Prevalence and risk factors of oral human papillomavirus infection among 4212 healthy adults in Hebei, China

BackgroundHuman papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an essential cause of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma that is increasing in incidence worldwide. However, little is known about the epidemiology of oral HPV infection among healthy adults in China.MethodsA study in northern China was conducted in 2021 as baseline data of Diverse Life-Course Cohort (DLCC). Residents who aged above 20 were eligible to participate. Oral swab specimens and questionnaires were collected from 4226 participants. HPV DNA in oral exfoliated cells was tested by Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction approach and sequencing. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the associations between exposure factors and oral HPV infection.ResultsOverall prevalence of oral HPV infection was 4.08% (95%CI, 3.69%-4.68%). The most prevalent HPV type detected was HPV-81 (1.35%; 95% CI, 1.00%–1.70%), followed by HPV-16 (0.64%; 95% CI, 0.40%–0.88%). Oral HPV infection presented a bimodal pattern with respect to age in male and female participants. Oral HPV prevalence of male participants was significantly higher than prevalence of female participants (5.0% versus 3.6%, P = 0.041). Prevalence of oral HPV was higher among current smokers (OR = 1.59; 95% CI, 1.11–2.29; P = 0.039) and current drinkers (OR = 1.60; 95% CI, 1.14–2.25; P = 0.023). Current alcohol consumption was independently associated with oral HPV infection (OR = 1.74; 95% CI, 1.22–2.50; P = 0.010).ConclusionsAmong healthy adults aged above 20 in Hebei, China, the prevalence of high-risk HPV infection was 1.92% (95%CI, 1.51%-2.34%). Oral HPV prevalence was independently associated with alcohol consumption. More tailored prevention strategies are needed to prevent oral HPV infection through smoking cessation, reduction of alcohol consumption, and HPV vaccination.

ObjectiveTo determine the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the oral mucosa of blood donors (BD) and risk factors associated with HPV and oral cancer. Materials and methodsProspective cross-sectional study, population matched to BD from the National Cancer Institute, Mexico for HPV identification in oral cytological samples using the CLART® Human Papillomavirus 2 Kit (35 genotypes) and risk factors. ResultsOf 352 BD with signed informed consent, 285 were selected by simple randomization. The prevalence of oral HPV was 17.5% (95% CI 13–21.9%), the genotype was identified in 13 cases, with a total of 16 genotypes (10 high-risk), the most common being 16 and 84. Five cases had multiple infections, three with at least one high-risk type. Associations were found for marital status (OR 3.3) and educational level (OR-1.9). ConclusionsThe percentage of HPV-positive cases in blood donors with no risk practices was similar to that found in Spanish-speaking population studies in which at least one risk practice was described. The presence of other genotypes with high oncogenic risk and multitype infection, described as a marker of persistence of HPV infection, is highlighted.

Oral Human Papillomavirus Prevalence and Genotyping Among a Healthy Adult Population in the US

In the US, oropharyngeal cancer, predominantly caused by high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is the most frequent HPV-associated cancer, surpassing cervical cancer. However, little is known about oral HPV prevalence and genotype distribution in the general population. To assess oral HPV prevalence and factors associated with HR and low-risk infection in a general US population. PROGRESS (Prevalence of Oral HPV Infection, a Global Assessment) was a cross-sectional observational study conducted between November 2021 and March 2022 in 43 dental offices in the US (24 urban, 13 urban cluster, and 6 rural sites), spanning 21 states. Eligible participants were aged 18 to 60 years, visiting dental clinics for routine dental examination. Dental clinics used targeted sampling to recruit equal distributions of men and women and across age groups. Participants provided an oral gargle specimen for HPV DNA and genotyping and completed behavioral questionnaires, and dentists reported oral health status. Detection of HPV DNA and genotyping was performed using the SPF10/DEIA/LiPA25 system at a central laboratory. Oral HPV prevalence. Of the 3196 participants enrolled, mean (SD) age was 39.6 (12.1) years, and 55.5% were women. Oral HPV prevalence was 6.6% (95% CI, 5.7%-7.4%) for any HPV genotype, and 2.0% (95% CI, 1.5%-2.5%), 0.7% (95% CI, 0.4%-1.0%), and 1.5% (95% CI, 1.1%-1.9%) for HR, HPV-16, and 9-valent-HPV vaccine types, respectively. Among HPV-positive participants, HPV-16 was the most prevalent genotype (12.4% among men and 8.6% among women). Prevalence of HPV was higher in men than women and highest among men aged 51 to 60 years (16.8%, 6.8%, and 2.1% for any HPV, HR HPV, and HPV-16, respectively). Factors associated with HR oral infection included being male (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 3.1; 95% CI, 1.2-8.5), being aged 51 to 60 years (AOR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.5-7.3), having 26 or more lifetime male sex partners (AOR, 6.5; 95% CI, 2.3-18.7), and having 6 to 25 lifetime female oral sex partners (AOR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.3-8.7). In this cross-sectional study, oral HPV burden was highest among older men who may be at higher risk of developing oropharyngeal cancer. In addition to male sex and older age, HR oral HPV infection was also associated with sexual behaviors, including increasing number of male sex partners and female oral sex partners.

Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV vaccination in an Australian cohort.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is increasing in incidence, yet very little is known about oral HPV infection in the general population. In this Australian-based study we assess oral HPV prevalence according to HPV vaccination status. Participants of the Oral Diversity Study were Australian residents, aged 18 to 70 years, who filled out a questionnaire about lifestyle and sexual behaviour, and donated a saliva sample in 2020 to 2021. We obtained permission to access HPV vaccination status through record linkage with the Australian Immunisation Register. Saliva samples were DNA extracted, DNA quality checked and analysed for HPV. We recruited 1023 participants to the Oral Diversity Study. Nine hundred twenty-one returned a saliva sample for analysis, 911 passed the DNA quality check and were included in the study. The oral HPV prevalence was 7.2%, and was strongly associated with sexual behaviours. We identified 27 different HPV types; 53% of participants carried high-risk HPV types, with no difference between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated groups (53% both, P = .979). Two hundred thirty participants (26%) were HPV vaccinated. The oral prevalence of the nine HPV types included in the nonavalent HPV vaccine was significantly lower in the vaccinated participants compared to the unvaccinated (0.9% vs 3.4%; P = .022). These findings suggest that a sizeable minority of Australian residents harbour oral HPV infections, and many of these are high-risk subtypes. We found some evidence that HPV vaccination resulted in lower prevalence of oral HPV infections of vaccine-specific types. Larger surveys are required to confirm these findings.

Prevalence of oral HPV among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Pune, India

Background: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are at an increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related head and neck cancers (HNCs). However, there is little data on the prevalence of oral HPV among PLHIV in India, limiting the planning of oral HPV preventive strategies. Methods: We used cross-sectional data from an oral cancer screening study conducted at the antiretroviral therapy (ART) centre of Byramjee-Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College-Sassoon General Hospitals (BJGMC-SGH). PLHIV ≥21 years of age with no prior history of HNCs were enrolled. We determined the prevalence of high-risk oncogenic HPV (hrHPV) and low-risk non-oncogenic HPV (lrHPV) using real-time PCR and Next-Generation Sequencing. We used multinomial logistic regression to determine the prevalence ratios (PRs) of different sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioural predictors with hrHPV and lrHPV. Multivariable models were adjusted for age, sex, CD4 count and duration on ART. Results: Of the 582 PLHIV enrolled, the median age was 40 years (IQR: 34–46) and 54% were male. More than a fourth (25.8%) had multiple sexual partners and 11% had given oral sex. Median CD4 counts were 510 cells/mm3 (IQR: 338–700). The prevalence of hrHPV was 4.5% and lrHPV was 3.4%. Of those with hrHPV, 77% had HPV16. There were no significant associations with any predictors for both lrHPV and hrHPV in adjusted analyses. Conclusions: We found the prevalence of any oral HPV (hrHPV and lrHPV) to be 7.9% among PLHIV in India. Larger studies are required to better understand risk factors for oral HPV among Indian PLHIV.

Dynamics of oral human papillomavirus infection in healthy population and head and neck cancer.

The recent increase in high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV)-associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers has gained considerable importance due to their distinct clinical and molecular characteristics. However, the natural history of oral HPV from acquisition to persistence and malignant transformation is still unclear. The global prevalence of oral HPV infection in healthy individuals ranges from 0.67% to 35%, while 31%-38.5% in head and neck cancer (HNC). The persistence rate of oral HR-HPV infection is 5.5% -12.8% globally. India has the highest HNC burden due to apparent differences in predisposing factors compared with the West. The prevalence of oral HPV in healthy individuals and its contribution to HNC is less evident in Indian studies. HR-HPV-associated HNC in this region accounts for 26%, with an active infection in 8%-15% of these tumors. There is a lack of concordance in the expression of p16 as a surrogate marker for HPV detection in HNC because of differences in behavioral risk factors. Due to a lack of evidence, treatment de-escalation cannot be implemented despite the improved outcome of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers. This review critically analyzes the existing literature on the dynamics of oral HPV infection and HPV-associated HNC, identifying potential avenues for future research. A better understanding of the oncogenic role of HR-HPV in HNC will help to formulate novel therapeutic approaches and is expected to have a significant public health impact as preventive strategies can be implemented.

Prevalence and concordance of oral and genital HPV by sexual orientation among US men.

The objective of our study was to describe oral and genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection prevalence and concordance by sexual orientation among US men using a nationally representative sample. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of the 2013-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The survey conducts a physical examination and collects oral rinse and genital swab specimens; demographic and health behaviors are self-reported. We used descriptive statistics and multivariate regression models to estimate HPV infection prevalence and the likelihood of HPV infection, respectively. All analyses were adjusted for National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey design and weights, and statistical significance was tested at a 2-sided P value of less than .05. Men who have sex with men had a statistically significantly higher prevalence of oral HPV (high-risk, 9-valent, 4-valent, and HPV 16 and 18), genital HPV (9-valent, 4-valent, and HPV 16 and 18), and concordant oral and genital HPV (high-risk and 9-valent) infections compared with heterosexual men. Improved HPV prevention among men is needed.

Prevalence of oral HPV in the adult sample population in Sydney.

Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas are increasing in incidence. Risk factors include sexual behaviour, high-risk oral HPV infection and poor oral hygiene. We aimed to provide initial information on the prevalence and assess the feasibility of testing in dental settings. Patients ≥18 years old attending dental clinics in Sydney, Australia, were recruited, oral hygiene assessed, and 10 mL saline oral rinses obtained. Rinses were tested for HBG and HPV by PCR. Participants completed demographic and behavioural questionnaires. The mean age was 48 years, of whom 131 (43.6%) were male. HPV genotypes, one each of 16, 66, 51, 35 and 58 in five participants, and 18 and 52 in one participant, were detected in six samples (2.0%), all men. Oral sex was reported by 89 (67.9%) male participants. One participant (4.3%) of the 23 with poor OH had at least one HPV genotype detected. With dental patients willing to provide rinse samples and disclose potentially sensitive information, we found the hrHPV prevalence of 2%. Given large proportions of the general population attending dental clinics regularly, dentists may be ideally placed to screen for oropharyngeal carcinoma and contribute to the currently limited knowledge of oral HPV prevalence in Australian adults. © 2022 Australian Dental Association.

Prevalence of oral and anal human papillomavirus infection in Czech predominantly HIV-positive men having sex with men - data from a previously unreported population.

HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) are more likely to experience human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The persistent HPV infection is the major factor in the development of anal and oropharyngeal neoplasms. Data on the prevalence of anal and oral HPV in MSM are almost absent from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. We conducted a cross-sectional study focused on the prevalence of oral and anal HPV infections and the relationship between current anal and oral HPV intrapersonal infection in a Czech population of predominantly HIV-positive MSM. Oral gargle and anal swab samples from 205 predominantly HIV-positive MSM from the Czech Republic were analysed for HPV infection using PCR. Selected sociodemographic and clinical data were correlated with HPV detection using generalized linear models and multivariate analysis. HPV infection was detected in 183 (96.8%) anal and 48 (23.6%) oral samples. The most common type of HR-HPV was HPV16 in both anal (25.4%) and oral (2.5%) samples. Multiple anal HPV infections and the presence of vaccine-targeted HR-HPV types were significantly correlated with abnormal anal cytology and HIV status. The prevalence of anal HPV infection in Czech predominantly HIV-positive MSM ranks among the highest reported, while oral HPV prevalence is consistent with MSM populations. Minimal overlap of oral and anal HPV types within a patient was observed.

Sexual practices and HPV infection in unvaccinated young adults

The present study aimed to evaluate the association of genital and oral HPV infection among different sexual practices in both sexes. In total, 6388 unvaccinated men and women aged 16–25 years from all state capitals of Brazil were enrolled in through primary care services between September 2016 and November 2017. Genital and oral HPV genotyping was performed using the Roche Linear Array. Poisson regression analysis with robust variance was conducted to examine factors associated with overall HPV infection. A higher prevalence of genital HPV was found in women who practiced oral sex (57.85%) and in men who practiced all types of sex (65.87%). However, having more sexual partners and being younger were more important than the type of sex practiced. HPV 6 (7.1%) and 16 (10.5%) were significantly more prevalent in women who practiced oral sex, while HPV 6 (23.96%) and 11 (21.49%) were more prevalent in men who practiced anal sex. The type of sex was not associated with oral HPV prevalence. Genital and oral HPV infection were not associated by different sexual practices in the studied population.

Molecular characterization and risk factors of oral high-risk human papillomavirus among females in Punjab, Pakistan.

The development of oral and oropharyngeal cancers is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, debate exists about the prevalence of high-risk oral HPV (HR-HPV) and its associated risk factors. This study evaluated the distribution of genotypes and associated risk factors of oral HR-HPV infection in the normal oral mucosa of the Pakistani female population with general gynecological problems. A total of 200 females from a regional gynecological hospital in Pakistan were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was carried out, followed by the study participants' oral and dental examinations. Whole saliva was collected by a drooling method. The viral DNA extraction and oral HR-HPV genotyping were detected via real-time polymerase chain reaction. Among the 200 females (mean age, 37.76 years), 22 females (11%) were positive for oral HR-HPV DNA. Single oral HR-HPV infection was seen in 8%, whereas co-infection was observed in 3% with HPV16 and HPV18 most common genotypes. Comparison of the risk factors like oral sex history odds ratio (OR 8.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.85-28.16; p < 0.005), and open-mouth kissing (OR, 5.17; 95% CI 1.48-27.41; p = 0.005) with oral HR-HPV infection was found to be significantly associated. In Pakistan, oral HR-HPV-positive infection is not uncommon; HPV16 and HPV18 are the most frequent genotypes. Furthermore, this study also provides data that oral HR-HPV positive infection was significantly associated with sexual behaviors. Therefore, preventive health efforts, like health education and vaccination, should be practiced.

Prevalence and determinants of oral and cervicogenital HPV infection: Baseline analysis of the Michigan HPV and Oropharyngeal Cancer (MHOC) cohort study.

We determined baseline oral and cervicogenital human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence and determinants of infection in the Michigan HPV and Oropharyngeal Cancer (MHOC) study. We enrolled 394 college-age and older participants of both sexes in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the surrounding area. All participants provided an oral sample at baseline, and 130 females provided a cervicogenital sample. Samples were tested for 18 HPV genotypes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) MassArray. Participants filled out sociodemographic and behavioral questionnaires. Prevalence ratios for HPV oral or cervicogenital prevalence by predictor variables were estimated in univariable log-binomial models. Analysis was conducted 2018–20. In the full cohort, baseline oral HPV prevalence was 10.0% for any detected genotype (among the 338 valid oral tests at baseline) and 6.5% for high-risk types, and cervicogenital prevalence was 20.0% and 10.8%, respectively (among the 130 first valid cervicogenital tests). Oral HPV prevalence did not vary by sex, with 10.5% of women and 9.0% of men having an infection. We found a high prevalence of oral and cervicogenital HPV infection in college-age participants reporting no lifetime sexual partners. Reporting a single recent partner was associated with a lower oral HPV prevalence (PR 0.39, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.96) than reporting no recent (but at least one ever) partner. No similar protective effect was seen for cervicogenital HPV. Both oral and cervicogenital prevalence increased with the number of recent partners for most sexual behaviors. We observed an ecological fallacy masking the direction of impact of vaccination on HPV prevalence in the full cohort compared to the college-aged and the age 23+ populations considered separately. Substance use was not significantly associated with oral or cervicogenital HPV infection. Many studies report substantially higher oral HPV infection prevalence in men than in women. That difference may not be uniform across populations in the US.

Oral human papillomavirus prevalence, persistence, and risk-factors in HIV-positive and HIV-negative adults

BackgroundHIV has been shown to increase the likelihood of oral HPV infection. In this study, we evaluated the risk of oral HPV in HIV infected patients compared with HIV-negative controls. Methods101 healthy adult volunteers (HIV-) and 245 adults living with HIV infection (HIV+) were recruited from 5 academic medical centers. Questionnaires and saliva samples were obtained every 3–8 months over a period of 2 years (2015–2017). DNA was isolated from the saliva samples and tested for 18 high- and low-risk genotypes. ResultsOral HPV was detected in 23% of HIV + vs. 10% of HIV- participants (p < 0.0001). Men had a higher oral HPV prevalence than women (27% vs. 15% HIV+, p = 0.03, 16% vs. 5% HIV-, p = 0.01). Risk factors among HIV + participants included more lifetime deep kissing and oral sex partners, and history of AIDS. Persistent oral HPV was detected in 23% of HIV + vs. 5% of HIV- participants (p < 0.001). Among 8 HIV + participants with CD4 counts <200 cell/μL none had cleared their HPV infection during the study. ConclusionsRisk of oral HPV infection and persistence was significantly higher in HIV + adults with a history of poorly controlled HIV, which may put them at increased risk of HPV-associated cancer.

Assessment of Oral Human Papillomavirus Prevalence in Pediatric and Adult Patients within a Multi-Ethnic Clinic Population.

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) encompasses a large family of oncogenic viruses responsible for increasing rates of both cervical and oral cancer, particularly among minority and low-income populations. Although this represents an increasingly significant public health risk, few studies have screened for oral HPV within Nevada. Based upon this information, the primary objective of this study was to provide a temporal analysis of oral HPV screening among a primarily low-income, minority patient population. Methods: This retrospective analysis was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In brief, unstimulated saliva samples were previously obtained from clinical patient volunteers who provided informed consent and pediatric assent (if applicable). DNA was isolated and screened using spectrophotometry for quality (A260:A280 ratio > 1.70) and quantity (concentration > 100 ng). Validated qPCR primers were used to screen repository samples for high-risk HPV strains HPV16 and HPV18. Results: A total of N = 930 samples were identified for this study, which involved n = 555 samples from adults and n = 375 from pediatric patients treated between 2011 and 2019. A demographic analysis revealed nearly equal distribution between males and females with most derived from non-White (minority) patients. A qPCR screening revealed an overall increase in high-risk HPV of 3.17-fold from 5.7% in 2011 to 18.1% in 2019 and a coefficient of determination or R2 = 0.764, suggesting a strong, positive correlation between more recent sample years and HPV-positive results, which was observed among both pediatric (R2 = 0.671) and adult (R2 = 0.971) patients. In addition, although the average age among adult patients increased over time, a significant decrease was observed among pediatric patients from an average of 16.0 years to 14.81 years. Conclusions: These data suggest temporal changes and positive increases in the prevalence of oral HPV among both the pediatric and adult patient samples taken from this clinic population. These data are important as considerations are made regarding which HPV vaccination education and awareness programs are introduced and the specific populations most likely to benefit from these interventions.

Oral, genital and anal human papillomavirus infections among female sex workers in Ibadan, Nigeria

BackgroundThere are limited data on the epidemiology of HPV in different anatomical sites of female sex workers (FSW). We investigated the prevalence and concordance of cervical, vulval, oral and anal HPV among FSW in Ibadan, Nigeria.MethodsFSWs aged 18–45 years were enrolled in a cross-sectional survey. After interview and clinical examination, samples were collected from mouth, cervix, vulva and anus. HPV genotyping was done with Anyplex II 28HPV assay. Multivariable analyses were performed to explore associated risk factors and concordance of HPV infections across sites.ResultsIn total, 315 FSWs participated in the study with a mean age of 30–6.5 years. The prevalence of any HPV infection was 88% in the vulva, 84% in the cervix, 75% in the anus and 24% in the oral cavity. HPV 35 was the most prevalent and concordant high-risk type in the four sites. The risk factors for HPV infection by anatomic site varied.ConclusionThis large study showed a high prevalence and concordance of HPV infections of cervical, vulval, oral and anal HPV among FSWs in Nigeria. The potential to acquire and transmit HPV is high in this population, and we highlighted the urgency to protect young women through HPV vaccination.

Oral and Oropharyngeal HPV prevalence in South Africa A systematic review and meta-analysis

Prevalence data for HPV infection in the head and neck in Southern African populations is lacking. In addition to cervical cancer, this sexually transmitted oncogenic virus is responsible for a subset of head and neck cancer and is transmitted via oral sexual routes, and through other forms of intimate contact between anatomical sites lined by mucosa. This systematic review and meta-analyses aimed to synthesize data for the prevalence of head and neck HPV infection in South Africa. Original research papers from South Africa reporting on the prevalence of HPV in the head and neck was systematically reviewed using PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library. A meta-analysis on the prevalence data wasconducted for 16 papers that met the inclusion criteria.

Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) and associated factors among healthy populations: The design of the PROGRESS (PRevalence of Oral hpv infection, a Global aSSessment) study

BackgroundHead and neck cancers are increasingly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Previous studies of oral HPV indicate considerable heterogeneity across geographic regions and by sex, but studies differ in methodologies used and risk groups included. Understanding the natural history of oral HPV in the general population is important to assess HPV-related disease burden and plan effective prevention programs. In this study, we aim to assess the prevalence, incidence, and persistence of oral HPV among adult men and women. Factors independently associated with oral HPV will also be evaluated. MethodsThe PROGRESS (PRevalence of Oral hpv infection, a Global aSSessment) study is a non-interventional study of 7877 healthy men and women aged 18–60 years, from France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Oral HPV prevalence will be measured using a commercially available PCR DNA test. In the US, participants will be followed prospectively every 6 months for 24 months to assess incidence, clearance, and persistence of oral HPV infection. Eligible individuals presenting for regular dental check-ups will be recruited from participating dental offices via systematic consecutive sampling. Participant dentists will collect clinical characteristics, and participants will complete self-reported study questionnaires and provide an oral rinse and gargle (ORG) specimen for HPV-DNA detection and genotyping at each study visit. HPV-DNA detection and genotyping will be performed in two reference laboratories, using the SPF10/DEIA/LiPA25 system. DiscussionPROGRESS study aims to fill knowledge gaps concerning the natural history of oral HPV using a standardized methodology. PROGRESS will also assess factors associated with oral HPV prevalence and natural history in the general population.

Prevalence of Oral Human Papillomavirus Infection by Number of Vaccine Doses Among US Adults.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is effective at reducing the incidence of cervical cancer caused by HPV. Studies have shown that 1 dose of the HPV vaccine offers comparable protection against genital HPV infection as additional doses; however, it is unknown whether oral HPV prevalence also differs by number of vaccine doses. We examined differences in prevalence of oral HPV by number of doses using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2009 to 2016. The prevalence of HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 infections was statistically significantly lower in individuals who received 1 dose (0.3%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.0% to 0.9%) or 2-3 doses (0.4%, 95% CI = 0.0% to 1.2%) compared with unvaccinated individuals (1.2%, 95% CI = 0.9% to 1.6%). Smokers, individuals who initiated oral sex at age 17 years or younger, and those with more than 2 oral sexual partners had higher rates of oral HPV infection. Ongoing prospective studies are essential to further evaluate the efficacy of a single-dose regimen for prevention of oral HPV.
