employed for the preoperative and postoperative study of the tissues of the jaws and deserves credit for doing more to alter the nature and character of the work done by oral surgeons than any other aid. Oral roent­ genology has reached the status of a specialty within the practice of dentistry. It is not likely that the oral surgeon who has prepared for his specialty in the shortest time possible will have had an opportunity to gain sufficient experience in oral medicine and oral roentgenology to make him an expert, unless in his training he had an opportunity to handle thousands of patients, for each of whom complete physical and medical histories were obtained, tests and examinations were made, consultation, treatment or surgical intervention, or all t^ree, were carried out as indicated, with a follow-up study to demonstrate not only the efficacy of the prescribed treatment but, more important, the correctness of the diag­ nosis. It may follow, then, that the oral surgeon has as much need of help from the oral roentgenologist as the oral roent­ genologist has need of help from the oral surgeon. It is axiomatic that the patient will be served better by the combined efforts of the oral roentgenologist and oral surgeon than by either alone. The responsibility of obtaining roent­ genograms by the generous use o f film at different angles, and the use of contrast medium suitable for study, along with other roentgenologic aids to provide a result which is sharp in detail, falls to the roentgenologist. Oral Roentgenology. A Roentgen Study of the Anatomy and Pathology of the Oral Cavity.

This book is a roentgenographic atlas consisting of 311 halftone reproductions of roentgenograms of the teeth and maxillary bones, and thirty-five pages of text. It is divided into four parts: (1) studies of the normal tissues; (2) studies of pathologic oral conditions; (3) use of roentgenograms as an aid in treatment, and (4) examination of the oral tissues in somatic disease. The first part illustrates the development of both the temporary and the permanent teeth, and the structure of the several regions of the maxillae and mandible. In the second part there are forty-three illustrations of unerupted and misplaced teeth, mostly lower third molars and upper cuspids; forty-one in the group illustrating alveolar abscess, twenty-seven in the group illustrating chronic pericementitis, three of fractures of the mandible, two of odontoma, and eleven of various types of cysts.
